45 CHICAGOLAND GIRLS RACED THEIR GOKARTS TO THE FINISH LINE

Inspired by ComEd EV Rally STEM Program

The Lilac Laser Team Blasted Their Way to Victory CHICAGO

– On Saturday, July 29, nine teams of young women put their pedals to the metal in ComEd’s second annual EV Rally. Young women from across Chicagoland applied and were selected to participate in this exciting opportunity to learn about electric vehicles (EVs), science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) principles and clean energy careers while connecting with female ComEd mentors. Each of the 45 students who raced will receive a $2,000 scholarship for completing the program.

After three heats of spirited racing and a tense final round, the Lilac Laser team took first place, holding the winners’ trophy up high. The team’s members were:

w Ariel Gray, rising junior at Hansberry College Prep

w Vivienne DeRosa, rising sophomore at John Hersey High School

w Elizabeth Meza, rising junior at Joliet Central High School

w Francis Woods, rising senior at Lane Tech College Prep High School

w Rachel Chen, rising senior at Metea Valley High School

After three heats of spirited racing and a tense final round, the Lilac Laser team took first place, holding the winners’ trophy up high.

“This exciting program is a fun way for teens to get out of the classroom and experience STEM in a hands-on environment surrounded by like-minded peers,” said Michelle Blaise, senior vice president of technical services at ComEd. “The clean energy transition is coming quickly, and ComEd is working to ensure that we have a diverse pipeline of talent ready to fill these new roles and support our evolving communities.”

The ComEd EV Rally is designed to prepare the next generation of the clean energy workforce, while simultaneously helping bridge the gender gap in STEM. Young women from Illinois, between the ages of 13 and 18, were eligible to apply for the program. The student teams worked with ComEd women mentors over four build days to assemble high-tech, electric go-karts while learning about a variety of career opportunities in STEM.

REPS. KELLY, KIM, CASTOR, AND JOYCE LEAD SHINE FOR AUTUMN ACT TO REDUCE STILLBIRTHS

WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Representatives Robin Kelly (IL-02), Young Kim (CA-40), Kathy Castor (FL-14), and Dave Joyce (OH-14) introduced the bipartisan Stillbirth Health Improvement and Education (SHINE) for Autumn Act.

This bipartisan bill aims to prevent stillbirth through enhanced data collection, research, education, and awareness by creating the first comprehensive, federal-state partnership to reduce stillbirth rates in the United States.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, stillbirth affects 1 in 170 pregnancies, with over 21,000 babies born still each year. In the United States, the annual number of stillbirths far exceeds the number of deaths among children aged 0-14 years from accidents, preterm birth, SIDS, drownings, fire, and flu combined.

The SHINE for Autumn Act is named in honor of Autumn Joy, who was born still on July 8, 2011. Her death tragically impacted her family and propelled her mother, Debbie, toward helping others through stillbirth advocacy. She has been working tirelessly to give Autumn’s short life a purpose, and to shed light on this heartbreaking public health crisis.

The SHINE for Autumn Act (H.R. 5487) passed the House with overwhelming bipartisan support in the 117th Congress.

Epic Academy Eyes Expansion

Continued from page 1

Epic Academy College Prep moved into the former site of Sullivan Elementary School in 2009. The plan includes renovating the existing building, constructing a four-story addition and replacing two residential properties.

LeeAndra Khan, Executive Director of Epic Academy College Prep, said the approval process was lengthy and included getting approval to change the school’s address, prove they engaged stakeholders and they had community support. Epic also had to make a case with the Chicago Public Schools, which authorizes the school’s charter, as to why it needed a new facility. From there, it went before the Board of Education who voted to approve the relocation of the school.

With the approval from the Board of Education, Epic was able to move forward on the schematic design of the new campus. EPIC hired JGMA as their architect and the design went through some iterations. The plan received full City Council approval on June 21st. The plan is to purchase everything except St. Michael’s Church.

“We wanted to make sure we continued to serve the population we serve and moving the school too far away from where we currently are, it wouldn’t honor the original purpose of putting a school in South Chicago to begin with,” Khan said.

Khan said as Epic added more classes and increased its population, the space became inadequate. The current location of Epic doesn’t have a gymnasium, library, a full-service cooking kitchen, and the cafeteria is in the basement, adjacent to the boiler room.

“It’s a beautiful building and it was well-maintained, but it was built in 1902 and it doesn’t have any of the amenities that any of the high schools have. While we’ve been doing really well

by our students with programming, there are some essential pieces of the school experience that we aren’t able to provide in the current building,” Khan said.

During the engagement process, Epic talked to students, parents and community members, as well as teachers and staff members about what they wanted at the schools. The goal is to make Epic a community impact institution.

The frame of St. Michael’s school will remain and be used for core learning spaces. The other spaces, the rectory and the other buildings will be demolished and a gymnasium, career center, media center, art studio, music room, physical education rooms, science labs and offices will be added.

The hope is with the new campus the students will be able to experience something beautiful. The gym will be on the top floor to give the students 360-degree views of the city. The roof will be green and there will be a community garden. Khan said the goal is to give the students at Epic everything students at schools in other parts of the city have.

The community will have access to the facility to have events. Epic is working with the community to create programs they can access. The hope is to move the students into the new school 2025-2026. Khan believes if everything goes well, it will take two years.

Khan has made a commitment that as many entities as possible that work on the project are Black, women and/or Latino-owned firms. The architect is Latino-owned, the project manager is a woman-owned firm, the real estate attorney is a Black woman-owned firm, the zoning attorney is a Blackowned firm and the general contractor will be a Black-owned firm.

“If we’re going to build a school in South Chicago, where the population is Black and Latino, the people who are building the school should represent the community,” Khan said.

Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs Launches Universal ‘First Steps’ College Savings Program

SPRINGFIELD – State Treasurer Michael Frerichs encourages new parents to open a Bright Start or Bright Directions college savings account and claim their $50 seed deposit from the new Illinois First Steps program.

“Illinois First Steps helps place families on a path to start planning early for their child’s education,” Frerichs said. “Saving now means money for the child’s future university, community college, trade school, or apprenticeship will be available when that child is ready to pursue additional education or training.”

To qualify for the $50 seed deposit, parents or legal guardians must be Illinois residents at the time of birth or adoption, the beneficiary child must be born or adopted after Jan. 1, 2023, open a 529 college savings account with Bright Start or Bright Directions, and a claim the seed deposit before the child’s 10th birthday.

Parents can easily open a Bright Start account at brightstart.com and submit a claim for the $50 First Steps seed deposit during the enrollment process. Parents who already have a Bright Start account for their eligible child can go to brightstart.com/first-steps/claim/ to submit a claim. Bright Start is accessible and affordable, with no minimum contribution, minimum balance, or annual fee. Parents who prefer to work with a financial advisor can claim their $50 deposit by visiting the Bright Directions website, https://brightdirections.com/ first-steps/. Additionally, Bright Start and Bright Directions offer tax benefits for Illinois taxpayers.

Treasurer Frerichs encourages families to open an Illinois 529 College Savings account. The $50 seed deposit is a great place to start, but it is only the beginning of a parent’s college savings journey. College costs have risen more than 134% during the past 20 years. Saving early gives parents more time to set aside money. A Washington University study found that having any amount of money put away in a dedicated college savings account increases the likelihood of a child pursuing education after high school.

Rachel Hermes of Chicago’s Portage Park neighborhood applied for the First Steps money while signing up for a Bright Start account for her son, Basil, who was born in March.

State lawmakers approved the college savings incentive in 2019. Last year, they set aside $2.5 million to start the program. The State Treasurer’s Office coined the name Illinois First Steps and has been carefully planning to launch the program this year.

The Treasurer’s Office is promoting First Steps by sending postcards and letters to Illinois parents who had a baby on or after January 1, 2023, educating financial advisors, going out to community events, and working with community-based organizations throughout the state.

Advocacy groups, which have been working on the college savings issue for years, praised the launch of First Steps.

Bright Start and Bright Directions are the State Treasurer’s Office’s highly rated 529 college savings programs. Money in a 529 college savings account can be used at eligible educational

CONSTELLATION PARTNERS WITH HIRE360 TO INCREASE DIVERSITY IN LOCAL TRADES THROUGH WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

CHICAGO — Constellation (Nasdaq: CEG), the largest producer of carbon-free energy in the U.S., is contributing $250,000 to HIRE360 as part of a program to increase employment and training opportunities in the building trades for women and people of color in the Chicago area. The partnership, an expansion of Constellation’s $1 million Powering Change workforce development initiative, will help HIRE360 launch a program to train people in historically underserved communities for family-sustaining union jobs in the building trades.

HIRE360 provides training programs, connects workers with mentors and offers direct support to help build stronger families and communities. Constellation’s support will help HIRE360 launch a new program this fall, designed

to foster economic equity by introducing Chicago area students to different trades and skills, and providing access to good-paying, long-term careers.

“Constellation is a catalyst for economic growth and progress in our communities, and providing equitable access to family sustaining jobs is a key part of that commitment,” said Joe Dominguez, president and CEO, Constellation. “Our investment will help eliminate employment barriers and provide training, reskilling and upskilling opportunities for underserved and underrepresented communities, creating a future talent pipeline for Constellation and others in our industry.”

HIRE360 is currently in the middle of major renovation work on a former warehouse at 2520 S. State Street in Chicago that will become a 40,000-squarefoot training and business development center. The campus will feature conference and meeting rooms, event space, and working areas for 37 trades.

“We are excited to partner with Constellation to increase opportunities in construction and the trades to those populations who are currently underrepresented,” said Jay Rowell, Executive Director, HIRE360. “Too many Chicagoans work multiple low-wage jobs and still struggle to make ends meet. With $100 billion in projects breaking ground in Chicago over the next 15 years, our hope is to give diverse candidates a better opportunity to be part of the city’s construction future.”

This program will provide meaningful career paths across the skilled trades for diverse populations, ensuring equitable access in underserved communities throughout the Chicago region.

A Fortune 200 company headquartered in Baltimore, Constellation Energy Corporation (Nasdaq: CEG) is the nation’s largest producer of clean, carbon-free energy and a leading supplier of energy products and services to businesses, homes, community aggregations and public sector customers across the continental United States, including three fourths of Fortune 100 companies. With annual output that is nearly 90% carbon-free, our hydro, wind and solar facilities paired with the nation’s largest nuclear fleet have the generating capacity to power the equivalent of 15 million homes, providing about 10% of the nation’s clean energy. We are further accelerating the nation’s transition to a carbon-free future by helping our customers reach their sustainability goals, setting our own ambitious goal of achieving 100% carbon-free generation by 2040, and by investing in promising emerging technologies to eliminate carbon emissions across all sectors of the economy. PRESTON CHAMPIONS LAW TO SUPPORT AUTISM AWARENESS EFFORTS ACROSSTHE STATE

State Senator Willie Preston’s plan to issue special Autism Awareness license plate decalswas signed into law by the governor.

“Having optimal options for Illinoisans to show their support of and raise awareness for autism awareness efforts is important,” said Preston (D-Chicago). “As a state we should prioritize raising funds for awareness, research and services. These plates will now contribute to that mission.”

Preston’s law allows the Illinois Department of Public Health to issue special autism awareness decals that are designed with input from autism advocacy organizations. The decal plate compliments an existing autism awareness license plate offered by the Illinois Secretary of State. Like the existing plate, a portion of proceeds from the decal purchase and renewal will go toward supporting the Autism Awareness Fund.

“The impact of autism awareness plates will greatly benefit early intervention efforts for children,” said Preston. “Moreover, these decals emphasize the support we have for each other in this state and speak to the value we see in comradery.”

House Bill 42 was signed into law on Friday.

NEW PETERS LAW INCREASES FINANCIAL PENALTIES FOR CIVIL RIGHTS VIOLATIONS

Financial penalties for civil rights violations will increase starting Jan. 1, 2024, thanks to a new law sponsored by State Senator Robert Peters.

“Civil rights violations are serious—especially if they are committed by a business that receives federal funding,” said Peters (D-Chicago). “The way we handle civil rights violations as a state plays a critical role in the message we are sending to Illinoisans, businesses and our neighboring states.”

Peters’ new law allows state claims for violations of federal civil rights laws to be heard in any court with jurisdiction. The new law allows Illinois courts to award no less than $4,000 in damages or other relief for violations, including damages for past, current, and future monetary losses, emotional pain, suffering, inconvenience, mental anguish, loss of enjoyment of life, and other non-monetary losses.

“By eliminating barriers preventing Illinois courts from intervening in these cases and increasing the financial penalties for civil rights violations, we are reinforcing Illinois’ commitment of being a welcoming state for people of all backgrounds,” said Peters. “We are a state that puts action behind our commitments. This new law is another example of that.” House Bill 2248 was signed into law Friday.

BELT MEASURE TO ADDRESS TEACHER SHORTAGE SIGNED INTO LAW

Illinois has faced a teacher shortage in recent years, which encouraged State Senator Christopher Belt to champion a new law to address this ongoing issue.

“As an advocate for quality education and the wellbeing of our students, I am always looking for ways to confront issues that negatively affect our state’s schools,” said Belt (D-Swansea). “We should be attracting educators to our schools, not pushing them away. They deserve more from us.”

The new law will provide retention bonuses of $4,000 per year, for two consecutive years to teachers who are National Board Certified and are employed in hard-to-staff schools. A hard-to-staff school is a public school that no less than 30% of the student enrollment is considered low-income. Becoming a National Board Certified teacher is a career continuum for those who start in pre-service teacher preparation, leading aspiring teachers to pursue and achieve National Board Certification.

The law aims to provide an incentive for teachers to work in underserved areas, as these are the areas that are most affected by the current teacher shortage.

“Teachers play an irreplaceable role in shaping the minds and futures of our children,” said Belt. “By prioritizing measures that attract, retain and support qualified teachers, we are investing in the success of our students and empowering educators while doing so.”

House Bill 3801 was signed Friday and takes effect Jan. 1, 2024.

Taking Your Small Business to the Next Level

After a long period of planning and hard work, you’ve finally turned your dream of starting a small business into reality.

As many business owners soon recognize, however, the launch is just the beginning of their entrepreneurship journey. Once you’re open for business, it’s time to start thinking about how to grow and scale your company for longer-term success.

Many small businesses are very young -- over half are less than 10 years old and nearly half of small businesses exit within the first five years. The smallest businesses have relatively diverse ownership, and the smaller the business, the more likely it is to be owned by a woman or minority.

Consider these steps to begin taking your small business to the next level:

• Secure additional financing. Future financing plans could include applying for more loans, grants or investor funding. It’s helpful to build a strong relationship with a bank you trust, which will play a critical role in supporting your small business’ growth, as well as connect you to other resources. For instance, JPMorgan Chase’s Special Purpose Credit Program helps expand credit access in majority Black, Hispanic and Latino communities for business owners who otherwise might not be approved or receive it on less favorable terms. Through the Global Supplier Diversity Grant Initiative qualified and certified diverse businesses have access

to affordable growth capital to cover costs including technology, cyber or networking remediation; operational control enhancements, among other costs.

• Streamline operations. Investing now in operations processes could pay off in the long run, such as using digital tools to simplify and automate processes like invoicing, approvals and payments. You can move money faster with real-time payments, which can improve your cash flow while minimizing the risk of fraud.

• Build your team. While many small businesses are solo operations, adding team members to manage

the workload can help make your business run more smoothly. If you already have an accountant or bookkeeper, build from there and add other employees who have the industry expertise to help put your business on the path for lasting success.

• Expand your network. You’ll need advisors, consultants and experts who have seen it all, or who know someone who has. Spend time identifying events, like trade shows and expos, informational sessions, and networking receptions with buyers and potential suppliers, as well as programs you may qualify for that offer additional support. Making these connections can also open your business to new customers. JPMorgan Chase offers a free one-on-one coaching program across 21 U.S. cities, featuring 45 trained Senior Business Consultants to mentor and coach small business owners so they can better run their business. Since 2020, the program has helped more than 2,800 minority owned businesses grow.

The operations and methods you used to get your business started may not be the same ones you need to scale it. Focusing on your future and investing in your facilities, teams and processes can get your organization oriented toward growth and help minimize business interruptions down the road.

Chicago Public Schools Prioritizes Transportation for Diverse Learners Amid Ongoing National Bus Driver Shortage

CHICAGO – Chicago Public Schools announced that it has confirmed school transportation to date for Diverse Learners and Students in Temporary Living Situations (STLS), and that these students will remain the priority this school year amid the ongoing nationwide bus driver shortage.

Moving forward, the District will process new requests on an ongoing, or rolling, basis, and continue to prioritize our Diverse Learners and Students in Temporary Living Situations (STLS).

General education students in selective enrollment or magnet programs will not have access to school bus transportation on the first day of school but free CTA cards will be available for those students.

CPS does not own or operate its own fleet of school buses but contracts with 13 school bus companies, including one additional school bus company and five alternative modes of transportation.

The following priorities and accommodations have been set for providing student transportation:

All Diverse Learners and Students in Temporary Living situations who are eligible for transportation and have opted in for student transportation by July 28, will have service on Aug. 21, the first day of school.

While the District works on the routing process, families of Diverse Learners and Students in Temporary Living Situations who have not yet been routed will receive $25 per school day, starting Aug. 21 and continuing until transportation services are provided.

Families with students who are enrolled and identified as Diverse Learners after July 28 can continue to choose the option of receiving an upto $500 monthly stipend if they do not want to opt into CPS transportation. Payment is issued monthly in arrears and payments are delivered by the U.S. Postal Service to schools.

For general education students eligible for transportation and in magnet or selective enrollment programs, CPS is providing FREE Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Ventra cards for eligible students and one parent or guardian who may need to accompany a student(s) on the CTA. In order to receive a Ventra card, families must submit a completed CPS form by Aug. 11. The CTA is free for all CPS students on the first day of school, Aug. 21.

Gov. Pritzker Signs Slate of Bills Expanding Supports for Active Military Members, Veterans, and Military Families

CHICAGO — Governor Pritzker signed five bills expanding protections for veterans, active-duty soldiers, and military dependents.

“The men and women of this state and this country who heed the call to serve deserve every possible support and protection during and after their time in the military,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “These bills weave together a more comprehensive safety net to protect and uplift veterans and service members dealing with the complexities of life in the military, including the many ways in which service can impact someone’s family and loved ones. To the service members recognized by our newly designed Honor and Remember flag, we thank you for your ultimate sacrifice and mourn with your families and the rest of the state.”

HB0925: House Bill 0925 creates the “Veteran Service Organization State Charter Act.” This act lays out specific requirements organizations must meet in order to be considered state-chartered veterans service organizations. This is a voluntary process that includes demonstrating that an organization must be formed by and for veterans with a majority of board members who are veterans, alongside other financial and legal qualifications.

HB3103: House Bill 3103 eases the process of obtaining a civil no contact order of protection for victims and survivors of military sexual assault. In 2022, Governor Pritzker signed into law SB257, ensuring military sexual assault victims were able to access the same rights and protections as their civilian counterparts. SB 257 allowed Military Protective Orders to be used as a basis for the issuing of criminal domestic violence orders of protection, stalking no contact orders, and gave local law enforcement the ability to enforce a military protective order. This act expands on those efforts to ensure victims and survivors of military sexual assault have access to all necessary resources for protection. The U.S. Department of Defense has cited Illinois’ work in this area as a model for national reform.

HB3295: House Bill 3295 requires the military liaison for the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) to notify service members’ spouses of federal assistance programs to reimburse licensing fees when they apply to transfer a professional license to Illinois. Under federal law, military spouses may be reimbursed up to $1,000 for obtaining a professional license required when moving to a new state for military relocation. This includes exam and registration fees. Governor Pritzker has previously prioritized aiding military spouses with relocation by creating a liaison to assist eligible members and their spouses, and by expediting certain applications for review. The licensing reimbursement will be paid by the branch of the military the individual serves in.

HB2856: House Bill 2856 amends the Vital Records Act by adding that the death certificate for an individual who has history of military service may include or be amended to include whether or not a military service-related injury contributed to the cause of death. Having such a classification can expand and expedite access to benefits for the spouse or dependents of the deceased.

SB1072: Senate Bill 1072 designated the Honor and Remember flag as the specific symbol to acknowledge American service men and women who lost their lives in the line of duty. The flag was created by the father of Cpl. George ‘Tony’ Lutz II who was killed in action while on patrol in Fallujah, Iraq. The bill creates a mandate on public entities that would then be required to purchase the flag, which cost $55 each. Twenty other states officially recognize this flag.

AMERICAN ACADEMY OF DERMATOLOGY: HOW TO CARE FOR AN INJURED NAIL

ROSEMONT, Ill., PRNewswire -- It’s easy to injure a nail by slamming a finger in a car door, wearing the wrong shoes, or getting a sports injury. While these common accidents can happen throughout our life, a board-certified dermatologist from the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) is providing tips to help you treat an injured nail at home, so you’re prepared if it happens.

1. “To prevent a nail injury, I tell my patients to keep their nails short, so they do not bend or catch on objects,” said Shari Lipner MD, PhD, FAAD, associate professor of clinical dermatology at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York. “Not only do short nails stay cleaner and break less often, they’re also good for your overall health because they are less likely to harbor dirt and bacteria, which can lead to an infection. It’s also important to make sure your shoes fit well and have a wide toe box to prevent rubbing. If you play sports, make sure to wear the proper gear to protect your nails.”

2. If you do get a nail injury, Dr. Lipner and the AAD recommend these tips:

3. Treat your wound. If any part of your nail is hanging off, gently trim away the part not connected to your skin. Then, gently clean the wound using soap and water. If the wound is bleeding, don’t put a dry bandage or gauze on top — once the bleeding stops, this will stick. Instead, apply petroleum jelly to keep your wound moist and then cover with gauze or a bandage. Repeat these steps every day while your wound heals.

4. Do not put sticky products on your nail. Make sure to only apply sticky products, such as an adhesive bandage or medical tape, to the skin around your nail on your finger or toe, so you don’t irritate the injury further. Wrapping your wound with an elastic bandage is another good option.

5. Get relief. Apply a cool, damp washcloth to your wound to reduce swelling. Prop the arm or leg with an injured nail on pillows so the nail is higher than your heart. This helps reduce swelling. Taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help relieve pain and reduce swelling when your nail injury is new.

6. Protect your nail while it heals. A nail injury can take several weeks to feel completely better. Even after your wound stops bleeding, keeping a light dressing on the nail, such as an adhesive bandage or a small piece of gauze, provides padding and protection.

7. “While nail injuries can be treated at home, some injuries may require you to be seen by a medical professional,” said Dr. Lipner. “If you can’t bend your finger or toe, if blood covers more than half your nail, if your nail is black or purple, or if your injury is particularly painful, see a board-certified dermatologist or get emergency medical care.”

8.These tips are demonstrated in “How to Care for an Injured Nail,” a video posted to the AAD website and YouTube channel. This video is part of the AAD’s “Your Dermatologist Knows” series, which offers tips people can use to properly care for their skin, hair, and nails.

9. To find a board-certified dermatologist in your area, visit aad.org/findaderm.

Dispelling Common Misconceptions About Hospice Care

(StatePoint) Hospice is intended to provide comfort and support to patients at the end of their life so that they can experience their remaining time in the best ways possible. Experts say that unfortunately, misconceptions about hospice often lead people to make uninformed decisions at a critical, complex juncture in their lives.

“There is often an idea that hospice equates to giving up. But hospice is actually about taking control,” says Paul Mastrapa, president and chief executive officer of Interim HealthCare Inc. “It’s the job of the hospice team to understand what a patient’s goals for end-of-life care are, and help them live that last trajectory of their life the way they want to.”

To help patients, their caregivers and family members, and those in the healthcare industry better understand the services and benefits hospice provides, Interim HealthCare is dispelling some of the most common misconceptions:

Myth: Hospice means giving up.

Fact: The primary goal of hospice is delivering comfort, support and specialized medical care to those ready to forgo curative treatment. Research has shown that a person who spends time on hospice has a greater quality of life at the end of their life. And while the goal is not to prolong life, there are statistics that show that hospice gives patients more time compared to patients who had the same disease trajectory and didn’t receive hospice.

Myth: Hospice is only appropriate for the last few days of life.

Fact: Hospice can actually last for months, and entering hospice sooner rather than later translates to fewer hospitalizations, better symptom relief and greater comfort.

Myth: You must give up all your medications.

Fact: While the hospice care team will make recommendations about which medications are still

beneficial to a patient at their stage of illness, patients and families get the final say.

Myth: Hospice is a place.

Fact: Hospice can entail in-patient care, but more typically, services are delivered wherever a patient calls home. The nurse, social worker, spiritual care provider, aide and other members of the hospice care team meet the patient where they are, be that in a residential home, an assisted living community or in another institutional setting.

Myth: Hospice is only for patients with specific diseases.

Fact: Anyone with a life-limiting chronic disease, from congestive heart failure to pulmonary disease

to Alzheimer’s, can choose hospice.

Myth: Hospice ends when the patient dies

Fact: Hospice providers often offer support to those who have lost a loved one. In the case of

Interim HealthCare, bereavement services are offered for 13 months.

Myth: Hospice work is draining.

Fact: When done right, hospice work can be extremely rewarding. Hospice care workers help patients and families find peace of mind, and reach a place of acceptance during a complicated and emotional time in their lives. Hospice workers believe in the mission of providing compassionate, patient-centric medical care and support to those at the end of their life, and they’re given a voice in the individualized care they provide.

The hospice market is the second-fastest growing healthcare segment nationwide, according to Bank of America research, which translates to a growing number of job opportunities. Hospice providers are currently recruiting candidates just starting out in their career and those looking to make a change. To learn more, visit careers.interimhealthcare.com. For more information about hospice care services for yourself or a family member, visit https://www.interimhealthcare.com/services/hospice/.

“Although people don’t always feel comfortable talking about end-of-life care, having these conversations can ensure one’s final days are peaceful and fulfilling,” says Mastrapa.
