NICOR GAS PROVIDED MORE THAN $1.2 MILLION IN UNITED WAY GRANTS IN 2022

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Nicor Gas, a top 25 corporate partner of United Way of Metro Chicago, and its employees have contributed more than $1.2 million to United Way chapters across its service territory. This funding is allocated to local affiliates, nonprofit partners and organizations in underserved communities to support food and energy insecurity, healthcare, education and housing initiatives for customers throughout the Nicor Gas footprint.

The 2022 United Way contributions include employee donations of more than $225,000 and more than $1 million directly from Nicor Gas and the Nicor Gas Foundation. SHEDD AQUARIUM WINTER 2023 FREE DAYS AND ANNUAL CLOSURE DAYS

Shedd Aquarium, 1200 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive, is offering several days this winter for Illinois residents to enjoy free admission. Illinois resident guests can escape the cold outside and look nature in the eye for free on these select dates.

With a valid ID, Illinois residents receive free general admission with advance ticket reservation. Free general admission also includes the option to view an animal spotlight in Abbott Oceanarium, featuring animals like Pacific white-sided dolphins, beluga whales, penguins and California sea lions.

In addition, Shedd will be closed to the public on Tuesday, Jan. 17, and Wednesday, Jan. 18, for routine maintenance, cleaning and projects that cannot take place outside of normal hours of operation or with guests in the building. Ahead of the closure days, from Jan. 12-16, Illinois residents can enjoy free admission with all-inclusive access to the aquarium.

Black Entertainment Summit aims to get more Black creatives in the industry

Years ago, she moved to Los Angeles from New York City. She didn’t know one person and was trying to get her foot in the door in the entertainment industry.

Thomas has experienced firsthand how hard it is to build relationships and build a network. Thomas is the Founder and CEO of Diverse Representation. Its mission is to increase exposure and hiring of African-American publicists, agents, managers and attorneys in the entertainment and sports industry.

Diverse Representation will host the Black Entertainment Career Summit from Thursday, Jan. 12th thru. Saturday, Jan. 14th, at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. The event will take place in person and virtually.

Thomas came up with the idea for the Black Entertainment Summit because in the past, she heard of studios, networks and other companies within the entertainment space express difficulty in finding Black candidates for roles. She decided she would come up with an event that made it easier for those entities in the entertainment industry to identify, locate and hire Black candidates for various positions in the industry. Thomas also heard from Black professionals and creatives in the industry that it was difficult to break into the industry. Thomas wants to make it easier for Black people in the industry to get their foot in the door and demystify some of the barriers so that more Black people gets in the door.

During the three-day summit, attendees can participate in panel discussions, networking opportunities, and fireside chats. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the United Talent Agency, Creative Artists Agency, Endeavor, DreamWorks Animation, NBCUniversal, Warner Bros. Discovery, as well as LinkedIn, have signed on to speak at the event. On Jan. 14th, the event will be virtual. Thomas did this because she wanted Black professionals who were not in Los Angeles to have the opportunity to participate.

Thomas was able to get the companies to participate because Diverse Representation already had existing relationships with

them. The ones they didn’t have an existing relationship with, they reached out and explained the goal of the summit and they agreed to participate.

“At the end of the day, we are still not in a lot of positions and roles where we have the hiring power. We’re still not in a lot of the C-Suites, we’re still not in a lot of the Executive roles. A lot of us still don’t have the power to hire, at the end of the day,” Thomas said, adding that sometimes when recruiters are looking to hire, they will ask friends and colleagues for referrals and recommendations, and oftentimes those people look like the recruiters.

Thomas acknowledged that it can be an internal cycle when there are not recruiters who have diverse backgrounds and don’t have a network that is diverse. In Los Angeles, which Thomas considers the entertainment hub of the country, Black people aren’t a large part of the population. Also, there is not a large number of Black people whose families are part of the entertainment industry, which is built partially off nepotism.

Thomas acknowledged that in recent years, Black talent has been vocal about more Black makeup artists and hairstylists in the entertainment industry. There are more directories that have been created for Black makeup artists and hairstylists in the last two years that productions can tap into.

Thomas hopes people find employment opportunities and build a network from attending the Black Entertainment Career Summit. “I hope they’re able to learn something. There are a lot of top notch speakers who are going to be speaking at this event, and I hope attendees are able to walk away with a better understanding of the entertainment industry, the current landscape and different opportunities in 2023. I just hope they’re able to learn a lot more about the industry and what’s coming down the pipeline,” she said.

REP. MAYFIELD CELEBRATES PROTECT ILLINOIS COMMUNITIES ACT

State Rep. Rita Mayfield, D-Waukegan, passed legislation banning assault-style weapons, high-capacity magazines, and rapid-fire firearm modifications statewide Thursday, shortly after joining activists and advocates from across the state who had gathered to encourage lawmakers to pass the bill.

“There is absolutely no reason why anyone, other than some police officers or members of the Armed Forces, should have access to these weapons of war,” Mayfield said, after the bill had passed. “Our communities called on us to act to protect them from the terror of gun violence and mass shootings that continue to threaten them, and we, therefore, had a moral duty to take this step, so that children and their families in our great state are now no longer forced to live with the fear that today or tomorrow or next week they may go off to school or work or to the supermarket—and never return.”

Mayfield passed the Protect Illinois Communities Act, which addresses longstanding goals of the gun safety movement, but gained added momentum after the events of July 4, 2022, when a disturbed individual opened fire on Independence Day paradegoers in Highland Park, IL, firing 83 rounds from a military-style assault rifle, killing seven people and wounding 48.

Her vote will ban new sales of assault rifles in Illinois, ban the sale of ammunition clips containing more than 12 bullets, and ban modifications that make semi-automatic weapons operate like fully automatic machine guns. Additionally, the bill establishes an Illinois State Police anti-trafficking unit to combat the flood of illegal guns from out of state.

“These weapons are meant for battlefields, not for neighborhoods,” Mayfield said. “And yet, in neighborhoods across our state, we have continued to see the awful human toll caused by weapons like the ones covered by this bill. That’s why we did what we did tonight—to stop the carnage and to protect life and peace and justice. We did it to make everyone in Illinois safer.”

Older Illinoisans will see a reduced registration fee under a new law supported by Senator Bill Cunningham that going into effect of Jan. 1, 2022.

“Inflation is still hurting families, especially those on a fixed income,” said Cunningham, a Democrat who represents portions of Chicago and the southwest suburbs. “I am proud to announce this law starts off the year with a tax cut.”

Cunningham voted for House Bill 5304, which will reduce the vehicle registration fee for vehicle owners and their spouses from $24 to $10 if they qualify or have been approved for benefits under the Senior Citizens and Persons with Disability Property Tax Relief Act.

Under the act, an individual qualifies if they are 65 years of age or older or if a single person’s income is less than $33,562 a year and less than $44,533 for a couple.

“The Supreme Court made the correct decision to prevent this particularly harmful provision of the misleadingly named ‘SAFE-T Act’ from taking effect. Without their action, murderers, arsonists, kidnappers, and other violent criminals would have been allowed back onto the streets while awaiting trial, putting local communities in danger.

“Illinois lawmakers should use the court’s temporary stay as an opportunity to revisit this misguided law and eliminate this dangerous provision once and for all. This is a misguided approach to criminal justice reform, because there is no justice in a soft on crime posture that releases individuals who have committed crimes for them to go out and commit them again. The victims of this policy are disproportionately likely to be Black and Brown citizens living in the City of Chicago and the surrounding communities.

“I have seen firsthand the devastation that violent crime can cause to families and communities, and I implore Illinois lawmakers to take immediate action to avert this preventable tragedy. We cannot allow this radical experiment in ‘Woke’ justice to become a precedent for other states.”

Parents Urged to Check Their Window Coverings

NEW YORK, NY -- The Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) is reminding parents and caregivers of the potential dangers posed by window cords, and is urging them to only use cordless window covering products or those that have inaccessible cords in homes with young children. Owners and renters alike should replace all corded window coverings in their homes with today’s safer products.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), corded window coverings are one of the top five hidden hazards in American homes, with infants and children accidentally becoming entangled in window cords. Some of these incidents involve older products that are still in use and do not have the safety devices or designs instituted in the past decade.

“Parents with young children should replace their corded window coverings with products that are cordless or have inaccessible cords,” says Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) Executive Director, Peter Rush. “The new Best for Kids™ certification label recently launched makes it easy for parents and caregivers to easily identify which products are best suited for homes with young children.”

The Best for Kids™ certification program, launched by the window covering industry, will assist in educating consumers about potential window-cord hazards

HHS Issues New Strengthened Conscience and Religious Nondiscrimination Proposed Rule

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office for Civil Rights (OCR) announced a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM), entitled Safeguarding the Rights of Conscience as Protected by Federal Statutes, which proposes to restore the longstanding process for the handling of conscience complaints and provide additional safeguards to protect against conscience and religious discrimination.

“No one should be discriminated against because of their religious or moral beliefs, especially when they are seeking or providing care,” said Secretary Xavier Becerra. “The proposed rule strengthens protections for people with religious or moral objections while also ensuring access to care for all in keeping with the law.”

“Protecting conscience rights and enforcing the law to combat religious discrimination is critical,” said Office for Civil Rights Director Melanie Fontes Rainer. “Today’s proposed rule would strengthen these protections and reinforce our long-standing process for handling such conscience and faith-based objections. It also would take steps to help ensure that individuals are aware of their rights.”

In 2019, OCR issued a regulation that provided broad definitions, created new compliance regulations, and created a new enforcement mechanism for a number of statutes related to the conscience rights of certain federally funded health care entities and providers. The 2019 Final Rule was held unlawful by three federal district courts. In light of these court decisions, and consistent with the Administration’s commitment to safeguard the rights of federal conscience and religious nondiscrimination while protecting access to care, this NPRM proposes to partially rescind the Department’s 2019 rule while reinforcing other processes previously in place for the handling of conscience and religious freedom complaints.

Public comments on the NPRM are due 60 days after publication of the NPRM in the Federal Register.

SAMHSA Announces National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) Results

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) released the results of its annual National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), which shows how people living in America reported about their experience with mental health conditions, substance use, and pursuit of treatment in 2021. The 2021 NSDUH national report includes selected estimates by race, ethnicity, and age group. It is the most comprehensive report on substance use and mental health indicators that SAMHSA has released to date.

Estimates from the 2021 NSDUH should not be compared with estimates from previous years because the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated methodological changes to the data collection process.

Key findings from the 2021 NSDUH include: Drug Use and Substance Use Disorder

Among people aged 12 or older in 2021, 61.2 million people (or 21.9 percent of the population) used illicit drugs in the past year. The most commonly used illicit drug was marijuana, which 52.5 million people used. Nearly 2 in 5 young adults 18 to 25 used illicit drugs in the past year; 1 in 3 young adults 18 to 25 used marijuana in the past year.

9.2 million people 12 and older misused opioids in the past year.

46.3 million people aged 12 or older (or 16.5 percent of the population) met the applicable DSM-5 criteria for having a substance use disorder in the past year, including 29.5 million people who were classified as having an alcohol use disorder and 24 million people who were classified as having a drug use disorder.

The percentage of people who were classified as having a past year substance use disorder, including alcohol use and/or drug use disorder, was highest among young adults aged 18 to 25 compared to youth and adults 26 and older.

In 2021, 94% of people aged 12 or older with a substance use disorder did not receive any treatment. Nearly all people with a substance use disorder who did not get treatment at a specialty

facility did not think they needed treatment.

Major Depressive Episodes (MDE) Among Adolescents

In 2021, 1 in 5 adolescents had a major depressive episode in the past year. Of these, nearly 75 percent had symptoms consistent with severe impairment, which caused severe problems with their ability to do chores at home, do well at work or school, get along with their family, or have a social life.

The prevalence of past year MDE among Black and Asian adolescents was lower compared to adolescents from most other racial/ethnic groups.

More than half of youth with an MDE did not receive treatment in the past year.

Mental Illness among Adults

Nearly 1 in 4 adults 18 and older, and 1 in 3 among adults aged 18 to 25, had a mental illness in the past year.

Adults with serious mental illness had higher rates of treatment compared to those with any mental illness. Despite having the highest rate of serious mental illness, people aged 18 to 25 had the lowest rate of treatment in comparison to adults in other age groups.

White and Multiracial adults were more likely to receive mental health services in the past year than Black, Hispanic or Latino, or Asian adults.

Co-Occurring Substance Use Disorder with Any Mental Illness

13.5 percent of young adults aged 18 to 25 had both a substance use disorder and any mental illness in the past year.

Nearly 1 in 3 adults had either a substance use disorder or any mental illness in the past year, and 46 percent of young adults 18-25 had either a substance use disorder or any mental illness.

The percentage of adults aged 18 or older who met criteria for both a mental illness and a substance use disorder in the past year was higher among Multiracial adults than among White, Black, Hispanic or Latino, or Asian adults. Asian adults were

less likely to have had both AMI and a substance use disorder in the past year compared with adults in most other racial or ethnic groups.

Serious Thoughts of Suicide, Suicide Plans, and Suicide Attempts 12.3 million adults aged 18 or older had serious thoughts of suicide in the past year, 3.5 million made suicide plans, and 1.7 million attempted suicide.

Hispanic or Latino adults were more likely than White or Asian adults to have attempted suicide in the past year, and Black adults were more likely than Asian adults to have attempted suicide in the past year.

Recovery

7 in 10 (72.2 percent or 20.9 million) adults who ever had a substance use problem considered themselves to be recovering or in recovery.

2 in 3 (66.5 percent or 38.8 million) adults who ever had a mental health issue considered themselves to be recovering or in recovery.

If you only show up to a group exercise class because it fits in your schedule, but you really hate the music and the instructor isn’t that exciting, you will gradually stop giving your best effort.

You’re simply going through the motions of being physically present and it does not take long for this to be a complete waste of time with no results.

They say variety is the spice of life and this totally applies to exercise too.

Just as you wouldn’t eat the same meal every day, your workout should also be full of options. Introducing several activities to your weekly routine helps bust plateaus and keeps monotony at bay.

Additionally, variety helps prevent overuse injuries due to repetitive movements.

Find Your friends to help you achieve fitness and wellness goals

Once you have planned out your schedule, recruit a different friend for each activity.

A running partner with a similar pace, a fellow yogi, and a friend that enjoys lifting weights as much as you do keeps the conversation fresh and camaraderie high.

In addition to workouts with friends, remember to

take time for yourself. Devoting a day or two for a solo workout also has its perks. This is the perfect time to collect your thoughts, enjoy new music or catch up on an audiobook.

4Keep a journal to track your fitness and wellness activities  Journaling has benefits beyond tracking your exercise progress.

It is an excellent way to have an honest conversation with oneself. Understanding how we function emotionally plays a bigger role than one may think when it comes to our decision-making process.

If a person is stressed and frustrated, they might channel that anger into the best workout they’ve ever had or skip the workout and eat a pint of ice cream.

Acknowledging our triggers helps us navigate through them and make better choices.

Every evening before you call it a night, instead of scrolling through social media, take 10-15 minutes to document your workouts, the foods you ate, and your feelings.

Include reflective thoughts and motivational quotes as well.

Designate a day to review a week of entries to gain more insight into what drives you. This visual accountability is very beneficial for identifying behavioral patterns that point to why you keep falling off the fitness wagon.

Meditation goes hand in hand with journaling. This is a time for you to be in your personal space, free of distractions. Guided imagery, breathwork, reciting mantras, or simply sitting in silence are all forms of meditation.

This practice can evoke mindfulness, focus, and clarity in your daily life and help you eliminate stress and negative self-talk. It also has a plethora of health benefits from calming anxiety to lowering blood pressure. This practice can help you set the tone for daily physical activity. As this can be a challenging process to “be still”, it is good, to begin with 5 minutes each morning and progress from there.
