Justin Slaughter, D-Chicago, is encouraging local holiday shoppers, parents and guardians to consult Attorney General Kwame Raoul’s annual Safe Shopping Guide. “For most people, the holiday season is a time to reconnect with family and loved ones, but for others it also presents the perfect time to scam individuals,” said Slaughter. “In addition to not buying recalled products, consumers must also be wary of other hazards like lead paint.” Attorney General Kwame Raoul’s office recently released their 2021 Safe Shopping Guide, which is the latest in a series of annual lists of recalled and hazardous consumer products that include children’s toys, clothes and games. Yesterday, Thursday, December 9, 2021, 100 Chicagoans including leaders from the Islam, Bahá’í, Jewish and Christian faiths and members from over 15 faith institutions came together via Zoom to listen, learn, and share about the housing and homelessness crisis in Chicago. A yearly estimate from Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, states over 58,000 are experiencing homelessness on the streets, in shelters or living-doubled-up. Bring Chicago Home, a campaign endorsed by over 85 organizations in Chicago, proposes to create a new, dedicated revenue stream to fund permanent, supportive housing (PSH) for people experiencing homelessness. PSH, a model that combines affordable housing with wraparound services like mental health supports and job training, plays a critical role in stabilizing and healing people after their traumatic experience with homelessness. The new revenue would come from increasing the real estate transfer tax, a one-time tax on properties sold for over $1 million, impacting less than 5% of property transactions in Chicago. This additional funding could house an estimated 12,000 families in the next 10 years. After supporting the Bring Chicago Home campaign during her election bid, Mayor Lori Lightfoot has since refused to support a proposal that would both change the real estate transfer tax on high end property transactions and dedicate a portion of the additional resources to homelessness. “It is incredibly frustrating, but this is a season of hope. I am hopeful. I am hopeful that our Mayor and city council Aldermen can act on this proposal. It’s simply the right thing to do,” ended Reverend Jackie.

Chanay Walton created My Pay Circle in 2019. It is an app that allows its users to organize trips and payments for group travel. When the pandemic hit and people stopped traveling, she decided to pivot and retool the app, with a focus on how travel would change post pandemic. Now, she is ready to re-launch the app in 2022. Walton came up with the idea one night when she had the word “pay” stuck in her head. She likes to travel with groups of her friends. The next day, she called app developers to create the app. Walton let people test out the app and those people had the same experience with organizing trips and payments. Developing the app was a fun experience for her. She was able to meet new people in tech and was awarded the Women Tech Founders’ Women in Tech Lifestyle award in 2019. Having the world shutdown due to COVID-19, allowed Walton to go back to the drawing board and come up with new ideas and new features for the app. “It just gives us the opportunity to kind of make it better and more robust, to kind of fit when
things get back into action,” Walton said. Walton also is the founder of A Better Weigh, a medical weight loss center that uses FDA approved medications for weight management. Walton struggled with her own weight management issues after having her son in 2014. She likes to say, “I’m not only the president, I’m also a client.” She also has experience as a registered nurse. A Better Weigh offers three medically assisted weight loss programs. A Better Weigh has two Chicago locations, one location in Tinley Park and the other one in Schererville, Ind. Walton always had a love of music and enjoyed it. She has a nephew who wanted to get into the music industry as a rapper. She invested in him and started Boss Ego Entertainment. Boss Ego Entertainment has given her the opportunity to live out her dream of being involved in the music industry. She has been able to be in the studio, working with different artists. Walton is part of the tech industry, medical industry, and music industry. It is fun for her to have experiences in those industries. Her advice to other entrepreneurs looking to get started; is to do their research.
“One thing about entrepreneurship, the difference to me as far as what makes you a successful business owner, is having the confidence to follow through on your dreams. A lot of times, they will have great ideas and great business opportunities they can get into, but they don’t have enough confidence in themselves to make the investment in themselves,” she said. Walton said those people also might be afraid to take the first step because of fear of failure. To that she said, failure is just a motivator for her. When she started her entrepreneurship journey in 2016, it was a childcare center. It failed but that didn’t stop her from trying her hand in business again. It motivated her to learn from her mistakes, pick herself up, dust herself off and try it again. “I think that failure is what led to the success of my future businesses, for my current businesses, because now I know what not to do,” she said. “That could’ve been a point in my life where it’s like, ‘OK, being an entrepreneur is not for me,’ but it was the opposite. New App Dedicated to Saving the Lives of Black Women with Breast Cancer (Black PR Wire) Breast cancer doesn’t have a color but the journey, narrative, and experience of a Black woman surviving cancer are radically different from a white woman. Studies suggest Black women do not have the highest diagnosis of breast cancer incidence, yet they have a higher death rate than other races of women. When Rev. Tammie Denyse received her diagnosis, she learned that Black women had a 41% higher mortality rate than white women with an identical diagnosis. Shaken by this revelation, she was propelled by her personal wish to LIVE despite the diagnosis and be there to save a community of Black women facing the same circumstances. Now a 17-year breast cancer survivor, she has dedicated herself to advocating for cancer patients and their families through the trauma of a cancer diagnosis. She co-founded Carrie’s Touch with her late sister Lynne Rankin-Cochran targeting the local faith-based community. When Rev. Tammie realized the gut-wrenching statistic that 41% of Black women die more often than white women, she sought to understand the reasons why. Diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer that had already begun to spread, her oncologist told her that she may not live to see the coveted 5-year anniversary. She was offered to participate in a clinical trial but was shocked when her oncologist shared she was unaware of how Black women were responding to the trial. It was at that moment that Rev. Tammie was determined to live not only for herself and her children but also to help other Black women live. In their 15th year of operations, Carrie’s TOUCH launched the Survive and Thrive app. It is the first-of-its-kind app made by BIPOC women for BIPOC women in the fight for their LIFE after a breast cancer diagnosis. The Survive and Thrive app aims to close the breast cancer mortality disparity for Black women. They are steadfast in their commitment to reverse the staggering statistic that remains today. Rev. focusing on the faith-based community was organic for us,” she continues. “We needed to get the word out to Black women in the community and educate them about breast cancer and the importance of early detection.” Though breast cancer does not have a color, the journey, narrative, and experience of a Black woman surviving cancer are oftentimes radically different from a white woman. Black women are burdened by many factors including lack of adequate support, lack of doctor-patient trust, lack of financial and material resources, lack of awareness and data and lack of education about breast cancer and its many treatments and side effects. Survive and Thrive’s purpose is simple and is inspired by the breast cancer diagnosis of Rev. Tammie’s personal journey, the women she serves, commitment to support more Black, Indigenous, Women of Color, and to humanize their experience with breast cancer. Rev. Tammie says Survive and Thrive is the future of breast cancer advocacy because it is still unacceptable that Black women are dying at 41% higher rates than white women. “We are implementing tangible support and resources for Black, Indigenous, Women of Color and creating a clearer pathway of communication and understanding between patient and doctor through a more comprehensive picture of the whole woman, not just her diagnosis,” she adds. POLITICAL Affairs Belt law removes standardized test requirement for university acceptance starting Jan. 1 Starting Jan. 1, students who wish to attend an Illinois public college or university will no longer be required to submit ACT and SAT scores when applying, thanks to a law championed by State Senator Christopher Belt (D-Swansea). “Standardized test scores do not showcase a student’s ability,” Belt said. “Students struggle each year to do well on ACT and SAT tests. Removing this requirement will help test-anxious students get into college.” The new law, led by Belt and Representative LaToya Greenwood (DEast St. Louis), creates the Higher Education Fair Admissions Act, which prohibits Illinois’ public universities from relying solely on a student’s ACT or SAT score to make an admissions decision. Currently, a quarter of the country’s public universities do not require standardized tests scores for admittance. Notably, the University of Chicago recently saw record enrollment of firstgeneration, low-income and rural students after lifting its standardized test requirement. Admission counselors have been looking more closely at the benefits from adopting test-optional strategies. Other submissions from students, including essays, activities and academic records, bring larger and more diverse applicants to colleges and universities. “The ACT and SAT create a barrier for underprivileged and disadvantaged students,” Belt said. “When qualified applicants are denied admittance because of a test score, high-caliber students are left out. It’s essential that we continue to protect students and give them every available opportunity to support their future.” Starting Jan. 1, incoming college students will not be required to submit standardized test scores under Public Act 102-0054.

Starting Jan. 1, schools will be prohibited from discriminating against natural hairstyles traditionally associated with race and ethnicityincluding locs, braids, twists and afros - thanks to a law championed by State Senator Mike Simmons (D-Chicago). “No child should ever be singled out for sporting a hairstyle that authentically expresses their heritage and culture,” Simmons said. “These policies only serve to humiliate students of color who choose to dress themselves and wear their hair in a style that honors and respects their heritage and ancestry.” The Jett Hawkins Act prevents school boards, local school councils, charter schools and non-private schools from creating hairstyle-based dress code requirements. Simmons, who wears his hair in freeform locs, championed the law in support of Jett Hawkins, a 4-year old boy who was sent home from school earlier this year for having braids that violated his school’s dress code. “Kids like Jett deserve to express themselves however they see fit and they shouldn’t have to be restricted by old fashioned and often racist dress codes,” Simmons said. “We need to empower Black children to have the confidence to express themselves naturally, and give them and their families more agency over their personal choices. We still have more work to do, but I’m pleased that beginning in 2022, Black youth in Illinois will be able to wear their hair naturally in all schools.” Public Act 102-0360 , which was signed into law by Gov. JB Pritzker on Aug. 13, will take effect Jan. 1 , 2022.

The funders recently tapped veteran labor strategist and organizer Jennifer Epps as LIFT’s next leader in its fight to build a stronger worker and labor movement and support innovative and bold strategies being developed by organizers across America. Epps has worked on the frontlines leading strategies that have led to unionization, improvements in benefits, better working conditions, and raised millions of dollars for workers in the health care and education sectors. As a former vice president of the largest local union in the world, 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, and as the former executive director of one of the largest teachers’ union locals in the nation, Epps brings more than 15 years of experience organizing and winning for workers to her new role as Executive Director of the LIFT Fund. As a seasoned organizer and strategic leader with extensive experience building worker power, Epps has helped forge relationships and alliances between labor and community organizations to win major victories. Review finances holistically. Ensure you evaluate the big picture – not just where you are spending, but where you are saving and protecting your future too. A simple budget will help you differentiate between needs and wants, enabling you to find areas to cut back or eliminate to find money to meet your financial goals, like retirement or emergency savings. Maximize online budgeting tools,
calculators and other financial wellness resources available through your employer too. 2. Prepare for the unexpected. Without the right protections in place, an unexpected event can derail retirement savings, disrupt your ability to provide for your family or drive you into additional debt.
