The World’s Largest Catsup Bottle 800 S. Morrison Ave., Collinsville If you’re visiting Cahokia Mounds, you’re also near a very different kind of monument—the “World’s Largest Catsup bottle,” or what is really the Brooks Water Tower painted to look like a catsup bottle. (It’s trademarked with the spelling “catsup” but if you prefer “ketchup,” no judgment here). While it’s not exactly archaeologically significant, it’s pretty exciting for some condiment lovers. Cahokia Mounds 30 Ramey St., Collinsville Grounds open daily dawn to dusk, Interpretive Center open Wednesday-Sunday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Many, many centuries before Illinois was a state, it was home to the most sophisticated prehistoric native civilization north of Mexico. Cahokia was larger than London in 1250 AD. You can explore the remaining mounds and examine artifacts at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, the only UNESCO World Heritage site in the Midwest. Dozens of mounds remain, including Monks Mound, which at 100 feet high is the largest earthwork in North America. You can climb the steps to the top. Seeing the Gateway Arch in St. Louis is a fascinating juxtaposition of civilizations for the adults. For the kids, it’s just a cool view. The free Interpretive Center offers exhibits and information on Mississippian culture and explains archaeological and anthropological research conducted at the site. CO N T I N U E D O N PAG E 7

hen it’s time to celebrate a milestone birthday, the state of Illinois holds back very little.
In December, Illinois will mark its 200th birthday, accepted as the 21st state on Dec. 3, 1818. The state has held cake parties and festivities throughout the year, and there’s still time to join the party.
Bicentennial Passport Fifty-six hot spots in Illinois are the places to go to learn about 200 years of history. By visiting some of these spots, guests can have a “passport” stamped to turn in for prizes like stickers or a free ride on the I&M Canal (pick up a passport at one of the passport stops). In Chicago and the surrounding counties, there are 13 locations to have a passport stamped. Visit historical sites like Pullman, Field Museum, the Chicago Maritime Museum and the Old Joliet Prison to pick up stamps in a short commute. If you start too late to win a prize—passports must be mailed by Dec. 3—you can still share your story of passport glory on social media with the hashtag #ILProudPassport. First capitals Springfield is the state’s capital now, but it wasn’t always high on Illinoisans’ list of prime locations for the seat of government. In 1818, Kaskaskia, then home to nearly 7,000 citizens on the Mississippi River, was named the state’s capital. It lasted a year, before moving to Vandalia in 1819 and then Springfield in 1839. Flooding on the river later reduced Kaskaskia’s population to 14. Kaskaskia is the home to the “Liberty Bell of the West,” a church bell donated by French King Louis XV in 1741 and rung on July 4, 1778, when American forces overtook the French-controlled settlements on the river. The bell is part of the Bicentennial celebrations as the Daughters of the American Revolution will dedicate a monument in Chester to the bell. Vandalia is still the home to an extravagant state capitol building, which holds tours, and was built in 1836. Before Springfield took the ChicagoParent.com

GOING PLACES “capital” moniker—thanks in part to spry representative Abe Lincoln wanting to move the grounds—Vandalia was the site of state lawmaking. If you miss fall festivities, head to see the capitol in early December, when the building is decked in its 1830s holiday finest.

Bicentennial Plaza Bicentennial Plaza is a creation in partnership with the state’s real estate agents who helped create a walkway from Abraham Lincoln’s Home to the Illinois Governor’s Mansion and state capitol. Look for panels showcasing the people who have lived and worked in the capital city. The plaza was designed and dedicated to Lincoln’s vision for the country and its equality. 428 S. Signature event The big birthday bash slated for Dec. 3 will stay in Chicago. With Illinois dignitaries from Buddy Guy to Jackie Joyner-Kersee to the Chicago Bears slated to attend and commemorate, the state will honor those who have been “Born, Built and Grown” in Illinois. Tickets start at $50, and the program is expected to mix musical performances, live entertainment, artists of different generations and historical video to honor the state’s birthday. A presentation of “Chicago—The City of Champions” will highlight the city’s professional sports teams. United Center, 1901 W. Madison, Chicago ChicagoParent.com

Big things in Casey Casey, in east-central Illinois just off I-70, calls itself a small town full of big things. It’s home to a lot of Guinness World Record winners, including the world’s largest rocking chair, golf tee, wooden shoes and knitting needles, which have actually been used to knit. Kids can stand inside the world’s largest mail box, a 32-foot-tall structure. It’s fully functional, and the flag even goes up, but don’t worry, the Postal Service doesn’t ship children these days. Other giant items found around town that provide interactive fun include the world’s largest wind chimes that you can ring and the gigantic bird cage.
Metropolis One town in Illinois is home to a superhero. On June 9, 1972, the Illinois House of Representatives officially proclaimed that Metropolis, a town in southern Illinois along the Ohio River, was the hometown of Superman. Visitors learn pretty quickly that they’re serious about Superman here, as evidenced by the 15-foottall statue of him in town, the Super Museum and the fact that the newspaper is named The Planet. There’s a Superman Celebration held annually in June, but really, Metropolis pays homage to the superhero who’s faster than a speeding bullet every day. CO N T I N U E D O N PAG E 8

aco Tuesday, or any day of the week, is a great day to sink your teeth into some tasty tacos. With so many fantastic taco joints in Chicago, though, it can be hard to choose where to go with your brood. So here is a tour of some new, authentic and fun taquerias to visit with kids. Let the fiesta in your mouth begin!
MOST RECOMMENDED
Big Star Locations: Wicker Park & Wrigleyville When I ask Chicagoans where to go for tacos with little ones in tow, the top reco is Big Star. Both the Wicker Park and Wrigleyville locations are super chill, colorful and casual. 10 Fall 2018 • goingplaces
CPGP0918_10.indd 1
The new Wrigleyville location is right across the street from the ballpark and the Wicker Park location is housed in a 1940s gas station with a huge outdoor patio. Go early for less wait. Let’s talk tacos. Executive Chef Paul Kahan designed a Mexican street food-inspired menu. Many say the tacos are tiny but pack a flavorful punch. Taco de Panza (pork belly) and Taco Al Pastor (pork shoulder with grilled pineapple) are the most popular. Pescado (fried fish) and Papas con Rajas (potatoes) are great choices, too.
QUICK TREAT
XOCO Location: River North Pronounced “SHO-ko” and translated to “little sister,” this quick-service café by Rick and Deann Bayless offers bold flavors and convenient dining morning through night. Short ribs, carnitas, chicken tinga and red chile vegetable tacos are offered, along with Mexican sandwiches, salads, snacks, hearty soups and pastries. The runaway hit here is the bean-to-cup chocolate drinks. I had a Mint Chocolate that was ChicagoParent.com

LOW-KEY
The Taco Joint
Locations: Lincoln Park, North Bridge, River North The casual Taco Joint restaurants in Lincoln Park and River North offer happy hour specials weekdays 4-6 p.m. that include $2 tacos. When at the Shops of North Bridge, grab a quick bite from its location on the fourth floor. Barbacoa (braised beef ), Yucatan Pulled Pork and Al Pastor are the most-ordered tacos. Al Pastor is normally pork, but theirs is slow-cooked chicken and it’s spicy good. The Shops at North Bridge location also serves Cauliflower Al Pastor. Chunks of adobo-roasted cauliflower are in a tangy sauce with grilled pineapple, fresh onions and cilantro on top, providing an interesting vegetarian option.
Nugget and close to Blue Line and Metra trains, went with the CTA theme and ran with it! The train ambiance and transit authority memorabilia is awesome. The menu is a combination of traditional and contemporary dishes. The fresh fish and shrimp tacos with Cajun seasoning are complemented with crunchy jalapeno coleslaw and cilantro aioli. Tinga Chicken, pulled chicken in a chipotle adobo sauce, is quite popular. Even picky kids can be pleased with simplified dishes here. CO N T I N U E D O N PAG E 1 3

Location: Pilsen You can’t go on a taco tour without visiting Pilsen, a vibrant Mexican-American community on Chicago’s West Side. The restaurant name translates to “five radishes” and refers to the chef, Alfonso Sotelo, (a Rick Bayless protégé), and his four brothers who used to sell radishes at a market in Mexico. The inside vibe is relaxed, and a huge park with a zipline swing and the National Museum of Mexican Art are down the street. Outside the restaurant and through Pilsen, check out the beautiful, artistic murals. While the other mouthwatering options on the menu could overshadow the seven taco choices, make sure to order tacos for the homemade tortillas and well-seasoned meats. It’s not often that you see Pibil on a menu (slow roasted pork in an aromatic and colorful sauce of oranges and annatto). Vegetarians love the chunky Roasted Vegetable taco. There are a few children’s choices on the menu, but it’s best if kids are adventurous and up for trying new things here. The staff is very welcoming and incredibly accommodating. They make a fresh flavored water of the day and it is fantastic. ChicagoParent.com

f you’re looking to connect as a family and make some memories together, a quick getaway is a wonderful way to do both. You don’t have to spend lots of time traveling— there are some fantastic destinations that are just a few hours from Chicago and offer a break from the routine with lots of family-friendly fun.
Want to stay close to home but feel far away? Visit New Buffalo, Mich. You don’t have to go far to experience the feel of a relaxed, beach-front resort town when you visit Harbor Country in the southeast corner of Michigan. Chicagoans can drive there in less than 90 minutes (without traffic). If you want to ditch your worries and your car, take Amtrak, the stop is within walking distance of the beach. There are some fun restaurants, and don’t miss a trip to Oinks for ice cream.
Need a change of scene?
Head to Hamilton County, Ind. Just north of Indianapolis and about three hours from Chicago is Hamilton County, Ind., home to lots of fun options for families. Train lovers should hop aboard the Nickel Plate Express, which operates weekend trips on a 12-mile track between Noblesville and Atlanta. In the fall, little ones will love the Pumpkin Express and older kids will get a kick out of the evening Ghost Express. Bring your bikes or rent them for $3/hour from bike share stations in Carmel or Westfield and ride along the Monon Trail, a scenic 25-mile rails-to-trails paved route that runs through some local charming towns. Conner Prairie is a Smithsonian-affiliated living history museum with interactive, hands-on experiences ranging from a four-story treehouse to livestock to a hot air balloon. If time allows, you’re close to the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, which has a new exhibit on the science behind Ripley’s Believe It or Not! opening Oct. 6.

Up for an urban adventure? Make your way to Milwaukee, Wis. Milwaukee isn’t far, but has a unique flavor all its own. Get a literal taste of it with a trip to the Public Market, which features a wide array of local vendors, including ones offering dairy delicacies and Wisconsin-shaped cookies. Kids can pick their favorite flavor of soda on a tour of the Sprecher Brewing Company, which offers soda samples for all and beer samples for adults. The Milwaukee Public Museum and the Milwaukee Art Museum are very kid-friendly. Discovery World is full of interactive exhibits exploring technology and science, including that behind the Great Lakes. Milwaukee is home to the only Harley-Davidson museum. Kids can visit the Imagination Station, try on kid-size leather jackets and create their own motorcycle at the Build-A-Bike station.
Craving together time? Hit the road for Dubuque, Iowa You’ve likely heard of Galena, but have you met its friendly neighbor just over the Mississippi River? Iowa’s oldest town, Dubuque, offers plenty of family-friendly fun. From a sunset dinner cruise on American Lady Yacht Cruises to a PB&J burger at 1st and Main, it’s a perfect spot no matter what the season.

Don’t miss exploring Crystal Lake Cave, a 2-million-year-old mineral cave filled with stalactites and stalagmites. Another must is visiting the Field of Dreams movie site in Dyersville, about 30 minutes west. Baseball fan or not—it’s a memorable experience for sure!
Craving a slower pace? Take off to Door County, Wis. If you ask families in the Chicago area for their favorite weekend destination, many say Door County. The small towns on the peninsula recall a time when life was simpler, making it the perfect location to escape the everyday craziness. In the autumn it’s a bit quieter than in warmer months but every bit as colorful, claiming to have the best fall foliage in Wisconsin. Cheryl Eugenio contributed to this story.

ith all the mac n’ cheese making, the laundry folding (does it EVER end?) and the constant carpooling, it is evident that moms need a break. Not just an hour or two at the spa or gym, either. What moms need is at least a FULL 24 hours away, without having to clean a sippy cup, so that they can get the chance to fill their proverbial cup. Before you start feeling guilty, call up your mom squad and plan your girls’ getaway weekend! These three destinations are close enough so that you can get home in case of emergency but also so fun and relaxing you may as well be a world away from your typical “mom life.”

Whether you enjoy a relaxing day soaking up the sunshine at Oval Beach, strolling through the quaint shops on Butler Street or trying local wines at Fenn Valley Winery, you will return home rested and rejuvenated.
Galena After 10 minutes of meandering through Galena, you will understand why it is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the Midwest. The rolling hills and breathtaking views add to its small town charm and will encourage even the busiest mom to slow down and savor the little things. There are many wineries and tasting rooms to enjoy local grape varietals and you can even stay

here is always a chorus of nts every cries and complaints ools Labor Day when pools n. close for the season. But YOU can be thee hero and end all of the whining byy packing up the car and heading north to the Wisconsin Dells to indulge your family’s water park hs. cravings, even in the colder months. ark One could argue that the Waterpark Capital of the World is even MOREE enjoyonths. able during the fall and winter months. Why?
There are fewer crowds to deal with You know that feeling when you are standing at the entrance of a lazy river and waiting waitin (and waiting… and waiting) waitin for an empty inner ttube to come around? arou Well, you do have to deal don’t w annoyances with l that when like y visit the you Dells during the o season. Less off c crowds means sh shorter lines, more tab and chairs to tables set up u camp inside the wat water parks, less noisy hallw hallways at bedtime… and d a much h more peaceful weekend away.
You get a bigger bang for your buck You can score major discounts on Groupon and Living Social so that you can stay in much more expansive and luxurious lodging than you ever thought possible. The massive Kalahari can be pricey during the high season, but you can get a great deal while other families are at home raking leaves and building snowmen. You can even treat yourself to a tropical drink poolside and imagine that you are in the tropics minus the expensive plane flight. 20 Fall 2018 • goingplaces

You never have to go outside Yes, that’s right, you can spend your entire time in the Wisconsin Dells indoors if you want to. While Mother Nature rears her ugly head, you can float along a lazy river without a care in the world or a snow boot to be seen. One tip about the hallways, though: They are CHILLY! Pack bath robes to keep your kids snug and warm when you travel between your hotel room and the water parks. There is ample indoor and outdoor fun Clearly water parks are the main focus of the Wisconsin Dells, but don’t forget about the arcades, indoor amusement parks, mini golf courses, trampoline parks…the list goes on and on. MagiQuest at Great Wolf Lodge is a huge hit with those who want to play an interactive game with

Easy cruising with
T
BY AMANDA SIMKIN
he thought of going on a Disney cruise can be a bit nerve wracking—the planning, the packing, the price tag! But by following these tips and giving into the magic of Disney, your family will enjoy smooth sailing no matter what the seas might bring.
Timing is everything For the best rates, plan your cruise during “low season” and avoid cruising during school breaks (the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day is the most expensive time to sail). When choosing a cruise, think about how often you want to disembark and explore. A sure sweet spot? A five-day cruise with two days at sea and two days at ports. Finally, plan to fly to your Disney Cruise departure port the day before your cruise sets sail. That way you won’t have to worry about flight delays or cancellations and you can get into vacation mode before you even board your ship.
Pack these special extra Each and every parent knows that you need to have a fully packed diaper bag anytime you leave home with kids in tow. Other than typical clothes, swimsuits, and toiletries, you really don’t need to pack too much for your Disney cruise. 22 Fall 2018 • goingplaces

There are, however, some special extras. Some families don customized matching shirts to celebrate their Disney cruise. Not into personalized gear? Simply bring a tee promoting your favorite Disney character—and don’t forget that Marvel and Star Wars are part of the Disney family! Pirate night is the quintessential dress-up party on each and every Disney cruise. Save your money and buy pirate gear (including light up sticks) before you leave home. Adults are encouraged to dress up, too! Lastly, look into Disney magnets to decorate your stateroom door. While not necessary, it is a fun way to show off your family’s personality and of course, find your room amidst the identical doors on the massive ship.
Meet the characters One of the advantages of a Disney Cruise is that there are constant opportunities to meet characters throughout your vacation. While some character “meet and greets” require a reservation ticket such as the Princess gathering and character breakfasts (select cruises only), most do not. Simply check the
“Character Encounters” listing for the day using your Navigator app and then head out to meet your favorite superhero, princess or original Disney character. Characters also visit the kids’ clubs throughout your trip. There are also many impromptu photo opps so keep your camera handy. CO N T I N U E D O N PAG E 2 4

Use the child care While Disney cruises are geared towards families making magical memories, they are also designed to give parents a break. There is complimentary childcare for guests over 3 so full of fun activities that your kids won’t even notice that you are gone. One tip: Sign up for the Dine and Play program so that your little diners are served their meal first and whisked off to play while you enjoy some leisurely adult time.
The port you don’t want to miss Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island in the Bahamas, is the piece de resistance of any Caribbean Disney cruise. This immaculate, gorgeous island
is only open to guests on your cruise, so you can stretch out on the white, sandy beaches and enjoy a delicious barbecue buffet. Send the kids off to have their own fun at
Scuttle’s Cove while you enjoy the adults-only beach. With ample beach chairs and hammocks, water slides, and snorkeling you will never want to leave.

THE (NEW)
HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH
First step: The flight Follow our footsteps Finnair recently extended its seasonal non-stop service between Chicago and Finland (they also have a free stopover plan, so you can hop over to other European countries if you have the time), and we finally found our unicorn airline. In the Finnair lounge, there’s a separate kids’ lounge, with video games and toys. On board, we stopped counting the number of times they offered us ice cream. We couldn’t love this airline more.
M
BY DANIELLE BRAFF
ove over, Disney, there’s a new happy destination, and it contains trolls, not mice. Finland was recently ranked the happiest spot in the world by a United Nations report—and a recent trip to this Nordic destination proved to us that it’s also an ideal vacation spot for families. Here are your seven steps to happy.
Second step: Saunas Follow our footsteps In Finland, the word “sauna” is a verb: Did you sauna today yet? There are 5 million people in Finland, and there are more than 2 million saunas. Stay in them until you can’t bare it any longer (we lasted about eight minutes) and then run outside and into the sea. Yes, that would be the frozen, icy Baltic Sea. Our guide told us that the first time, we’d be too scared to enjoy it. By the third time, we’d love it. She was right. It’s an experience you need to try. There’s no age limit to sauna, and they actually embrace children in there.
Third step: Moomin trolls
Fourth step: Museums
Follow our footsteps Ask any kid in Finland and they’ll explain the story of the troll family from the comic series by artist Tove Jansson. Why these adorable, progressive trolls never became popular in the U.S. is beyond me. But a visit to the Moomin museum is a must—and when you’re done, you, too, will be part of the Moomin cult following.
Follow our footsteps Museums aren’t always first on a child’s vacation wishlist, but in Finland, the curators make them incredibly kid-friendly and accessible. At the Timo Sarpaneva exhibit at the Helsinki Design museum, for example, below every glassblown sculpture is a video of how that structure was created. Throughout the museum, there are video rooms so you can sit and watch the glass blowing techniques. We were just as transfixed as the kids.

Fifth step: Iittala design center Follow our footsteps A design center doesn’t scream “This is the best vacation ever,” to my kids. But a design center where one-third of the designs are for kids? They’re hooked. Iittala is a Scandinavian design from Finland, and the philosophy is similar to the mindset of Finland in general: it should be beautiful yet functional and something that everyone can afford. So even though the Ittalia brand is exquisite, most people use their dishes as their everyday dishes. The kids’ cups have Moomins on them doing all sorts of silly things.
Seventh step: Amusement park and a visit to Doghill
Follow our footsteps A 1 1/2-hour train trip from Helsinki lands you in Tampere (totally worth a day trip or an overnight stay), where there’s an entire children’s area (open seasonally). First, stop at Särkänniemi, which is Finland’s only amusement park. It has roller coasters, a zoo and an observation tower with a restaurant on top that has some of the best food we tried in Finland. But our favorite part: Doghill, an entire fairytale town based on the children’s book stories by Mauri Kunnas.
Sixth step: Salmiakki Follow our footsteps Every country has its must-try foods, and in Finland, it’s salmiakki. They describe it as “salty licorice,” but it tasted like regular black licorice to us. You can find it in so many forms: regular black licorice, chocolate-covered black licorice, licorice creme brûlée, licorice tea... You can bet we tried them all, and used them as bribes.

hree hundred days of warm sunshine and palm trees swaying on gorgeous public beaches may sound like a dream, but they are all key parts of the relaxed culture you’ll find on Costa del Sol in southern Spain.
The clean, walkable city of Malaga is rising as a prominent tourist destination. Cloaked by mountains that shield it from weather and featuring a gorgeous harbor, this city offers fantastic international family getaways. As the birthplace of Pablo Picasso and Antonio Banderas, there are touch points you can relate to, yet so many new experiences to explore.
Food Taste fresh seafood roasted in overturned metal boats and dabble in dishes like paella and adobo, vinegarmarinated fish. Taste exotic fruits, like custard apples or fresh fish at the Atarazanas Market. Spend an afternoon with the Spanish Food Sherpas for the low-down on the cuisine and culture with quick intros to the best places to go. 28 Fall 2018 • goingplaces

Stay Stay at the Gran Hotel Miramar, a luxurious fivestar property with mesmerizing Mediterranean views, and you must try luxury hotel, Parador. For much lower prices than you would probably imagine, you experience a historic building renovated to modern accommodations, with postcard-worthy backdrops. Roman ruins, the Alcazaba fortress and El Teatro Romano, the oldest monument in Malaga city, are just a few of the experiences. The dolmens in nearby Antequera are 5,000-year-old megalithic structures. The prehistoric burial chambers are some of the largest and most complete in Europe. Situated by the Pena de los Enamorados (Lover’s Leap), a mountain with the profile of an Indian man’s face and home to a tragic legend similar to Romeo and Juliet, there will soon be a new museum to enjoy here also. While in Antequera, try more than 50 flavors of traditional Spanish pastries at La Antequerana and lunch under a bullring at Indulto Restaurant. Bullfighting season runs mid-May to October. h, the family vacation. You’ve done the research. You’ve planned an incredible itinerary for a fantastic family getaway. Now what? Whether you’re heading to Rome, Rio or Rockford, here’s some advice, tips and tricks to help make your next ur nex e t vacation stress-free and fun for everyone—including you!
Flying tips
Get packing Write up a packing checklist or download one from your favorite travel site. Let older kids use it as a guide to pack their own bags. Do a bag g check together to make sure nothing is forgotten. For younger kids, turn the checklist into a game; have the little ones “find” the items.
If you fly domestically, TSA Preü may be worth a look. With it, you are routed through shorter, faster-moving security lanes.
Entertainment Travel days can quickly take a turn when kids get bored. Give them a backpack to fill with their favorite entertainment. Travel Rule: they pack it, they carry it.
Airport security Luggage Keep the bag count manageable. Bags with wheels make the luggage challenge easier. Pack an extra “take home” bag (like a duffle bag) sturdy enough to check for trip treasures. Weigh all bags with a handheld luggage scale BEFORE you arrive at the airport. 32 Fall 2018 • goingplaces
CPGP0918_32.indd 1
Airport security can be scary. Talk to kids about the security screening process BEFORE you arrive at the airport. Visit tsa.gov/ travel/security-screening for info. Be prepared for security checkpoints. Kids that look 13 years and older are required to follow adult TSA screening procedures. Ask a TSA agent if you’re not sure about strollers or other unusual carry-on items.
Apply online at tsa.gov/precheck. If you pass, an in-person interview is scheduled at a local TSA office. The $85 membership is valid for five years.
Road trip
Plan an early morning departure. Wake the kids, let them use the bathroom and snuggle them into the car with their favorite blanket and pillow. They’ll likely fall back to sleep.
Technology
Put chargers and charging cables for devices in carry-ons. Portable chargers keep devices charged during long travel days when access to power sources are limited. Bring headphones. ChicagoParent.com
