r NEWS OF THE WEEK www.bajofondo.com
bajofondo to play in Chicago on Mar Even though Bajofondo has been a pioneer in what has been known all over the world as “electrotango,” do not mention the word in front of Gustavo Santaolalla — the group doesn’t consider it an accurate description of their music.
“We had done something similar in Mar Dulce (2007), but Presente is a much bigger project and the album required extra time spent in that area. We’re thrilled with the results.” Several album tracks also include brass, woodwinds, harp, percussion, and even a Theremin.
And yet, after all this commercial and critical success, after all the accolades, Bajofondo arrived to 2012 about to get even hotter: the signing by Sony Masterworks set the stage for their most ambitious and international album to date: Presente (March 5, 2013). The album is a major turning point for Bajofondo.
Even if the changes from Tango Club (2002) to Mar Dulce to Presente are evident, there’s also a Bajofondo aesthetic that remains a constant. Bajofondo’s music has no written laws; it evolves continually, but the parameters from the first album that were continued in Mar Dulce are amplified and expanded in Presente.
For the first time, Bajofondo used no vocal guests on an album, and the usual strings were magnified: again under the direction of Alejandro Terán, Presente features 11 violins, four violas, three cellos, and three stand-up basses.“This time we really worked on the orchestral parts,” said Santaolalla.
“After playing in virtually all corners of the world, having Sony Masterworks as our new home could not be more appropriate to present the album that most closely resembles what we are as a live band,” said Santaolalla. That album is Presente, to be released 11 years since Gustavo Santaolalla and Juan Campodónico conceived
“Presente” the latest release from Bajofondo available now on Sony Masterworks
rch 25th at Old Town School of Folk. the idea of bringing together a collective of Argentine and Uruguayan artists dedicated to creating “contemporary music of the Río de la Plata,” the river that separates — and unites — Argentina and Uruguay. Seven albums (two as Bajofondo, a collection of remixes, and five solo releases by Bajofondo members or guests) and multiple tours later, this collective of artists with remarkable individual careers evolved to become a true band known all over the world for its stirring live performances. As Bajofondo’s music constantly grows, evolves, and expands, the denomination of “electrotango” becomes more and more inadequate. In the last 11 years, Bajofondo has toured all over the world non-stop, performing at the biggest and most diverse World, rock, and electronica music festivals in the world: Coachella in USA, Roskilde in Denmark, Womad in England, Cactus Festival in Belgium, Pirineos Sur Festival in Spain, Pohoda in Slovakia, World Music Festival in South Korea, as well as China, Japan, and 15 countries
in the European Union. The band has toured the United States twice, playing venues like UCLA’s Royce Hall in Los Angeles and Lincoln Center in NY. Through the years, Bajofondo appeared multiple times in London, including packed shows at the prestigious Barbican Center and the legendary Roundhouse. In May 2009, Bajofondo opened the Argentine Bicentennial festivities at the Obelisco in Buenos Aires in front of 200,000 people (yes, you read well: 200,000). In the same year, their hit “Pa’ bailar” was used as theme song of a top-rated Brazilian soap opera, A Favorita (TV Globo), and in January 2010 the same song became the music for the Acura TV commercial shown during Super Bowl Sunday. The new album marks a new beginning for a well-oiled machine as relevant as ever. “Presente is our most complete album yet,” says Santaolalla. “It’s a sonic trip that takes you from the most magical to the most epic urban moments.”

NEXT COLLECTIVE COVER ART
The ensemble is comprised of saxophonists Logan Richardson and Walter Smith III, guitarist Matthew Stevens, keyboardists Gerald Clayton and Kris Bowers, bassist Ben Williams, drummer Jamire Williams, and special guest trumpeter Christian Scott (aka Christian aTunde Adjuah). NEXT Collective represents the new wave of highly skilled improvisers, melodists, and arrangers and who are closely connected as colleagues and as friends. The range and feel of the tunes on Cover Art speak both to the arranging talents of the members, and also to the diversity of their collective tastes. Hip-hop and punk-funk, singer-songwriter, guitar-pop, electro-R&B and alt-rock are all integrated and explored by these jazz innovators.
www.concordmusicgroup.com
Sr. Director of A&R for Concord Music Group Chris Dunn conceived, coordinated and produced this debut recording along with the members of NEXT Collective. Speaking to the album’s development, Dunn states, “It began as a way of introducing three new artists on Concord—Richardson, Smith, and Stevens — they are all great writers but doing a recording of their originals, when not using your own band members, and all three having very different styles as leaders is a tall order musically. It could make for a very disjointed experience no matter how great the playing. Instead I thought it would be cool to do a project of covers from their generation and make a super group of the same.”

PAUL HARDCASTLE VII
In the early 1980s, Hardcastle played the keyboards on several singles on the Oval record label by the dance music groups Direct Drive and First Light, before going solo. He achieved some acclaim for his early singles, notably in 1984, the electro-funk/freestyle/instrumental track, “Rain Forest”, which along with the track, “Sound Chaser” hit number two on the dance chart.[2] “Rain Forest” also hit number five on the soul chart and number fifty-seven on the Hot 100.[3] In 1985, he came to greater prominence with the international hit “19”, a song about America’s involvement in the Vietnam War and the effect it had on the soldiers who served, using sampled dialogue from an American television documentary about the posttraumatic stress disorder suffered by veterans. Hardcastle enjoyed several further hits in the UK, including “Don’t Waste My Time” (with vocals by Carol Kenyon) (UK No. 8) and “The Wizard”, a UK No. 15 hit that became the theme tune for BBC Television’s music chart show Top of the Pops from April 1986 until September 1991. He also had a hit with “Just For Money”, which reached No. 19 in the UK and featured Bob Hoskins and Laurence Olivier. Earlier, he had cut a cover version of D-Train’s most influential hit “You’re the One For Me”, segued with his own compositions “Daybreak” and “A.M.” Hardcastle also wrote the theme tune for Saturday Live, a popular entertainment show which ran from 1985-1987. He also made the hit single “The Voyager”, which was used for the BBC One programme Holiday. Paul now acknowledges he was behind the “N-N-Nineteen Not Out” track with Rory Bremner. After 1986, Hardcastle started to specialise in television soundtracks and remixed work, for artists as such as Five Star, Barry White, Third World, Sinitta, Johnny Logan, Hiroshima and Ian Dury. In 1988, Hardcastle released the concept album, No Winners, which focuses on the potential negative effects of the Cold War arms race. In 2000, he released Hardcastle III, which included a remake of “Rainforest” and a hit single, “Desire.” Hardcastle has also recorded several synth jazz albums, alternating releases under the artist names Kiss The Sky (with Jaki Graham), The Jazzmasters, and Paul Hardcastle.[1] Working regularly with vocalists such as Helen Rogers, Becki Biggins, and Margo LeDuc, Hardcastle has recruited several saxophonists including Gary Barnacle (on the first album), Snake Davis, Phil Todd, Tony Woods, and Rock Hendricks. All these albums have been played on smooth jazz radio in the United States, where some of the most played tracks include “Northern Lights”, “Lost in Space”, “Desire”, “Shine”, and “Serene”. He won the Billboard Smooth Jazz Artist Of The Year award in 2008. 2010’s The Jazzmasters VI track “Touch and Go”, featuring his son Paul Jr. on saxophone, reached No. 1 on the US Billboard Jazz songs chart, becoming his tenth number one on the Smooth Jazz chart in total.
“The Father of Quiet Storm Jazz and the man who brought you the smash hits “Rain Forest” and “19” is back with his 7th self entitled project “VII” featuring 10 songs of groove & chill will not disappoint.”

We see a trend developing: the Chicago area has an ever-growing number of jazz festivals! The jazz fest plays an important role during this era of specialized media, in that it is perhaps the single best way to expose the general public to jazz music. That’s why we wanted to compile a list of a few local & regional festivals with in driving distance to Chicagoland so you can start marking your calendars and planning ahead. There are a few milestones on the festival list this year, of course the 35th annual Chicago Jazz Festival and the 46th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival are the oldest on the list, but the Englewood Jazz Festival is moving into its 14th year and the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier turns 30 this year! At a time when the economy is struggling, it is good to know that the determination to present jazz in a festival atmosphere is still alive and well. Photography by BRYAN THOMPSON

brad goode Long known for his highly swinging recordings and performances, the
virtuostic trumpeter also has his “other” side, first exposed on the 1988 release “Shock of the New.” 25 years and 13 albums later, having established himself as a soloist of immediacy and warmth and a composer of striking originality, Goode is still stretching. With his culture-spanning band of Ghanian drummer Paa Kow, Brazilian bassist Bijoux Barbosa, Lebanese percussionist Rony Barrak, guitarist Bill Kopper and keyboardist Jeff Jenkins, “Chicago Red” also features Goode’s explorations in polytonal chord cycles - no less bold a break from standard procedure than fusion once was - to create an eclectic, electric and thoroughly grooving album.

FitzGerald’s has been a gathering spot since it was built in the early 1900’s. Up to 1925, the frame building at 6615 W. Roosevelt was a roadhouse used as a hunting lodge and sporting team headquarters. As more buildings rose along Roosevelt Road, the club was home to several nightclubs, the best-known being The Hunt Club, which flourished through the 1950’s and early 60’s--acts included Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey and Lill Armstrong. After the Hunt Club closed, the space became the Deer Lodge, complete with pool tables and a fortune teller.

Frank was headlining the world famous “Copacabana” when Tony Bennett took over the microphone on opening night and told the audience, “A few years back, Nat “King” Cole said that Frank D’Rone was the finest singer around. CMF
Jim Sellers is a Chicago based jazz pianist, having
been lucky enough to have performed with some great musicians, including Wynton Marsalis, Frank Catalano, Spider Saloff, Luba Mason, Ava Logan, Art Davis, Bill Yancey and many others. Jim’s interest in jazz began in grade school when he discovered Daddio Daley’s radio program on what was then WXFM. With a lot of tenacity and a little help from his older brother, Jim learned how to play the blues and to read music – having no formal lessons until he was in college. Still, by the time he was studying music as an undergraduate, he was proficient enough to be selected to perform in a trio with guest-artist Wynton Marsalis. He went on to earn a Master of Music degree from DePaul University in Chicago.

LINDY ENDRES
Hw
For Lindy
CMF
Endres, music played a bit of a different
role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the ‘dancer’, never the ‘singer’. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindy’s flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.

fundamental to those who create improvised music on a nightly basis. In this way, it is not enough to simply create, but the need to innovate guides each note. His art lies in addressing the ordinary modalities of life in an extraordinary way, placing notes in their most complimentary places with precision and enthusiasm. Each harmony he creates is purposeful in form as well as function. After starting his professional career touring Internationally, across the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, Maxwell returned home to conquer the Windy City. With equal parts genius and toil, Maxwell has become one the preeminent performers in the Chicago jazz landscape. His multi-instrumental talents have been lauded by fellow musicians and critics alike.

THE HARRIS GROUP
Hw
CMF
The Harris Group delivers an approach
to progressive jazz that focuses on more than improvisation. Influenced by Joe Beck and Steps Ahead, The Harris Group offers jazz that will no doubt stand the test of time. Although it is the basis of their repertoire, The Harris Group knows the audience for their music is broad, not defined by jazz alone. The Harris Group knows how to please an audience that is looking for meat and blood rather than fleeting hits.
