NICOR GAS EXPANDS PROGRAM TO HELP FAMILIES PAY THEIR NATURAL GAS UTILITY BILL

Naperville, Ill. -- Nicor Gas is making an additional $1 million available to The Salvation Army’s Shield of Caring program to help assist customers in need who may be struggling in the wake of rising energy prices and inflation that have been further strained by global conflicts. In October 2021, Nicor Gas contributed $5 million to The Salvation Army to help those still being impacted by the global health and financial crises. In the span of five months, the charitable organization has distributed $1 million of those funds, supporting approximately 4,700 individuals and families in need. Nicor Gas residential customers can apply online for a Shield of Caring grant at www. shieldofcaring.com or by calling their local Salvation Army corps community center. The Shield of Caring Program builds onto Nicor Gas’ existing Sharing Program to offer bill payment assistance to eligible residential customers in need. The Sharing Program will continue to operate as it has since 1983, with one-time annual grants up to $400 for income-eligible residential customers. To maximize the benefits, customers are first encouraged to apply for assistance from LIHEAP and the Sharing Program prior to applying for a Shield of Caring grant. Nicor Gas also has a variety of programs to help customers pay their natural gas utility bills. If eligible, individuals can take advantage of more than one energy assistance program offered. To learn more about how to benefit from the energy assistance options available, visit www.nicorgas.com/energyassistance.

Entrepreneur provides affordable career development services Continued from page 1 BY TIA CAROL JONES

McNeil wanted to offer affordable career development services through CHBM, and the same services free of charge to single parents ages 18-40. She started CHBM in 2015 and Disruptive in 2019. The organizations provide career development and career development-related workshops. The aim is to provide holistic services which includes workshops on resume writing, LinkedIn profile building, interviewing, and coaching. In the past, McNeil’s organizations have done voter registration events and food drives, because those things are also important to job seekers and can make an impact on their lives. Every third Saturday of the month, McNeil hosts a free career workshop at the Greater Grand Crossing Library, located at 1000 E. 73rd St. During those events, fresh food and vegetables are passed out, there is an employer or resource present, and there are three to five development tips given to attendees. “Every time we have an engagement, and because of what I do for my full-time job, I know that Black and brown individuals are 20 steps behind, when it comes to professional development, when it comes to leadership development, those dots are not connected for us, unless you have the opportunity to work for corporate America,” McNeil said. There is an event coming up on April 16th that will feature Dr. Shaniqua Jones, an author, educator, motivational speaker and restorative justice practitioner. The next events

after Jones’ appearance will be focused on conflict resolution and positive communication. McNeil wants attendees to come away from the events well-versed in how to show up for work, how to present themselves, as well as the time management piece. She also wants them to learn how to advocate for themselves, how to speak up for yourself, how to find a mentor and how to network. “I discovered in my 20 years in the workforce, that had it not been for the people in the workforce, who kind of lifted me as they climbed, I would’ve never gotten to the place where I am. So, as much as I possibly can support others who look like me …,” McNeil said, adding that she has a soft spot for parents and people of color, because she is both. During COVID-19, McNeill had to pivot to focus more on her books, and hosting virtual events. In 2020, McNeil enrolled in the Bank of America Institute for Women Entrepreneurship at Cornell University. The women’s entrepreneurship certificate program is available at no cost and provides female entrepreneurs, specifically women of color, with the resources they need to take their businesses to the next level. During the program, McNeil learned about more than what regular entrepreneurship programs teach. The program walked her through pricing of services, sales components, checklist to ensure the right services are being offered by a business. Over the course of the six week program it helped McNeil connect a lot of dots. For more information about Disruptive, Inc., visit www.smnpceinc.org. CDOT ahead of schedule as the City launches Year Two of the “Chicago Works” Program CHICAGO – On Wednesday, March 30, Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot joined CDOT Commissioner Gia Biagi and City employees to officially commemorate the start of the 2022 construction season. This event also launched the 2nd year of the Chicago Works jobs and infrastructure plan, a needsbased data-driven funding plan that focuses on investing in communities through infrastructure. The plan seeks to spur recovery and improve the quality of daily life in every neighborhood across the city by prioritizing equity, safety, and efficient project delivery. “As more and more residents get back to work and travel around our city, it is vital that we continue our efforts to improve the infrastructure they rely on,” said Mayor Lightfoot. “That’s why I am excited to kick off construction season by launching the 2nd year of the Chicago Works Capital Plan, which will allow CDOT and other City Departments to make significant progress in their efforts to improve our city’s roadways, bridges, lighting, ADA accessibility, and other high priority infrastructure. By starting this effort early this year, we will be able to maximize the amount of work we will complete this construction season.” The first two years of the five-year Chicago Works Capital Plan were approved by the City Council in November 2020. The full plan will provide $3.7 billion to improve the quality of life for all Chicago residents by investing in sustainable transportation infrastructure, updated City facilities, and modern equipment in all 77 communities. The plan also corrects decades of underinvestment, particularly

on the South and West Sides of Chicago. “I am pleased to stand with Mayor Lightfoot today as we begin our busy 2022 construction season,” said Alderman Howard B. Brookins, Jr., Chairman of the Committee of Transportation and Public Way. “Through The Chicago Works Capital Plan, city agencies are working together to deliver new and visible projects in every Chicago community.” The first installment of Chicago Works invests $1.4 billion in the first two years of the five-year plan. With an eye toward long-term local economic development and job creation, Chicago Works dedicates funding for the repair and replacement of traditional infrastructure like roads, bridges, sidewalks, ADA-compliant accessible crosswalk ramps, streetlights, and traffic signals. It also includes more than $100 million for a dozen new streetscape projects in INVEST South/West neighborhoods – including funding for public art, tree planting, and pedestrian safety improvements. “Chicago Works is an unprecedented opportunity for us to invest in our infrastructure network,” said CDOT Commissioner Gia Biagi. “We’re ready to get to work on projects in neighborhoods all over the city and get a jump-start on the construction season this year.” As we move into construction season, Chicagoans will see work taking place all over the city, including street resurfacing which will start in earnest next month. To get a jump start on resurfacing work, seasonal workers were called back a month early in March to complete much-needed concrete work and ADA upgrades.

HUNTER MEASURE TO CREATE TASK FORCE TO RESOLVE DISCRIMINATION IN THE HOUSING INDUSTRY

Bronzeville Lakefront (PRNewsfoto/GRIT)

Industry-Leading Innovators are Developing Groundbreaking Sustainability, Inclusion and Regeneration Standards at New Chicago Megadevelopment CHICAGO PRNewswire -- Bronzeville Lakefront, a 100acre, $8.2 billion megadevelopment going up on Chicago’s South Side designed to be a racially and economically diverse mixed-use community, aims to set new standards locally and nationally for sustainability, inclusion, economic impact and healthy living. To make this groundbreaking concept come to life, the GRIT development team engaged three industry-leading strategic consultants: MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipient landscape architect Walter Hood; pioneering regenerative design architect Jason McLennan; and urban innovation company Sidewalk Labs. Strategic Consultants will Help GRIT Create a Sustainable Ecosystem Bronzeville Lakefront takes its name from the surrounding neighborhood of Bronzeville, which has been nationally known as a thriving hub for Black arts, culture and entrepreneurship for a century. But the area has suffered disinvestment and population loss in recent decades. For 128 years, this lakefront site held the Michael Reese Medical Center, a paragon of healthcare innovation and equity in its heyday. To honor the site’s significant legacy and ensure the development will spur economic growth and attract diverse residents and businesses, Bronzeville Lakefront will feature a broad mix of housing, dining options, offices, wet lab spaces and nine acres of sustainable green space for recreational use. Its anchor, the Bronzeville Innovation Center, will include community spaces and be powered by the Chicago ARC, a life sciences accelerator developed in partnership with Israel’s Sheba Medical Center, ranked a world’s top 10 hospital by Newsweek. “Our goal is to not only make Bronzeville Lakefront a vibrant live-work-learn-play community but also ensure it will stimulate significant, lasting and far-reaching economic impact on Chicago’s South Side,” GRIT partner and Farpoint Development Principal Regina Stilp said. “From regenerating the local economy with thousands of new jobs to setting new standards for green space and sustainability, we’re trying to create a district full of opportunities and centered around environmental justice and well-being.” Landscape Architect Walter Hood Will Help GRIT Create a New Urban Paradigm Building a new community to meet expansive and exacting objectives is a significant undertaking. “With specializations in environmental design, community development and citizen engagement, Walter Hood brings a holistic perspective honed by decades of experience and achievement to the project,” Stilp noted. “He’ll help us leverage the native ecology of the site itself, capitalize on local community assets and implement inclusive placemaking to create the most effective ecosystem possible at Bronzeville Lakefront.” Hood is known for his rare ability to anticipate elements communities want and need and integrate them into the public spaces he creates. In 2019, the MacArthur Foundation named him as a fellow (colloquially called “Genius Grant”) for “creating ecologically sustainable urban spaces that resonate with, and

enrich the lives of, current residents while also honoring communal histories.” Hood was also chosen as the first Robert R. Taylor Fellow at MIT for his “pioneering work in environmental design, particularly in the integration of history, race and urban design” and projects that “stand out for their sustained engagement with diverse local communities.” Architect Jason McLennan’s Living Building Challenge Will Foster Health and Wellness Regenerative design and nature-inspired architecture sound like aspirational building industry terms. Jason McLennan, who has pushed the boundaries on what is possible in the built environment with his Living Building Challenge, believes these approaches not only impact real communities and real lives for the better but are also critical to embrace now given issues surrounding sustainability, environmental justice and climate change. “When Jason introduced the Living Building Challenge, the design and construction industry rejected it as too stringent, too hard, too expensive and too out there,” Stilp said. “But Jason is skilled and effective at fighting uphill battles and today there are Living Buildings all over the world. We’re calling on him to help us carry this progressive paradigm forward not only in multiple individual structures but on a district-wide scale at Bronzeville Lakefront to create a regenerative and stable environment that also promotes health and wellness.” McLennan has been widely recognized for his work by the media and key industry organizations. In 2012, he was named an Ashoka Fellow for creating new practices in the built environment to improve health and well-being while increasing access to a diverse and productive natural world and also received the Buckminster Fuller Challenge, the world’s top prize for socially responsible design, for the Living Building Challenge. Think Tank Sidewalk Labs Applies AI-Powered Data to Technological Solutions “Sustainability is key to the economic impact and environmental justice we hope to achieve at Bronzeville Lakefront. It’s critical to maximize our natural resources, and that requires stateof- the-art infrastructure systems that can adapt to the community’s changing needs,” Stilp explained. “Sidewalk Labs has developed technological solutions we can use to design and build the most resilient and effective systems possible with respect to energy, water, mobility and waste.” Many of the solutions and strategies Sidewalk Labs, which has been absorbed by Google since being engaged by GRIT, conceived of or recommended are emergent. They will support the creation of a more sustainable and resilient energy system that will tap into clean thermal solutions and microgrids; minimize stormwater runoff and maximize recycling efforts from all water sources on the land; analyze all the development’s road and public transit usage to create efficiencies; and upcycle the development’s waste materials into new products. Legislation sponsored by State Senator Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago) to create the Real Estate Valuation Task Force to combat discrimination in the housing industry passed the Senate Thursday. “Discrimination in the housing industry goes back decades, and it has yet to be rectified today,” Hunter said. “Black and Brown people won’t have a fair chance at renting and owning a home until discrimination is addressed on a systemic level.” The Real Estate Valuation Task Force is a response to an unresolved history of federal housing agencies, including the Federal Home Owners’ Loan Corporation and the Federal Housing Administration, discriminating against Black and Brown people when underwriting real estate loans. Both agencies devalued property or refused to make loans secured by property in communities of color. The harmful consequences of this discrimination is still evident today. “This is more than a historical issue – people are still being denied housing opportunities because of their skin color,” Hunter said. “I am confident that the task force will identify trends so we can put an end to housing discrimination in Illinois.” Anyone who has experienced housing discrimination can file a complaint with the Illinois Department of Human Rights. House Bill 4410 moves to the House for concurrence.

IN-HOME PATIENTS TO RECEIVE EQUITABLE CARE UNDER HARRIS’S LAW

To ensure patients needing home health services receive adequate care, State Senator Napoleon Harris, III (D-Harvey) advanced legislation to require all state health insurance plans to offer coverage. “Home care offers individualized services that are tailored to the client’s health care needs and finances,” Harris said. “By ensuring all state insurance plans cover home services, Illinois can play a tremendous role in protecting the most vulnerable among us, including older residents, the chronically ill and individuals with disabilities.” House Bill 5585 will require all health insurance plans governed by state law issued on or after Jan. 1, 2024, to provide coverage for access to home health services for the duration of medically necessary care. Home health services will be offered to any individual at their residence to treat significant illnesses or conditions diagnosed by a licensed physician. House Bill 5585 passed the Senate and now heads to the governor for further review.

SIMMONS SPONSORS MEASURE TO STRENGTHEN LEAD MITIGATION PROCEDURES PASSES SENATE

To protect communities across Illinois from the deadly impact of lead, State Senator Mike Simmons (D-Chicago) is leading a measure to strengthen lead mitigation procedures. “Virtually every community across the state is affected by lead in our water supply,” said Simmons. “This bill provides a systemic response to a problem that is systemic in nature, is decades in the making, and often does the most injury to Black and Brown communities.” House Bill 4369 would require the Illinois Department of Public Health to follow up on lead mitigation notices by carrying out inspections to ensure the work has been completed. The current law merely permits an inspection, while this legislation will require and enforce lead mitigation efforts. Lead is a heavy metal and suspected carcinogen that was frequently used in paint, plumbing materials, and many other items before the 1980s. Today, it is mostly found in aging water pipes, contaminated soil, and peeling paint found on windows, baseboards, trim, and doors. No amount of lead exposure is considered safe for children or adults. “Removing lead from all housing and facilities is long overdue and is critical towards overall health equity and racial equity across Illinois,” Simmons said. “I am hopeful we can continue to work together on this systemic solution that ensures the people of Illinois can have access to clean drinking water.” House Bill 4369 passed the Senate and awaits further consideration.

The College of Health Sciences and the College of Pharmacy at CSU are critical to sustaining a pipeline of underrepresented professionals by educating a caring and competent, and diverse student body. CSU graduates have 100 percent job placement in nursing and occupational therapy and the College of Pharmacy is first in the Midwest for graduating underrepresented students with doctoral degrees. “The COVID-19 pandemic magnified alarming disparities in our healthcare system and exacerbated workforce shortages. Chicago State University has been leading the way in training students to address these challenges. That’s why I secured this new federal investment in CSU’s Health Simulation Lab to help train a diverse, highly-skilled workforce of medical professionals,” said U.S. Senator Dick Durbin. “The Health Sciences Simulation Lab will provide top-level training to our students and supply the diverse leadership needed in the health profession,” said Zaldwaynaka (“Z”) Scott, Esq., President of Chicago State University. “Located in the heart of Chicago’s South Side, CSU is uniquely positioned to be the center of training for Health Sciences professionals that represent the patients they serve.” Chicago State University (CSU), founded in 1867, is the oldest public university in the Chicago Metropolitan area. The University’s five colleges offer over 70 undergraduate and graduate degree-granting and non-degree programs. CSU is committed to equity in education, serving as the only U.S. Department of Education-designated four-year Predominantly Black Institution in Illinois and ranked by a Harvard economist in the top 4% of public and private universities nationwide in supporting our graduates’ economic mobility. The University serves as a prominent civic space on the greater South Side of Chicago by hosting a multitude of athletic, educational, cultural, and recreational activities. The University is located near public transit that provides convenient access to the campus. Visit www.csu.edu.

Seven Tips for Managing Caregiver Stress During National Stress Awareness Month This April Alzheimer’s Foundation of America Offering Helpful Information to Family Caregivers

NEW YORK (March 31, 2022)— Stress can damage your health if you do not manage it properly—especially if you are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia-related illness. As part of National Stress Awareness Month this April, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is providing seven tips to help caregivers manage their stress. “Stress management and self-care are essential for every Alzheimer’s caregiver. Untreated stress increases the risk of caregiver burnout and can cause high blood pressure, heart problems, anxiety, depression, and numerous other health issues,” said Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, AFA’s Director of Educational and Social Services. “Being proactive in dealing with stress has both short-term and long-term benefits for caregivers’ physical, mental, and emotional health, which is why it’s something that they should prioritize.” AFA suggests the following tips for Alzheimer’s caregivers to prevent and manage their stress: • Flexibility helps. A caregiver’s attitude plays a huge role in stress levels—if the caregiver is calm and relaxed, it helps the individual living with Alzheimer’s to be as well. Conversely, an angry, agitated caregiver increases the chances that the person for whom they are caring will be angry and agitated too. Be adaptable, be positive, and aim for constructive solutions to changing situations. • Deal with what you can control. You cannot control every stress-causing factor, but you can control how you react to them. Focusing on finding solutions to the problem can help reduce the stress it’s causing. • Mind your health. Inadequate rest, poor diet and lack of exercise can all exacerbate stress (and create other health prob-

lems as well). As best you can, prioritize getting sleep, eating right, drinking plenty of water and being active. You cannot provide quality care to a loved one if you don’t take care of yourself. • Clear and refresh your mind. Exercise, yoga, meditating, listening to music, walking, or even taking a few deep breaths can all help relax the mind and reduce stress. Find something that works for you and do it regularly! • Take things one day at a time. Resolving everything at once is both impossible and unrealistic—don’t hold yourself to that unreasonable expectation. Prioritize, set practical goals, do your best to achieve them, and take things one day at a time. • Stay in touch. There are so many ways to stay socially connected with family and friends—visits, FaceTime, phone calls, text messages, and emails, just to name a few. Disconnecting from your support structure and staying bottled-up increases stress. • Be open with your feelings. Sometimes just talking about your stress can help relieve it. Whether it’s with someone in your support structure, a professional or even a stranger, don’t be reluctant to open up. AFA’s Helpline has licensed social workers available for caregivers seven days to provide support or even just listen. The AFA Helpline is available seven days a week to help provide information and support regarding caregiver stress and other caregiving questions. Connect with a licensed social worker by calling 866-232-8484, web chatting at www.alzfdn. org or sending a text message to 646-586-5283. The web chat and text message features can serve individuals in more than 90 different languages.

Improve Your Home and Its Value (Family Features) Home upgrades happen for different reasons but enhancing your home’s curb appeal and value are often at the top of the list. These projects can make it easier to enjoy your home knowing they carry a return on investment of up to 92%, according to the Remodeling 2021 Cost vs. Value Report published in “Remodeling Magazine.” Plus, you’ll have the added benefit of knowing you’re making a sound investment should you decide to sell down the road.

high-ROI ideas to increase the value of your house

Stone Veneer Stone veneer is an upgrade that adds warmth and texture with the look of natural stone, but without the expense. It’s also a durable product that is low maintenance, so you don’t have to worry about sealing or painting. With the variety of styles and colors available, it’s easy for homeowners to mix and match to create a custom look. Mortarless options like ClipStone are designed to be installed with screws and common tools, making them accessible options for both professionals and DIYers. With a built-in water management system, overlapping edges to minimize gaps, reversible outside corners and a variety of accessories, mortarless options allow homeowners to achieve the look of traditional masonry without the hassle. Garage Doors Exterior features often bring a big return on investment because a home with strong curb appeal can make a great first impression on potential buyers. The garage doors are no exception. If you think of your garage doors as a purely functional element of your home, you may be surprised to learn garage door replacement is actually the best home upgrade you can make, according to the report. Garage doors aren’t just functional; they can be a focal point of your home’s exterior design, completely transforming the exterior. Depending on the style and features you choose, an updated garage door is also a smart strategy for managing climate and adding security to your home. Windows Windows are another smart investment for numerous reasons. Not only do they provide a sophisticated presence that can greatly enhance curb appeal, upgraded windows play a major role in energy conservation. Homeowners also rely on windows to make a bold statement. For example, Simonton black exterior windows and patio doors can help perfect a wide range of architectural styles including farmhouse, modern, industrial and contemporary designs. This award-winning line of vinyl windows offers homeowners a

variety of styles and colors to customize both their home’s interior and exterior spaces. The windows are AAMA Gold Certified, passing some of the industry’s most stringent quality assurance testing for air leakage, water penetration and wind pressure – resulting in low-maintenance windows with lasting durability, weather resistance and energy efficiency. Deck Additions Adding a deck is an easy way to improve your home’s exterior appeal and increase your livable space. Wooden decks rank in the top 10 for ROI, according to the report. An attractive deck situated off the living room or kitchen can make those rooms feel larger, especially when you’re entertaining, and guests can circulate freely between indoor and outdoor spaces. A well-constructed deck also serves as a transition point from the home to the backyard, where you may invest in even more outdoor living features. You’ll achieve the greatest ROI by designing your deck to integrate seamlessly with your home and landscaping and even stone accents. Also take functional features into consideration, including privacy and protection from the wind and sun. Depending on your climate, it may be beneficial to design a deck for maximum shade during the warm months or to make the most of sunlight during the cool seasons. Features like built-in kitchens, stone accents, TV mounts and access to water features all lend high-end custom touches that also boost ROI.

Siding If you’re considering updating your home’s color and trim, re-siding is a great way to transform its curb appeal while also earning a hefty return on the investment and giving yourself (or a future owner) the gift of lower maintenance living. With 15 different collections, Ply Gem Mastic has an array of solutions to help homeowners transform their living spaces such as board and batten, hand-split shake shingles, traditional Dutch lap siding and more. Each is available with detailed wood grain texture in a variety of rich, ontrend colors, including increasingly popular dark options. Entry Doors One of the simplest projects in the report, a new entry door can also make a big impact because it’s one of the first things potential buyers see. Not only can a steel door help make a good first impression, it also serves as an updated security feature and can offer additional insulation, which makes for a good investment if you live in an area that experiences extreme weather.
