• Snoring/Mouth Breathing • Swollen Adenoids and Tonsils • Chronic Allergies • Nightmares

Only recently have health care providers and researchers begun to understand the impact of Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) on these symptoms. Research has shown that SDB-induced oxygen deprivation is a major contributing factor to the childhood health disorders shown above. Yet many kids with these disorders are still being prescribed powerful drugs that often fail to address the root causes. Now there is a natural, permanent and more effective solution to treat SDB-related issues in children.

Every night in America, an estimated 9 out of 10 children suffer from Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) Healthy Start is an All-Natural Oral Appliance Therapy System delivered by dentists, which addresses the root causes of SDB by reshaping the child’s oral cavity and airway to optimize airflow and promote proper nasal breathing during sleep. As this happens, many of the symptoms of SDB diminish or disappear entirely. In addition, because Healthy Start has been specifically designed to promote proper growth of the jaws, most kids develop enough room for their teeth, and the need for braces can be eliminated. Healthy Start is appropriate treatment for children ages 3 - 12 years old.

cognitively & physically. This is unique for each child at each stage of development. Sonnets Academy teachers celebrate diversity in their classrooms - understanding each child’s distinctive style of play and the cultural and developmental factors that contribute to these differences among children.

“Our Pre-K class explores science with hands-on experiments that excite our five senses. Asking questions about our experiments furthers our curiosity and exploration to build a positive and exciting attitude toward scientific inquiry.” -Mr. Doug, Preschool Teacher

Our play-based curriculum concentrates on the process through which children learn. Discovery-based play expands their imagination, encourages their sense of wonder and provides a diverse & comprehensive foundation for cognitive, social, emotional & creative growth that will shape their adolescence and adulthood. Children learn how to navigate their future interpersonal relationships from their social interactions in early childhood. When children play together, they learn to celebrate differences as they cooperate and collaborate - creating empathetic problem solvers. When a child’s play is guided and encouraged by their teacher, the child establishes trust, respect & confidence – essential to a lifelong love of learning.

Our core values form the foundation of our school community. These values expand our inner-capacity to learn and love well. Our classrooms are living examples of these ideals; they are felt, heard and seen in action everyday.

“ I think I can, I think I can.” – The Little Engine that Could

“ Unless someone like you cares an awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” – The Lorax

“ You have been my friend. That in itself is a tremendous thing.” – Charlotte’s Web

“ Watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely of places.”

“ The more he gave away, the more delighted he became.” – The Rainbow Fish

“ Always let your con science be your guide.” – Pinocchio

– The Minpins

“ You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.”

“ Let the wild rumpus start!” – Where the Wild Things Are

“ You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” – Winnie the Pooh

– Dr. Seuss

We believe these values will be present in our students throughout their lives as active citizens, lifelong learners, and loyal friends. More information available at www.lppschools.com

EDITOR’S NOTE

Love in Chicago

TAMARA L. O’SHAUGHNESSY

“The

best family musical in years.”

March 22 –April 10

My latest guilty pleasure has been the Hallmark Channel movies; I’m a sucker for a love story. My husband, Bob, does some serious eye rolling every time he sees the girls and me hunkered down under blankets on these cold weekends indulging in corny plot lines, weak acting and salty popcorn.

As is my habit, however, I am constantly casually chatting with the girls during the movies about what they think about boys, what kinds of things they see happening with their friends’ relationships, what makes a relationship good or bad and how fantasy rarely meets reality. I hope you are a sucker for a love story, too, because this month we went looking for a few families who know about that reality when it comes to finding and keeping love. I hope ope you enjoy reading the love stories of the five families, milies, based loosely on the hit TV show “Modern Modern Family,” this month. There is so much more to love ove about this issue: u You’ll be inspired by mom om Jen DeBouver, who is crusading to o keep alive the memories of her babies, and those of other families’ babies, who died from congenital heart defects. u You’ll be motivated to get the kids in the kitchen with you to cook up some fun. I personally can’t wait to try the biscuit dough doughnuts hnuts with my girls. u You’ll find yourself sud-denly dreaming about a romantic antic getaway. u You’ll even meet the perfect rfect man. (So what if he’s chocolate?!) ate?!) I hope you have a month filled lled with love.

Happy Play Cafe was created by two sisters, both parents themselves, on the theory that pets need a loving environment and most kids love playing with pets. “Everybody loves the concept of having animals and a play space,” manager Amelia Milton says. One hundred parakeets fill the

Travel relief at the Hilton O’Hare

H

ilton understands that the term “family vacation” can sometimes feel oxymoronic. They get that you don’t want to sacrifice comfort for convenience or 100 percent believe that getting from Point A to Point B doesn’t have to feel like a trek across the Oregon Trail. As my family recently discovered, a Family Suite stay at the Hilton O’Hare might just save your sanity. First off, our room was bigger than my first Chicago apartment. Being a Hilton, it already had the comfiest king-sized bed known to man, but the girls were thrilled to discover that the coziness extended to their pull-out couch.

The kids didn’t have too much time to waste on their sleeping arrangements, however; they were too busy going gaga for their travel kits. They each received a drawstring bag with personalized luggage tags, art supplies and activities, and a few toys for the bath. We ended up bringing these kits to dinner and, while the kids made paper airplanes and filled in MadLibs, P.J. and I enjoyed a glass of wine. (I mean, quality family time.) Between that and a quick swim at the hotel’s fitness center, we barely had time to make use of the On-Demand movies and video games. The rooms were completely darkened and soundproof. Considering that my own home—12 miles from

O’Hare—isn’t as quiet, it’s impressive that a hotel on the airport’s property can boast such a claim. And with an underground walkway connecting the hotel to O’Hare’s domestic terminals, your family can actually roll out of bed and stroll to your flight. No taxis. No shuttles. Plus, since these suites start at $134 a night, you’ll be

Hilton Chicago O’Hare Airport u hilton.com able to afford a second glass of wine. Which you’ll need. Because you’re still traveling with your family. Keely Flynn

Pizza night done right Zoom Pizza Factory a hit with kids (and parents)

I

f “pizza night” has evolved into a half-hearted phone order, you’re really going to want to seek out Lincoln Park’s newest (and arguably best) pizza place. What’s currently a well-kept secret won’t remain that way once folks try out one of the three pizza shells, which include gluten-free and ancient grain options. The unlimited toppings are fresh, adventurous and magical (even if your kids still hold out for pepperoni). And why stop at pizza? The signature Zalata is your choice of crust, piled high with the freshest salad you’ve ever had at a pizza joint. The Drizzle Bar

is a station where you can add fresh basil, Korean BBQ and other sauces to your creations, and the Water Bar allows you to get your fill of purified water (filtered through a sustainable system) in either sparkling or ambient form to add your choice of fresh fruit for infusion. The minds behind Zoom Pizza Factory have put considerable care into the tiniest and best details; the impossibly light crust is the result of dozens of trial-and-error recipes (Chef Paul Guerrero was formerly with Wildfire and Wolfgang Puck), the ingredients are sourced from the same places as the fanciest Chicago restaurants, and

the ever-changing combinations will result in your new favorite pizza order. (Ask the pizza concierge—or pizzaristas—crafting your pizza for recommendations.) Need more to love? Zoom Pizza’s waste is 98 percent compostable and they’ve aligned themselves with Chive Charities and water.org. Seriously, have you ever done so much good by just going out for dinner? On top of that, its mobile

Chicago Theatre Week offers much for families or newcomers to the theatrical glory that is Chicago Theatre Week created by the League of Chicago Theatres and Choose Chicago, the premise is marvelous. From Feb. 11-21, theater tickets will be priced at $30, $15, or even less all across town. That means those shows at the Goodman, Steppenwolf and Second City are wonderfully affordable. Last year’s Theatre Week featured 116 theater companies and welcomed nearly 10,000 Chicagoans. And with a range of touring and pre-Broadway shows, new musicals, old favorites and the brand of comedy for which Chicago is famous, you’re guaranteed an incredible

array of performances. Our family-friendly picks for 2016: Two shows at Chicago Children’s Theatre are on board, including the mesmerizing (and wordless) Snow Angel, which tells the story of two children who discover a magical winter wonderland, as well as Gale LaJoye’s play, Snowflake, a hilarious piece that elevates everyday objects into treasures. (chicago childrenstheatre.org) Skippyjon Jones in the Cirque de Ole takes center ring at Emerald City Theatre. Fans of the book series will adore this story of circus stunts, selfacceptance and Chihuahuas. (emeraldcitytheatre.com) And for an intro into the world of classic Broadway,

we highly recommend Drury Lane’s Bye Bye Birdie. A rock n’ roll mania tale of heartthrob Conrad Birdie and the prize of a “farewell” kiss on the Ed Sullivan Show will resonate with any media-happy tweens in your household. (drurylanetheatre.com) Keely Flynn

Elina Casell Hjalmarsson Husband, Niklas Hjalmarsson, Blackhawks defenseman; son Theo, 21 months

{M.O.M}

Fashion designer and fashion blogger Chicago How has being a mom inspired you? It makes me think more about the future. It inspires me to be a better person and try to make his future better. I obviously love being a mom; he is the best kid ever. He inspires me to be a good mom and to help him be a good person growing up. How did your relationship with Niklas change when Theo came along? I think we became closer. I didn’t have the easiest birth, it was a hard time for me. That definitely grew us stronger as a couple and as a family. Both Niklas and I have the same values, which makes us stronger as a family. We definitely want to see him grow up like a normal kid. I feel like kids grow up so much faster than they should; we want him to grow up, to feel and be happy, have fun as a kid as long as possible.

obviously, but it’s on a different level. I didn’t expect it to be like this. I didn’t expect to worry about his future this much. What is your favorite thing to do with your boys? We love to hang out as a family, watch movies. (Theo) loves music and loves to go to music class. Niklas’ schedule and my schedule are a little bit all over the place. When we are

>>

Name one thing about being a mom you didn’t expect: Everybody says that you can’t explain how much you love your child when you have them. But I didn’t expect you could love someone so much. I knew I would love him,

all together, we just try to be together as a family and hang out. What are your three fashion tips for busy moms? Take time for yourself. You become a better mom if you actually take care of yourself, too. Skinny jeans, a T-shirt and leather jacket—it’s basic, it’s simple and it always works. You don’t have to run around in sweats. Concealer is your best friend.

Marriage makeover:

4 relationship resolutions to start now!

When 2016 started, most of us had goals to start it off right. It might have been our career, learning a skill, helping our kids. But what about improving our marriages? Marriage takes work year-round. Here are four resolutions to start NOW for your marriage! 1) Take time to focus on the person, not the daily grind of chores, kids and work. 2) Don’t focus on your spouse’s faults, but look at strengths. 3) Evaluate how you can love better, not how you want to be loved better. 4) Make couple time a must! HEY BABY

Fave diaper bags Five double duty bags that will make your life easier

E

BY LINDSAY PINCHUK

xpecting and new moms LOVE diaper bags! First and foremost, this purchase is for mom to use when baby arrives (unlike many of the other items on your registry, which are just for baby!). Second, mom gets to pick it out and have it represent her own style. Before going out and spending a ton of money on a designer name diaper bag, it’s important to take these tips into consideration:

u Is the bag easy to clean? You want something that can be washed and easily be wiped clean. Liquids spill, and the last place you want them to be is on the inside of your $500+ cotton designer diaper bag. u Are there a lot of pockets? With baby in tow, your load nearly doubles when you leave the house. Having a lot of pockets helps to organize both mom’s and baby’s items. u How heavy is the bag? As noted above, your load is about to get heavier. If the bag is heavy to begin with, it will be even harder to carry once you fill it up. Make sure to check out these all-star diaper bags to add to your registry:

Twelve Little Unisex Courage Backpack

Skip Hop Signature Duo, $65 This bag is on the smaller side, but it is gender neutral and provides all of the space really needed to pack without overpacking. It has 10 pockets and a zip closure—and can even hold a laptop.

2

LeSportsac Ryan Bag, starting at $138 This bag is the lightest on our list and one of the most practical. It’s washable and holds EVERYTHING.

Diaper Dude Messenger Bag

4 Diaper Dude Messenger Bag, $64.99 This bag works for both mom and dad and comes in a variety of colors. Its ergonomic design makes it easy to carry cross-body style. 5 Newlie Lily Tote Diaper Bag, $99 From the creator of Timi & Leslie, Newlie is a brand new stylish, functional and affordable diaper bag line. The best thing about this diaper bag is that it doesn’t look like one! New moms can use one bag for everything—work, weekend AND baby—without having to go back and forth. GOOD SENSE EATING

‘In the mood’ food

CHRISTINE PALUMBO

Couples hoping to spice up their love life have long turned to candlelight, romantic music and a bottle of wine. But can the menu serve as an aphrodisiac as well? Here’s the bad news: Sadly, there isn’t much science behind foods that get you in the mood.

“Foods such as chocolate, oysters, shrimp and strawberries have been identified as aphrodisiacs, but little evidence supports that these foods produce any significant effects,” according to Jim White, RDN, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, ACSM exercise physiologist and owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios. Lentils, grapes, truffles, pine nuts, artichokes, vanilla, alcohol, figs, honey and even turmeric are other foods touted as ways to increase libido.

Food for a healthy love life Here’s the good news: Enjoying a healthy dietary lifestyle regularly will improve how someone feels physically and mentally, which naturally impacts their love life, according to White. “When the body feels healthy and is working properly, the individual is more likely to desire engaging in

acts of love,” he says. So what’s a healthy dietary lifestyle? You guessed it. It includes fresh fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains and plenty of water every day. “When men and women are eating healthy and exercising, they look better for their partner and they are more self-confident, which can improve their overall love life,” he says. Steer clear of most unhealthy foods, especially in excess. A poor diet can make someone feel tired, cause excessive weight gain or negatively impact their mood. So what about those socalled aphrodisiacs? Oysters, shrimp, strawberries, lentils, grapes, truffles, pine nuts, artichokes, vanilla, alcohol, figs, honey and yes, a little chocolate, are nutrient-rich foods that taste delicious and can improve your health and that of your sweetheart, too.

FAILING WITH GUSTO

More cowbell please

Joe believes that unless you are a dairy farmer, no sane person should be issued a cowbell. (The Force is not as strong with that one.) A local father I know was escorted out of a tiny gym after his treasured cowbell irked the wrong referee. Sure, he might have been a little trigger-happy (double dribble call against the other team = COWBELL!), but the lifetime ban from attending Catholic League Basketball still seems a bit excessive. I begged Joe to let me bring a cowbell to a chess tournament once. I thought it would be super funny—a first time for everything! He said he would turn me in to the National Chess Federation himself. Suffering from cowbell-envy, I have instead taken to yelling the words: COWBELL COWBELL COWBELL!

After that, you can usually hear me screaming: DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES? Or AGAIN! Or YOU’RE KILLING ME, SMALLS! Joe stopped sitting next to me in the bleachers years ago. He also says I watch too many movies. I see a certain symbolism in the cowbell that I think others miss. It was originally intended as a way to locate lost cows, and sport spectators never waffle on whose parent brought the cowbell. Come game day, kids are often nervous and anxious. They worry they might let their team down. They think their parents will be disappointed in them. Cowbell is a strong

M O M

statement of support from a parent who will never waver in their devotion. The message is clear: Home is nearby. And it loves you. There aren’t many people willing to sacrifice their carefully crafted image and personal poise for another. Cowbell bearers face open disdain, mocking and ostracization. I personally have never done the wave at a professional sporting event. I won’t paint my face for the Chicago Bears. I DO have standards. But for sixth-grade basketball? Dude, I’m making signs and crafting Danny-specific chants. Cowbell is unconditional love. It is proud, undeniable and obnoxious. Most importantly, it is felt deeply and without question, even when the object of that love pretends he has no idea who you are as he sprints to the locker room. Still, I believe the world needs more cowbell. Marianne Walsh is a Chicago mom of three boys. Want more? Go to ChicagoParent.com and webandofmothers.blogspot.com.

Talk back

MARIANNE WALSH

Despite being forbidden by my husband (and several school by-laws) from toting a cowbell to our sons’ assorted competitive events, I definitely have a little bit of Christopher Walken lurking just beneath the surface. “I got a fever, and the only prescription is cowbell.” In the ultra-competitive world of youth sports, the use of cowbell remains controversial. I understand that sounding off after a fifth unanswered goal may be overkill, but the urge to rattle that thin sheet of metal is strong, like the Force. Why even have a cowbell if you can’t ring it? Yoda would totally have my back.

VOICE: LEA GROVER

No regrets I gave up my ambitions for motherhood

I

had known what I wanted to be from the time I was 14. I wanted to go into politics. I was determined. I started college at 14, the idea still fermenting in my brain as I found myself falling in love with art and theater as well as anthropology and sociology. Eventually I moved away from home for the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, but I didn’t last long. Painting, as fun as it was, didn’t fulfill me in a way I knew public service would. I left college and became an AmeriCorps VISTA, working to serve the residents of the Chicago Public Housing communities, and in particular, the notorious Cabrini Green project. I will never forget the playground at Cabrini Green—plastic structures with no children near them, warped from fire and riddled with bullet holes. I was reinvigorated. I knew not only how much I needed to go into politics, to change the way we deal as a country with poverty, but I also saw a clear path. I spent another year working with AmeriCorps, this time as a public policy representative. I spent my days talking about issues facing inner city children

I still look back on my life and wonder if I should have done something different. with the likes of Bobby Rush and Barack Obama. I applied to transfer into a new pilot program at the University of Illinois at Chicago—the first B.A. of its kind in Urban Policy and Public Administration. I was set to graduate in two years, with my eyes set firmly on law school afterwards. I was going into politics, to fix a system I had seen was broken too many ways to count. And then my fiancé got sick. The day after he proposed to me, he was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Within a few months, I’d taken a leave of absence from school, opting to stay

home and care for him full time. I figured my dreams would always be there. But the love of my life? He might not. He probably wouldn’t. This was the time I was going to get and I was going to make the most of it. But after going through brain surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and an experimental trial using arsenic to poison his tumors, he got kind of better. Not completely better, no doctor would ever say a person with a glioblastoma is completely better, but stable. We were free to plan for the future in a way we never had before. I went back to school, but we talked our plans over in a different way. Now it wasn’t about what I would do with my career, although that was a part of it. Now we talked about what we had left. How much time. What mattered most to do with it. We decided to have children immediately. It took me three more years, parttime, to finish my degree. I walked across the stage to claim my diploma three days shy of my due date with my third daughter. And I struggled through my classes in a way school had never troubled me before. When I graduated and my last child was born, I didn’t even think to look into law school. There just wasn’t time. With three under 3 and a husband with who-knew-how-much-time ahead of him, law school was the farthest thing from my mind. I still look back on my life and wonder if I should have done something different. Knowing what I know now, about how eight years later my husband would still be with me, still fighting the cancer

and living life to the fullest, I wonder if I could have done it all. If I could have put off having children while I went to law school, if I could be an aide in a congressional office now or working in City Hall, fighting my way to a position where I could really make a difference. Working my way toward the year in another decade when I might be in a position to run for a state or national office. It could happen. Well, it could have happened. But life took me another way. I have other dreams now: of writing the great American novel, of encouraging my daughters to become astronauts or doctors or maybe even President someday. It’s not the dream I had. But it’s a good dream, nonetheless. We are only ever able to see the present, but we never stop imagining the future. The fact is that the future is never certain, it’s never inevitable. We make choices based on where we are now and what we need now. Where am I now is still head over heels in love with an incredible man I’m grateful to spend my time with and mother to three wonderful children full of curiosity and potential. If I had focused on my career, I might not have any of that. I will never regret having them in my life, which means I will never regret my choice to abandon my political ambitions. There’s plenty of work to be done to make the world a better place without spending my days commuting to Springfield. Today is what matters. And today, I am unfathomably grateful. Lea Grover is a Chicago mom of three.

It’s a common-cliche for fathers: “When my daughter becomes a teen, I’m going to answer the door with a rifle! I’m locking her in a tower! I’m sending her to a convent!” What no one is telling jumpy, hormone-fearing dads is that crushes begin long before sexuality does—even a 4-year-old can become “twitterpated,” and when it happens, someone’s heart definitely gets broken.

REAL PARENTS IN THE TRENCHES

The best way we’ve found to teach kids how to love others

Lead by example. Teach them how you want them to treat others. Kids will follow. Ryan Salzwedel, Chicago

During the holidays, through our church, we bring meals to people who have fallen on hard times. If we find out a neighbor needs help, we are there with whatever it is that they need. Helping our fellow man, whether we know them or not, that is love. Kerry Quirin, Downers Grove

I’ve tried to teach them to love each other as siblings. When they can have compassion for each other no matter what, it’s easy to translate that to anyone. We aren’t allowed to say we “hate” anyone or to carry grudges. We speak positively, forgive and “love thy neighbor.” Rani Morrison, Oak Park

modernfamily: Chicago edition These families are making love and life work every day BY DANIELLE BRAFF PHOTOGRAPHY BY THOMAS KUBIK BC’s “Modern Family” may have won awards for being so cool, hip and funny, but the show’s families don’t have anything on Chicago’s modern families, who are so cool, hip—and very real. Formed via all sorts of creative mixes and all fueled by love, these five families are among the many making up our great communities.

A

A happy trio (and growing?) When Herb Lentz spotted Patrick Barnum on the dating site, chemistry.com, back in 2009, Lentz was drawn to him. “We both said that we wanted to have families, which isn’t what you would see a lot online, especially with gay men,” Lentz says. Before long, they’d find they had much more in common than wanting a family. Barnum proposed to Lentz on top of the Diamond Head state monument overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

“We aren’t the most athletic people, and at the end, there are lots of stairs. I was drenched and tired, but Patrick kept wanting to hang around,” Lentz says about the moments leading up to the proposal. They topped off the romantic proclamation with a shaved ice. Both wanted to raise their family in Chicago, where Lentz is the office manager at an architecture firm and Barnum is the data government coordinator for a children’s hospital. Their dream of a family came true when they adopted Miles through a private

adoption, bringing him home in May 2014 when he was just 3 weeks old. “He is whip smart and he’s been a delight,” Lentz says. “I think there’s more in our future.” But being a gay family isn’t without its bumps. “We rarely feel different or ‘other’ in this city. But on a micro level, it’s different. When I’m out with him, people say, ‘Oh, Mommy must be at home today.’ But Chicago is a good place for a same-sex couple to raise a child,” Lentz says. Mollie thought Erron’s original message was funny, but she wasn’t convinced she should go out with him until she realized they already had a connection: Mollie went to high school with his cousin. “She was a nice girl who I knew really well, so I figured he couldn’t be a mass murderer,” she says. Add in one adorable dog, and Mollie decided that Erron was safe. Six months later, the pair moved in together and in 2007, they got married

on a beach in Mexico. On their honeymoon, Mollie got pregnant with their daughter, Dora, now 7. Their son, Oren, now 2, followed in 2013, and shortly after, the family moved from their two-bedroom condo downtown to a sprawling home in Long Grove. “Life is very suburban now,” Mollie says. Erron recently co-founded Fisher & LaMonica, P.C., a medical malpractice and personal injury law firm in Chicago, and he’s much happier now that he’s his own boss. “Erron works a lot, but he likes to leave for work early so he’s home for dinner every night,” says Mollie, who works from home part-time as the firm’s bookkeeper. “We spend a lot of time in our new home, by the campfire as a family,” Mollie says. “We’re happy and cozy and we love it.”

An unlikely match Monica Zanetti was looking for a couch when she found her true love. Yet the furniture salesman, Jeremy Reed, and Zanetti were total opposites. “He’s from Portland and he’s a total little white boy, and I’m a Latin girl,” Zanetti says. “It’s been a lot of melting and trying to understand each other.” The first hurdle: celebrations. Zanetti’s family celebrates everything—and they celebrate with big, loud parties with their big, loud extended families. Reed grew up with his mother and his brother, who prefer to celebrate quietly with a Scrabble game for entertainment. The other hard part was figuring out responsibilities within their cultures. It’s very common, almost expected, to give back to relatives in the Latino culture, Zanetti explains. When Reed met her, she was helping a few family members go to school by sending them $200 a month. But they’ve made it work while growing their family with two kids, Jackie and Nicholas, ages 7 and 8. The most recent big adjustment came last fall when Zanetti’s 28-year-old son, Taylor—whom she had when she was 15 and gave up for adoption— moved in. Taylor lived with them until January, but they have an open door if he wants to return. CONTINUED ON PAGE 36

A rough start to love Aisha Ellis moved to Chicago for a student teaching job with her fiancé and quickly became best friends with fellow student teacher, Lori Ellis. “We were teaching on the west side of Chicago. We were all thrown into CPS at 21, with no prior experience, so we all bonded.” However, when Aisha’s relationship with her husbandto-be quickly crumbled and ended, she confessed to Lori that she had feelings for her. Lori, who had always been a lesbian, was nervous to start a relationship. “She thought that I would wake up and say, ‘I don’t want to be a lesbian,’” Aisha says. While Aisha’s family was supportive of her new relationship, Lori’s father disowned her. Undeterred, they

had a commitment ceremony in 2007. Three years later, Aisha gave birth to the couple’s first child, Henry, now 5, and Lori told her parents, “If you don’t accept him as my child, then that will be it for us.’” Lori’s parents soon realized they were going to have to love Aisha or lose their daughter and their grandchild. “They met Henry, and that was the ice melting,” Aisha says. Lori and Aisha got a state-recognized civil union in 2011. Two years later, Lori gave birth to the couple’s second child, Abram, 2. And while some people may ask her if she’s given up a lot in order to make a mid-life change from men to women, Aisha doesn’t look at it that way. “I feel like I have a phenomenal life,” she says.

More love to spread After Jill and Ed Pawlinski married in 2002, they began trying for a baby to no avail. They delved into fertility treatments, but didn’t want to continue down that path without the promise of a baby at the end. So they decided to try adoption. Two years after getting married, their first child, Nicholas, a 3-week-old baby born at 31 weeks, was placed with them. “When we got the call for him, I was so nervous, but we took that leap of faith,” Jill says. “Nicholas has no delays, and he’s smart, like a sponge.” When Nicholas was 10 months old, they decided to do it again, and just months later, the couple adopted their second child. This time, they adopted a baby girl, Natalie, now 10. “When you’re going through adoption, it’s like hurry up and wait, and then you have to run and pick her up and do this and do that,” Jill says. Then came Cameron, who was just 10 ½ months younger than the couple’s second baby, giving them a total of three babies in 25 months. When the Pawlinskis offered their home to Safe Families for Children, an

organization that provides homes for children if their parents need a safe place for them, they quickly added another baby to the family four years ago after Alex’s family put him up for adoption. “We fell in love with him right away,” Jill says. “When I look back on it, I don’t know how I did it. But in a lot of ways, it was easier than having them spread out, because they were kind of all doing the same thing at the same time.”

In between their permanent children, there have also been a handful of kids come and go through their home. “I hope I’m making a difference,” Jill says. “It’s a natural thing for me to have more babies, and it’s busy, but even now, I find myself thinking, ‘Let’s help that child out.’ It’s not for everyone, but I enjoy it.” Danielle Braff is a Chicago area freelance writer and mom of two little girls.

Romantic getaways for Chicago couples, near and far

Love adventures

A

BY EMILY ADAMS

t this point, you’d settle for a date night consisting of take out and a made-for-TV movie. (Which, in all honesty, sounds magnificent.) But dream with me here, folks. Imagine a world where grandma’s got the kids. A world where you and your special someone can walk downtown, hop in the car or take off on a plane and emerge in a nirvana of spa treatments and fuzzy white robes, a utopia of candlelit dining and gorgeous scenery or a paradise of adventure and grown-up conversation.

These three getaways are couple tested and approved as incredibly romantic. Imagination, meet reality.

The luxury staycation @ The Langham Chicago langhamhotels.com Luxurious doesn’t even begin to describe a night at The Langham. This is an

elegant Chicago retreat fit for the Obamas. The best part of this romantic escape is that it’s right downtown, so the stress of travel is gone and you have more time to focus on relaxation. With the River Romance package, you’ll find yourself in a Grand King or Suite that you’ll never want to leave. And with a giant, dreamy bed, a complimentary bottle of bubbly, floorto-ceiling windows with

views of the Chicago River, a swanky mini-bar full of gourmet candies and snacks and Bluetooth speakers to spark a little slow-dancing action, you won’t need to. But you absolutely have to tear yourself away at some point to experience the wonder that is the Chuan Spa. With the River Romance package, you get 20 percent off any 60-minute treatment, aka one hour in heaven. The

couples’ massage is highly recommended. Just walking in the door of the spa will have you feeling more tranquil than you have in the past year. Make sure to leave plenty of time to explore the spa’s other amenities. In the morning, enjoy an American breakfast for two in bed at your leisure. CONTINUED ON PAGE 40

lakegenevawi.com Since it’s the subject of the Guns N’ Roses’ track “Paradise City,” you have some idea of what to expect from this picturesque lake town tucked in southern Wisconsin. Less than two hours from Chicago, Lake Geneva is an ideal weekend trip for harried parents looking for a little peace and quiet. From the quaint antique shops in town to the lakefront mansions, the local, friendly restaurants and the beautiful hiking and biking trails, everything about this place is so charming, you’ll be falling in love with more than just your significant other. For a real treat, stay at the Grand Geneva Resort. Just a few minutes from the lake, this resort was originally a Playboy Club Hotel but is now a cozy, cabin-like retreat for couples and families. Stay comfy in the room with a book by the fireplace, head to the WELL Spa + Salon for some much-needed R&R or grab a drink by the fire pit overlooking the water. In chilly temps, you can explore ice skating and skiing on the resort grounds. Or

don’t leave the warmth at all with superb dining options such as Geneva ChopHouse and Ristoranté Brissago in the resort itself. Couples should take advantage of the fun classes and activities at the hotel, such as a beer and cheese tasting or cooking class. A weekend in Lake Geneva is as enchantingly soothing or as enjoyably bustling as you want it to be, which is why you’ll most likely be daydreaming about moving to one of the mansions on the lake by Sunday evening.

The adventure awaits @ Park City, Utah visitparkcity.com Mountain-lovers, listen up. Park City is without a doubt the most magical little ski town around and is exactly the snowy trip you have to take with your valentine this winter. Thanks to an easy flight from O’Hare, Chicagoans can be on the slopes in less than four hours. But the convenience of a trip to Park City isn’t the biggest reason to go. This gem of a retreat is ideal for a romantic getaway: Everything here is drop-dead, postcard-ready gorgeous. Majestic fireplaces crackling in every room. Evergreen trees lining every road. Twinkle lights lacing every building. And the locals are extremely welcoming and excited to show off their little spot on the mountain. As strange as it sounds, make sure you go during snowy weather. As many Park City residents will tell you, they’ve got the best

classes and daycare options all over the mountain make it possible to give the kids the time of their lives while mom and dad indulge in alone time. You really can’t go wrong with any of the beautiful lodge-style resorts such as the Waldorf Astoria, Montage Deer Valley, Stein Eriksen Lodge and the St. Regis Deer Valley, each with a

snow in the world, which means that you’ll have best ski experience of your life no matter your skill level. Park City also makes a pretty spectacular place to learn. (Not to mention all the romantic moments of falling in the snow together.) Hoping for some romance but also have little ones tagging along? Not a problem—youth

he first time Jen DeBouver cradled her 6-week-old son came just after he died. Since his birth, baby Asher was isolated in a cardiac care incubator while doctors first repaired his heart defect, then attempted to stop his blood from clotting. A day earlier, DeBouver had a bad feeling. Call it mother’s intuition. Call it a hunch. Call it the worst phone call a new parent could receive.

“Get to the hospital as soon as possible,” a nurse told her in the middle of the night. By the time she arrived, it was too late. On Oct. 23, 2012, her bundle of joy, hopes and dreams had passed away. Another tiny victim of a congenital heart defect, the most common birth defect. CHDs kill more children than all cancers combined, according to the Congenital Heart Public Health Consortium. An ultrasound first detected Asher’s heart defect. It also showed one of his hands covering his heart. Immediately after his death, DeBouver cradled Asher in her arms while remembering her firstborn child, daughter Olivia, who was stillborn just 11 months earlier. DeBouver sobbed when Olivia died, blaming herself. She felt mostly numb when Asher died. The mother of two was still without a family. “I felt helpless,” DeBouver says. “And lost.” She didn’t know where to

turn or who to ask for help. Her heart was broken over her son’s broken heart. Though her loved ones tried to comfort her, she needed something more. She found the “more” when Asher’s doctor told her that blood clots were a surging problem for hospitalized children, yet there wasn’t a support foundation in the Chicago area. “We knew this had to change,” DeBouver says. A few months later, she and her husband, James, created the Asher James Congenital Heart Disease & Thrombosis Foundation to offer support, medical resources and hope to other grieving parents. “Going through my own grief, I really didn’t feel like anyone understood what I was going through,” she says. That is, until she was invited to speak at a meeting for Mended Little Hearts of Chicago, a national organization with 90 chapters. Started in 2004, the group helps families

affected by heart disease and related problems. There, DeBouver met likeminded mothers with children affected by CHD. “I finally felt like there were people who understood me,” she says. “Oftentimes, our society doesn’t understand the loss of a child and they want the parents to forget, move on and not remember them. But parents want nothing more than for their child to be remembered.” DeBouver, 35, soon became the close-knit group’s bereavement coordinator. She implemented an angel memory-box program at five Chicago area children’s hospitals, as well as support meetings for bereaved families. “I want to make sure that our lost children are not forgotten,” says DeBouver. Through Mended Little Hearts, DeBouver met Melanie Toth, who founded the Chicago chapter after her son, Luke, was born with a congenital heart

defect. He survived it, with two surgeries the first year of his life, and now lives a relatively normal life at age 7 in spite of his rare heart defect, Tetralogy of Fallot. “I’ve watched my son almost pass away twice, but he doesn’t look sick and people don’t understand how this can be with kids who have congenital heart

problems,” Toth says. Together, DeBouver and Toth have become a dynamic duo. DeBouver also serves as bereavement coordinator for the national Mended Little Hearts chapter. “I have made sure that the bereaved families have not CONTINUED ON PAGE 44

been forgotten in this support group,” she says, pulling out an angel memory box that grieving parents receive. It’s filled, in part, with a stuffed Teddy bear, a white photo box, a tea light candle holder, a locket of hair holder, a homemade “Olivia” receiving blanket in honor of DeBouver’s daughter, and a framed poem. “Parents don’t want to hear, ‘It was God’s plan,’ or ‘At least there’s no more pain.’ We just want to be listened to, and for our children to be remembered. These boxes help do that,” DeBouver says. Their Chicago chapter has since mended the troubled hearts of hundreds of families, and last year was awarded the organization’s group excellence award. Families at five children’s hospitals now receive angel memory boxes and “bravery bags,” a physical reminder that they’re not alone. For Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Month in February, the group is ramping up efforts to raise awareness, and to empower parents and kids with CHD. When Toth’s son, Luke, was younger, he thought all kids had “zippers” on their chest, in reference to noticeable scars from heart surgeries. Toth and other parents in the group are teaching

FOR MORE INFO mlhchicago.org facebook.com/mlhchicago (708) 232-MLHC their kids to be proud of their scars, not ashamed of them. “Parents need to be their child’s best advocate, and this includes reminding them that they should rock their scars,” Toth says. Through February, the group is hosting a “Rock Your Scar” photo exhibit at Trickster Gallery in Schaumburg. It displays photos of their children showing off their “zipper” scars, and also family photos remembering children lost to CHD. “My every waking moment is doing something to honor and remember my two children,” DeBouver says while showing a cellphone photo of Asher. “I want something positive and purposeful to come from their deaths and from my loss.” The couple’s Schaumburg home is adorned with baby photos of their two lost children. Each night before bedtime, they kiss photos of their children and whisper, “Good night.” Jerry Davich is a Chicago area dad and freelance writer.

Keeping a pulse on CHD u Most causes of CHDs are unknown with only 15-20 percent related to known genetic conditions.

u Surgery is often not a cure for CHDs, as many cases require additional operations and/or medications as adults.

u CHDs are the most common cause of infant death due to birth defects.

u People with CHDs face a life-long risk of health problems, such as issues with growth and eating, developmental delays, difficulty with exercise, heart rhythm problems, heart failure, sudden cardiac arrest or stroke.

u Roughly 25 percent of children born with a CHD will need heart surgery or other interventions to survive. u More than 85 percent of babies born with a CHD now live to at least age 18. However, some with more severe forms are less likely to reach adulthood.

u CHDs are now the most common heart problem in pregnant women. Source: Congenital Heart Public Health Consortium

Homemade pizza

BY MEGAN MURRAY ELSENER rapped inside with stir-crazy kids and out of ideas? Get those little hands kneading, chopping and grating in the kitchen. These winter days are the perfect time for families to spend time together creating meal masterpieces. Plus you all have to eat, so you might as well make it fun! Bust out the family aprons and give these three recipes a try:

Homemade pasta Ingredients: 2 ¾ cups unbleached flour 3 eggs 1 Tbsp. olive oil 1 tsp. salt ¼ cup water

Directions: In a food processor, add the flour, salt, eggs and oil and pulse until coarse crumbs form. With the motor running, add water and mix until the dough comes together and is sticky.

Put dough on well-floured surface and knead until it’s no longer sticky. Cover with plastic wrap and place in refrigerator for 30 minutes. Cut the chilled dough into eight equal pieces and use a pasta machine to flatten into the pasta thickness and shape of your preference. Place the finished pasta on a sheet pan lined with parchment and sprinkle lightly with flour until ready to cook. Boil water and add salt when rapidly boiling. Add pasta and

cook until it rises to the top slightly 2-4 minutes. Serve with your favorite sauce. Make it fun: Let the kids make the dough and help run it through the pasta machine. Try a few different pasta shapes from pappardelle to spaghetti with the different settings. Pasta is a trial-and-error process, so play until you figure out your favorite type of noodle.

Directions: Combine flour, honey, salt, instant yeast and olive oil in a large mixing bowl. Add 1 ¼ cup of cool water. Mix until the dough comes together in a coarse ball, at least 2 to 3 minutes by hand. Let dough rest uncovered for 5 minutes. Knead the dough by hand on a lightly floured surface. smooth and fairly tacky but not sticky. When you poke the dough with a clean finger, it should peel off, leaving only a slight residue. Lightly oil a bowl that’s twice the size of the dough ball. Roll the dough in the bowl to coat it with the oil and cover the top of the bowl tightly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least eight hours or overnight. If the plastic bulges, release the carbon dioxide buildup by lifting one edge of the plastic wrap and reseal. Once the dough rises, take it out of the refrigerator and set it on a lightly oiled work surface. If using a baking stone, put in oven on the middle rack and preheat oven to 500 degrees. Divide dough into four equal pieces. Dust surface with flour and sprinkle the dough lightly with flour. Gently press it into a round disk. With floured hands, carefully lift the dough and rest it on the back of your hands and

knuckles. Use the tips of your thumbs to stretch the outer edge so you create a thin dough with thicker edges. Place stretched pizza dough onto parchment paper. Use pizza sauce, Parmesan cheese and toppings as desired. Cook for 5-10 minutes, depending on size of pizza. Make it fun: Add sausage, roasted red peppers and goat cheese for a delectable bite. Add asiago cheese, goat cheese and mozzarella cheese for a tasty four-cheese pizza. Add basil and asiago cheese for a delicious take on margherita. Make your own signature pizza with your choice of toppings, ranging from pepperoni to mushrooms to peppers. Have a contest for who makes the besttasting pizza.

Biscuit Dough Doughnuts Ingredients: Peanut oil, for frying 2 cans large buttermilk biscuits 1 tsp. ground cinnamon ¼ cup sugar 3 cup confectioners’ sugar 5 Tbsp. milk 1 tsp. vanilla extract ¼ cup cocoa powder Sprinkles

Directions: Heat 2 inches of peanut oil in a large pot or Dutch oven to 350 degrees. Make the doughnut toppings. In a small bowl, mix together the cinnamon and sugar. In another small bowl, whisk together 1 cup of confectioners’ sugar, 2 Tbsp. of milk and 1 tsp. of vanilla extract to make vanilla icing. In another bowl, whisk together 1 cup of confectioners’ sugar, ¼ cup of cocoa powder and 3 Tbsp. of milk to make chocolate icing. In another bowl, put 1 cup confectioners’ sugar for powdered sugar. Set aside toppings. Take out the biscuits and lay on a

cutting board. Using a biscuit cutter or 1½-inch round cookie or biscuit cutter, cut a hole from the middle of each biscuit. Fry the cut doughnuts in the oil until golden, about 1-2 minutes. Use tongs to flip to fry the other side, 1-2 minutes. Remove doughnuts and drain quickly on paper towels. Toss the doughnuts in the toppings of your choice while they are still warm. Add sprinkles and enjoy. Make it fun: Fry up the doughnut holes as well and put into bag of either powdered sugar or cinnamon-sugar mix and shake! Let the kids take complete control of the toppings and decorating. The more sprinkles the better! Megan Murray Elsener is a freelance writer and suburban Chicago mother of three.

The annual event includes live music, children’s activities such as crafts and cooking demos, and to-die-for samples from local vendors (check out the chocolate chili). It’s also a great chance for amateur bakers to get their chocolate on at the Chocolate Bake-off Contest, where the winner gets crowned “Master Pastry Chef.” Take that, Gordon Ramsay! The science of

sleep(overs)

W

e think we speak for many Chicago families when we say that the Museum of Science & Industry is one of the most fun museums in a city. But even if you’ve descended into the coal mine more times than an actual miner, watched multiple generations of baby chicks enter the world in the hatchery or visited ted the U-505 Submarine enough times that you could give ive the tour, there’s always something new to discover. Case in point: MSI’s popular Science Snoozeums. Every kid who’s seen “Night at the Museum” has probably longed for a museum sleepover (minus the cursed exhibits, of course), and the Snoozeums are MSI’s answer to that. Families can explore all of their favorite exhibits until 11 p.m., try out science activities throughout the museum, complete

a scavenger hunt, and even make some scientific toys. Of course, it’s all leading up to lights out, when everyone bunks down throughout the museum—you may be catching your zzzz’s next to a giant heart or a real airplane. Whether you actually sleep or not, well, we make no promises

(complimentary sleep masks are available, but you may want to bring your own earplugs). But no matter what, there will be breakfast in the morning—and memories that are sure to last until they’re taking their own kids to experience all that MSI has to offer. Elizabeth Diffin

WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS

A garden of good ideas

I

f you thought there was no point in visiting Chicago Botanic Garden until the flowers start to bloom, think again. The garden’s Weekend Family Classes dig into some of kids’ favorite things—while adding a scientific twist. After exploring gingerbread in December and hot chocolate in January, the programming takes a colder, sweeter angle with Homemade Ice Cream (Feb. 20, 28 and March 5), where parents and kids work together to make their own batch of ice cream with a charmingly DIY technique you can re-create at home instead of buying more Ben & Jerry’s. But it also includes a study of tiny vanilla orchid seeds and a plant to take home, so it’s definitely more educational than a trip to Dairy Queen. In the early weeks of spring, the classes focus on Gumballs & Superballs (March 19, April 2 and 24). Families learn how people use parts of rainforest trees to make chewing

gum and rubber, then get to create their own bouncy ball and gum to take home. We live in the city of Wrigley, so you know great things are bound to happen. The classes are also a good reminder that even though we can’t always see them, plants are all around us—and full of potential for educational family fun. Elizabeth Diffin
