Be grateful for green
Summer survival
with my favorite things
In the hot summer, the shade of trees is like a cool green hug. But why are most trees green? Trees’ leaves are green because the pigment that gives them their color also helps them do their work. Each leaf is a busy factory that makes food for the tree. The recipe for tree food includes carbon dioxide, a gas that the leaves take in from the air; water that plants pull up from the soil through their roots; and sunshine. Sunshine is the reason most leaves are wide and flat: so they can spread out and collect as much of the sun’s energy as possible. The other important ingredient is a chemical called chlorophyll, which has a green color. All plants have chlorophyll. That’s why trees, like grass, cornfields, and lettuce, are green. The green chlorophyll in their leaves and stems helps plants make nearly all the food on earth. Almost every other form of life, from bacteria so small you can’t even see them to cows and chickens and us, eats plants, or eats animals that ate plants. Nothing we eat, including smoothies and French fries and chicken fingers, would exist without the food that plants make from sunlight with the help of green chlorophyll. So now, when you look up into the green umbrella of a tree, you will know that leaves do more than keep you cool. Through plants’ magic trick of turning sunshine, air, and water into food, green leaves feed you too.

TAMARA L. O’SHAUGHNESSY
We decided the best thing we could do for you this month is help you create great memories, while not losing your mind when the kids complain ad nauseam that there’s nothing to do. So I reached out to a few of my favorite places to give lucky readers— hopefully you!—a chance to make those memories for free.
Hit street festivals in style with my favorite new wagon from Chicago-based Radio Flyer, the Ultimate EZ Fold Wagon, valued at $199. Celebrate the freedom to soar at iFLY Indoor Skydiving, Rosemont and Naperville, with a family pack of 10 flights or five double flights, valued at $302. The League of Littles should be on every family’s fave list. Members have outdone themselves with a giant prize: Bubbles Academy is providing a free sevenweek session to any of its Music & Movement classes (valued at $259); Goldfish Swim School in Chicago and Evanston is providing two months of free lessons plus registration; Lil’ Kickers Chicago is providing a free session of classes or a basic soccer birthday party (valued at $250); and Little Beans Chicago and Evanston is providing a 10-visit Pass (valued at $100). Adler Planetarium is always a sure-hit with kids, especially this summer with its Summer of Science offerings. Win one of two packs of tickets for the family, valued at $280. Get the kids cooking with The Chopping Block. Win a fun four-day Kids Summer Cooking Camp where kids learn how to follow recipes, work cleanly and safely in the kitchen and explore new foods, valued at $175. American Girl has exciting things happening with its
contemporary dolls. Win a Truly Me doll of your choice (40 options available), plus create a one-of-akind doll outfit at the new Truly Me Signature Studio experience at American Girl Chicago, valued at $147. I can’t wait for Wild Encounters at Brookfield Zoo, which is providing one family with five general admission tickets, five tickets to Wild Encounters and free parking (valued at $100). See the city from a different perspective with a family pack of five tickets for a Shoreline Sightseeing Classic Lake Cruise (valued at $50) or the Architecture River Tour (valued at $100). Legoland Discovery Center Chicago is adding a new thrill, Pirate Adventure Island, and it wants you to see it by offering day passes for a family of five, valued at $67. And speaking of Legos, see them in supersize at Morton Arboretum’s new exhibit, Nature Connects: Art with Lego Bricks, which opens July 17. Morton is providing a family five-pack of tickets, valued at $55. Contest details on Page 13. I’ll cross my fingers that you win one of my favorite things. Taking me along is optional. Happy July.

nyone who has missed the up-close-andpersonal experience of the old Children’s Zoo at Brookfield Zoo will be able to get the old mojo back—and then some— when the 3-acre Hamill Family Wild Encounters exhibit opens July 1. Think of Wild Encounters as the Children’s Zoo on steroids, featuring opportunities to interact with
exotic animals from all over the world. The $17.5 million exhibit has been in the works since the Children’s Zoo, a family favorite for 60 years, was shuttered in 2013. It features six animal exhibit areas, including a 6,500-squarefoot aviary where visitors can walk among some of the zoo’s collection of 700 parakeets. The Christopher Family Plaza serves as an entryway to main animal exhibits, but also gives visitors a place to interact with the zoo ambassadors such as a porcupine, savannah and serval cats, a screaming armadillo, a tamandua (anteater), amphibians and snakes. One new encounter area allows

visitors to feed, groom and walk among 25 to 30 climbing, leaping and jumping Nigerian dwarf goats. Nearby will be alpacas, llamas and a herd of reindeer. In another area, visitors will see the adorable red pandas. The Australian outback will be represented by a yard housing more than 20 Bennett’s wallabies and emus, which visitors can also feed. The aviary is one of the largest in North America, according to Brookfield Zoo, and will provide one of the more remarkable interactions for visitors—buy seed sticks to lure the birds to alight on your shoulder or finger. B
efore handheld technology ran our lives and Pac-Man could be played on a 5-inch screen, arcades were a place for social delight and air-conditioned, summertime bliss. Arcades will hold that special place once again in Chicago thanks to the new For the Win arcade. Except this time, with countless HD screens, a dim sum-style cart service and prizes like selfie sticks and vintage board games up for grabs, FTW has launched this nostalgic experience into the future. If you could dream up a 10-yearold video game-tech nerd’s version of heaven, it’d be somewhere in between the amazing SEGA Showdown and Star Wars games at FTW. The latest brainchild of Lucky Strike
Entertainment hosts more than 130 cuttingedge games, a Chicago-themed mini golf course, gastropub food, craft libations and a giant video wall for sporting events. “A place where kids can be out socially playing and imagining in a positive environment is an important part of growing up,” CEO Steven Foster says. “We’ve created a space for people of all ages to play where friendliness and magic are the cornerstones.” FTW’s steampunk atmosphere is an explosion of carnivalesque whimsy, with flashy displays and colorful lights at every turn. Walk in, buy a pre-loaded game card—which means no more thousands of tokens to keep track of—and let the kids run crazy for a few hours. Once they’re done playing a supreme mixture
of classically retro and chicly modern games, use the game card to redeem prizes from a choice of more than 250 toys, games and candies. We also wouldn’t blame you for making this your new date night spot as well. The arcade is 21 and over after 8 p.m., so you can leave the kids at home and have a classic date night of competitive fun. Emily Adams

Grow an avocado tree from just a pit
Kids may try a new food if they get handson with it. A fun project is to grow an avocado tree! Remove and wash the pit, then push three toothpicks into the thickest part. Suspend it over a glass of water so that the base is covered with water and place in a bright location. In about three to six weeks, the pit will sprout. When the stem is at least 5 inches tall, pinch off the top leaves and wait for more. Plant it in potting soil when it’s about 8 inches tall. You’ll still have to buy avocados for a few more years, but kids will love watching their tree grow! Donna John, 30 Second Mom contributor

GOOD SENSE EATING
FOOD SAFETY
at farmers markets Shopping at a farmers market not only offers some of the freshest fruits, veggies and other foods, but it also offers the opportunity to buy locally, support small business and connect with your community. But as you explore farmers markets in your area, pay attention to the vendors’ food safety. Vendors often sell products outdoors where they are exposed to dirt, bugs and CHRISTINE pollutants. In addition, they usually have PALUMBO little access to water for product washing. Most markets have their own food safety rules as well as related government regulations. But there are basic guidelines you should follow, too: Check the stands’ overall cleanliness, including gloves and clean utensils, covered garbage cans, coolers for perishables and clean bags. Be sure to use separate reusable grocery totes for raw meat and poultry and readyto-eat foods. It’s important to wash your reusable totes often. Unwashed grocery bags are breeding grounds for bacteria. Harmful foodborne pathogens like E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria and norovirus may contaminate fruits and vegetables. To reduce your risk: Go early for the best selections, wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly and dry them with a clean cloth
or paper towel. Avoid produce with mold, bruises or cuts. Wash produce even if you plan to peel it. Bacteria on the outside of melons and bananas can be transferred inside when you cut or peel them. Refrigerate cut or peeled fruits and vegetables within two hours. Only buy pasteurized milk products. Pregnant women, young children and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for illness caused by Listeria. Soft cheeses made from unpasteurized milk are one common source. Eggs should be properly chilled at 45°F. Make sure eggs are clean and the shells are not cracked. Meat should be kept in closed coolers with ice. Perishables must be refrigerated within two hours (one hour if it’s over 90°F), so bring an insulated bag for the way home. Separate meat from other ready-to-eat foods, so the juices from raw meat do not come in contact with other foods. Only buy juice or cider that has been pasteurized.

WELL PLAYED
A sumptuous summer list Summer in Chicago is like a delightful prize at the bottom of a giant box of cereal. We’ve had to dig deep, practice patience, and when it finally surfaces, hold on for dear life. Here are four of my new favorite things that will help make these mid-summer days we’ve finally found totally worth the wait. MEREDITH SINCLAIR

Play with your style
I never thought I’d say this, but there’s a new fanny pack in town and she’s AWESOME. If you miss the ease of having all your essential stuff at your waistband, then you are going to flip for the new “Gabby” bag by 84Rockwell. Designed and manufactured in Chicago by designer Bridget McDermott, this fun and fringy new concept on the “hip bag” allows onthe-go girls the joy of the hands-free handbag while maintaining all her fashion cred. It’s the only bag you’ll need this summer. It comes in eight beautiful colors in suede and leather. $280, at local shops, including Juniper Boutique, Runway, Enaz and VMR, and online at 84Rockwell.com.

Play with your pals
Now that it’s seriously sunny in our fair city, it’s time to throw as many summer soirees as the calendar will allow. But if planning a party gives you the shakes, take a deep breathe and grab your phone. There’s an app for that. The new Partyology (partyology.com) helps you fully plan your next party from the palm of your hand. This free iPhone app brings inspiration and shopping into a single space to make party planning peaceful. Now go put on your party dress.

Play with your family
The sweetest spot in the world has finally come to Chicago! Dylan’s Candy Bar opened in May and has kids and their grownups satisfying their sweet teeth in style. Dylan Lauren, daughter of Ralph Lauren, has creatively combined fashion, fun and more candy than you’ve ever seen to create a wonderland of confectionery goodness. Located right on Michigan Avenue, it’s a super fun stop during a day in the city or after dinner downtown. Dylan’s Candy Bar is also a delicious place to host your next birthday party, baby shower or over-21 soiree. Dylan’s Candy Bar, 445 N. Play with your mate
I am always on the lookout for creative and fun ways to date my mate. So when I got a glimpse of the beautiful new rooftop terrace space, Streeterville Social, at the Loews Chicago Hotel, I got a little giddy. Besides being the city’s largest outdoor rooftop terrace, Streeterville Social hosts two bars and a grassy lawn area perfect for a game of pétanque (bocce’s French cousin) or playing with the custom giant Jenga set. The comfy lounge-style seating makes it a great go-to for daytime lunch dates or an evening of a little eat, play, love. Tip: Get a spot on the lawn early for a prime view of the fireworks all summer at Navy Pier! ChicagoParent.com July 2015 23

FAILING WITH GUSTO
The Ghost of Mommy Past
Then it came time to have kids. Three babies in three years. When my youngest took to screaming for a year straight, I gave up on the notion of perfection. Nobody was getting pureed food. Diapers were not changed the moment there was visual sagging. Caillou played on a continuous loop. I also discovered wine. From there, things snowballed. When we added a deck, I wanted the no-maintenance plastic one. I bought rubber mulch. I invested in a Grip ‘N Grab to pick up the endless deposits of shoes, Legos and scraps of paper left on the floor. Bending over was for saps. Catching myself in the mirror, I realized I looked like an inmate assigned to roadside clean-up detail. And I didn’t care. I marvel at all the
parents who continue to perform their duties to the fullest extent of their abilities. There is homemade macaroni and cheese and clothes hemmed by hand. I have one friend who just took in a stray dog her husband brought home from the police station. Another mom I know bakes every day. I make Mac & Cheese from the box, have kids with pants that do not fit and buy Twinkies. The old me would be mortified. How could I ever secure my good parenting papers without planting some shrubs, attending a Mommy & Me overnight camping trip or designing a family logo? If I was relaxed, happy and not doing something every minute of the day, wasn’t I just like one of those “loafers” I once refused to befriend? As it turns out, those loafers are a lot of fun.
They somehow still manage to get their work done and enjoy life now and then. They value a light moment and laughing with friends. They understand loss and hardship like few do. Most of my current pals are “loafers.” I even married one. The overachieving version of myself disappeared a long time ago, sacrificed in the name of personal
limitations and sanity. Occasionally, I do miss her—particularly when I have fallen behind on laundry. But should I ever spot her again, cast aside in a pile of good intentions and lost field trip notices? I will be sure to fetch my Grip ‘N Grab. Marianne Walsh is a Chicago mom of three boys. Talk back
Somewhere along the unpredictable path of parenthood, I lost somebody important. As a classic overachiever, I once avoided any distractions that could derail my skewed sense of success. Subscribing to the theory that sacrifice and hard work were the keys to happiness, I graduated college with honors in three years. I landed the corporate job. I MARIANNE WALSH purchased my first condo at 23. I did not drink, stay up late or hang out with people without a definitive life plan.

VOICE: ERIN RUGGABER HOWARD
The pursuit of grubbiness Let nature reign supreme, at least for today
“M
y teacher says you have to cut my fingernails because they’re dirty,” my son Danny reported. “She says if I can’t keep my nails clean, we need to trim them really short.” I looked down at Danny’s strong, blunt fingers, which still possessed a little baby chubbiness. Sure enough, there were gray rings under each nail. The tenacious grime had escaped my notice, probably because I was so used to it. At first, I was embarrassed by the teacher’s comment. Apparently, I couldn’t manage to keep my 6-yearold decently clean. Then I started to feel a faint sense of pride. Those dirty hands weren’t something to be ashamed of. They were a badge of honor. Danny is a media hog. If I let him, he’d spend all day sitting in a near-hypnotic state, bathed in the unhealthy blue light of the TV, moving only his thumbs as he battled whatever Big Boss crossed the screen. And yet,
when I manage to prod him into action by cutting off access to the mesmerizing glow, he magically turns into a sturdy outdoorsman—a fairy tale woodsman released from an enchanted sleep. Danny’s discolored fingernails mean sunlight, fresh vegetables, garden hoses and digging holes just to see what you might find. They mean rescuing water-logged worms from the driveway and poking around for roly-poly bugs under a rock. They mean braving miniscule thorns to pluck the juiciest, ripest, reddest raspberry off the bush. Those dirty fingernails mean that Danny is a healthy, happy kid doing
what healthy, happy kids are supposed to do—soaking up sunshine, water and mud like a blooming sunflower. “Kids and clothes both wash,” my mom used to say when faced with her four grimy children. She was only half right— my own four children have ruined their fair share of clothes by sliding down sand dunes and launching mud bombs. But even if the clothes don’t survive, the kids thrive. It’s hard to smile when I’m staring down a pile of muddy shoes, an overflowing laundry basket, a thick ring in the bathtub, but I try to see beyond the mess. I’m sure Danny’s teacher looked at his grubby hands
Those dirty fingernails mean that Danny is a healthy, happy kid doing what healthy, happy kids are supposed to do. and saw only dirt, germs and the potential for 23 sick first-graders. But dirty fingernails really mean that in the epic battle of nature vs. technology, nature reigned supreme, at least for today. Erin Ruggaber Howard is an Aurora mom.

Picture-perfect parenting One mom wonders what we’re teaching our kids
M
y 4-year-old is dressed head-to-toe in a glittery princess dress and her best plastic high heels, a jewelencrusted crown resting on her blonde hair that would make Lady Gaga proud, her arms outstretched to the sides like Elsa ‘letting it go’ in her ice castle. I start taking pictures with my iPhone, the former television producer in me staging the scene, removing from the background the pile of dresses my daughter didn’t want to wear, the halffinished cup of milk, the abandoned art project. I want the photo to be perfect. Finally we settle on a picture (my daughter asked to see the shots as well), and I post it on Instagram and Facebook. The responses start flooding in: There are the “how cutes” and the “OMGs” as well as the quips from my friends wishing they, too, could get away with sporting tiaras and tutus on a daily basis. And to be honest, I crave the likes and the positive comments about my girlygirl. It feels good. Darn good. Maybe too good? Is my preschooler always a perfectly posed little princess? Of course not— she’s 4 going on 14 with a lot of her

mommy’s type-A tendencies sprinkled in (sorry, honey!). But does anyone really want to hear about the tantrum she threw during her princessplay-turned-photo-shoot? Do my friends really want the details of the standoff we had over me wanting her to “smile normally” instead of sticking out her tongue or purposely closing her eyes? Do people want me to tell them about the “Moooom!” that rolled off her tongue when I asked her to give me just one more smile? I think not. And more importantly, do I really want to reveal that the struggle between us happened because of me—because I wanted the shot? There’s a fine line between wanting your child to put her best self and her real self out there. Lately, I’m starting to realize I could be teaching her to want that perfectly posed picture, too. My daughter will never know a world without smartphones or social media, a world where one’s daily existence can’t be endlessly edited and filtered. So it’s
my job to show her (and to remember for myself) that there will always be a world to enjoy while she lives in the moment. Next time I stumble upon her playing dress up, I’m vowing to join in her imaginary universe—and maybe sneak a candid shot, instead.

Being “cool” and being a dad, while not mutually exclusive states, are generally at existential loggerheads. Fatherhood brings authoritarianism, decay, love of puns and other qualities not generally considered gnarly (or whatever the kids say these days). When the weather heats up, it becomes more difficult for me to mask from my daughter Viva my precipitous
slide “out of touch.” Summer means removing that hipster cap that hides your balding pate, it means T-shirts revealing the collapse of your once-beefy pecs into something more feminine and it means SHORTS, which reveal how many, many times you skipped “leg day” at the gym and make it seem like your pants just ... stopped. Summer means you’ll be pulled out of your comfort zone. In the colder months, if you’re an opera fan, you can turn to your seat partner at Lyric and rave about the chorus in “Nabucco.” If you’re a stamp collector, you can wax philatelistic to an office mate about controversial stamp podcasts. Not traditionally “cool”—but at least you’re in control. In the summer, you’ll likely attend multiple picnics where you’re coerced into removing your shirt to swim, conscripted into playing volleyball, or put on the spot to light a fire or pitch a tent. Don’t know how? Not “cool.” If you’re going to keep from embarrassing yourself, you’ll have to invest some time into understanding summer stuff.

Maybe do a few lunges and calf raises before fall hits, and maybe lose the short sleeve dress shirts in favor of something less Det. Sipowicz. (Viva doesn’t know who that is, but she knows the shirts aren’t cool.) It’s hard work to keep cool in the summer, but isn’t it worth a little work to slow the slide into the autumn of your relevance? Grant Park Music Festival Campout at Lincoln Park Zoo
Date night, family style Skip the sitter and bring the whole gang for nighttime adventure
L
BY MEGAN MURRAY ELSENER ong summer days are the perfect invitation for night time outings. While date nights usually are meant for just mom and dad, consider these alternatives for family fun this summer:
Campout at Lincoln Park Zoo Sleep under the stars along with the sea lions, sheep and swans. Lincoln Park Zoo offers four campout evenings (July ca 11, July 25, Aug. 8 and 11 Aug. 14) where families Au can pitch a tent and set ca up a campsite within the zoo grounds. The th
campout is intended for families with children 5-12. A zoo educator leads visits to the zoo animals and activity stations, and ends the evening with a campfire and s’mores. The morning wake-up call from the flamingos, gibbons and lions will be like nothing your family has experienced before. lpzoo.org
Picnic at Millennium Park Break out that picnic basket and blanket and head down to Millennium Park. Along with the stunning skyline view and taking photos at “the Bean,” it’s the perfect place to soak up all that is great about Chicago in the summer. For music lovers, pick from either the summer music series on Monday and Thursday evenings or classical concerts through the Grant Park Music Festival June-August. If movies are your family’s thing, take a
trip on a Tuesday night for the summer film series on the state-of-the-art 40-foot LED screen. Whether you go for the indie rock, jazz or your favorite movie, it will be an evening your family will remember. millenniumpark.org grantparkmusicfestival. com

Want to flirt with the fifth flavor? The umami burger is a savory sensation. Truffled mushroom duxelle, sundried tomato confit, togarashi mayo, bacon and smoked Gouda make it rich, earthy and delicious. It sent Guy Fieri on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” into euphoria. Have adventurous eaters? Kimchi fries, piled high with caramelized kimchi, cheese sauce, bacon, scallions and sesame seeds, are a popular side. Visit on the weekends, when the Korean Philly cheese steak eggrolls are available. Little ones hesitant to try new things? Panko breaded chicken breasts are a fresh, crunchy spin on chicken strips. Firecakes is all about the doughnuts. That’s because there’s no space for anything else. The walk-in joint does not work if you want to relax, but in exchange you’ll get one of the most delicious doughnuts in town. It is known for its extra large vanilla glazed version, but I found the Meyer lemon filled doughnuts to have the best combination of sweet and sour. My mom friend counterpart thought the vanilla was the best of all. A place to sit would make Firecakes perfection for a family outing.

3329 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago Dinkel’s is the familymilyfriendliest of all the doughnuts shops we tried. Farther north than some of the popular shops downtown, Dinkel’s has been around since 1922. A Dinkel’s doughnut is everything you expect ct from one—sweet, small enough not to feel overwhelming, just enough to enjoy. y. Dinkel’s just added d a new café area to itss bakery, so there are plenty of tables to sit and savor the flavor. Plus, the prices are cheaper than the rest of the shops we tried. The options at Dinkel’s are what you expect, but in a good way. We tried the
chocolate fudge, maple walnut glazed, raspberry bismarck, cake doughnut and vanilla fudge. As we found out, sometimes there’s nothing quite as good as a simple doughnut.

Stan’s Donuts 1560 N. Damen Ave., Chicago go Stan’s is reminiscent of a ’50s diner. r. The neon sign and black and white tile interior evoke an older time when n maple bacon wasn’t even a “thing.” At Stan’s it is; you can get a maple caramel mel bacon bar to go or eat in. The shop has as stools for sitting and a couple tables for a longer stay. We tried an array off doughnuts—Stan’s even has a vegan option and a gluten-free option. Of the many choices available, we picked d a chocolate peanut butter pocket, raspberry bismarck, chocolate glazed sprinkle, vegan sugar & glazed and glazed doughnut. Overall, the kids thought Stan’s doughnuts were very “sweet.” The peanut butter pocket was extremely rich while the vegan doughnut was spectacular in its consistency and taste. One of our taste testers said the raspberry bismarck was “raspberry yum.” I think that’s a ringing endorsement.
The staff was lovely and the water to wash down h pitchers i h off free f hd our sweets were welcome. CONTINUED ON PAGE 50

Do-Rite Donuts 50 W. Randolph St., Chicago Do-Rite is a small batch doughnut oughnut shop— never making more than 36 doughnuts at a time. It is known for many things, but most of all, its Valrhona chocolate cake doughnuts and daily Michigan apple frititters. Since it shares a kitchen n with Petterino’s, Do-Rite also serves a variety of lightt chicken dishes. We tried a variety of Do-Rite’s offerings—the Valrhona, apple fritritter, old fashioned ned and glazed. The doughnuts were less sweet than Stan’s, but not as soft. The outdoor seating is great for families. Sara R. Fisher is a regular Chicago Parent columnist, business woman and mom of two.

Brain drain prevention Shh, kids will just think they’re having fun
T
BY MELISSA SILVERBERG he sun is high, temperatures are rising and summer is in full bloom. The last thing on the minds of you and your kids is school, right? Wrong. Studies show that students can forget a serious amount of skills and learning over the summer, forcing teachers to spend the first four to six weeks of the new school year catching up on what had already been taught. While most students don’t want to spend the few beautiful days of Chicago summer inside doing math drills and writing essays, parents can encourage plenty of fun ways to keep learning going all summer without it ever seeming like work.
Go back to basics at the beach A trip to the beach is about fun, relaxation and play—but it can also be a perfect time to brush up on some basic educational activities. Before you go, work on a list of animals, plants and other sights you might see near the water. As you discover seagulls, shells
and fish, cross them off the list and practice spelling their names. Turn a day of building in the sand into an engineering challenge. Encourage the kids to find a way to build the tallest, or more structurally sound, sand castle they can. Even practice art skills by drawing out the architectural schematics before they start building. Bring a few books in case the waters of Lake Michigan haven’t warmed up enough to swim.
Brown Bear, Brown Bear and more at the Zoo Spend a day enjoying the sights, sounds and smells at Brookfield or Lincoln Park Zoo, but also learning about biology. While it’s fun to look at the animals, it can also be an important science lesson for kids. Go through the scientific method before you head to the zoo. Make a list of questions your children have about the animals they’ll see. What do bears eat? How much does a tiger weigh? How tall are the giraffes? Do
some research online together and form a hypothesis about what you might learn. As you move through the zoo, test those hypotheses by observing the animals in their habitats, reading the signs and asking nearby employees. Talk about it as you go, finding out if your researched answers were correct or if you learned something new. When you get home, have each kid draw a picture and write a few sentences about their favorite part of the trip. Hang them on the fridge as a reminder of the fun experience and day spent as a zoologist.

Much to learn at Chicago’s museums When it’s too rainy or humid to spend time outside, summer activities can quickly resort to playing video games or watching television. Instead, head to one of Chicago’s many museums for some dry, air-conditioned learning fun. From interactive math and science experiments at the Museum of Science and Industry to astronomy at Adler Planetarium to history at Field Museum to oceanology at the Shedd Aquarium, a day at the museum is learning that never feels boring.
Learning one bite at a time Eating at home or at a restaurant is a fun family activity, but also an endless opportunity for learning. Baking a batch of cookies or cake for the family is something that’s full of math and measurements. Let the kids figure out how much of each ingredient is necessary, and then they get to do the fun part—eating the treats they helped create. When planning a family night out, try a restaurant with international cuisine, practice some key words before you go and challenge your kids to order their meal in another language. Before the bill comes, have them add up the total, without pulling out a phone or calculator, and see how accurate their figures are.
Scrapbook summer A summer of long days always goes too quickly, and before you blink, it will be time to send the kids back to school and pull out those winter coats again. To keep memories of all the fun summer activities, have each kid create a scrapbook along the way. Work on arts and crafts skills, drawing and painting pictures describing some of the summer’s top activities. Create prompts so they can log their favorite memories such as “The best part of this summer was…” or “This summer I learned…” to make sure their writing skills don’t get rusty. Scrapbooks are a fun project to learn and keep the crew busy on a rainy day and will create lasting memories of this summer for years to come.

The 606 New, elevated park and trail system has much to offer families
M
BY CAITLIN MURRAY GILES ore than a decade in the making, The 606 park and trail system is officially open, bringing together arts, history, design, trails for bikers, runners and walkers, event spaces, alternative transportation avenues and green open space. The centerpiece of this new park system is The Bloomingdale Trail, an elevated 2.7-mile, multi-use recreational space. This project is named for the three numbers that begin all Chicago zip codes, a nod to the hope that this park system will serve as a community connector. “The 606 will be a wonderful resource for families with small children. This new community space will bring many families together and provide a safe place for kids to stay active, whether on the trail or in the ground-level parks,” says Jamie R. Simone, program director of the Urban Parks Program at the Trust for Public Land in Chicago. “Imagine being able to learn to ride a bike for almost three miles without having to watch for vehicular traffic.” The 606 links four historic
Chicago communities (Wicker Park, Bucktown, Logan Square and Humboldt Park) and six city parks. It will be a resource to more than 80,000 residents (20,000 of whom are children) who are within 10 minutes’ walking distance from various access points throughout the park system. This innovative and muchanticipated project—part of Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s effort to create 800 new parks, recreation areas and green spaces over the next five years—repurposes abandoned railroad space along the once-bustling Bloomingdale Line. The Bloomingdale Trail takes its place in history alongside the highly touted High Line Park in New York City as one of few examples of elevated public parks repurposed from abandoned or unused former railroads. After following the planning
stages and watching construction on the trail since the August 2013 groundbreaking, local residents were eager for it to open. “It is going to be such a great place to go for family walks and bike rides and perhaps even a quiet place for me to go and read a book alone one
The 606 system encompasses several access parks: Walsh Park, Churchill Field, Park 567 at Milwaukee/ Leavitt and Julia de Burgos. It runs along Bloomingdale Avenue (1800 North) from Ashland Avenue (1600 West) on the east to Ridgeway Avenue (3750 West) on the west side.
day. I am looking forward to seeing our neighborhood from above—amazing homes, beautiful backyards, parks full of families and dogs,” says Sarah McNamara Zweidinger, a Wicker Park mom of two. Caitlin Murray Giles is a Wicker Park mother of three.

An explosion of patriotism
T
he Fourth of July is about more than fireworks (although we’re all suckers for that pyrotechnic pageantry). This year you can honor our nation’s independence in a fun and educational way at Chicago History Museum’s annual celebration. The outdoor party begins at 10 a.m. and includes patriotic music (start practicing those Sousa marches!), a reading of the Declaration of Independence, and a children’s parade led by what’s billed as “The World’s Tallest Uncle Sam.” After you’ve enjoyed the red, white and blue festivities, head inside the museum (it’s free that day!) for the grand re-opening of the Naphtali ben Yakov Pritzker American History Wing. The updated area of the museum includes
the state-of-the-art Robert R. McCormick Theater, which shows a brand new film that transports audiences through the t history of Chicago (you’ll practically feel the flames from the Fire from your seat!). Plus, the new Guild d Gallery invites visitors to learn the meaning of Chicago’s iconic flag and then use an interactive 12-foot wall to help select a fifth star, as inspired by our
city’s most important people, places and things. While you’re at the museum, be sure to take advantage of the free price tag and visit “Facing Freedom,” which delves into our nation’s long and complicathistory with the notion ed h off liberty, and “Chicago: Crossroads of America” Cr r which has an ‘El’ car to wh h and activity eexplore x ccarts for families. Your kids will thank you for stopping by yyo the “Sensing Chicago” exhibit, where they can ride a high-wheel bike, smell some odors from the city’s past and even turn themselves into a Chicago-style hot dog—just
hours before you’re flipping your own on the grill. The best part is, after all that patriotic learning, the fireworks will be just the cherry on top of your Independence Day. Elizabeth Diffin

Storytime standouts
S
ummer reading has a new look this year, thanks to fun storytimes that take the words right off the page and make them come to life. Here are five unlikely spots to hear your favorite tales—not a hushed library among them. In a hammock. An aerial yoga hammock, to be exact. Families with kids 6 and up can hang from branches of mighty oak trees and listen to stories that tell of the wisdom of the oaks. No yoga experience is necessary. Your biggest challenge just might be staying awake for The End. $43, $35 members. 1011:30 a.m. July 11. The Morton Arboretum, 4100 Illinois Route 53, Lisle. (630) 9680074, mortonarb.org. By the pool. Turtle Splash Water Park has tube slides, tot slides and corkscrew slides, not to mention waterfalls and a zero-depth entry. After you’re done splishing and splashing (or just need a break), hear stories from West Chicago Public Library for a little literary fun in the sun. $8, $6 kids 3-17,
free kids under 3. 2-3 p.m. July 16. 129 W. National St., West Chicago. (630) 231-1552, westchicago.lib.il.us. In the woods. Naturalists know a lot about the great outdoors, but some of them are also experts at telling stories. This open-air storytime includes games, crafts and a short hike for kids 3-6, so it’s ideal for little ones who haven’t quite mastered the art of sitting still. $8. 10-11 a.m. July 16 and 30. Heller Nature Center, 2821 Ridge Road, Highland Park. (847) 433-6901, pdhp.org. Among the ruins. Take a seat on a magic carpet (or maybe just a Persian rug) and get swept away with stories based on The Arabian Nights. After hearing the featured book, kids
5-8 can enjoy a fun activity, too. Keep an eye peeled for genies—or at least any suspicious oil lamps. Free. 3 p.m. Tuesdays; 10:30 a.m. Thursdays. Oriental Institute Museum, 1155 E. 58th St., Chicago. (773) 702-9514, oi.uchicago.edu. While you shop. Chicago’s favorite storyteller, The Storybook Mom, takes her act on the road, giving moms and dads the chance to browse while the kiddos hear books come alive. Stop by Little Beans (Tuesdays), Monica & Andy (Wednesdays) or Explore & Much More (second and fourth Fridays). Or—our favorite—enjoy some frozen yogurt at Froyo Chicago’s Southport location for an even sweeter storytime (fourth Thursdays). Free. thestorybookmom.com. Elizabeth Diffin

WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS
A Marvel-ous mission

his summer, the Avengers are the stars of the big screen— and probably at least a few kids’ (and, ahem, moms’) dreams. But now there’s the chance for us regular Joes to get a taste of the superhero life, thanks to The Marvel Experience, coming to McCormick Place this month. The domed attraction features the first-ever 360-degree, 3-D proworld’s first-e jection theate theater, as well as a 4-D thrill ride that can rival the fanciest amusebecome Agents of ment park’s. Visitors V S.H.I.E.L.D. in training, complete with an encoded ID bracelet, and get to fly Man, scale buildings with with Iron Man and smash with Hulk, then Spider-Man an heroes battle with super vilhelp the her lains like R Red Skull and HYDRA in a attempt to save the world. thrilling at launched in 2013 The experience exp and arrives in Chicago after runs in

But once your time in Marvel world is up, we have a feeling you’ll visit it in your memory over and over again. After all, it’s not every day you get to save the world with the hottest band of superheroes (Paging Captain America!) around. Elizabeth Diffin
