Ronnie Scott’s gets BBC film treatment Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in the Soho neighborhood of London is without a doubt one of Europe’s greatest jazz clubs attracting thousands yearly and presenting world class jazz players from all over the globe. For those of you not familiar with the iconic club’s history, there is a new documentary, Ronnie Scott’s All That Jazz, celebrating the founding of Ronnie Scott’s Jazz club in 1959. Scott, a rising young saxophone player, opened a club where he and his friends could play the music they liked. Over the following years, the club had its ups and downs, a few different locations, reflecting the changes in attitudes to jazz and the social life of surrounding Soho. Today, Ronnie Scott’s is known throughout the world as the hearbeat of British jazz. Omnibus/ BBC captures the history of Ronnie and his club with conversations with some of Ronnie’s greatest admirers including Mel Brooks, the Rt Hon Kenneth Clarke MP and writer Alan Plater, and features rare archive footage of some of the club’s historic performances by Zoot Sims, Sonny Rollins, Dizzy Gillespie and Ella Fitzgerald. Ronnie Scott’s All That Jazz was written and narrated by John Fordham and produced by Bob Portway.

MICHAEL WEINTROB EXHIBIT OPENS IN NEW ORLEANS Photographer Michael Weintrob has announced the New Orleans debut of his signature InstrumentHead portraiture series. The walkable photo exhibit will take place April 25 and May 1 at 2121 Chartres Street, the day before JazzFest kicks off each week. The April 25 exhibition will include performances by DJ Logic and Papa Mali and Friends featuring Robert Mercurio, Eric Bolivar and Eric McFadden. The May 1 exhibition will have live music from DJ Logic, The High and Mighty Brass Band and another surprise guest. This will be the first time Weintrob’s limited edition Giclée prints will be on sale to the general public. bret primack premieres at AZ. INT’L film festival The World Premiere of Bret Primack’s first feature film, “Taking Charge – The Pauly Cohen Story,” takes place this Wednesday, April 17 at the Arizona International Film Festival. The documentary chronicles the life trajectory of Pauly Cohen, a Brooklyn native who became lead trumpeter for artists such as Count Basie, Frank Sinatra, and Tony Bennett. Pauly Cohen is a Jazz elder who graduated from Lincoln High School in Brooklyn and within a few years, was working as a big band lead trumpeter with Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw and Charlie Barnet. His credits include hundreds of recording sessions, TV and Radio programs, and many many years on the road. An early mentor and friend was Dizzy Gillespie, dating back to the mid-40s, when they were both in the trumpet section of the Earl Hines Big Band that also included Charlie Parker. Pauly reached a creative peak in the 70s when he played lead trumpet with Count Basie. When Pauly moved to South Florida in his early 80s, he didn’t retire. Instead, he formed his own group populated by other big band veterans, which he continues to lead today. Pauly’s story is not just for music fans. It has a more universal appeal because it’s about something everyone experiences: aging. Most people lead a less active life after the age of seventy. But rather than stay home and watch
big band tributes on PBS, Pauly Cohen charges forward, focused solely on the music he’s playing today with his own band. This film is about a man in his 90s still actively pursuing his big band dream at a time in life when those who have survived the ravages of old age are most likely retired and lined up for an early dinner. Thankfully, there is a man of action like Pauly Cohen, to remind us that we can continue to do what we love, long past forced retirement. The film follows Pauly Cohen through a series of 90th Birthday week events including a Master Class with the Studio Big Band at Florida International University, a 90th Birthday Party, a Tribute/Roast and his weekly Big Band rehearsal. Along the way, Pauly reflects on his remarkable life in music, from his early days in the big bands of Artie Shaw and Tommy Dorsey, to his career peak, lead trumpet with Count Basie during the 70s. Bret “Jazz Video Guy” Primack has created the largest You Tube channel devoted to Jazz; 1100 videos with 21 million views including performances, interviews, educational material and documentaries featuring some of the
finest artists on the planet. A graduate of New York University’s Film School, Bret Primack worked in documentaries before he became a music journalist. In addition to hundreds of articles and interviews, Bret has written liner notes for McCoy Tyner, Ella Fitzgerald and many others. With the advent of computer assisted video, and web distribution, Bret returned to filmmaking in 2004. The Writer/Video Journalist has been at the forefront of new media since he helped create Jazz Central Station in 1995. In 1997, Bret was the first Jazz blogger with Bird Lives. His documentaries and Video Podcasts include “Orrin Keepnews, Producer” for the Concord Music Group, and “The Sonny Rollins Podcast,” for Rollins’ own Doxy Records and now, his first feature length documentary “Taking Charge – The Pauly Cohen Story.” View the trailer of “Taking Charge – The Pauly Cohen Story.”

JALC Purchases frank driggs photo collection Jazz at Lincoln Center has announced a donation from the estate of Frank Driggs of the legendary Frank Driggs Collection. It is the greatest archive of jazz photographs in the world and also contains a stunning and sizeable array of posters, sheet music, records, and Driggs’ personal papers. Though focused on jazz, the Frank Driggs Collection is unsurpassed in its scale and diversity. The Collection provides a profoundly important view into the bloodlines of American culture. With this acquisition, Jazz at Lincoln Center becomes the licensor for these images, and is committed to making them available for scholars, for museum exhibitions and for commercial use. In time, Jazz at Lincoln Center will dedicate a portion of its home, Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City, as a permanent, free public display for exhibitions of images and objects in the Collection. Managing and Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis put it this way, “When I want to play jazz, I pick up my horn. But when I want to see jazz, I look at those unbelievable photographs from Frank. They’re beautiful, inspiring, and a reminder of where it started – not just the ‘famous’ faces, but all those other cats who day in, day out, traveled the country and brought jazz from the bandstand to people here in America … and then all around the world.”

Thomas Chapin Film Project begins production Night Bird Song: The Thomas Chapin Story documented by Emmy winning filmmaker-director, Stephanie J. Castillo will tell Thomas’ story to a world that needs to know about a jazz master who left us too soon – but whose music is forever. Thomas Chapin was a versatile multi-instrumentalist, bandleader and composer, in the 80s and 90s, leading a trio performing his own music playing in New York City’s downtown scene, and at festivals and clubs around the world. An outstanding composer of larger works as well, he sometimes augmented the trio with strings and horn ensembles. Though leukemia tragically ended his life in 1998 at age 40, Thomas Chapin left behind a legacy of many excellent albums and performances, and a reputation as one of jazz’s more extraordinary musicians and one of the few musicians to exist in both the worlds of the downtown, experimentalist scene and mainstream jazz. He continues to be a highly influential and inspirational force to those who knew him and to those who continue to know him through his music and example. Filming will begin this summer in Europe at jazz festivals where Chapin performed and will be presented to large foundations and grantors to get funding to finish filming, editing and marketing the film by 2014. AVID ANBORN Photography by HOLLIS KING
CJM: You are coming to Chicago with Joey DeFrancesco and drummer Byron Landham, how did this group get put together and have you performed with Joey on a tour in the past or is this the first one? DS: I have been playing with Joey for about 3 years now. I met Byron though Joey and we just really hit it off. I love playing with Joey and Byron – it is so free and loose.
CJM: Are you planning on doing more tours with Joey DeFrancesco in the future? DS: Yes CJM: Does playing in a small group, like the one you are bringing to the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie, allow you to be more creative with your playing than with other larger groups? DS: Yes, because it’s easier to bend things, you only have two other people to deal with and you can kind of take things a lot of different places very easily.
CJM: Were there any artists in Chicago that influenced your playing? DS: I studied with a guy called Joe Daley when I was in Chicago. He was a great jazz saxophonist. There are a lot of great players from Chicago.
CJM: Do you have any memories you’d like to share about your time in Chicago or at Northwestern University? DS: I studied with Fred Hemke at Northwestern University and he was a fantastic classical saxophonist. I learned a great deal from him. I also learned a great deal from Joey Daley. I used to love to go to the clubs in Chicago and play. There was a club called McKee’s Lounge, down in Cottage Grove. That was a great place to play and hear music.
CJM: You have been successful in everything from rock to R&B and avant-garde to straight ahead jazz, why didn’t you focus on just one genre of music? DS: I enjoy different kinds of music and I frankly never understood why people felt they had to limit themselves to doing one kind of thing or another.
CJM: With all of your success and the incredible opportunity you have had to perform with literally thousands of musicians, is there a musician out there that you would like to share the stage with but to this point in your career you haven’t? DS: I never got a chance to play with Ray Charles. As much as I was influenced by him, and we certainly knew each other, I just never had a chance to play with him.
CJM: What would your best piece of advice be for a student that is thinking of a career in music? DS: Be sure you love what you do because sometimes that is the only thing that sustains you through the tough times.

NEW RELEASE of the week GEOF BRADFIELD
MELBA! ORIGIN RECORDS
When Chicago saxophonist and composer Geof Bradfield immersed himself in box after box of Melba Liston’s scores at Columbia College’s Center for Black Music, his hope was that his appreciation of Liston’s work would deepen, enhance his own skills as an arranger, and perhaps lead to a project that would raise her profile. With a Chamber Music America grant in hand, Bradfield went on to create this six-part suite for septet, tracing Liston’s career from Kansas City to her work with jazz legends to her seldom discussed stints in Motown and Jamaica. The response since its inaugural performance at the 2012 Chicago Jazz Festival has been nothing short of exuberant, drawing high praise from many, including piano great Randy Weston, Liston’s collaborator of four decades (“Melba got me, and she got you!”). “The long lines, complex themes and meticulous structuring of this score point to the high craft of Bradfield’s writing...”- Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune.

Wallace Roney’s most famous mentor was Miles Davis. It can’t be denied that Davis’ work and example still influence Roney’s music. However, Roney has latched on to the spiking, probing, darker side of Miles’ legacy which seems better suited to his musical temperament than does the winsomely lyrical playing of his famous colleague. Roney’s latest recording, Understanding, on HighNote Records is hard bop at its finest and features the concentrated power coupled with devastating power and originality for which Roney’s bands have become known. The band’s set list on this outing is as unique and through-provoking as its playing, offering tunes by Roy Brooks, Duke Pearson, McCoy Tyner as well as some originals by both band members and the leader. Wallace Roney earned the admiration and respect of his colleagues and his elders since age 16. He has been an integral part of the band with Tony Williams, Ornette Coleman, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Philly Joe Jones, Walter Davis Jr., Herbie Hancock, Jay McShann, David Murray, McCoy Tyner, Sonny Rollins, Curtis Fuller, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Dizzy Gillespie to name a few. He was one of the few musicians in his generation who learned and perfected his craft directly from alliances with Jazz Masters. But his most important and meaningful relationship was with Miles Davis. Wallace was mentored by Miles Davis after Miles heard him in 1983 at his birthday gala performance in Carnegie Hall. Their association peaked when Miles chose Wallace to share the stage at his historic performance in Montreux in 1991. Understanding will be released on April 23, 2013. www.wallaceroney.com.

Jazz Jam Sessions
Chicago A jam session is a musical event, process, or activity where musicians play (i.e. “jam) by improvising without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements. Jam sessions are often used by musicians to develop new material, find suitable arrangements, or simply as a social gathering and communal practice session. Jam sessions may be based upon existing songs or forms, may be loosely based on an agreed chord progression or chart suggested by one participant, or may be wholly improvisational. Jam sessions can range from very loose gatherings of amateurs to sophisticated improvised recording sessions intended to be edited and released to the public. Here are a selection of a weekly Jazz Jam Sessions in Chicago and in the area to check out.

We see a trend developing: the Chicago area has an ever-growing number of jazz festivals! The jazz fest plays an important role during this era of specialized media, in that it is perhaps the single best way to expose the general public to jazz music. That’s why we wanted to compile a list of a few local & regional festivals with in driving distance to Chicagoland so you can start marking your calendars and planning ahead. There are a few milestones on the festival list this year, of course the 35th annual Chicago Jazz Festival and the 46th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival are the oldest on the list, but the Englewood Jazz Festival is moving into its 14th year and the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier turns 30 this year! At a time when the economy is struggling, it is good to know that the determination to present jazz in a festival atmosphere is still alive and well. Photography by BRYAN THOMPSON

FitzGerald’s has been a gathering spot since it was built in the early 1900’s. Up to 1925, the frame building at 6615 W. Roosevelt was a roadhouse used as a hunting lodge and sporting team headquarters. As more buildings rose along Roosevelt Road, the club was home to several nightclubs, the best-known being The Hunt Club, which flourished through the 1950’s and early 60’s--acts included Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey and Lill Armstrong. After the Hunt Club closed, the space became the Deer Lodge, complete with pool tables and a fortune teller.

Acoustic Alchemy
has pushed the limits of the acoustic guitar’s potential by embracing a spectrum of musical styles ranging from straightahead jazz to folk to rock to world music and beyond. In the two and a half decades since their earliest recordings – despite a tragic setback in the late 1990s and the inherent challenges of the 21st century music industry – the group has assembled and sustained a vast and loyal following that stretches well beyond their U.K. origins. Through it all, the overriding mission of Acoustic Alchemy has been to reach the broadest possible audience by pushing the potential of instrumental music to embrace a broad spectrum of styles without being limited to any specific genre.

The Smooth Jazz Cruise welcomes George Benson and Boney James, two of the most influential contemporary jazz musicians of the decade, to The Chicago Theatre on Friday, June 21, in an encore of 2012’s sell out performance. At various points along the four-decade continuum of George Benson’s career, he has been heralded as a jazz guitarist of unparalleled chops, a vocalist with great emotional range and sophistication or a combination of both. “It’s a very simple equation,” the National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Master says of the longevity of his career and the ten Grammy Awards that have punctuated it along the way. “In the end, it’s about the songs and the stories. That’s what keeps the music fresh for me.” Boney James has four Gold albums, three Grammy nominations, a Soul Train Award and an NAACP Award nomination to his credit. He is currently touring to support his brand new hit cd The Beat. In 2010 Billboard Magazine named him “The No. 3 Top Contemporary Jazz Artist of the Decade.” Even so, James says, “I am just a saxophone player whose music has several different influences. Jazz is only one of them.”

FRANK D’RONE
Hw
CMF
“Frank D’Rone is one of the few finer singers and
performers around and creates great vibes with his audiences.” This quote, from Leonard Feather, one of the world’s foremost music critics, probably best describes Frank and his talents today. It takes a while to achieve words of this sort. Frank’s nique and rare gift has taken him before the spotlights of virtually every major nightclub in the United States. Frank was headlining the world famous “Copacabana” when Tony Bennett took over the microphone on opening night and told the audience, “A few years back, Nat “King” Cole said that Frank D’Rone was the finest singer around. Tonight he has proved that Nat was right!”

With a lot of tenacity and a little help from his older brother, Jim learned how to play the blues and to read music – having no formal lessons until he was in college. Still, by the time he was studying music as an undergraduate, he was proficient enough to be selected to perform in a trio with guest-artist Wynton Marsalis. He went on to earn a Master of Music degree from DePaul University in Chicago.

LINDY ENDRES
Hw
For Lindy
CMF
Endres, music played a bit of a different
role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the ‘dancer’, never the ‘singer’. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindy’s flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.

to the delight of Midwest audiences for over 10 years in venues ranging from legendary jazz clubs like The Green Mill to various dancehalls, roadhouses and churches. As testament to her rare versatility, Rita has been known to sing both legs of a wedding, nailing the ceremony and reception with equally soulful precision. If you haven’t heard about Rita McConville before, that’s understandable because she has been engaging her musical passion full time only recently…or as she likes to put it, as a recovering local television director, nearly three years clean.

Shawn Maxwell has the urge—a quality
fundamental to those who create improvised music on a nightly basis. In this way, it is not enough to simply create, but the need to innovate guides each note. His art lies in addressing the ordinary modalities of life in an extraordinary way, placing notes in their most complimentary places with precision and enthusiasm. Each harmony he creates is purposeful in form as well as function. After starting his professional career touring Internationally, across the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, Maxwell returned home to conquer the Windy City. With equal parts genius and toil, Maxwell has become one the preeminent performers in the Chicago jazz landscape. His multi-instrumental talents have been lauded by fellow musicians and critics alike.

The Harris Group delivers an approach

The Harris Group knows how to please an audience that is looking for meat and blood rather than fleeting hits.
