EDITOR’S NOTE SPONSORED

Trees follow the sun’s signals Isn’t it fun to play outside after dinner in June? Daylight lasts much longer now than it did in winter, when it got dark in the afternoon. Since then, each day has been a few minutes longer than the one before. Longer days mean trees and other plants can get more done too. They can collect more of the sunlight they need to grow twigs and leaves. Look at the ends of the branches to see smaller, newer leaves. But there’s about to be a change. One day in the third week of June will be the longest of the year. After that, the days will start growing shorter again, bit by bit. It will still be hot in July and August, and you will be lucky if you have the green shade of a big tree to play in. But the tree will have gotten a message from the sun: Time to start thinking about winter. The shorter days tell trees and other plants to slow down their growth and begin storing water and food. You won’t notice it because the change will come slowly. But by the time school starts, there will be much less time to play outdoors before bedtime, and the first leaves will turn golden and fall from the trees. The signals of the sun guide trees and other plants and animals through the changes of every year.

Grab a bucket Here it is June and I’vee failed to plan anything g fun for the girls to do this summer. Knowing this, they alternate between happiness (that they get et to hang out on the couch inside and TAMARA L. watch YouTube videos while I’m at O’SHAUGHNESSY work) and disgust (that yet again, I’ve absolutely ruined their summer). I could beat myself up about it. I could scramble to find camp openings and classes that would entertain them. But I’m not going to. They are old enough to get off the couch and find something interesting to do all on their own. Just like my girls, we could all likely use some motivation and fresh ideas to fill up a summer bucket list. If things weren’t so busy around here, my summer bucket list would look something like this: A trip home to Maine to sit on my favorite rock on my favorite rocky shore and to gobble up all of the fried haddock I encounter. Hot days spent soaking in the rays while alternating between napping and reading. Nightly walks with my Indiana National Lakeshore girls that are slow enough to talk about anything on their minds, but fast enough that I shed the weight I put on over the past year. Weekly picnics in the park without the girls or the husband fussing about the bugs. Rearrange the house (again), give it some new paint and fun throw pillows everywhere to give us all a new outlook on life. What’s on your summer bucket list? For great ideas, check out our calendar, plus ChicagoParent. com always has the very best of everything that Chicago offers families. Happy summer and Happy Father’s Day to all the great dads out there.

When your family is complete, consider Essure® permanent birth control. Essure is the only non-surgical permanent birth control • Over 99% effective* • FDA-approved and available in the US for over 10 years

• Non-hormonal • May be covered by your health insurance plan at no cost†

The Essure® inserts are permanently placed in your fallopian tubes. Unlike getting your tubes tied, the Essure procedure is non-surgical. It can be performed right in your doctor’s office in about 10 minutes. There’s no downtime to recover—most women go home about 45 minutes after the procedure and return to their normal activities within 1 to 2 days. The Essure Confirmation Test is given 3 months after the procedure to verify the inserts are placed correctly and your fallopian tubes are completely blocked, providing permanent birth control. To learn more about Essure and find a doctor, visit essure.com or call 1.877.ESSURE4 (1.877.377.8734)

Indication Essure® is permanent birth control that works with your body to create a natural barrier against pregnancy.

Important Safety Information Essure is not right for you if you are uncertain about ending your fertility, can have only one insert placed, are or have been pregnant within the past 6 weeks, have had your tubes tied, have an active or recent pelvic infection, or have a known allergy to contrast dye. Talk to your doctor if you are taking immunosuppressants. WARNING: You must continue to use another form of birth control until you have your Essure Confirmation Test (3 months after the procedure) and your doctor tells you that you can rely on Essure for birth control. It can take longer than three months for Essure to be effective. Talk to your doctor about which method of birth control you should use during this period. Women using an intrauterine device need to switch to another method. If you rely on Essure for birth control before receiving confirmation from your doctor, you are at risk of getting pregnant. Please see additional Important Safety Information about Essure on next page.

*Based on 5-year clinical study data. †Some restrictions may apply. Visit essure.com/aca to learn more or contact your health insurance provider.

CHIPAR0615_011.indd 1

5/14/15 1:03 PM

Important Safety Information (continued) WARNING: Be sure you are done having children before you undergo the Essure procedure. Essure is a permanent method of birth control. During the procedure: In clinical trials some women experienced mild to moderate pain (9.3%). Your doctor may be unable to place one or both EssureÂŽ inserts correctly. Although uncommon, part of an Essure insert may break off or puncture the fallopian tube requiring surgery to repair the puncture. Your doctor may recommend a local anesthetic. Ask your doctor about the risks associated with this type of anesthesia. Immediately following the procedure: In clinical trials some women experienced mild to moderate pain (12.9%) and/or cramping (29.6%), vaginal bleeding (6.8%), and pelvic or back discomfort for a few days. Some women experienced nausea and/or vomiting (10.8%) or fainting. In rare instances, an Essure insert may be expelled from the body. During the Essure Confirmation Test: You will be exposed to very low levels of radiation, as with most x-rays. In rare instances, women may experience spotting and/or infection. Long-term Risks: There are rare reports of chronic pelvic pain in women who have had Essure. In rare instances, an Essure insert may migrate through the fallopian tubes and may require surgery. No birth control method is 100% effective. Women who have Essure are more likely to have an ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside the uterus) if they get pregnant. This can be life-threatening. The Essure insert is made of materials that include a nickel-titanium alloy. Patients who are allergic to nickel may have an allergic reaction to the inserts. Symptoms include rash, itching and hives. The safety and effectiveness of Essure has not been established in women under 21 or over 45 years old. Essure inserts do not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases. Talk to your doctor about Essure and whether it is right for you. You are encouraged to report negative side effects or quality complaints of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

A

t the confluence of the east and west branch of the DuPage River sits the brand new Knoch Knolls Nature Center, featuring a variety of activities for families to discover. As you approach the nature center, you walk through an outdoor replica frame of the first water-powered sawmill in the area, built in the 1830s. That’s where you’ll find the nature-themed playground with lots of special features, including a slide that’s accessed from the top of a rock climbing wall. The wall itself features fossils, and finding those is a fun activity you can do

with your feet on the ground. The playground offers a variety of equipment, from pieces that are completely original to old favorites like a teeter totter. We wandered around the other side of the building to the deck overlooking the pond. The scenery was lovely, and we tried to find the goose eggs

that were mentioned on signs warning of very protective parents-to-be. Inside the Knock Knolls Nature Center, visitors will find exhibits, including a 900-gallon freshwater tank that provides a glimpse into the world of the river. It’s a chance to discover how the DuPage River impacts the ecosystems and wildlife of the area. The nature center is the highlight, but the park, with 4.5 miles of trails, offers lots of fun as well. Families can also play a round of disc golf or pack a picnic to enjoy. Each season, the nature center also offers a variety of classes on nature-related topics for all ages. Shannan Younger

GOOD TO GO

An escape to Loews hotel Family friendly option offers the best of Chicago

G

ive your family a little escape from reality right here in our beautiful city. Loews Chicago, a 14-story wonder located just off the Magnificent Mile, offers two great options for families. We were lucky enough to stay as a guest and take advantage of the Chicago Children’s Museum Package (starting at $249 a night), which proves that even a swanky hotel like Loews knows what kids like. From the moment we checked in, the staff was extremely attentive and friendly to my two nephews (ages 3 and 5), giving them a grab bag of toys and puzzles to enjoy throughout our stay. Upon arriving at our adjoining rooms, the delights

continued, with cool camouflage backpacks packed with a water bottle, stuffed cow, copy of Max Explores Chicago and mini flashlight, magnifying glass and compass for a scavenger hunt adventure. While we weren’t able to try the hotel’s pool due to some maintenance, we still enjoyed exploring the hotel and taking in some of its distinctly Chicago flair. Even the bathrooms give a nod to our great city with cool street map wallpaper that only enhances the sleek design of the room. We also loved tasting some true Chicago flavors, thanks to a delivery of Goose Island Root Beer and Garrett’s popcorn for the grownups and milk and cookies for the kids. After a great night’s sleep with Navy Pier lit up in our windows, we were able to enjoy a complimentary in-room kids’ movie and

were surprised with another book delivery—Journey Around Chicago from A to Z. Then it was on to one of our favorite museums—the package includes admission for four people to the Chicago Children’s Museum. While you’ll want to factor in parking at Navy Pier, the $15 certainly seemed worth it when we were watching the boys putting out imaginary fires in “Play it Safe,” literally bouncing off the walls in the temporary “Move It!” area, or dusting off hidden bones in “Dinosaur Expedition.” By the time we left, we were definitely tired, but content. Our whole stay was a great reminder that you don’t have to go very far to have some blissful away time— sometimes it’s right in your backyard. Elizabeth Diffin

Crepes in the park Sweet and savory French pastry in Lincoln Square

U

nless you frequent Welles Park in the summer, you might not know about one of the north side’s best-kept secrets: Crepes in the Park, a charming food stand open from April-October that serves made-to-order crepes. Located on the north side of the park near Lincoln and Sunnyside, the stand offers either “sweet” or “savory” varieties. For the sweet crepes, customers create their own recipe with a choice of three ingredients such as fruit, nuts and chocolate. It is then topped with a huge helping of whipped cream and doused with powdered sugar. Fresh strawberries, sweet cream cheese, caramel, peanut butter, bananas and almonds are just a few of more than

two dozen options. The savory menu is essentially a meal, with menu items including chicken fajita with sun-dried tomatoes; ham and cheese; chicken pesto with parmesan; and spinach and ricotta. We’ve found kids can often split a savory crepe, leaving room for a sweet one for dessert. Kids love watching the crepes being made while parents appreciate the price—$4 for a sweet crepe and $6 for a savory one. Crepes in the Park is open daily from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. It can get crowded on weekends, especially when there is a baseball game going on at the park. But hop right in line: this tres bon taste of Paris is worth the wait. The owner can also arrange for a crepe stand at parties and street fairs. Linda Marsicano

Renovated InterContinental offers new kids package

W

e enter our recently renovated room in the historic tower at the InterContinental Hotel downtown, but it’s not the spiffy, modern décor our kids notice first; it’s the goodies that await, including a Wii console with five of their favorite games. But a lively game of Mario Kart Wii is just the beginning— the InterContinental recently introduced a package geared toward families with kid-friendly amenities that raises kids to new heights. Literally. The package cleverly includes two tickets to the Navy Pier Ferris Wheel.

Other perks include a deck of playing cards, a complimentary movie with popcorn and a sweet treat from Dylan’s Candy Bar. When not enjoying the amenities that come with the package, families tend to congregate at the hotel’s pool, which is gorgeously historic with plenty of space for parents to either join in or watch from the tiered stands. And with the hotel’s central location right on Michigan Avenue, the city’s many familyfriendly sights and activities are but a short walk away. Families looking for additional sweets will find them right downstairs in the lobby at Eno’s, which serves scrumptious flights of chocolate with flavors like salted chocolate caramel, milk

almond toffee and macadamia praline. And while the kids will be too busy with all their swag to notice, parents will adore the comfy, posh rooms that recently underwent a $13 million makeover. Linda Marsicano

Let’s start with the food. Heaps of steaming, mouth-watering, authentic food await you at every turn. Anything in the Lao family of restaurants has been acclaimed by many as the top Chinese food in Chicago, and these restaurants offer plenty of simpler options for picky eaters. Joy Yee’s Noodles is the perfect choice for kids with its wide array of noodle dishes. For those seeking a little history, check out Won Kow, which has been in business for more than 90 years.

2

Get some bubble tea to go. Make sure to have kids sample some bubble tea, which is sold at basically any eatery in Chinatown. Fruity flavors like mango and strawberry are perfect for the little ones, who love bursting the bubbles in their mouths, and almond and coffee flavors will be a fave among the adults in your group.

3

Do some walking around. Chinatown has a ton of history. You’ll see the famous Chinatown Gate and directly across the street is—legend says—the lucky Nine Dragon

Wall. Check out the Chinatown Square Zodiac statues to see which animal represents the kids. Be sure to have a little play time at Sun Yat Sen Park, where you can play Chinese Chess, or Ping Tom Memorial Park, which sits along the Chicago River.

4

Experience the traditions. Make sure to check out the Chinese-American Museum of Chicago, which has rotating exhibits detailing Chinese culture, as well as the Chicago Chinese Cultural Institute, where you can experience food tours and kid-friendly cultural traditions such as kite-making and papercutting crafts.

5

Top it off with a souvenir. The little shops that lace the streets of the neighborhood are filled to the brim with Hello Kitty novelties, colorful kimonos (they come in child sizes, too), tasty Asian candies and souvenir samurai swords. If you’re looking for a one-stop-shop, check out Giftland, which has plenty of little trinkets for kiddos to take home. Emily Adams

3 tips for a positive camp experience Whether it’s your child’s first or fifth time away at summer camp, there are certain must-do’s: 1. Encourage independence. Try not to stress how much you (Grandma, the hamster, the mailman) miss him/her. Mention how proud you are instead. 2. Write letters mailed the old-fashioned way. 3. Set a good example, i.e. if food isn’t allowed, don’t sew a secret pouch into your child’s pillow to sneak snacks. You’ll not only teach your child that breaking the rules is OK, but their bunkmates may have a food allergy. Joani Plenty, 30 Second Mom contributor

MOM OF THE MONTH say it takes a village, it’s truly been that way for us, which has been just amazing.

Mom working for a cure

Kathleen O’Malley Husband, Matt, infant twins Sean and Shea

K

athleen O’Malley’s wishes for a family came true on Jan. 19, her birthday, when her twins were born. But within 48 hours, life’s happiest moment would be overshadowed as doctors diagnosed her with stage 2 breast cancer. “So we went from the ultimate high of having these beautiful new babies to the worst possible scenario we could think of. It was a difficult week, to say the least,” she says. But she is a survivor.

>>

How have you managed? I look at it as I’ve always looked at everything else in my life, good or bad: Why is this happening and what am I learning from this? How can I grow from this? It was very hard to get there. At first I was very angry and very upset. We had moments of how are we going to get through this. We have had so much unbelievable support from friends and family. ... When they

What’s the scariest part about being a new mom with cancer? Initially, the first thing, thinking am I going to die and am I going to see my children that I worked so hard to get and that we’ve wanted so badly. Once I got past that, the next thing I thought, Am I going to pass this to my daughter? That’s the scariest thing for me right now. I don’t know what this will mean for her or him, potentially. My hope is that it will be gone and that there will be a cure by that point. What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far? You really can’t take life for granted. Literally in the blink of an eye my entire life changed. What was important to me just shifted so drastically. Also when good or bad things happen in your life, you figure out who your true friends are and who you can count on.

How to help Team Kat is still collecting donations at bit.ly/1KY2WWT. “People just have been so generous,” O’Malley says. “It’s been just awesome.”

What is the one thing you’d say to other first-time moms? Take each day as a blessing, and that you eventually will sleep. What’s next? O’Malley is nearly finished with chemotherapy and is preparing for a double mastectomy this summer. She says she’s feeling strong. “I’m very motivated to do everything in my power to make sure I help get information out there and to get as many people tested (for the BRCA gene), and hopefully where we’re working toward that cure sooner than later.”

Create summer fun with a DIY car wash Looking for a way to get a chore done that’s also entertainment for your kids? Take your children to a do-it-yourself car wash! You know, those places where you pull in and get to hose and scrub your car in a private stall. All that soap and water? They’ll think it’s a blast. And there’s nothing more fascinating than a giant, noisy vacuum. Plus, you’ll probably find that missing tooth/ sock/Lego set stuffed somewhere in the back seat while you’re at it. Good, clean fun (and a fresh car, too)! Cynthia Miller, 30 Second Mom contributor

GOOD SENSE EATING

Dad’s eating for two While it’s a well-known fact that a mother’s diet prior to pregnancy influences her baby’s health, research suggests a father’s diet before conception can also have lifelong consequences for his children. Prospective fathers give their children the best start when they consume adequate vitamins, minerals, protein, phytonutrients and healthy fats by eating plenty of plant foods and CHRISTINE PALUMBO other whole foods. One nutrient to watch is folate. A McGill University mouse study found that the folate levels of dads-to-be may be just st as important for the prevention of certain birth defects as those of the mother. Good sources of folate include leafy greens such as romaine lettuce and spinach, citrus fruit, asparagus, cantaloupe, taloupe, broccoli, beans, lentils ls and okra. Good sources of folic acid—the supplement nt version of folate—include clude enriched pasta and bread. Fats are significant, t, too. Polyunsaturated fattyy acids improve sperm membrane brane fluidity and flexibility, y, while saturated and trans fats are linked to decreased sperm quality. Other nutrients worth optimizing include selenium, zinc, vitamins C and E and beta carotene.

Body weight counts A prime time for dads to shape up is when a couple is trying to get pregnant. “Dad is usually so removed from it,” says Cindy Baranoski, MS, RDN, pediatric nutrition therapist at Easter Seals DuPage and the Fox Valley. “It’s a way to pull Dad into this. It’s his responsibility, too.” In addition to nutrient intake,

Baranoski explains that conceiving can actually hinge on a man’s weight. “Men Men are more likely to be sub-fertile if their body mass index is b 30 or above.” It’s surprisingly easy to reach that BMI. For eexample, a 5-foot-11 man who weighs 215 ma has a BMI of 30. pounds h does overweight Why do fertility? Being overreduce fer weight aaffects the hormones needed to reproduce and in most cases, can impact a man’s sperm count. The decreased testosterone, decreas increased estradiol and increase elevated endorphins from obesity can decrease sperm production. A man who is productio underweight also may unde have trouble with sperm quality. In addition, research suggests that fathers whose BMI is 30 or above at the time of conception pass on a predisposition to their children and grandchildren to be overweight, develop diabetes or both. Since it takes about three months to produce fully grown sperm, men trying to have children could try cleaning up their diets a few months ahead of time, even if it’s temporary.

Grilled asparagus Serves 4 Ingredients 1 pound fresh asparagus, trimmed and peeled 2 Tbsp. olive oil ¼ tsp. salt Freshly ground black pepper Fresh lemon juice, optional

Directions 1 Preheat a gas or charcoal grill. 2 Place asparagus on a plate. Drizzle oil over the asparagus and turn spears until they are coated. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and turn again. 3 Grill asparagus for about five minutes over a hot grill. Each minute or so, roll each spear halfway. The spears should begin to brown in spots (indicating that the natural sugars are caramelizing), but should not be allowed to char. 4 Remove from grill and serve with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice, if desired. Nutrition information per serving: 80 calories, 4 g carbohydrates (1 g sugar), 2 g protein, 7 g fat (1 g saturated), 160 mg sodium, 2 g fiber, 141 micrograms folate, 20% DV vitamin A, 10% DV vitamin C.

OUTSIDE

MEREDITH SINCLAIR

June is my absolute favorite month— in small part because it’s my birthday month, but in extra large part because of how much anticipatory excitement June inherently possesses. June is the Friday of summer. So in preparation for the next three months of fun in the sun, I’m sharing four ways to get yourselves outside to PLAY! Let’s go.

Play with your moves

We are always looking for ways to get our kids off their devices and outside movin’ and shakin’, right? That’s why I am loving the new Twister Moves SKIP-IT Game and Hula Hoop. These two classics have a new “game” with their built-in counters that keep track of all your kids’ twists and turns. Add the Twister “Moves Tracker” band (sold separately), and your kids can keep track of all their moves and scores across the various toys. Game on. Twister Hoop: $14.99, SKIP-IT Game: $19.99, Moves Trackers: $14.99. All available at major retailers and hasbrotoys.com

Play on the sidewalk

1

Play with your pals

Summertime is stocked with all sorts of gatherings that scream for a little playful mingling among guests. Give them something fun to do over cocktails with the new Kooba game that combines darts, backgammon and your awesome “flinging” skills. Using two long crisscrossed sticks and a special magnetic “aero” that flies toward a target as you pull the sticks apart, players move up the board, attack each other’s pieces and ultimately strive to ring the Kooba in the center for the win. Move over Bocce, there’s a cooler game in town. $69, koobagame.com

Sidewalk chalk is a staple of any summer fun supply kit, and every year the folks at Crayola come up with new ways to kick up this kid favorite. This year is no exception with the creation of Outdoor Color Foam and the new Rainbow Rake. The colored fun foam comes in a batch of cool hues and allows kids to squirt and spray on sidewalks, grass or other surfaces without fear of harming their skin or clothes. Water washes it right off. The Rainbow Rake helps kids create five colors at once as they artistically “rake” the driveway or sidewalks around the neighborhood. Rake: $9.99, Color Foam 2-pack: $7.99, toysrus.com

with 4 Play your wheels There’s nothing like a new set of wheels to get kids playing with their pals. Say hello to the Micro Mini 3-in-1 ride-on/scooter that grows with your child from ages 1-5. Designed with young children in mind, the Micro Mini 3-in-1 features soft edges, a stable upright threewheeled design, and quiet, non-marking wheels that can be used indoors as well for those rainy summer days. In blue, aqua, green, pink and red. $114.99, amazon.com ChicagoParent.com June 2015 29

gallbladder surgery? I possess the muscle tone of a sloth. Producer: NOT A PROBLEM. We will make you look stunning! My mind whirled. Was this the normal progression to international acclaim and fortune? Perhaps donning some rhinestone slippers and a sheer teddy was the back door entrance into a threebook publishing deal with Simon & Schuster? The Steve Harvey guy did say they wanted moms to feel beautiful. I was a mom and I definitely wanted to feel beautiful! Right as I was about to agree to the show, I remembered a few key points: I have pretty much slept in my husband’s boxers and a tank top for 12 years. Lingerie itches. My kids go to Catholic school. I would never be able to look Sister Jean in the eye again. My husband works in a Chicago firehouse. This sort of thing would get mileage for YEARS.

PU

Recently, a miracle happened. I actually won something. The Parenting Media Association bestowed a national Gold Award on this column. Fancy PhDs and college professors christened me awesome. I patiently awaited the inevitable glory and paparazzi this would most certainly bring. Sure enough, the phone rang. It was someone representing Steve Harvey. I was stoked. My kids and I love Family Feud. The producers were probably casting nationally recognized columnists for an upcoming taping. The conversation went along the lines of: Producer: So we’re doing lingerie makeovers for moms and we think you’d be great! Me: You want me to wear a thong on The Feud? Producer: No, this isn’t for The Feud. This is for the Steve Harvey Show. And everything will be extremely tasteful! Me: So tasteful garter belts? Got it. Are you aware I’ve had three C-sections and

For once, I completely set aside the desire to win by any means necessary. I am not positive as to when exactly it happened, but I have definitely lost my old bravado and willingness to try anything. Missing out on this experience did not feel as much like a loss as I dreaded it would. I guess in many ways, I have already won everything important. It took 41 years, but my trophy shelf is full.

Talk back

There have been countless times where I wished I had not grown up in the 1970s and 1980s. My biggest complaint? I never won anything. There were no trophies for eighth place. I did not get ribbons for participation. While my older brother’s award shelf was crowded with basketball and track trophies, mine was a lonely little island holding a medal from the fifth-grade MARIANNE Bible Bowl and a “Perfect Attendance” WALSH certificate printed on Ditto paper. If I was not such a competitive person, this would have been a non-issue. Yet I craved victory so much that I once ditched my volleyball-deficient best friend in gym class to play for a team with a better shot at Junior High PE supremacy.

Missing out on real life Dad discovers he needs to put down the phone

“T

his? This? This?” My 22-month-old son kept repeating his mantra as I walked up the stairs checking email on my phone one day. I looked up absentmindedly to discover he held an open, blue permanent marker in one hand, with the cap in the other. I quickly shoved my phone in my pocket. “Can you hand that to Daddy?” I said, pointing at the offending marker. By some miracle, he willingly placed it in my hand. In that moment, I understood the stress hostage negotiators must feel on a daily basis. After a cursory examination of the main floor, I found no magic marker graffiti art. Victory. While not all examples are this dramatic, it is clear that my wife and I spend too much time on our smartphones around our son—a behavior he picks up on. Not being one to shy away from attention, my son sometimes angles his head, so it becomes visible either below or to the side of the phone. “Hi,” he’ll say, with a wide smile across his face.

Technology is convenient, but it can become addictive. My wife and I are on our phones frequently for work, but we are also caught up in the Facebook newsfeed gaze. If we keep scrolling down, maybe we won’t miss the one potentially life-changing post/message/moment, we rationalize to ourselves. If a life-changing moment is due to occur, the reality is that it is more likely to occur within the room versus as content fodder on our phones. It is a constant battle. For the most part, we avoid cellphone usage at dinner, and we try to spend more deliberate time playing and interacting with our son. I absolutely love reading to him every night and sitting down on the floor to play with him. Such a vivid imagination is beginning to take hold, as he starts learning his ABCs, numbers and a wide range of words. I look forward to playtime with him. That means more time spent together without some type of media device resting between us. Any strategy that can also help keep blue marker off the walls also has to be a good thing. Matt Brennan is a Sugar Grove dad, an experienced freelance writer and blogs about all aspects of fatherhood at SpiralingUpwards.

If a life-changing moment is due to occur, the reality is that it is more likely to occur within the room.

How to be your son’s hero

IN 10 EASY STEPS 1

Surprise him with tickets to his first Blackhawks game. Splurge on 100-level seats. Remember, you want to be his hero, not his half-hero. Take a picture of his excitement:

down to your seats and watch him soak in the essence of being one of the first people inside a 20,500-seat arena.

5

Under no circumstances do you miss the National Anthem. There’s nothing else like it in sports.

6

Buy him ice cream, and give in when he asks for another treat and another after that.

7

Let him taunt Jonathan Quick, the L.A. Kings’ goalie, who’s close enough to hear your son shout, “You’re not quick! You’re a slow butthead!”

8

Frame this picture of him with Tommy Hawk:

2

Pick him up from school early and head downtown to beat the rush hour traffic. Bring his iPad to distract him from requesting bathroom stops. CHARGE THE iPAD.

3

Eat the pre-game meal at Ed Debevic’s and allow him to hurl insults right back at the staff.

Community At The Gardner School, we not only care about your children, but also our community. From visits to our school from local charities to education in the classroom about helping others, The Gardner School fosters a strong sense of community. We even take it a step further by offering Camp Gardner each summer, a summer camp designed to bring the community to TGS. From visits from the local police stations and firehouses, to collecting food for the homeless and supplies for our troops, Camp Gardner’s focus is to teach your children about helping others while honoring those who help us.

VIVA DADDY

Invincible summer: Lessons from my 3-year-old

Albert Camus once wrote that, “Even in the midst of winter, I found within me, an invincible summer.” It probably sounds better in French, but it’s something like that. As a Chicagoan, I’ve found that, even in the midst of summer, I harbor the specter of winter. Even as I drink a summer ale or “Safety Dance” to an MATT ROCCO ’80s cover band at a street fest, part of my brain still shivers with dread over winters past and future. REAL PARENTS IN THE TRENCHES

How young is too young to let the kids go to the movies without an adult/older sib?

I started going alone in seventh grade, 12-13 years old. Assuming it’s an appropriate film, they should be responsible enough to handle it by then. Jeff Mezydlo, Chicago

16 is the magic number for us. I was allowed to date when I was 16; I was responsible, had a driver’s license and two jobs. It worked out well for me; hoping for the same for our children. Cherish Walsh, Streamwood

Younger than 11. Anything younger than that, I wouldn’t leave them at home alone for more than 15-30 minutes, so I definitely wouldn’t leave them in a theater of hundreds of strangers. Rani Morrison, Oak Park

@

It’s so hard to know what is the “right age” for things in today’s society. I would say 12 and under is too young to go to the movies alone and that might even be a little young! It depends on the maturity of the child. Jackie Sergeant, Richton Park

While 13 is an “unlucky” number, I say it’s the perfect time to loosen the reins a little bit. They call it “PG-13” for a reason, no? Ryan Salzwedel, Chicago

Funny, we were just talking about this. Her dad would say 16, I would say maybe 13, but I would hide and sit in the back to reassure myself. Rebecca Moulfarha, La Grange Park

Dad got game? See how he stacks up against former Chicago Bulls player Toni Kukoc in a friendly basketball game with nine pals at The Ritz Carlton’s basketball court. This new exclusive opportunity is a gift dad will never forget, and includes a night in a deluxe lake-view one-bedroom suite, an hour on the court with Kukoc, professional photographs, branded sports items, autographs and a special in-room amenity after the game. $12,500; fourseasons.com/ chicagorc

2

Float dad’s boat. Give him fun on the water without any of the work. Freedom Boat Club, which offers a fleet of boats at Montrose Harbor, gives members unlimited access to its boats, plus access to boats at 8,600 clubs around the country, says Michael Johnston, director of sales and marketing at Freedom Boat Club. The club staff does all of the work while members just enjoy their time on Lake Michigan. $2,500-$6,500 one-time fee ranges depending on size of the boat, $99 a month for smaller boats to $300 a month for boats 22 feet and larger; freedomboatclub.com

Send dad to boot camp. The Chopping Block offers a twoday hands-on grilling boot Susan Ryan camp that will leave dad the family Photography expert on ribs, chicken, flank steak, pork chops, scallops and assorted veggies and desserts on the grill. $350, class takes place at The Chopping Block’s Lincoln Square location, 4747 N. Take him out to the ballpark. If dad bleeds Cubbie blue, give him a guided tour of Wrigley Field that lets him step on the field. A bargain at $25 at cubs.com/tours. Or if the Southsiders have him cheering, put dad to work at U.S. Cellular Field dragging the in-field at the bottom of the third inning in a Sox Fan Experience. $1,500, which includes four VIP seats and one parking pass as well as training pregame; chicago.whitesox.mlb.com Donna Bozzo contributed to this article.

Feed the need for speed. The Richard Petty Driving Experience at the Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet will get dad’s blood pumping. Choose from ride-alongs starting at $109 for three laps or put dad in the driver’s seat of a NASCAR race car for 30 laps, $1,299. 5 ways to make the most your time together BY SAMANTHA SCHULTZ ith school out for summer, we can finally start concentrating on enjoying our days to the fullest. Whether you’re traveling or sticking close to home, creating a family summer bucket list will help you keep track of your adventures and ensure that you’re squeezing every ounce of fun out of June, July and August. The best bucket lists are unique to your family and incorporate things your family loves to do, things they simply must do and a variety of new places and activities to try out. Use these ideas to get your creative juices flowing.

In the sunshine

At home A rainy day or just no motivation to pack up and go? Create a fort with every blanket and pillow you own and watch a new favorite movie. Serve a Popcorn Bar complete with different sizes and shapes of bowls, popcorn mix-ins and toppings such as cheddar and parmesan cheeses. You can even do a sweet dessert popcorn with candies and different types of chocolate. For the neighborhood: Invite friends and family over and host a backyard “drive-in” movie. Have the kids create their own cars out of cardboard boxes and use pillows as the seats. A projector and a garage door are all you need to host a movie under the stars, making yours the most popular house on the block. Go even bigger: Grab a blanket, dinner and roll up to the Jay Pritzker Pavillion at Millennium Park Tuesday nights June 23-Aug. 25 for a free movie night. This summer they are rolling out the big screen—the newest, most souped-up outdoor screen measuring 40 feet by 22 ½ feet. It’s so big, there’s not a bad seat in the park.

Ready to enjoy some rays of sunshine? Have kids create a personalized lemonade stand using old cardboard boxes and stools from a children’s table. Kids will love acting as mini-entrepreneurs and it’s a great way to make the most out of a sunny day! For the neighborhood: Bring art to life and put together a paint and crafting afternoon in your own backyard. Set up canvasses along a fence and let kids go to town creating unique pieces of art. When everyone’s done getting messy, hose them down for even more outdoor fun. Go even bigger: Create an art scavenger hunt by hitting either the Skokie Sculpture Park on McCormick Boulevard between Dempster and Touhy avenues (sculpturepark. org) dotted with more than 70 sculptures or the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park at Governors State University in University Park (govst.edu/Nathan_Manilow_ (govst. On the go Not enough time for a full family vacation, but needing some time away? Plan a day trip with your family and head out to one of the summer’s fabulous festivals (see page 71 to find the perfect one for you). For the neighborhood: While you won’t want to take the entire neighborhood, you can fill up your car with friend favorites and head out for a day at the beach. You can try some of Chicago’s Lake Michigan beaches or head a bit farther to Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Just be sure to check the lifeguard warnings before heading out! Go even bigger: Head west to the Mississippi River and Galena for a hot air balloon ride. Galena On the Fly, buyabaloonride.com, will take your family (up to 14 people, minimum age 6) on an outing you’ll never forget. Launches, seven days a week, occur near Eagle Ridge Resort and Spa. Try to capture a sunset.

Water world Need a little relief from the hot summer sun, but don’t have a pool? Set up a series of water activities in your own backyard to keep the kids cool! A water table makes a great starter station and older kids will love playing with water guns and water balloons. For the neighborhood: Make a giant water bed outside using tarps and duct

tape—an activity that kids will love rolling around on until the water leaks and everyone gets wet! Or get other families to chip in and rent an inflatable water slide. Go even bigger: Head out to Illinois’ largest water park, Raging Waves Waterpark in Yorkville, for a day that combines fun, sun and waves—a quintessential summer getaway. CONTINUED ON PAGE 46

Do some good Spending time together giving back as a family makes everyone feel better. Whip up batches of no-bake cookies for the firemen at the local firehouse, mow and rake an elderly neighbor’s lawn or weed their flower beds. Visit a nursing home to bring some cheer (call for permission first). For the neighborhood: Organize your neighbors to do a volunteer project together this summer. Chicago Cares has 250 monthly volunteer projects all over the city (chicagocares.org), or Feed My Starving Children, a meal packaging effort, is always looking for hard workers (fmsc.org). Go even bigger: Encourage your kids to join others across Chicagoland to help kids just like them by collecting change for the Eric & Kathy Radiothon Change Makers in support of Lurie Children’s Hospital. Change can be dropped off at all Chicagoland MB Financial Bank locations, Eric & Kathy Changemakers Account, June 22-Sept. 4. Secrets

for success How to be the family babysitters and nannies want

D

By CORTNEY FRIES

esperate for a date night, parents can rush out the door as soon as a sitter arrives. Think about that babysitter left in the lurch without the 411 on the family’s nighttime routines, especially when the baby wakes up and howls like a wild coyote and there is no milk in the house. Do you think that sitter will want to come back? Caring for other people’s kids, in their homes, on their terms, is tough work. If parents expect top-notch childcare, we, in turn, need to be exceptional employers. What makes the best childcare relationships work? With summer kicking into high gear, we talked with Chicago-area nannies and babysitters as well as parents and parenting experts to secure their secrets for childcare success all year round.

ILLUSTRATIONS BY STEPHEN SCHUDLICH

Get serious about expectations “You need to be specific and honest about what you really want,” says Katie Bugbee, parenting expert at Care.com. Lay out expectations for hours, flexibility, household chores, personality type and activity level. A babysitter is an occasional helper while a nanny manages more responsibilities, like helping with homework and cooking. “Even if it’s only a few hours a week, if you depend on that person, consider the job a part-time nanny,” says Bugbee. “An elevated description will get stronger candidates.”

Put details in writing

Throw it all out there

When you professionalize the hiring process, everyone feels like they have equal footing. Spell out the job description, vacation and sick time in a contract. “Families without contracts usually run into problems within three months,” says Erin Krex, president of First Class Care Inc. “It’s commonly over something promised in an offer but later forgotten.” When details are in writing, you both have reminders. “Put together a Household Handbook,” suggests Marcie Wolbeck of Cultural Care Au Pair and Chicago mom of three. “Write down things like which child hates spinach and your approved discipline methods. It’s a great resource for caregivers to better meet your expectations.”

The interview is the time to see if you click and to make sure your requests stick. Be clear on your expectations and confirm they can deliver. “Throw her all the curveballs she could face,” suggests Bugbee. How would you encourage him to eat dinner or handle bedtime battles? “If you’d like her to save smartphone use until after the kids are asleep and she raises her eyebrows, realize it might not be the best

fit,” says Tammy Gold, author of Secrets of the Nanny Whisperer. Just like you expect the caregiver to be honest, tell her exactly what you need. “Put everything on the table in the interview and try not to ask for other things afterwards,” says Branndi Camp, a nanny for nine years. How duped would you feel if you kept being asked to take on additional responsibility without increased pay?

Respect each other

National average rate for babysitters is $13.44 per hour

While parents insist they don’t want anyone telling them how to raise their children, caregivers say they don’t want to be treated like slaves. Reciprocal respect is imperative. “If you feel like you have to check on your child and his nanny all day long, you probably don’t have the right nanny,” says Chicago mom Amanda Hughes. Teach children to respect the caregiver, too. Give her control and don’t let little ones push the limits. “I tell kids if we both want me to come back, we need to follow the rules,” says Nubia Camacha, a babysitter for 30 years.

Make time to talk Communication is key. Knowing that it’s hard to discuss issues with kids at your legs, schedule a regular time to chat with caregivers. “If you feel uncomfortable

1 in 4 families tip on top of the hourly rate 1 in 10 parents would pay an extra $5 per hour for last-minute sitters Top two reasons families don’t hire a babysitter: It costs too much (57 percent) and it’s too stressful to find someone they like (51 percent) 62 percent of parents have hired a babysitter without checking references

about something, don’t hold back,” Camp says. Nothing is more rancid in a relationship than negative feelings festering. Instead of feeling resentful, find a positive way to discuss the issue. “I’ve never walked away

from a meeting angry,” says Lisa McCormick, a nanny for 27 years. “Even if there was a difference in opinion, we uncovered solutions achievable for both of us.”

Biggest babysitter no-nos are texting (26 percent), playing on social media (22 percent), watching TV (16 percent), having a friend over or looking through their drawers/closets (11 percent) and eating their food without permission (9 percent) Source: Care.com 2015 babysitter survey spending

Show your gratitude When Gold asks caregivers what they like most about the families they work for, the number one response is, “They appreciate me!” Don’t forget to say thank you for everything she does and enables you to do. “If the baby threw up, reward her with a few extra bucks or book another evening of babysitting right away,” says Bugbee. “Flowers and gifts are great, but handwritten notes are the best,” McCormick says. Think about special perks you can provide, too. Caregivers love to brag about exclusive rewards, like hard-to-get concert tickets.

Back each other up Agree on limits and expectations for independence, then follow through. Caregivers cite rules like picking up toys, putting away dishes or tying their own shoes that were relaxed over weekends. Tired moms and dads think they’re making life easier by avoiding battles. “But parents and caregivers need to be seen as a united front in

“Happy parents plus happy caregivers equals doubly happy kids.” — Tammy Gold childrearing,” says nanny Katie Franseen.

Be cognizant of her time, too Canceling at the last minute is the worst, but if your kid is sick, offer to pay the sitter’s fee. If you’re occasionally running late, a phone call will do, but remember caregivers have lives, too. If you want the best for your kids while you’re away, treating their caregivers with gratitude and respect is as important as pay. “Happy parents plus happy caregivers equals doubly happy kids,” Gold says. From Ron Weasley to Anne Shirley, there her ere have been plenty of beloved redheadss throughout history (we’re pretty partial to Prince Harry). And now there’s the chance to celebrate the gingers we know and love, thanks to Highwood Redhead Days. This global celebration originated in Holland, but has its American debut on Chicago’s nd North Shore, complete with “ginger gear and cordgoodies,” carrot cake competitions and a recordbreaking attempt for the country’s largest gathering athering of redheads on Sunday. Be sure to wear blue to help that red ed hair really pop. Free. 10 ighwood. (847) 432-6000, a.m.-5 p.m. June 6-7. 17 Highwood Ave., Highwood. facebook.com/RHDchicago.

Childhood and mud seem to go hand-in-hand—especially when you need them to just stay clean!— and this program is one where they’re meant to get a little dirty. Everything Mud lets kids paint, sculpt and play, all from the ushy-gushy safety of the Children’s Garden. Can’t make it that weekend? All month, kids can make their own Mud Mosaics with dirt and other natural materials or discover which animals live in the dirt at Soil Dwellers. Insider tip: Plan for an extra-long bathtime when you get home. Free with arboretum admission. 11 a.m.-4 p.m. June 6-7. The Morton Arboretum, 4100 Illinois Route 53, Lisle. Even when they live in one of the world’s premier architecture cities, kids can find the concept of building design a bit tricky to grasp. That’s why we love Read and Build, Chicago Architecture Foundation’s monthly program for kids 3-5, which combines listening to a story and creating an art project. This month it’s Iggy Peck: Architect, a rhyming tale of a boy who loves to build with whatever materials are on hand. You might want to hide the breakables, just in case. $5. 10-11 a.m. June 3. And we think there’s no better time than sunny, warm-but-not-hot June to get your offspring off the couch and running around.

At Keeping Kids Fit Day, it’s all about getting kids to go a little kinetic. Kids 3-12 learn teamwork through relay races, navigate an obstacle course and take on other physical tasks, then refuel with healthy snacks. Plus there are fun giveaways as a reward for getting your fit on. Free. Noon-2 p.m. June 13. Oakbrook Terrace Park District, Terrace View Park. (630) 627-6100, obtpd.org. Two great health systems are joining together, Adventist Midwest Health and Alexian Brothers Health System. A new beginning, with opportunity that treasures and respects our faith traditions, past accomplishments and more profoundly realizes our sacred missions. Our name, AMITA, is inspired by words from several languages: friendship in Italian, honesty and truth in Hebrew, and spiritual light and boundlessness in Hindi. AMITA Health reflects our core values of friendship, truth, and mutual respect for all, as well as our faith-based call to healing. AMITA Health is about open, inclusive and compassionate quality care for all, inspired by a legacy of faith, delivered with dignity and empathy. We embrace each person and each family as one of our own.
