NEWS briefly EDUCATION COLLABORATION SEEKS TO ELIMINATE BARRIERS FOR STUDENTS PURSUING GRADUATE DEGREES IN COMPUTER SCIENCE The Center for Minorities and People with Disabilities IT (CMD-IT) Future Leadership in Computing (FLIP) Alliance ensures that students without GRE scores have the opportunity to pursue graduate studies and contribute to inclusive innovation, paving the way toward greater diversity in academia. The Alliance serves to increase diversity in the professoriate in computing at research universities as a way to achieve greater diversity across the field. The CMD-IT FLIP Alliance includes the following institutions, which were found to be the largest producers of computer science faculty at research universities: Carnegie Mellon University, Cornell University, Georgia Tech, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University, Stanford University, University of California at Berkeley, University of Texas, University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign, and University of University. Most of these universities currently have an existing policy to ignore or forbid consideration of GRE scores in computer science Ph.D. admissions. For 2020-2021 admissions, some of the universities will make the GRE optional for Ph.D. admissions. Applicants should check each institution’s official website for details. NEW BOOK CALLS ON WORLD LEADERS TO UNITE IN RESPONSE TO HEALTH THREATS At the occasion of the World Health Summit 2020 and the 75th anniversary of the United Nations, a new book has been launched that calls on world leaders and politicians to unite in their response to the COVID-19 pandemic and other threats to health and the global economy. Health: A Political Choice – Act Now, Together is the latest in a series of titles published by the Global Governance Project in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO.) Dr Tedros, WHO Director-General, said: “It has never been clearer that health is a political and economic choice. In the past 20 years, countries have invested heavily in preparing for terrorist attacks, but relatively little in preparing for the attack of a virus – which, as the COVID-19 pandemic has proven, can be far more deadly, disruptive and costly.” The first book in the series Health: A Political Choice. Delivering Universal Health Coverage 2030 was launched in 2019.

TOP-TIER LAWYERS HONORED WITH 21ST ANNUAL JOHN PAUL STEVENS AWARD The Chicago Bar Association has selected five influential attorneys who stand out in their respective areas of practice as recipients of the association’s top legal award, bestowed to lawyers who demonstrate the highest commitment to integrity and public service. Named in honor of the legendary Supreme Court Justice and native Chicagoan John Paul Stevens, the awards were recently presented by The Chicago Bar Association and The Chicago Bar Foundation at the 21st Annual John Paul Stevens Celebration which was hosted virtually on October 28. This year’s recipients were Marisel Hernandez, Partner at Jacobs, Burns, Orlove & Hernandez and Chairwoman, Chicago Board of Election Commissioners; Jennifer Nijman, Founding Partner, Nijman Franzetti; Terry Murphy, Retired Executive Director, the Chicago Bar Association and Judge E. Kenneth Wright, Jr. The awards recognize lawyers and judges who best exemplify Justice Stevens’ commitment to integrity and public service in the practice of law. Stevens retired from the High Court in 2010 after 35 years of distinguished service and died in 2019.

Be the Miracle is an organization co-founded by Hassahn Liggins and Kristen Perteet. The mission of the organization is to rebuild communities and end the cycle of violence in the city of Chicago. Due to COVID-19, their annual Changing Seasons, Changing Lives fundraiser, will be a virtual event. It will take place on Saturday, Nov. 14. Liggins and Perteet started Be the Miracle when they decided to throw a party with a purpose and raise money to give to another organization that would help stop the violence. At first, they started giving money to Ceasefire and Father Pfleger, but wanted to have a bigger impact. Consequently, they formed a non-profit to give of their time and their resources. “We created this mission where we really wanted to empower the youth and our young people and for them to be able to pay it forward. So, whatever we teach them or whatever we instill in them, their promise to us is that we’ll help you reach your goals,” Liggins said who added that they wanted the young people to come back to their community in Chicago and instill those goals in their peers, and maybe people even younger. Jhaianne Cooper is a good example of how the organization is empowering youth and how those young people are

inspiring others. Cooper is the organization’s first Be the Miracle Scholar. A graduate of Chicago High School for the Arts, she attended Alabama State University and has started her own non-profit, Radiant Souls Community Service Organization. Liggins said they have grown since and awarded scholarships to other students. They have also expanded into more programs – financial literacy, community empowerment and mentorship. They are developing a new program, Be Empowered, for young women. “That’s kind of the premise of Be the Miracle, uplifting, empowering our young people to help stop the senseless violence in Chicago by giving them the tools they need to be great and in turn, they can be great for somebody else,” he said. Liggins said the organization thought about not hosting the event this year, but didn’t want to stop the momentum it had going. So, they decided to do a virtual experience. It will include highlights from the Man Up Program, entertainment and Jhaianne Cooper will speak. Also, a mixologist showing how to do a drink demon-

stration with Uncle Nearest, a Blackowned Whiskey company, will also be featured. The night will begin and end with DJ Emilio Buss. Liggins said it is extremely important for non-profit organizations to host fundraisers during this time, even if they are virtual events. “The fundraising is so important because that is the main component of how we get funds in order to create these programs, in order to give a scholarship to a Jhaianne, in order to give a scholarship to a Sebastian Ortiz, in order to fund Man Up,” he said. “The funds go a long way. It funds our programs. It helps us to do things off the cuff—like we still contribute to other organizations helping to stop the violence. So, if we see somebody doing something like what we’re doing and we’re aligned, we’ll definitely even donate to other non-profits because we know we can’t do it by ourselves.” For more information on Be the Miracle, visit bethe-miracle.org. Survey Reveals Staggering Level of Hair-Related Workplace Discrimination A new survey of over 500 women by All Things Hair has revealed the staggering extent of hair-related workplace discrimination in the US with 44.3% of women reporting that they had been discriminated against at work due to their hair. The survey also reveals that 46.5% of women have been told that their hairstyle is not professional. “We have an increasing awareness of the battles that women and men face when it comes to hair-related discrimination in the workplace. Our latest survey shows the uphill struggle that many continue to experience when it comes to the relationship between professional performance and personal appearance,” said Eunice Lucero-Lee, editor in chief and chief content officer of All Things Hair US. While the idea of a society in which individuals are rewarded in the workplace based purely on their talents is a nice one, it is clearly a long way from the reality of the current situation. Shockingly, the survey reveals that over half of women – 52.3% – feel pressured to wear their hair differently at work. When asked their views on what workplaces could do to address the situation, 68.2% of women felt that companies could educate their managers and employees more on diversity. 58.3% also felt that companies could showcase art and media from different cultures in the workplace in order to encourage greater diversity and inclusivity. Nor is it only employers who can take positive action to address hair-related discrimination in the workplace. All Things Hair’s survey showed that 64.6% of women would like to see haircare brands feature more campaigns showing a diverse range of black hairstyles. 56.5%, meanwhile, would like to see them produce more products for natural black hair.

According to a new survey, 44.3% of women report discrimination due to their hairstyles, 46.5% have been told their hairstyles are not professional and 52.3% of women feel pressured to wear their hair differently at work.

Member of King Family Dies The Reverend Doctor Toussaint King Hill, Jr. nephew of Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Sr., cousin to Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr., and recently retired senior pastor of the historic West Hunter Street Baptist Church of Atlanta, Georgia recently died following a long battle with cancer. Dr. Hill, a native of Detroit, Michigan, served as the Pastor of West Hunter Street Baptist

Church, formerly pastored by noted Civil Rights activist and best friend of Martin Luther King, Jr., Rev. Dr. Ralph David Abernathy. Dr. Hill pastored there from 2006 until his retirement last month. Dr. Hill also served as Pastor of Baptist Temple Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and as an Assistant Pastor at the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church. Dr. Hill is a 1981 graduate of

Morehouse College Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary of Evanston, Illinois with a Master of Divinity degree. He received his Doctor of Ministry degree from the United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio as a Cornell West, Jeremiah Wright, Molefi Asante Scholar. Dr. Hill was an armed forces veteran who served his coun-

try as a United States Air Force Chaplain. At the time of his retirement, Dr. Hill delivered a message about healing and forgiveness, “The Way You Do The Things You Do.” Dr. Hill is survived by his wife, Laurel Hord Hill, his two sons, Toussaint King Hill, III, (Miranda) and Thaddaeus Kornell Hill, and his granddaughter Eden Elizabeth Hill.

Black Women’s Health Imperative Releases National Health Policy Agenda The Black Women’s Health Imperative (BWHI) has released the second edition of its Black Women Vote: National Health Policy Agenda for 2020-2021. This agenda addresses the critical health policy issues that impact the health and well-being of Black women. It also supports partnerships with policymakers and other stakeholders to achieve health equity. The agenda has five pillars, themes that focus on issues within Access to Quality and Affordable Health Care; Equitable Responses to Public Health Emergencies; Sufficient Diversity in Clinical Trials and Health Care Delivery Systems; Increased Funding to Support Historically Black Colleges and Universities; and Social Justice. Under each pillar, is a thorough list of the most pressing health issues facing Black women today with concrete policy recommendations to help move toward permanent solutions. “This policy agenda serves to mobilize Black women, who have historically stood at the forefront of social movements, to advocate for ourselves and our communities. With it, BWHI aims to empower Black women with a blueprint for change and deliver a call to action for policymakers, practitioners, academics, and community leaders.” said Linda Goler Blount, BWHI president and CEO. COVID-19 has highlighted the racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic inequities experienced by communities of color. The pandemic has further entrenched the health inequalities faced by Black women. In response, the agenda’s COVID-19 section discusses how the pandemic has impacted the lives of Black women and explores policy solutions across a spectrum of issues – including reproductive health and justice, access to preventive services, meaningful participation in clinical research and the affordability of effective therapeutics. According to a news release, the agenda provides a roadmap for holding elected officials accountable for delivering on their commitment to health equity. It serves as a pathway for key decision-makers to take action on behalf of their constituents and it provides voters information to engage in substantive policy discussions and to seek meaningful solutions. Illinois Department of Insurance announces the start of ACA Marketplace Open Enrollment Illinoisans can shop for health insurance on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Health Insurance Marketplace. Open Enrollment began Sunday, November 1 and runs through December 15, 2020. The Illinois Department of Insurance (IDOI) recommends consumers begin their search at getcoveredillinois.gov to find accurate information to help compare health plans, get free enrollment help and even financial assistance (if they qualify). “This year Illinoisans have even more plans to choose from with 179 plans offered by eight

carriers,” said IDOI Director Robert Muriel. “We want consumers who need health insurance coverage to know that help is available. Last year, more than 240-thousand people in our state received premium tax credits to reduce their monthly premium payments.” GCI Executive Director Laura Pellikan said that according to last year’s enrollment numbers, once the tax credit was applied, the average monthly premium payment for Illinois consumers with an individual plan was about $153.00. “Any savings on monthly health insurance premiums is significant to families struggling to pay for

healthcare costs during the pandemic,” said Pellikan. “We recommend that Illinoisans visit getcoveredillinois.gov to find information about financial help and to see if they qualify.” https:// getcoveredillinois.gov/financialhelp On the ACA Marketplace, consumers can choose from among three different “metal” levels that represent a range of coverage and costs: Gold, Silver, and Bronze. NLRB Unveils Enhanced Public Website The National Labor Relations Board recently announced that the agency’s public website has been updated and enhanced. The updated website, according to a news release, includes several new features that will improve the user experience, make the website easier to navigate, and will enable enhanced engagement with the agency. These enhancements add website functionalities that make research easier, provide more information

Jay Cameron’s New Children’s Book Series Emphasizes Africa Travel Adventures Author, playwright, and philanthropist Jay Cameron introduces two books in a series about the amazing adventures of twins, Darren and Destiny, as they travelled to African diaspora destinations around the world. Cameron drew on his experience after his life-changing trip to Ghana to write seven children’s books about the beauty, culture, and history of several countries in Africa. Much of the information he was taught about Africa was inaccurate, negative and misleading, according to a press release and he was inspired to share his firsthand experiences with children. This series was written for ages six through ten, yet all ages can learn about the popular landmarks and the traditions of the people. In The Adventures of Darren and Destiny: Ghana, Darren, Destiny, and their parents take their first trip abroad to Accra, Ghana in Africa. They experience the amazing culture and history of the west African gem. While traveling to some of Ghana’s most popular landmarks, they meet Nana, Esi, Philip, and Isaac along the way. They ventured deep inside the cocoa forest and watched artisans make original African art. In The Adventures of Darren and Destiny: Tanzania, Darren and Destiny joined their parents for an amazing Serengeti safari adventure in Tanzania located in East Africa. They travelled with Godfrey, their tour guide. They

observed animals in their natural habitat, jumped with the Maasai tribe, and learned how to make fire. They also caught a birds-eyeview of the Serengeti on a spectacular balloon ride. The twins share a special birthday celebration they will not forget. The upcoming books in this series are Zanzibar: The Spice Island, Conquering Kilimanjaro: Journey to the Summit, Ethiopia: The Land of Origins, Salvador, Bahia: A Taste of Africa in Brazil, and Benin and Togo: Hidden Treasures.
