EDITOR’S NOTE SPONSORED
All awhirl Long before people built helicopters or drones to hover in the sky, nature built whirlybirds. Maple whirlybirds, that is. The fluttering things that twirl down from maple trees in summer are called samaras, and they are seeds with wings. If you drop a samara from above your head, the wing will make it twirl in a little circle all the way to the ground. How? The thin, wide, paper-like wing catches the air and rotates around the heavy tree seed. As the wing cuts through the air, its speed generates lift. Basically, it’s the way helicopters fly—and insects and hummingbirds. Why would a tree seed be built to whirl? Because it needs to leave home. A seed that drops fast straight down will land in the shade of its mother tree, where there’s no sunlight and little chance to grow. A seed that is fluttering in a circle will fall more slowly. While it’s in the air, a gust of wind may blow it out into the open, where there will be enough sun to sprout. A maple tree drops thousands of samaras each summer, and only a few ever sprout. Though many of the seeds will be eaten by squirrels and other animals, a wing gives each one a better chance. Nature is a great engineer.
Tummy time We can all tick off a long list of reasons why raising the kids in Chicago and its suburbs is absolutely the best. One of those reasons has to be the food, right? Give me a deep dish pepperoni or TAMARA L. an Italian beef and fries on a Saturday O’SHAUGHNESSY night and I’m a happy mom despite the food baby that results. I figure that’s why they make loose-fitting maxi skirts. Summer in Chicago means food fests at every turn, with the mother of all food fests, Taste of Chicago, taking the starring role. I’ll admit, doing Taste is always on my annual summer to-do list, but I never quite got around to going until last year. Last year, Chicago Parent created Kids Eat Chicago in partnership with Taste of Chicago and I found myself and the kids right in the heart of the city munching on lots of food that makes Chicago great. Instead of being overwhelmed by the crowds like I feared I would be, Kids Eat actually became a fun respite. My family, for instance, made Kids Eat our home base, ventured out into the crowds for the food, then quickly dashed back to Kids Eat to enjoy. Kids Eat Chicago returns to Grant Park this month. You’ll find just a taste of all the things Chicago Parent’s wonderful event planners have in store for your family starting on page 24. I hope to see you there. Happy July.

our landlubbers might not turn into seafaring experts in a day at the Chicago Children’s Museum’s new Boats exhibit, but they’ll certainly leave more comfortable climbing on a vessel.
The climbing is the key, as the museum has found boats of many sizes to explore from top to bottom, inside and out. Kids can helm a two-story fishing boat, with a galley and sleeping space in the bottom and a steering wheel at the captain’s station up a narrow staircase. They can luff the sails on a sailboat, or find comfort in the closeness of a kayak. They’ll learn how boats of all sizes move through the lake waters: by machine (the power boat), by man (the kayak) and by nature (the sailboat). Once they find their favorite cruiser, your new sailor can grab one of the many fishing poles to hook a worm, crawfish or perch and learn about

the fishlife that inhibit the Great Lakes. If your kiddo is more comfy on the ground, he or she can man the bait shop, taking charge of their math skills by selling worms and fishing licenses with the money provided. There’s a knot-tying station, where young sailors can learn about and replicate knots used on a boat, and two boxes of costumes for play as a captain, a mermaid or even a beaver. The exhibit is perfect for kids who are just learning to walk up to age 10. Lake Michigan, visible through the windows that line the outer wall of the room, serves as the perfect imagination boost. INSIDE VOICE
Turn July up to 11 Go out there and let the music lift you up, Chicago! Here are three of our July picks for getting the groove in your heart— and in your KEELY FLYNN neighborhood. After all, kids learn early that the best musical experiences are outof-doors, hands on and turned way up.
Bantu Fest
With the goal of “bringing cultures together,” the 4th annual Bantu Festival celebrates diversity, food from more than 20 countries and music from local and international faves alike. Save on airfare and travel with the fam to Africa, the Caribbean and South America, all without leaving the Hyde Park neighborhood. Admission is entirely free, too! Kids won’t know what to dive into first, with the abundance of arts & crafts areas, the Children’s Village with hands-on experiences of each featured culture, and the African drum & dance lessons—the latter of which is for all ages and stages. (No worries, you’re among friends, here.) July 28, Midway Plaisance, 60th Street and Ellis Avenue, Chicago; bantuentertainment01.com

KIDS EAT CHICAGO Don’t miss performances from Miss Jamie’s Farm, Super Stolie, The Stu Show and singers from Bubbles Academy. July 14-15, Grant Park; kidseatchicago.com
Yes, the Taste of Chicago is the world’s largest food festival. (Noodle on that for a second.) But no, “food” isn’t the only reason to converge upon Grant Park—Chicago’s front yard— with roughly a million of your closest friends; the musical lineup at recent Tastes has inspired some to dub the week “Tasteapalooza.” So is it worth bringing the smallest of concertgoers downtown to get funky with the likes of George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic as well as to witness whatever the heck The
Flaming Lips have up their technicolor sleeves? (Um, yes.) Not only are there loads of kid-friendly activities and musical opportunities during the weekend portion of the fest but, in a beautifully cost-effective change of pace, admission to the Taste of Chicago—including lawn seats for the Petrillo Music Shell concerts—is entirely free. July 11-15, Grant Park, Jackson and Columbus, Chicago; cityofchicago.org
Square Roots Fest Lincoln Square’s beloved Square Roots Fest is a weekend-long party that not only touts musical headliners the grownups are jonesing to see (The Jayhawks! Matthew Sweet!) but is bringing the fun for the younger set at the Kids Stage (Little Miss Ann! Nick Davio & Friends!) as well. Besides, when’s the last time you took part in a Family Barn Dance? Come for the indie rockers and local crowd-favorites, stay for the craft beer and nightly dance parties. Presented by the Old Town School of Folk Music and the Lincoln Square Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce, this is also your chance to jam out (with the kids, too!) in the city’s
pitch-perfect “jam session” neighborhood. July 13-15, Lincoln Avenue at Montrose Avenue, Chicago; squareroots.org

My kids break all they touch. It’s why I don’t have nice things. My entire house is comprised of brown furniture and brown carpet to hide the mud that clings to my children like Pig-Pen. I sold most of my wedding crystal and expensive dinnerware on a local moms’ site for $2 because I felt sure it was their only chance at survival.
MARIANNE WALSH
My Christmas ornaments are shatter-proof. My margarita glass is made of plastic. When it comes to bikes, the boys demolish them faster than we keep up with repairs. Two have been lost to theft. A giant snow pile claimed another one this winter. So when acquaintances and family rid themselves of old bikes, I eagerly take them. No questions asked. I am practically a safe haven for vintage Schwinns. Until my kids murder that Schwinn. The biggest dilemma is when donations arrive in electric pink with a white daisy basket attached. My youngest son, Joey, insisted we spray paint one such offering last week. I agreed before I realized that Chicago doesn’t actually sell spray paint within city limits. I drove out to the suburbs and stocked up on an excessive number of cans, unsure of how many I actually needed. Dazzled by the array of colors and metallic finishes, I arose the suspicion of the cashier who asked for three forms of
identification. Upon returning home, I carefully lined the driveway with a tarp and started spraying away. Amazed at how enjoyable spray painting can be, I dug around my garage to locate more things to coat. Old bean bag boards! Hockey sticks! My flip flops! The fumes had me high as a kite within 10 minutes and craving Doritos. I loved how neat the spray paint made the world. It was as though I was holding a magic wand, granting new life and a chance to be perfect again to everything around me. I felt like the Botox fairy. A few hours later, I came crashing down. Hard. I cried when I realized I spray painted half the lawn mower metallic orange. While it was fun to explore my creative side, I am grateful that spray paint is not easily accessible in Chicago. My vice personality clearly reared its ugly head. And the Cheetos bill alone could have bankrupted us by September.

Pickiness is… With apologies to Charlie Brown: Pickiness is … one kind of ice cream/ French fries and nuggets/Wonder Bread/Pickiness … is standoffs at dinner/pulling the hair from the sides of your head. My daughter Viva’s eating habits are inscrutable. One moment, chili-laden Korean fried chicken is ambrosial fare, the next, MATT BORESI ham is too spicy. One day, strawberries are her favorite, the next day they’re bouncing off my forehead. The advice from doctors, experts, and wellmeaning bystanders is useful … except when it isn’t. Small portions, modeling, bribes, patience, enticing condiments … they work at random intervals, but more often than not end in tears, pouting and the dreaded gagging. (Believe me, once the child starts gagging at the very notion of the cheese stick or green bean, wave the white napkin, the battle has been lost.) I believe it was Einstein who defined ILLUSTRATION BY STEPHEN SCHUDLICH insanity as “thinking you can get your child to eat when they don’t feel like it.” And yet, parents continue to have tense confrontations at the table and let children stare at one asparagus stalk until the sun goes down and comes up again. I’m a person who’ll eat anything, high, low, exotic, quotidian: ortolon bunting, wax lips, croissan’wichs. So, Viva’s reluctance to try new things—or old things of which she’s grown weary—is foreign and frustrating. I’ve always considered one’s willingness to try new things an expression of strong character. Conversely, I consider reluctance to try new things to be a food crime. But that’s just not what it means with little kids— they just have really sensitive palettes and really scaredy brains. They taste bigger, they feel more. I must remind myself that the process of broadening Viva’s mind and her palette will be as long as her childhood and feel like the labors of a gourmand Sisyphus. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a worthy task—it’s just a task at which I’ll largely be unsuccessful as a percentage of attempts. It’s her role to lose her mind at the table over nothing. It’s my job to suffer silently and try again the next day. Now please excuse me while I go pour barbecue sauce on a cauliflower floret. Viva Acceptance. Viva Viva. Viva Daddy. Viva is 6. Daddy is about 7x that age. They live happily with Mommy in Chicago.

YOU
Styling CHERYL LEAHY
summer
Summer is in full swing, so are you bringing your A game in all areas of iconic summer events? Here are a few summer bucket list scenarios and how to knock them out of the park!
The music festival What to eat: I could eat multiple appetizers instead of a main course, and music festivals like Ravinia are the place to bring your best. When going with a group, coordinate what you are bringing, otherwise you will end up with eight wheels of cheese and 10 boxes of crackers. Believe me. What to wear: A maxi dress makes for the perfect picnic lounge wear. I
add flat ankle tie sandals to navigate the grass, and always bring a blanket scarf for when the sun goes down. What to drink: Why not mix it up with a mixed drink? There are so many canned cocktails that are as delicious as they are portable. My new favorite is the Chicago-created Dia de la Paloma, a refreshing mix of Tequila, grapefruit and lime.
The backyard BBQ What to eat: People love to mix and mingle, so anything messy or that involves utensils can be a burden. My favorite appetizers are served ved on a stick, and you can enlist the kids to help lp assemble them! Here are two of my favorite combinations: marinated Feta cheese + kalamata olive + cucumber + cherry tomato OR cheese tortellini + salami + cherry tomato + green olive. What to wear: Many women avoid shorts like the plague, but done right they can become a comfy, cute option for a bags tournament in the backyard! I found a gingham ham print with a tie waist from Target and paired d it with a simple white T-shirt, adding low wedges dges or simple slides. What to drink: Ask friends to bring a six-pack ack of their favorite craft beer and host a mini tastasting. Set out 2 oz. glasses next to a galvanized tub filled with ice and let attendees discover a new favorite.
The baseball game What to eat: Although hot dogs are tradition, there tra many more gourare so ma options available met opti to fans tthese days. The Cubs are featuring a Roasted Cauliflower Sandwich and Beef Sandw Barbacoa Tacos, Barb and Sox fans can ssnack on Maple Glazed Bacon on a stick and Elotes, which is seasoned, roasted corn ro off the cob. Make sure to plan your food purchases prior to entering the park to
resist those nachos that beckon after a beer or two. What to wear: Layers are a major player at any outdoor ballpark. Check to see if your seats are in the sun or shade (rateyourseats.com) and dress accordingly. I generally wear boyfriend jeans, a team T-shirt, sneakers and add a hat because who is looking at your hair when Yu Darvish is on the mound? What to drink: Wrigley has the classic Bob Chin’s Mai Tai, but pop into Draft Kings for a Frozen Sweet Tea to mix it up. Guaranteed Rate boasts more than 100 different beers, so pick up a locally made Yum Yum Pale Ale or a Good Ryes Wear Black IPA.

STORY AND PHOTOS BY MEGAN MURRAY ELSENER
T
here can never be too much red, white and blue around the Fourth of July. So get a package of fun red and white paper straws to create this festive wreath for all your barbecues and festivities. And if there are leftover straws, make some fun kiddie cocktails to enjoy while watching the fireworks.
Materials: u Cardboard u 144-count red and white paper straws u Hot glue gun and sticks u Scissors u Blue construction paper
Directions:
1 2
On a piece of cardboard, create a floral ring about 6 inches in diameter.
Apply glue to the first inch of a full-size straw, then adhere to the cardboard ring so that the end is flush with the inner ring. Continue to add full-sized straws all the way around the inner ring evenly.
3
Cut more full-sized straws to be three-quarters length. Then apply those straws with hot glue on the top and in between the first layer of straws. Again make the flush end even along the inner ring.
4
For a third layer, cut more straws in half. Then add the third layer with hot glue and the half-sized straws. You can even alternate with the leftover onefourth size straws as well.
5
Either trace a star or draw freehand stars on blue construction paper. Cut out and adhere with glue to the wreath. If needed, secure a small loop of ribbon or twine on the back of the wreath with glue. Hang and enjoy! Megan Murray Elsener is a Chicago Parent contributor and mother of three.

s Jeff Mauro was conducting one more on-camera interview after winning Food Network Star in Season 7, young son Lorenzo climbed into his lap. “Life is just going to change for the better and I’m going to set a great example for him and still be a family man while living out this dream,” Mauro was saying.
He looked down at little Lorenzo, then nearly 3, and said, “What’s Daddy going to be on?” Lorenzo, who now wears a pendant of St. Lawrence, the patron saint of chefs and comedians, said “Cooking show!” “That’s right: cooking show,” Mauro said. Lorenzo then peered off camera and asked: “Can I climb on the ladder?” In his most dad voice, Mauro quickly said, “No, you cannot climb on the ladder.” Standing in Maggie Daley Park nearly seven years later, Mauro laughs. “I’ll never forget that moment. It was real, there was nothing staged about that,” he says. “This isn’t a performance, that’s why we live in the same

neighborhood blocks i hb h d I grew re up, bl k away a from tons of family. I knew our life would change at that moment, and it did, but it was my job as captain of this ship to steer it in the right direction and through the calmest waters possible. There’s a lot to the entertainment business that can decimate a family.” Mauro, an Oak Park-River Forest High School grad and Bradley University alum, has worked to keep his family the No. 1 priority through his success. He started by marketing himself as “The Sandwich King” as a contestant in 2011 on Food Network Star. Though his rise through the ranks as a celebrity chef in the last seven years has seemed quick, before that, the deli owner-turned-actorturned-chef worked for more than a decade on his craft. He is one of four
children, ch hilld and says his hi immediate i di t and d extended family worked in restaurants and helped set him on his career path. “I kind of engineered my life to do what I’m doing right now,” Mauro says. “It wasn’t overnight, some people are like: what does it feel like to be an overnight success? And I’m like, ‘I was 32. I lived in Los Angeles four years, and failed in my own city for four to five years, so it wasn’t an overnight success.’” Longtime Chicago residents may have seen him in his run as a waiter and then Tony in “Tony and Tina’s Wedding.” He parlayed that into some stand-up, then a stint in Los Angeles, eventually returning to his roots as he and wife, Sarah, a nurse also from Chicago, came home and CONTINUED ON PAGE 22

began a family. “Ultimately, I thank my wife, Sarah, who, it wasn’t only, ‘Oh, you can do it, Honey,’ but thank God she was a realist,” Mauro says. “She said, ‘make sure we’ve got a backup. If you don’t get a TV show, what are we going to do?’” When Lorenzo made the Mauros three, the family lived in University Village. With Lorenzo nearing 3, about the age he was starting to tackle new foods, Mauro was crowned Food Network’s newest star. Though Mauro was surrounded by the exotic foods of a chef, he says introducing them to Lorenzo is all part of the parenting experience. “Just because we’re around more food, it’s not like he’s eating nigiri and tamago by the spoonful,” Mauro laughs. “He still loves cheeseburgers and pizza. It’s my job to lead by example and help him try new things.” Like all parents, there are

Becoming a dad helped Mauro refine the direction he wanted to take his career and work even harder to earn a spot as a Food Network Star. “I think I was always gravitated to performing and being an entertainer and believe it or not, television has better hours than restaurant chefs, and I knew when I had a family I didn’t want to be a traditional, backof-the-house restaurant chef,” he says. “As much as I love that work, the hours are so grueling and I’m a baby when it comes to that. I didn’t want to miss out on the formative years.” Just this year, Mauro’s schedule includes the opening of four new Pork & Mindy’s restaurants—of which Mauro is a partner—and Mauro’s latest

Sensory-Friendly Sunday
For the first two hours Sunday, 10 a.m.-noon, Kids Eat Chicago goes sensory friendly thanks to Autism Home Support Services. A normally quieter time, the volume goes down for the entertainment and activities to create a safe, judgment-free environment more welcoming for families with special needs. “It’s really about helping our families enjoy as many social outings as they can,” says Shelly Andrews, marketing
director for Autism Home Support Services. Both Saturday and Sunday, Autism Home Support Services is sponsoring a quiet tent for parents and kids who need to rest, relax and recoup. Kids with sensory issue and their families want to go out and enjoy the same things as their peers without fearing a public meltdown, Andrews says. And Autism Home Support wants to help them do that, she says.

Bring on the
treats S
BY AMANDA SIMKIN ome people measure the arrival of summer by mercury climbing up the thermometer, but Chicago foodies know that the true arrival of summer is marked by packed patios and rooftops, lines snaking outside ice cream parlors, and of course, the scent of BBQ wafting through Chicagoland neighborhoods. It is enough to make you put down your beach read, get up from your towel and dig into some of Chicago’s most delicious summer treats like these.
Mario’s Italian Ice, Honey Butter Fried Chicago Chicken, Chicago May 1 is circled on many Chicagoan’s calendars because it marks the seasonal opening of Mario’s Italian Ice. The variety of unique flavors (watermelon, cantaloupe and pomegranate just to name a few) and authentic recipes (including real fruit chunks!) makes standing in long lines completely justified.
Rainbow Cone, Chicago If you are looking for the ultimate summer in Chicago Instagram snap, a visit to Rainbow Cone is a must. This kaleidoscope cone has been helping Chicagoans beat the heat since 1926. The combination of chocolate, strawberry, Palmer House (New York vanilla with cherries and walnuts) and pistachio ice cream topped with orange sherbet is not only a feast for your eyes but also your taste buds. For those a bit less adventurous, eat up cones and sundaes that feature only one flavor. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
Whether you take advantage of the cozy patio or carry out your meal to enjoy at your favorite park, your summer simply isn’t complete until you bite into one of Honey Butter Fried Chicken’s juicy and flavorful drumsticks. Be sure to try a side of the swoon-worthy mac ‘n cheese. Food allergies? Take a look at the menu for dairy and gluten free, as well as vegetarian and vegan, options— there’s definitely something delicious for everyone who walks through the door. Closed Mondays.

Johnnie’s Italian Beef, Elmwood Park and Arlington Heights
While it is open to debate, many Chicago foodies have deemed Johnnie’s to be the winner of the battle of the beef sandwiches. What makes it reign supreme? Maybe it’s the way the beef is shaved, maybe it is the peppery gravy or maybe it is the perfect flavor combo when you pair your hot beef with a cool, refreshing Italian ice. Just be sure to bring cash when you visit since both Johnnie’s locations are truly old-school Chicago joints and don’t accept credit cards.
Gene & Jude’s, River Grove Fair warning, if you prefer ketchup on your hot dog, take your business elsewhere. But you will most likely regret it since Gene & Jude’s hot dog and fries combo has been recognized as America’s #1 hot dog on more than one occasion. This straightforward hot dog stand only has counter service so be prepared to have an outdoor picnic or chow down in the car. And if you are lucky enough to score a babysitter, Gene and Jude’s is open until the early morning hours on weekends so you can get your red hot fix even without the kids.
Hecky’s, Evanston While you might enjoy firing up your own grill, take a day off and indulge in authentic, Creole-inspired BBQ at Hecky’s. Options include pulled pork, baby back ribs, turkey drumsticks, wings and more. One bite of the homemade authentic BBQ and you will know why people have been flocking to Evanston for the past 30 years. As the saying goes, “It’s the Sauce!”

Stop the slide Tips from learning specialists to keep kids’ brains engaged over summer BY MEGAN MURRAY ELSENER
W
hile your kids are soaking up the sun and enjoying lazy days and maybe even later bedtimes, are they forgetting some of the things they spent the other three seasons learning? Summer slide is real. Studies show that on average, students’ achievement scores decline over summer break by one month’s worth or more of school-year learning. “Kids can lose two to three months of critical thinking skills over the summer and math skills are hardest hit,” says Julie Crawford, owner of Mathnasium Buffalo Grove and Mount Prospect. “Students typically don’t get the repetition needed to really master and retain the skills being covered in class, so any break will degrade their learning progress.” Yet summer can be used as a way to make learning more fun and hands-on. “The key to preventing the summer slide is to keep kids
engaged without realizing they are applying the same inquiry process teachers require during the school year,” says Wil Greenwald, owner of Code Play Learn. “Look for opportunities for them to think, explore, examine, analyze, inquire and ask questions.” Here are some ideas from educational experts to keep those kiddos learning and exploring over summer break.
Play and play some more u Create Lego challenges where kids are asked to build a Lego creation to accomplish the challenge. u Let the kids take apart an old or broken appliance and see how it worked. Many kids have no idea what is inside their tablets or smartphones. u Create a scavenger hunt. The hunt can require the kids to apply math, map reading, measuring and more as they work their way through the clues. u Play games at home similar to Guy’s Grocery Games on the Food Network. Give each kid a meal type, a set budget for ingredients and

6/14/18 10:44 AM
then let them get creative. Let them research food ideas, build their ingredients list, figure out how they will spend their money and then try to cook the meal. u Dedicate a night to board games like Monopoly that are strategy based and require communication, counting and money management to keep kids’ minds engaged. Wil Greenwald, owner of Code Play Learn
Make math real u Play games that include strategy and critical thinking skills, such as Kanoodle and Rush Hour, which can be played independently. Or try chess, Battleship, checkers and Connect Four to build strategic skills. u While driving in the car or waiting for an activity to start, challenge your child to try to count to any number, by any number, backward and forward.
u Sneak math into cooking. Take a simple recipe and have your children double it or half it. For more advanced kids, have them convert the measurements to metric measures. u Make sense of coins and money. Start a change collection jar and set a goal. Have younger kids start by counting two different coins to determine the total and have them decide if they have enough money to “buy” a certain item. For older kids, give them a $1, $5 or $10 bill and the price of an item in a store. Ask
A Full Spectrum of Fun
them to make change. Have them take it further by first calculating the tax, computing the total price and then make the change. u Do a little reading and math everyday. Keep it fun and focused on concepts they were challenged by in the past year. If you are going to have them practice and review some basic skills, find a new way to do it. Julie Crawford, owner of Mathnasium Buffalo Grove and Mount Prospect CONTINUED ON PAGE 32

SUMMER SLIDE
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 31
Spark reading through new finds u Most local libraries have summer reading programs or contests with incentives to motivate kids and keep reading part of your family’s daily routine. u Going on outdoor trips to nature centers, museums, farms and zoos is a great way to learn about new things. Take pictures, investigate new things and then do some research when
back home about what they saw. This is a great way to learn new vocabulary and spark new interests. u Give your child a chance to preview content they will learn in the coming year and encourage them to check out books on the subjects. Check with your school about curriculum and reading lists for the upcoming year to get a jump start. u Hobbies can also spur a child’s learning. If baseball is a child’s passion, there are so many great ways to leverage the love of the game to connect to the world of books and reading. Then top off the learning with a trip to the ballpark to catch a game. JoAnn Paldo, reading and learning specialist, chicagoreadingspecialists.com
Get moving u The brain needs “exercise” consistently, let the kids pick out something they are interested in and then take a field
trip related to that topic. So if they want to learn more about the stars, head to the Adler Planetarium or get a telescope to examine the night sky. u Set goals for a summer “bucket list” together to hit various topics of fun, learning, exploration and new experiences. Then schedule those things into your summer calendar.
u Set a good example and take the time to learn something or do something new yourself. Or try something new the entire family can learn together. Tiffanie Sperling, managing director at enerGEEwhizz Megan Murray Elsener is a Chicago Parent contributor and mother of three.

The perfect summer dinner comes off the grill with symmetrical marks and can be eaten by anyone with teeth. It comes vegan, Kosher and even with parts we don’t talk about. July 19 marks National Hot Dog Day, a holiday worth celebrating in Chicago (with tomatoes, white onions, mustard, a dill pickle, sport peppers, the brightest sweet relish on the planet and a dash of celery salt). The Chicago Dogs are off for the day, but three other ballparks are happily serving their own versions of the Chicago dog: Kane County Cougars, Windy City Thunderbolts and Joliet Slammers.

GWN Dragon Boat
The Chicago International Dragon Boat Festival is more than a series of races in Busse Woods; it also includes cultural performances, a Health Wellness Village, food trucks and a Kids Zone full of games and activities. For the uninitiated, Dragon Boat racing dates back more than 2,500 years. A portion of proceeds from the festival helps Adaptive Adventures, a Wilmette-based organization that promotes sports opportunities for kids, adults and veterans with physical disabilities. 9 a.m.-4 p.m. July 28. Free. gwndragonboat.com.
Since we’re all about food, take a walk through some of the best foodcentric fests around. Head west for the Naperville Rib Fest July 4-7, which includes ribs, a petting zoo and a magic show. Next, hit the Windy City Smokeout July 13-15 at the Chicago River for Southern-inspired fare from some of the best Chicago has to offer. Of course, Taste of Chicago runs from July 11-15, with Kids Eat Chicago on July 14-15. At the North Shore Taco Fest July 19-22 enjoy the area’s best taco-centric restaurants. If you’re willing to travel across state lines, the annual Pierogi Fest in Whiting, Ind., is good for those looking for all things polka and pierogi July 27-29. Finally, check out “That’s Weird, Grandma: Stories About Food,” a play from tales written by Chicago Public School students and performed by Barrel of Monkeys. It runs July 23 through August. WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS
Celebrate with flare
T
his Independence Day marks the 242nd birthday of the Declaration, and more than enough reason to party. Which is something that Americans can’t wait to do in parade and picnic form. If hosting your own celebration is just too much, there are parades aplenty from which to gather candy and a slew of carnival rides to spin on to officially observe the holiday. Fourth on 53rd
Fourth on 53rd This is the celebration that the Founding Fathers of Hamilton fame would have wanted: a picnic, a parade and live music all rolled into one. The parade travels along Lake Park, Hyde Park Boulevard and makes its way to Nichols Park, where the food and festival will follow. 11 a.m. July 4 parade; 4thon53rd. com.
Naval Station Great Lakes July 4th Celebration Families and friends are welcome, even those without a sailor in the U.S. Navy. The base opens for two days, complete

with carnival rides, live concerts and a Kids Zone. As this is a military base, there’s an indoor rock wall for kids to climb and a paintball arena for adults. There will also be military displays throughout the grounds. 3-11 p.m. July 3, 3-10 p.m. July 4; mwrgl.com.
Northwest Fourth Fest
N Northwest Fourth Fest Five days of IIndependence Day observing includes o rides, concerts, food rid and more food, and ends with a grand fireworks on July 7. This year’s display o Fest opens on July 4 Fourth Fes with a Children’s Bike Parade. The fest is located inside and outside of the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates. 8:45 a.m. July 4 bike parade, see website for schedule; northwestfourthfest.com.
Grant Park Music Fest Independence Day salute A little John Philip Sousa, a little Aaron Copeland and a hint of John Williams is enough to spark the patriotic juices. The Grant Park Orchestra, as part of the Grant Park Music Festival, will prepare you and your family for the fireworks set off at Navy Pier by musically setting the tone for the day. If you can’t make the 6:30-8 p.m. performance on July 4,
hit up the open rehearsal from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on July 3. grantparkmusicfestival.com.
3D fireworks As if a decent fireworks display weren’t enough, the first 10,000 patrons at the Skokie Fourth of July Fireworks Festival receive 3D glasses to view the entertainment. There’s also food, drinks and live bands in the parking lot of Niles West High School preceding the big show. Noon parade, 5 p.m. celebration at Niles West, 9:30 p.m. fireworks; skokie4th.org.
Turtle racing If you prefer your Fourth of July holiday to take a slower turn, head to Hinsdale for the turtle races. With more than 20 trophies awaiting winners, the turtle races start as the Hinsdale Parade ends at Burlington Park. Also at the park there are a slew of activities for kids including inflatables, a Ferris wheel and face painting. 11 a.m.-3 p.m. July 4; villageofhinsdale.org. Hillary Bird
