30th Chicago Blues Festival kicks off June 6th The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) is pleased to announce the headliners for the 30th Annual Chicago Blues Festival: Shemekia Copeland, Bobby Rush, Irma Thomas, Jimmy Johnson, Otis Clay, The Bar-Kays, Eddie Floyd, Sir Mack Rice and a multigenerational Chicago blues showcase finale featuring James Cotton, Lil’ Ed and Billy Branch, among others, closing the festival on Sunday. Admission is free. On Thursday, June 6, the festival will open for the first time at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Shemekia Copeland (pictured) will headline the evening with special guest, blues guitar prodigy and Buddy Guy collaborator Quinn Sullivan. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with openers Fernando Jones’ Blues Kids of America followed by Jamiah on Fire & the Red Machine. Moving to Grant Park for the weekend, the festival is “Rollin’ Up the River” to celebrate the blues with a musical journey up the Mississippi River. During the great migration from the south in the 1940s and 1950s, the “delta blues” landed in Chicago establishing the genre’s electric guitar sound known as the “Chicago blues” style. The voyage will start in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Mississippi on Friday; then continue on to Memphis, Tennessee, and St. Louis, Missouri, on Saturday; ending in
Chicago on Sunday, where the blues electrified the world. Friday, June 7: New Orleans, Louisiana and Mississippi The journey up the Mississippi begins in Grant Park at the Petrillo Music Shell at 6 p.m. with blues great Earnest “Guitar” Roy. Spun from the Clarksdale, Mississippi, blues tradition, Roy was influenced by his father, Earnest Roy, Sr. and mentor Albert King. From his early beginnings at the age of five, Roy has emerged with a sound all his own carrying the torch onward to new audiences. Taking the stage at 7 p.m. is the legendary Irma Thomas, the “Soul Queen of New Orleans.” Thomas is celebrating 50 years in the music business and is the perfect kick-off to a weekend of blues. Throughout her career she has had a string of hits that included “Time is on My Side” which was later recorded by The Rolling Stones. In 2005 her home was destroyed by hurricane Katrina, inspiring her 2006 album After the Rain which went on to win a Grammy® for Best Contemporary Blues Album. At 8:30 p.m. Mississippi blues man Bobby Rush will bring his “folk funk” to the Petrillo stage.

His unique style brings together blues, soul and funk making him one the most colorful performers on the contemporary chitlin’ circuit. With his first hit in 1971, “Chicken Heads,” followed by “Bow Legged Woman,” the multi-instrumentalist Rush is going strong, bringing his rollicking show to blues fans everywhere. Saturday, June 8: Chicago by way of Memphis, Tennessee and St. Louis, Missouri Saturday night rolls in with Ronnie Baker Brooks at 5 p.m. Chicago native Brooks’ music is steeped in the Memphis music scene, having recorded primarily in the Mississippi River town throughout his career. His soon-to-be-released project was recorded at the legendary Royal Studios in Memphis where iconic soul hits were spawned. Brooks is a true “son of the blues” having played with his father, the legendary Lonnie Brooks. He is an acclaimed singer, songwriter in his own right. His passionate playing and monster guitar sound underscores why his soul, blues sound (with a hint of R&B) makes you want to sing the blues. The internationally acclaimed gospel, soul and blues artist Otis Clay and the Platinum Band follows at 6:30 p.m. with what promises to be an arousing and inspiring performance. From his recent release, “Truth Is” on his own Echo label, to his best known recordings with Memphis based HiRecords, the album I Can’t Take It and singles “If I Could Reach Out” and “Try to Live My Life Without You,” Clay has spent more than 50 years in the music business. Joining Clay is St. Louis, Missouri, soul blues artist Uvee Hayes. Her unique vocals combine classic blues with an urban edge to her captivating lyrics. Saturday night closes with The Memphis Soul Revue starring The Bar-Kays with special guests Eddie Floyd and Sir Mack Rice at 8:10 p.m. The famed Memphis-based Stax Records recording artists take the stage showcasing their array of soul and R&B hits that defined an era. Memphis band The Bar-Kays rose to fame in the 1960s and 70s as a soul, funk and R&B group with hits like “Son of Shaft” and “Soul Finger.” American soul man Eddie Floyd is a singer and songwriter who created the monster hit “Knock On Wood” with Wilson Pickett. Sir Mack Rice completes the evening’s trio of soul. One of his best-known singles is the all-time classic, “Mustang Sally.” Sunday, June 9: Sweet Home Chicago Opening an evening with the blues sounds from the “windy city” at 5:30 p.m. is Delmark artist Shirley Johnson. As a Chicago blues queen, Johnson was influenced by the greats including Mahalia Jackson, Etta James and Koko Taylor which allowed her to develop her own gritty, soulful and smooth music.
Premier Chicago blues artist Jimmy Johnson will take the stage at 6:35 p.m. offering festival attendees a unique performance from a living legend. Since his 1978 contribution to Living Chicago Blues, Volume 1 with Alligator Records, Johnson has garnered international acclaim because of his soulful guitar and vocals. Having also recorded for Delmark, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary, Johnson’s style aims to please all audiences. The festival finale is a show stopper at 8 p.m. with Chicago Blues: Old School, New Millennium featuring James Cotton, John Primer, Billy Branch, Eddy “The Chief” Clearwater, Lil’ Ed, Deitra Farr, Demetria Taylor, Matt Skoller, Billy Flynn, Johnny Iguana Felton Crews & Kenny “Beedyeyes” Smith. James Cotton performed at the first Chicago Blues Festival in 1984 and this extraordinary set provides testament of the tradition and artistic genius that has established Chicago as the true “Blues Capitol of the World.” Visit www.chicagobluesfestival.us for updates. Jazz Education Network receives art works grant Jazz Education Network (JEN) has been chosen to receive a financial award to nonprofits, according to NEA Acting Chairman Joan Shigekawa. JEN organization was among those selected to receive a portion of the $80 million of public funding set aside for Art Works beneficiaries. Grants issued this year total $26.3 million in value, and have been given to organizations representing 13 creative disciplines; these grants are intended to support the work of organizations encouraging civic engagement and community development through the arts and creative education. The $40,000 NEA Art Works grant will be used to develop and promote the Traditional Jazz Curriculum Project, sponsored by JEN. This package, the first of its kind, provides high school and college educators with a basic curriculum for teaching traditional jazz styles to students, including New Orleans jazz and related genres. No single program has yet been designed to formalize traditional jazz curriculum, despite increased interest in academic jazz programs; this project will specifically aim to better expose students to both the music of traditional jazz greats (Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton and King Oliver among others) and of more contemporary jazz artists. Ultimately, promotion of the program is intended to help revitalize interest in traditional jazz through the inclusion and education of young scholars and musicians. Programming has already been piloted in accordance with the
National Standards for Music Education. JEN Co-founder and former president, Mary Jo Papich, has expressed her gratitude and excitement upon receipt of the grant; she confirms that the efforts of project director Dave Robinson have helped guarantee the project will be a success that teachers and students can benefit from. Robinson, who founded the Traditional Jazz Educators Network (TJEN), echoed these sentiments and said, “This Project will give today’s educators and students the tools they need to get involved in this aspect of music.” JEN was formed in 2009, and this organization is committed to promoting education and performance while also culturing new jazz audiences while fulfilling its mission to strengthen the jazz community. According to Shigekawa, “The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support these exciting and diverse arts projects that will take place throughout the United States. In addition to presenting scholarships to jazz students and educators, featuring student compositions, promoting outreach programs, providing internship and mentoring opportunities, and collecting music and instruments to be donated, JEN also hosts an annual international Conference. new release of the week GEORGE BENSON
INSPIRATION: A TRIBUTE TO NAT KING COLE CONCORD JAZZ After four years of touring and developing “An Unforgettable Tribute to Nat King Cole,” the legendary George Benson makes his most inspired album: Inspiration: A Tribute to Nat King Cole. Set for release June 4, 2013, this recording is one of the most meaningful of Benson’s career and is a testament to the spirit of Cole’s timeless body of work. Benson’s heartfelt renditions of some of Cole’s greatest songs with Nelson Riddle arrangements and the 42-piece Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra are complemented by duets with Tony Award winner Idina Menzel and rising star Judith Hill, along with a special collaboration with multi-GRAMMY and Pulitzer Prize-winning trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. Speaking on recording the album Benson says, “I felt every moment of it. You can’t put together a record like this without putting your heart into it. I got that from Nat King Cole. He put his heart into everything he did.” The careers of Benson and Cole share a similar arc, both establishing themselves first as highly respected instrumentalists before skyrocketing to crossover success once they began sharing their unforgettable voices with the world. Better known as a jazz pianist first, Nat King Cole’s major breakthrough came in 1943 when he added his melting baritone voice to “Straighten Up and Fly Right,” coincidentally the same year of George Benson’s birth. Benson, who had a well-established career as one of the world’s top jazz guitarists, made his major break in the pop world by singing “This Masquerade” and subsequently had the first jazz album to go platinum with Breezin. Yet, both of these remarkable artists remained true to their jazz roots as this album revels with 12 covers of Cole’s most endearing repertoire. As a dream project for Benson, this album is a love letter to Cole and a tribute in gratitude for his deep musical inspiration. It also demonstrates how uniquely suited Benson is to recreate and interpret these timeless treasures. Highlights on the album include an adaptation of Nelson Riddle’s arrangement of “Just One of Those Things,” with a signature Benson vocal/guitar scat solo, and Benson’s reading of the original chart of “Nature Boy,” which he previously interpreted and made and a pop hit in the late 70’s. Benson masterfully covers the classic “Smile,” with German jazz musician Till Brönner on trumpet. The song, originally written by Charlie Chaplin for his 1936 film “Modern Times,” was first sung by Cole in 1954 when John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons added lyrics. The album also contains stunning duets with Idina Menzel on “When I Fall In Love,” and Judith Hill on “Too Young,” as well the incomparable trumpet work of Wynton Marsalis on a fresh new arrangement of “Unforgettable.”
The album begins with a rare recording of “Little Georgie Benson” (age 8) singing “Mona Lisa” which stemmed from a singing contest Benson won and the award was the opportunity to record a song at a recording studio. Benson began singing Nat King Cole songs as a child in Pittsburgh and this recording not only shows his incredible range and musicality at the time but also the depth of admiration Benson has had for Cole from such a young age. Perhaps best know for his contemporary popular music – in multiple genres, Benson has become as iconic in music history as his musical hero Nat King Cole. Creating more than 30 recordings as a leader, winning ten10 Grammy Awards as well as becoming a NEA Jazz Master, George Benson has used his jazz roots as the foundation for an engaging mix of pop, R&B and other shades that add up to a style that appeals to a broad mainstream audience. Along the way, he has also established himself as a formidable singer – one whose biggest career hits have showcased his vocals as well as his guitar chops. Benson continues to astound and engage audiences taking his creative expression to new heights. A soulful interpretation, Inspiration: A Tribute to Nat King Cole is an exemplary work of art, giving reverence to the legacy of jazz and a fitting tribute to an American icon. Catch George with Saxman Boney James at the Chicago Theatre June 21.

EVERY MAN SHOULD KNOW Available Everywhere JUNE 11, 2013 COLUMBIA RECORDS
HARRY CON Harry Connick, Jr. has built a reputation for musical and emotional honesty. Never one to rest on his ever-growing list of laurels, Connick exposes his feelings as never before on Every Man Should Know. The new CD to be released on Columbia Records on June 11, contains twelve original songs for which Connick wrote music, lyrics and arrangements. “No rules, no limits,” is how the multi-talented artist describes the songs in his liner notes for the new collection. “I don’t recall ever reaching quite as deeply – or confidently – into my inhibition pool.”
When asked about the transformation, Connick explains that “I used to be more comfortable writing in a fantasy-style concept, using ideas that intrigued me but didn’t necessarily come from personal experience. It’s one thing to assume the role of a storyteller – it’s quite another when the story is your own. I felt ready to explore some of my personal experiences in some of the songs this time around.” Connick is quick to credit his collaborators, including guest soloists Branford Marsalis (whose soprano sax enriches “Let Me Stay”) and
www.harryconnickjr.com
NNICK, JR. Wynton Marsalis (extending the reflective mood of “Being Alone” with his trumpet) and longtime Band regulars Jerry Weldon on tenor sax and old friend Jonathan DuBose, Jr. on guitar on “I Love Her.” He gives special credit to guitarist Brian Sutton and the Nashville musicians assembled for several tracks. “Those Nashville guys are deep,” Connick marvels. “Before they play a note, they ask, `What are we playing about?’ And they like to play with you when you sing rather than laying down tracks before you sing, because they want to understand the sentiment of each song. They really helped me capture ‘Love My Life Away,’ a song about a guy dying from a disease who is facing the plodding nature of his life.”
The range of these songs is vast, touching upon love and loss, celebration and sorrow, tragedy and hope. With Every Man Should Know, Harry Connick, Jr. triumphs once again, with a depth of feeling that signals another milestone for one of the music world’s most multi-faceted artists.

Jazz Jam Sessions
Chicago A jam session is a musical event, process, or activity where musicians play (i.e. “jam) by improvising without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements. Jam sessions are often used by musicians to develop new material, find suitable arrangements, or simply as a social gathering and communal practice session. Jam sessions may be based upon existing songs or forms, may be loosely based on an agreed chord progression or chart suggested by one participant, or may be wholly improvisational. Jam sessions can range from very loose gatherings of amateurs to sophisticated improvised recording sessions intended to be edited and released to the public. Here are a selection of a weekly Jazz Jam Sessions in Chicago and in the area to check out.

We see a trend developing: the Chicago area has an ever-growing number of jazz festivals! The jazz fest plays an important role during this era of specialized media, in that it is perhaps the single best way to expose the general public to jazz music. That’s why we wanted to compile a list of a few local & regional festivals with in driving distance to Chicagoland so you can start marking your calendars and planning ahead. There are a few milestones on the festival list this year, of course the 35th annual Chicago Jazz Festival and the 46th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival are the oldest on the list, but the Englewood Jazz Festival is moving into its 14th year and the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier turns 30 this year! At a time when the economy is struggling, it is good to know that the determination to present jazz in a festival atmosphere is still alive and well. Photography by BRYAN THOMPSON
The Chicago Jazz Festival has long been celebrated as the first of the lakefront music festivals, and as it marks its 35th year, the event will move to Millennium Park from festival grounds in Grant Park, August 29-September 1. Performances will also happen in the Chicago Cultural Center. (78 E. Washington) The festival is presented by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. (DCASE) and programmed in partnership with the Jazz Institute of Chicago. The first evening of the Chicago Jazz Festival, Thursday, August 29, will once again coincide with the final evening of Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz. Then on Friday, three stages will come alive with entertainment in Millennium Park (including the north and south ends of the Chase Promenade) as the festival begins that day at 2 p.m. and continues until 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday hours will also be extended from previous years, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and an additional stage will feature live performances, resulting in the festival providing the most hours of free jazz music than it has in recent years. As is the tradition of the festival, the 2013 Artist in Residence is Chicago drummer/percussionist Hamid Drake.

Drake moved to the Chicago area in the early sixties, living on the same street as Fred Anderson who would mentor the pre-teen drummer. By the early seventies, Drake joined Anderson’s band, playing with him on stage at the inaugural Chicago Jazz Festival in 1979. His Artist Residency affords Chicagoans the rare opportunity to hear him in several contexts over the course of one weekend, and his appearance at the Chicago Jazz Festival – 34 years after he first played this event – encompasses the festival’s entire history.

FitzGerald’s has been a gathering spot since it was built in the early 1900’s. Up to 1925, the frame building at 6615 W. Roosevelt was a roadhouse used as a hunting lodge and sporting team headquarters. As more buildings rose along Roosevelt Road, the club was home to several nightclubs, the best-known being The Hunt Club, which flourished through the 1950’s and early 60’s--acts included Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey and Lill Armstrong. After the Hunt Club closed, the space became the Deer Lodge, complete with pool tables and a fortune teller.

Multiple Grammy-Award Winner Howard Levy is an acknowledged master of the diatonic harmonica, a superb pianist, innovative composer, recording artist, bandleader, teacher, producer, and Chicago area resident. His musical travels have taken him all over the geographical world and the musical map. Equally at home in Jazz, Classical music, Rock, Folk, Latin, and World Music, he brings a fresh lyrical approach to whatever he plays. This has made him a favorite with audiences worldwide, and a recording artist sought after by the likes of Kenny Loggins, Dolly Parton, Paquito D’Rivera, Styx, Donald Fagen, and Paul Simon. As a sideman, Howard has appeared on hundreds of CDs and played on many movie soundtracks. He is perhaps best known for the four CD’s he recorded with Bela Fleck and The Flecktones, a unique band that set the musical world on its ear back in the early 1990’s. He got back together with the band in 2010 and recorded the CD Rocket Science. They toured extensively in 2011-2012, and Howard won a Grammy for Best Instrumental Composition for “Life in Eleven”, which he wrote with Bela Fleck.

The Smooth Jazz Cruise welcomes George Benson and Boney James, two of the most influential contemporary jazz musicians of the decade, to The Chicago Theatre on Friday, June 21, in an encore of 2012’s sell out performance. At various points along the four-decade continuum of George Benson’s career, he has been heralded as a jazz guitarist of unparalleled chops, a vocalist with great emotional range and sophistication or a combination of both. “It’s a very simple equation,” the National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Master says of the longevity of his career and the ten Grammy Awards that have punctuated it along the way. “In the end, it’s about the songs and the stories. That’s what keeps the music fresh for me.” Boney James has four Gold albums, three Grammy nominations, a Soul Train Award and an NAACP Award nomination to his credit. He is currently touring to support his brand new hit cd The Beat. In 2010 Billboard Magazine named him “The No. 3 Top Contemporary Jazz Artist of the Decade.” Even so, James says, “I am just a saxophone player whose music has several different influences. Jazz is only one of them.”

FRANK D’RONE

CMF
“Frank D’Rone is one of the few finer singers and
performers around and creates great vibes with his audiences.” This quote, from Leonard Feather, one of the world’s foremost music critics, probably best describes Frank and his talents today. It takes a while to achieve words of this sort. Frank’s nique and rare gift has taken him before the spotlights of virtually every major nightclub in the United States. Frank was headlining the world famous “Copacabana” when Tony Bennett took over the microphone on opening night and told the audience, “A few years back, Nat “King” Cole said that Frank D’Rone was the finest singer around. Tonight he has proved that Nat was right!”

With a lot of tenacity and a little help from his older brother, Jim learned how to play the blues and to read music – having no formal lessons until he was in college. Still, by the time he was studying music as an undergraduate, he was proficient enough to be selected to perform in a trio with guest-artist Wynton Marsalis. He went on to earn a Master of Music degree from DePaul University in Chicago.

LINDY ENDRES
Hw
For Lindy
CMF
Endres, music played a bit of a different
role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the ‘dancer’, never the ‘singer’. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindy’s flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.

SHAWN MAXWELL
Hw
CMF
Shawn Maxwell has the urge—a quality
fundamental to those who create improvised music on a nightly basis. In this way, it is not enough to simply create, but the need to innovate guides each note. His art lies in addressing the ordinary modalities of life in an extraordinary way, placing notes in their most complimentary places with precision and enthusiasm. Each harmony he creates is purposeful in form as well as function. After starting his professional career touring Internationally, across the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, Maxwell returned home to conquer the Windy City. With equal parts genius and toil, Maxwell has become one the preeminent performers in the Chicago jazz landscape. His multi-instrumental talents have been lauded by fellow musicians and critics alike.

THE HARRIS GROUP
Hw
CMF
The Harris Group delivers an approach
to progressive jazz that focuses on more than improvisation. Influenced by Joe Beck and Steps Ahead, The Harris Group offers jazz that will no doubt stand the test of time. Although it is the basis of their repertoire, The Harris Group knows the audience for their music is broad, not defined by jazz alone. The Harris Group knows how to please an audience that is looking for meat and blood rather than fleeting hits.
