Get ready for your life to change!

Mission: To connect moms and moms-to-be

Here we are, face-toface, middle-aged dad with older kids and, over across the page, young mom with two little ones. But as Lindsay and I compared notes when Bump Club and Beyond and Chicago Parent partnered up to create Hey Baby, we would most certainly agree that nothing is so life changing as becomDAN HALEY ing a parent. That was the advice offered to me about 30 years ago as my wife Mary and I prepared to adopt Ben. I nodded politely. But until he was in my arms, until every habit I had was changed by becoming a father, I didn’t know the truth. And it was the same lifeaffirming truth 19 years ago when Mariah joined our family. It is love and it is sometimes pain and it is forever. At Chicago Parent, we’re enthusiastic about joining forces with Bump Club and Beyond to offer you this essential guide to being a new parent in Chicagoland.

In 2010 I was lucky enough to give birth to two babies: my first daughter AND Bump Club and Beyond. As I embraced pregnancy and motherhood, I was lucky to have the BCB community supporting me along the way. Bump Club began out of my own desire to meet other moms-to-be LINDSAY during my pregnancy. PINCHUK Five years later, Bump Club has grown far beyond what I could have imagined! We continue to evolve and deliver on our mission of connecting moms and moms-to-be with the best pregnancy and parenting resources—and most importantly, each other. I am incredibly excited to introduce you to Hey Baby, the newest member of the BCB and Chicago Parent families. This publication is a guide to everything that comes with being an expectant and new parent in Chicago. Our recommendations, tips and information are to ensure that your journey into parenthood is as seamless as possible! The evolution of Bump Club would never have happened without the support of so many moms and moms-to-be in Chicago. Thank you for your devotion to our community. We hope that you enjoy reading Hey Baby as much as we enjoyed creating it for you!

A MODERN MOM’S ABCS

26 things you need to know your first year

A

Your baby’s spit-up might look like modern art when it ends up on your favorite blouse. Check out the real thing the first Wednesday of every month with 11:30 a.m. Stroller Tours at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

B

Bubbles Academy is a Chicago mom’s institution. The giant open play space is perfect to entertain babies on a rainy or snowy Chicago day—and every day in between.

C

Cha-ching. Raising a baby takes serious cash. A family earning more than $106,540 can expect to spend $407,820, the USDA reports.

D

Change baby’s diaper in style at The Field Museum’s awardwinning facilities. Changing stalls provide privacy and tot areas are outfitted with teeny toilets.

E

There’s no easier way to get around our great city

and adjoining ‘burbs than Chicago’s El. Pro tip: Invest in an easy-tofold stroller to keep it stress-free.

F

Olivier Parisien, 6½ months

Visit the Farm in the Lincoln Park Zoo on Wednesdays and Fridays for Mr. Singer’s all-ages free concert. Pro tip: Go on a Wednesday in the summer and hit up the Green City Market for a picnic. When the weather turns, the market moves to the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum!

G

Go green! Cloth diapering isn’t as intimidating as it sounds. Several local diaper services, including Green Diaper Babies, make the process easier for p busyy parents.

Once the epidural has worn off, personalized keepsakes will become treasured possessions, like the Keepsake Name Loveys and Keepsake Birth Story Blankets at The Red Balloon (3 locations in Chicago).

L

You’re never going to stay the word “boob” as much as you will now.

Breathe deep and say

with Mommy & Me yoga. It’s a peaceful way to bond with your little one—and helps you rediscover your pre-baby shape.

O

Unsure of the priority when it comes to organics? Here’s a a tip: Insist on organic versions of produce that retains the most pesticide residue such as apples. Skip for produce such as bananas and pineapples, if you wish. For prepared food, we like Happy Family.

It’s way more fun when you share this rite of passage with others at The Lactation Station at Sweet Pea’s Studio, 3717 N. Ravenswood, Chicago, or at The Lactation Partners’ drop-in clinic at Sprout San Francisco in Chicago’s Wicker Park.

M

Malls and maternity leave are the perfect match! North Bridge has two New Mom/Expectant Mom parking spots and a great nursing lounge in Nordstrom. 900 North

Michigan Shops has some new mom staples: Galt Toys + Galt Baby, Preggers Maternity and lululemon! We also like the Fashion Outlets of Chicago and Oakbrook Center. All are great places to go for a walk on a windy day!

et’s face it: Pregnancy is one of the few times in life when “gotta have it” actually turns into having it—with food, at least. Those crafty cravings can drive you half-insane, especially when they strike in the middle of the night. Our advice: Stock up with these fun Chicago twists on some of the most common cravings. More than a few babies have M dr driven their mothers to the sour ssatisfaction of a jar of pickles. For a true Chicago spin, check out Puckered Pickle Co., which produces three varieties of pickles right on the city’s west side, and Chipico’s kosher pickles, made in Chicago since the 1920s. All that puckering up will pay off with that made-tobe-kissed new baby.

Iff you’re going tto crave hot dogs, Chicago’s the place to do it. Hot dog stands can be found in most every town, or keep some Vienna Beef Franks on hand for when the need strikes. And depending on your toppings, you can topple multiple cravings at once (but remember: no ketchup).

No matter your due date, ice cream leads the pack in cravings. Our pick is Oberweis Dairy, with more than two dozen locations throughout Chicagoland. Bonus: Oberweis doesn’t use milk that contains artificial growth hormones to make its creamy treat.

The oil and salt of the picnicfriendly potato chip also makes it popular among munchie momsto-be. Get your chip fix with hometown faves Jays Potato Chips (now owned by Snyder’s of Hanover), which gives you 14 flavor options, or Vitner’s Potato Chips, which still produces its snacks in Freeport.

Most women crave chocolate even when they’re eating for just one, so baby’s arrival provides a welcome excuse for a little sweet indulgence. Fortunately, the largest chocolate manufacturer in North America is right in our backyard, thanks to Blommer Chocolate Company. National expert picks the must-have gear for Chicago parents

T

BY ELIZABETH DIFFIN PHOTOS BY THOMAS KUBIK

alk about choices! When you become a parent, you trade your complicated Starbucks order for the smorgasbord of baby gear options. But how do you decide which high chair is best or which car seat can be installed easily? We sat down with Jamie Grayson, aka “The Baby Guy” and Bump Club and Beyond’s gear expert, to talk strollers, carriers and all the essentials.

Basics Oh the places you’ll go! When it comes to strollers, Grayson recommends the UPPAbaby VISTA ($729.99), which features a bassinet and a reversible toddler seat, “enormous” sun canopies to keep baby shaded, a compact fold and a large basket for your diaper bag. Plus, for tall parents, the handlebar is adjustable up to 42.5 inches. Baby wearing is all the rage, and you can take baby on all kinds of adventures with the Beco Gemini ($130). The back cross straps lend additional comfort and support, which is helpful with a 40-pound weight limit. And

at six or seven months, turn your little one around so they can take in the world. For city parents, a cab-friendly infant car seat is essential. That’s where the CYBEX Aton 2 ($299.95) comes in. Its European routing path for the seatbelt means you can move it from car-to-car with ease and still know it’s secure. It’s also lightweight (nine pounds), and is compatible with most major strollers. Once your little one weighs more than 35 pounds or is longer than 30 inches, it’s time to switch to a convertible car seat. Grayson likes the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Convertible ($329.99) because it’s rear-facing up to 45 pounds, which is a safety perk. The shape gives parents a little additional leg room, and it’s easy to install. If you’re going to splurge on one item, this is it.

Overrated Chances are your biggest diaper blow-outs won’t happen in the safety of the nursery. So forget the changing table (unless you’re suffering with excess space), and pop a changing pad on a dresser. Don’t bother with a wipe warmer, no matter how sweet and soft your baby’s little bottom. As Grayson says: “Wipe warmers are a joke.”

332

HeyBaby2014_32.indd 1

HEY BABY tion,” Grayson says. “Everyone is shaped different; everybody’s nipples are different. So if you’re using a flange that’s the wrong size, it’s really, really painful and it can lead to damage. … And lube those nipple shields up!”

Playtime

Necessities The Stokke Tripp Trapp ($249) doesn’t look like your typical high chair, but it’s Grayson’s favorite. The chair is designed to fit a standard 30inch dining table for maximum parent-child interaction. Plus the adjustable foot support prevents feet from dangling and throwing little spines out of alignment. For changing time, Grayson recommends the Skip Hop Pronto ($30), a portable changing station that stows your diapers, wipes and ointment. And the stylish patterns mean you can keep it in your living room, the car or as a faux clutch.

Sure, it sounds a little gross, but the NoseFrida ($15) will be a lifesaver the first time your baby comes down with a cold. Just put the tube in the baby’s nostril and the mouthpiece in your mouth and literally suck the snot out. Don’t worry: the filters keep the nasty stuff from going anywhere.

The skinny on pumps “You want to make sure your (breast) pump can use different sized flanges, because it is not like a one-sizefits-all situa-

Many a parent has deemed the beloved bouncy seat “a lifesaver” for the magical way it lulls baby to sleep. For an adjustable option, try the BabyBjorn Bouncer Balance Soft ($199.99) with three positions and a flat fold for storage or a trip to Grandma’s. For something that’s bigger than your typical play yard, Grayson likes the Joovy Room2 ($149.99). It’s 50 percent larger than the standard, so it lasts well into the toddler years. And the easy assembly is a gift to sleep-deprived parents everywhere. To swing or not to swing? Grayson’s take: “Try a friend’s swing, see if your baby likes it, and then go swing shopping. But swings are enormous. (They) have a massive footprint, so they’re just not that practical in a lot of apartments.” Lila Pinchuk (above) tries out the Primo Viaggio Convertible, while Sam Levine (left) enjoys the view from the Tripp Trapp.

HEY BABY

Bump Club Chicago 3 a.m. Feeding Club What do you wish you knew going into labor & delivery that you didn’t? I was incredibly afraid of labor, but it really wasn’t so bad. I wish someone had told me to stop worrying so much about it and spend more time learning about how to care for the baby after it is born.

Beata That the pain can cause vomiting!

To eat before the epidural! It was a long 10 hours after I got the epidural; I was starving!

Aimee That the birth plan is great, but it usually doesn’t go as you plan. And that is OK. Stop overthinking. Caring for a tiny baby after it’s born is a MUCH bigger challenge than giving birth.

That having your traditional-minded mother in the room is not a good idea! I was more exhausted battling her on my decisions than the 36 hours of labor itself.

When it comes to the crib mattress, The Baby Guy Jamie Grayson suggests going as organic as possible since your baby (hopefully) sleeps a lot, and you don’t want the flame retardants and toxins found in regular matJAMIE GRAYSON tresses close to their face. His pick: Naturepedic, which is waterproof, uses organic cotton and offers a 2-in-1 option that flips from a firm infant side to a more cushy toddler option. “Your mattress is an investment and you’re going to be using it a long, long time,” Grayson says. “People spend $1,000 on a crib, $600 on a stupid stylish diaper bag, but you want a $100 car seat and a $40 mattress. The priorities are backward.”

S

o you’re about to tackle the nursery, but everything you’re seeing seems a little bit … done. Rachel Glasson, owner of Twinkle Twinkle Little One, an upscale baby and child boutique, offers up some fresh ideas for readying the most important room in your house.

COLOR:

For your little lady’s nursery, try mixing plum and navy or mint with coral. The newest guy in your life can give the combo of mint and navy a spin. Towing the gender-nonspecific line? “Metallics have become the new neutral,” says Glasson. “Using gold and silver to replace the beige and gray tones is a great way to give your nursery a little pop.”

focuscope ChiCago oak Park oak Brook

DECOR:

Nautical is a strong trend, and perfect for either gender. Vertical stripes and coastal accents like a painted driftwood anchor add classy, cool touches. Wanting to try out the trend of quotation wall art but looking for something a bit more personal? Glasson and crew create fully customizable word art to provide meaningful pieces, whether it’s a favorite phrase or the lullaby sung to baby in utero.

our doctor has uttered those dreaded words— “Bed rest.” But before you resign yourself to a sentence of boredom and frustration, take heart! Here are some tried ‘n’ true ways to make the most out of an unplanned staycation:

veryone and her doula knows that healthy babies come from healthy mamas. But where to begin? Here are some of Chicagoland’s favorite places to exercise during pregnancy. (Note: Check with your health care provider before starting anything new!)

Yoga:

“Making time for mom can be one of the biggest challenges,” says certified prenatal yoga instructor Jessie YoungNovak. Prenatal yoga is a good place to start. It conditions the pelvic structure and encourages posture—excellent for ever-changing bodies and babies! Practicing breathing and mindfulness allows you to let go of expectations and go with the flow—an excellent tool once the baby arrives, too.

Whether splashing with your baby or channeling your inner mermaid, water exposure is great for you both. Debating a Mom ‘n’ Me class? “One of the overlooked benefits is the skin-to-skin contact, which aids in bonding between parents and children … and takes advantage of babies’ natural love for the water,” says Alison Jung of Goldfish Swim School Chicago.

Pilates:

For a highly customizable practice during each stage of pregnancy, devotees rave about Pilates. “Women who have done Pilates before their pregnancies have the strength and muscle memory to ‘bounce back’ postpartum (and) have a positive experience during delivery,” says Alicia Zabrocki, studio owner and certified Pilates instructor at Pilates Center of Chicago.

Once your fam gets ahold of Secret Agent 23 Skidoo’s hip-hop tracks on The Perfect Quirk, it’ll soon be all you’ll hear. 23 Skidoo—who once shared the stage with the likes of Run DMC and Mos Def—lays down some truly enjoyable “positive half pint party music.” (Your kids will dig it, too.)

Little Theatre 2933 N. Southport Ave., Chicago (773) 529-2690 emeraldcitytheatre.com Photo by Aileen McGroddy/Emerald City Theatre

The Little Theatre lobby, designed by The Land of Nod.

The uniquely created theater is just for kids 0-5 with their parents in a ‘no rules’ space that lets them chatter, wander and experience the magic of the stage without all the shushing you’d get other places. It’s the nation’s first theater for babies. Just remember, it’s shoe-free, so toss some socks in your bag before setting off.

HEY BABY

ASK AN EXPERT:

When can I add cereal to formula to help baby sleep?

A

question many parents ask simply because they are tired! The truth is, unfortunately, adding food to the bottle WILL NOT make your baby sleep through the night.

I am concerned about this practice for a few reasons:

Cereal is not meant to go through the bottle, ttle, le, so many times, it ends up clogging the nipple, causing g your baby to be very frustrated when en n feeding. Babies have an immature digess-tive system, and prior io or to about 6 months,, their little systems aren’t meant to tolerate erate anything other than n easily digested breastmilk astmi tmilk lk or formula. Rushing g itt isn’ iisn’t sn’tt a good practice.

months can decrease the risk of food allergies in children, though the evidence is not 100 percent supported. Bottom line: Babies will sleep through the night when they are ready. Patience is important when it comes to feeding our kids. Pressure to eat, or offering food when they aren’t ready for it, is a recipe for disaster.

Allergies/Celiac Disease. As many parents know, food allergies aare increasing and parents typ typically ic will do ANYTHING prevent to preve n it from happening. IS THIS NORMAL?

Oh my, what big ears!

15

percent of babies have ear deformities that don’t resolve in the first few days. The top of the ear, called the helical rim, may flop over or have unusual shape. Ear molding devices such as EarWell may help in the first six weeks while cartilage is soft. Talk to your pediatrician to see if treatment by a specialist is warranted. If it is, consider a plastic surgeon at Shriners Hospitals, where care is provided regardless of a family’s ability to pay. Marisa Foss, CNP Shriners Hospitals for Children, Chicago

That cute belly button A belly button that sticks out like a knob is likely an umbilical hernia. This happens when the abdominal contents pushes against a small defect in the abdominal wall. This will close spontaneously and is not at all dangerous.

Dr. Susie Sheinkop Pediatrician PediaTrust

Acne already? Nearly half of newborns will develop Milia, tiny white bumps usually found on the nose. The bumps are nothing to be concerned about. They will gradually disappear in a few months. Similar bumps can appear on the roof of a baby’s

mouth or on the gum line. These are called Epstein’s pearls, harmless benign cysts that will go away.

Don’t be apologetic about the choices you make as a mother. Things aren’t always going to work out so, you must be patient and enjoy the changes. Cherish the time you have with your children; you will make memories that last a lifetime. Joan

WE ARE PARENTS’ FIRST PARTNERS IN THEIR CHILD’S LEARNING. At Kohl Children’s Museum, we understand that all parents want their children to grow into the best they can be. It’s the “how to grow” part that gets a little complicated. Visit our FREE Baby & Me program every Monday from 9:30 – 11 a.m. to network with other parents of babies 12 months or younger, ask questions and get advice from an Advocate Lutheran General Hospital nurse, and discover for yourself the power of learning through play.
