ou’re in a multiracial household now and your son is biracial. How does race enter the discussion in the Cornette household? We just had a big talk about it last night! Discussing race can make Carter feel uncomfortable, but it’s an uncomfortable subject for everybody! As long as you talk about it with respect—respecting differences and understanding equality—then it goes a long way. Being a blend of two cultures makes him special. He’s unique and he’s different. Sometimes, as a kid, I was treated differently because I didn’t dress or talk a certain way, but I knew that if there’s anything that I experienced that I thought was racist or unfair, that I needed

to share it a teacher or with someone. And I want him to make sure to share that with us. It seems Chicago has embraced you, have you embraced Chicago? The Midwest is my roots—that’s who I am and that’s who I identify with. There’s a lot that needs to change in Chicago, but there’s a lot that I embrace. When you love something you want what’s best for it and I love this city… I’m not going anywhere. You and Shae get married this summer. Is creating a new arrangement challenging? When I first had Carter and I was a clueless single guy trying to come to grips with another life to

“...I know that to raise an ever evolving child also takes a father who understands what a father should be and what that means to a son. Shae came from a household where her parents split up but they made it work through life. She understands how important it is for Carter to have stability and for the families to be synergized. Carter’s mother has taken the lion’s share of the responsibility in doing things for him, but I know that to raise an ever-evolving child also takes a father who understands what a father should be and what that means to a son. Shae has gone out of her way to have a relationship with Carter’s mother, and Shae’s family has embraced Carter. It’s one big heap of love that’s

focused on him. Shae pushes me to be the best father I can be and that’s who she wants me to be. You feel optimistic about your new family unit and what the future holds? I want my son to know that we don’t necessarily have all the answers, but that we’re two loving people trying our best to figure things out. He’s surrounded by people who care about him and are looking out for his best interest‌ and I feel good things are going to turn out all right. Matt Boresi

INSIDE VOICE

Make your heart feel good

KEELY FLYNN

Move over, hearts n’ flowers, here are three Chicagoland picks for embracing the love of winter, of inclusiveness, and even of Sweet Home Chicago’s history. (Are you all a’flutter yet?)

‘Amplified: Chicago Blues’

Okee Dokee Brothers Concert

Chicago and the blues go together like peanut butter and jelly, and now Chicagoans have a new way to immerse themselves in this powerful music at the Chicago History Museum. This exhibit begins with tales of the Great Migration—when Southern African-Americans traveled to the urban North to make new lives—and shares the musical traditions they brought through artist spotlights and photography from the streets and clubs of the ’50s and ’60s. Ready to howl like Howlin’ Wolf or wail like Koko Taylor? Whether you’re writing and singing a song of your creation, performing in your own blues club, or designing your own album cover, it’s easy for even the youngest member of the family to be tickled pink by the blues. Ongoing, Chicago History Museum, 1601 N. Clark St., Chicago; chicagohistory.org

Believe it or not, there are those among us who actually revel in these blustery, occasionally blizzardy months. Justin Lansing and Joe Mailander—better known as the Grammy-winning Okee Dokee Brothers—are two such people. The childhood friends began writing music together in high school. “Winterland” is their latest natureloving Americana folk album for the whole fam, and it celebrates the coziest (and coolest) things during this brisk, beautiful season.

Chicago History Museum

So what do these pals like best about winter? Justin likes the silence of a snowy walk in the woods, and Joe digs hitting a winter sauna and then rolling in the snow or jumping through a frozen lake. (“Then back to the sauna—quick! So invigorating.”) Mark their Chicagoland concert on your calendar—and then get ready to dance, sing and make some warm winter memories of your own. Feb. 16, two shows, North Shore Center for the Performing Arts, 9501 Skokie Blvd., Skokie; okeedokee.org

X-Marks the Spot: An X-Tra Sensory Xperience’ Chicago Children’s Theatre often pushes the boundaries of physicality in really cool ways, but in ‘X-Marks the Spot,’ you won’t believe your eyes. (You may not even need ‘em.) Inspired and informed by Co-Founder and Artistic Director Jacqueline Russell’s work with visually impaired CPS students, this multi-sensory performance invites everyone to use hearing, speech, touch, scent and even taste to experience this work together. It’s more than a sensory exercise, however; loosely based on Edith Nesbit’s Victorian-era “Five Children and It,” this is definitely an adventure story

for the whole family and, especially given CCT’s reputation of inclusivity for all audience members, it’s also an opportunity to understand how live theater is experienced by visually impaired patrons. (Food for thought!) Through Feb. 24, The Station, 100 S. Racine St., Chicago; chicagochildrenstheatre.org

Your handy modern guide to camp registration Wait, what? It’s February and you haven’t signed your child up for all their summer camps yet? Is this your first child? Or did you just move here from some languidly paced pastoral region of the country? MATT BORESI

Ohhh… “winter was really busy and camp registration just got away from you”? (Sorry, my daughter Viva isn’t laughing at you, she just thought of something funny.) You’d better get to your computer right now or come June your kid is going to be sitting ILLUSTRATION BY STEPHEN SCHUDLICH in your office next to your desk every day for three months watching people open toys on YouTube. So, how does one know which camps to choose? Well, it’s simple really: First, take note of your child’s interests, then partially ignore them. It’s important they follow their passion, but over-saturation in passion is the enemy of well-roundedness. By the end of the summer Viva will be able to make a mosaic while coding wearing tap shoes on horseback across a soccer field. I’ve told her we’re choosing camps for her that are a mix of things she already enjoys and things she really ought to enjoy but hasn’t been forced to do enough yet. Now, make sure you sign up for camps in which they already have friends so they won’t be scared—but not too many old friends or they won’t make new friends. Viva always keeps a couple of starter friends around for social kindling. Finally, make sure that the number of days the camps run aren’t too few or your child won’t be immersed enough in the subject, but not too many or they’ll choke on it and lose interest. And don’t let the day be too long or they’ll feel abandoned but don’t let the day be too short or their attention span won’t stretch. Ideally, several three-quarter-day two-and-a-half-week camps should do the trick. With two pre-established friends at each with rotating topics across disciplines. Oh, and make sure there’s swimming. That’s just a safety thing. What are you waiting for? Sign up for camps! Viva Camp. Viva Viva. Viva Daddy.

FAILING WITH GUSTO

The Eighties. WTF.

MARIANNE WALSH

The year was 1984. I went over to my friend’s house to check out the hot, new thing: cable television. For the very low cost of $30 per month, people could watch TV with NO COMMERCIALS. The audacity. The bravery. The brilliance. Sign me up!

Unfortunately, I was only making $1.50 an hour babysitting, and there was no chance my parents would ever pay for such a luxury. So I kept going over to my friend’s basement. At first, we were all about the videos. Van Halen. Cyndi Lauper. Michael Jackson. I was definitely going to marry Eddie Van Halen. Then we discovered the MOVIES. “Porky’s.” “Animal House.” “Revenge of the Nerds.” In hindsight, our selections were far from appropriate for a pair of 11-year-old girls. But few parents back then were paying attention because of a historic reliance on network television to filter out such smut. Today’s world would suggest that such exposure would damage us for life. We’d marry misogynists. We’d probably do drugs. Arrest records were inevitable. Instead, I would argue these experiences are responsible for a certain appreciation of the absurd. It’s why I love “Seinfeld.” Recently, I spotted one of these films (edited) on television. My high school son wandered into the room and watched “Revenge of the Nerds” with Me. He could not stop laughing at how completely non-PC the movie was. “Oh my God, it was anything goes in the ’80s, wasn’t it?” I started getting flustered, even the edited version was raunchier than I remembered. “Uh…this stuff was wrong then…uh…drugs are bad…. uh don’t film people naked….” “Relax, mom. It’s a movie, not a morality lesson.” And there it was. As I kid, I understood the characters in these films were ridiculous and laughable. I knew what they did was wrong. While I don’t condone most 11-year-olds watching these flicks, I did realize something important: Parenting dictates how a lot of movies are received. But we’ll all be watching “The Sound of the Music” next week. Just in case.

YOU

Love the person who deserves it the most

S

BY CHERYL LEAHY

ince February is unequivocally the month of love, it is a perfect time to focus on the person in your life who needs love the most: yourself. Self-love is the basis for healthy, happy relationships, a more positive outlook and compassion. So grab your favorite feel-good snack or sip and get ready to feel the love!

Snooze social media Social media can have many benefits—connecting with those who you might not otherwise meet, sharing experiences and receiving support from like-minded people. On the other hand,

Gratitude journal jotting With all of the day-to-day issues that bog you down, it can be a struggle to realize that yes, there are some incredible things in your life. A gratitude journal can help you love what you have, not lust for what you don’t. Here are a few prompts to get you started: u What is one relationship that has helped you learn something about yourself? u What are you better at now than you were previously? u What did you see/smell/touch/hear/ feel that was good? u What routines are you grateful for?

Forgiveness THIS is the toughest one of them all, but not attempting to forgive others or yourself can interfere with that selflove thing you are trying to accomplish. Although some transgressions by others can seem unforgivable, the simple act of being open to forgiving them is a huge step. Simply saying, “I don’t know how I can forgive, but I want to try” is a step in the right direction. One of the biggest a-ha moments I had recently was this: Hurt people hurt

social media can create inner turmoil with FOMO, filters and a false sense of fulfillment. All of these issues interfere with our ability to truly love who we are and how we connect with others. How do we combat this? Step off social media and into true human connection. Make a lunch date with someone you find fascinating. Grab coffee with a confidante to hash out a particular problem. Go for cocktails with that friend you lost touch with. Don’t do it simply for the ‘gram— shut all notifications off, don’t feel the need to snap a selfie, just revel in real life for a bit.

people. Once I understood that, it was easier for me to see that their actions stemmed from an internal struggle. As for forgiving yourself (all of those shoulda, woulda, coulda moments), try to see what occurred through your best friend’s eyes. What would you tell them? Also, what can you learn from your mistake? Every mistake we make can be a learning experience, no matter how painful or uncomfortable it may be. Own up to your mistake, but don’t let it define you or label you for life.

This 2.7-mile trail named for the first three numbers in every Chicago zip code quickly became a favorite destination for families both on foot, bike and scooters. This transformed elevated rail is a great way to explore the Humboldt Park, Bucktown and Wicker Park neighborhoods, featuring art installations, green space and family-friendly events.

Chicago hot dogs are famous, and everyone has their favorite spot. We’re not trying to start a debate, but the Portillo’s at Clark and Ontario makes the list because it is decorated with many items from the original Chicago Stadium, including the original Chicago Blackhawks 1938 Stanley Cup banner. Also, the amazing chocolate cake brings families together. 100 W. Ontario St., Chicago

North Park Nature Center Chicago is, of course, very urban, but there are pockets of nature where it’s easy to forget that, and North

We admit Chicago is a little tougher to love in the cold winter months, but chase the cold away with a trip to the toasty-warm Garfield Park Conservatory, one of the nation’s largest. The Elizabeth Morse Genius Children’s Garden is a great indoor option no matter what the weather is, and Wild Wednesdays are fun for families, too. 300 N. Central Park Ave., Chicago

Chicago Riverwalk This 1.25-mile path is open year-round, and you can check out the small McCormick Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum. However, the Riverwalk shines brightest in the warmer months when cafes and docks are open, art installations are on display and Chicago is ready to play.

Three teens on the spectrum

What we can learn about autism by simply asking

W

BY JENNIFER WHEELER

hen my oldest son turned 16 this year, there was no trip to the DMV for his driver’s license. When my 14-year-old son entered high school this year, there were no homecoming pictures to post on social media. And, when my youngest son became a teen just last month, there was no one to invite to his party. So far, my fellas don’t seem to care about being typical teens who enjoy driving, dates and sports. But they are typical teens in other important ways. My youngest doesn’t think people can tell he has autism, but he wishes aloud that things were easier for his brother. My oldest doesn’t think he has it and denies being impacted by it. (He is.) While other teens are college-bound, he’s focused on basic vocational goals and fundamental life skills. I’m OK with that and so is he. “I don’t want to drive, I’m not interested in dating and sports aren’t my thing. I like drawing, and hanging out with my brothers, and playing video games,” he told me. His “differences” don’t seem that different, especially not to him.

But my 14-year-old had much to say about differences. What he told me gives us a deeper insight into the mind of a teen with autism. “Because I have autism, I think I’m different from other teens in a lot of ways. I love video games, so I could hang out with kids who like technology. But I don’t enjoy some of the stuff that other teens do, like sports and parties. “I enjoy being around the kids at my high school, but I never get invited to do anything with them. I think it’s because I don’t know how to start a conversation with them, and because I can’t relate to some of the things that interest them. I like current events, politics and economics and also science, math and llamas. Other teens like movies and music instead, and so I

don’t think they want to socialize with me. I’m not sure I’d even know what to do if other teens asked me to hang out, unless we were playing video games or talking about how much we hate Donald Trump. “I do respect other teens who have different opinions than I do, I just don’t know how to continue a conversation with them when our perspectives aren’t the same. “But I like the kids in my school who are smart and funny and who stick up for others; I feel I have a lot in common with them. But many of them are looking for love, and I’m not. I want relationships, but not the romantic kind. It’s more important for me to be valued for my work, and for being kind and funny. But others can’t see those things about me. I wish other kids knew I was funny, because I see the benefit of being friends. “I want some help making friends. I sit with some kids at lunch, but they are my brother’s friends. It would be nice to have my own friends, too, but I don’t know how to get them. “Everyone is in a rush to grow up, but I’m worried I won’t be ready. I feel like there is too much to learn to be independent; I’m learning a lot academically, but I don’t think I will know everything I need to know if I am going to live on my own after high school. “I think I’m worried about a job while other teens are worried about college, but not about what comes after college. I want to be a commentator on CNN about politics and economics, and I’m not sure how to get there. I don’t know what kind of career is good for people with autism who have a hard time expressing themselves. “For now, I like being a teenager because I don’t have any of the responsibilities I’ll have when I’m an adult, but I also don’t have the freedom I felt just being a kid. I know I’ll be successful because I work hard and I like school, but I also think that I might be lonely without friends. If I didn’t have my brothers, I don’t know who I’d hang out with. I don’t mind being alone, but I don’t like feeling lonely.” And so, despite all of the ways having autism makes my middle son feel different from other teens, it seems to me he feels the same way many of them do sometimes: lonely.

A camping they will go How to gauge your child’s readiness for overnight camp

F

BY LORI ORLINSKY or many kids, sleepaway camp is an annual rite of passage. For a few weeks, they trade in their structured summers at home for a taste of freedom filled with new friends, cookouts, campfires, singalongs and lifelong memories. While most overnight camps welcome kids as young as 6, how do you know if your child is ready to go? Sending them to overnight camp is a big decision that requires having a level of comfort with an endless list of questions to which you may not know the answers. Will my child make friends? What if they get homesick? Will they like the food? Since what works for one child might not be the best fit for another, we asked some experts—camp directors, mental health professionals and parents—for advice.

Did your child attend day camp? If your child loves day camp and begins to talk about overnight camp, this is a good indicator they may be ready for the next phase of camp. Beth Miller, director of city day camping for the JCC Chicago, says that day camps begin the process of teaching kids how to be independent. “At day camp, kids learn everything from how to change in a locker room to how to seek help from a counselor or friend,” she says. “Camp is good practice for letting kids make decisions for themselves and discovering a little more about who they are.”

Has your child spent the night away from home? Most experts agree that a good separation test is a first sleepover, or having your child stay the night at grandma and grandpa’s. Provide the assurance that everything will be fine and encourage independence, but offer the option to call you at 3 a.m. if they need comforting or a pick up.

Is your child physically ready? Can your child complete basic tasks like bathing, self-dressing and brushing their teeth and washing their face? While counselors are your child’s caretakers at overnight camp, they are there to remind and coach them to complete these tasks, not do it for them. If you are thinking about sending your child to camp but they have not quite mastered these skills, they can be good activities to work towards throughout the year.

Can you test the waters? Many camps offer the opportunity to ease into the overnight experience with camp preview days, where kids can experience camp in session to see what it looks like. Families can walk through the facilities, participate in activities and speak with staff and current campers. There are also a number of shorter duration sleep-away camps (three to five nights) designed to introduce firsttime campers to the concept of being away from home, with the hope that they’ll feel comfortable and return for a longer stay the following summer. “My daughter spent her best summers at camp, and I attribute that to the fact we first sent her to a three-day, four-night overnight camp to try first,” says mom Lindsay Bertoncini. “There, my daughter became comfortable with the facility and the idea of being away from home.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 26

Do your research

Prepare your child for homesickness

With endless options for overnight camp, including sports, wilderness, the arts, etc., finding the right camp for your child can be a daunting task. The American Camp Association is a great place to start. It provides a database of ACA accredited camps that can be searched by age, interest, location, session duration, housing structure and more. “I advise parents to call the camp they are interested in, and ask the staff every question that they can think of,” says Colette Marquardt, executive director of the American Camp Association Illinois. “I also see value in attending open houses and talking to parent references that the camp can provide.”

Ninety-seven percent of first-time campers will experience some level of homesickness. The vast majority are mild and tend to resolve within a few days or weeks, says Michael Thompson, Ph.D., a renowned child psychologist and author of Homesick and Happy: How Time Away from Parents Can Help a Child Grow. Once parents have made the concrete decision that a child is physically and emotionally ready for camp, Thompson advises gradually broaching the topic of being homesick. “Children don’t want advice from their parents,” says Thompson. “Ask them what a comfort to them would be if they missed home. Is it a teddy bear? Is it talking to a counselor or the camp director? Empower your child to hear themselves coming up with their own coping strategies.”

Let your camper be an active participant From day one when the subject of overnight camp is brought up, involve your child. Let them be a part of the camp selection process so they can

feel a sense of ownership and pride about their upcoming experience. Continue to build up the excitement for camp by finding things you and your camper can do together, such as shopping for camp supplies or packing their trunk.

“Kids often take a cue from their parents,” Marquardt says. “If you’re nervous, that’s how they’ll be. But if you talk about it as a positive experience and an adventure, kids will usually attach on to that belief.” Thompson agrees that supporting the decision to send a child to camp is the best thing an anxious parent can do for their child. “If you are going to do it, make sure to convey the belief to your child that he or she can do it,” he says. “Kids often lessen parents’ anxiety by being capable.” Lori Orlinsky is a Chicago mom of two little girls.

A

fuzzy seating area, interactive video screens and a chance to dance with a mascot are all a part of the Chicago area’s newest children’s museum. The Mascot Hall of Fame, which opened Dec. 26 in Whiting, Ind., was designed with kids in mind. What was once an online-only hall to induct sports mascots like The Famous Chicken of San Diego and the Phillie Phanatic became a brick-and-mortar building thanks to the team in Whiting. Located within blocks of Lake Michigan, the building houses three floors of interactivity—with the third floor designed as a rental space for birthday parties and events.

Kids are encouraged to follow the “Mascot University” curriculum and have their report cards stamped at the various activities. Mascot students can try their hand at shooting a virtual T-shirt cannon or play with soft baseballs, hockey pucks and footballs on an enclosed court. Parents can brush up on their mascot history, and challenge their kids to a game of matching the mascot to its home state. (Those in need of a rest can sit in the Parent’s Penalty Box, complete with a lounge chair and cup holder.) Schools and educational groups are a target of the hall, which designed its exhibits with a focus on STEAM learning, healthy eating and physical education. Students will learn how a mascot is
