very parent wants to raise a smart, involved kid. But the big question is how to go about achieving that goal. We asked some Chicagoland educators who have been working with kids and their parents for years about the top tips they give parents to help children thrive, both in and out of the classroom.
Elementary school kids Give them chores and directions but not answers. Putting your kids to work around the house can have benefits that are less obvious than having a neater, cleaner home.
Wendy Calise, head of school of Countryside Day School in Northbrook, says teachers see a difference at school in children who are expected to participate in the function of their household. “It doesn’t matter if it is a particular chore, but letting them do things for themselves changes how they see their role in the household and in their community. They see that they can make a real contribution,” she says. Calise also recommends parents expect little ones to follow directions several times a day. Doing so not only prepares children to follow the instructions of their teachers, which is critical for success in school, but they’ll also be ready to listen to coaches, directors and even their first boss.

Parents often want to give their children everything, and that includes answers to all their very many questions. But mom and dad don’t have to always have the answers, says Ama Thompson, student support coordinator at Science & Arts Academy in Des Plaines. In fact, she recommends allowing children to wonder, saying it’s a great way to foster inquisitiveness by giving them “space to learn how to think critically and find the answers to their questions.”
Middle school kids Encourage unplugged time and choose activities carefully. Kristi Underhill, a junior high teacher at Grace Lutheran School in River Forest, says
students who seem the most confident and successful have learned to balance screen time with face-to-face relationships and are physically active. “While technology has wonderful applications, we need to make sure that our children learn to appreciate and enjoy simple things that don’t need to be plugged in to recharge,” she says. “Kids can get stuck in a rut where they don’t know how to be creative or enjoy moving their bodies because they are too drawn to playing a game on a tablet.” This is a great time for kids to get involved in extracurricular activities, but that doesn’t mean they have to participate in every opportunity that comes their way. In fact, Inka Kirchenbüchler, assistant principal at the German International School Chicago, believes that often, less is more. “It’s OK to be involved in just one or two activities. It’s better to be involved in less activities that a child truly enjoys than being involved in more that the child has no real interest in,” she says. As an added benefit, she says that when a child is really engaged in an activity that really interests them, “they will cope with challenging tasks with more endurance and persistence.”
All ages Make sure kids have downtime and a chance to build confidence. While having kids involved is good, it’s possible to have too much of a good thing. The experts all agree that kids should not be overscheduled and that they need some downtime. “It is incredibly important for
PHO PHOT OTO COURTESY COUR TESY SY OF COUNTRYS CO TRY RYSIDE DA SCHO DAY CHO OOL OL
children to have time without scheduled activities for a number of reasons. Downtime gives them the chance to relax and clear their minds of the pressures that they face at school, in sports and from friends,” Thompson says. Kirchenbüchler adds, “A rested mind learns much more efficiently.” Alex Laube, high school lead administrator at Cove School in Northbrook, says while there’s a lot of focus on academics and school for kids, that downtime and time away from the classroom can be valuable, too. He says that “discovering one’s strengths is not limited to the school setting, nor should it be” and that unstructured time is often when students discover new ideas and interests. That’s why he encourages parents to provide their children “with a variety of avenues to discover different kinds of strengths to develop confidence and a positive self-concept.”

ith more expected of our little ones in the classroom, it seems preschool is the new kindergarten. “There has been a shift over the past 20 years. The kindergarten I attended is not the kindergarten of today,” says Jennifer Farmer, executive school director at The Gardner School of Oak Brook. It’s a positive change, she says, one that will keep early education in the U.S. in line with the rest of the world. Here’s what parents need to know about making sure kids have the best possible start to their school careers. 10 MAKING THE GRADE 2019
MTG_CP_0119_10.indd 1
In the classroom Preschool should be intentional, says Farmer. “Much of our day is focused on objectives and everything is very purposeful. The children are still having fun, but they are also doing special activities to build their skills.” Leslie Morrison, program coordinator of Summer Leapfrog at Northwestern University’s Center for Talent Development, agrees. There should be a mix of structure with time and opportunity for students to explore, she says. Both help students achieve learning objectives. Kids need to be encouraged to dig deeper
and that even at 4, “it’s incredible to see how deep their learning can be,” she says. That doesn’t mean, however, that little ones should have lots of worksheet time or be drilled on facts. Farmer says it’s about giving kids activities that they have to think about and that may push them a little bit. If it turns out to be something they cannot handle on their own, they still learn the valuable skills that come with knowing where to go for assistance and asking for help. That said, preschool and kindergarten students are not always at the same developmental level. That’s OK, according to Jackie Johnson, kindergarten teacher at Grace Lutheran School in River Forest. “Parents worry about how their child measures up compared to others in the class, and if they should be reading sooner. That’s Special Advertising Supplement

a concern they should let go of,” she says. “Usually by the year end, all students have begun to learn the decoding skills needed to become fluent readers.”
At home What parents do at home can have a big impact on their little one’s school success. Children pick up on their parents’ feelings, so it can make a big difference when you are excited and positive towards their school and education. “Having a positive attitude helps children adjust to social and academic elements that they will encounter throughout their educational careers,” Johnson says. Healthy habits are also crucial for children’s success. “I can’t stress enough how important it is for students to get enough sleep and have a balanced breakfast every day,” says Johnson. “When students come to school without enough sleep, their developing bodies and brains cannot process, and it puts unnecessary stress on them that they do not understand. This causes tantrums and melt downs. When students don’t have a proper diet, they often burn out early in the day and don’t have the energy to maintain daily routines.”
Yoko Avramov, director of Montessori Language Academy in Forest Park, says parents can also help by working on social skills. That can be done with family and by meeting peers in play groups or even at the park. Even playing a game of catch has numerous benefits, both physical and social, because it illustrates how the back and forth of conversation works. Playing catch is also a model for sharing—each person gets a turn to throw, Avramov says. Asking kids what they think and why also helps build their ability to think deeper. Doing so helps kids make connections and create stories on their own, which Morrison says are hugely powerful, especially at the preschool and kindergarten ages. The teachers all said that encouraging reading at home is an important way for parents to get kids ready for school. Avramov suggests sticking with actual books rather than tablets or e-readers and says that parents shouldn’t rush reading. While it is an opportunity to work on letter recognition and sight words, reading with your child simply for pleasure is important and can instill a love of books that lasts a lifetime.

Well beyond the three Rs STEAM works magic in and out of school BY SHANNAN YOUNGER

ur world is changing rapidly, and to make sure that students are prepared for the future, many schools are focusing on the principles of STEAM—Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. The lessons learned, however, often extend beyond facts about those subject areas. Here are some unique and creative STEAM projects happening at schools around the Chicago area that are fostering not only academic interests but also teaching valuable life lessons.
Creating movies and new mindsets

The middle school film-making class at Chicago Friends School uses STEAM principles to craft its films. “Their approach is informed by design thinking in the field of mechanical engineering. To tell the story they want to tell, students must consider optics, audio sampling and frame rates, in addition to more typical art forms of scene and costume design, creative writing and acting,” says Karen Carney, head of school. Eric Patrick, associate professor of film at Northwestern, is the film-making teacher at Chicago Friends and he helps students see first-hand that what they learn in one class can coincide with the lesson from another. “There’s always been an idea that someone is good at math or art, but not both. But contemporary design requires a broad and not just deep knowledge,” Patrick says. “With experiential classroom environments, students have a better sense of the C O N T I N U E D O N PA G E 1 4 Special Advertising Supplement

relevance to topics they like and to their lives. STEAM can help students learn to persevere, noting that Vanguard creates “a safe learning environment where errors and re-dos are normal expected parts of the learning process.” She says that helps children see the internal gratification of success that comes from effort and persistence. “They build endurance and a willingness to take a risk, be creative or try a new strategy because they know how to handle mistakes and failures,” she says.
interplay of these fields rather than having them taught in isolation through rote memorizing.” Carney says STEAM projects help students develop their own creativity and sense of self.
Programming and problem solving “As a teacher, I like that STEAM utilizes students’ problem-solving skills, and they can always use practice with that,” says Katy Rudis, a technology teacher at Immaculate Conception School in Elmhurst. There, students are working on digitally editing photos captured in art class as well as learning coding and software programming skills. Rudis notes that both projects challenge students’ higher-level thinking skills now, and that can pay big dividends later. “Finding new ways to approach a problem is really important as a life skill. Students may not realize it, but they’re learning how to find different

solutions and that will propel them in their jobs and their life.”

painted the layers of the ocean, calculated the rate of deterioration of the reefs, created a book about the symbiotic relationships on the reef, and learned how to help save the reef. Elizabeth Blaetz, head of school, says that with this model, students who may not be comfortable with certain subject areas “grow to like and sometimes love” new subject areas because now they see the

to not know all the answers,” says Druzinsky of their time in the maker space. The interdisciplinary approach of STEAM is evidence there by the incorporation of STEAM projects into all classes, including the humanities. For example, in history class, students may work in the Maker Space to design a fabrication of the Chicago skyline prior to the Great Fire or use the 3D printer to replicate items used in colonial times. Druzinsky explains that the project that uses recent technology of the future to help kids better understand what happened over a century ago is illustrative of Avery Coonley integration of STEAM into the curriculum. “It is the best of the past, present and future—that’s what excites me the most. All are so important, and we don’t want to lose one for the sake of the other,” he says.
Math and social justice go together Frances Xavier Warde School in Chicago recently implemented a new math curriculum, providing the staff with an opportunity to

look at incorporating both math and other STEAM subjects throughout the curriculum. “We kept at the forefront that we want to make real-world connections and STEAM is a way to explore social issues and injustices,” explains Jackie Miller, the school’s director of curriculum and instruction. For example, students examine climate change from a variety of perspectives, including the science behind it as well as the math around the statistics of its impact over time. The different disciplines are also being taught more similarly than in the past. “An inquiry-based model is common in science curriculum, but less so in math. We’ve changed that, and we have a more inquiry-focused model so we are teaching through problem solving, not just with problem solving,” Miller says. As a result, they are focusing on the power of mistakes and struggle. “If we want students to go into the STEAM fields, we need all students to feel that they can be successful. To do that, we have to model what productive struggle looks like,” Miller says.

Help them get comfortable with challenges “Our goal is to set our students up for success in their next environment. Part of doing that is teaching them how to deal with the challenges and setbacks that they will inevitably encounter,” says Alex Laube, high school lead administrator at The Cove School in Northbrook. He says they do so by teaching students “to self-monitor their performance and to advocate for their needs” while problem solving. Parents can also help reinforce those skills. Parents also should try to push their kids out of their comfort zone; doing so provides opportunities to practice problem solving. “For us, failure is an essential step in the learning process,” Laube says.
2
Reading is fundamental “Read, read, read,” says Liesl Stiegman of Stiegman Tutoring in Cary. She says reading a variety

MTG_CP_0119_17.indd 1
of materials will help students succeed on both the ACT and SAT as well as in college and recommends materials that challenges students and increases their vocabulary. Parents can help kids find a mix of books they read just for fun and those that challenge them, and hopefully some that do both.
3
Focus on concentration Stiegman says concentration is often an issue for students, but the ability to focus is important in college. She suggests having kids summarize as they go when reading a passage and encouraging them to back up and re-read confusing parts. “If I had known ‘how to read’ like that, it would have saved me so much time in college,” she says.
4
Teach life skills Laube points out that there is much more to success in a post-secondary academic setting
than just academics. Students also need to develop independence with a variety of practical living skills. “Parents should teach and practice with their student problem solving, managing their own finances, meal planning and preparation, doing their laundry, and navigating transportation,” he says.
5
Remain calm Preparing a child to launch can be stressful for mom and dad, but Laube encourages parents to keep their own emotions in check and keep the family stress level low. “High school students have a knack for finding plenty of stressors on their own— academic, social or even existential. High school should be a time of discovery and learning. Parents should work with their student and their transition counselor to help them discover the program that will help them become their best self,” he says.

Do you love your school? In Catholic schools, we do a great job teaching things like reading, writing, science, and math. But we also spend our time educating the whole child in mind, heart and spirit. Our schools are caring communities where children get one-on-one attention and a strong sense of right and wrong. We provide many things that other schools don’t or can’t. We invite you to take some time and visit some of our schools to see what we believe is important. We believe it’s about finding a school filled with quality faculty who bring a commitment to academic excellence, an atmosphere that ignites a love of learning and a community that is welcoming and supportive.
