Monitoring is to protect those who are at high risk for exposure before they get monkeypox and to decrease the spread,” Robinson said. “There is an ongoing investigation of cases for monkeypox.” Robinson wants people to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions when it comes to COVID-19 and Monkeypox. Dr. Candice Robinson is the Medical Director for the Maternal and Child Health Bureau at the Chicago Depart ment of Public Health. Robinson is a pediatrician by trade but has worked in the Public Health sector for 10 years.
In June, The Centers for Disease Control and Preven tion announced that children ages 6 months to 4 years old could receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Children ages 5-11 and 12 -17 will be allowed to get the vaccine. It means now all school-aged children are eligible to get the COVID-19 vaccine. Robbins recommends to parents, if they haven’t already done so, they should get their children vaccinated now.“The COVID-19 vaccine is the best way to protect them from getting COVID-19 and to protect them those serious potential consequences of getting COVID. Children can get seriously ill from COVID and children can have consequences from COVID, as well,” Robinson said. Children should be getting their required vaccines for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Whooping Cough. Parents should make sure their children also are up to date on their physical examinations and have the necessary forms completed.“ForCOVID-19, we continue to watch cases and follow the case counts. We continue to recommend vacci nation for COVID-19, so if you’re not vaccinated, go ahead and get vaccinated. Booster doses have been recommended for everybody who are five years of age and older,” said Robinson, who added that booster shots add another layer of protection against COVID-19. A second COVID-19 booster shot has been recom mended for people who are 50 or older, or those who are immunocompromised. Cases of the Monkeypox Virus are on the rise in Illinois and across the United States. In late June, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker declared Monkeypox a Public Health emergency in the State of Illinois. In early August, the Biden Admin istration declared Monkeypox a National Public Health emergency.Monkeypox cases thus far, has been found in adults, the median age is 35. The symptoms of the virus are a rash that starts to look like a pimple, as well as flu-like symptoms. If people have been exposed to a partner who has had monkey pox, they can go to vaccination clinics for those at high risk.

CHICAGO – On his 61st birthday, President Obama announced that the Water Garden at the Obama Presidential Center will be named in honor of his mother, Ann Dunham. The Water Garden, located near the Center’s north entrance, will serve as a designated place on campus meant for reflection and relaxation. The garden will be anchored by a commissioned art installation from world-renowned artist, Maya Lin. The sculpture, titled “Seeing Through the Universe,” will feature an upright “oculus” piece that mists and a flat “pebble” piece that fills with water and then cascades over. “When we thought about what may be a fit ting way to commemorate my mother’s influence on my sister and me, I thought about where she would want to be in this space,” said President Obama. “I could picture her sitting on one of the benches on a nice summer afternoon, smiling and watching a bunch of kids running through the fountain, and I thought that would capture who she was as well as just about anything else.” Maya Lin, one of President Obama’s favorite artists, is an Ohio native and Yale University graduate known for her ability to ground her work in nature. She has received distinguished recognition for her work, including her designs of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Wash ington D.C., and the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama. Lin creates art that invites visitors to engage with it and the surrounding environment. In 2016, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Obama, the Nation’s highest civilian honor. As we look for carbon-free energy sources to help combat climate change, nuclear energy stands out as an established technology that can and does provide consistent, clean energy to our nation. CHICAGO — Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot and the Chica go Department of Family & Support Services (DFSS) Com missioner Brandie Knazze have announced that $230,000 in Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) scholarships are now available for Chicago residents seeking to continue their edu cation. Residents have until midnight Friday, Aug. 26, to apply. The announcement coincides with the launch of a new online application portal. Built to simplify the application process and provide even greater access to students, individuals can now apply online at www.chicago.gov/fss/scholarship. “Our city is rife with opportunities for residents to reach their greatest potential, and we are committed to opening path ways to those opportunities,” said Mayor Lightfoot. “Finances are often a critical barrier to secondary education, and these scholarships will break down that barrier for our recipients. I’m pleased to give families a chance to focus on their educational and career growth and accomplishments with this funding.”
The project is supported by funds provided under the Com munity Services Block Grant Program administered by the Illi nois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. This is the second year in which the City has provided $230,000 in funds to support students, a marked increase from previous allotments of $100,000. Recipients can use their awards to attend post-secondary education at any accredited institution of higher education or vocational training in the State of Illinois for the 2022-2023 academic year. Funds can be applied toward tuition, uniforms, study-related fees, and books. Scholarship awards must be used for the 2022 fall semester/quarter. Analysis of last year’s recipients show attendance at both city and state institutions, including: Chicago State University Bradley University DePaul University Harold Washington College Kennedy King College Wilbur Wright College Lutheran School of Theology Moody Bible Institute North Park University Northern Illinois University Pacific College of Health and Science Resurrection University University of Illinois at Chicago University of Illinois at Urbana “In 2021, I was unemployed due to my employer going out of business. However, my daughter received $4,500 from the CSBG Scholarship,” said Louversia Gilbert, parent of a 2021 recipient. “That support prevented me from having to choose her tuition over our household needs.” Candidates must submit a complete scholarship application with all required documents and provide proof of residency and income eligibility, which can be found on the scholarship’s website. There is no age requirement. Applicants are also required to write an essay in response to one of five different prompt questions, primarily underscoring their needs and goals. The proposed 5.6-mile extension would include four new stations near 103rd Street, 111th Street, Michigan Avenue, and 130th Street. Multimodal connections at each station would include bus, bike, pedestrian, and park & ride facilities. The Final EIS includes the project’s purpose and need, a description of the alternatives considered, and evaluates the potential impacts and benefits of the project’s Preferred Alignment in comparison with the No Build Alternative. The combined Final EIS/ROD and Section 4(f) Evaluation was issued on August 12, 2022.
Owners are also encouraged to fill out a consent form offered on the Sheriff’s Office website that enables law enforcement agencies to more quickly obtain the cooperation of vehicle manufacturers to track stolen automobiles. Vehicle owners who have signed this consent form can also obtain stickers to display on their vehicles notifying would-be thieves that the vehicle can be tracked by investigators. These stickers are available at all Cook County courthouses. In addition to these measures, vehicle owners should remember to take precautions such as parking in a garage or in well-lit or high-traffic areas, if possible, to discourage thieves from targeting their automobiles.

CHICAGO – Illinois Humanities, in partnership with the Poetry Founda tion, Brooks Permissions, and the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, is proud to announce the winners of the 2022 Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Awards, an annual competition for Illinois poets in grades K–12. The 25 win ners and 12 honorable mentions were chosen from a record 445 submissions representing 70 schools from across the state. The winning poets will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 20, at a public ceremony at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts in Chicago. The ceremony will be hosted by Emily Lansana, and award winners will recite their poems as part of the ceremony. This year, Illinois Poet Laureate Angela Jackson will read a poem at the ceremony in honor of the winning students. CTA Red Line Extension Project Receives ‘Record of Decision’
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and the CTA, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), announce the publication of the combined Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)/Record of Decision (ROD) and Final Section 4(f) Evaluation for the RLE Project on Aug. 12. This significant milestone paves the way for the CTA to advance to the next steps of the federal New Starts funding program. The ROD is the conclusion of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) EIS process and is the official FTA decision document regarding the proj ect’s environmental impacts and mitigation. The ROD and the Final EIS, which are combined into a single document, include a list of mitigation commitments related to the impacts identified in the Final EIS. Public and agency engagement and feedback have been vital to the develop ment and refinement of the RLE Project since the publication of the Draft EIS in 2016 and the Supplemental EA in January 2022. Community input has been and will remain essential in helping shape this project and its path forward. The RLE Project will extend Chicago’s most-traveled rail line from the ex isting terminal at 95th Street to 130th Street. The 5.6-mile extension includes four new stations near 103rd Street, 111th Street, Michigan Avenue, and 130th Street. The project’s modern, efficient railcar storage yard and maintenance facility would benefit the entire Red Line. PASADENA, Calif., PRNewswire -- A unique testing method invented at the University of Birmingham is set for a global rollout after its commercial rights were licensed to the world’s largest COVID-19 test provider, Innova Medical Group – a California-based global health screen ing and diagnostics innovator and a world leader in the manufacture and distribution of COVID-19 rapid tests. The assay was invented and tested at the University of Bir mingham, which found its sensitivity to be equivalent to quan titative PCR testing. This new RTF-EXPAR testing platform is also being adapted for the detection of other viruses, meaning the tests can be quickly adapted to cover both new variants and new viruses. The technology’s new license holder, Innova Medical Group, is the world’s largest provider of lateral flow tests. The company is aiming to accelerate RTF-EXPAR’s global rollout for widespread use by 2023.
