POSITIVE MESSAGE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

Elizabeth Elie, who goes by the stage name Lizzie G, spreads a message of positivity, anti-bullying and unity. Lizzie G was always musically inclined. She taught herself how to play the drums and plays the piano. In her teenage years, she started to have a love of music producing. REP. ROBIN KELLY CELEBRATES INFRASTRUCTURE WEEK

Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, residents of Illinois Second Congressional District are benefiting from a generational investment of over $41 million in their public infrastructure.

Performer bring positive message for young people

The positive response from her peers was the encouragement she needed to continue. Lizzie G pursued music more in college. In grad school, she learned how to market and brand herself. What started off as a hobby became a business with Lizzie G Entertainment.

Lizzie G is of Haitian descent and is a Seventh Day Adventist. Her involvement in the choir at church and having faith in God has inspired her. “I feel like He gave me a voice and that’s how I want to use it. I want to use my voice to send a message,” she said.

Lizzie G has been influenced by Queen Latifah, MC Lyte and Missy Elliott. She described them as women who embodied Hip Hop and she wanted to be able to do what they did, with her own little twist, and go the positive route.

Lizzie G’s music has a message and doesn’t contain profanity. All of her lyrics are clean and are meant to encourage people. Her hope is that the people who listen to her music are motivated to reach their goals and strive for success. She also wants her music to be enjoyable for all ages.

While she is influenced by Drill rap, Lizzie G didn’t want to go that route. She wanted to be and do something different. She believes because she has an education, she wants to educate others through her music. Lizzie G believes young people are the next generation and leaders of tomorrow. She performs her positive raps at schools. She has a song called “No Bully

Zone.”

“With everything going on, with the social media boom, with us coming out of this pandemic, our youth really need positive reinforcement. Bullying is occurring a lot on social media, in our classrooms, and I want to be the voice to amplify the message of stop bullying, stop judging one another, stop talking bad to one another. Let’s embrace everybody’s differences, let’s unite,” she said.

Lizzie G uses her music and her performances at schools to encourage students to stay in school and pursue their dreams. She sees the challenges young people are facing and how those challenges are impacting them. She wants to energize them when she is performing. She wants it to be a time when they can be free and have it reflect a peaceful environment.

School leaders have told Lizzie G that having her come in to perform has led to a more peaceful environment in the schools. The students are excited to have a performer come into school and pour into them for an hour. She is motivating the kids and inspiring them with her message.

Lizzie G hopes her presence in the schools results in conflict resolution and a better environment for the students to learn. She has received messages and testimonials from parents about the impact she has had on the students. “It just keeps me inspired to want to reach more schools and reach more students. If we’re able to reach more schools, I feel like a lot of those burdens can be lifted,” she said.

$3 million to advance homeownership

As part of the $3 million commitment, we are developing strategic partnerships with more than 60 organizations across our footprint including with national organizations such as the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB), a network of Black real estate professionals, along with the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP) and the Asian Real Estate Association of America (AREAA), supporting minority homeownership within the Hispanic and Asian communities, respectively.

Chicago Universities to Advance Broadband Equity Through $3.25 Million Grant

CHICAGO – Chicago State University (CSU), Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU), University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), Northern Illinois University (NIU), and the Illinois Innovation Network (IIN) recently received $3.25 million in funding under the Connecting Minority Communities Pilot Program within the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA).

The pilot program, with CSU as the primary investigator and assistance from IIN, will tackle the digital disparity in communities that have endured historic segregation and disinvestment.

The program, named Advancing Broadband Equity through Learning Intermediaries in the Neighborhoods of Chicago (ABELINC), will tackle the digital divide by expanding broadband, distributing laptops and improving digital literacy through navigators conducting community outreach and training. In Chicago, over 15% of households don’t have access

to internet or internet-enabled devices including laptop computers, tablets, or smartphones, which impacts families’ ability to access education and workplace opportunities.

“Chicago State University welcomes the opportunity to support equitable access to critical digital resources to our community,” said CSU President Zaldwaynaka Scott. “This grant allows CSU to use our campus resources, faculty expertise and partnerships to help bridge the digital divide long experienced by communities on Chicago’s South Side. By working with our partner institutions, we are increasing access to opportunities and resources for our students and neighbors that are critical to success in today’s digital world.”

Building Broadband Access & Literacy

Together, CSU and NEIU will run the digital navigator program that will provide training on basic digital literacy, digital conduct, online resources and tools, and internet subscriptions and device purchases. The navigators will come from and target specific Zip codes and populations, including returning citizens, seasonal transitory and undocumented workers, and single parents. The navigators will also provide laptops to households of priority neighborhoods to fill gaps in the ability to access telehealth resources and educational and employment opportunities.

Parents who live in districts without the option of full-day kindergarten are often faced with additional barriers to preparing their children for early elementary school. These barriers include, but are not limited to, mid-day transportation, loss of income due to being home with the child or finding additional childcare, and ensuring developmentally appropriate activities are being provided throughout the day.

Currently, it is optional for school districts to offer full-day kindergarten. Lightford’s measure would provide full-day kindergarten options with developmentally appropriate play-based learning opportunities for families throughout the state.

“Full-day kindergarten provides families with comprehensive, stable learning environments so children can be prepared for the demands of early elementary school,” said Lightford. “Families in all corners of the state deserve to have that opportunity and option available to them.”

SENATE APPROVES BELT MEASURE TO ENSURE FAIR COMPENSATION FOR TEACHERS

State Senator Christopher Belt passed a measure out of the Senate Wednesday that aims to ensure fair compensation for teachers and protect school boards from undue financial burdens.

“This measure empowers our state’s educators and recognizes the invaluable contributions they make every day,” said Belt (Swansea). “Not only would this enhance the financial well-being of teachers, but it also would contribute to maintaining the high standard of education in our schools across the state.”

House Bill 300 would establish the Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability as the agency responsible for adjusting the teacher minimum salary in accordance with annual increases in inflation rates.

The legislation also addresses concerns related to potential higher pension contributions resulting from increased minimum teacher salaries. It would ensure that school boards would not be penalized for fulfilling their obligation to provide competitive compensation to teachers.

“The elements in this measure promote fairness, stability and excellence in education,” said Belt. “By prioritizing fair compensation for our teachers and supporting school boards, we are making a profound investment in the future of our state.”

Small Business Owners – Catalysts for Economic Growth

Almost half of all U.S. employees work for small businesses, defined as companies with fewer than 500 employees, and a staggering 99 percent of all U.S. companies fall under the “small business” designation, according to the Small Business Association. Entrepreneurship can be a steppingstone to wealth generation. In recent years, however, small business owners have faced many challenges, and that’s particularly true for those in majority Black, Hispanic and Latino communities. Fortunately, data is showing a strong trend toward improvement and normalization.

Many small businesses have more cash than they did before the pandemic, notably the smallest businesses with less than $100,000 in annual revenue. With more than two-thirds of small businesses expecting increased revenue and sales this year, they’re planning to put that money back into their workforce, to hire and retain employees by increasing wages and offering upskilling and training opportunities, according to JPMorgan Chase’s Business Leaders Outlook survey.

Black, Hispanic and Latino small business owners in particular say they’re optimistic about the year ahead, and the number of new businesses formed in cities like Chicago is at an all-time high – in Chicago, new business formation is up 64% over the last three years.

“Minority-owned businesses are fueling the U.S. economy – driving growth, innovation and job creation,” said Mikal Quarles, head of Chase Business Banking Racial Equity Strategies. “It’s important that we provide them with tools, resources and network capital to help them take their business to the next level and create and sustain wealth long-term.”

Citing access to capital as one of the top barriers for small businesses, banks play a critical role as catalyst in small business success. Over the last few years, JPMor-

gan Chase has doubled-down on its commitment to help minority-owned business succeed, including through its $30 billion Racial Equity Commitment that seeks to help close the racial wealth gap, such as through new mentorship programs, events, and expanded access to credit for business owners.

Small business owners have a plethora of resources and information available to help them at any stage of their business. Whether it’s looking for guidance on how to start or grow a small business, or access financial tools, here are some important steps to consider:

• Starting a business: Prospective owners can consider a few important foundational pieces, including writing a business plan, establishing a business bank account and applying for and filing the right permits and licenses. Also, prospective business owners should think through their business structure – will they be a sole proprietor, operate an LLC or choose another structure? Gathering funds and deciding where to do business are two more key steps to take before finally launching a company.

• Growing a business: As business owners continue to generate revenue, they can shift their focus to growing and scaling their business. Future financing plans could include applying for additional loans, grants or investor funding. Business banking accounts can be leveraged to help meet the goals of a business owner.

Forging ahead: If a business owner has a few years of success under their belt, they can discover new ways to optimize their business and streamline operations. That includes keeping cash flow healthy, continuing to build their customer base, and looking for digital tools to help simplify processes like invoicing and payments. Small business owners can also access new tools designed to help lower the barrier to entry to accessing capital and the tools needed to set them up for success. Last year, JPMorgan Chase introduced a Special Purpose Credit Program to help expand credit access in majority Black, Hispanic and Latino communities for business owners who otherwise might not be approved or receive it on less favorable terms.

JPMorgan Chase also expanded its free one-on-one coaching program to 45 trained senior business consultants in 21 U.S. cities, where they’re providing mentoring and advice to Hispanic, Latino and Black business owners within the community on everything from boosting creditworthiness to managing cash flow to effective marketing.

Chicago Public Schools Honors School Nurses During Nurse Appreciation Week

CHICAGO – Chicago Public Schools (CPS) honored school nurses Friday, May 12, during a National Nurse Appreciation Week celebration that highlighted the critical role of school nurses in supporting student health and well being, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. During the event, District leaders presented five school nurses with the District’s Recognition Of Service Extraordinaires (ROSE) Award.

“Our school nurses are an essential part of the District’s whole-student approach to student success,” said CPS CEO Pedro Martinez. “The services our school nurses provide sets students up to learn, grow and thrive both in our classrooms and in their communities. I am proud to recognize our exceptional nurses this week and thank them for their service to our students and schools.”

Since 2019, the District’s intentional recruitment and retention efforts have resulted in a 72 percent increase in the number of school nurses in CPS schools, going from 311 nurses in 2019 to 536 nurses in 2023. The District’s investment in student health supports is part of a holistic strategy to expand student access to nurses, counselors, social workers and psychologists to support students’ social, emotional, physical and psychological needs. Today’s celebration honored the District’s school nurses, more than 200 of whom were nominated for ROSE Awards.
