LAKE MICHIGAN
L
BY SHANNAN YOUNGER
ake Michigan, the world’s sixth largest freshwater lake, puts the “great” in Great Lakes. It’s saltfree and shark-free and enjoyment of it can also be, well, free. Living on its shores is one of the best parts of summer in Chicago. Don’t miss out on these fun ways to enjoy our natural treasure.
1
Become a Junior Ranger There are a few ways kids can learn about Lake Michigan at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, which has 15 miles of shoreline on the lake. The Beachcomber Junior Ranger worksheets encourage kids to explore the beach and take an hour or less to complete. Kids who finish get a junior ranger sticker. The regular Junior Ranger booklet takes longer to complete and has kids visit different spots in the park. When they’re done, they earn a Junior Ranger badge. The Paul H. Douglas Center for EnvironmenChicagoParent.com

tal Education is open to the public during the summer. Inside, kids can explore interactive exhibits and check out turtles, fish and snakes. Outside, the Nature Play Zone gives them a chance to explore and return to an old-school style of unstructured nature play with activities like building forts out of driftwood. Visitors can try kayaking (they have kid-sized kayaks) and paddle boarding on Friday afternoons at 1 p.m. at West Beach Memorial Day through Labor Day. CO N T I N U E D O N PAG E 6

Take the Lake Michigan Circle Tour If you are looking for a summer road trip, you can’t drive on the lake, but you can drive all the way around it. The Lake Michigan Circle Tour gives you a look at the lake from all sides. The route stays close to the shore using state highways. The complete circle is 900 miles and passes through Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan. Keep an eye out for the dozens of lighthouses along the way. Even if you don’t want to go around all of Lake Michigan, there are many great destinations along the shore that are great for a day trip or a week away. Find more information at lakemichigancircletour.com.
3
Help take care of the lake The Shedd Aquarium’s Great Lakes Action Days (GLADs) and Adopt-aBeach events put volunteers to work caring for the ecosystem and restoring habitats in and around Lakee Michigan. The days take place ace several times each month. Volunteers of all ages can join in and families are welcome. It’s a great opportunity for little ones to become citizen scientists and learn about the 3,500 species of plants and animals that depend on the lake for survival.
4
Weigh an anchor (or two) Heading out on a boat is a great way to experience Lake Michigan from a slightly

different perspective. There are numerous options for families looking to cruise, ranging from yachts to tall ships to speed boats and everything in between. Select a sail to see the sunset or the fireworks from Navy Pier or just to experience the lake and the stunning Chicago skyline. If your little one is itching to be the captain, the Chicago Yacht Club offers sailing classes for children as young as 5.
5
Watch the sunrise Watching the sun rise over the lake can be a magical sight, and makes for a fun outing if you your little ones are early risers. Montrose B Beach and Promontory Point are favo favorite spots in the city to see it. Pack a breakfast picnic and make it a sp special event. If you don’t want to be up super early, save this for la later in the summer. Sunrise on La Labor Day is at 6:20 a.m., more th than an hour later than it is on th the summer solstice in June.

REAL SIMPLE SUMMER
O
PHOTOS AND STORY BY AMANDA SIMKIN
ne of the best things about summer is that you get to take a break and slooooow down. Bedtimes are more lax, meals turn into spur-of-the-moment picnics, and the only homework in sight is chasing fireflies. It’s like all of Chicagoland breathes a collective sigh of relief that we survived another long and dreary winter and that the next 100 days of summer are ours for the taking.
But before you start making your summer bucket list, think back to what you loved about summer as a child. Drinking straight from the garden hose? Nightly kickball games with the neighborhood kids? Whatever it was, I guarantee that it didn’t involve screens. So while you’re planning your family’s summer adventures, don’t forget that simple is best. ChicagoParent.com
CPGP0517_009.indd 1
Stop and smell the flowers A sure sign of a summer day well spent is kids covered in dirt, sweat and smiles. Luckily there are tons of places around Chicagoland that provide adventures for kids. Over at the Nature Play Garden at the Chicago Botanic Garden, kids can run up and down beautifully sculpted landforms, hide inside willow trees and engage in other nature-based play. The Morton Arboretum has more than 16 miles of hiking trails for your family to get up close and personal with nature, in addition to their expansive and interactive Children’s Garden. And if you’re looking for a more urban outdoor setting, take advantage of the vast 606 trail and admire the innovative art and landscape displays presented along the nearly 3-mile-long path. Green City Market in Lincoln Park is one of the most expansive and beautiful farmers markets in Chicagoland. And it’s a great place to spend time together as a family. But in addition to the farm coming to you, you and your family can head to farm. Summer is the perfect time to pick your own fruit and veggies and there are many great local farms ripe for the picking. Work up a sweat If there was ever a “screen-free” season, summer would be it. Now that there are so many cool and unique playgrounds designed for kids of all ages and abilities, I guarantee that you will spend less time arguing over tablets and more time debating which park to visit next. Warren Park in Gurnee has more than four different playgrounds, but the highlight is the massive sandbox with dinosaur bones hidden inside. Independence Grove in Libertyville is the perfect spot for thrill-seeking kids who love to climb walls and scale bridges, and Indian Boundary Park on Chicago’s northside simply demands that you stop what you are doing to play hideand-seek in its wooden maze. Of course, no park debate is complete without mention of Chicago’s crown jewel, Maggie Daley Park. ChicagoParent.com

Stay up late I know, I know: kids need rest and schedules. But they also need incredible experiences. Let your kids be filled with brighteyed wonder while watching the stunning fireworks at Navy Pier on Wednesday and Saturday nights. Enjoy amazing views of

WHICH FEST IS BEST?
S
BY SHANNAN YOUNGER
ummer is synonymous with festival season in Chicago. Here are some great fests in both the city and the suburbs. While they have similar themes, each is unique. Pick the one nearest to you, or hit both for double the festival fun. Then you can make your own determination of which fest is best!
IF YOUR LITTLES LOVE ALL THINGS THAT FLY:
Chicago Air and Water Show Aug. 19-20 North Avenue Beach, 1600 N. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago cityofchicago.org
So maybe it’s more of a show than a fest, but this celebration of aviation is a summer staple in Chicago. There’s just something about seeing planes and parachuters soar over Lake Michigan! Plus, it’s the largest free show of its kind in the U.S. North Avenue Beach gets crowded very early, but Montrose Harbor is another option for watching the show.

FESTS IF YOUR FAMILY IS LOOKING FOR NORDIC FUN:
Andersonville Midsommarfest
Midsommarfest comes from this northside neighborhood’s deep Swedish roots and makes Swedish traditions and tasty treats accessible to all. There is lots of music as well as shopping. This year, organizers have revamped the kids’ area, located on Summerdale and Clark in the Alamo Shoes parking lot. It features fitness and art activities as well as a Dream Big Performing Arts workshop. A pet parade takes place on Saturday. A $10 donation is requested of adults and kids 12 and under are free.

Irish culture abounds for the family in storytelling, dance, plays and music. There are also magic shows, a petting zoo and carnival rides. Consider entering your little one in the Bonnie Baby contest or the Red Hair and Freckle Face contest. Just imagine: a county fair complete with food and games, then mix in a little bit of Comic Con with superheroes and villains everywhere you turn, and top it off with a small-town atmosphere. Metropolis, Ill., officially designated as the hometown of Superman, embodies the spirit of small-town America, and each year it welcomes more than 50,000 fans (most in costume) to share their love of the Man of Steel. At just five-and-a-half hours from Chicago, a visit to the southern Illinois town makes for a perfect road trip. Fun game: see how many times you spot the word “super” in Clark Kent’s neck of the woods. CO N T I N U E D O N PAG E 2 0

The 2017 festival is dedicated to the memory of Noel Neill, the actress who played Lois Lane in The Adventures of Superman television show. She was a frequent guest at the celebration and Metropolis has embraced the leading lady with a life-sized bronze statue in her honor. The action-filled weekend packs enough punch for any superhero-loving family with music, a carnival, a 5K run, a bike trek and a car show. Little superheroes can join the fun by entering the Little Miss Super Girl and Super Boy pageant. And don’t miss these other super activities: • Get to know some celebrity guests at a Q&A session. Then grab an autograph. This year features Erica Durance from Smallville, Margot Kidder from the Superman movies, and Sarah Douglas, who played Ursa in the first two movies. • Meet your favorite comic artists and writers. Stop by Artist Alley to meet some artists and writers, then buy one of their creations for a one-of-a-kind souvenir. • Come in costume. If you’re rocking your best Lex Luthor or Lois Lane look, you might as well enter the Super Hero and Villains Costume Contest. After all, you could walk away with $2,000! • Pose for a photo. Don’t leave before you take at least one shot, selfie or otherwise, with the 15-foot Superman statue found on Superman Square. The massive Man of Steel is hard to miss. During the festival, Metropolis’ accommodations fill up fast, so make like a speeding bullet and book them now. For the best home-cooked breakfast (ask for their red velvet waffles with chocolate 5 p.m. June 8-2 p.m. June 11 chips) and Free admission the best supermancelebration.net hospitality out there, try staying at the family-friendly Summer’s Riverview Mansion B&B (summersbedandbreakfast.com). Ferris Bueller’s Day Off... for kids
G
BY AMANDA SIMKIN
rowing up, I longed to be Ferris Bueller. Why? I wanted to emulate his carefree nature and how he fully experienced all that Chicago has to offer. And Ferris was right: the things that John Hughes chose to highlight in his classic film were “so choice.”
While we probably don’t want our kids to skip class to attend a Cubs game or perform on a parade float, we can take them on a kiddie version of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, sometime before senior ditch day rolls around.
Art Institute of Chicago With more that 300,000 works of art, there is something for everyone at Chicago’s world-renowned art museum. Before your family leaves home, create your own personal museum guide using the Art Institute’s interactive online JourneyMaker. You can plan your entire trip so you won’t spend hours wandering around the entire museum looking for that picture with the © 1986 - Paramount Pictures dots (Psst… it’s called “A Sunday on La Grande Jatte”). No visit to the Art Institute is complete without a visit to Chagall’s breathtaking windows or a stop at the Ryan Center for family-friendly art projects and activities. Kids under 14 and Chicago teens 14-17 receive free admission. artic.edu.
Willis (ahem, Sears) Tower © 1986 - Paramount Pictures
Chicago is known as the city of neighborhoods, and the best way to see how they fit together is to get a bird’s-eye view from America’s tallest building, Willis Tower (not counting the antenna). For those afraid of heights, there are tons of activities within the Skydeck exhibit to distract and entertain you. Just keep your eyes averted from “The Ledge,” where daredevils can stand 4.3 feet away from the Skydeck and 1,353 feet above the busy streets of Chicago. Kids under 3 are free. theskydeck.com. Parades I hate to burst your bubble, but when Ferris danced on the float during the Von Steuben Day parade, it was a lie! Typically the GermanAmerican celebration (germanday.com) is held on a Saturday in September—definitely not a day Ferris would have been in school. But guess what? There are still tons of fun parades for Chicagoans to enjoy this summer. My family’s favorite is the Pride Parade (chicagopride.gopride. com). On June 25, enjoy the rainbow-colored celebration along with more than 800,000 spectators. Just be sure to go early and bring ear protection for the little ones! 30 Summer 2017 • goingplaces

Wrigley Field Cubs tickets have always been the hottest in town, and now that they are the reigning World Champions, it is even more difficult to score tickets. But it’s worth the effort, especially if you snag some for Kids’ Sundays, when the first 1,000 kids in attendance to receive wristbands can run the bases after the game. Even if your kid is having an epic meltdown, don’t leave the Friendly Confines without

One of the most iconic scenes from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is when Ferris visits the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Unfortunately, it’s no longer open to the public, but there is still another great option to teach kids all about the power of a dollar—the Money Museum at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Activities in the interactive exhibits include comparing real and counterfeit money, designing currency, and seeing what a million dollars really looks like. Visitors can take home a bag of “Fed Shreds” too. The museum is open on weekdays, except for bank holidays. And it has free admission for everyone. chicagofed.org.

ROLLER COASTER ROAD TRIP
I
BY KATIE NIEKERK
f I were granted one superpower, I’d choose the ability to fly. And if anything in reality comes close to flying—at least, without having to sign a waiver—it’s riding a roller coaster. In other words, I’m a coaster fiend. The weightlessness and gut-wrenching drops are two reasons why, but if I had to pick just one, it’s that for somewhere around 120 seconds, coasters allow for a sense of sheer exhilaration that you just don’t find in everyday life.
Since I want the same good things for you, I’m here to recommend the top six roller coasters in the Midwest, including a couple that even smaller kids can enjoy. Happy coasting!
Tornado, Adventureland Altoona, Iowa; adventurelandpark.com Even riders just 3 feet, 6 inches tall can board Adventureland’s first wooden coaster, which measures 3,200 feet long. The track borders a small lake and features three drops that are suitable for kids—though the first might score you some airtime, depending on where you’re seated. 36 Summer 2017 • goingplaces

Raging Bull, Six Flags Great America Gurnee; sixflags.com/greatamerica Yep, I’ll say it: Raging Bull is my all-time favorite. The world’s first hyper-twister coaster, this towering ride is 202 feet tall, 5,057 feet long and races at 73 miles per hour. The first incline creeps up 20 stories before plunging at a 65-degree slope, and the track is almost a mile long. I’ll never forget riding it last summer right as the sun set. Try it, people—you’ll see what I mean!

England’s magical side

STORY AND PHOTOS BY DANIELLE BRAFF
f you have a true Harry Potter fan in your family—Muggle or otherwise—then take the trip across the pond to England, where you can walk lk through the real Diagon Alley and stand a foot away from Harry Potter’s hair (yes, he needed a littlee help in that department). England is filled with Harry Potter magic, and it’s also a super-easy trip with kids, onderful first vacamaking it a wonderful tion overseas. system is awesome, so you won’t need to rent a car, and the fact that everyone speaks English makes it incredibly easy for us Americans. It’s a fantastic vacation (or holiday, as the English say) for adults and children alike. The most significant stop on a Harry Potter trip is to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London, which is just outside London. It’s next door to where most of the Harry Potter scenes were filmed, and this studio holds nearly every costume, prop and set from the film. Best of all, the studio explains how the films were made and executed—and some areas are hands-on. You can actually walk through the Hogwarts Express train, peak into Harry Potter’s room under the staircase, make your way through Diagon Alley and learn about how they trained the animals that were used in the movies.

You can also sit on a broomstick just like Harry Potter did during his Quidditch games, with a green screen in the background— and you can buy a *very expensive* DVD of your child flying. It’s easy to spend an entire day here, but our kids were done after about four hours (they’re 5 and 8). Next, continue your Harry Potter experience with an overnight trip to Oxford, a city that houses what’s debatably the oldest and top university in the world (founded in 1546). It’s two hours outside of London and accessible by bus or train. While some areas of the university are closed to the public (you can’t go inside most of the libraries), you should check out Christ Church College, which is not only beautiful, but was also the inspiration for Hogwarts’ Great Hall in Harry Potter world. When you return to London, you can

T R AV E L stand in a winding line at the King’s Cross train station to see (and take a picture at) Platform 9 ¾. Be prepared to wait for at least an hour, though. Once you’ve had your Harry Potter fix, you’re ready to move on and see everything else in England. In America, kids may have only read about royalty, but in England, they can actually see it. At the Tower of London, check out crowns that royalty wore hundreds of years ago and still wear today. And if your kids are brave enough, they can see where (and how) people were tortured in the Tower. If you didn’t manage to score Hamilton tickets in Chicago, you may have better luck in London, where the show opens in November. Productions in London are just as big, if not bigger, as they are here, so make sure you get a few lined up before your trip. We took the kids to see a production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and they delighted in the story, as well as the fact that they could eat candy floss (cotton candy) during it.
The best part of England? Everyone is incredibly polite and helpful. Our 8-year-old asked if the bad guys there chew with their mouth closed—and she even learned a few manners of her own. Brits are also very tolerant of children. When our 5-year-old failed to mind the gap on the Tube (translation: she dropped her beloved stuffed animal in the gap on her way off London’s train during rush hour), they actually stopped the entire Tube system and grabbed her toy for her. England, we’ll be back.

hey’re too young, they wouldn’t be interested, and what if they won’t sit still? While these are all legit fears for not taking our kids to the theater, here are six performances that’ll guarantee rapt attention and permissive theatergoing—for every last member of the family.
Physical Festival Chicago If your kids like to run as opposed to walk and to stand (sometimes on one tippy toe) as opposed to sit, we have a theatrical festival right up their busy, busy alleys. The Physical Festival will celebrate nine days of international performances, master classes with guest artists, and plenty of exposure to artistic endeavors that’ll defy concepts of physicality, space and gravity. (Remind you of anyone else you know?) June 2-10 Stage 773, 1225 W. Belmont Ave., Chicago physicalfestival.com
The Wiz The Wizard of Oz has been a phenomenon since 1900; the tale of Dorothy and her crew has been made into multiple stage plays, found its way into graphic novels, and made Judy Garland a household name. However, it’s 42 Summer 2017 • goingplaces

the 1978 film The Wiz (starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson) that inspired Emerald City Theatre’s latest success. A mix of rock, gospel, soul and silver sneakers, it’s never been quite this nice to ‘ease on down the road,’ whether yellow brick or the plain ol’ Chicago kind. Through June 8 The Apollo Theatre, 2540 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago emeraldcitytheatre.com
James and the Giant Peach If we had to play favorites with Roald Dahl’s literary canon, James and the Giant Peach would be near the top of the list. What’s not to love about enchanted trees, insect allies and a rollicking adventure inside a magical peach? The all-new musical tale is from the duo of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, fresh from their La La Land win. What’s peachier than that? Well, Saturdays feature a breakfast buffet and meetand-greet, perfect for pulling up a chair—or branch—with the characters your family has fallen in love with. Ninja warriors welcome
A
BY ELIZABETH DIFFIN

hh, summer. A time when families come together to eat corn on the cob, play wiffleball, and watch American Ninja Warrior. The NBC show has been a hit since it debuted on the network in 2012, but it’s not just for couch potatoes anymore. Ninja Warrior mania has led to the creation of training gyms across the country—including three in our area that offer classes and programs for your little ninjas-in-training. So get off your couch and head to one of these awesome options. We promise it will make your family TV time all the sweeter.

Windy City Ninjas 2500 W. Bradley Place, Chicago windycityninjas.com What it’s like: This 10,000-squarefoot gym, tucked into the family-friendly Bradley Place, has a tagline that says it all: “Overcome. Persevere. Achieve.” The focus is on having fun and working hard, which is communicated by the coaches, who give clear, specific (and patient!) instructions to the kiddos. What to try: You’ll want to test out everything, but the standouts are the triple warped wall (8-, 10- and 14 1/2-feet, with a 12-foot cutout), devil steps and double salmon ladder. Kids love playing Team Ninja Warrior, where they can try multiple obstacles, relay-style, at special events. What makes it awesome: This is truly an all-ages facility, offering a soft parkourstyle play area for kids as young as 2. It even has a warped wall just for the littles, topping out at 6 1/2 feet. (You haven’t lived until you’ve seen a preschooler take on a warped wall.) What it offers: WCN has classes for kids and adults, plus Friday Family Fun Nights where the whole crew is welcome to ninja out together. Check the website for day-off camps (full- and half-day options), open gym times and birthday party info. Who you’ll know: Coach Zak Krisciunas competed on season 8 of American Ninja Warrior. Chicago Ninja Academy What it’s like: Imagine a traditional lifting gym, then add some ninja equipment, and you have the Chicago Ninja Academy. The 11,000-square-foot facility in a suburban industrial park used to be a Crossfit gym until ninjamania hit in 2014. What to try: The 14- and 18-foot Warped Walls are always a hit, but little legs really excel on smaller apparatus like the quintuple step and balance obstacles. What makes it awesome: I was impressed by the emphasis on the “ninja code,” which is about teamwork, respect and encouragement. There aren’t quite as many obstacles here, but the coaches improvise with ninja-themed calisthenics and smaller equipment. And while classes are for ages 5 and up, there is a small play space for younger siblings to keep busy. What it offers: Kids are divided into age groups for their classes, where they’ll get to try six to 10 obstacles. There are also kids’ camps and

birthday parties, plus classes for ages 13 and up. And for serious ANW hopefuls, there’s personal training for kids and adults. Who you’ll know: Owner and head coach Nate Aye competed on ANW three times, and several other athletes have also appeared on the show.
Junior Ninja Warriors Chicago 2915 W. Montrose Ave., Chicago jrninjawarriors.com What it’s like: This airy, colorful space on the edge of Ravenswood Manor was the area’s first ninja warrior gym designed especially for kids. In 2017, JNW is expanding—keep an eye out for locations in Naperville and Libertyville. What to try: JNW has a kids’ version of the salmon ladder, in addition to other obstacles, like Cliffhanger and Cannonball Alley, that build uild arm strength. And my 7-year-old nephew loved the Jumping Spider (and the 8-, 10-, 12- and 14-foot Warped Walls, obvs). What makes it awesome: When kids need to get their energy out, there’s a large gym area for basketball, ball, soccer, floor hockey—or —or just plain running. Moms and dads will appreciate the snack bar with “Ninja Fuel” where they can hang while the kiddos get their ninja on. ChicagoParent.com
CPGP0517_053.indd 1
What it offers: Classes, camps, birthW day p parties and open gym for kids (6 and up), and even a Ninja Competition that’s just like the show. Adult classes are also available able, in part partnership with CrossTown Fitness. Who you’ll know: Manager of Course Operations Ethan Swanson made it to Stage 2 of the Vegas finals on ANW. A number of tours are available, including Game Day and Non-Game Day, VIP and Living Legend Tours. Game days are great to get a sense of the excitement building before the Cubbies hit the field. Nongame day tours give you a chance to visit the Cubs’ dugout, visitors’ clubhouse and press box. Daily Tours, $25 per person, last more than an hour, rain or shine, and include walking and climbing steps. Experiencing the ballpark in the more intimate setting of a tour gives you a firsthand look at what makes Wrigley so special, from the historic touches to the World Series memorabilia and the recent renovations. Our tour, led by the humorous and knowledgeable Robert Daniels and attended by home and opposing team fans, started out on the field. It’s astonishing and supremely gratifying standing out there, especially in the hushed quiet of the almost-empty stadium. You can watch the groundskeepers preparing the field. You can shuffle your feet in the gravel that leads up to the grass and think about all the baseball greats that have stood in that same spot. Soak in the awe and take tons of photos. While the Upper Deck might be home to the cheap seats, it really does provide an exceptional view of the ballpark. Perched up high, our group heard our guide’s stories of home runs, stadium history and ballplayer antics. You probably know Wrigley Field is the second oldest ballpark in the U.S., but did you know it was originally home to the Chicago Whales and that the Chicago Bears have played more games there than at Soldier Field? We discussed what it’s like inside the historic manual scoreboard (hot with no plumbing), talked about the iconic ivy that took root 80 years ago (Daniels says Anthony Rizzo and Dave Martinez recently found a ball in there that they think is at least 20 years old) and marveled about being the last ball club to add lights. The park’s nauticalstyle flags are a nod to the Wrigley family’s passion for sailing. We hope to see a lot of Ws flying up there this season. Either way, we’ll continue to bleed Cubbie blue.

Berry BONANZ A
A
BY JOSANNAH TERRY
s a girl I took a vacation in Maine and I still remember the thrill of picking strawberries and popping them into a bucket or, better yet, straight into my mouth. My fruit-picking has taken me to Wisconsin, too, for raspberry picking that filled buckets to the brim. There is something joyful about picking fruit off the vine, and I’m planning to carry on the tradition with my toddler this summer. Here’s a little tip from someone who’s been there, picked that: Don’t head
out to a farm without connecting with an actual person to confirm that whatever you want to pick is available that day! I’ve headed down a few dirt roads only to be disappointed. So save yourself some frustration (especially if your car ride involves kiddos) and call ahead. If the thought of packing up a picnic basket, ditching the busy city and enjoying some good ol’ fashioned berry-picking fun appeals to you, it’s time to pack up your crew and head out! Fresh air and tasty berries await.
Real simple strawberries in Illinois The open landscape and rustic approach of Olive Berry Acres (oliveberryacres. com) fits my ideal berry picking scenario, so I reached out ChicagoParent.com

to owners Nik and Michelle Weber to get more details. Located just 70 miles from downtown Chicago near Mazon, the drive won’t make
you go road trip bonkers. And when you arrive, your family can even have a picnic on the lawn. CO N T I N U E D O N PAG E 5 8

The farm offers pick-yourown strawberries around the first week of June, but conditions can change quickly, so connect with the Webers to confirm that U-pick strawberries will be available. You can call or even text them. Michelle recommends arriving as soon as the farm opens (the early bird gets the worm, or in this case, the amazinglooking strawberries). She also suggests bringing water and wearing sunscreen. And bring along rainboots or mud shoes, since the fields can be messy. Your kiddos can pick some veggies here, too, as the Webers are expecting green beans to be available for U-pick alongside the strawberries.
Blueberry bliss in Indiana There is something so comforting about biting into homemade blueberry muffins. Get the goods to make them at Stateline Blueberries (statelineblueberries. com) in Michigan City, Ind. This 35-acre blueberry haven offers nine varieties throughout the

growing season. That could make a whole lot of muffins! This family-run business has been planting blueberw ries since 1942, so they know n their stuff. The picking season spans roughly from the last week of June to mid-August. But they agree that you should always call ahead. Once you find the right time, your family can happily roam around and snatch up berries from wherever you please.
Raspberry party in Michigan Raspberries top my list of fave foods, so The Extraordinary Berry (theextra ordinaryberry.com) pretty much had me at hello
with its photos of golden and red varieties. Blackberries are a bonus, too! This berry bliss is just a couple hours away from Chicago in Benton Harbor, Mich. They open for berry business on June 23 and the website offers quite an irresistible invitation to visitors: “Walk the berry fields, taste the different varieties, enjoy the beautiful outdoors, pick the perfect berry, bring a picnic lunch, spend the afternoon with us.” Sounds idyllic to me! espite our notoriously fickle climate (or as my Florida-based mom might put it, “you’re not biking in that weather, are you?!”), Chicago has become a bicycling destination. In fact, it was ranked as the number one bike-friendly city in America by Bicycling magazine in 2016. Infrastructure improvements, level terrain (that flatness had to be good for something!) and the second-largest bike share program in the country boosted our city ahead of what many consider biking “meccas” such as Portland, New York, Austin and Seattle. ChicagoParent.com
CPGP0517_059.indd 1
Chicagoland is blessed with an extraordinary amount of places to visit on two wheels, but the best spot to start on your biking journey is right at your local bike shop. Ezra Hozinsky of Green Machine Cycles in North Center—a shop that sells bikes and gear for all ages—encourages everyone to ask questions when going in to shop for a bike. “The best shops want the questions, and lots of them,” he explains. “No matter what you’re looking for in your biking experience, your local bike shop can help you find it without feeling intimidated.” And whether you’re into bouncing from neighborhood to neighborhood or looking for more of a day-long ride, here are four ideas to get you started with your whole family.
1
Lakefront Trail Is it cliché to mention? Yes. Is there a reason it’s cliché? Yes. The Lakefront Trail continues to improve for cyclists and can be a great place for beginners and families looking for great city views and continued access to the city and lake at large. For thinner crowds, start around the Museum Campus and head south. choosechicago.com CO N T I N U E D O N PAG E 6 0

The 606 While The 606 is becoming as cliché to mention as the Lakefront Path, this 2.7-mile elevated rail conversion path offers unprecedented access to the western neighborhood parks and amenities with access points and ramps available about every quarter mile. Available for all riders of all abilities, a day on The 606 is sure to provide a great urban riding adventure. the606.org
3
Illinois Prairie Path Located mostly in DuPage County, the Illinois Prairie Path is the country’s first rail-totrail conversion and spans 61 miles over three branches, originating in Wheaton. These trails connect suburbs that aren’t typically accessible to each other by bike and can make for a great family outing. ipp.org
4
Des Plaines River Trail The Des Plaines River Trail is a nature oasis in Lake and Cook counties. The trail runs along the Des Plaines River and offers stunning scenery. Because it is in the river’s flood zone, be sure to check conditions after heavy rains as conditions might become dicey. Otherwise, this trail offers rides for the most amateur of cyclists to more advanced off-road adventurers. lcfpd. org/dprt ChicagoParent.com
