CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND LEAP INNOVATIONS RECEIVE $14 MILLION IN GRANTS Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and LEAP Innovations, a nonprofit organization that works with schools and educators to implement personalized learning, announced recently that they received grants totaling $14 million from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) to meet the growing demand from schools looking to introduce or expand personalized learning instructional models. “Successful personalized learning starts with engaged and passionate teachers looking to support each student with an individualized path that helps them reach their goals,” said CPS CEO Dr. Janice K. Jackson. “This grant will allow more dedicated educators and administrators to receive training and resources to implement personalized learning and best meet the unique needs of their students.”

EXPANDING THE WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY FOR STROKE PATIENTS WITH IRAPID People who have suffered a stroke will benefit from new diagnostic software now being offered at OSF HealthCare hospitals in Bloomington, Peoria, and Rockford, Illinois. The iRapid software uses noninvasive CT imaging of the head that takes less than a minute to complete. “iRapid helps us determine who is going to benefit best,” said Ajeet Gordhan, MD, Interventional Radiologist with OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington. “The idea behind this is to give them a functional outcome and that’s the key. We are trying to rescue salvageable brain in patients who, in the past, may not have had that opportunity and although they might still have a deficit, the deficit may be not as profound and they may be able to attain some level of functional capability.”

CUNNINGHAM AND HURLEY MOVE TO STREAMLINE TAX DOLLARS TO CHICAGO FIRE DEPARTMENT SPRINGFIELD, IL – Rank-and-file Chicago firefighters

would have greater oversight and control of funding intended for their department under legislation passed by the Illinois Senate today. Sponsored by State Senator Bill Cunningham and State Representative Fran Hurley, House Bill 5197 would establish a Foreign Fire Insurance Board, an entity that will be entrusted with the expenditure of fire insurance fees collected exclusively from insurance companies whose corporate headquarters are located outside of Illinois. Currently, the City of Chicago receives about $5 million in fire insurance fees, which are directly deposited into the city’s general fund. HB 5197 would transfer control of those funds to a newly-established Foreign Fire Insurance Board and require the City of Chicago to turn over fire insurance revenue to the board. “The legislation streamlines the flow of tax dollars and allows the Chicago fire fighters to determine how revenue intended for their own department is used,” said Cunningham, a Democrat representing parts of Chicago and the Southwest Suburbs. “The funding will now go directly to fire suppression instead of being spread throughout the city budget.” Advocates of the legislation say it will improve Chicago Firefighter’s safety and effectiveness through enhancements in their equipment and training. Under current law, the Chicago Fire Department is the only fire department in the state that does not have a fire insurance board. HB 5197 now heads to the House for approval.

Tour De Chicago Gives Home Buyers a Tour of Auburn Gresham’s Hidden Gem Continued from page 1 BY KATHERINE NEWMAN

he Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation is preparing to host the Tour De Chicago on June 9th. The event will take place from 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. and include brunch along with a tour of several historic homes along Winneconna Parkway, a hidden gem in Auburn Gresham, to encourage potential home buyers to consider purchasing in the community. The Greater Auburn-Gresham Development Corporation works to foster and promote the revitalization of the lowto-moderate income communities that it serves by using comprehensive community development strategies, according to their website. “The premise behind Tour De Chicago is really to assist in the stabilization of the Auburn Gresham community. We want potential home buyers to be aware of the fact that we do have hidden gems in our communities,” said Linda Johnson, business and project manager for the Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation. Winneconna Parkway is a historic area in Auburn Gresham that features a group of homes surrounding Auburn Park that overlook a lagoon. Some of the homes on Winneconna Parkway are new, some are restored victorian homes, and some are in need of rehabilitation. At the Tour De Chicago, attendees will be able to tour at least four homes along the Winneconna Parkway that are currently

occupied as well as get advice from mortgage lenders and learn about home buying assistance programs. The homes and the area that will be highlighted at the Tour De Chicago is part of the Micro Market Recovery Program (MMRP), a neighborhood stabilization initiative targeting small geographic areas that are experiencing higher-thannormal problems with foreclosures, according to the City of Chicago Department of Planning and Development. The MMRP target area in Auburn Gresham runs from 75th St. to 80th St. and Carpenter St. to Vincennes Ave., according to Johnson. “We would like to change the perception of our communities and we want people to know that these communities are stable. In order to entice people to come into these communities we are offering a $15,000 down payment assistance to homes that fall within the MMRP target area,” said Johnson. The Winneconna Parkway is within the MMRP target area. “I’m excited to see peoples jaws drop when they see this area,” said Johnson. “We have five homeowners that live in that area and they have opened their doors. Inside each of their homes, we will have mortgage lenders sitting and people can walk in and out of the homes that are occupied,” said Johnson. While the Auburn Gresham community has been selected for the MMRP program because it is experiencing higher foreclosure rates, Johnson says that it is still a stable community. “Chicago has pockets of beauty, yes there are pockets of crime, but there are pockets of beautiful homes and strong families so we want to show that off,” said Johnson. Senate Passes Budget that Prioritizes Diverse Communities SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Legislative

Black Caucus voted recently to approve a budget that prioritizes key issues within the black community. The Fiscal Year 2019 spending plan is a full-year, balanced bipartisan budget. It makes critical investments in K-12 and higher education, youth employment and afterschool programs and the Child Care Assistance Program. “It is extremely important that we maintain our commitment to education, find ways to rebuild our public universities and maintain services that are vital to our communities,” ILBC Chair Kimberly A. Lightford (D-Maywood) said. “The past three years were hard on our most vulnerable populations, and this budget is an effort by the rank-and-file lawmakers to put our state back on the right track on behalf of the people of Illinois.” Funding was also restored for youth employment and youth programs, including Teen REACH.

Senator Elgie R. Sims, Jr. (D-Chicago) is one of the budgeteers, and says he kept public safety in mind as he negotiated the budget. “Jobs and afterschool programs go hand in hand with violence prevention. Providing our young people with constructive activities and employment is crucial to keeping them focused on their futures, off the streets and most of all, alive,” said Sims. The Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP) is also a crucial service within low-income and minority communities. It helps working parents get the child care they need to stay employed. Money for CCAP has been restored and rates for home care and day care centers were increased. Sen. Toi Hutchinson (D-Chicago Heights) is also one of the chief budgeteers and the chairwoman of the Revenue Committee and sponsor of key CCAP legislation.

www.thechicagocitizen.com

“Three years ago, the program was nearly gutted by cuts made unilaterally by the Rauner administration. We’re glad this budget will help us recover from these drastic and draconian cuts. This funding will help revive this important program and rebuild trust between our child care providers and families,” said Hutchinson. The black community in Illinois continues to feel the effects of a three-year budget impasse. Chairwoman Lightford said she believes that this spending plan will help restore stability in areas adversely affected by the impasse. “Services in our communities were decimated by the budget impasse,” said Lightford. “We were finally able to get the bipartisan support we needed to try to reverse the damage and provide our constituents with the help they so desperately need.” The budget package now moves to the House for final approval before heading to the governor’s desk.

ather’s Day Celebration Incorporates Healthy Eating, Promotes Nutrition and Wellness Real Men Cook’s Father’s Day Celebration will continue its long tradition of serving healthy foods and promoting nutrition when it holds its annual event on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 17 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The signature celebration will be held at Hales Franciscan High School, 4930 S. Cottage. Satellite events will be held at Trinity United Church of Christ in Gary, Indiana. A Real Men Cook gala will also be held in the South Suburbs, hosted by Fathers and Blessings. This celebration will be held on Saturday, June 16. In making the announcement, Ayinde Cartman, executive director of Real Men Charities said this year’s celebration will mark the 29th anniversary of this iconic Father’s Day Celebration. He added each site is committed towards supporting Real Men Cook’s tradition of incorporating healthy foods into their food offerings. In addition to barbecue ribs, and chicken, and other tasty selections, salads, raw foods, grilled and roasted vegetables, fruits, baked fish and chicken will also be on the menu. Obari Cartman. PhD Psychology, and Real Men Charities, Inc.’s program manager, will provide programming and coordinate activities that align with the organization’s Men’s Wellness Sunday activities, which are offered from the Quarry Events Center from 11:00 – 1:30 each Sunday. During these weekly sessions, created by Dr. Cartman and Ayinde Cartman, both master drummers, there is a for-men-only space to talk, or drum in a space provided to create peace and reduce trauma. At the Real Men Cook Celebration at Hales, Dr. Cartman will bring his wellness message to a broader audience. He will also share his curriculum and the organization’s mission to build healthy families and communities, with a special focus on men and children. Yvette Moyo and Kofi Moyo, co-founders, added that the University of Chicago Medicine, a presenting sponsor, will host a Health and Wellness Zone where doctors and support staff will participate in serving. Their sponsorship is also in keeping with the mission that Real Men Charities promotes. Entrepreneur Ranoule “Flash” Tatum will promote prostate awareness as part of the health initiative. Tatum, a prostate cancer survivor, has held these informational forums since 1999. He credits the information with empowering men to be more prostate conscious and vigilant about their health. This vigilance translates into saving their lives. Moyo noted that many health crises that disproportionately affect African Americans can be addressed through healthy eating, exercise and minor lifestyle adjustments. With that as a mission, a select number of veteran event cooks will prepare healthy dishes that are good for maintaining heart health, preventing and managing diabetes, and addressing obesity. Ayinde Cartman said Real Men Cook is proud to continue to bring the wellness message to to fathers. “Healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle help save lives,” he said. ERIS Brewery & Cider House Turns to ELAN of Nortek Security & Control LLC for Total Control of its Cavernous 14,000 Square Foot Venue

W

hen two Chicago-based women purchased a massive former temple built in 1910 with the goal of turning it into Chicago’s first brewery and ciderhouse, they turned to local integration firm, Buchan Consulting, to design and install a control and automation system to manage the technology in the cavernous space. The ELAN® Entertainment and Control system Buchan recommended and installed is now providing seamless control over the climate, audio, video, lighting and security in the ERIS Brewery & Cider House. “With a venue this large, we had a lot of specific needs and requests that we had to address,” said Doug Buchan, Owner of Buchan Consulting. “The brewery and ciderhouse founders asked us to recommend a robust and easy-to-use automation system that would give them to access all of the building’s technology through a single interface. Without hesitation, we suggested that the brewery rely on ELAN to control the multi-room AV system, surveillance, lighting and HVAC.” The two-phase project recently completed its first phase, which consisted of a gut renovation of the basement and first floor of the brewery and restaurant. During phase one, Buchan’s team started with an ELAN gSC2 Controller, accessible through the ELAN app installed on dedicated Apple iPads, to control and automate the venue’s lighting, security, audio, video and HVAC. An ELAN 6x6 HDBaseT AV Matrix was also installed, to distribute audio and video throughout the main restaurant and bar floor. For power distribution, Buchan and his team added a Panamax® D10-PFP power strip to the equipment rack, for a convenient way to power a rack full of equipment. Control of the 14,000 square-foot main floor, brewery, cider/beer fermentation area and

office is now easy to manage for the owners and staff. Through the system, they’re now able to customize the climate, including both thermostats and ceiling fans, and adjust the audio and video needs of the separate areas, all with the swipe of a finger. The brewery’s owners sought to embrace

the industrial charm of the original building. To do this, they kept the original chandeliers, incorporating booths and tables made with reclaimed wood, and using repurposed radiators as railings for the new space. They were successfully able to transform the space so that the technology in no way takes away from the overall design, but helps to enhance it. “Through the ELAN system, we’re able to control and automate a unique and inviting environment that helps to fulfill our goal of making the ERIS Brewery & Cider House a gathering spot for the community. This system allows our staff to easily manipulate the everyday details of the space, all at the touch of a button,” said Michelle Foik, Owner

& Managing Partner of ERIS Brewery & Cider House. Another unique design element is the impressive Haiku fans, which were installed in the main dining space. The smart, WiFi connected fans, are controlled from the ELAN system, as are the Aprilaire® thermostats that run the building’s geothermal heating and cooling systems. Given the size of the space, security was another priority for the owners. To accommodate these needs, Buchan and his team installed five exterior cameras at the secondary entrances and two interior cameras at the main entrance, all of which are accessed and controlled through the ELAN system for easy triggering of building lights and push notifications when a security alarm is set off. “The security system that Buchan and his team installed is extremely comprehensive and instantly available to us through the ELAN app,” said Foik. “Having an extensive system gives me peace-of-mind when the brewery is shut down and closed at the end of each day.” According to Foik, “this system has been so easy to use. Our bartenders and managers can easily change the temperature, the channel on the TV, or crank up the volume at the bar, all through the ELAN app installed on the iPads we have throughout the space. Through this, owners can also remotely access the cameras and be notified of all happenings within the system, thanks to ELAN.” Phase two of the project will likely start in the summer of 2018 and will include the remodeling of the outdoor dining area, third floor event space and eventually rooftop dining. With the help of Buchan and their team of certified ELAN integrators, the technology involved in the expansion should be easy to deploy and even easier for the staff to use.

Mubadala-led Investor Group and Sony Reach Agreement for Sony to Acquire All of Mubadala’s Interest in EMI Music Publishing

M

ubadala Investment Company (“Mubadala”) and Sony Corporation (“Sony”) recently announced that they have signed a legally binding memorandum of understanding (“MOU”) for the sale of the Mubadala consortium’s approximately 60% equity interest in EMI Music Publishing to Sony Corporation of America, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony, based on an enterprise value of $4.75 billion. As a result of the transaction, Sony will indirectly own approximately 90% of the equity interest in EMI Music Publishing and it will become a consolidated subsidiary of Sony. The closing of the transaction is subject to certain closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. Kenichiro Yoshida, President and CEO, Sony Corporation said: “We are thrilled to bring EMI Music Publishing into the Sony family and maintain our number one position in the music publishing industry. I would also like to convey my gratitude to Mubadala, our equity partner in EMI Music Publishing, for sharing our longterm perspective on the potential success of music publishing and their support as we grew the business. The music business has enjoyed a resurgence over the past couple of years, driven largely by the rise of paid subscription-based streaming services. In the entertainment space, we are focusing on building a strong IP portfolio, and I believe this acquisition will be a particularly significant milestone for our long-term growth.” The original transaction and the investor consortium that partnered with Sony and the Michael Jackson Estate to acquire EMI Music Publishing from a whollyowned subsidiary of Citigroup Inc. were sourced and assembled by Mubadala Capital’s private equity business, which has controlled and managed EMI Music

Publishing on behalf of Mubadala and other third-party investors since 2012. Hani Barhoush, Head of Mubadala Capital, said: “EMI has been a successful investment for Mubadala and I would like to personally extend my appreciation to the leadership at Sony and Sony/ATV, who have been instrumental in administering the EMI catalog as well as shaping the music landscape on a global basis. They have been tremendous partners to us.” Adib Mattar, Head of Private Equity for Mubadala Capital and Chairman of EMI Music Publishing, said: “EMI Music Publishing represents one of the world’s largest and most diverse catalog of copyrights with iconic songs that span every decade over the last one hundred years. Writers and artists only stand to benefit under consolidated ownership and should feel proud to be part of the Sony family. The sale of our consortium’s interest in EMI Music Publishing represents a milestone for Mubadala and our private equity business.” While the final purchase price to be paid by Sony for all of Mubadala’s equity interest in EMI Music Publishing is subject to customary closing adjustments, the total cash consideration Sony expects to pay to consolidate EMI Music Publishing is approximately $2.3 billion. Sony will assume EMI Music Publishing’s existing gross indebtedness, which was approximately $1.359 billion as of March 31, 2018. Upon closing of the transaction, Sony expects to record in operating income a non-cash step-up gain of approximately 100 billion yen for the equity interest in EMI Music Publishing it currently owns. The step-up gain and the consolidation of EMI Music Publishing has not been included in Sony’s forecast of consolidated financial results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2019, and Sony is currently assessing the impact of

this step-up gain and the consolidation of EMI Music Publishing on its consolidated financial results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2019. Over the past six years, Mubadala and Sony have worked together as partners to create value alongside Sony/ATV Music Publishing (“Sony/ATV”), Sony’s music publishing arm, which has been administering the EMI Music Publishing catalog’s legacy of iconic writers and artists, reinvesting in existing writer relationships and growing the catalog by signing new writers on a 50/50 basis with Sony/ ATV. These actions, coupled with the global rise of streaming and paid streaming services, have led to an appreciation in value of the EMI Music Publishing catalog as millions of consumers have been provided access to innovative distribution channels to enjoy music like never before. EMI Music Publishing owns or administers over two million songs that include classics by Queen, Carole King and the Motown catalog along with contemporary songs from Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Drake, Sam Smith, Pink, Pharrell Williams, Calvin Harris, Fetty Wap, Hozier and Sia. Together with Sony’s 100%-owned music publishing company, Sony/ATV, and Sony’s 100%-owned music company, Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc., the Sony Group collectively owns more than 2.3 million copyrights, featuring the Beatles, contemporary superstars and the Leiber Stoller catalog. EMI Music Publishing generated revenue of $663 million, adjusted operating income of $181 million*, and adjusted EBITDA of $249 million* for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2018. *Adjusted to exclude certain non-recurring warrant expense and management incentive plan accruals.

FASHION Victoria’s Secret Hosts Villa Victoria

Judging a Book by Its Reviews, Not Looks: Brandon Frere Comments on the Changing Face of the Workplace

LOS ANGELES – Victoria’s

age, the overall appearance of the average worker is changing. Their faces will look younger each year, but their desire to prove themselves and do excellent work will be ever-present. Professional standards do need to be held, but what consists of a professional standard is changing with the generations. In a way, it is a bit of give and take between the older and newer generations. Brandon Frere, a successful entrepreneur and CEO of several companies, advises keeping in mind that as the times change it is important to judge an employee by performance and not appearance. Now, maintaining a dress code can help employees be in the right mindset to perform their best at work. But other appearance-based characteristics such as unnaturally dyed hair, piercings, and tattoos do not necessarily impede an employee’s ability to do work. Keeping in mind, though, how a consumer might perceive such appearances is still important. It’s a balancing act. “What is appropriate for one business may not be the same as another. A dealership will have different standards from, say, a typical office setting. It’s important to keep in mind what is best for your business, but that doesn’t also alienate current or potential employees,” says Frere. Different tactics can be used to maintain the balance of professionalism and an individual’s right to bodily autonomy. Allowing tattoos that can be covered when needed can be an easy halfway point. Piercings can be kept to only being gold or silver colored. There are many ways to accommodate a top-rated employee that has more than just academic decoration. Because in

the end, time will keep moving forward. And if a business is to be in that future, the leaders of said business have to keep in mind the changing times and changing future generations. “Judging a book by its cover is an age-old reminder of what to avoid. If the best candidate for a job has a full arm covered in tattoos, so be it. The best thing an employee can have is a professional attitude and the right mindset to get the job done,” says Frere. About Frere Enterprises Brandon Frere is an entrepreneur and businessman who lives in Sonoma County, California. He has designed and created multiple companies to meet the ever-demanding needs of businesses and consumers alike. His company website, www.FrereEnterprises.com, is used as a means to communicate many of the lessons, fundamentals, and information he has learned throughout his extensive business and personal endeavors, most recently in advocating on behalf of student loan borrowers nationwide. As experienced during his own student loan repayment, Mr. Frere found out how difficult it can be to work with federally contracted student loan servicers and the repayment programs designed to help borrowers. Through those efforts, he gained an insider’s look into the repayment process and the motivations behind the inflating student loan debt bubble. His knowledge of the confusing landscape of student loan repayment became a vital theme in his future endeavors, and he now uses those experiences to help guide others through the daunting process of applying for available federal repayment and loan forgiveness programs.

London-Based Wires Glasses Lands Investor LONDON – Eyewear startup Wires

Glasses recently announced its seed investment from True Ventures along with the launch of its new collection of modular eyewear. The company was established in 2017 by Londonbased designer Yair Neuman and under the creative direction of Lily Cole. Each pair of glasses from Wires’ 2018 collection are crafted with a foundational wire frame that pairs with seven different designs of lens rims in various shapes and colors. The lens rims are interchangeable and can be switched out easily so the wearer can change the look of their eyewear without having to buy a whole new pair. Alongside its modular innovation, the 2018 Wires collection features a frame with a first-of-itskind invisible hinge mechanism, enabling the frame to fold as a result of geometry, not screws. Conscious of the environmental impact of the traditional eyewear

industry, Wires’ co-founders, among them the model, actor and activist Lily Cole and socially conscious entrepreneur Kwame Ferreira, are committed to sustainable design and production. By 3D printing the lens rims and using extruded metal wires, the company reduces the amount of waste that is usually created during eyewear production where rims and frames are cut from larger sheets of material. Additionally, Wires Glasses are handmade by a family-run business in the Italian Dolomites, the heart of Italy’s eyewear industry which is renowned for its quality of production and craftsmanship. When in need of a pair of sunglasses while on vacation, Neuman created what became the Wires Glasses prototype. An inventor with a passion for sustainable design, he constructed himself a pair using materials he had on hand, including a single piece of wire. “Wires is inspired by both ancient African wire artistry

and technological advancements like 3D printing,” said Neuman. “It’s art and science combined.” With this round of funding, Wires will focus on its direct-to-consumer strategy, including building out its ecommerce site and selling its eyewear in exclusive boutiques in the U.S. and Europe. “Wires is creating one of the freshest things I’ve seen in eyewear in a very long time,” said Tony Conrad, partner at True Ventures. “The collection is unique, and the co-founding team has this incredible mix of experience in design, fashion and sustainability. We also like that Yair is focused on designing products that are in line with how the modern consumer thinks.” Wires Glasses come in unisex shapes ranging from the avant-garde to on-trend. Complete pairs retail at $380 (£270) while additional interchangeable lens rims retail for $70 (£50). They are available for www.thechicagocitizen.com

Lily Cole, co-founder of Wires and British, model, actor and entrepreneur; and Ash Stymest, the British model, wearing the 180° from Wires Glasses 2018 collection.

CALENDAR Chicago Summer Theatre Festival

T

he Chicago Park District recently announced the schedule for the 66th season of Theater on the Lake: The Chicago Summer Theater Festival. In keeping with Theater on the Lake’s tradition of producing plays lakeside, the Summer Festival will return to Theater on the Lake’s Fullerton Street building, located at 2401 N. Lake Shore Drive, for the first time since 2013. This summer, two neighborhood parks will also host the off-the Loop theater festival: South Shore Cultural Center and Hamlin Park. The season will run June 19 through August 31.Performances will be held Tuesdaythrough Friday at 7 p.m.and Thursdays at 2 p.m. “With support from the Mayor, the Chicago Park District is pleased to launch the 66th run of Theater on the Lake and to feature an incredible breadth of work as part of the first summer back to the lakeside venue,” said General Superintendent and CEO Michael P. Kelly. “Theater on the Lake’s upcoming season will showcase Chicago’s outstanding theater companies and offer audiences a one-of- a-kind cultural experience along the lakefront.” Playwright Isaac Gomez is also returning as this season’s artistic curator. After a successful 2017 Theater on the Lake run, the Chicago-based dramatist originally from El Paso, Texas/Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, will once again contribute his theatrical insights to make this inaugural year memorable for theatergoers. “In this one year, art was front and center in Chicago’s beloved storefront theater community,” said Artistic Curator Isaac Gomez. “It is somewhere amidst reflection of our past to gain a better understanding of where we are now and, perhaps more importantly, where we can go, that the inaugural season of Theater on the Lake in its return to the Lakefront lives.” Each year, the artistic curator has the opportunity to select productions they feel exemplify the best and most relevant of Chicago’s rich theater community. Curators present these works to the Theater on the Lake audience with the intention engaging an active discussion around their choices. This year, in addition to curating Theater on the Lake’s season, Gomez‘s prolific contributions to the theater community are currently spread across the city. His play, Ofrenda, written in collaboration with Chicago Park District company

in Residence, The Albany Park Theater Project, is currently running at Eugene Field Park. In addition, the public can look forward to the world premiere of his play La Ruta at Steppenwolf Theater Company this fall. This year will also feature the first-ever play commissioned by the Chicago Park District in collaboration with the Chicago Dramatists organization Felons and Familias. Sandra Delgado, the actress and playwright, will return to her childhood park to present her workshop production at Hamlin Park. “I look forward to sharing this story of a Chicago family with Theater on the Lake audiences,” said playwright Sandra Delgado. “Every day, I am getting more excited for the workshop production of Felons and Familias and seeing my vision come to life with actors and designers is always an overwhelmingly joyful experience.” In 2017, Theater on the Lake launched its New Play Commission titled Theater on the Lake: In the Works. The initiative was devised to support the development of a new theatrical work by a Chicago playwright. Actress and playwright Sandra Delgado was chosen to develop Felons and Familias, a new work in conjunction with resources from the Chicago Park District and with the support of Chicago Dramatists. The complete performance schedule can be accessed through the My Chi ParksTM mobile application, which is available to download on Apple and Android devices. Through this app, patrons can access to all 1,000+ Night Out in the Parks events on the go, helping them to plan a spontaneous night out. Season subscriptions and flex passes are available. Single performance tickets will be on sale starting June 1. For ticket and reservation information, call 312.742.7994 or visit www. chicagoparkdistrict.com/events/ theater-lake. Theater on the Lake: The Chicago Summer Theater Festival is presented as part of Mayor Emanuel’s Night Out in the Parks, a series of cultural events and activities at parks across the city. It is also a key component of the Chicago Cultural Plan, which was launched by Mayor Emanuel and DCASE in 2012 and is making investments in public art, music festivals, films, concerts, exhibitions and performances.

6 Home Décor Trends to Make a Style Tips to Keep Your Grill Clean Statement and Safe

(StatePoint) Is your home décor starting to feel a bit stale? Spruce up your interiors with some of the hottest home design trends for 2018 -- from customized cozy to natural textures to retro touches. Here are some stylish ways to incorporate new trends, from one of the nation’s most sought-after celebrity interior designers, Taniya Nayak. 1. Create an Oasis: Make your home a tropical escape all year long. Add floral or banana leaf accents to form a staycation-worthy “at-home paradise” no matter the temperature. Nayak suggests pairing pops of metallic gold with plush greens and crisp white to build a look that is sophisticated, yet fun and exotic. 2. Keep it Simple: In 2018, Nayak encourages DIYers to “go big or go home…in the simplest way imaginable.” An easy way to accomplish this is to paint your baseboards, trim or window mullions a dramatic contrasting color, like black against a white wall, for an effortless, yet powerful effect. And when it comes to achieving clean, sharp paint lines, one of Nayak’s vital, go-to tools is a premium painter’s tape, like FrogTape brand painter’s tape that delivers the sharpest paint lines possible. Treated with patented PaintBlock Technology, FrogTape is a fool-proof way to get professional-looking results and eliminate the need for touch-ups.

3. Incorporate Natural Touches: This trend is all about nature’s textures -- think wood grain, geodes or ocean waves. One way to incorporate this look is to combine earthy tones like browns, beiges and deep blues with vibrant neon colors to generate the effect of the northern lights around the home. 4. Get Back to the Future: Give what’s old a modern, futuristic update to achieve this trend. Try painting a vintage chair with a pop of color, like the Sherwin-Williams 2018 color of the year, Oceanside, a combination of rich blue with jewel-toned green. This creates an eye-catching masterpiece that seamlessly integrates into both retro and modern home décor. Introducing bright colors to antiques produces a beautiful new spin on a classic look. 5. Design it with Love: What’s “in” in home design this year? Creating warm and cozy spaces that are customized just for you.

STATEPOINT, Nothing beats barbecues, block parties and al fresco dining. For your family’s safety and for the sake of your grill, here are some pointers on keeping that grill well-maintained all season.

Visual Check Ensure your grill is still in good working order after the off-season by giving it a once-over. Remember to turn off the gas and tank valves before getting started. Check whether all of its components are intact, including gas hoses. Also, determine whether the tank is full. Keep in mind that many grills come with a warranty, and you may be able to replace worn out parts without needing to buy a brand-new grill entirely. Quick Clean-Up When it comes to the grates, experts recommend using tools that allow you to skip the brush and the elbow grease to save some time and energy. “Spray a concentrated multipurpose cleanser over your grill’s grates evenly, wait a few seconds to give the grease time to break down, then gently wipe the area down with a sponge,” says TV contractor, Jeff Devlin, who uses Mean Green on his grill. The spray, which was recently named by Real Simple Magazine as the Best Multipurpose Spray, is available at Walmart and other retailers. This is the true essence of DIY. Painting an accent wall in a pastel color, like lavender, will set a relaxed and comforting tone in the room. From there, add personal pieces like a soft woven blanket, a macramé wall hanging or ivory plates on a wall to transform any room to “your” room. 6. Embrace New England Prep: This style embraces the timeless combination of crisp white linens and navy blues, but what really gives a room an authentic New England vibe is the addition of camel-colored leather décor accents. Nayak recommends adding monogrammed pillows to a leather accent chair, or whitewashing your brick fireplace to create a look that never goes out of style. Visit FrogTape.com for more trend information and inspiration. Get started on your home projects now so you can enjoy your refreshed décor all year long.

Other Considerations A deep clean is important once or twice a season. However, after each use, you can keep debris and build-up from becoming a bigger problem with a quick spot clean. One important area you don’t want to neglect is the bottom of the grill, where ash and grease build-up is likely to occur. Scrape out this section regularly. You can better protect your grill from the elements and guard against rusting by covering it after each use. If possible, use the cover provided by the manufacturer, as its designed to best fit your grill. This season, take great care of your grill. With the right tools on hand, you can streamline your routine. PHOTO SOURCE: (c) maksymowicz/stock.Adobe.com

Are Your Home Furnishings Good for the Planet and Your Family? ( StatePoint) More consumers are interested in selecting products that are good for the planet and their families, than ever before. While many understand what organic food is, confusion still exists when it comes to home furnishings. Simply put, what you bring into your home directly impacts the health and welfare of your family in terms of exposure to chemicals of concern, indoor air quality and comfort. With the deluge of products claiming to be environmentally sustainable, it’s important to know what to look for when furnishing your home. Here are some considerations to bear in mind. • Does it contain harmful chemicals? While the EPA has phased out the use of some of the most potentially harmful chemicals, some chemical variations continue to be used in upholstery and fabrics. To get a sense of what’s good and what may be bad, consult resources like the U.S. EPA’s Chemicals of Concern List and the Living Future Institute’s Red List. Remember that while some degree of chemical treatment may be needed to make fabrics fire-retardant or stainrepellent, in many instances, green manufacturers employ minimal chemistry or have found natural solutions to achieve these results. • Am I considering all the options? Fortunately, top fabric and furniture manufacturers have developed more sustainable alternatives. For example, Milliken & Company recently launched Breathe by Milliken, an eco-elegant collection of fluorine-free performance fabrics available in both natural and recycled polyester fibers. Furniture retailers are offering sustainably-sourced, locally-made, and organic furniture and fabric options, while big box retailers like Target have developed sustainability scoring requirements on products to help educate and empower consumers.

• Where does it come from? A sofa made from natural materials may not be a truly green choice. Consider the supply chain, too. Are natural raw materials sustainably grown and harvested? Are they made by companies with reputations for environmental stewardship according to green manufacturing principles? • What’s it made of? Select natural fibers or materials like cotton or wood whenever possible. However, if you prefer man-made fibers, ask about items made from recycled or post-consumer materials. For example, Breathe by Milliken polyester fabrics are made from recycled plastic, and each sofa upholstered in this fabric diverts 90-150 plastic bottles from landfills. • How long will it last? Durability is sustainability. Whether wood, molded plastic or fabric, quality household items will remain in use, rather than in the landfill. • What happens when I’m done with it? Opt for materials that consist of recycled or reused materials and/or those that biodegrade or can be easily recycled. • Have green claims been validated? “Greenwashing,” or making untrue or inaccurate sustainability claims, is a pervasive problem across a range of industries. Opt for brands with third-party certifications. For example, products achieving GREENGUARD Gold certification have been screened to ensure they don’t contain any of the more than 10,000 chemicals commonly known to pollute the air we breathe. Earning this certification means these fabrics meet the world’s most rigorous chemical emission standards, improving indoor air quality and overall health. The Sustainable Furnishings Council is another excellent consumer resource. For more information on sustainable interiors, visit breathebymilliken.com. Your home is your refuge. Knowing the facts about what you choose to put into it can allow you to feel better -- literally and in terms of your environmental impact. www.thechicagocitizen.com

This Second Career Keeps You Rolling! (NAPS)-By 2020, one in t h r e e Americans will be over age 50. If you or someone you care a b o u t expects to be among them, there's something you may want to consider-and it's electric. An electric bike, that is. In fact, a whole shop full of them. Owning an electric bicycle store is an increasingly popular second or third career for many. There are several good reasons: 1. The electric bicycle industry is booming. It's expected to grow 60 percent worldwide by 2025. Pedego, the No. 1 electric bike company in the U.S., has helped more than 100 career want-to-be entrepreneurs open a store. 2. The bikes practically sell themselves. You just have to create an environment where it's fun and easy to buy. 3. Owning a Pedego store is both enjoyable and fulfilling. People who own a store say it's surprisingly good to see the smiles on customers' faces or hear how riding an electric bicycle has changed their lives by expanding their social circles, helping them get fit or ditching their cars for green transportation. 4. The stores are NOT franchises. They're independently owned and operated. You're the boss-but you're not alone. The company offers dealer support and services at no charge and there are no licensing or royalty fees. 5. Opening a Pedego store can be good for your health and happiness as well as your pocket. The store owners tend to be a fit bunch thanks to all the bicycling. Plus, it's a great way to meet people and

have fun. While some retirees find their worlds shrinking as work relationships trail off, electric bike dealers develop new friendships with the customers who join them for group rides. Learn More For further facts and figures, go to www.pedegoelectricbikes.com.
