WTTW TO PRODUCE LOCAL CONTENT AND EVENTS FOR ‘MUHAMMAD ALI’ WTTW and its sister classical music radio station WFMT will produce and present special local content in connection with the upcoming fourpart documentary series from Ken Burns, MUHAMMAD ALI, at 7 p.m. beginning on Sunday, Sept. 19 on all WTTW platforms. Parts two, three, and four of the series will air on successive nights at 8:00 pm. MUHAMMAD ALI was directed by Ken Burns and written and co-directed by Sarah Burns and David McMahon. The film follows the life of one of the most consequential men of the 20th century, a threetime heavyweight boxing champion who captivated billions of fans with his combination of speed, agility, power in the ring, his charm, wit and outspokenness outside of it. At the height of his fame, Ali challenged Americans’ racial prejudices, religious biases, and notions about what roles celebrities and athletes play in our society, and inspired people all over the world with his message of pride and self-affirmation. Ali was a Chicago South Side resident from roughly the mid-1960s through the late 1970s, a defining period in his life. Having converted to Islam in 1964, he claimed conscientious objector status in refusing to serve in Vietnam. Ali was immediately stripped of his title, banned from boxing, and convicted of draft evasion, a felony for which he could have served five years in prison. While his case was on appeal, Ali made the city of Chicago his home, and became more involved with the Nation of Islam and the civil rights movement, married, started a family, and eventually staged a comeback. WTTW will explore these watershed moments in Ali’s life with a companion website, wttw.com/ali. WFMT will publish an interview on Tuesday, Sept. 21, with Jahlil Beats, composer of the score for MUHAMMAD ALI, on wfmt.com. WFMT will also air a November 1975 Studs Terkel interview with Ali from the Studs Terkel Radio Archive.

Christopher M. Edwards founded Back on T.R.A.C. in 2013 to help his brothers and sisters in uniform. Edwards, a retired Marine who served for 14 years is also an educator. While in uniform, Edwards was exposed to a lot of community with his fellow Marines. If he had, they had and if they had, he had. That philosophy translates to a win for everyone. Whether it is a word of encouragement or utilizing resources, it is something the armed services community needs. T.R.A.C. stands for Teaching. Responsibility. Accountability. Confidence. The mission of the organization is to provide mentorship, education and housing to young adults and homeless women veterans through community partnerships. The HER Salute initiative’s mission is to reposition women veterans from homelessness to homeownership. The goal is to assist with suitable housing and provide wraparound services that create opportunities for the women to be self-sufficient. A lot of Edwards’

sisters in uniform face issues which include stability, and with kids it compounds the situation. Back on T.R.A.C. partners with other organizations to make the process of helping the women veterans transition smoother. “It’s one thing to have stable housing but because of the benefits we veterans do have, homeownership is a real thing if they do desire it and we’re there to motivate them and root them on to do the best they can,” Edwards said. Edwards discovered statistics that women veterans are more likely to experience homelessness and he was drawn to the issue earlier in the year. One of the reasons for this is because of past traumatic events and not being able to reposition themselves back into society. Edward sees three challenges that happens with veterans trying to re-enter society after active duty: Financial, structure and community. There are benefits service members receive and once they get out, those benefits aren’t readily available to them. The armed services is structured and focused on mission completion. Once service members are out, the focus is on free thinking,

which can be an issue for some. In active duty, members have access to other members and resources which creates a sense of community. Once they are out, they have to look for those resources. Edwards said service members are experiencing suicide, in addition to homelessness. For those experiencing depression, they can call 800-273-8255 and press 1. People on that line can provide assistance with no cost. On Thursday, Aug. 26, an annual event took place that helps veterans. It provided haircuts free of charge, clothing and food, as well as shots and other resources. There were more than 50 vendors that serviced 150 veterans. It was a way to show veterans there are resources available. “Help a veteran. If not us, look into doing some kind of philanthropic work. Devote your time. Even though the funding is wonderful, for a veteran to see someone out there that really cares who didn’t serve, that actually blesses our heart,” Edwards said. Sculptor Ed Dwight Will Design Statue of Xernona Clayton ATLANTA PRLog -- Xernona Clayton stands among the giants in both the media and civil rights arena. She is respected throughout the world, but Atlanta is her home. Sculptor Ed Dwight is preparing to create a memorial to Clayton that visitors to Georgia can admire and residents here can take pride in. Dwight is designing an 8 ft. Bronze Sculpture of Clayton that will be erected at Xernona Clayton Plaza. This honor will make Clayton the first Black woman to have a statue erected in downtown Atlanta, and she is the first Black woman to have a street named in her honor. “I have known Ms. Clayton for several years after being selected by her to receive the famous Trumpet Award, some years back. I approach this project with excitement and will use my creativity & experience to create a memorial worthy of her myriad accomplishments & powerful personality. Xernona Clayton is not only a gift to Atlanta, but a gift to the world. It is more than appropriate that she be properly memorialized & remembered for her work in the cause of racial progress & justice,” said Dwight. Creating the Bronze Statue was the idea of financial expert Rick Baker and journalist Mariela Romero, both of whom wanted to pay homage to Clayton. “Xernona Clayton’s actions during the civil rights era and afterward improved conditions for all people in this country. She is not only a woman of strength and character, but she also brings out courage and determination in others, and because of that, we want to honor her legacy with a monument. She is an eternal inspiration to us, and we want her to continue to inspire future generations as well,” the couple said. Xernona Clayton is the Founder, President and CEO of the Trumpet Awards Foundation, Inc. and Creator and Executive Producer of the Foundation’s Trumpet Awards. She was the first black person in the south to have her own television show, The Xernona Clayton Show. Felony prostitution charges, which have not existed in Illinois since 2013, will be expunged under a new law signed today, the result of legislation by State Senator Jacqueline Collins (DChicago). “The fact we have stopped charging prostitution as a felony means nothing to those whose records continue to be hurt by these charges,” said Collins (D-Chicago). “I want to thank Gov. Pritzker for signing this legislation and moving us beyond a dynamic that only serves to harm sex workers and perpetuate a dangerous, exploitative environment for them.” While prostitution has not been prosecuted as a felony in Illinois since 2013, those with such convictions are still subject to all the penalties that come with a felony record. Included in the law is another provision that also allows defendants whose convictions may cause consequences under federal immigration law to file for a post-conviction hearing. “Our justice system must operate on the premise that a defendant is well-informed of their rights and the consequences of their choices. There have been numerous cases in which those who plead guilty are unaware of how it may affect their immigration status, and are not well-informed by their defenders,” Collins said. “This is a step toward rectifying that.”

Senator Hunter’s bill will increase regulation in prescription monitoring program State Senator Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago), led a proposal to increase regulations for the prescription monitoring program is now law. “Primary doctors must be aware of any prescriptions being prescribed or filled for their patients in addition to what they prescribe to ensure any unnecessary prescriptions can be eliminated,” Hunter said. “Opioid overdose rates have risen in Illinois over the last year, and I want to take all necessary precautions so that patients are not over-prescribed but get the help that they need.” Senate Bill 1842 allows the Prescription Monitoring Program to send automatic reports to prescribers and dispensers when medication shopping is detected from five identifications of a prescriber or pharmacy in a six month period. The Illinois Controlled Substances Act currently allows the PMP to issue an unsolicited report to the prescriber, dispenser, or designee informing them of potential medication shopping when a person is identified as having three or more prescribers, pharmacies, or both that do not utilize a common electronic file. This law will allow an unsolicited report to be sent, and changes the limit on how many prescribers or pharmacies a person can have from three to five. It also aligns Illinois law with the current federal Department of Centers for Disease Control guidelines. “Doctors need to know what other medications their patients may be taking so none of the medications incite a deadly interaction,” Hunter said. “The right treatment is necessary for helping someone overcome addiction, and saving their life.” Senate Bill 1842 is effective immediately.

Welcoming Our Students (BPT) - The classroom environment changed tremendously throughout the pandemic, with many children studying at home full- or part-time. This meant additional gear for many, such as tablets and workbooks, while some items like backpacks went unused while studying remotely. As millions of students head back to the classroom for the start of the 2021/22 school year, backpacks will be a necessity again, and experts have some advice to ensure a safer start to the school year. "With a focus on getting back in the classroom and returning to 'normal,' it's easy to overlook possible injuries caused by everyday school supplies," said American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons spokesperson Emily Dodwell, MD, MPH, FAAOS, a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. "Backpacks might not seem that high on the list of safety hazards for children, but if too heavy or worn improperly, they can cause pain or injury to muscles and joints. Some potential problems could include wearing the backpack on only one shoulder, or a small child carrying heavy objects like a textbook, tablet or computer." As part of its "Prevent Injuries America™" campaign, the AAOS is spreading the word that backpacks that are too heavy or are worn incorrectly can cause numerous problems. Improperly used backpacks may injure or overuse muscles and joints. This can lead to back, neck and shoulder pain, as well as posture problems. This is especially concerning for students in hybrid learning environments because they may need to carry more items back and forth to school and home throughout the week. Tips for selecting and using school backpacks Shopping for a backpack is a fun part of preparing to go back to school, but many kids will prioritize fashion over function. Caregivers can help guide children to choose a backpack they like that also benefits their well-being. AAOS recommends backpacks that are lightweight with a waist or chest strap and two shoulder straps that are wide and padded. Rolling backpacks are a good option as well. If your child resists using a traditional two-strap backpack, a well-structured crossbody bag may be a reasonable compromise. After you have a well-designed, high-quality backpack, the next

The great thing about this is that teachers and parents can both get involved. A few ways you can stay up to date are reading blogs, educational articles, and looking for resources on social media. One learning resource to check out is 3M’s Science at Home video series. This online library of DIY science experiments uses common household items to help make STEM learning fun and accessible while showing kids they can connect science to just about anything. Teachers will also note that the step-by-step resources include national science teaching standards for easy lesson planning.
