Welcome to the 2017 Chicago Fringe Festival Your 2017 Fringe Adventure is about to begin! In these pages you will find information on 46 vastly different shows. Magic, mind reading, circus acts, music, dance, storytelling, and so much more. But don’t stop here. Fringe has a way of turning this vast metropolis into a small town. Start by chatting with the person sitting next to you in the theatre, catching a free show at Fringe Central, grabbing a bite at a delicious restaurant nearby. If you see someone wearing a button or a badge, I bet they will have recommendations to share.
The joy of an unjuried festival is that no one panel is deciding what you get to see. You get to decide. I met someone at a street fair recently who told me he didn’t like the performing arts. I bet him that we would find at least one show out of the 46 that would interest him. Lo and behold, we did. And so I challenge you. Find a show that really interests you and then select a few more that intrigue you. Take this opportunity to go on a journey. I continue to Fringe for just those moments. Those shows that surprise me. Those interactions with strangers who won’t be strangers by the end of the Fringe. For this pop-up community of adventurers who come together to learn, grow, laugh, think, and connect. Welcome to the eighth annual Chicago Fringe Festival. Thank you for taking part! Fringefully yours, Anne Cauley Executive Director Chicago Fringe Festival

Alderman Letter
From Our Board President
“You want to start a what?” “A Fringe Festival.” “Tell me more…”
My memory may be rocky, but I’m pretty sure this is how the conversation with Fringe founder Sarah Mikayla Brown started. It was a spring night. 2009. Lincoln Square. There may have been Greek food. There was definitely a play at Dank House involved. I’ll never forget when this acquaintance-from-New Orleans-turned-dear-friend-in-Chicago told me about her plans to start a Fringe Festival in Chicago. Not only did I have a lot to learn about what I now know to be an incredible theater experience, but also, I was in awe of a friend who would just, well, start a festival. Needless to say, I wanted in on this magic. And magic it is. I started out as a volunteer seven years ago and I was impressed by the dedicated staff. I couldn’t believe the variety of artists Fringe had to offer. And I was impressed that the Festival was up and running, manned by unpaid volunteers. A few years later, I joined the board, and I am thrilled to be finishing my first year as CFF’s board president. What an honor to work with such dedicated, talented, and kind souls. Recently, I was reminiscing with Sarah about Fringe’s early years. I said to her that she must be proud of what she created in Chicago. She reminded me that Fringe is – and always was – a team effort. If you’re a Fringe fanatic like me, you’ll know the original team – Amanda, Adrienne, Samay…then Anne and Vinnie…and, of course, Rachel. It’s this team and folks who have joined us over the years who make Fringe special. This team is THE REASON I ask you to consider making a donation to Fringe. Fringe Festival is run by volunteers. We return 100% of ticket sales to the artists. Our staff works 365 days a year (in addition to their own full-time jobs and artistic endeavors) to make Fringe happen. Please help support our team and the artists we host by donating online at chicagofringe.org, or at the end of the performance that you see. If you like what you see at the Festival or you are inspired by our team, talk to Executive Director Anne Cauley or me to get involved. You won’t be disappointed by this community. I have made life-long friends with Fringe and I am inspired over and over again by the extraordinary production that is THE Chicago Fringe Festival. On behalf of the Chicago Fringe Festival Board of Directors, we’re glad you’re here. Now – get out there, have some fun, and support Fringe. Cheers! A MESSAGE FROM THE CANADIAN ASSOCIATION OF FRINGE FESTIVALS On behalf of the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals (CAFF), welcome to the adventure that is Fringe. CAFF is comprised of 33 member festivals across North America with a mission to foster independent artistic exploration for artists and audiences alike. The Fringe is truly a feast for the artistically curious. This past November CAFF played host to the World Fringe Congress, which gave us a chance to show off our ‘Made in Canada’ model of Fringing. Over 53 international festivals participated and festival organizers marveled at CAFF’s accessible and inclusive model that returns 100% of the ticket price back to artists (minus taxes and fees). This year the Edinburgh Fringe celebrates its 70th anniversary and the global Fringe family celebrates with you! Thank you for supporting the wild and wonderful movement that is Fringe. I hope you have a wonderful festival. Kelly Straughan CAFF President
