a few standouts as well: senior Lexi Levin and freshman Abby Becker won their last match 8-0. Come cheer on the team on Tuesday at Beacon Academy! Boys soccer had its first conference win this week. In our first match Monday vs. St. Benedict, we got on the board with two amazing goals by Eli Gurin, assisted by Eli Simmons and Eli Ecanow. St. Benedict tied it up in the second half, but we surged ahead and scored the winning kick late in the second half. Our next game versus Holy Trinity was a wild one, and we came up a little short 4-3, but Eli Gurin got his tenth goal of the season, Eli Simmons notched his first, and Jonah Magill scored his second of the season. There was some great ball movement in this match, we had assists by Jonah Magill, Gabe Chasin, Ari Rosen, Eli Ecanow, and Eli Gurin!" Primary Sources Online Students Engage with JSTOR We are excited to announce that Rochelle Zell students can now access the world-class digital library, JSTOR. JSTOR offers a growing collection of books, academic journals and primary sources covering a variety of subjects from economics to art to Jewish Studies. Students can access JSTOR using our school login on any computer connected to the Internet. Global Studies teacher Mr. Matthew Cohen is excited to engage in primary source learning with his students. "I plan to use JSTOR as a platform to teach my students how to conduct research, which is a valuable skill they will need throughout the rest of their education. By offering a database with credible sources, students can learn to explore these sources, analyze and evaluate them for credibility, know which sources are best for which tasks, and allow themselves

to become better critical thinkers." Their first project using JSTOR? "Exploring how ancient civilizations started and evaluating sources that help them answer if civilization in itself was a leap forward in progress for mankind."

A Taste of Torah: Selichot This Saturday night, the Ashkenazi community will begin saying the penitential prayers of selichot. (Sepharadim have been saying them since the beginning of Elul.) We are officially one week away from Rosh Hashannah. On Rosh Hashannah we crown God sovereign of the universe, and on Yom Kippur we atone for our sins from the previous year. Why does the Torah mandate this sequence? Would it not make more sense to enter the crowning of God as our purest selves? Rabbi Jonathan Sacks makes a profound point, noting that there are two central components of teshuvah, “commitment to the future and remorse about the past‌ The placing of Rosh Hashannah before Yom Kippur means that our determination to act better in the future is prior to our feelings of remorse about the past. To which we might add, that this is why we blow shofar on Rosh Hashannah. The shofar, too, turns our attention to what lies ahead, not behind (Mahzor, xxvii). Sacks suggests that Judaism prioritizes our future actions both with God and our fellow humans over our past transgressions. Both are essential. But the ritual calendar places emphasis on how we are going to take the strides into the future.

As a high school community, we remind ourselves each year of this reality. Students can recreate themselves in this upcoming year. Before looking back at what happened during last year, look forward! This is the dream of our learning community for 5777. Rav Beit Sefer Zach Silver
