ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN RIGHTS RELEASES MODEL SEXUAL HARASSMENT PREVENTION TRAINING PROGRAM The Illinois Department of Human Rights (IDHR) recently released its model Sexual Harassment Prevention Training program for Illinois employers in compliance with Public Act 1010221 (commonly referred to as the Workplace Transparency Act). Formerly Senate Bill 75, Public Act 101-0221 was signed into law by Governor Pritzker in August 2019. Under this Act, Illinois employers are required to train employees on sexual harassment prevention by December 31, 2020, and on an annual basis thereafter. This requirement applies to all employers with employees working in the state. Employers must either develop their own sexual harassment prevention training program that equals or exceeds the minimum standards for sexual harassment prevention training outlined in Section 2-109(B) of the Illinois Human Rights Act (IHRA), or they may use the model training provided by the IDHR. Englewood gets COVID-19 testing facility Continued from page 1 BY TIA CAROL JONES

Stephanie Coleman, 16th Ward Alderman, began lobbying for a COVID-19 testing site in her ward as reports showed that African Americans were being disproportionately affected and dying from the virus. Then, reports showed that the Latino population was also being disproportionately affected. On Monday, May 4, the testing facility located at 5147 S. Ashland, opened in Englewood. The testing facility will serve residents who live in the Back of the Yards neighborhood as well as New City communities of Englewood. It is next to the Access Community Health Network site at 5153 S. Ashland. Coleman said up until last week, no testing facility was available in Englewood nor accessible via public transportation, although there was a “dire need” to have a testing facility in the area. “There are locations in Waukegan and the south suburbs, but we didn’t have one right here on the south side to service our community,” she said. Coleman said she worked with Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Governor J.B. Pritzker, as well as Access and community organizations to help bring the facility to the community. She credited Donna Thompson, chief executive officer of Access, for listening and meeting the needs of the community by building out the facility. She said the testing process takes 7-10 minutes, and within two-to four days, people can get their results. She said she’s very impressed with the testing process and how easy and simple it is, especially with senior citizens because “they’re already shaken up by everything

going on and afraid to even come out,” she added. Coleman said what’s great about the Access testing process is that you don’t just get your test and get the results, there is a follow-up process that happens after the testing is done. She said, hopefully the site could serve as a model to other communities such as Auburn-Gresham and other communities on the south side. According to Access Community Health Network, the tests are free for patients and if patients are insured, the insurance company will be billed. If the patient is uninsured, they will not be billed for the service. Cristina Sotelino, spokesperson for Access Community Health Network, said Access is currently doing 500 tests per week at the site and will adjust the number, if needed. The testing site is open from 8 a.m. to noon, Monday-Friday, for scheduled appointments. The facility is open to senior citizens from 8 to 9 a.m. every day. Once a telehealth screening appointment is scheduled, Access will help schedule a testing appointment. “We’ve served this community for more than 20 years and we wanted to provide a testing site in the community for the community. That’s why we first did community virtual town halls last week with key community partners to make sure area residents knew about the testing site first and could get first access to the facility,” Sotelino said. “We had unused space next to our health center, and we custom-built a testing site to provide both patients and staff with the safest environment possible,” she added. Grant Aims To Combat Gun Violence on the South Side BY WENDELL HUTSON Contributing Writer

A new approach to combating gun violence by Mayor Lori Lightfoot is to enlist nonprofits to filter conflict resolution techniques to residents especially youth in urban neighborhoods like Roseland on the Far South Side. “Gun violence is not only a public safety issue, it’s a public health crisis,” contends Lightfoot. “That’s why through this monumental down payment, we are putting tools directly into the hands of our community-based outreach workers, who every day utilize de-escalation skills to interrupt violence, prevent retaliation and build positive relationships with those who are at the highest risk of violence.” A $6 million grant by the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) will be disbursed to 11 organizations including the Uhlich Child Advocate Network (UCAN) and CeaseFire Roseland to provide crisis intervention and de-escalation services to further build on the city’s new approach to reducing violence. Based in North Lawndale, UCAN has been providing these services since its inception more than a century ago, according to Adrienne Johnson, vice president of violence intervention and prevention services for UCAN. “We have been working in Rose-

land now for almost three years and our counselors and case managers work with youth to help mediate conflicts,” said Johnson. Basically, UCAN walks with them through life, whether it’s helping them to get a GED (General Education Diploma), standing with them in court or assisting them in finding employment,” she said. UCAN will also be among nine organizations to share a $1.5 million grant towards programming to expand the capacity of trauma-informed victim support services in the communities that are most impacted by violence, said Dr. Allison Arwardy, commissioner for the CDPH. Arwardy said CDPH is encouraged that Chicago has used a data-driven approach to create a system

that is responsive to preventing the escalation of violence in communities that suffer the greatest burden while at the same time, pairing in those communities, trauma-informed resources needed to promote recovery, resilience, and restoration. She added that over the next few months, the nonprofit Metropolitan Family Services (MFS) would work with community-based organizations located in what she described, as the city’s 15 priority communities that experienced high levels of violence over the past three years, and that each organization would receive $150,000 to $400,000 each. The grant will initially go to MFS, which has a Roseland site, and would then disburse individual grants to the

Popeyes is offering out-of-work musicians an at-home-gig to record its jingle Popeyes is giving out-of-work musicians the chance of a gig, saying it will hire some of them to record its “Love That Chicken From Popeyes” jingle for use in commercials. At first, the idea was to hire musicians in New Orleans, the fried chicken chain’s hometown, where jazz clubs and other establishments are shuttered due to the coronavirus pandemic. But Popeyes soon realized that musicians are looking for work nationwide, so it’s searching broadly for people to record videos of their takes on the jingle for a chance to be selected. The chosen musicians’ work will be used in TV and radio spots. Popeyes says it will pay a one-time fee to the musicians for the use of their recordings, but declined to divulge the payment terms. While other restaurants are struggling to stay afloat, Popeyes is still selling lots of those chicken sandwiches as well as plenty of family-sized meals. After a blip in business in the last two weeks of March, when sales were about flat with a year ago, Popeyes’ daily same-store sales returned to pre-COVID-19 levels by the end of April, parent company Restaurant Brands International said recently in a news release. Popeyes’ first-quarter sales at longstanding locations rose a staggering 26.2 percent and were up 29.2 percent in the U.S. Even Restaurant Brands used the word “remarkable” to describe the 32.3-percent jump in first-quarter systemwide sales at Popeyes, gains unseen anywhere else, including at sibling chains Burger King and Tim Hortons, or at competitors such as KFC. He added most of their partner organizations have begun doing the work in their respective communities and by June 1, they expect to offer legal aid as well. Moving forward, Bryant said the long-term goal for MFS is to help build strong relationships with people who we know are vulnerable to gun violence, mostly perpetrators. “We want to help them turn their lives around. That’s why we will pay guys in the communities we are in $300 a week to get their GED,” said Bryant. “I tell guys to take advantage of this opportunity because with a GED, you can then learn a skill trade and that could lead to a $40,000 a year job.” The other organizations and

neighborhoods identified for the grant are Auburn Gresham and Englewood-Target Area Development; Austin-Institute for Nonviolence Chicago; Back of the Yards-Precious Blood Ministries; Chicago Lawn-Southwest Organizing Project; East Garfield Park-Breakthrough Ministries; Greater Grand Crossing-Acclivus; Humboldt Park-Alliance of Local Services; Little Village-New Life Ministries; South Shore-Claretian Associates; and West Garfield Park-Institute for Nonviolence Chicago. And Bryant said collaborating with these organizations on combating gun violence would ultimately lead to better communities. “Our local partners engage and build trusting relationships with individuals and groups most vulnerable to gun violence and mobilize and provide them with a comprehensive set of services that lead to their healing and the healing of our communities,” said Bryant.

What You Need to Know About Filing Your 2019 Taxes StatePoint - Spring is the season of warmer weather and blossoming flowers, but it is also – usually – the season of taxes. Tax Day is typically April 15, but the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently extended the deadline for filing and paying your 2019 federal income taxes to July 15, 2020. While this gives you more time to get your tax records in order, the IRS recommends that anyone expecting to receive a tax refund should file as soon as possible. According to the IRS, most refunds are being issued within three weeks of a tax return’s acceptance. You should also double check your state’s tax deadlines. Some states have announced tax filing or payment extensions, but other deadlines remain in place. Here are five other changes to keep in mind while you prepare your 2019 taxes:

• There is no longer a federal tax penalty for not having health insurance. However, some states will charge their own penalties for taxpayers who did not have health insurance in 2019. • The standard deduction increased to $24,800 for married couples filing jointly and to $12,400 for single filers. • If you received, sold, sent or exchanged any virtual currency in 2019, you will need to report that on your tax return. • Mortgage insurance premiums above $600 are now deductible. Mortgage premiums can also be retroactively applied to 2018. • The Child Tax Credit doubled to $2,000 per child, up to $1,400 of which is refundable. The credit is also available to more families for the 2019 tax year, since the income thresholds for when this benefit phases out were raised to $400,000

for married couples filing jointly and $200,000 for individual filers. Experts say it is never too early to begin thinking about and planning for the next year’s taxes. Pirain now estimates that a

If the ceiling has never been painted, you may be able to remove the popcorn texture yourself; otherwise, hiring a professional should get the job done quickly. With Social Distancing has caused regular family gathering to be postponed, they decided to utilize their time differently. The COVID-19 Pandemic has left many across the city without access to proper facial mask. With so many in need these days community Service has become the number one thing to do when you want to show up for others in need especially during these unprecedented times. Happy to do their part Members of a local Christian-based organization wanted to do their part for the community, so they teamed up with 21st Ward Alderman Howard Brookins Jr. to pass out face mask and literature. The group went door-to-door in the Lowden Homes located on 95th Street in the city's south-side dropping mask in each mail box for Mothers Day.
