Collectively led by drummer and vocalist Guillermo E Brown, bassist Keith Witty and saxophonist Christophe Panzani, THIEFS is a grammatically incoherent jazz bastardization. Fully acoustic to fully electronic, THIEFS weaves elements of modern composition and improvisation into a boundary-less foundation of beats. Between them, Brown, Witty and Panzani have supported artists as varied as Amel Larrieux, Anthony Braxton, Carla Bley, David S. Ware, EL-P, Hocus Pocus, Jamie Lidell, Saul Williams, Somi and VIjay Iyer. As THIEFS, their experiences and influences make a hot mess in the melting pan. THIEFS has recently been named an FAJE (French American Jazz Exchange) grantee for 2012-2013, a joint program of FACE (French American Cultural Exchange) and Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, with generous funding from The Cultural Services of the French Embassy, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Société des Auteurs et Compositeurs de Musique (SACEM), Florence Gould Foundation, and InstitutFrançais.

NEW RELEASE of the week www.joeclarkbigband.com

joe clark big band

The title of this album is Lush. The word “lush” by itself can describe a man who drinks and becomes flirtatious, or it can depict something that is savory and appealing to the senses. The album includes a little of both, with characters like the Femme Fatale living in an unwritten story set in the streets of New Orleans, along with some of the richest and most beautiful new music in the big band repertoire. The listener will quickly fall in love with Joe’s musical characters that show us humor, heartbreak, love, and beauty as their story unfolds. The album is made up of five arrangements and three originals. Joe shines as an arranger with his Nelson Riddle-inspired Lush Life (Comm. New Trier High School, Nic Meyer, dir.), funky second-line infused Well You Needn’t, thoughtfully orchestrated Tenderly, inventive Samba de Martelo, and hardswinging Yesterday’s Gardenias. His real compositional voice is most apparent in his three originals: Red Sky, Free-Wheeling (Comm. Wheeling High School, Brian Logan, dir.), and Femme Fatale. The one-take performance of Red Sky most clearly reflects Joe’s deep understanding of composition and orchestration. Free-Wheeling, like Well You Needn’t, reflects Joe’s passion for the greasy sound of New Orleans brass bands. And Femme Fatale gives the world a look into Joe’s film-noir-savvy mind. “This album was an absolute pleasure to be a part of, and the listener is in for a real treat.” There is more in store for this group because as Joe said himself, “this is just the beginning” of the next wave of great Chicago music.

DOUG MACDONALD’S

REORGANIZED QUARTET

A journeyman in the best sense of the word, Los Angeles-based jazz guitarist Doug MacDonald exhibits an easy, old school, blues-tinged sense of swing that recalls such straight ahead influences as Kenny Burrell and Barney Kessel. On this potent outing, MacDonald is surrounded by a pair of like-minded old school burners on the LA scene in tenor saxophonist Clarence Webb and Hammond B-3 master and Bobby Pierce (who recorded with a young Pat Martino in his band on a couple of Cobblestone and Muse sessions from the early 1970s). Tenor saxophonist Rodger Neumann and drummer Harold Acey round out the personnel on MacDonald’s 11th as a leader. The collection kicks off with the jaunty, loping shuffle-swing number “G Jazz Blues,” which establishes the down home flavor of this inspired organ outing. The bouncy and ebullient 16-bar swinger “G.G.,” named for another significant MacDonald influence, the great guitarist and Blue Note recording artist Grant Green, demonstrates the tight unisons between MacDonald’s guitar and Webb’s tenor. “Bandera,” named for the Los Angeles restaurant where MacDonald has played for thirteen years, is a mellow bossa nova that features a string of potent solos from Pierce, Webb and the leader. The up-tempo swinger “Bat Into Hell,” with its allusions to John Coltrane’s “Lazy Bird,” is yet another showcase for MacDonald and Pierce both together and as individual soloists. Drummer Acey steps out with some relaxed vocals on a swinging rendition of the standard “I Remember You” while MacDonald showcases his beautiful chord melody playing on an unaccompanied medley of “Moon River” (a tune forever identified with the late crooner Andy Williams) and “Moonlight in Vermont” (a hit in 1952 for Stan Getz and guitar great Johnny Smith). Pierce, a real-deal B-3 burner from way back, showcases his considerable keyboard chops along with some earthy vocals on a dynamic rendition of the blues classic “Muddy Water.” Pierce also wails with unparalleled authority on the B-3 here. And the melancholy Gershwin staple “Isn’t It a Pity” is a perfect showcase for the smoky tenor sax of elder Webb. MacDonald’s gorgeous unaccompanied guitar intro to “Yesterdays” segues to an inventive 3/4 version of that oft-recorded jazz standard. Tenor saxophonist Neumann joins MacDonald on the frontline for some intricate unisons on the guitarist’s exuberant original “Indecisive” (based on the old Swing era Charlie Shavers number “Undecided”) and the shuffling “I’ve Got the Minor Blues,” a tune that MacDonald can trace back to his earliest gigs in Hawaii. The seasoned guitarist exhibits some beautiful chord melody work on an inventive take on “The Night Has a Thousand Eyes,” which shifts nimbly from alluring samba to swing. And he closes out Reorganized with his accomplished crew wailing in up-tempo mode on a rendition of Duke Pearson’s bebop classic, “Jeannine.”

chicagoland

We see a trend developing: the Chicago area has an ever-growing number of jazz festivals! The jazz fest plays an important role during this era of specialized media, in that it is perhaps the single best way to expose the general public to jazz music. That’s why we wanted to compile a list of a few local & regional festivals with in driving distance to Chicagoland so you can start marking your calendars and planning ahead. There are a few milestones on the festival list this year, of course the 35th annual Chicago Jazz Festival and the 46th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival are the oldest on the list, but the Englewood Jazz Festival is moving into its 14th year and the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier turns 30 this year! At a time when the economy is struggling, it is good to know that the determination to present jazz in a festival atmosphere is still alive and well. Photography by BRYAN THOMPSON

A LOOK AT chicagoland jazz festivals

The Detroit International Jazz Festival was founded in 1980 by Robert McCabe and the Detroit Renaissance. Along with the Detroit Grand Prix and the International Freedom Festival, Jazz Fest was intended to bring people into the city and to provide all segments of the population with world-class entertainment. It quickly became a Labor Day Weekend tradition at Hart Plaza, a city park along the Detroit River designed by Isamu Noguchi and Shuji Sadao. From 1980 to 1991, the festival flourished through a partnership with the highly regarded international jazz festival in Montreux, Switzerland, sharing performers and commissioned poster art. In 1991, the festival merged with Detroit’s Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts, where it resided until September 2005. In March 2005, Detroit philanthropist and Mack Avenue Records Chairman Gretchen Valade emerged as a major sponsor of the festival. With additional support from the Knight Foundation, the festival expanded programmatically and physically. The new footprint, covering three blocks of Woodward Avenue north to the newly developed Campus Martius Park, provided two additional stages and more space for food vendors and other activities. The result was record-breaking attendance and revitalization of the festival. In January 2006, Valade founded the Detroit International Jazz Festival Foundation, which took over production and management of the festival. Valade also committed $10 million to establish an endowment that would provide much-needed seed money for festival operations. The Detroit Jazz Festival is a major cultural institution, providing year-round concerts and educational programming that culminates in one of the world’s premier jazz festivals on Labor Day Weekend. Now in its 34th year, the festival takes place over several city blocks in downtown Detroit – from Hart Plaza to Campus Martius – with five stages and 100 acts over four days. It also offers educational activities for adults and children, fireworks, late-night jam sessions, rare opportunities to meet the artists and much more. And it’s all FREE.

BOOM!

When LIZ CALLAWAY and ANN HAMPTON CALLAWAY combine musical forces in their new show BOOM, memories come alive through the music of such greats as Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Carly Simon, The Beatles, Paul Simon, Jimmy Webb and Stevie Wonder, to name a few. The two Tony Award nominated stars share heartwarming and humorous stories of their years growing up in Chicago and New York. One of today’s most celebrated sister acts put their unmistakable stamp on solos and duets of songs such as “Both Sides Now”, “Up, Up and Away”, “That’s the Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be”, “Bridge Over Troubled Waters”, “Will You Love Me Tomorrow?” and “Downtown” among other classics. As a champion of the great American Songbook, Ann Hampton Callaway has made her mark as a singer, pianist, composer, lyricist, arranger, actress, educator, TV host and producer. Her unique singing style blends jazz and traditional pop, making her a mainstay in concert halls, theaters and jazz clubs as well as in the recording studio, on television, and in film. Ms. Callaway is best known for her Tony-nominated performance in the hit Broadway musical Swing! and for writing and singing the theme song to the hit TV series The Nanny. Callaway is a Platinum Award winning writer whose songs are featured on five of Barbra Streisand’s recent CD’s. FitzGerald’s has been a gathering spot since it was built in the early 1900’s. Up to 1925, the frame building at 6615 W. Roosevelt was a roadhouse used as a hunting lodge and sporting team headquarters. As more buildings rose along Roosevelt Road, the club was home to several nightclubs, the best-known being The Hunt Club, which flourished through the 1950’s and early 60’s--acts included Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey and Lill Armstrong. After the Hunt Club closed, the space became the Deer Lodge, complete with pool tables and a fortune teller.

Biggest Obstacles you have faced in your musical career? To be honest I’d have to say that at times, my own low self esteem has created unnecessary obstacles for me; when I felt that peoples expectations of what my music should be I could never live up to but I’ve always really appreciated those who like my choice of material and interpretation of tunes. Greatest Achievements in Music to this point? Greatest achievements...I’d count them as the great musicians that have been willing to record and work with me. Who has inspired you over the years to continue with your musical career? There again, these great musicians have inspired me starting with Lambert, Hendricks and Ross who I first heard at Bob Centano’s early on. Favorite CD you are listening to right now? I’m always most interested in hearing piano players and Monk is one of the most fascinating. Lately I’ve been listening to Carmen McCrae’s last CD featuring all Monk tunes. What are your future musical goals? I do have plenty to work on as far as piano playing skills, and that’s my focus now and of course, trying to keep my pipes exercised daily, so as to not deteriorate to drastically as I go towards that ‘final glide pattern’ if you get my drift. favorite cuisine to cook at home? Now there’s an interesting question. You know, you can almost feed your body any old thing when you’re young, or in what I laughingly call the ‘on borrowed time’ period of your life. But things do catch up with you and as of the last year and a half I’ve been on the Raw Organic Low Glycemic diet, that is, you eat nothing that has a face .I eat cia seeds, elixors greens tomatos avocados seeds and nuts. Beverage of choice? I drink only elixors, almond milk and a couple of teas that are potent. Last book you’ve read? I haven’t finished it yet, but the book called Emergance by Barbara Marx Hutton. Last concert you have attended? A Jazz Vespers by Ira Sullivan at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Niles, IL. Favorite TV Show? I’m into Ancient Aliens, The Universe, and Through the Wormhole. Favorite place in Chicago to hang out? I frequent John Baney’s Chambers, Katerina’s, The Jazz Showcase and Tommy Muellners jam session at the Serbian Village.

o DePaul Music School. My first Rush St. gigs were La Rue 32, and later Buzzy Rifkin’s Le Bistro. r ’60-63’ I went to New York and was booked out of the Morrison agency by a great agent, Tony o Toronto with my trio. I was intoxicated with St. Thomas and lived and played there after three home to Chicago and started playing here in the late 70’s. Currently, I’m working on a DVD with erina’s, and other venues throughout the Chicagoland area.”

LINDY ENDRES

Hw

For Lindy

CMF

Endres, music played a bit of a different

role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the ‘dancer’, never the ‘singer’. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindy’s flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.

806 S. Plymouth Ct., Chicago, IL 312.360.0234 www.jazzshowcase.com ______________________________________

NEW RELEASE OUT NOW Robin Watson’s “Fine and Mellow: A Tribute to Billie Holiday”

Robin Watson is Jazzlady Robin. A vocalist/leader,

her styling is described to be an appealing blend of Sarah, Dinah, Carmen and Nina, while her creativity is clearly influenced by that of her distant cousin, Ella. Robin’s performance career has spanned decades through Chicago’s premiere jazz venues, wooing audiences from large stages - Petrillo Bandshell, Garfield Park Conservatory, Pheasant Run, United Center, Odyssey Cruises, Showboat, Empress and Majestic Star Casinos- and more intimate music rooms at the Peninsula Hotel, Braxton’s, Tuscany’s, John & Tony’s, Metropolitan Club, Como Inn, Backroom and Cotton Clubs. Robin has a BA in vocal performance from Spelman College. Her humor, energy and authenticity make her performances compelling and engaging.

Robin Watson’s new CD release “Fine and Mellow” is a personal tribute to Lady Day Billie Holiday. Ms. Watson, an accomplished singer of the Jazz, Blues, Pop and Soul genre in her own right, highlights the nuance of Holiday’s unique vocal style while incorporating her own energy and range that has kept her in demand locally as well as past tours outside of the USA. Her rendition of Billie’s classic “You’ve Changed,” the prophetic tune “God Bless the Child,” to the bluesy swing of the title tune, “Fine and Mellow,” not only show Ms. Watson’s range of emotion and depth as a singer, but she understands the history behind the lyrics. It is a perfect balance of honoring one of the pioneers of women jazz singers with a fresh look. Pianist David Turner, bassist Rolfe Hokanson and drummer, Harold Morrison, set the groove just right. Without any studio antics, as a team this combo make the listener feel like they are in the very same room setting down a mellow tone. The CD is currently available for sale via my website www.jazzladyrobin.com. February 18, it will be available on cdbaby and I-tunes.

THE HARRIS GROUP

Hw

CMF

The Harris Group delivers an approach

to progressive jazz that focuses on more than improvisation. Influenced by Joe Beck and Steps Ahead, The Harris Group offers jazz that will no doubt stand the test of time. Although it is the basis of their repertoire, The Harris Group knows the audience for their music is broad, not defined by jazz alone. The Harris Group knows how to please an audience that is looking for meat and blood rather than fleeting hits.

GIGS No performances scheduled at this time.
