How To Fringe

Welcome to the 2016 CHICAGO FRINGE FESTIVAL! Welcome to the seventh annual Chicago Fringe Festival. Jefferson Park is about to transform into an incubator for unforgettable creative expression, exploration, inspiration, and experimentation. And every person has a role to play. Whether you are an artist, volunteer, donor, or patron, we all come together for these two weeks to build an inclusive and adventurous community. Thank you for taking part! I have never been as grateful as I am this year to call this neighborhood our home. Without the support of the 45th Ward, we would not have considered hosting the United States Association of Fringe Festival conference last fall when we welcomed Fringe producers from cross the US to check out our great city and our great neighborhood. We never would’ve planned our first riotous spring fundraiser – Five Fifths of The Princess Bride – at Filament Theatre. And now this summer we have faced some of the biggest hurdles in our organization’s history, but with the tremendous help of our neighbors we are back and stronger than ever. The Chicago Fringe Festival really grew up this year and now with a Strategic Plan guiding us, we have a roadmap for the next four years and a vision for the Fringe at the end of that process – a stronger, more sustainable, and more robust Festival. We cannot wait! Right now though let’s focus on our 47 bold and brave performing groups who are going to fill our five venues with everything you could imagine and some things you probably could never imagine. And with that in mind, I encourage you to try something new. Come for one show and then stay for a second… and a third… and a fourth. Even a single day at Fringe truly can become the best kind of a whirlwind and I encourage you to take advantage and enjoy the ride. Fringefully yours, Anne Cauley, Executive Director

Get Lost In The Fringe I was sitting in the car with my friend Anne on a hot Chicago summer night. I told her I wanted to get more involved in Chicago’s arts landscape. Her eyes lit up. Later that week, she showed me world-class acrobats, a show about a gypsy being performed in someone’s apartment, and a one-person show that I still don’t fully understand. The Chicago Fringe Festival left me overwhelmed and overjoyed. It clicked: an entire two-week Festival devoted to showcasing un-juried talent from right here in Chicago and around the globe? Sign me up. I joined the Board and got to see the inner-workings of the Festival. What I saw thrilled me: the incredible dedication and joyful nature of the staff and volunteers. The outstanding artistry that fills our quirky venues. The engaged community of kick-ass patrons, community members, and supporters. And my love for Fringe has continued to unfold. A successful strategic planning process shows the next four years as ‘mighty bright’ for Fringe. Jeff Park remains a welcoming and wonderful home. Our community expands each year. To top it off, Fringe continues to give 100% of the ticket revenue right back to our performers (to date that’s $172,000). Alas, my career is taking me away from Chicago and this glorious Fringe. Before I go, I’d like to ask for One More Favor. Will you make a donation so that we can increase what we pay our talented and dedicated staff? I believe that Chicago deserves a well-run theater festival with artists from all over the world who might not otherwise have a chance to share their talents and stories. But in order to continue making that happen, we need your help. A Festival like ours is only as strong as the people who run it. And the people who run Fringe are otherworldly strong. Rally behind them and make a donation today at chicagofringe.org/donate If you like what we do at Fringe and want to become more involved, talk to Executive Director Anne Cauley or any of our Board members. They’ll be thrilled to fill you in on the various exciting opportunities – from volunteering to staff positions to board service. Your whole world could change for the better, just like mine did, from a simple conversation. On behalf of the entire Board and incoming President Bridget Hennessy, I welcome you to the Chicago Fringe Festival. I encourage you to take advantage of all that Fringe has to offer. We’re glad you’re here. Spreading sugar all around one last time, Justin Fyala, Board President Board President Letter
