Business Owners Pledge To Support And Mentor Local Students This School Year Continued from page 1 BY KATHERINE NEWMAN

Local philanthropist and business owner, Early Walker, recently announced on Facebook that he was looking for a local student who needed a financial sponsor and mentor for the upcoming school year. After receiving an overwhelming response of nominations for children who could use this kind of support, Walker put out the call to other Chicago-area business owners and created the I Promise Back To School Challenge. The I Promise Back To School Challenge encourages community leaders and business owners to unite and embrace local children by providing them with school supplies, new shoes, a winter coat, help with registration fees, new uniforms, and anything else they might need throughout the school year. “The I Promise Challenge is pretty much an individual sponsoring a child and making sure that child is ready for his or her first day of school and the first week of school. Often-

times, the challenges that a lot of parents face in getting their child to school that first week, especially the first day, are because of financial reasons. I felt that if I could get enough people involved we could help with that particular issue,” said Walker. Since publicly releasing the I Promise Challenge, Walker said that he has had over 100 people take the pledge to support a child in need as they prepare for their first day of school this year. There are business owners, local politicians, clergy members, professional athletes, and community leaders who have all promised to sponsor a child this year, according to Walker. In addition to providing financial support to children in need, Walker is asking that all of the sponsors also commit to mentoring the student indefinitely, escort the child to school on their first day, participate in a career day for the student, and sponsor a school activity sometime during the year. “We have a violence epidemic right now and a lot of these kids need guidance and

mentorship. There are a lot of kids living in single-parent homes and some who don’t even have their biological parents and are living in foster homes. Just from being in the community and speaking of some of these kids, I’ve seen that they need guidance. They need some type of leadership and mentorship where they can pick the phone up and ask someone what they would do in a certain situation. That type of mentorship can go a long way with a child that doesn’t have any type of leadership,” said Walker. Originally, Walker was seeking children who had lost a parent to gun violence but since he has received such an abundance of sponsors who are willing to take the pledge to support a student this school year, he has opened up the nominations for both children who lack a parent due to tragedy and also all children who come from low-income and impoverished families. Young Non-Profit Founder Hosts Annual Back To School Bash In South Suburbs BY KATHERINE NEWMAN

You Matter 2 Inc., a local nonprofit serving south suburban youth, will soon be hosting its 4th annual Back To School Bash on July 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Izaak Walton Preserve, 1100 W. Ridge Rd., in Homewood. During the event, free school supplies will be given away and there will be food and games for families to enjoy. You Matter 2 Inc. was founded by Destiny Watson, a Homewood Flossmoor High School graduate, when she was just 16 years old. The mission of the organization is to inspire and empower youth to be world changers and the organization works with 7th to 12th grade students who are interested in changing the world. “You Matter 2 Inc. is a nonprofit organization that works with 7th through 12th grade students in the south suburban area of Chicago,” said Watson. “We work with these youth to get them involved in community service, learning about local and global issues, as well as allowing them to plan volunteer events for the community and educate the community.” The Back to School Bash is one of several community events that You Matter 2 Inc. hosts every year and it is open for kindergarten through 12th grade students. requirement has to be met to receive supplies and the organization is hoping to reach students throughout the entire south suburban area, according to Watson. Having graduated from Homewood Flossmoor High School, Watson realized that even though many suburban communities are seen as being well off, there are still a significant amount of people who struggle with meeting some of their basic needs. “I graduated from Homewood

Flossmoor and I’ve been in the district pretty much my whole life and I think there is a stereotype around suburban areas often being seen as being super wealthy,” said Watson. “I think we tend to forget the people that may not be as wealthy as the person next door and school supplies can be very expensive, especially for people who have multiple kids. We just want to do anything that we can to relieve the stress on families in our community.” The organization is still accept-

ing donations of school supplies which can be dropped off at the Flossmoor Community Church, 2218 Hutchison Rd., until July 26. The organization is also accepting monetary donations. Aside from the upcoming Back To School Bash, You Matter 2 Inc. is always accepting new student members who want to become world changers. Landmarks Illinois Announces Historic Preservation Grant Recipients for First Half of 2019 Landmarks Illinois, the only statewide nonprofit in Illinois dedicated to helping people save historic places, has awarded $35,250 in grant funding to historic preservation projects across the state. The nine individual grants were awarded through Landmarks Illinois Preservation Heritage Fund and the Barbara C. and Thomas E. Donnelley II Preservation Fund grant programs between January and June 2019. Individual grant amounts range from $950 to $6,000 each. Landmarks Illinois grants provide funding to nonprofit- and government agency-led preservation projects in Illinois communities. All grants are matching grants, which requires the recipient to raise funds equal or greater to the Landmarks Illinois grant amount.

A recent impact study revealed that, while relatively small, LI grants often serve as a catalyst for major transformation at Illinois historic sites. Every $1 a grant recipient receives from Landmarks Illinois is matched by more than $16 from other sources, according to the study. Below are eight Perseveration Heritage Fund grants LI awarded between January and June this year. You can read more about each recipient at www.landmarks.org l Bolingbrook Historic Preservation Commission, Bolingbrook: $950 for headstone restoration at the Boardman Cemetery, established in 1832. l Washington Historical Society, Washington: $2,500 for necessary repairs to the Greek Revival-style Dement House, built in 1858 and

set to become a historical museum. l Campton Township, Kane County: $5,000 for structural repairs to the historic, one-room

Whitney Schoolhouse that LI’s young and emerging professionals committee the Skyline Council is helping to restore. l Heritage Preservation Foundation, Beardstown: $4,400 for a new HVAC system at the 1872 Beardstown Grand Opera House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. l Beverly Unitarian Church, Chicago: $4,000 for structural repairs to the turrets at the Irish castle-like former Givens House, constructed in 1886 and located within Chicago’s Longwood Drive Historic District and the Ridge National Register Historic District. l Blue Island Historical Society, Blue Island: $4,000 for exterior restoration at the 1878 Albee House, which serves as the headquarters of the Blue Island Historical Society.

Landmarks Illinois also awarded one Donnelley Preservation Fund grant in the first half of 2019. l Save Piety Hill coalition, Rockford: $6,000 to hire a professional architectural historian to research and assess the eligibility for creating a historic district in Rockford’s Signal Hill neighborhood and other potential historic properties in Rockford. Breast cancer is the most imperative health issue Facing African American women BY RICKI FAIRLEY Vice President, Sisters Network, Inc.

Though Black women get breast cancer at a slightly lower incidence rate than white women, Black women are 42% more like to DIE of breast cancer than white women. That is an astounding number and indicative of a variety of factors, many reflecting racial disparities. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among black women, and an estimated 33,840 new cases are expected to be diagnosed in 2019. An estimated 6,540 deaths from breast cancer are expected to occur among black women in 2019. Women do not need to DIE from breast cancer. It can’t be prevented but early stage breast cancer (meaning it has been localized within the breast) has a 99% 5 year survival rate. Note the inequity here: the overall 5-year relative survival rate for breast cancer diagnosed is 81% for black women versus 91% for white women. And, 54% of breast cancers in black women are diagnosed at a local stage, compared to 64% in white women. To add more fuel to the fire, Black women under age 35 get breast cancer at two times the rate of white women and DIE from breast cancer three times as often as white women. So, what’s the problem? Why are Black women dying unnecessarily? Higher death rates among Black women reflect the following: 1. Black women are not taking action. While

Ricki Fairley, Vice President, Sisters Network, Inc.

92% of black women agree breast health is important, only 25% have recently discussed breast health with their family, friends, or colleagues. And, only 17% have taken steps to understand their risk for breast cancer. 2. Black women lack information about the severity of breast cancer, breast cancer symptoms and the need for screening. 3. Black women take care of others at the expense of their own health. 4. Black Women are often at a more advanced stage upon detection. 5. Black women may not have access to health care or health insurance so may have lower frequency of and longer intervals be-

tween mammograms. 6. Because they may not have health insurance, Black women may not follow up on abnormal mammogram results because they can’t afford the diagnostic testing. 7. Black women often don’t have access to the same prompt high quality treatment that white women have. They express that they are often feel disrespected by physicians and staff 8. Black women face logistical barriers to accessing care (such as transportation issues or not being able to miss work or arrange for child care). 9. Black women fear a cancer diagnosis. l Black women have the highest odds (2 times more likely) of getting Triple Negative Breast Cancer, a kind of breast cancer that often is aggressive and comes back after treatment. It has the highest mortality rate and is the only breast cancer sub-type that does not have a therapy to prevent recurrence. Note that younger women and women diagnosed at later stages are more likely to get Triple Negative Breast Cancer. We Must Stop The Silence! Early detection saves lives. Black women of all ages need to check their breasts monthly. We need to know what our “normal” feels like so if there is some abnormality, immediate action can be taken. Black women need to understand the severity of this health crisis. We need to be talking about our health, our family histories, and

www.thechicagocitizen.com

educating all of the women in our lives. The ongoing conversations in this country around access to affordable health insurance must include acknowledgement and action regarding the inequities for Black women. Black women need to demand the attention and care of health care professionals. We at Sisters Network, Inc., a sisterhood of survivors and thrivers, will continue to fight like girls and be the voice of Black women. We are committed to increasing local and national attention to the devasting impact that breast cancer has in the African American community. We are working diligently to reduce the mortality rate of breast cancer among Black women by generating awareness, garnering attention, providing access to information and resources, and supporting research efforts in the ecosystem. About Sisters Network® Inc. Sisters Network®Inc. founded in 1994 by Karen Eubanks Jackson, 25-year and threetime Breast Cancer Survivor. A Comfy and Functional Closet Helpful tips from Fashion Consultant Christie Grays of I Am CHIC Your home should be your happy place. Whether it’s coming to that nice plug-in scent you love, your comfortable sofa, or all those carefully hand-picked throw pillows on your bed, you are happy to be home. It should give you solace and peace. Fingers crossed that this is true for you. Even if you don’t have your dream home yet, parts of your home should certainly give you comfort, one place being your closet. We go to our closet every day, and that’s typically when we are getting our day started. Wanting to start each day with positive vibes, let’s ensure we have a comfy and functional closet. You should not spend more than one (1) minute determining what you will wear each day...your clothes should speak (not literally, of course) to you. “Hi, wear me,” said an awesome shirt and pant combo. In order for your clothes to speak to you, they need to see you and you, them. Here are 5 steps to achieve this. #1 - Remove everything you don’t wear. #2 - Remove everything you can’t wear. #3 - Remove everything that is discolored or with stains. #4 - Remove everything that isn’t attire related...hair dryers, towels, weights, etc. #5 - Be thrilled with how much space you’ve regained!!! Now, what do you do with the items you removed? #1 - Sell online. I average $100+ a month in online sales of items I simply don’t want anymore. #2 - Sell online. I’m clearly a big fan of this. However, if you are 1 size, (just 1 size) away from getting back into a size, develop a strategy to get back into them, but keep them out of your closet until then. #3 – Recycle as a dust cloth. #4 - Find a better home within your home. #5 - Be thrilled to see your clothes!

Brutus and Butch hair products is giving back a portion of its natural and organic product sales to the LGBTQ and the at-risk youth community struggling with gender identity issues. “My years in the industry has compelled me to support the people in the LGBTQ community, who have made a major impact on my life,” said Brutus Butch founder Gwen Lonigro. “It’s a thank you and acknowledgement to their continuous contributions over the years and a vehicle for change. “After 30 years in the industry and now as a salon owner, I decided to create a unique hair care product line that I’m proud of and helps people have the strength to be unique individuals.” Frustrated with polymer-heavy commercial products she encountered – Lonigro was inspired by the pure essential oils used by her Indonesian parents. Brutus & Butch’s products were conceived and includes a Clean Shampoo, Clean Conditioner and Gembira Oil Elixir Vitae, which is the company’s best seller. All products are a formulation of green, vegan, natural and organic ingredients with no fillers. “You only need a small drop to have incredible results. The more you use, the better your hair looks. It

replenishes with essential nutrients. It’s light, doesn’t leave a residue, not oily and creates a better hair shaft, especially for people with aging or chemically damaged hair.” Brutus and Butch has two main goals – give clients gorgeous hair using products that are safe and make donations to the LGBTQ community on a local and national level. “I believe giving nourishes the soul. I really want to help create love, peace and tolerance for all, and hope my hair care line of products help to achieve this goal. My hair care products serve the LGBTQ community with the tag line, ‘because we are who we are’, says it all,” remarks Lonigro. Her line of products can also be used on your skin, face, arms or legs. So far, the company has loyal customers in England and across the U.S. For more information about Brutus & Butch, or to order products, please visit brutusandbutch.com.

ETSF provides mentorship and scholarships to African-American male students impacted by Chicago’s gun violence. The foundation, named after Taylor’s father who was killed on Chicago’s Southside, is awarding 23 scholarships this year. The foundation has awarded more than 50 scholarships since 2017. “ My father was murdered just blocks from where First Lady Michelle Obama grew up,” says Taylor. “His life was tragically snatched by teenagers who lost their way. We must give these young people hope and opportunity, something to live for,” she adds. Taylor’s work in the community has caught national attention in a short period. Nationally syndicated journalist Roland S. Martin is serving as the gala’s honorary chairman. “When my friend and former CNN colleague told me she was launching this foundation, I was in full support,” says Martin.

“The need to provide a way forward for young black men who don’t have the resources to go to college is much needed. This type of support makes it possible to have stronger black families in the future,” he adds. Alderman Greg Mitchell and V103’s Crazy Howard McGee are also lending their efforts to the cause. “As a proud Grambling State University Alumnus, I am especially proud that several of the young men have chosen to attend HBCU’s such as Howard, Fisk, Morehouse, Clark Atlanta, Alabama A&M and Central State,” says Alderman Mitchell. “I have no doubt that each of these impressive and talented young men will achieve great success and one day mentor, empower and encourage those that follow in their footsteps.” Hoover Coney, Jr., a rising Junior at Chicago State University, will receive the scholarship for the third year in a row. “The Ezekiel Taylor Scholarship Foundation helps young black men like me to afford college. Award-winning and international children’s author Erica Pullen captivated fans with her first book Believing in Myself and has launched the release of her new book I am America’s Most Wanted. Pullen’s books connect children to their value and emboldens positive self-identity. Bev Smith, dubbed “The National radio and television Queen of Late-Night Talk” and host of The Bev Smith Show says, “This is a perfect time for a book confronting the issues faced by African American boys and men to come out and be released. Statistics show the most wanted man in America is the African American male. It is my hope that once this book gets into black homes, the issues of self-esteem dreams deferred and safety on the streets for black men and boys will change how they view themselves. Thank you, Erica, for being brave enough to want to tackle this issue in a way that we all can understand.” Believing in Myself enlightened the message for children to embrace their beauty from within and outside. Despite obstacles, Believing in Myself motivates and encourages little girls to be all they can be, regardless of their features or where they plan to go in life. I am America’s Most Wanted aligns with Believing in Myself for boys of color. “It is one of the 1st books for little boys and young men to flip the stereotype of “America’s Most Wanted” from a negative to a positive. I truly believe that my books help to build up the confidence, inspiration, and dreams of our young African American leaders to change and alter how they see themselves and drive change in a country ruled by stereotype and misperception. Considering all the negative factors and outside attacks that people of color face (like what the world witnessed as we watched “When They See Us” on Netflix), we have no choice

but to ensure that our young leaders grow to know that they are America’s Most Wanted and they should always Believe in Themselves,” Pullen said. Pullen uses every tool at her disposal to make her stories come alive and matter. Coupled with colorful and exuberant illustrations, she hopes that, through the magic of children’s books, children will be inspired in the most positive and powerful ways. Furthermore, society at large can glean from Believing in Myself and I am America’s Most Wanted the opportunity to embrace all children, oust negative stereotypes and instill hope and love for a better world. About the author Author, national public speaker, and entrepreneur Erica Pullen has a unique perspective into what it takes to build a successful career in self-publishing. She specializes in self-publishing tutorials, help guides, and consulting in an effort to educate any author on how they can self-publish. She’s been featured in numerous publications including VEU Magazine (Atlanta, GA) and Pittsburgh Tribune Review (Pittsburgh, PA). Pullen is a highly sought-after speaker at national conferences and schools. She was the former Chief of Staff for the Maryland Department of Social Services and holds a bachelor’s degree from Carlow University and master’s degree from the University of Phoenix. Pullen resides in Owings Millis, Maryland with her husband and children. In addition to W.E. Publishing Company LLC., she has additional business projects with Believing in Myself apparel and specialty parties.

HOME When Temperatures Get High, Keep Your Bills Low (StatePoint) Do higher temperatures have to mean higher energy bills? The answer is no. There are numerous ways to keep your home cool and bills low in summer. After a few months of disuse, it is vital to check that your air conditioning system is still working in an efficient and optimal manner. If you have a central air conditioning system, for peace of mind, you might want to have your system checked by an HVACR professional. In order to save, be sure to shop around for special deals, which are not difficult to find for seasonal preventive maintenance. Understand however, that the proficiency of HVACR technicians varies greatly. When searching for the right HVACR technician for your home, one way to make certain that the job will be done properly and effectively is by hiring a professional certified by North American Technician Excellence (NATE), the nation’s largest certification body for HVACR technicians. NATE-certified technicians are qualified to properly install and service equipment, which means maximum home comfort and energy savings. Once a technician has inspected your system for efficiency, there are a number of things you can do to keep energy bills low: • Clean your air filters. Check them every couple of weeks and change them at least twice in the season, or as directed by the manufacturer. • Don’t obstruct airflow around air conditioner units -- keep them clear of plants and debris. • Raise the thermostat about 5 degrees. Each degree you raise the thermostat will save you a percentage off your cooling energy bill. • Compare energy bills from last year. If your costs have significantly increased, simply contact a qualified HVACR technician -- he or she can help determine the source of the problem.
