Vacant Lot Beautification Pilot Program Launches On The South And West Sides Continued from page 1 BY KATHERINE NEWMAN
During a recent press conference, the Urban Growers Collective, Heartland Alliance’s READI Chicago Program, and the Mayor of Chicago, Lori Lightfoot, all came together to announce the launch of Grounds for Peace, a vacant lot beautification pilot program. Through Grounds for Peace, 50 city-owned vacant lots in North Lawndale, Woodlawn, and Englewood will be transformed through new landscaping. In addition to providing neighborhood beautification, the pilot program will offer skill-oriented job training and development experience for 50 READI Chicago employees who will be responsible for executing the landscaping and maintenance of these vacant lots on the south and west sides of Chicago, according to information provided by the Chicago Mayor’s Office. “Today, we’re bringing life and opportunities back into community spaces that have been left empty for decades,” said Mayor Lightfoot. “Transforming our vacant lots into beautiful,
open green spaces not only fosters safer streets and stronger communities but also contributes to a cleaner and healthier Chicago.” Heartland Alliance, an anti-poverty organization based in Chicago, created READI Chicago as a response to gun violence and through this program the organization provides therapy, jobs, and support services to men in Chicago who come from communities that have been highly impacted by gun violence. “The READI Chicago team is thrilled to be part of this exciting program, and we look forward to actively contributing to these beautification efforts to help make our neighborhoods safe and welcoming,” said Eddie Bocanegra, senior director of READI Chicago. “It’s experiences like this that engage READI Chicago participants in meaningful ways [which] will help make a positive impact in our communities.” The Urban Growers Collective is another partner on this project and they will be providing a lot of the agriculture and landscape training for this pilot program. Co-founder of Urban Grower Collective, Laurell Sims, said that being part of the Grounds for Peace project
is a “dream come true” for their organization. “We really wanted to expand into adult job training but we knew that was not necessarily our skill set. We love teaching people how to farm and we’re very good at it but we don’t have access to the therapeutic skills and the nitty gritty job training resources that a larger organization who specializes in that, like Heartland Alliance, would have. To be able to combine what Heartland Alliance is great at and what we’re great at and then bring that to the table for these men in need is really critical,” said Sims. Urban Growers Collective and Heartland Alliance have been working together for about a year and a half to create an agriculture job training program and Sims said she was thrilled when the City of Chicago approached them to expand the program and launch the Grounds for Peace pilot program. “We are taking 50 lots in three different neighborhoods and using them as a test case to see the impact this can have on [a] community,” said Sims. “We can’t grow food on these lots because of the soil quality so we want to grow something that’s really beautiful.”
Black & Abroad Recommits to “Go Back to Africa” Campaign in the Midst of Racist Rhetoric in the U.S. Black & Abroad, a multi-platform travel and lifestyle company dedicated to redefining world experiences for the modern Black traveler, is finding new meaning with their latest campaign “Go Back to Africa” (#GoBackToAfrica) in the midst of controversy over hate-fueled political speech in the U.S. The phrase “Go back to Africa” has a long, complicated history, and unfortunately, we’ve seen recently how rhetoric is still being used to incite negative and harmful views of a certain group of people. The goal of the “Go Back to Africa” campaign is to put a positive spin on an often negative and derogatory phrase, and strip the perceived power away from those who use the phrase to promote fear. Black & Abroad wants to encourage people to turn away from negative stereotypes by transforming them with positive imagery aimed to change the meaning into something beautiful. The campaign highlights the diversity and magnificence of Africa’s 54 countries by bringing photos posted by African-American travelers on social media to life, using a powerful AI platform designed as a counterpoint to the travel industry’s bias toward

Caucasian travelers. “We’re proud to be changing the conversation during a time of global unrest by showing more diverse pictures of this rich continent and debunking negative myths and stereotypes,” says Eric Martin, co-founder of Black & Abroad. “We encourage others to get involved and rethink how they’re influencing or reinforcing negative stereotypes instead of positive actions.”

At the heart of the project is an innovative digital platform designed to locate, quality control and gain permissions to use aspirational images of African-Americans traveling in Africa. The platform, fueled by Google Vision and crafted by FCB/SIX, is an AI-powered content marketing engine purpose-built for the travel and tourism industry. This campaign was so well-regarded that it recently took home a Cannes Lion
Grand Prix. “This campaign demonstrates that by being creative, we have the ability to effect change and turn something that’s often negative into something that’s beautiful and positive,” says Ian Mackenzie, chief creative officer of FCB/SIX. “We hope the rest of the world will join us in recognizing that language is powerful, and we all have the ability to effect positive change.”

City College Partners With Community Organization To Host Summer Job Training BY KATHERINE NEWMAN
Richard J. Daley College has partnered with the Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN) to host the Weekend Warriors program where young men can earn a basic certificate in industrial welding and nine college credits by attending classes Friday, Saturday, and Sunday during the summer. The Weekend Warriors program is part of IMAN’s Green ReEntry program which provides transitional housing, life skills education, and sustainable job training for citizens returning from incarceration and high-risk youth in Chicago, according to information provided by IMAN. “We worked with the IMAN organization to put together a creative schedule that would allow them to utilize our new advanced manufacturing facilities to provide welding training for a group of at-risk youth,” said David Girzadas, dean of the Advanced Manufacturing Program at Daley College. The students who are participating in the Weekend Warriors program take 12-weeks of classes at Daley College that include a college success class, an introduction to welding class, and an intermediate welding class. When they are finished with the summer program, they will have the option of continuing their education at Daley College if they choose. “We are here to serve the needs of the community, as well as our students and we have a great resource that we want to utilize in every way possible. When we had the opportunity to work with IMAN we thought it fit in perfectly with City College’s objectives to introduce students to college and get them started on reaching their goals and dreams and their potential,” said Girzadas. Aside from the college-level training, participants also receive career and job placement services, behavioral health therapy, individual case management, artistic programming, select weekend excursions, transportation support, meals, and weekly stipends, according to infor-

mation provided by City Colleges of Chicago. There are currently 12 students in the Weekend Warriors program and they are about halfway through the summer program. For the most part, the students are committing their entire weekend to take classes at Daley College with classes from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Saturday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. “IMAN has been a great partner and at first, they were very concerned about a lot of the details and support services and thinking through the schedule in addition to simply scheduling classes but we really work with them on all the details. We worked out transportation,
the times of the classes, pickup and drop off points, meals, books, and all the details that go along with being successful,” said Girzadas. “We worked out all those details ahead of time which I think made the long effort that the students put in over the course of the weekend worth it for them.”
Class Action Settlement Involving Kiip, Inc.’s Advertising Platform Announced A settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit involving claims that Kiip, Inc. (“Kiip”) violated the law by using its advertising platform to collect, intercept, or transmit consumers’ personal information through a software application without first getting permission from those consumers. The case is called Farag et al. v. Kiip, Inc., Case No. 2019 CH 01695 (Ill. Cir. Ct. Cook Cnty.). The proposed settlement is not an admission of wrongdoing by Kiip. Kiip strenuously denies any wrongdoing and the court has not decided who is right or wrong. Rather, the parties have reached a
compromise to end the lawsuit and avoid the uncertainties and costs associated with further litigation. Individuals are members of the settlement class if, between January 1, 2010 and June 13, 2019, they used a software application integrated with Kiip’s advertising platform. Members of this class may file a claim to request a share of the settlement funds. The proposed settlement provides for a fund totaling $1,000,000, which will be used to make payments to the class members with valid claims after first making deductions for notice and administration costs, incentive awards to the class representatives,
and attorneys’ fees for class counsel. If the court finally approves the settlement, each settlement class member who timely submits a valid claim form will be eligible to receive an equal payment from the Settlement Fund. The exact amount of each settlement class member’s payment is unknown at this time; the final amount of each payment will depend on the number of claims submitted and the amount available in the settlement fund after the deductions. To make a claim for a cash payment, class members must submit a completed claim form online at www.KiipSettlement.com by Sep-

tember 11, 2019. Alternatively, class members can exclude themselves from the settlement by September 11, 2019 if they do not want to be bound by it, but will not be able to receive a payment from the fund. Class members who file a claim or otherwise choose not to exclude themselves will release any claims they may have against Kiip, as more fully described in the Settlement Agreement, available at www.KiipSettlement.com. Class members may also object to the settlement by September 18, 2019. The detailed notice available on the website explains how to file a
claim, exclude oneself, or object. The Court will hold a Hearing on October 18, 2019 to consider whether to approve the settlement and a request by class counsel for attorneys’ fees of up to 40% of the Settlement Fund, plus their costs for their work in the case. The court will also consider incentive award payments in an amount up to $5,000 to the class representatives. Class members can appear at the hearing, but do not have to. Class members can also hire their own attorney, at their own expense, to appear or speak for them at the hearing. For more information, visit www.KiipSettlement.com.

A Comfy and Functional Closet Helpful tips from Fashion Consultant Christie Grays of I Am CHIC Your home should be your happy place. Whether it’s coming to that nice plug-in scent you love, your comfortable sofa, or all those carefully hand-picked throw pillows on your bed, you are happy to be home. It should give you solace and peace. Fingers crossed that this is true for you. Even if you don’t have your dream home yet, parts of your home should certainly give you comfort, one place being your closet. We go to our closet every day, and that’s typically when we are getting our day started. Wanting to start each day with positive vibes, let’s ensure we have a comfy and functional closet. You should not spend more than one (1) minute determining what you will wear each day...your clothes should speak (not literally, of course) to you. “Hi, wear me,” said an awesome shirt and pant combo. In order for your clothes to speak to you, they need to see you and you, them. Here are 5 steps to achieve this. #1 - Remove everything you don’t wear. #2 - Remove everything you can’t wear. #3 - Remove everything that is discolored or with stains. #4 - Remove everything that isn’t attire related...hair dryers, towels, weights, etc. #5 - Be thrilled with how much space you’ve regained!!! Now, what do you do with the items you removed? #1 - Sell online. I average $100+ a month in online sales of items I simply don’t want anymore. #2 - Sell online. I’m clearly a big fan of this. However, if you are 1 size, (just 1 size) away from getting back into a size, develop a strategy to get back into them, but keep them out of your closet until then. #3 – Recycle as a dust cloth. #4 - Find a better home within your home. #5 - Be thrilled to see your clothes!

Brutus and Butch hair products is giving back a portion of its natural and organic product sales to the LGBTQ and the at-risk youth community struggling with gender identity issues. “My years in the industry has compelled me to support the people in the LGBTQ community, who have made a major impact on my life,” said Brutus Butch founder Gwen Lonigro. “It’s a thank you and acknowledgement to their continuous contributions over the years and a vehicle for change. “After 30 years in the industry and now as a salon owner, I decided to create a unique hair care product line that I’m proud of and helps people have the strength to be unique individuals.” Frustrated with polymer-heavy commercial products she encountered – Lonigro was inspired by the pure essential oils used by her Indonesian parents. Brutus & Butch’s products were conceived and includes a Clean Shampoo, Clean Conditioner and Gembira Oil Elixir Vitae, which is the company’s best seller. All products are a formulation of green, vegan, natural and organic ingredients with no fillers. “You only need a small drop to have incredible results. The more you use, the better your hair looks. It
replenishes with essential nutrients. It’s light, doesn’t leave a residue, not oily and creates a better hair shaft, especially for people with aging or chemically damaged hair.” Brutus and Butch has two main goals – give clients gorgeous hair using products that are safe and make donations to the LGBTQ community on a local and national level. “I believe giving nourishes the soul. I really want to help create love, peace and tolerance for all, and hope my hair care line of products help to achieve this goal. My hair care products serve the LGBTQ community with the tag line, ‘because we are who we are’, says it all,” remarks Lonigro. Her line of products can also be used on your skin, face, arms or legs. So far, the company has loyal customers in England and across the U.S. For more information about Brutus & Butch, or to order products, please visit brutusandbutch.com.

HOME When Temperatures Get High, Keep Your Bills Low (StatePoint) Do higher temperatures have to mean higher energy bills? The answer is no. There are numerous ways to keep your home cool and bills low in summer. After a few months of disuse, it is vital to check that your air conditioning system is still working in an efficient and optimal manner. If you have a central air conditioning system, for peace of mind, you might want to have your system checked by an HVACR professional. In order to save, be sure to shop around for special deals, which are not difficult to find for seasonal preventive maintenance. Understand however, that the proficiency of HVACR technicians varies greatly. When searching for the right HVACR technician for your home, one way to make certain that the job will be done properly and effectively is by hiring a professional certified by North American Technician Excellence (NATE), the nation’s largest certification body for HVACR technicians. NATE-certified technicians are qualified to properly install and service equipment, which means maximum home comfort and energy savings. Once a technician has inspected your system for efficiency, there are a number of things you can do to keep energy bills low: • Clean your air filters. Check them every couple of weeks and change them at least twice in the season, or as directed by the manufacturer. • Don’t obstruct airflow around air conditioner units -- keep them clear of plants and debris. • Raise the thermostat about 5 degrees. Each degree you raise the thermostat will save you a percentage off your cooling energy bill. • Compare energy bills from last year. If your costs have significantly increased, simply contact a qualified HVACR technician -- he or she can help determine the source of the problem.
