Detroit Jazz Festival announces National Jazz Competitions As part of its mission to foster and support jazz throughout the country, the Detroit Jazz Festival “Imported from Detroit” is now accepting submissions for two national jazz competitions—trumpet performance and jazz arrangement. Both competitions will be judged by prominent jazz artists and educators, with prize money totaling $5,000 and the chance to perform at the Detroit Jazz Festival on Labor Day Weekend, August 30 through September 2. The Marcus Belgrave National Jazz Trumpet Competition and JC Heard Jazz Arranging Competitions are designed to highlight a specific jazz composer and celebrate the artistry of the trumpeter and arranger by encouraging new works from young talent throughout the U.S. Persons age 35 years or younger are invited to arrange a Dave Brubeck composition of their choice for big band instrumentation with a featured soloist. A panel of judges, including Marcus Belgrave and Chris Collins, Detroit Jazz Festival Artistic Director, will select the grand-prize winner based on artistic excellence; creativity; technique; group interaction, originality, familiarity with the jazz vocabulary and stylistic continuity. The Marcus Belgrave National Jazz Trumpet Competition application deadline is July 10 and the JC Heard Jazz Arranging Competition application deadline is August 1. Visit www.detroitjazz.com to register and for more information.

gary burton celebrates 70th with new album, tour & book A popular phrase in years past was "Life Begins at 60," but Gary Burton - as he has done so often throughout his career - is re-writing the book on retirement. Having turned 70 in January, an age when most artists begin to solely look back, Burton forges ahead with his new Mack Avenue Records album, Guided Tour, available August 20, 2013, which solidifies the reputation of his next great band, The New Gary Burton Quartet. In addition, Burton has literally written the book on his life, saving those backward glances for his upcoming autobiography, LEARNING TO LISTEN: The Jazz Journey of Gary Burton available September 3, 2013 on Berklee Press. On Guided Tour, jazz's most innovative and accomplished vibraphonist proves that The New Gary Burton Quartet - which he premiered last summer on his Mack Avenue debut, Common Ground - was no one-trick pony. Featuring the prodigal guitar genius Julian Lage as well as two renowned veterans, bassist Scott Colley and drummer Antonio Sanchez, Guided Tour provides a road map to one of the most dynamic bands on the scene today. Burton sought out original material from all the group's members on Guided Tour (as he did with Common Ground), illuminating their wide range of cross-cultural musical styles. "They outdid themselves this time," he says. "And, of course, the superb musicianship, but with players like these, that's a given." Add in a tour guide like Burton, and

the path is clear, on an album likely to rank among the year's best. As he recounts in the upcoming autobiography, LEARNING TO LISTEN, Burton was already a steadily working musician in rural Indiana in his high school years, before heading for Nashville, recording the very first jazz-andcountry album (with guitarist Hank Garland), and scoring a major-label record contract-all before entering the Berklee College of Music at the age of 17, in 1960. LEARNING TO LISTEN provides great insight into his music-making process. He tells stories about living in Nashville and working alongside Chet Atkins and guitarist Hank Garland; of seeing Jimi Hendrix's first New York City performance; collaborating with Eric Clapton and members of the Eagles; touring and recording extensively with the iconic Tango musician Astor Piazzola and his ensemble; and even garnering a GRAMMY速 nomination for Best Classical Album with his recording Virtuosi. Burton also writes in great detail about how he learned and then refined his skill with improvisation, and how he creates music in the moment.

new release of the week PAUL MARINARO WITHOUT A SONG

PAUL MARINARO/122 MYRTLE RECORDS

"Without A Song" is the debut recording by Paul Marinaro, a Chicago-based jazz artist dubbed as having “on in Chicago - or just about anywhere else” by Howard Reich in The Chicago Tribune. Opting instead to f loving family, Joe’s passion for music never waned and was passed on to the last of his ten children.

For this album, Paul wanted to honor his father’s dream, acknowledge his musical influence, and incorporate h and songs. It is a meticulously culled, exciting, and varied selection of songs, on which Paul is accompanied b musicians.

Paul’s career, his musical journey, and the recording of this tribute album are the subject of a forthcoming doc Music”. Previews of the album can be found at withoutasong.com.

new release sneakpeek YELLOWJACKETS RISE IN THE ROAD MACK AVENUE RECORDS

Available Everywhere JUNE 25, 2013

A Rise In The Road, the Yellowjackets’ second Mack Avenue Records offering, is indeed an appropriate title for a time-honored jazz ensemble that has never been fearful of facing newer musical horizons, not to mention the myriad challenges of life itself. Throughout their storied 32-year history, the Yellowjackets have undergone numerous lineup changes, never failing to rise to the inevitable challenges of adjustment. Keyboardist Russell Ferrante and bassist Jimmy Haslip, the dual cornerstones of the group’s 21 previous recordings, were responsible for a sizable chunk of the Yellowjackets’ catalogue. Yet despite those shifts, Ferrante and Haslip, along with saxophonist Bob Mintzer (23-year member) and drummer William Kennedy (14-year member, spread out between two different time periods), soldiered on with a professionalism that has resulted in 17 Grammy® nominations—with two wins— countless sold-out tours, and worldwide critical acclaim. Last year Jimmy Haslip announced he was taking a hiatus to focus on other projects and spend more time with his family. Alas, all things must come to an end, as he has decided to make his hiatus permanent. Although his leaving is seismic within the scope of the Yellowjackets’ history—“A Rise In The Road,” if you please—change is no stranger to this consistently innovative and adaptable collective.

Photography by MARC VANOCUR

www.yellowjackets.com

A Rise In The Road introduces a new member—bassist Felix Pastorius—to replace Haslip. Pastorius, whose last name is widely familiar to jazz aficionados, steps in to contribute his talents to the group’s continuing sonic ventures (more on Felix Pastorius in a moment). In 2010, the Yellowjackets signed to Mack Avenue Records and in 2011 released Timeline, which reached #5 on Billboard’s jazz chart; the title cut received substantial national jazz radio airplay, making the song a staple on Billboard’s “Smooth Jazz Songs” chart. Now the Yellowjackets unveil A Rise In The Road, a 10-track study that burnishes the group’s sterling reputation for high quality tonal explorations and ensemble execution. Produced by Ferrante, Mintzer and Kennedy, A Rise In The Road stands shoulder-to-shoulder with their 21 previous efforts. “It’s about the challenges that people face in their lives and whatever path they are on: It’s not always smooth sailing, it’s not always a level road,” explains Ferrante, with regards to the project’s meaning. “Certainly, over the 32 years that we’ve been a band, we’ve had things come up, challenges such as musicians that have left the band, business people, relationships that you have built over the years. Things come to an end, and you have to meet the challenge and keep going forward.”

Jazz Jam Sessions

Chicago A jam session is a musical event, process, or activity where musicians play (i.e. “jam) by improvising without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements. Jam sessions are often used by musicians to develop new material, find suitable arrangements, or simply as a social gathering and communal practice session. Jam sessions may be based upon existing songs or forms, may be loosely based on an agreed chord progression or chart suggested by one participant, or may be wholly improvisational. Jam sessions can range from very loose gatherings of amateurs to sophisticated improvised recording sessions intended to be edited and released to the public. Here are a selection of a weekly Jazz Jam Sessions in Chicago and in the area to check out.

We see a trend developing: the Chicago area has an ever-growing number of jazz festivals! The jazz fest plays an important role during this era of specialized media, in that it is perhaps the single best way to expose the general public to jazz music. That’s why we wanted to compile a list of a few local & regional festivals with in driving distance to Chicagoland so you can start marking your calendars and planning ahead. There are a few milestones on the festival list this year, of course the 35th annual Chicago Jazz Festival and the 46th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival are the oldest on the list, but the Englewood Jazz Festival is moving into its 14th year and the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier turns 30 this year! At a time when the economy is struggling, it is good to know that the determination to present jazz in a festival atmosphere is still alive and well. Photography by BRYAN THOMPSON

The Chicago Jazz Festival has long been celebrated as the first of the lakefront music festivals, and as it marks its 35th year, the event will move to Millennium Park from festival grounds in Grant Park, August 29-September 1. Performances will also happen in the Chicago Cultural Center. (78 E. Washington) The festival is presented by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. (DCASE) and programmed in partnership with the Jazz Institute of Chicago. The first evening of the Chicago Jazz Festival, Thursday, August 29, will once again coincide with the final evening of Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz. Then on Friday, three stages will come alive with entertainment in Millennium Park (including the north and south ends of the Chase Promenade) as the festival begins that day at 2 p.m. and continues until 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday hours will also be extended from previous years, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and an additional stage will feature live performances, resulting in the festival providing the most hours of free jazz music than it has in recent years. As is the tradition of the festival, the 2013 Artist in Residence is Chicago drummer/percussionist Hamid Drake.

Drake moved to the Chicago area in the early sixties, living on the same street as Fred Anderson who would mentor the pre-teen drummer. By the early seventies, Drake joined Anderson’s band, playing with him on stage at the inaugural Chicago Jazz Festival in 1979. His Artist Residency affords Chicagoans the rare opportunity to hear him in several contexts over the course of one weekend, and his appearance at the Chicago Jazz Festival – 34 years after he first played this event – encompasses the festival’s entire history.

FitzGerald’s has been a gathering spot since it was built in the early 1900’s. Up to 1925, the frame building at 6615 W. Roosevelt was a roadhouse used as a hunting lodge and sporting team headquarters. As more buildings rose along Roosevelt Road, the club was home to several nightclubs, the best-known being The Hunt Club, which flourished through the 1950’s and early 60’s--acts included Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey and Lill Armstrong. After the Hunt Club closed, the space became the Deer Lodge, complete with pool tables and a fortune teller.

The band has traveled worldwide spreading their mission to nurture and perpetuate the art form of New Orleans Jazz. The PHJB began touring in 1963 and for many years there were several bands successfully touring under the name Preservation Hall. Many of the band's charter members performed with the pioneers who invented jazz in the early twentieth century including Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, and Bunk Johnson. Band leaders over the band's history include the brothers Willie and Percy Humphrey, husband and wife Billie and De De Pierce, famed pianist Sweet Emma Barrett, and in the modern day Wendell and John Brunious.

The Smooth Jazz Cruise welcomes George Benson and Boney James, two of the most influential contemporary jazz musicians of the decade, to The Chicago Theatre on Friday, June 21, in an encore of 2012’s sell out performance. At various points along the four-decade continuum of George Benson’s career, he has been heralded as a jazz guitarist of unparalleled chops, a vocalist with great emotional range and sophistication or a combination of both. “It’s a very simple equation,” the National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Master says of the longevity of his career and the ten Grammy Awards that have punctuated it along the way. “In the end, it’s about the songs and the stories. That’s what keeps the music fresh for me.” Boney James has four Gold albums, three Grammy nominations, a Soul Train Award and an NAACP Award nomination to his credit. He is currently touring to support his brand new hit cd The Beat. In 2010 Billboard Magazine named him “The No. 3 Top Contemporary Jazz Artist of the Decade.” Even so, James says, “I am just a saxophone player whose music has several different influences. Jazz is only one of them.”

Frank was headlining the world famous “Copacabana” when Tony Bennett took over the microphone on opening night and told the audience, “A few years back, Nat “King” Cole said that Frank D’Rone was the finest singer around. JIM SELLERS

Hw

CMF

Jim Sellers is a Chicago based jazz pianist, having

been lucky enough to have performed with some great musicians, including Wynton Marsalis, Frank Catalano, Spider Saloff, Luba Mason, Ava Logan, Art Davis, Bill Yancey and many others. Jim’s interest in jazz began in grade school when he discovered Daddio Daley’s radio program on what was then WXFM. With a lot of tenacity and a little help from his older brother, Jim learned how to play the blues and to read music – having no formal lessons until he was in college. Still, by the time he was studying music as an undergraduate, he was proficient enough to be selected to perform in a trio with guest-artist Wynton Marsalis. He went on to earn a Master of Music degree from DePaul University in Chicago.

LINDY ENDRES

Hw

For Lindy

CMF

Endres, music played a bit of a different

role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the ‘dancer’, never the ‘singer’. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindy’s flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.
