Back to school
I stink at math. I joke that the only reason I passed was because I was the tallest girl in school and a decent basketball player—and every basketball coach I had from sixth grade through senior year was my math teacher.
Over the years, my kids have heard my constant lament about math, especially as they struggle with the subject, too. I hired a math genius one summer to TAMARA L. come to Chicago Parent’s Oak Park offices O’SHAUGHNESSY once a week to tutor my youngest, who struggled the most. Surprisingly, the young math genius gave her enough confidence going into the school year that she got a B+. And just this summer she learned she scored highest on the math portion of her SAT. Simply unbelievable to both of us, particularly because her language and writing skills are so strong. As it turns out, it might not be bad math genes that I bestowed upon my kids, but a really bad attitude about math. Parents’ attitudes matter when it comes to raising can-do students, the experts told us this month for our cover story. Adjusting my own attitude about math is something I plan to work
on this school year. I don’t know about you, but this feels like the summer we barely got to know and now we’re gearing up for back-toschool shopping and a return to busy school schedules. I don’t feel ready, but plan to put on an excited face and go into it with a really positive attitude. I hope this issue gives you some ideas to help make it the best school year. Let me know how it goes. Happy August.

But she says she was given a second chance for a better life and more opportunities when her grandparents adopted her at 13. “I made a decision to not become a product of my environment. Once you know what you don’t want, the things that you do want become clearer, more real and more tangible. There are not many things greater than the power of the human will. That, along with my faith in God and the support of my siblings, was a core part of it.” The Markham mom competes for the Ms. America crown Aug. 22-24 in Long Beach, Calif. How does it feel to be a role model to young women of color? There are no words to express the feeling. I’m just happy to be able to give back, to inspire and encourage and to make an impact on someone’s life. I have been there before so I know what it’s like to be told that your skin is not light enough, your curves are not small enough and your hair is not long enough. It gets to a point where you start to believe that you are just not good enough. But I have found that I’m worth it, and the journey was worth it. It’s just a great

feeling to know that because of my story, a discouraged, aspiring black girl won’t give up hope. How did you stop the negative moments in your life from determining your future? You can have excuses or you can have results, but you can’t have both. You cannot allow your reason why to become your reason why not. I don’t view negative moments as a setback, I see them as lessons and a good way to redirect yourself and to grow. You absolutely need failure to appreciate success. I just made sure to fail forward. philosophy, but the one thing that keeps me motivated when I get stuck is ‘Do what you can do with what you have where you are, and just take the next best step.’ You don’t have to be great to get started, but you have to get started to be great. What is your best advice for other single parents? Don’t be so hard on yourself, you are doing better than you think you are, so just keep doing the best that you can. Even more importantly, it’s OK to take some ‘me time.’ Don’t deprive yourself of rest, fun and food, and don’t feel guilty about it. You will do yourself and your family a favor if you take a moment to ‘woosah.’ CHICAGOPARENT.COM August 2019 11

FAILING WITH GUSTO
Fairytale Ballet Camps
Driven to worry Within 30 seconds of turning 15, my oldest son researched, priced and sent me a link for a driver’s education class. When I didn’t sign him up fast enough, he asked if he could borrow my credit card and handle it himself. From the time Daniel was a baby, I knew I was raising an old soul. Here was the kid whose favorite “games” as a child were ones imitating adults: “Look at my calculator, mommy! I’m doing my taxes!” (age 2) “Can I get a checkbook for Christmas?” (age 4) “I think I’m old enough to take the Metra downtown now, Mom.” (age 5) I remind Daniel all the time that I am the mother and he is the kid, but it doesn’t seem to stick. Yet his usefulness came into play when he left for a week to go to a friend’s cottage and none of us knew how to use Netflix. It was bittersweet dropping Dan off at his first driver’s ed class. I knew how excited he was. I also knew that this was one of the first giant steps towards independence. After a couple of classes, the barrage started. He wanted his official permit NOW. For once, I acquiesced and headed to the dreaded DMV. As most moms of teenagers know, this age group can be a bit surly. Kids can be cuddly one moment, but dive right into “I hate everyone” mode in a nanosecond. And good luck

He smiled for three hours after that. Part of me wondered if I was such a bad mother that my kid can’t wait to get that license and drive far, far away. Raising an old soul has always been tricky. These kids often appear as 40-year-olds, so confident and sure that you start feeling useless. DO they actually know more than you do? But there is magic in having such a child. That fire in his belly? That eagerness to guide his own ship? The thrill he has in advancing his destiny? Back to being those parents Viva is headed to second grade. That means it’s time for my wife and I to go back into “concerned parent of a student” mode. How do concerned parents usually express their investment in their children’s education? By aggravating their child’s teachers to near madness.

EVERY BOY BECOMES A MAN.
WHAT KIND WILL YOURS BECOME? Since 1889, parents have looked to Missouri Military Academy to give their boys structure, responsibility and love they need to grow, compete and thrive — and become young men in full command of their lives.

Some parents sugar their child’s educators, then ask for special consideration. (“We heard you like Starbucks, Mr. Teacher … oh, by the way…”) Others harass the teachers and administrators with strident rhetoric and private meeting tantrums. (“Don’t you know who I am? I’m a daddy blogger of some renown!”) Others still are passive aggressive, never missing a chance to put in their two cents about how the school should be run. (“Hello, Madame Principal! I didn’t know you shopped in this grocery store! You know, I’ve been thinking...”) Me and the missus? We’re all of the above. I don’t know exactly when we become the parents that teachers hide behind easels to avoid, but Viva’s preschool instructors would probably say, “By the end of the first informational meeting.” The transformation was instant and complete, like pushy parent werewolves just waiting for the full moon of matriculation. We’re more or less warm and mindful in “real life,” (Maybe? I think?) but if you’re teaching our kid we’re insufferable. Worst of all, we both teach so we should know better. We’ve
been face to face with anxious, obtrusive parents, and we rarely take to them … yet, here we are. We’ve met the enemy, and they are us. It seems the protective paternal/maternal instinct simply trumps politeness and, frequently, good sense. We love our child and we know enough to be dangerous, so woe betide any instructor, principal or dean who shares their contact information with us—you’re going to get a response to every update you send, and if you list office hours, we’re taking some. It comes from a good place, I promise, but if you teach Viva, I apologize in advance. You just gained a marvelous student … and her terrible Dad. Viva Teachers. Viva Viva. Viva Daddy. Viva is 7 years old. Daddy is about 6x that age. They live happily with Mommy in Chicago.

Simple, yet effective, tips you can use for any age
R
BY NATALIE DAL PRA
aising a child in 2019 is tough for a variety of reasons, but keeping them motivated at school when they’d
rather be on their phone or tablet 24/7 can seem downright impossible. That doesn’t mean all hope is lost. In fact, there are a few things parents can do to help guarantee motivated and successful kids.
Create a solid foundation for learning Sending your child to school for the first time is nerve-wracking for both the parent and the student. That’s why forming a secure attachment before school begins is so vital, says Amanda Moreno, director of the child development program at Erikson Institute in Chicago. “People forget that the reason parentchild attachment exists is to cause learning,” Moreno says. “This is called the ‘secure base phenomenon,’ meaning the security provided by parental love is what causes children to be brave and explore the world.” Moreno says you can see this phenomenon in action at the playground, when a child goes off to play, but returns often to check in with parents. She believes playing, talking and spending time together are the best ways to create an enthusiastic learner. Camille Farrington, managing director and senior research associate at the UChicago Consortium, says that presenting new ideas to kids early on is the key to getting them excited about learning. “It’s important to give young children exposure to new things and to help narrate their world.” Farrington suggests introducing kids to new foods, places and cultures as often as possible. This can be as simple as visiting
a new town or museum or restaurant. You don’t have to go far, either—just getting out of the Chicago area is enough to spark interest in how other people think and live.
Talk positively about school When you look back on your own time spent in a classroom, do you have negative or positive memories? For some of us, thinking about math tests and science experiments is enough to make us break out in a cold sweat. You don’t want school to be something your kids dread, however. Your job is to be positive about school and homework. “Talk to your kids about why we work and why school is so important,” Farrington
says. “If possible, take them to work with you. Demonstrate how exciting it is to learn and how rewarding it is to do well.” Rick Capaldi, author of 21st Century Parenting: A Guide to C Raising Emotionally Resilient R Children in an Unstable World, C eechoes this idea. “A child who walks into the cclassroom willing and able to eembrace a new opportunity does so because their parents d sset the stage for them,” he says. Capaldi says that parents can help a child to embrace educah tion by “talking up” school as a part of your family’s regular conversations. “You want them to see school as a rewarding, supportive experience and a natural transition from home.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 23

RAISE A CAN-DO STUDENT CONTINUED FROM PAGE 21 Communicate with your child’s teacher The older children get, the more difficult it can be to keep tabs on what’s going on in their classroom. That’s why consistent communication with their teachers is key, whether a child is 5 or 15, Farrington says. “Start reaching out early on. Check in with the teachers, tell them, ‘I really want to hear from you and I want to support you.’” Moreno adds that parents should not feel hesitant to give suggestions to teachers if they know their child is struggling. “Most teachers are willing to do a fair amount of individualizing, even for a child without delays, because they know each child is different.” For instance, if you know your child would be more engaged at school if they were given more
responsibility or if they were able to sit in a different area in the classroom, don’t be afraid to speak up.
Don’t use bribery It’s no secret that most kids don’t love homework. Since it’s an unavoidable part of school, how do we encourage them to complete the work without

having a meltdown? To begin with, don’t use bribery or sticker charts to motivate them. “When kids get frustrated with homework, it’s either because they don’t know why they’re doing it or they don’t know how to do it,” Farrington says. She suggests connecting the work to something your child cares about to help make the

assignment more interesting. “Don’t make them feel like the work is unpleasant. Ask them ‘what’s the opportunity here?’ or ‘what can we learn from this?’ Tell them, ‘When it feels challenging, it’s an opportunity to grow your brain’ versus telling them to do it because they have to do it.” Instead of dangling a reward for getting through a bunch of homework, Farrington recommends offering breaks when the work seems overwhelming. “Tell your child, ‘It’s hard to make your brain work hard for so long. Let’s work for 20 minutes, then rest for a little bit.’ Everyone has to take breaks when they’re working, even adults.” Don’t assume your child will always want or need your assistance, however. Support them through setbacks It’s heartbreaking to see your child struggle in school. Lines like, “I’ll never be able to do math!” or “I’m stupid, I don’t know how to do this” are hard to hear, but it’s important to let your child know their feelings are valid in those tough moments, Moreno says. “You can do a lot of nodding and hugging... That doesn’t mean you’re agreeing with them that they’re stupid, it means you are acknowledging the high intensity emotions of the moment,” Moreno says. “Realize
that in this moment, your child might believe with every cell of their being that they can’t do math, but if you stay grounded in your support, they probably won’t always feel this way.”
Have an open dialogue According to Capaldi, the earlier you establish communication with your kids, the
he says. As kids get older and enter middle and high school, pressures begin to increase. That’s why setting boundaries is also essential, even if kids object to them. “Balancing schoolwork, housework, a social network, social media, preparation college, along with for college hormonal changes and hormo Find more performance expectaper tips to a great tions all impact a tio school year at teenager’s emotionte ChicagoParent.com/ aal temperature... school Kids, no matter better, so K their that you can th age, feel more secure avoid problems ms secu when they know there are boundwhen your child ld aries,” Cap Capaldi says. is a teenager. “This is all about parental “Challenges up to, during and leadership, recognizing that in high school are less oversometimes parents have to make whelming when addressed by parents who establish and ongo- tough, unpopular decisions because it’s in the best interest ing dialogue about school as part of the family conversation,” of the family.”

To bust out of the same-old-snack routine, we reached out to some super creative Chicago moms and a dad who have battled the munchie monster with healthy treats perfect for settling down with homework before dinner.

HUNGRY TUMMY TAMERS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 27 Magical Unicorn Food by Nancy Weiss Unicorns have been described as providing a feeling of perpetual bliss. They are mystical creatures that bring pure happiness and satisfaction. Perhaps this explains why so many young children are obsessed with them. Ingredients 2/3 cup of popcorn kernels 3 Tbsp. coconut oil 1 bag gummy bears 2 cups regular or gluten-free pretzels 1 package good quality white and/or dark chocolate Sprinkles, colored gold dust, colorful non-perils candy Sea salt (to taste)
*This recipe can be as creative and imaginative as you and your kids like. You also can substitute about 5 cups of rice Chex for the popcorn. Directions ■ Place the coconut oil in a pan with 3 kernels of corn and heat. When the kernels pop, the oil is hot enough add the rest of the 2/3 cup of kernels in an even layer. Then cover with a lid and pop. Gently shake your pan until all kernels are popped—be careful not to burn the corn. Once the popping slows to several seconds between pops, remove popcorn from heat.
■ Add
the popcorn to a large bowl and then add the pretzels and the gummy bears. ■ Melt your chocolate in the microwave—this will only take about 1 ½ minutes. ■ Pour the melted chocolate into the popcorn and pretzels, shake a few dashes of sea salt into the mixture and stir well with a wooden spoon. ■ Pour the popcorn mixture onto a wax paper-lined baking sheet. ■ Add the candy decorations (this is when the kids get excited about helping.) ■ Allow it to set about an hour and then break it into pieces. I stored the unicorn food it in zip-close bags. As an over-50 fashion blogger, Nancy Weiss seeks to inspire women to find the best personal version of themselves. She also is a grandmother to five: four granddaughters between 6 and 12 and a 2-month-old grandson. She shares fashion ideas, along with some tried and true recipes, and this one alone has made her grandmother of the year. Follow her on Instagram @a.two.drink.minimum

hen the family calendar starts to fill up with school events, before and after care, scouts, music lessons and sports, even the idea of constructing a routine can be tough.
It could be there’s simply too much clutter on that calendar. “So one too many ‘yes I can do that,’ ‘yes, I’ll get that to you,’ ‘yes, I’ll be there.’ While ‘yes’ is important and we want to live a life of ‘yes,’ it’s also important to set up boundaries by considering saying ‘no’ at times when we are prioritizing our calendar to align with our interests and our values,” says Kristyn Ivey, a Platinum Certified KonMari Consultant in Chicago who owns For the Love of Tidy.

amar Manasseh didn’t once stop painting while preaching from the makeshift pulpit of a doorway of an empty shipping container. A bandana corralled her hair as she dipped a paintbrush into a fresh can of “MASK pink.” “I’m tired of going to funerals for teenagers who only expect to wear a suit when they’re in a casket,” says Manasseh, founder of Mothers Against Senseless Killings, or MASK. “If I can help keep them alive, then that’s what I’ll do.”
Ground zero for MASK is at the corner of 75th Street and Stewart Avenue, the intersection of Gunfire Violence and Mourning Mothers, in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago. Across from a liquor store, a once longvacant, long-neglected lot now houses a few empty trailers that will soon become improvised classrooms for residents. “In 2015, me and few other mothers sat on this corner for an entire day to make sure nobody else got murdered here,” says Manasseh, mom of two adult children, ages 23 and 20. “Here we are four years later still doing it. Violence happens every day here. So this is how I fight it every day.” MASK’s new educational center will offer GED classes for local kids who never graduated
from high school, as well as job skills training and other life skills. “Kids want to believe that someone loves them, someone cares about them, someone gives a damn about their future,” Manasseh says. “If they’re here at these classrooms, then they’re safe, they’re protected, they’re doing something about their future.” Englewood is a 3-square-mile community on the city’s south side with an estimated 26,000 residents, depending who answered their door that day. The average life expectancy here hovers around 60 years old, much younger than other more affluent, safer neighborhoods in Chicago, according to a New York University School of Medicine analysis from earlier this year. It was based on data compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and CONTINUED ON PAGE 36

Prevention from 2010 to 2015. Since 2015, MASK mothers have been doing everything they can to keep residents safe from gun violence, mostly by engaging with them on a daily basis while creating a new paradigm of “policing” its neighborhoods. On one summer-like weekend in early June, at least 52 people were shot, 10 fatally, by shootings across the city, Chicago police says. Lori Lightfoot campaigned to be Chicago’s mayor on promises to better focus City Hall’s resources on neighborhoods such as Englewood, in part by injecting economic development, new jobs and school improvements. Manasseh, who hasn’t met a door she hasn’t opened, is determined to meet with Lightfoot as soon as possible. “Let’s show the rest of our country what can happen when we educate, not legislate, our way out of our gun problem,” Manasseh wrote in an opinion piece for Crain’s Chicago Business. Manasseh, who’s Jewish, abides by the concept “tikkun olam,” defined by acts performed to repair our cracked world.

“If this cracked neighborhood don’t scream for repairs, I don’t know what does,” she says as a police siren screams in the background. Manasseh doesn’t see problems. She sees cracks that need to be filled with whatever it takes—hard work, tough love, persistent encouragement, dogged determination or good old-fashioned grit. She’ll accept help from anyone who can use a broom, fix a broken door or has a passion to repaint the world in brighter hues. “You leaving?” Manasseh asks a young man who helped clean up the MASK lot. “Yeah, I got to make some money downtown,” he replies. He’s one of the fabled Chicago Bucket Boys, the mannish boys who turn upside down buckets into makeshift drum sets to perform for tips at touristy spots across the city. “I hear ya, Baby. Be careful!” Manasseh replies while continuing to paint. Kendra Snow, one of MASK’s first members, is a mom of seven, a grandmother and “big mama” to dozens of other neighborhood children. In 2015, when MASK just got rolling, her teenage son got shot, twice in the back, near this intersection. “I felt betrayed by my neighborhood,” Snow says, looking across at the liquor store on the opposite corner. “It hurt my heart, bruised my soul.” Two other relatives also got shot near here. “This is why I do what I do for MASK every day,” says Snow, who once snatched a loaded gun out of the hands of a young man. “I said, ‘Give me that (expletive) gun!’ And he did.” Englewood pride runs through Snow’s veins. “I don’t remember ever not living here,” she says. “Over the years, the violence just got

out of hand.” That’s how she met Manasseh four years ago, in the bloody wake of gunfire. “We met because of what she do for Englewood,” Snow says. That first day, Manasseh checked the size of Snow’s shirt so she could give her a MASK shirt to wear. “That’s how I became a member,” Snow says. “That’s how MASK grows, one T-shirt at a time,” Manasseh says. “You gotta do what you gotta do. You can’t give people a chance to say no.” The two mothers love each other like sisters. They also bicker like sisters. “All she do is walk around and holler,” Snow says, only half-jokingly. Englewood resident Kohmee Parrett believes in the MASK cause. “Tamar lives in the clouds. Kendra lives on the ground. I’m somewhere in the middle, turning obstacles into opportunities. That’s my job. We need to franchise MASK in other communities.” There are currently five MASK chapters in other communities across the country. “We didn’t do this for people to only help us here in Englewood, but to also do this in their own community,” Manasseh says, dipping her paintbrush into a can of bright pink hopefulness. “I encourage mothers–and fathers–to do this where they live, too. We can all be better parents, right?” For more info on MASK, visit the organization’s website at ontheblock.org

They take in cats from several areas, but mostly from Southeast Kentucky, which has a high kill rate for cats. The café is filled with cat décor, toys and free arcade games such as Nintendo64 Mario Kart. It’s a great place to relax with a canned beverage, snuggle with some kitties and play retro arcade games. To enter, everyone must be 7 or older. Plus, cats cannot be picked up, but you are welcome to pet and play as much as you like. Cat yoga and comedy nights are on the calendar
and the entire place can be rented for one-hour birthday parties. Open afternoons and evenings except Wednesdays. Reservations recommended. Check the website for hours as catnaps are taken on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

honor for me.” The lounge area has comfy spots for people and cats to sit, including cool hanging chairs and nooks for cats by the windows, as well as toys to play with the felines or cat-themed board games. Reservations are recommended. $14 per person per hour for the main lounge and $18 if you choose to visit the Kitten Korner. Refrigerated bottled drinks and a few snacks are available, or you can pick up food or drink from Gallery Café. Open Wednesday-Sunday. Check the website for hours. Now what? How to return to work after a career break
L
BY MEGAN MURRAY ELSENER
ike many moms, after 13 years staying home to raise her three children, Oak Park mother Maria Ping found herself ready to
return to work. She soon discovered how daunting it
can feel trying to figure out how to do it with the big resume gap. There is no one right answer for anyone when it comes to re-entering the workforce, says Mary Matas, career coach at Restart Your Career, a career counseling firm based in Oak Park. “Listen to what you need and what your family needs,” she says. “This may mean working part-time, full-time, working from home, a less stressful job, the need for more balance, and even a total career change. It may be a perfect opportunity to try something new.”
Find what you love When you are ready to get yourself back on the career highway, the first important thing to do is find what you love. “The main advice I have for women who are looking to re-enter the workforce is to do something that lights you up,” says River Forest author and happiness coach Steffani LeFevour. “Don’t just look to work in a job or career that you’re good at. Go after one that you love and then going back to work won’t even feel like work because you’ll be excited about this new life adventure.” It worked for Ping. She was a registered nurse with a BSN degree when she got pregnant with her third child and stayed home to raise the kids. “(I) had a glimmer of wanting to be a breastfeeding supporter, but didn’t know
what would be my next step,” Ping says. “While I was staying at home, I decided to volunteer as a La Leche League leader and began my lactation hours to follow my passion and interest.” LeFevour says she finds that once her clients follow their passion, the rest generally falls into place. “We don’t need to buy into the limiting belief that says once we’re past a certain age, we can’t reinvent ourselves or start in a totally new career,” she says. “We can and many do. So follow that model and do what you love.”
Create a plan and a pitch Once a mom makes the decision to go back to work, a great place to start is working with a career coach to create a step-bystep plan. Elizabeth Newhart, career and executive coach at Chicago-based Elizabeth Newhart Coaching, stresses that it’s important to get clear on the skills, strengths and value you bring to the table and to articulate that to would-be employers. “I recommend creating a two- to

three-sentence ‘elevator pitch’ that speaks to those things,” Newhart says. “Use this concise pitch during phone interviews and when networking to open the door.” Matas says practice makes perfect. “Practice your responses with someone who works in HR, recruiting, a career coach or someone in the field who can help guide you with your responses,” she says. “The more you practice, the more confident you will feel and the better your responses will be.”
Network and stay informed Your network is often key to getting the word out that you are looking for a career restart. “Begin networking with friends, family, neighbors and acquaintances you may know through groups, sports and
social media,” Newhart says. “This can feel intimidating to some, so start with what feels manageable, like coffee, lunch or drinks.” She also suggests subscribing to industry or professional publications, signing up for webinars and perusing LinkedIn and profession-related groups for current information about your field.
Update your resume and online presence Give your resume a total refresh, not just from a content standpoint, but with a current look and feel. “There is nothing wrong with updating your resume or LinkedIn page letting others know you took a break in your career,” Matas says. “Staying at home with children or elderly CONTINUED ON PAGE 47

NOW WHAT? CONTINUED FROM PAGE 45 parents is one of the toughest jobs a person will ever do. By adding this information to your resume, you are letting potential employers know what you have been doing during that time. Newhart recommends developing an online professional presence by becoming active on LinkedIn by posting articles related to your industry or joining LinkedIn groups and participating in discussions. Depending on your profession, you can also use Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to post thoughtful content. “Always make sure your LinkedIn profile is updated with the ‘open to opportunities’ designation, Newhart says. “This helps recruiters know you are willing to be contacted. Additionally, update the content on your LinkedIn profile so that it’s not just regurgitating your resume, but addressing key experiences and responsibilities succinctly is key.
Get help and establish boundaries Returning to work can be a huge adjustment for a woman, but also her family and routine. “Don’t be afraid to outsource things you did before such as grocery shopping or cookin cooking, at least temporarily as you temp acclimate to your acc For more tips new routine, n for returning to work, Newhart N visit ChicagoParent.com/ workingmoms ssays. “And be patient with p yourself. family up for success in your new role and routine.
Taking the leap Once Ping decided she was ready to start a new career as a lactation consultant, she put together a resume and got on all the job sites. She got an offer from her first interview and is now a lactation consultant at Mercy Hospital.
She says she and her family of five are adjusting to the new routine, including finding time for all the errands that creep up in life. “I know it’s a privilege to stay home and to change careers, so I’m grateful that I got to pick something that I love doing, she says. “And I keep telling myself that if this doesn’t work out, I can look for a new job. Megan Murray Elsener is a freelance writer, Chicago Parent contributor and mother of three.

ESSAY
PUBERTY POTLUCK
O
If you are dreading ‘the talk’
BY MEGAN KLEIN
ver the course of a couple of weeks, three friends asked me whether I knew of any good puberty books because they were “ready to begin the conversation” with their daughters. They were concerned that their daughters were starting to ask questions that they didn’t quite yet know how to answer.
I wasn’t sure that a book was the best way to go. That’s when it dawned on me: all of us are getting ready, in some form or another, to broach what is often framed as an awkward, uncomfortable but critically important conversation. What if, instead of starting this conversation alone, we did it together? Why not make it a puberty party? I immediately crafted an email to my fellow moms and hit send. That’s when I realized that
I had neither consulted my daughters nor paused to consider what this would actually look like in practice. Responses started coming in; some replied with an excited “Great idea!” or “We’re in!” while others replied that they didn’t think their daughter would be comfortable. One mom wrote that she loved the idea but when she brought it up at home, her daughter was “horrified” and refused to participate. Horror was not enough to

ESSAY derail this train. We set a date and dubbed the event the “Puberty Potluck 1.0.” We decided that we would all read a book with our daughters centered on the theme of girls’ experiences of puberty and use the Puberty Potluck as a space to share food and conversation about the book. The main goal was to provide our daughters with an opportunity to hear about puberty from multiple perspectives and see their moms talk openly and cooperatively about their own experiences. Another goal was to have fun and take some of the stress and anxiety out of the conversation. When I told my daughters about the plan, they, too, were horrified. My older daughter told me that she didn’t need to read a book about puberty because she already knew everything about it: “It’s when you grow breasts and your vagina gets a beard,” she said confidently. My younger daughter simply refused to both read the book and attend the potluck. Fearing that I had made the first of
many colossal mistakes related to parenting through puberty, I put off starting the book for days. Once we sat down to read it, however, the girls were hooked. There were parts I thought we could save for a later reading such as “how to insert a tampon” but the girls would have none of it. We read it cover to cover.
On the day of the potluck we set up a Question Jar on the coffee table where we would have our discussion. It provided an anonymous means for girls to ask questions if they felt uncomfortable doing so in the larger group. We also put a candle and some flowers in the middle of the round CONTINUED ON PAGE 51

Buggy BFFs ENJOY INTERACTIVITY AT FANTASTIC BUG ENCOUNTERS
T
he Field’s newest exhibit, Fantastic Bug Encounters, takes hands-on to a new level, with a chance for kids and adults to meet and touch live bugs after learning all about their unique features. It’s worth a stop at the bug zoo to talk to Field Museum scientists and touch a bug. Each one is friendly and not all can be found in the backyards of Chicago-area residents. The exhibit also uses some of the 17 million insects in the Field Museum’s collection to help visitors see how scientists have used “bug technology” to answer questions and advance human technology. “This exhibition is full of gorgeous, larger-than-life models that show what these animals look like close-up and how they’ve perfectly adapted to the world around them. Our visitors will never look at bugs the same way again,” says Jaap Hoogstraten, Field Museum exhibitions director, in a release. Don’t miss the different experiences in “pods” that teach how bugs defend their homes, fly and lay eggs, among others. Take time to build an origami butterfly, color a picture or ask questions of an expert, all built into the interactivity in the exhibit. Hillary Bird

As a sub, I will hear kids swearing at school, especially during PE games, and I always address it with them that it is not acceptable at school. Lori S.
I swear in front of my kids, but have also taught them that it is not acceptableWITH for them to CONNECTING FAMILIES use those words until they are adults. We have not had any issues at school or anywhere else. Nancy D.
◆ Honestly, I was worried at first. My SO used to swear like a sailor. He does so considerably less, but he still does on a daily basis. So we sat our youngest down and had a talk with her. We told her about the bad words and that they were “bad daddy” words that she shouldn’t use unless she’s an adult. I do slip up sometimes but some parents have no filter at all and if your kid goes to school, they will be exposed to that. I wouldn’t be shocked if they came home and swore. Nicole S.
◆ If I slip (or someone else swears a lot) I just tell my kid that only grownups are allowed to say those words, like driving, or drinking beer. But tell your SO to chill on the swearing a bit. I used to swear like a sailor. It can be done. Jessica D.
