George wein Gets allstar salute in NYC Jack Kleinsinger’s Highlights in Jazz Swing Memories series continues with a very special event honoring NEA Jazz Master, Producer & Pianist George Wein. Kleinsinger has put together an allstar cast of musicians including Ron Carter, Anat Cohen, Wycliffe Gordon, Jay Leonhart, Lewis Nash, and Lew Tabackin will convene at the Tribeca Performance Arts Center in New York City on Thursday May 9 at 8PM. Tickets are $40.00 /$37.50 Mainstage Members and Students and are avialable at the box office (212)220-1460. Jazz Impresario George Wein is considered to be as much a legend as his festivals. Through his company, New Festival Productions, he has spearheaded hundreds of music events annually since 1954 when he produced the first Newport Jazz Festival - an event that started the “festival era,” according to jazz critic Leonard Feather.
He followed the success of America’s first outdoor jazz festival with the Newport Folk Festival in 1959. Later, he pioneered the concept of sponsor association with music events; the Schlitz Salute to Jazz and the Kool Jazz Festival preceded any other sponsor identity with entertainment events, giving the sponsor the title presentation that guaranteed mention of the sponsor’s name in publicity and promotion. His company went on to produce titled events for JVC, Mellon Bank, Verizon, Essence, Ben & Jerry’s, CareFusion and others. At 86, Wein has as much creative fuel as he did when he started the Newport festivals and advanced the concept of live music. In 2010, he founded Newport Festivals Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization that will perpetuate the history of jazz and folk music in Newport and will allow the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals to live on in perpetuity. As a result of his diverse contributions to jazz and world culture, Wein has been honored by heads of state, educational institutions and leading publications. In January, 2005, he was recognized with a Jazz Masters award as Jazz Advocate by the National Endowment for the Arts; in 2010, he was honored with the Pell Award for Outstanding Leadership in the Arts. In addition, honors and awards have been bestowed upon him by AARP, Studio Museum of Harlem, Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, New York Urban League, National Music Council, Pratt Institute, DownBeat magazine, The Jewish Advocate, Saint Peter’s Jazz Ministry, WBGO/Jazz 88, Symphony Space and other organizations around the world. Mr. Wein was inducted into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame for his contributions to the musical heritage of the State of Rhode Island. He is a member of the Collegium of Distinguished Alumni of Boston University and is the recipient of the Centennial Medallion Citation from the Hampton Institute as well as honorary degrees from the Berklee College of Music, Rhode Island College of Music, Five Towns College and North Carolina Central. Mr. Wein is a lifetime Honorary Trustee of Carnegie Hall and a member of the Board of Trustees at Jazz @ Lincoln Center. Mr. Wein was decorated with France’s Legion d’ Honneur for his creation of the contemporary jazz festival and was appointed Commandeur de L’Ordre des Arts et Lettres. In addition, he received the Bernardo O’Higgins Gran Oficial award, Chile’s highest award for a foreign citizen. George Wein is also an accomplished pianist whose group, the Newport All-Stars, has toured the United States, Europe and Japan. His band has featured some of the greatest musicians in the history of jazz music. In addition to his life in jazz, Mr. Wein has a long history of involvement with philanthropy and the arts, including the establishment of the Joyce and George Wein Chair of African American Studies at Boston University, and the Alexander Family Endowed Scholarship Fund at Simmons College and the Joyce Alexander Wein Prize at the Studio Museum in Harlem.

Musicians of any instrument, including voice, are welcome as are nonmusicians. Guiding artists will build on CMS’s legacy by helping participants focus on the common elements of all music, emphasizing keen awareness, personal expression, intensive listening and crosscultural communication. The workshop offers participants a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from and play with music masters, and to simply spend time with them in an informal setting.
“Reminiscent of CMS’s campus in Woodstock, the Full Moon Resort is the perfect place for a CMS 40th Anniversary Workshop,” said Karl Berger, CMS founder and artistic director. “It’s an environment that will excite and inspire, where musicians and students can live, play and record, just as they did at CMS decades ago. The non-traditional atmosphere of the Creative Music Studio Workshop will encourage participants to experiment, push beyond limits, genres and categories, to take risks, and to develop their own deeply personal musical expression.” A typical day at the CMS 40th Anniversary Workshop begins with body work such as Tai Chi or yoga, a gourmet breakfast and a morning master class with Guiding Artists. Lunch is at noon, followed by some free time. Afternoons feature two workshops/master classes with Guiding Artists John Medeski, Oliver Lake, Dave Douglas, Steven Bernstein, Don Byron, Marilyn Crispell, Steve Gorn, Tani Tabbal, Ken Filiano, Ken Wessel, Mark Helias, Thomas Buckner, Karl Berger and Ingrid Sertso. North Shore Center presents Aaron Neville The North Shore Center in Skokie presents Aaron Neville concert on Tuesday, April 16 at 7:30pm. Tickets range in price from $65 to $75 and are on sale now at the North Shore Center box office, NorthShoreCenter.org, or by calling (847) 673-6300. With his latest album, My True Story, the legendary Grammy-winning Aaron Neville revisits the music he grew up with, and adds a few new spins along the way. “These songs helped to mold me into who I am,” says Aaron Neville. “They’re all dear to my heart, and they rode with me, in my bones, through all these years.” Neville’s first release for Blue Note Records is a collection of twelve classic doo-wop numbers, performed in his utterly inimitable vocal style, and co-produced by Blue Note President Don Was and The Rolling Stones, Keith Richards. Neville will celebrate the release of his new solo album with an eagerly-anticipated spring concert tour and only Chicago-area performance at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie. The iconic R&B vocalist and multiple Grammy Award winner will perform material from the personally charged new collection, along with favorites from his prolific musical history. The selections on the album include classics by such vocal-group giants as Little Anthony and the Imperials (“Tears on My Pillow”), Hank Ballard and the Midnighters (“Work With Me, Annie”), and the Drifters (“Money Honey,” “Under the Boardwalk,”
“This Magic Moment”). To Neville, though, these songs weren’t just the soundtrack to his youth; they became the underpinning for all of the remarkable music he has created across five decades. My True Story, the artist’s first Blue Note Records release, represents a landmark in Aaron Neville’s five-decade career. It’s his highest-charting album to date, as well as his first-ever Top 10 album. The collection is also one of the most personal projects that Neville has ever created. This album and tour represent a culmination of Aaron Neville’s incredible career, which has seen him move seamlessly back and forth between solo work and his role in the first family of New Orleans music, the Neville Brothers. His first hit single was the landmark “Tell It Like It Is,” which held the Number One spot on the R&B charts for five weeks in 1967. He went on to win Grammy Awards for his triple-platinum 1989 collaboration with Linda Ronstadt Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind, and reached the Country charts with the title track of 1993’s The Grand Tour. A member of the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, his most recent project was the gospel album I Know I’ve Been Changed in 2010. My True Story has already inspired some of the most enthusiastic reviews of his career. Rolling Stone’s rave called Neville, “a true soul master at work,” while USA Today noted, “His sweet tenor fits these doo wop-era standards like a glove.” Mojo, meanwhile, stated, “Everything is perfectly suited to Neville’s achy-breaky falsetto, up there in the Smokey Robinson/Curtis Mayfield realm of delicious heartbreak and joy.” The upcoming tour will find Neville and his five-piece band, which features brother Charles Neville on saxophone, performing headlining slots at such prestigious festivals as the Tri-C Jazz Fest in Cleveland, the Houston International Festival and his hometown’s New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, an event with which Neville has a deep and longstanding association. In addition, Aaron Neville has been selected as the featured artist on this year’s official JazzFest poster—a significant honor that affirms his status as a Crescent City musical icon. Upcoming events at the North Shore Center include: Sandy Hackett’s Rat Pack Show; Music of the Baroque Israel in Egypt; Skokie Valley Symphony Orchestra Pops – Space Cowboys; David Sanborn with Joey DeFransesco; Salt Creek Ballet’s Alice in Wonderland; Maude Maggart - A Cabaret Concert; Ars Viva Symphony Orchestra Music of Corigliano, Concerto TBD, Sibelius; Northlight Theatre presents Stella & Lou; & DanceWorks Chicago Sons of the Never Wrong. All performances are held at the North Shore Center’s mainstage Center Theatre, located at 9501 North Skokie Boulevard. Free parking is available. For tickets visit www.NorthShoreCenter.org or call (847) 673-6300.

NIu JAZZ ENSEMBLE WITH TRUMPETER SEAN JONES The nationally renowned NIU Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Ron Carter will be performing with guest trumpeter Sean Jones on Thursday, April 11 at 8:00 pm in the Duke Ellington Ballroom located in the Holmes Student Center on Normal Avenue on the campus of Northern Illinois University. The concert is free and open to the public. As we’ve all been told, birds do it, bees do it – but anyone who’s actually gone to the trouble of falling in love knows that it’s a lot more complicated when humans get involved. Which can make the reality of relationships a bit disappointing for those weaned on a steady diet of radio-friendly love songs, but can also provide a much richer experience than it’s possible to describe in a couple of verses and a chorus. As has become evident over the course of his five previous albums, Sean Jones is particularly adept at plumbing complex emotional depths through his trumpet playing and composing. So when he set his mind to recording a set of love songs, it should come as no surprise that he delved into the evocative nuances of love rather than the more obvious boys-meets-girl, boy-loses-girl generalities. “I didn’t want to do your typical love songs record that just deals with one aspect of love,” Jones explains.
“Not just the love from a man to a woman or the positive emotional side of falling in love. I wanted to do an album that really dealt with a few different shades of love.” 2010 was certainly a year of change for the trumpeter. In the spring he stepped down from his position as Lead Trumpeter of Wynton Marsalis’ Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, a position that Jones held for over half a decade. Additionally, he formed a new relationship with Marcus Miller, joining the bassist for a European tour. In 2011, the title of Jones’ sixth CD, No Need For Words, summed up his overall approach. This is music that cuts straight to the emotional heart, whether dealing with passion, sensuality, parental nurturing, or spiritual forgiveness. Despite the multifarious views of amour represented on No Need For Words, an entirely different type of chemistry runs throughout the album – that between Jones and his bandmates, the core of whom are together for their fourth CD in five years. Jones assembled the rhythm section for his 2006 album Roots, after observing the fact that Miles Davis’ groups were comprised not of the legendary trumpeter’s friends but from the strongest available talent. The NIU Jazz Ensemble continues to gain high critical acclaim. Since June 1998 to the present, the Jazz Studies Program at NIU has been rated as one of the top 10 graduate jazz programs in the country by U.S. News & World Report. In addition, the NIU Jazz Studies has won significant recognition from Downbeat Magazine’s Student Recognition Awards, capturing more than 10 Outstanding Performance Awards. Jazz bands from NIU have received Outstanding Performance Awards at several major jazz festivals, including the prestigious Notre Dame, Elmhurst and Eau Claire Collegiate Jazz Festivals. The jazz faculty includes, Ronald Carter (Director of Jazz Studies, conductor, saxophone, vocal jazz, combos,) Richard Moore (clarinet, jazz combos) Robert Chappell (theory, piano, midi technology) Geof Bradfield (saxophone, theory, jazz history, improvisation), Rich Moore (Coordinator jazz combos, clarinet, saxophone), Tom Garling (trombone), Willie Pickens (piano), Fareed Haque (guitar, jazz combos, improvisation, jazz theory), Art Davis (trumpet, jazz aural skills & improvisation), Rodrigo Villanueva (Jazz Lab Band, arranging, drum set), Kelly Sill (Jazz bass, combos), and Mike Mixtacki (Latin Jazz Ensemble). The concert is free, but ticketed, and the Holmes Student Center is accessible to all. Group advance tickets may be reserved by calling Lynn Slater at 815-753-1546 or Ron Carter at 815-753-0643. Single tickets will be available at the door. www.niu.edu

DAVE DOUGLAS TIME TRAVEL GREEN LEAF MUSIC
In 2011, Douglas issued three “EPs” on Greenleaf Music: the first, entitled Rare Metals, showcased five tunes by Brass Ecstasy; the second, Orange Afternoons, showcased a quintet with Ravi Coltrane, Vijay Iyer, Linda Oh, and Marcus Gilmore. The final disc, Bad Mango, featured Douglas performing with So Percussion. The three titles were originally issued only as digital downloads, but were assembled for a physical CD release in box form in November of that year. In 2012, Douglas released a new quintet offering entitled Be Still. The album was a collection of new tunes and hymns that featured vocalist Aoife O’Donovan along with the group’s lineup of saxophonist Jon Irabagon, pianist Matt Mitchell, bassist Linda Oh, and drummer Rudy Royston. Fast forward to April 9, 2013, Douglas returns with the same quintet, minus O’Donovan, for the album Time Travel, recorded & mixed by Joe Ferla at Avatar Studios, April 2012 at the same sessions that yielded the album Be Still [2012] which Stereophile called “one of the best sounding records we’ve heard by any one in quite awhile.” Time Travel is available everywhere. www.greenleafmusic.com

John Coltrane The Complete Sun Ship Session (3 LPs) available late may
Jazz is largely a collaborative art. Louis Armstrong with the Hot Fives, Basie with the All-American Rhythm Section, Davis with the Original Quintet with Coltrane and Philly Joe Jones-the music has been defined not just by the leader, but also by the caliber of the musicians in his group. For Coltrane the Classic Quartet was the foundation for masterpieces like Sun Ship that reshaped jazz of the sixties and seventies. “It’s a funny thing”, McCoy Tyner noted in a 1978 interview. “The John Coltrane Quartet was actually four elements. We had one guy who led the whole team, but it was really a compounding of personalities, like four personalities contributing.” The Classic Quartet mirrors Coltrane, whose deep roots in the mainstream of jazz supported branches reaching far above his contemporaries. They created a unique sound, an instantly recognizable approach that transcended their standard jazz “combo’ format. They were capable of neartelepathic interaction and split-second reactions that freed the music to surpass the predictable. Photography by JIM MARSHALL
Nearly a half-century after his death Coltrane continues to influence and inspire jazz musicians and listeners alike. He changed the music like few before him (and perhaps no one since), yet his career was regrettably short-essentially a dozen years. While the output from that career is not inconsiderable, it is obviously finite, making such alternate takes that much more valuable. Sun Ship, recorded August 26, 1965, captures one of the last sessions by the Classic John Coltrane Quartet (Coltrane, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones). It comes at the culmination of a year in which Coltrane arguably reached his creative peak, a year rich in such masterworks. The Sun Ship album, though, was not issued until 1971, one of several Coltrane albums issued by Impulse Records after his death. And Sun Ship was, like many jazz albums, the product of editing between takes, a process overseen by John’s widow Alice. This Complete Sun Ship Session edition is much more: sourced from newly discovered original reels, the set includes the album’s five original compositions, unedited, in sequence of recording, with all of the takes as they evolved, as well as the surrounding conversations. More than just a sampling of a few alternate takes, the Complete Session offers a rare opportunity to eavesdrop on an iconic master at work. David Wild, liner notes. John Coltrane’s “Sun Ship” session was recorded at the RCA Recording studio on 24th Street by engineer Bob Simpson who also did superb work with Sonny Rollins, Charles Mingus, Albert Ayler and others. The original three-track masters with the tenor sax on one track, the piano and bass on another and the drums on the third track were recently discovered, enabling the complete session to be released for the first time. Kevin Reeves recently remixed the entire session with great sonic results, improving greatly on the original LP mix. Mosaic has remastered them and pressed them on 180gram vinyl at the renowned Record Technology Inc. plant in Camarillo, California.

Jazz Jam Sessions
Chicago A jam session is a musical event, process, or activity where musicians play (i.e. “jam) by improvising without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements. Jam sessions are often used by musicians to develop new material, find suitable arrangements, or simply as a social gathering and communal practice session. Jam sessions may be based upon existing songs or forms, may be loosely based on an agreed chord progression or chart suggested by one participant, or may be wholly improvisational. Jam sessions can range from very loose gatherings of amateurs to sophisticated improvised recording sessions intended to be edited and released to the public. Here are a selection of a weekly Jazz Jam Sessions in Chicago and in the area to check out.

We see a trend developing: the Chicago area has an ever-growing number of jazz festivals! The jazz fest plays an important role during this era of specialized media, in that it is perhaps the single best way to expose the general public to jazz music. That’s why we wanted to compile a list of a few local & regional festivals with in driving distance to Chicagoland so you can start marking your calendars and planning ahead. There are a few milestones on the festival list this year, of course the 35th annual Chicago Jazz Festival and the 46th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival are the oldest on the list, but the Englewood Jazz Festival is moving into its 14th year and the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier turns 30 this year! At a time when the economy is struggling, it is good to know that the determination to present jazz in a festival atmosphere is still alive and well. Photography by BRYAN THOMPSON

FitzGerald’s has been a gathering spot since it was built in the early 1900’s. Up to 1925, the frame building at 6615 W. Roosevelt was a roadhouse used as a hunting lodge and sporting team headquarters. As more buildings rose along Roosevelt Road, the club was home to several nightclubs, the best-known being The Hunt Club, which flourished through the 1950’s and early 60’s--acts included Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey and Lill Armstrong. After the Hunt Club closed, the space became the Deer Lodge, complete with pool tables and a fortune teller.

featuring Mike Stern, Ben Street and Bill Stewart
www.johnscofield.com
Born in Ohio and raised in suburban Connecticut, Scofield took up the guitar at age 11, inspired by both rock and blues players. He attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. After a debut recording with Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker, Scofield was a member of the Billy Cobham-George Duke band for two years. In 1977 he recorded with Charles Mingus, and joined the Gary Burton quartet. He began his international career as a bandleader and recording artist in 1978. From 1982-1985, Scofield toured and recorded with Miles Davis. His Davis stint placed him firmly in the foreground of jazz consciousness as a player and composer. Since that time he has prominently led his own groups in the international Jazz scene, recorded over 30 albums as a leader (many already classics) including collaborations with contemporary favorites like Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Eddie Harris, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Bill Frisell, Brad Mehldau, Mavis Staples, Government Mule, Jack DeJohnette, Joe Lovano and Phil Lesh. He’s played and recorded with Tony Williams, Jim Hall, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, Dave Holland, Terumasa Hino among many jazz legends. Throughout his career Scofield has punctuated his traditional jazz offerings with funk-oriented electric music. All along, the guitarist has kept an open musical mind.

hearing the sounds of Jazz and “down home” Blues. Encouraged by his favorite uncle and jazz musician Lewis Ogletree, he studied piano for seven years before attending Northern Illinois University with a major in music. “Frank D’Rone is one of the few finer singers and

It takes a while to achieve words of this sort. Frank’s nique and rare gift has taken him before the spotlights of virtually every major nightclub in the United States. Frank was headlining the world famous “Copacabana” when Tony Bennett took over the microphone on opening night and told the audience, “A few years back, Nat “King” Cole said that Frank D’Rone was the finest singer around. With a lot of tenacity and a little help from his older brother, Jim learned how to play the blues and to read music – having no formal lessons until he was in college. Still, by the time he was studying music as an undergraduate, he was proficient enough to be selected to perform in a trio with guest-artist Wynton Marsalis. LINDY ENDRES

For Lindy
CMF
Endres, music played a bit of a different
role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the ‘dancer’, never the ‘singer’. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindy’s flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.
