NEWS ITEM OF THE WEEK
The Grand Wazoo and Other Delights: A Tribute to Frank Zappa On Saturday, Dec. 29th, at the Park West, 322 W. Armitage, Chicago, just days after Frank Zappa’s 72nd birthday, the Chicago Jazz Orchestra (CJO) presents an adventurous tribute to this great American musical genius. The show, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will feature the 15-piece CJO along with saxophonist Ernie Watts, who was in Zappa’s band for the original recording of The Grand Wazoo. Electric violinist Mark Wood (TransSiberian Orchestra) and electric bassist Dave Morgan, who created the arrangements for this show, are also featured. Conducting the performance will be CJO artistic director Jeff Lindberg. This concert was recently moved from its originally scheduled location at the Harris Theater to the new venue at Park West. Tickets are on sale now priced at $35.00 and are for seated, general admission, and can be purchased from the concert venue website www.parkwestchicago.com, the Chicago Jazz Orchestra website www.chicagojazzorchestra.com or at the Park West venue at 322 W. Armitage. Jeff Lindberg’s Chicago Jazz Orchestra (CJO) is a 501C(3) not for profit organization founded in 1978 as the Jazz Members Big Band by Jeff Lindberg and the late Steve Jensen. Composed of Chicago’s top musicians, the CJO is Chicago’s oldest professional jazz orchestra in continuous operation and one of the oldest jazz orchestras in the country. Conductor and Artistic Director Jeff Lindberg is one of the foremost transcribers in jazz. As a result, the Orchestra’s repertoire draws upon his vast library, which includes the works of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Benny Carter, Oliver Nelson, Ray Charles and many others. The CJO recently announced its upcoming 2012-2013 concert season, including performances with such solo artists as Michael Feinstein, Ernie Watts, Mark Wood, Randy Brecker and Kurt Elling. For more information about the CJO’s season, please visit the website www.chicagojazzorchestra. com. The CJO receives support from the Stare Fund, the Illinois Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, The Joseph B. Glossberg Foundation, The Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, and the Oppenheimer Family Foundation. WDCB 90.9FM and Downbeat magazine are the Chicago Jazz Orchestra’s media sponsors. Additional in-kind support is also received from the Jazz Institute of Chicago.

larry coryell
with Larry Gray on Bass & Paul Wertico on Drums
TRIO
As one of the pioneers of jazz-rock -- perhaps the pioneer in the ears of some -- Larry Coryell deserves a special place in the history books. He brought what amounted to a nearly alien sensibility to jazz electric guitar playing in the 1960s, a hard-edged, cutting tone, phrasing and note-bending that owed as much to blues, rock and even country as it did to earlier, smoother bop influences. Yet as a true eclectic, armed with a brilliant technique, he is comfortable in almost every style, covering almost every base from the most decibel-heavy, distortionladen electric work to the most delicate, soothing, intricate lines on acoustic guitar. Unfortunately, a lot of his most crucial electric work from the ‘60s and ‘70s is missing on CD, tied up by the erratic reissue schemes of Vanguard, RCA and other labels, and by jazz-rock’s myopically low level of status in the CD era (although that mindset is slowly changing). Coryell established his multifarious musical voice, releasing two solo albums which mixed jazz, classical and rock ingredients. In late 1969 he recorded “Spaces”, the album for which he is most noted. It was a guitar blow-out which also included John McLaughlin who was also sitting on the fence between rock and jazz at the time and the cogitative result formed what many aficionados consider to be the embryo from which the fusion jazz movement of the 1970s emerged. It contained insane tempos and fiery guitar exchanges which were often beyond category not to mention some innovating acoustic bass work by Miroslav Vitous and power drumming by Billy Cobham both of whom were to make contributions to Jazz rock throughout the `70s. His career, however, began in era of guitar rock, where he was able to rise for a time with legends such as Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, and Eric Clapton. As this era came to a close, his musical expression took him on a diverse journey, and though he did not receive the level of commercial fame the aformentioned musicians had, he was still able to make his mark in music by way of the jazz & fusion world. His music continues to influence musicians and fans internationally and will continue to do so for a very long time.

getting to know
Vocalist Stephanie Browning “In the beginning there was Ella, her swinging version of “Mean to Me” was my favorite song as a child in Boulder. I took piano lessons as soon as they would let me, sang in every choir I could find. I moved to Chicago determined to learn on the bandstand. I found myself the Gold Star Sardine Bar eventually becoming the artist in residence, and recording a CD there. It was also there I met Swedish saxophonist Johan Stengard with whom I toured Sweden a couple times. Drummer Ronnie Bedford (who played with Louis Prima and Benny Carter among others) brought me to play in the Yellowstone Jazz Festival twice, and later put together a tour of the Midwest with me, and Bob Magnusson (Sarah Vaughn’s bass player for many years). I got rave reviews at the Indy Jazz Festival. I’ve sung in Japan, Hong Kong, Sweden, New York at Jazz at Lincoln Center, and many venues in Chicago.”
Biggest Obstacles you have faced in your musical career? Finding the right venue. It is surprisingly rare to find a place with the basic elements for live jazz: good acoustics, a well-maintained piano, professional lighting and staging. Greatest Achievements in Music to this point? Singing at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Who has inspired you over the years to continue with your musical career? My husband has always encouraged me to keep going, but what motivates me to continue is that nothing else that brings me to life like singing and playing music. Favorite MP3 or CD in you are listening to right now? The Mess Around by Ray Charles, I’ve been playing it on the piano. He plays with the force of pure rambunctious joy. What are your future musical goals? In no particular order: to make another good recording, develop my original material, accompany myself on piano, travel the world making music. Activities that you use to relax. Streaming Mad Men on Netflix.

“Frank D’Rone is one of the few finer singers and

It takes a while to achieve words of this sort. Frank’s nique and rare gift has taken him before the spotlights of virtually every major nightclub in the United States. Frank was headlining the world famous “Copacabana” when Tony Bennett took over the microphone on opening night and told the audience, “A few years back, Nat “King” Cole said that Frank D’Rone was the finest singer around. LINDY ENDRES

For Lindy
CMF
Endres, music played a bit of a different
role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the ‘dancer’, never the ‘singer’. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindy’s flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.

Each harmony he creates is purposeful in form as well as function. After starting his professional career touring Internationally, across the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, Maxwell returned home to conquer the Windy City. With equal parts genius and toil, Maxwell has become one the preeminent performers in the Chicago jazz landscape.
