True connections for today’s moms Welcome to Hey Baby, the second edition of Chicago’s best guide to the great and joyous, overwhelming and sometimes befuddling, journey of becoming a mom. The response to our first issue was great. Moms told us they found what we wrote DAN HALEY practical and fun, but more than anything connecting. That resonated with me. You see, about 25 years ago—and both Chicago Parent and myself have a few years on our great partner Lindsay and her Bump Club and Beyond—we had the honor of inviting Dr. T. Berry Brazelton to Chicago. He was certainly that generation’s best known and loved parenting expert. Kind, smart, assuring and down-to-earth, he told me in that pre-social media moment that what new moms needed most were connections. It was that plain, he said. There weren’t simple, perfect answers to each question or worry a mom had. But so long as they had a network of support, it would all be fine. Thanks for making Chicago Parent, Bump Club and Beyond and our Hey Baby a piece of your network.

This year marks the fifth birthday of Bump Club and Beyond (and my oldest daughter!). It’s hard to believe that both of my first babies are no longer just that. Word through the Fisher-Price phone is that they offer monthly stroller tours, and I think we both know how much we love stroller tours. OK, let’s see that “Grande Jatte” business, but save buckets of time for the Thorne Miniature Rooms. I promise I won’t attempt to eat any tiny couches this time. I promise! Unless they magically become scheduling mavens (and I know for a fact that Mom missed two Moms n’ Tots swim classes last month alone), you won’t get me out to a cool parade this fall. That’s OK. Cart me back home in time for your favorite parade route of the day, the one toward my crib. (And don’t think I can’t hear you singing “Twist and Shout” once the door closes.)

WHEN IT GETS REAL UP IN THERE Tips to survive the oh-so-many OB exams
W
hile you’re busy thinking about the nursery you’ve been planning on Pinterest and the daring tiny tees you spotted at Psychobaby, you’ll also be getting to know your OB/GYN really well. Here’s how to get through those monthly appointments with as little stress as possible.
The waiting room: Pregnant bellies abound. Don’t compare because you’ll stress yourself out. Plus, bring your own reading material since the People that’s there features Brad and Jen still together. First appointment: Get ready to know the health history for your entire family twice removed. Doctors want to make sure all of your bases are covered. Arrive prepared and informed. First ultrasound: If your first ultrasound occurs during the early weeks of your pregnancy, do not expect the cool gel and belly rubbing. The first ultrasound usually involves a wand and a condom. Enough said. Monthly appointments: Stand with your back to the scale when you weigh-in. Trust us on this. The number will rise in the coming months and it’s best not to stress yourself out with the added pressure of maintaining your girlish figure. Also, monthly urine samples are a thing. Get your body back Many moms are nervous about getting back their pre-pregnancy bodies. One of the great added benefits of nursing is it burns calories, but you still need to make sure you get enough. A nursing mom needs an extra 330 calories per day. Too many moms are stressed over body image, and that isn’t healthy for you or your baby. Take it one day at a time. It took your body nine months to grow a baby; it will take a little while for things to go back. Spoil yourself a little. If you want chocolate, eat chocolate! Dr. Kimi Suh Loyola University Health System, 30 Second Mom contributor Labor & delivery: Likely the best and worst day of your life. Be prepared for everyone and their mother to share their own labor war story, with plenty of (often wrong) advice. Listen to yourself and you’ll be just fine. Follow-up: Baby has arrived and the hoo-hah looking is done, right? Not. Your six-week check-up will involve more prodding, but at least the hard part is done. What’s in a name?

ip and trendy Chicago moms are picking some really cool names for their babes ahead of baby name trends, making Logan, Aiden, Matthew and Anthony top 10 contenders for little guys and Ava, Ariana, Camila and Alexa most popular for their girlies.
That’s the conclusion of the nation’s No. 1 baby name guru, Bruce Lansky, when we convinced him to give us the lowdown on how the Windy City stacks up against national baby name trends. Lansky just released his new book 100,000+ Baby Names, a must-read for new parents searching for a perfect name. This year’s edition includes new names, naming trends and predictions on hot names. If you want to pick a cool name, Lansky says to choose a place or steal the last names of celebs, as in Aniston or Beckham, or a favorite character in a book or movie. “To me, nirvana is when the parents pick a name that is positive for the child in his or her lifetime and parents enjoy using,” Lansky says.

HEY BABY it’s not because I have some kind of moral stance on it, it’s literally what has worked for me so far. I’m totally willing to change it if it works out better some other way. I’m really easygoing as a mom; I don’t stress out too much. ...It’s such a short stage in your life, just do what feels right for you and don’t listen to what anyone else says. What are your tricks for handling such a busy schedule? Luckily, my actual job is invigorating, rewarding, energizing and refreshing. If I’m ever in doubt of “What the heck am I doing?” it reminds me why. Because these kids love it, the moms love it. I know what it means to a mom to have a break and to be having fun with their kid. ...Also I started recently putting in date nights with my husband. You have to do that. As hard as it is to carve out the

time and to pay for childcare to do it because it’s a pain, you have to spend time together. I’m not even talking about sex necessarily, but that time you spend talking and being with your husband is so valuable for how it rejuvenates you. You guys are on the same team. ...I don’t have very many other tricks. I like coffee too much; I try not to like wine too much. Try to treat yourself … but sometimes treating yourself is being in the car alone.

Why is music so important for kids? Music is vital to a child’s development. ...It’s very, very powerful because of its ability to compel people. There are not that many things in this world that can do that. ...And you can teach kids stuff. When it rhymes, it’s the law. do and to look at what is important to me and to focus on that. ...I think if I had not had the baby, I would still be going at 60 miles an hour. ...I don’t want to just be the kind of mom that’s there and is present in my daughter’s life. I want to be the kind of person that’s really engaged with what is happening with her and helping her to develop in a much more passionate and lively way. And I think that takes energy and thought and it takes a lot of learning on my end. What is your favorite thing to do with your daughter? My favorite thing would be to dance in the restaurant. She loves music and every time she hears music, she starts to move up and down. ...In the afternoon, I usually blare [music] between the lunch and the dinner service. ...Dancing with Paloma in this open space and just seeing her so full of joy
with the wind blowing in her hair as I’m twirling her around in my arms, it’s one of my favorite things. As a restauranteur, any advice for moms and dads for dining out with baby? Get out with your child and have nice dinners when the baby is really young. I think after the baby reaches the point where they can only be in their chair for so long, it sort of limits the places that you can go. ...There are certain ages where it becomes rather difficult to have a child in a restaurant, simply because they do not have the attention span to sit there for two hours. So do it before that time happens. I would say probably before six months. ...A lot of restaurants are very understanding, especially if you go in the earlier side of the evening. HEY BABY Why is it so important that 10 percent of your proceeds support charities? I think it was instilled in me growing up. We’re Christians, and we just really believe we have been given so much and we should be giving back to those who don’t have as much. We really thrive and take joy in helping other people. ...And we want our kids to be raised with that, too. I feel like in today’s culture it’s all about ourselves. It’s comparing ourselves to people on Facebook and Instagram and keeping up with the Joneses. And I just feel like there’s such beauty in not looking at yourself and just [thinking] “What can I do to help others?” Did you go crazy decorating your boys’ rooms? Noooo. I wish I could say yes and that they’re perfect, but
they’re so not. I started this company when I painted my son’s changing table, and it just became so fun. We would paint them and sell them and somehow it turned into this. ...But the poor second child, his room has not been decorated at all. ... It’s kind of like a chef who cooks a lot all day for people and then they get home and never cook for their family. What makes a good changing table? One where you can open all the drawers with one hand. That’s key for me, and that the height suits the height of the parent. Also that it will transition into toddlerhood. I don’t believe in spending money on a piece that will only suit you for a couple years. The big wide drawers just don’t work because you have to use both hands and by the time they’re five months, they’re rolling. I have little wiggleworms.
How would you describe yourself as a mom? I would say that I am a parent who loves to have fun within reason. I try not to take myself too seriously. And my goal is to not raise the smartest kids in the entire world but to raise kids who are hard-working and well-adjusted and who love others. When I take myself too seriously, my kids act up and they’re just more easily angered or frustrated because I’m more easily angered or frustrated trying to be who I’m not. So I just try to listen to my own instincts. Usually when I do that, rather than [listening to] all the books or blogs I’m reading, that’s when things run the best in my house. There’s no book that fits your kids perfectly. You have to just kind of try your best and know that they’ll probably need counseling too when they’re older.

hat beautiful pregnancy glow everybody talks about? That’s really people just being polite. In reality, you’re likely swollen from your ankles to your face, and as you tick closer to 40 weeks, the ability to actually be comfortable is

First few weeks

aby is now sleeping longer stretches, getting onto a nap schedule and making those adorable cooing and laughing sounds. Your baby is quite insistently attempting to tell you something of great importance, but is she “all done” or does she want “All-Bran cereal”? Their special lovey or the greatest hits of The Lovin’ Spoonful? You’re not alone in the hair-pulling angst of early communication breakdowns. Luckily, those seemingly indecipherable babbles have an easy cheat sheet, complete with helpful context clues and alternate possibilities:
The sound: Baa What it means: Bottle, bye bye, banana, bubble, binky, beans, bear, Boppy Unless it means: Banh mi or
“bring me somewhere else.” Context clues: Are you at a Vietnamese restaurant? Does baby enjoy Vietnamese food? If it’s neither of those two, odds are good it’s one of the first seven listed words.

What kinds of questions do you hear from Chicago parrents when they are choosing products for their babies? Jamie Grayson: I LOVE CHICAGO. Love it. I find the parents here very similar to parents in NYC, but a bit moree laid-back. Cars are used more often here than in NYC, so car-friendly strollers are important, as are car seats. CP: What are your picks for the following major, first-time parent purchases? JG: 1. Stroller: Check out Baby Jogger, Jané, UPPAbaby, Orbit Baby, Bumbleride. There are tons of strollers out there. The tricky thing is really taking your lifestyle into consideration when purchasing.
2. Car seat: Look at the Cybex Aton Q, Peg-Pérego Primo Viaggio 4-35, Nuna, Chicco KeyFit 30. All are terrific and have great installation features. 3. CP: Recommendation for an item that new parents report they can’t live without? JG: Swaddle blankets. You can never have enough! CP: What is your favorite gift to give new parents? JG: Swaddle blankets, skin care, a bath tub, NoseFrida and books. Start the joy of reading early! CP: Advice for city dwellers for whom space is a big consideration? Nursery rock stars Mickey’s special place My husband, Mike, and I were excited by the idea of seeing the world through our child’s eyes. And that’s what Where the Sidewalk Ends is all about. As we started designing the nursery, we knew we wanted the poem to be a theme. Local artist Shawn Stucky worked with us to customize the book cover mural, making the city skyline resemble Chicago’s and the dog to look like our dog, Penny. Every day, Mickey, who turned 1 in September, notices something new about the mural. Another special part of the room is the rug. My friend was in the process of creating a line of children’s rugs for a company she and her husband own. for your floor. It is incredibly soft—the perfect place to cuddle and read books. Little things in his room have big meaning for us, too. The little bunnies in the basket are my husband’s childhood toys, made by his mother. GOAT was our “name” for Mickey while I was pregnant. The artwork is a combination of pieces from artists that we picked up at festivals, flea markets and Etsy. The largest print is lyrics from a song that my husband sang to my belly in the mornings while I was pregnant. While pregnant, I couldn’t get enough ice cream, hence the ice cream print (with the words “sweeter than Ben and Jerry’s”). Riley’s sweet room My style is a mix of elegance and romance, yet still simple. Something classic that she could easily grow into. I love the soft pink and gold color palette. The wall color is “sweetheart,” which is so appropriate for our little princess. My favorite items in the room are the gallery wall—I spent hours on Etsy finding just the right ones!—the chandelier and the tassel garland. Sleep training
Before long, you’ll have a toddler on your hands. If they have trouble going to bed or staying in bed, try these tips:
✻ Put them in bed between 7-8 p.m.
✻ Take them shopping to pick out something special to sleep with. Also get a clock that says when it is time for bed and lights up when they can get up. ✻ During the day of the first night in a “big” kid bed, talk about being a big boy/girl and how they can sleep by themselves. Experienced moms’ advice on the return to work In between pumping sessions, put your pump parts in a Ziploc bag and put in the refrigerator until it is time to use again. That way you don’t have to wash each time.
It helps if you can see, smell and hear your baby. Yesterday’s hat and video on your phone go far. Don’t fret too much, your first day back will suck and that is OK. The second one will, too. Don’t let the guilt get you. When they tell you to relax, they are not kidding. Take a deep breath, stare at your lovely baby and know that you are doing the best you can.
Pump Monday into bottles for Tuesday, drop off when picking up baby on Monday evening. Tuesday for Wednesday and so forth. Freeze Friday milk flat. Take oldest frozen milk on Monday.

ver wonder why one week your baby seems as content as can be, and then all of a sudden, all hell breaks loose?
That’s why word of mouth is leading many Chicago moms to The Wonder Weeks, a book and related app that explains the developmental changes and regression periods all babies go through the first 20 months of their lives. For 35 years, authors Hetty van de Rijt and Frans Plooii researched baby development and out of it established 10 predictable weeks where
