1 RESTAURATEUR AND ACTIVIST JOSEPHINE
WADE TO GET STREET NAMED IN HER HONOR Chicago- On Saturday, March 4, at 11:00 am, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Congressman Bobby Rush, Aldermen, and a host of business, community leaders and the family of Josephine Wade will participate in the designation of “Mother Josephine Wade Way “ on the corner of 79th & Vernon. For over fifty years, Josephine Wade has been a restaurateur, mortgage broker, civic leader and mother to all throughout the city of Chicago. The community leaders in the Chatham, Chesterfield and Park Manor communities lobbied city officials for the designation. “Mrs. Wade has been an icon “woman/business
activist” in the Park Manor community for more than a decade. Her community participation and involvement with Park Manor Neighbors has been phenomenal throughout the years and will continue into the future”, said Darlene Tribue, President, Park Manor Neighbors Community Council. Wade, who sits on a variety of corporate, community and faith-based Board of Directors, is also an active member of Tried Stone Baptist Church. Wade is the owner of “Josephine’s cooking “restaurant formally known as ‘Captain Hardtimes” located in the Chatham community for more than thirty years. “Josephine Wade
C-SPAN RELEASES THIRD PRESIDENTIAL HISTORIANS SURVEY By Christopher Shuttlesworth As the United States continues to move under the leadership of its 45th President Donald Trump, C-SPAN released the results of its third Historians Survey of Presidential Leadership, in which a cross-section of 91 presidential historians ranked the 43 former occupants of the White House on ten attributes of leadership. As a result, former President Abraham Lincoln ranked #1 for the third consecutive time with former Presidents “George Washington, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower,” completing the top five list of C-SPAN’s Presidential Historians Survey, according to C-SPAN.org. Dr. Edna Medford, who serves on C-SPAN’s Presidential Historians Survey Academic Advisory Team, noted that it’s rare that any other former President comes above #1 ranked Former President Abraham Lincoln and said it’s significant that C-SPAN continues to determine through the Presidential Historians Survey how former Presidents have fared over a period of time. “It’s important because it helps us get in touch with what our leaders have done,” Medford said. “What we see is that the more time that goes by, more peoples’ attitudes about those leaders change for good or bad.” Former President Barack Obama was selected and ranked #12 on the Presidential Historians Survey, according to C-SPAN.org. Medford said she believes Obama’s ranking in the survey shows how much America really valued him as President. While she acknowledged that Obama didn’t do everything right, Medford said she expects his ranking to go up during the next Historians Survey of Presidential Leadership. “It’s a very good start,” Medford said.
“What it means is that people already see the importance of his Presidency. [But], I would have ranked him a little higher within the top ten because I think his accomplishments were truly exceptional.” “The advisors used a one (“not effective”) to ten (“very effective”) scale to rate each president on ten qualities of presidential leadership: “Public Persuasion,” “Crisis Leadership,” “Economic Management,” “Moral Authority,” “International Relations,” “Administrative Skills,” “Relations with Congress,” “Vision/Setting An Agenda,” “Pursued Equal Justice for All,” and “Performance Within the Context of His Times,” according to C-SPAN.org. Medford said over 150 historians were invited to participate in the survey, but only 91 historians responded. “This is a very complicated survey that takes time to do in a thoughtful way,” she said. “So, the people who did this were people who were truly committed to having their voices heard and had some understanding of the Presidency.” “Participants were guaranteed that individual survey results remain confidential. Survey responses were tabulated by averaging all responses in a given category for each president. Each of the ten categories was given equal weighting in arriving at a President’s total score,” according to C-SPAN.org Medford said as much as she thinks Washington deserved to be in the top ten because he was the first President and the one to write the book on the Presidency, she still doesn’t know if she would’ve ranked him #2 and even Roosevelt at #3. “It doesn’t surprise me that people go up and down in the ranking,” Medford said. “Each generation interprets history according to its own interest so we [will] see this over and over again in these surveys.”
has been a pillar of stability and strength within our community”, said Rev. Dr. Marc Robertson, President, Chatham Avalon Park Community Council. In addition to the street renaming celebration, the community will celebrate Wade’s upcoming birthday on March 8. “Josephine Wade has been a tremendous mentor to many leaders in this city and a tireless advocate for economic development in the greater Chatham community”, said Eli Washington, Chairman, Chesterfield Community Council. The birthday celebration will begin promptly after the street dedication ceremony.
Obama Foundation Announces Exhibition Designers for Obama Presidential Center Chicago, IL – The Obama Foundation recently announced that it has selected an interdisciplinary exhibition design team for the museum that will be part of the Obama Presidential Center (OPC). The exhibition design team will be led by Ralph Appelbaum Associates (RAA) and will ultimately include several firms and individuals with expertise in media, lighting, and acoustics. Several Chicago-based creative collaborators will play important roles in the exhibition design process, including the firms Civic Projects LLC and Normal, and the artists and educators Amanda Williams, Andres Hernandez, and Norman Teague. Almost half of the exhibition design work for the OPC will be performed by minority- and woman-owned businesses. RAA has led the exhibition design efforts for many interactive and dynamic institutions, including the recently-opened and critically-acclaimed National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Rose Center for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Civic Projects LLC is dedicated to making community participation a core ingredient in design, most recently with the Bronzeville Retail Initiative and the in-progress Englewood Exchange in Chicago. Normal has produced award winning design projects for the Art Institute of Chicago, the Chicago Architecture Foundation, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Theaster Gates Studio, and University of Illinois at Chicago. A native of Chicago’s South Side, Amanda Williams is a visual artist and architect, well known for her series, Colore(ed) Theory. Andres Hernandez is an artist and educator committed to collaborative and community-based work, currently working on a range of projects with Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, and the University of Chicago’s Arts and Public Life initiative. Norman Teague is a Chicagobased designer and educator devoted to examining the complexity and history of communities.

DEFEATING CANCER AND THE POWER OF A POSITIVE THOUGHT By Christopher Shuttlesworth
O
varian cancer is the fifth leading cancer disease in total deaths for women in the United States, and is currently “accounting for more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system.” In fact, more than 22,000 U.S. women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2017 and ultimately 14,000 will eventually die from the disease, according to cancer.org. Dana Johnson has been through the struggles of living with cancer, but can also talk about how she’s survived it. If you ask her about her experience, she’ll tell you how a positive mental attitude is key. Johnson shared her story as an ovarian cancer survivor, an illness that continues to affect so many women across the globe. She said she overcame the disease through faith. In May 2017, it’s that same faith that will lead her to be able to plan and celebrate 5-years of being cancer-free. Johnson, who is a native New Yorker, said she was shocked to hear the news of her ovarian cancer diagnosis back in April 2012. She said after she got the news, she requested another doctorial opinion and it was determined that she had stage three ovarian cancer. “I wasn’t frightened,” Johnson said. “But I really had to wrap my head around the diagnosis and I was determined that the ovarian cancer wasn’t going to take me down,” she said. She explained she had surgery at the end of May, 2012 and began chemo for the next five months. “The chemo process was awful,” she stated. “It was almost unbearable. But I made it through because I was determined that this wasn’t going to take me down.” Johnson said she gained her positive mindset and strength through watching her mother who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 80-years-old, fight through it all, which ultimately helped Johnson through her own chemo therapy. “The hospital always gave me my favorite room which I loved because it was very nice and comfortable, Johnson said. “The nursing staff was always on point and I was very happy
Continued from page 1
every time I left.” She said her adhesions were rough, but combated the pain during the chemo process through acupuncture, visceral manipulation and by developing a memory to know when symptoms could erupt. Cancer also puts a drain on a patient’s finances. During the chemo process, over 30 percent of patients cut back on groceries or have to borrow money, according to a recent survey by CancerCare. Because of the illness, about 20 percent skipped payments on things like rent, utilities and their mortgage in order to pay for their medical bills, RealClear Health. comreports. Fortunately for Johnson, she didn’t have any
financial hardships at all. This was primarily due to her refusal to take any hard core drugs, she said. The advice she would give to cancer patients is to keep the faith, to keep positive people around you and to ask their doctor as many questions until they feel secure. “You can’t afford to have people around you that try to keep you on the down low,” Johnson said. “Two of my best friends and my son always had positive words. Even during the times I was in the hospital for the adhesions, I would tell the doctors ‘when you come in my room, you come in with a positive spirit and a smile on your face’. And that made me feel good.”

GENERATE CAPITAL FOR YOUR BUSINESS IN TODAY’S ECONOMY
1
5 Ways to Raise Capital and Start a Business Raising capital to start a new business is not as easy as setting up a lemonade stand or selling Girl Scout cookies. A primary reason for the failure of start-ups is a lack of funding. There are plenty of great products and ideas that have never come close to making it to the public. Without American entrepreneurship, and the drive to just go for it, we would not have Apple, Google, Facebook, Starbucks, or countless other companies that are a part of our everyday lives. Here are five ways to generate capital for your business in today’s economy:
Innovative Cancer Imager Earns Illinois Tech Professor Prestigious NSF CAREER Award Chicago – Illinois Tech Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering Kenneth Tichauer has been awarded a prestigious NSF CAREER Award in the amount of $568,245 to perfect a medical imager that could lead to earlier detection/diagnosis and targeted drug development for cancer patients. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 1.5 million new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed this year. Tichauer’s project, “Development of Enhanced Early Photon Tomography for Cancer Staging,” involves the ADEPT Cancer Imager, which will enable more accurate measures of the molecular environment of an individual’s cancer. Treatment strategies can then be tailored on a personalized level—a process known as personalized medicine. Tichauer and his ADEPT team are also the finalists of Illinois Tech’s Nayar Prize I, a $1 million prize package funded by the family foundation of an Illinois Tech alumnus. The team has built an imager prototype and has applied for a patent. Members are now collaborating with two cancer experts from the University of Chicago and Georgetown University on how to best bridge the gap between testing the ADEPT system and using it in hospitals. The NSF CAREER Award is one of the agency’s top honors given to junior faculty members. The award program supports faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education, and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations.
Generate capital for your business in today’s economy.
1
Friends and Family. A tried and true methodology, this has been a staple of start-up funding for hundreds of years. It is however, not without its risks, as a failed business could lead to strained relationships. or even the end of relationships.
2
SBA Express. The Small Business Association provides several avenues for borrowing money. SBA Express allows bankqualified business owners to borrow up to $150,000 without filing the typical SBA loan application. Plus, owners will receive a loan decision within 36 hours.
3
Community banks. Community banks actually have the capacity to be flexible with lending terms whereas large corporate banks do not. Find local lenders by reaching out to the Independent Bankers Association of America, which has access to 5,000 community banks.
4
Crowdfunding. Crowdfunding networks like Kickstarter and Indiegogo have raised some serious cash from individual investors. If you have an innovative idea or project, develop a reasonable
funding goal and timeline and see which investors support you and pledge funding. Remember, projects must meet their funding goals before the time runs out, or else no actual money is received. Also, be aware that a percentage of the money raised will be kept by the crowdfunding site as part of their fees.
5
DPOUSA. DPOUSA is an online financial platform providing client companies the opportunity to have 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year visibility of a direct public offering to a growing base of over 33,000 accredited investors and institutions representing over $500 billion in available capital. Unique to DPOUSA is the DPOUSA Special Council, a diverse cross-section of 50 professionals from various industries available to assist DPOUSA client companies. Visit www.DPOUSA. com for more information. Whatever the state of the economy, there will be those willing to invest in new businesses. New businesses create jobs, and power growth. There are sources to help with capital. So, once you find the sources, be ready with a great plan to show what you are going to do with the capital, and how the investor will benefit.
BLACKS RETURN TO THE LABOR MARKET AND FIND JOBS, BLS REPORT SAYS By Freddie Allen (Managing Editor, NNPA Newswire)
The Black unemployment rate continued to improve falling from 7.8 percent in December to 7.7 percent in January, according to the latest jobs report from the Labor Department. The labor force participation rate for Blacks, which is the share of workers who are employed or looking for jobs, increased from 61.8 percent in December to 62.4 percent in January. The employmentpopulation ratio (E-POP), the share of people who hold jobs compared to the total population, edged up from 57 percent in December to 57.5 percent last month. Compared to December, more Blacks entered the job market and found work in
January. The economy added 227,000 jobs in January. Retail trade, construction, and financial activities saw the greatest gains in jobs, the report said. Even though much of the data was collected before President Donald Trump took office, Trump Administration officials were quick to take credit for the solid jobs report. Economist Kate Bahn of the Center for American Progress, an independent nonpartisan policy institute dedicated to improving the lives of all Americans, said that the most recent jobs report was, “the final release of data that reflects how the labor market fared under President Barack Obama, with 227,000 jobs added—near the average for the past two years.”

CELEBRATING “HERSTORY” DURING
WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH
Entrepreneur, author and philanthropist,
HOLLY ROBINSON PEETE discusses juggling a multi-faceted life Continued from page 1 By N. Jayne Seward

eing glamorous and leading a ‘real’ life might seem like contradictory concepts, but it’s all a day in the life for actress Holly Robinson Peete. The multitalented actress, entrepreneur, author and philanthropist is currently shooting the second season of her family docu-series “For Peete’s Sake”with her husband, former NFL quarterback Rodney Peete, their four children and her mother, Dolores. The show gives a positive spin to reality TV by sharing their lives, everyday challenges and their journey with son RJ, who has autism. Being a mom, career woman and shooting a docu-series can be demanding, but Robinson Peete juggles her multi-faceted life in style. The actress recently launched a namesake clothing line, HRP by Holly Robinson Peete, exclusively available at EVINE Live. The collection, which she wears on her show, reflects her funky everyday “casual couture” look. In a photo shoot for the American Gem Trade Association (AGTA), Robinson Peete, who starred in the hit feature film “21 Jump Street,” and television series “Chicago Fire,” looked stunning in the spectacular jewelry designed by the 2016 Summer AGTA Spectrum Award™ winners. Robinson Peete wears simple jewelry such as gold and silver hoops as her “go to” daytime look, but glamorous jewelry and gemstones are very much a part of her lifestyle. “It’s funny because my line [HRP] is really about the casual mom, but listen, I’m on red carpets,” she said. “It’s really important to me to accessorize,” explained Robinson Peete who loves to dress up and wear dramatic gowns when she steps out in Hollywood. “When I step it up, I try to go all the way,” she said. “I’ve
been in this business for 30 years so I’ve seen all different types of jewelry and Diamonds, but what is so unique about the gemstones is that there’s a story behind everything and the colors are so bright and brilliant and different - and I get off on color,” said Robinson Peete. “When I did this photo shoot, every time they would hand me something else to put on, it was like each item gave you a certain feeling and put you in a certain mood. I loved them all.” During the shoot, Robinson Peete wore a spectacular platinum pendant featuring a 13.44mm golden South Sea cultured Pearl accented with Diamonds by Judy Evans, Oliver & Espig Gallery of Fine Arts, which won the “Best Use of Pearls” title at the AGTA Spectrum Awards™. The piece was complimented by other winning jewelry including Ricardo Basta, E. Eichberg, Inc.’s stunning “Honey” ring which features a Heliodor accented with Sapphires and Diamonds and won in the “Business/ Day Wear” category. “You know jewelry is spectacular when you want to plan an outfit around it,” said Peete. “Rarely do you build around jewelry, but these gemstones are so spectacular and so fun,” explained the actress who highlighted Citrines and Sapphires as two of her favorite stones. During the photo shoot, she wore a royal blue Caroline Herrera gown which was accented with jewelry from the AGTA Spectrum Awards™ “Evening Wear” category - a black Opal ring with Sapphires and Diamonds by Phillip Dismuke, Jewelsmith, Inc. that took second place honors and a stunning pendant by Robert Pelliccia, J.R. Dunn Jewelers featuring a boulder Opal accented with blue and pink Sapphires and Diamonds on a black Diamond bead necklace that captured third place in the category. While Robinson Peete has a wonderful family and many achievements, her life has

not been without challenges. When her father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, her world changed. “My dad [has] been gone for 14 years now, but his struggle with Parkinson’s led us to a life of service,” said Robinson Peete. Inspired to help those affected by Parkinson’s, she and Rodney founded the HollyRod Foundation in 1997. After their son, RJ, was diagnosed with autism they expanded the mission of HollyRod to also provide support and resources to families affected by autism. To help raise funds for the foundation, every year they hold events such as DesignCare - and fashion and entertainment are very much on the agenda.
While fashion is a highlight of DesignCare, HollyRod, most importantly, has been able to help many people thanks to the support of dedicated friends and sponsors. “We’re really blessed to have great partners,” said Robinson Peete. “One in 68 kids are affected by autism spectrum disorder. It’s on the rise and what happens is a lot of these children have no access to therapy services or any compassionate care and the same with Parkinson’s,” she said. “It’s really rewarding to give back.” she said. “We’ve been really blessed to be able to pay it forward.” For more information about DesignCare and the HollyRod Foundation visit www.hollyrod.org.

Commentary
The Immigration Enforcement Police State is Here by Thomas L. Knapp
February 7: Muhammad Ali, Jr., returning to the US from a speaking engagement in Jamaica, is detained for two hours at Florida’s Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and questioned about his name and religious beliefs. February 22: Passengers disembarking from a domestic (San Francisco to New York) flight at JFK airport are held up by US Customs and Border Protection agents demanding their IDs. February 24: Jeffrey Tucker of the Foundation for Economic Education clears the usual security checks at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport en route to Mexico. Then, while actually boarding the plane, he and the other passengers on the flight are stopped by US Marshals demanding that they submit to retinal scans. You’re probably thinking that this is the point where I’ll take a break to blame Donald Trump. It isn’t. It’s the point where I’ll take a break to remind Americans who’ve been voting for politicians who promise to “secure the border” and other such authoritarian nonsense that THIS is exactly what they’ve been voting for. When advocating for the libertarian position on immigration (“open borders,” which
also happens to have been the position Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush both took in the 1980 Republican presidential primary debates) I usually prefer to stick to the moral argument. That argument, put simply, is that where peaceful people move to, settle or work is nobody’s business but theirs. But there are practical arguments against America’s increasingly draconian immigration laws too. Enforcement is expensive but, fortunately, almost certain to be ineffectual (if it worked, severe economic downturn would be the result). The most important of the practical arguments, in my opinion, is that a police state built to persecute immigrants will necessarily persecute everyone else as well. I’ve spoken with friends who traveled in the old Soviet Union and eastern Europe before the Berlin Wall came down. They see near-complete similarity between those regimes and the operations of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Protection and Border Patrol forces. The difference between pre-reunification East Germany and the 100-mile wide “constitution-free zone” along the US-Mexico border is the flag the agencies in question salute.
Recent administrations have worked to expand that zone to cover the entire country and the Trump administration seems bent on finishing the job. The near-total police state blossoming before our eyes is the inevitable result of America’s 70year romance with the astoundingly stupid idea that it’s the government’s business to monitor and control who travels, lives and works where. America had legally open borders for its first century as a nation, and nearly so for half a century after that. It wasn’t until after World War Two that one even needed a passport to enter or leave the United States. Open borders worked. Freedom worked. The subsequent seven decades of attempts at rigorous immigration control have irrefutably established that our choice is not between open borders and closed borders, but between immigration freedom or totalitarian government. And Americans’ time to stop the stampede toward the latter is running short. Thomas L. Knapp (Twitter: @ thomaslknapp) is director and senior news analyst at the William Lloyd Garrison Center for Libertarian Advocacy Journalism (thegarrisoncenter.org). Sanders Congratulates New DNC Chair LOS ANGELES – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders congratulated Tom Perez on Saturday after Perez was elected Chair of the Democratic National Committee. In a released statement, Sanders said, he was looking forward to working with Perez, adding, “At a time when Republicans control the White House, the U.S. House, U.S. Senate and two-thirds of all statehouses, it is imperative that Tom understands that the sameold, same-old is not working and that we must open the doors of the party to working people and young people in a way that has never been done before. Now, more than ever, the Democratic Party must make it clear that it is prepared to stand up to the 1 percent and lead this country forward in the fight for social, racial, economic and environmental justice.”
