Thirty‐three red seniors and four exhausted staff marched off the plane this Monday morning, bringing the senior Israel experience to its rousing conclusion. The class's last Shabbat was spent in Jerusalem at the Italian Synagogue and the Shirah Chadashah minyan, where our students were welcomed with open arms. The extra day in the south was spent learning about rural agriculture, plus a visit with homing pigeons, who, un l 1956, maintained their own corps in the Israeli army's communica on systems. Many, many thanks to the indefa gable Coach David Mar nez for logis cs management above and beyond the call of duty, to Ms. Becky Charous for late‐night supervision past all belief, to Dr. Rebecca Schorsch for maintaining I‐

Welcome back also to our senior interns, who did their learning stateside! Meira Levine shadowed at Northwestern University Hospital, in preventa ve medicine, onco‐fer lity, and cardiology. "It was an incredible experience," Meira glows. "I learned so much about different fields of medicine. For one thing, I learned from my onco‐fer lity mentor that females are not generally included in research studies‐‐medical studies are almost always performed on male volunteers. It's not fair and it's not sensible; our bodies work differently, our medicines have different effects, and we're trying to promote more studies that will appropriately diagnose and treat women's bodies ." Good for you, Meira!

The 2017 Curriculum Night was a success! We greeted 43 families from local and Chicago neighborhoods including students from Solomon Schechter, Akiba Schechter, Chicago Jewish Day School, Hillel Torah and several public middle schools. Our Head of School, Tony Frank, welcomed our guests and showed them a videographic preview of school life. Families reviewed op ons for athle cs, then followed a modified schedule where teachers prepared mini lessons providing a glimpse into what ninth graders could expect next year. A HUGE thank you to all the staff, student, and parent volunteers who supported this incredible event. Our guests got

a true sense of why Rochelle Zell is their first choice for high school!

PostIndustrial Tensions Debate Rages in A.P. U.S. History Class

Mrs. June Kramer's Advanced Placement U.S. History students assumed the roles of late 19th century immigrants, labor leaders and captains of industry. They passionately portrayed the conflic ng points of view emerging at the cusp of the modern age. Is unbridled capitalism compa ble with democracy? Is economic inequality the law of nature? What is necessary to build a strong na on? Mrs. Kramer reports, "We heard historical tes mony from labor, management, and the immigrants caught in the middle. To mi gate the tension, we enjoyed kosher snacks developed at the turn of the century: Cracker Jack and Oreos."

Math team par cipated in its fourth meet of the season against Deerfield, Lake Forest, Warren, and Carmel. Our senior team earned second place, which is phenomenal, considering that five out of the seven contestants were not seniors at all, but rising stars of the underclassmen levels! The seniors worked on the topic of vector analy c graphing, and our junior team earned third place on the topic of sequences and series. Congratula ons to our "seniors" in compe on: freshman Alex Bernat, junior Hadar Halivni, sophomores Jake Korol, David Levin, Josh Weisskopf, and seniors David Weisskopf and Akiva Stein.

Alumni News Kol Hakavod to to Daniel Warshawsky (CJHS '11) for being inducted into the IDF last night at a ceremony at the Kotel for the tzanhanim paratrooper brigade. Mazal Tov to his faily, including brother Josh Warshawsky (CJHS '08) and parents, Rochelle Zell board members Tami and Reuben Warshawsky. Mrs. Warshawsky sends Josh's report from Israel, "It was incredibly emo onal to stand at the Kotel and watch as 600 new paratroopers saluted the flag and thousands of people sang Ha kvah. The Rabbi of the paratroopers gave a beau ful charge to the new soldiers, telling them to be strong and brave, ‫ואמצו‬ ‫חזקו‬, the same thing we've been telling our soldiers since the ancient me of Joshua. At the same me, he proudly shared that this task of bearing arms is not forever, but only un l we reach the me Isaiah spoke about, when all people will beat their swords into plowshares, and na on will no longer threaten na on with war. I cried tears of pride, tears of fear, tears of hope for a future of peace. I love you, Daniel, ‫ואמץ‬ ‫"!חזק‬
