GET TO KNOW NAPERVILLE

A

bout an hour west of Chicago sits Naperville, a quaint suburb with a super walkable downtown, a lovely lake stroll, arguably the most kid-friendly beaches in the Chicago area and a Land of Nod outlet. It’s totally day-trip worthy. Stop in for lunch at Q-BBQ (103 S. Main St., 630-637-6400, q-bbq.com), a mouth-watering barbecue joint in the center of town. The kids can order the homemade mac-n-cheese with a side of corn bread, while you pile your plate high with brisket burnt ends, Carolina pulled pork, baby back ribs and the smoked Texas brisket. Q-BBQ earned a Bib Gourmand in the Michelin’s renowned restaurant guide—and it’s a fast casual spot (order at the counter, and they’ll bring the food to the table). One of the best parts of Naperville is its Riverwalk, which really shows off the changing seasons (it’s also a great spot for photo shoots). Grab the family, and wander along the river to see the paddleboats go by, to feed the ducks or to simply be. Or, take part in the action by renting a paddleboat or kayak. Rentals are available at the Paddleboat Quarry, southwest of the corner of Jackson Avenue and Eagle Street. The kayaks and paddleboats are available through early October, but only on nonschool days—so don’t think about playing hooky with your kids to go for a ride.

You can also BYO picnic along the Riverwalk, as there are plenty of spots to plop down and have a little munch. The river is perfectly calm. The farther you walk from downtown, the quieter it’ll get, and the more you’ll realize that you’re not in Chicago anymore. The north side of the Riverwalk hugs Centennial Beach (500 W. Jackson Ave.), which is a must-see, as long as the weather obliges. It’s unlike any other beach in Illinois because it’s basically a beach/pool mix, or technically, a quarry. The town made the beach by digging it out to make a poolCO N T I N U E D O N PAG E 1 4

If it’s not beach weather, head over to Ball Factory (864 Ill. 59, 630-44 630-445-8365, ballfactoryfun.com), a relativel relatively new indoor play space that is one of tthe rare places that truly caters to kids ages 1-12. In the baby, toddler and presc preschool area, they have a massive sect sectioned-off space that has soft mats, a ssmall slide, plenty of soft toys and a c comfy couch for adults. But the real f starts when you leave that spot. fun T There’s a trio of 30-foot-long fast slides so you can race, and there’s an entire room for soft ball-blasting, w where kids can shoot the balls at eeach other. In another area, there are p plenty of pedal tractors and there’s eve even an interactive virtual balloon popping area (jump on the virtual balloons and th they’ll pop). Of course, a fantastic indoor p play space wouldn’t be complete without a ball pit, and they’ve got that here, too.

SUMMER STATE OF MIND N

ow that the seasons are changing, if you’re like me, you’re already longing for the days of summer to come back. But just because the leaves are falling and it’s about time for pumpkin-spice everything, it doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to summer. There are still plenty of things to do to keep you in a sunshine state of mind. Chris Thomas

Salute the sandwich Nothing is more summer than going to the fair, and luckily you haven’t missed the oldest continuously running one in the state. The Sandwich Fair is held Sept. 9-13 at the fairgrounds in Sandwich, about 60 miles west of Chicago. With plenty of rides, livestock exhibits, blue-ribbon contests and grandstand events, it has everything you want from the typical fair experience. Admission is $9 for adults and $5 for kids, but there are different deals and discounts almost every day, so it’s best to check out the website before planning your trip. And like most of the fairs in the area, it also offers ride wristbands for the kids, which can be a solid investment over the books and books of tickets you otherwise might purchase. Visit sandwichfair.com for more information.

suds, it also has crafts, activities, face painting and more for the little ones. While there is no cost to enjoy the sights and sounds of Oaktoberfest, tickets for food and drinks are available for purchase with cash only, so hit the ATM beforehand. And make it a really fun day for the kids (and less stressful for you as well) by taking either the CTA or Metra to the event to avoid potential traffic and parking headaches. Details on vendors, music line-ups and directions for driving or arriving by train are at oaktoberfest.net. How ‘bout them apples If there is an apple involved in it, you’ll be able to eat or drink it at the Long Grove Apple Fest Sept. 25-27. Tons of entertainment is featured at multiple locations, plus for the kids there are carnival

rides and pony rides as well. In addition to the Apple Festival events, you’ll also be able to stroll through the historic village and check out its shops and restaurants. Admission is $5 per person and free for kids 12 and under, although they will probably ask you to buy them some fresh apple cider donuts while you are there. I’m guessing you’ll want some anyway. longgroveapplefest.com. Everyone loves a parade Why should Memorial Day and the 4th of July have all the parade fun? Finally let go of summer when you head downtown on Oct. 12 for the 63rd Annual Columbus Day Parade. The parade steps off at 12:30 p.m. and runs down State Street from Wacker to Van Buren. Chances are the kids have off school anyway, allowing you to pretend summer is still going for just one more day. jccia.com.

sk the kids for a show of hands: Who wants a history lesson and who wants a party? You don’t need psychic powers to guess the answer. But what if the history lesson is the party—a really cool learning adventure tucked inside a carnival? The Glenview Park District is the host and Flight Fest is the party, a one-day event happening Sept. 26 at Gallery Park. The fest grew out of a desire to honor the history of the area while offering enough bells and whistles to make this a truly not-to-be-missed family outing. The park and surrounding lands were once home to Naval Air Station Glenview—a U.S. naval air station operating training aircraft and seaplanes on Lake Michigan during WWII. After the war, it became a naval air reserve base until it closed in 1995. Today more than 130 acres of the former base is designated park land. ChicagoParent.com

GPfall2015_37.indd 1

In its second year, Flight Fest is expected to attract even more than the 5,000 people who showed up for its inauguration. The fledgling festival pinky swears you and the kids will learn a lot and have a blast. Jason Hickman, director of recreation, says it’s a typical small town event where families come together for good food and fun entertainment while soaking up a bit of meaningful education about the history of an era and specific area. “It’s a nice way to remember what the site was and enjoy what it is today,” Hickman says.

A local historical organization known as Bring It Home Glenview is setting up a tent you’ll definitely want to visit. The adults will appreciate the photo displays, vintage flight suits and other memorabilia, while budding pilots can engage with clever, interactive displays. The Blue Max Aces will dazzle the crowd with the dips and dives of remote control CO N T I N U E D O N PAG E 3 8

airplane maneuvers. Prepare for oohs and aahs from the kids—and maybe the pleading puppy-dog look that says they want one. You might pack a little extra cash just in case they decide to explore the on-site hobby shop. Organizers plan to wow

the kids with more than a dozen bounce houses, a climbing wall and Euro bungee. Wristbands for unlimited turns cost $8. Throughout the afternoon you can also expect to enjoy roaming musicians, magicians and balloon artists.

Finally, stick around until evening, unfold your lawn chairs and relax to the sounds of American English—a Beatles tribute band—which closes the festival with a sweet exclamation point.

e honest: How many times have you seen Sue, the ginormous T. rex, at the Field Museum? What about the enchanting miniature Fairy Castle at the Museum of Science & Industry? While there’s certainly nothing wrong with these tried-and-true favorites (who doesn’t love dinos and dolls?), there are more than 30 other museums in Chicago worthy of a visit. And even better, there are several that focus on our great city itself. When you meet someone who learns where you’re from, they will more than likely ask you about two things: Michael Jordan and Al Capone. While both people have played important roles in Chicago’s g

Brunk Children’s Museum of Immigration Women’s Park (1827 S. Indiana Ave.; glessnerhouse.org) lets you experience all of this and more. Built in 1836, this is the city’s oldest house. Inside, you will see what life was like for a Chicago family during the city’s formative years. The museum’s annual Family Day takes place Sept. 12 and includes historic demonstrations by costumed interpreters. Next to the park, you’ll find the Glessner House (1800 S. Prairie Ave.). Built in 1887, it was a radical departure from the Victorian homes of the times and was one of the inspirations for the Prairie Style of architecture developed by Frank Lloyd Wright. One of the things that makes Chicago great is that our city is filled with people of different nationalities. Learn about what it was like to immigrate to America at the Brunk Children’s Museum of Immigration at the SwedishAmerican Museum in Andersonville (5211 N. Clark St., swedishamericanmuseum.org ). Although it’s told with a Swedish focus, the story and experience is similar among most of Chicago’s immigrant groups. Here, kids have the chance to experience the Old World by trying different historic farm tasks before riding a 20-foot immigrant steamship to America where they learn about life in a log cabin. So, with a little creativity and a willingness to try something different, you can experience a side of Chicago your kids (and you) might never have seen. Chris Thomas ChicagoParent.com

CITY Kiddie diners If you have really picky eaters, then the chefs here are happy to make a simple noodle soup for them. But there’s so much on the menu that’s way better. The Duck Fat Fried Chicken ($9) was crispy and decadent, while the Fried Brussel Sprouts ($6) somehow almost tasted like fancy fries. The Chahan ($13) is a Japanese fried rice dish, and it’s a fantastic introduction for kids to an ethnic meal, because it’s essentially a choice of a protein combined with fried rice. And if anyone has mastered this dish, it’s Cuschieri.

Little Goat

Little Goat 820 W. Randolph St., (312) 888-3455; littlegoat chicago.com You saw the chef here Stephanie Izard was the winner of Bravo’s Top Chef Season 4. She was also in an episode of Hulu’s A Day in the Life series, which followed her around for a day as she worked. She was on Food Network’s Iron Chef America and battled Chef Michael Symon. Adult diners You can’t go wrong with much here, and some of the dishes and specials even overlap with the bigger goat across the street (that would be The Girl and the Goat) sans the ridiculous reservation times. But the 3 Sister’s Farm Oatmeal ($6) left us racing back for more the following weekend. It was a rich and creamy oatmeal mixed with honey yogurt, apples and oat crumbles that tasted like a warm apple pie disguised as a (not so healthy?) oatmeal breakfast. Kiddie diners Even Elvis might be swayed by the upgrade on his classic meal. The Fat Elvis Waffles ($12) come with a huge scoop of thick peanut butter, chopped bacon bits, maple syrup and sliced bananas slathered over two huge waffles. And if breakfast isn’t your kid’s thing (even at 7 a.m.), you don’t have to fret. They’ll serve your kiddo any meal at any time of the day. CO N T I N U E D O N PAG E 4 8

He’s based in Washington, D.C., and owns multiple restaurants across the country. Adult diners This new burger joint serves fancy hamburgers and handspun shakes—so you can really indulge your taste buds by trying Mendelsohn’s twist on the all-American burger. The Prez Obama Burger ($7.25) won the Chicago Gourmet’s 2014 Hamburger Hop with its bacon, onion marmalade, roquefort cheese and horseradish mayo—and it was a winner with us, too. Coming in a close second was Spike’s Sunnyside ($7), which was a burger topped with bacon and a

sunny side egg. All the burgers are made with natural farm raised beef and are served on a Pennsylvania Dutch bun. Kiddie diners Kids can get a plain burger ($6.50) and handcut fries ($4), but ours went straight for dessert, where they could choose between Toasted Marshmallow, Red Velvet, Cookies and Cream, and Milky Way Malt

shakes (starts at $4.50). Make sure you go off-hours or on the weekend to avoid the mad weekday lunchtime rush, which could have kids waiting up to an hour to eat. Everything is made to order, and the shakes take a little time. We came on a weekend and waited about 10 minutes for our food (and yes, it was totally worth the wait).

If you’re heading this way to go to the aquarium, the Field Museum or the planetarium, it would be such a shame to go straight back home when you’re done. Instead, skip the café in the museum and head over to Chicago Waffles (1400 S. Michigan Ave., 312-8548572, chicagowaffles.com), where you ccan get a waffle fligh h which has red flight velvet, chocolate, Liege and Belgium m mini waffles. Walk off your meal via a stroll on the lake, or run around at the South Loop’s new playground, located in the middle of The Shops at Roosevelt Collection. The playground is fantastic for kids—and it’s smack dab in the center of some parentfavorite stores: Lululemon, The Container Store, H&M (they have a kids’ section at this one) and White House Black Market, plus others. There’s even a movie theater here with stadium seating.

Logan Square It’s getting a reputation—in a good, fun way—for becoming a hipster paradise. And this up-and-coming neighborhood loves its kids. Start by filling up your bellies at Bang Bang Pie Shop (2051 N. California Ave., 773276-8888, bangbangpie. Danielle Braff com). It’s only been in the neighborhood for about three years, but it’s already a hot spot—for good reason. They’ve got savory food served on warm biscuits, which is perfect for breakfast, lunch or a breakfast-y dinner (you must have the Candied Bacon Biscuit plus the grits). And you can’t leave without one of their seasonal pies. Next, take a walk down the brand new 606, an elevated 21 ½-block trail. When the kids need a break, they can play at the Palmer Square Park (2200 N. Kedzie Ave.), a grassy area that was inspired by The Velveteen Rabbit. While it doesn’t have a lot of park equipment, it does have two adorable rabbit statues, a lot of grass, a slide and enough room to run your sillies out. ChicagoParent.com

Little Italy & University Village Tucked away near the University of Illinois, Chicago, is a neighborhood that’s really starting to hit its stride. We can’t mention this area without drooling over our favorite place in all of Chicago: Mario’s Italian Lemonade (1068 W. Taylor St.). These handmade Italian ices come in just about every flavor, from chocolate to watermelon, and they’re just $1.75 for a small. They are worth every.single.penny. There’s a line on weekends and evenings, but if you go during the day, you can usually grab one without a wait, before you camp out on a stoop to eat it. For lunch (yes, dessert came first), head over to County Barbeque (1352 W. Taylor St., 312-929-2528, dmkcounty barbeque.com), which is a Bib Gourmand recipient. Their corn pudding is essentially a cobbler stuffed with corn kernels, and the ribs have a rich crust and a chewy, deep flavor. Then, walk or drive (parking is a cinch) over to Sheridan Park (910 S. Aberdeen St., 312-7465370), which is a spacious park outside a park district building.

Edgewater This quieter community on the north side of Chicago, seven miles from the Loop, contains a whole lot of family fun. Since Edgewater runs along the lake, it’s got a fabulous beach: The Kathy Osterman Beach (5800 N. Lake Shore Drive, 312-742-5121). The water is calm, street parking is a usually a breeze, there are clean bathrooms and there’s even free Wi-Fi. And unlike the North Avenue Beach, where you’re packed like sardines every time the sun considers shining, this one always seems to be peacefully tranquil. Broadway Cellars (5900 N. Broadway St., 773-944-1208, broadwaycellars.net) is a family-friendly brunch spot with bottomless mimosas and bottomless Bloody Marys for the parents. Next, let the munchkins play at Berger Park (6205 N. Sheridan Road), where there’s a playground, a café and plenty of benches for adults to chill and take in the gorgeous water views.

The museum has hands-on exhibits like nothing I’ve seen in other children’s museums, whether the Michigan-flavored apple orchard, an obstacle course that demonstrates what life is like in a wheelchair, or a volcano that explodes every few minutes. Curious Kids also operates the Discovery Zone, which shares space closer to the beach with the historic Silver Beach Carousel. T R AV E L The best part of Blue Harbor, especially as temperatures head downward, is the adjoining Breaker Bay Waterpark, which is always kept at a balmy 84 degrees. The water park is probably best for ages 5-10, when things like the dueling three-story tube slides and twisty-turny body slides produce maximal thrills. But water babies of all ages will enjoy Molly’s Moat, the lazy river that practically demands relaxation, the Recreation Pool, complete with wobbly lily pads that test your balance, and the zero-depth entry S.S. Minnow sprayground, which has geysers and spray features. Older kids will definitely want to try out the Riptide Double Surf Simulator (it requires a signed waiver) for a real boogie board challenge. If Mother Nature cooperates, there is an outdoor pool (with its own bar) or the Lake Michigan beach for some open-air adventures. But on typical fall days, you can still venture outside a bit. Our little golfers gave enthusiastic thumbs-up to the course at Harbor Pointe Mini Golf, and we definitely enjoyed our sweet treats at the oldfashioned South Pier Parlor—both just across the street from the hotel’s entrance. GET IN THE GROOVE

J

azz, reggae, funk or pop, Motown, classical, blues or rock—music changes its tune at the drop of a guitar pick, but it never skips a beat in its universal appeal. Chicago offers some great spots for kids and their parents (and grandparents!) to groove to a virtual smorgasbord of music together.

Juicebox Series If the word juicebox conjures images of giggling, sticky-faced toddlers riding in the mini-van, you’re on the right track—as long as that van is headed to the Juicebox Series. Presented by the city of Chicago, Juicebox showcases some of the area’s best music, dance and theater. Although geared toward the preschool set, younger grade-school children will have a good time, too. Kids even get to take part in the action. Juicebox happens the first and third Fridays of each month at the Chicago Cultural Center (Preston Bradley Hall) and the first and third Saturdays at Garfield Park Conservatory (Horticulture Hall). Best of all: It’s free! cityofchicago.org/dcasemusic.

Old Town School of Folk Music 4544 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago Ask any kid what a playdate is and they’ll tell you it’s hanging out with friends and having fun. The Old Town School of Music has borrowed the term and taken it to a whole new level. Their Playdates offer the 5-and-under crowd musical playtimes. Old Town also hosts Kids’ Concerts throughout the year for the school-aged set, bringing in the best area musicians as well as internationally known touring artists. Ticket prices are $6 for Playdates and $10-$15 for Kids Concerts. oldtownschool.org/ concerts, click on Kids’ Concerts.

School of Rock What kid hasn’t watched The Voice and dreamed of being chosen by Adam Levine? School of Rock brings the dream a little closer with first-rate public concerts featuring performers between the ages of 9 and 17. Music genres include reggae, funk, rock, pop and more. What’s extra cool is that many of the concerts benefit charities. Tickets range from free to $10. Visit schoolofrock. org to find the nearest S.O.R. Beat Kitchen 2100 W. Belmont Ave., Chicago Eating dinner set to music may be nice, but hearing a concert set to brunch is sublime— especially when it appeals to the whole family. The Beat Kitchen, a classic vintage Chicago restaurant bar and venue, knows this. For just $6, the under-aged can bop to the likes of Mr. Singer and the Sharp Cookies, Deep Fried Pickle Project and the Poochamungas. Adults will enjoy a full bar and brunch menu that includes many kid-favorite dishes. Concerts for Kids take place on Sundays at noon (doors open at 11 a.m.). beatkitchen.com.

Dragons Love Tacos The Apollo Theater 2540 N. New York Times bestseller Dragons Love Tacos, by Adam Rubin, is a shining example of that (sometimes elusive) category: if you want to throw a successful party for your dragon pals, you’d better stock up on boatloads of tacos. But hold the spicy salsa—or else. This Emerald City offering was co-created with the Chicago Repertory Ballet which, if you hadn’t already been hooked by the dragon/ taco premise, should totally do the trick.

mericans spent more than $10 billion buying movie tickets in 2014, and if you’ve taken your family to the theater recently, sometimes it feels like you’ve spent that much in just one night. But there are plenty of places left where you don’t have to break the bank to see a show (and a few places where spending the extra money is well worth it). As you start to look for some family fun indoors, check out these unique and different movie theater options. Chris Thomas

A Classic Experience Want to show your kids what going to the movies was like “back in the day”? Chicago has more than a couple of options to watch a film while feeling like you’ve traveled back in time. In the city, nothing beats The Music Box (3733 N. Southport). Located near Wrigley Field, it not only shows new films, but also independent releases, foreign films and even classic movies on Fridays and Saturdays at midnight such as Ghostbusters and Rocky Horror Picture Show. In fact, since 2009, The Music Box has screened more than 1,250 different films in all sorts of formats (from state-of-the-art digital projection to old 16 and 35mm films). Tickets start at $10 per person, but can be slightly higher for special events. musicboxtheatre.com. CO N T I N U E D O N PAG E 7 8

Out in the burbs, check out the Tivoli Theatre (5021 Highland Avenue, Downers Grove). Since Christmas Day 1928, it has been providing entertainment to couples and families alike. And while the theater might have a very cool classic look to it, its film and sound capabilities are

state of the art. Tickets are just $5 per person and they offer free refills on any size fountain drink and popcorn. And for a real throwback experience, catch a show on Friday or Saturday and arrive early and hear the Wurlitzer Pipe Organ concert prior to your feature. classiccinemas.com.

Pack Up the Car Your car should be warm enough to pack up the family and catch a double feature at the Cascade Drive-In (1100 E. North Ave., West Chicago). Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids (and that covers both features). And while it offers a full-service concession stand, they also allow you to bring in your own food. Show times vary (depending on

when it gets dark). cascadedrivein.com. Further up north, you can head to the McHenry Outdoor Theater (1510 Chapel Hill Road, McHenry). Tickets here are also $10 for adults and $5 for the kids and they offer a full concession stand. goldenagecinemas.com. And both outdoor theaters allow you to bring your dogs, so no need to leave man’s best friend at home.

A GHOULISH

GATHERING

I

t’s the scariest time of the year, but the new Halloween Gathering on the Chicago Cultural Mile is turning it into scary amounts of fun for kids of all ages.

For the first time, Chicagoland families are invited to enjoy a festival where city favorites such as The Field Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, the Silent Theatre Company and others band together for a one-day explosion of 96 Fall 2015 • goingplaces

spooky fun. On Oct. 24, cruise the Cultural Mile while getting your craft on at maskmaking workshops and viewing dance and theater performances and displays of artistry. Throughout the afternoon, families can

march in the children’s costume parade in Maggie Daley Park on the ribbon, take part in a workshop in Millennium Park and view a zombie-tastic performance of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” on stage. The grand finale will be a lantern-lit parade where performers will dance, play music and entertain spectators. Emily Adams ChicagoParent.com
