NATIONAL SAFETY COUNCIL: 2018 WAS DEADLIEST YEAR ON RECORD FOR HOT CAR DEATHS Tragically, more children died in hot cars in the United States in 2018 than any other year on record, the National Safety Council recently confirmed. Fifty-one children died last year of pediatric vehicular heatstroke, topping the single-year high of 49 set in 2010. In response, the Council is releasing a free online training “Children in Hot Cars” that provides vital information about pediatric vehicular heatstroke and outlines how distraction and other behaviors can lead to these unnecessary deaths. The “Children in Hot Cars” e-learning course provides information about why cars heat up so quickly, why children in particular can succumb to increasing temperatures in cars, and what parents, caregivers and others can do to prevent these needless deaths. UNDERWOOD BILL TO PROTECT PEOPLE WITH PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS ADVANCES OUT OF EDUCATION AND LABOR COMMITTEE The Education and Labor committee recently considered and passed Rep. Lauren Underwood’s legislation, H.R. 1010, which would help protect Americans with pre-existing conditions by overturning an Administration rule that expands short-term, limited duration insurance, commonly known as “junk plans.” The bill has already been considered and passed by the Energy and Commerce Committee. “No person in this country should be denied insurance coverage as a result of a pre-existing condition. Americans deserve quality and affordable healthcare and I’m proud to see the very first bill I introduced passed by a committee on which I serve,” said Congresswoman Underwood. In February, Underwood joined members to introduce H.R. 1010 following the Administration’s decision to finalize the Short-Term, Limited Duration Insurance rule, which excludes protections for pre-existing conditions and essential health benefits provided by the Affordable Care Act.

Over 40 Chicago Students Celebrate National Volunteer Week On The South Side BY KATHERINE NEWMAN
Students from Perspectives Charter School’s Rodney D. Joslin Campus in South Loop recently traveled to the South Side of the city to participate in a day of volunteering in honor of National Volunteer Week. The students visited iGrow Chicago’s Peace House in Englewood and created care packages for members of their community. This volunteer initiative was part of the national WE Volunteer Now campaign which empowers young people to get active in their communities and lead volunteer projects that will create positive change. The WE Volunteer Now campaign was made possible by The Allstate Foundation and WE which is a family of organizations that support people doing good in their communities. The mission of iGrow Chicago is to take Englewood from a community that’s not just surviving, but to a community that is thriving. The organization does this through mentorship and skill building, restorative justice and community building, yoga and mindfulness, creative expression, and urban farming, according to information from iGrow Chicago. In the spring of 2014, iGrow Chicago opened their Peace House which was previously an abandoned home in West Englewood which they were able to transform into a community gathering space. “We have a peace team at our school called the Peace Ambassadors and twice a month we do a peace initiative where we take the kids out of the building, or sometimes do something in the building, to teach them how to resolve conflict peacefully, the importance of giving in order to get, and that we learn by teaching others,” said Rhonda Woods, educa-

tor at Perspectives Rodney D. Joslin Campus. The students who participated in the volunteer day at iGrow ranged from 11 years old to 18 years old and were tasked with assembling care packages for iGrow who will then distribute them to community members that are in need. “We put in toiletries, socks, soap, some toiletries for girls, and stuff for the babies like pampers. It’s all stuff that some people just can’t afford or that they’re not really able to get at the time. We are giving back to them and actually you see some kids putting a lot in the bag and they have smiles on their faces,” said Naomi, a student from Perspectives Charter School’s Rodney D. Joslin Campus.

All of this was made possible by the Allstate Foundation and a local Allstate Agency Owner, Barbara Brown, was on site during the volunteering event to show her support for the students. “This is important for our youth because they are our future. The youths are the future of this country and the future of companies such as Allstate. We want to be able to support that group and support those individuals as much as we can to let them know that we believe in them and we have confidence in their abilities to change the world,” said Brown. The ‘Daughter of Englewood’ makes history Continued from page 1 BY WENDELL HUTSON Contributing Writer
The daughter of a former Englewood alderman made history on April 2 when she was elected alderman of the 16th Ward at age 30. Stephanie Coleman, who turned 31-yearsold on April 13, will be among the new City Council members sworn in on May 20 along with Mayor-elect Lori Lightfoot. Coleman said she adopted the nickname ‘Daughter of Englewood’ since she was born and raised in Englewood. “It hasn’t totally hit me yet [that I am the youngest black woman to be elected alderman] because I have been working so hard to meet the needs of my constituents,” said Coleman. “I ran against Alderman Foulkes four years ago and lost. And while I was wounded, I was not weary. I never stopped knocking on doors, registering new voters and engaging with the community.” Despite a low voter turnout, Coleman garnered more than 67 percent of the vote cast in the April 2 runoff election, and won 44 percent in the Feb. 26 election, according to the Chicago Board of Elections. And in the 2015 runoff election, Coleman lost to Foulkes by a mere 143 votes. In her first interview since defeating incumbent Alderman Toni Foulkes (16th), Coleman discussed her vision for improving the Englewood, Chicago Lawn, Gage Park, and New City neighborhoods located within her ward. “Number one for me is public safety. We had three recent shootings in the 16th ward and it’s

not even hot yet. We have to really get a hold of this and pray for one another and work with the police to prevent violence from occurring,” she said. “In my first 100 days as alderman, I plan to take an inventory of the ward by walking block by block and assessing the needs of each neighborhood. Improving our schools and
bringing more economic development to the ward are also goals of mines.” As the Democratic committeeman in the 16th Ward and the daughter of former Alderman Shirley Coleman, who served the ward from 1991 to 2007, the youngest Coleman said her focus now is to continue working with residents to make their way of living in the 16th the very best. “After speaking with constituents, I learned that they want someone who is going to listen to them, someone who is going to fight for them and someone who is going to deliver city services,” added Coleman, who is single with no children. “New leadership is always a good thing because it produces change.” However, Coleman stopped short of endorsing term-limits for aldermen. “We would have to do the due diligence first before we can make a determination on what to do,” explained Coleman. “After all, we are the third largest city in the country and I think it would be a good idea to look at other municipalities with term limits to see what effect, if any, it had on their leadership.” Foulkes, who served as alderman of the 15th Ward from 2007 to 2015 and alderman of the 16th Ward since 2015, said she wishes Coleman nothing but the best. Prior to becoming an alderman, Foulkes worked at Jewel as a baker and now she plans to work in real estate. “I am finishing up a real estate course now and that will be my new venture after I leave City Hall next month. I’ve have always wanted to be an entrepreneur but never had the time to pursue my passion,” explained Foulkes. “It’s
time for me to make some ‘real’ money. I loved being an alderman but the only thing I did not like was getting the same paycheck every two weeks. If you make a $100,000 a year or more on your job you can be a millionaire with your own business.” The city of Chicago classifies an alderman as a part-time job with an annual salary of $103,000. One thing Foulkes said that hurt her re-election was her absence from social media. “Stephanie did a good job of keeping herself on social media. She’s a smart young lady and has a mom to help guide her through the pitfalls of Chicago politics,” added Foulkes. “I did not have an insider to guide me through the ropes when I was first elected so I had to find my own way.” In an unusual move, Alderman Carrie Austin (34th), who is also chairman of the City Council’s Budget Committee, endorsed Coleman over Foulkes. “It’s rare that an alderman publically supports a challenger over an incumbent but Alderman Austin chose to do so, and her endorsement certainly gave Stephanie a boost,” said Foulkes. Austin declined comment. In the end, Coleman said she is looking forward to a smooth transition and thanked Foulkes for her service. “She did the best she could to improve a ward faced with many challenges and that’s all anyone could do,” said Coleman. “Now, I plan to pick the ball up and keep things moving forward. And hopefully make things better for the residents of the 16th Ward.”
REPORT: Structural Racism Eliminated Black Farmers BY STACY M. BROWN NNPA Newswire Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia
A new report from the Center for American Progress (CAP) provides insight on how decades of structural racism within the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has led to the virtual elimination of black farmers. A century ago, roughly 14 percent of farmers were black. By 2012, that number had shrunk to 1.58 percent, according to the report, “Progressive Governance Can Turn the Tide for Black Farmers,” by Abril Castro and Zoe Willingham. The study examined the ways in which discriminatory policies by the U.S. government, and especially the USDA, throughout the 20th century and up to the Trump era have led to the elimination of black farmers. The authors said they found that black farmers have had less access to credit and less access to extension programs than their white counterparts, preventing black farmers from
modernizing and scaling up their farms as white farmers have done. The loss of black farmland has had a profound impact on rural black communities, which today suffer from severe economic challenges, among them a poverty rate twice that of rural white communities. “This report illustrates the importance of understanding American history and the impact of systematic racism in our agricultural system,” Danyelle Solomon, vice president of Race and Ethnicity Policy at CAP, said in a news release. The report gives several policy recommendations for protecting the livelihoods of black farmers: l Protecting inherited family farms l Expanding research and technical assistance for farmers of color l Regular oversight and audits of the USDA by the Government Accountability Office l Expanding access to land for black farmers “As the report notes, black farmers were systematically removed from the farming industry through

government policy and practices,” Solomon said. Between 1920 and 2007, black farmers lost 80 percent of their land, www.thechicagocitizen.com
according to the report. “Moving forward, policymakers must ensure that agricultural policy includes targeted and intentional
policies that correct these harms by expanding access to land and technical resources for black farmers,” Solomon said.

When these procedures are combined it not only provides optimal results, but it can be more economical for patients.” The most-performed minimally invasive cosmetic procedures and their national average surgeon fees: l Wrinkle treatment injections (such as Botox®, Dysport®) (7,437,378 procedures): National average surgeon fee of $397 l Chemical peel (1,384,327 procedures): National average surgeon fee of $669 l Laser hair removal (1,077,490 procedures): National average surgeon fee of $285 l Microdermabrasion (709,413 procedures): National average surgeon fee of $131 Percentage Increases and Decreases The national average surgeon fee for breast augmentation surgery increased 2.8 percent from 2017. The cost for neurotoxin injections, like Botox® and Dysport®, increased by 3 percent from 2017, while the cost for laser hair removal decreased by 2.7 percent. Chemical peel and microdermabrasion fees decreased by 4 percent compared to last year. What’s Not Included Cost factors for most cosmetic surgeries include the type of surgery chosen, location of surgery, surgeon’s experience and insurance coverage. Fees generally do not include anesthesia, operating room facilities or other related expenses. “Cost is always a consideration when considering an elective surgery,” said Dr. Matarasso. “However, the least expensive procedure is the one done correctly the first time.” “When considering a procedure, ask your friends and family, review before and after pictures and take the time to consult with more than one board-certified ASPS member,” Dr. Matarasso continued. “A patient’s primary focus should be selecting a plastic surgeon who places a quality result and the patient’s safety at the forefront of every procedure.”

If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the bonus interest rate on all eligible savings accounts, and discounts or fee waivers on other products and services, will discontinue and revert to the Bank’s then-current applicable rate or fee. For bonus interest rates on time accounts, this change will occur upon renewal. If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the remaining unlinked Wells Fargo Portfolio Checking or Wells Fargo Prime Checking account will be converted to another checking product or closed. © 2019 Wells Fargo Bank, N.A.
