EDITOR’S NOTE SPONSORED
Suddenly, It’s Spring When it gets warm in springtime, suddenly plants appear. They sprout from the soil with soft, bright green stems and folded-up leaves. Are these plants new? Not all of them. Some are alive all winter, even though you can’t see them. The roots stay safe below the ground even after the top part, with the stems and leaves, dries up and decays in fall. When the spring sunshine warms the soil, the roots sprout new leaves and stems. Other plants, like trees and bushes, spend the winter above ground. They have stiff, strong stems and branches with tough bark to keep the cold out. In fall, they let most of their water flow down into their roots underground. In spring, it flows back up to the tips of the branches. Then the tree or bush opens its buds and starts growing new, soft green twigs and leaves. Some plants have a different way to survive the winter: as seeds. The plant that made the seeds dies in fall. But the seeds are still alive, and each one contains what is necessary to begin a new plant. When the soil warms and the spring rain falls, the seed starts growing into a brand-new plant, green and bright and full of promise.
Momma lessons I gave up on trying to be a perfect mom a long time ago. Though I accepted that I’d made mistakes and stumble along the way, that didn’t stop me from constantly beating myself up every time I’d look at all the other moms around me doing it “better.” The only way I kept from becoming paralyzed in my parenting TAMARA L. O’SHAUGHNESSY was to remind myself that I needed to trust that I knew what I was doing and let the love for my three kids guide me. In particular, I have always been one of those working moms who instead longed to be on the playground playing tag or cuddled with the kids under a tree with a picnic reading the afternoon away. That’s why this month’s story on the Mommy Wars by a wonderful mom writer, Megan Murray Elsener, resonates with me and I hope it will with you, too. The story’s message, told by some great moms Megan found, is quite basic: We all need to support each other no matter our parenting styles and choices. Kind nd words go a hugely long ng way. It’s really pretty simple when you consider all the other hard d stuff that comes with parenting (hello, pottyy training boys and tween en friend drama). Just enjoy this trip, focus on your own parenting and have each ach other’s backs. As I am finding after nearly 10 0 years in this chair, it truly does go by much h too quickly. Make choices ices that make you and your ur family happy and don’t ’t live thinking the grasss is always greener in someone else’s yard. It’s ’ not, just different. Happy Mother’s Day.

other Nature gets a little boost in the Garfield Park Conservatory’s spring show. For those unfamiliar with Luftwerk, the company known for melding light and sculpture to create incredible art installations, the conservatory’s stunning setting will be an eye-popping primer. Entitled “colorise,” the show uses LED lights,
specially chosen botanicals and a Florescence ceiling to create a garden unlike any you’ve ever strolled through. This show—as well as every other aspect of the beautiful conservatory—is absolutely free. Even better? Families will be able to download (or buy in the gift shop) colorise-inspired coloring books, just perfect for re-creating the spring show’s glory at home. Keely Flynn

odgers and Hammerstein’s tale of feisty, Welsh-born Anna, sent to teach the King of Siam’s multitude of wives and children the ways of Western Civilization is, quite possibly, the absolute perfect show to celebrate Mother’s Day. (If there’s anything more “motherly” than educating and caring for a horde of people—some of them with very loud, very stubborn opinions—well, I’m not ready to hear about it.) “The King and I” gets the Lyric Opera treatment this spring with a star-studded cast including Tony Awardnominee Kate Baldwin (Finian’s Rainbow, Big
Fish) as Anna, and Paolo Montalban (Cinderella) as the King of Siam. Few stories are more lovely than “The King and I” (and few companies are more gorgeous than the Lyric), which delicately spins the tale of how two hard-headed souls meet, disagree, dance and ultimately fall in love. Running just around three hours, “The King and I” is better suited for your slightly less wiggly offspring, your Broadway-enamored parents and a spouse looking to score some serious brownie points. Need yet another reason to love this show? Just like the very best tales in life, this one’s based on a true story, too. Keely Flynn

Chicago Memorial Day Parade If your kids only know Memorial Day as the official start to summertime, expand their horizons. Winding its way south through the Loop from Daley Plaza, the parade—one of the country’s largest, and a tradition since 1870—will feature a multitude of Chicago high school bands. The parade kicks off at noon after a special Wreath Laying Ceremony and recognition of Gold Star families. (Gold Star lapel pins, a symbol of honor for loved ones lost during active duty, are a powerful reminder that the weekend means more than just barbecues.) Get schooled at Emerald City It’s rare to find a family-friendly show where parents are the ones busting through the doors just ahead of their children. Emerald City’s “Schoolhouse Rock Live!” is totally that show.
Running just around an hour and geared towards ages 3-13 (or upwards of 35, say), this is the springtime show you’ll be glad you saw with your kids. Through June 5; emerald citytheatre.com

Make music lovers forever When the Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra teams up with Cirque de la Symphonie, you are in for a dazzling spectacle unlike any you’ve ever seen, as well as a compelling new way to experience orchestral music. Cirque de la Symphonie, comprised of Olympians and world-record holders, brings the magic of “cirque” to traditional music halls. They’ve crafted performances with aerial flyers, acrobats, balancers, jugglers, dancers, strong men and contortionists. (If ever there were a guaranteed way to ensure a future generation of classical music aficionados, this would totally be it.) BY DANIELLE BRAFF he International Home & Housewares Show swept through Chicago, bringing with it plenty of fun new kids’ products ranging from those that help kids sleep (thank you!) to those that are simply fun for everyone. There was one resounding trend when it came to the children and home this year: make it practical but also make it colorful, exciting, fresh and beautiful.

MOM OF THE MONTH
When life
gets real
H
olly Simon knows how to celebrate the small things. This is one mama who has been through a lot, and she’s made it through to the other side.
{M.O.M}
She’s not one to complain about her problems—unless it’ll change your world. Then, she’ll tell you her deepest, darkest secrets if she thinks they’ll get you off the couch and move you to live your life, to start dreaming, to accept yourself just the way you are. It all goes back to 13 years ago when her fifth baby by was born. Simon was panicking cking because her baby arrived d silently. And then, her doctors turned d away from her. Her husband, who was videotaping, whispered to the nurse, “Do you see what I see?” Simon remembers. “He sweetly came over to me and said, ‘I think our baby has Down syndrome.’” Flailing for some understanding of how this sudden diagnosis would affect her baby and how it would change their lives, Simon searched in the eyes of her nurses and doctors. “They said they were sorry, and it put me in the darkest space I could have imagined,” Simon says. So she did what any panicked mother would do in that situation: She reached for her newborn baby, Nathaniel. “I whispered into his ear, ‘I will never let anyone hurt you, I will never let anyone say, I’m sorry for you.’” That was a moment that would alter the trajectory for others who would find themselves in that same situation. Simon decided she needed to re-teach doctors, nurses and others how to approach new parents of babies born with special needs. More specifically, she says, the correct word should be “congratulations,” not “sorry.” Simon began doing awareness events and formed I Am Who I Am, a nonprofit celebrating all children just the way they are. She’s met with everyone from teachers
to L Lady Gaga, but her message is the same: “It’s mess simple stuff that we take for granted—kindness, inclusion,” Simon says. All was going well until Simon spotted a dimple in her breast while trying on a bathing suit at Target. The dimple turned out to be breast cancer. It took Simon the last 1½ years to fight that cancer, with a double mastectomy and chemotherapy. “You lose your mind; you are so sick that you don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel,” Simon says. “If I didn’t have my family, I would have lost it, but Nate made me laugh.” After Simon lost her hair during chemotherapy, Nate asked her to remove her scarf. When she did, he said, “‘Oh my God, Oh my God, you’re so beautiful,’” Simon says. Before and during her cancer treatments, Simon documented her thoughts through a blog, feeling liberated by setting those thoughts free. She decided to take a giant
>>
leap by writing a book, I Am Who I Am, about her life, special needs and her health. It’s part self-help book, part memoir. Cristina Demacopoulos, coowner of Stacked restaurant in Oak Lawn, says she read the book after watching Simon rush over to a sad woman in one of the restaurant’s booths to tell her her child with Down syndrome was so beautiful. “I thought this was going to be a little book about Holly,” Demacopoulos says. “But it makes me want to be a better person. She gives people such a voice, and my life is just better from knowing her, from reading this book.” Simon, who lives in Chicago’s Beverly neighborhood, jokes that Joel Osteen steals her lines. Sure, if you add in many more laughs, a lot more honesty and a few off-the-cuff comments, you might find a hint of Osteen. But those who know Simon love her just the way she is. Danielle Braff

MOM OF THE MONTH
Mom helping moms find their tribe
E
lisa All Schmitz’s tech career began almost by accident. Nineteen years ago, she had just earned her master’s degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University and was pregnant with her first child.
{M.O.M}
“I was looking for the information I needed about that,” she says. “It was 1996 and there were no real pregnancy magazines or websites out there, only books.” She decided to form her own magazine and website. “That changed the course of my life, because the website took off,” she says. “What started as a promotional endeavor became one of the best-known websites for expectant moms.” The initial magazine and website grew to include 43 websites under the iparenting. com umbrella, covering everything from pre-conception through teen years. It also included other magazines, a radio show, a newspaper column and a product review and award program. Walt Disney Company bought the company in 2007. As Schmitz, who today has a son and identical twin daughters, eased Disney through the transition, she brainstormed what to do next. “The conversation had become about mobile and how we were going to reach moms on their mobile devices,” she says. “I had this lightbulb moment and realized that was our next opportunity as an entrepreneur, and that was going to be my next challenge.” The 30-second format TV advertising typically uses, she decided, was the perfect amount of time to deliver content to busy moms-on-the-go. “There is so much noise in the marketplace and everything is vying for our attention,” she says. “If you can do an ad in 30 seconds, you can convey great content in 30 seconds.” So 30Second Mom was born. “We give busy moms on-the-go information that’s going to make their lives better in some way,” she says. “We have a great, growing contributor team made up of experts from all walks of life, from doctors and fitness instructors to financial experts. They are our tribe, and it’s a great way to share messages,
CHIPAR0516_021.indd 1
whether it’s a psychiatrist talking about the importance of self-care and making time for yourself or a fitness expert talking about how to sneak lunges in during the day.” What started with about two dozen contributors in 2012 has grown to about 170 contracted contributors who develop bitesized nuggets of information Schmitz affectionately calls “snackable content.” “It has been so fun, and it has a magnifying effect with women helping other women feel supported,” she says. This month, 30Second Mom becomes even more. “It is amazing. It is so much more kick-ass. I’m very excited where we can go from here,” she says. The relaunch will feature a new visual experience, including big, colorful images with an emphasis
>>
on visual storytelling. “It is so much more user-friendly and easier to navigate,” she says. The website also introduces a fun, interactive element that equates time with money. “Each time you take an action on the site, like post a tip, share something on Facebook or Pinterest, or create your own collection of tips, you earn ‘time’ that accumulates,” she says. The time then can be redeemed for prizes. “We’re moving towards a level of quality that we think is head and shoulders above anything else. 30Second Mom is growing from a baby and blossoming into a beautiful child, and that’s exciting.” Offices for 30Second Mom are located in the Merchandise Mart as part of 1971 Chicago. They are part of the WiStem program, a platform to empower womanowned businesses. “We want to help women become better versions of themselves, whether by offering them tips, hosting their blogs or by being their community, their tribe, their backbone,” Schmitz says. “That’s what I love most of all: Empowering moms and giving them a network. We’re all stronger together than we are on our own.” Carrie Rodovich
Make every moment count! Every moment matters. Every chance to hug. Every opportunity to say, “I love you.” Every choice to be more present. Every intention to be more compassionate. Every decision to pause and talk rather than react. Every chance to sit and connect rather than be busy. Every time you slow down, notice and appreciate. Take the space today to make it matter. WELL PLAYED
Simple ways to play more
Time to get your playful spirit revved up for summer! This month I’ve curated some of my favorite ways to spark playfulness and fun into your everyday. Life moves fast, but don’t forget to find some simple ways to play along the way! MEREDITH SINCLAIR
Play with your home Warm weather and outside playtime have just about arrived, but I always need a reminder that sunny days will indeed be here again. Enter the new ice cream-inspired line from Chicago-based retailer (and one of my FAVORITE shops) Paper Source. If you don’t get happy with a sprinkling of these goodies about your home, well, I got nothing. From banners and dish towels to candles, party hats and napkins, we’ll all be screaming for some ice cream. papersource.com
Play with your workout Call me shallow and easily influenced, but you know what helps me get my excuse-ridden rump to the gym to work out way more often than endless texts from my trainer? Cute workout clothes! Sorry, not sorry. I started following Chase Infinite on Instagram after seeing a few of its wicked cool workout T-shirt posts and now I’m obsessed with the daily inspirational quotes and playful, kick-arse k-arse workout tops. If you need some extra motivation to get your boo-yeah to the gym, maybe these will help. chaseinfinite.com
Play with your ur kid kidss Play with your parenting ng In the old days, the word “hack” k” was not the most complimentary of terms. But in the new millennium, everyone freakin’ LOVES a hack! Especially when those hacks—genius tricks to solve a problem—help us in our day-to-day parenting. Popular blogger and author Asha Dornfest of parenthacks.com is out with her first parent hack book. Parent Hacks: 134 Genius Shortcuts for Life with Kids is a compilation of the best time-saving, problem-solving flashes of genius floating around the interwebs. Let’s make parenting a little easier and more fun, shall we?

GOOD SENSE EATING
GOAL!
Thank good nutrition There’s a reason soccer is the second most popular childhood sport in the U.S: It’s easy to learn, a good workout and fun. And whether your child plays with your local park district or an elite club league, what they put in their tummies can impact performance. Young children who are learning the game and on the field just a few times a week can CHRISTINE maintain their usual diet. “For little ones PALUMBO who are just starting out playing soccer, there really isn’t much more needed than three healthy meals a day and normal healthy snacks,” says Jill Castle, MS, RDN, author of Eat Like a Champion: Performance Nutrition for Your Young Athlete. “However, in middle school and high school, the demands of soccer increase and this may translate to an extra snack after a long practice r i ractice that provides a carbobo ohydrate source and a protein source. These s se two nutrients help reload the muscles with glycogen, the preferred energy source for muscles and promote repair o of muscle tissue.”
Game day A nourishing breakfast is a must on game day. When athletes skip breakfast, they get behind in calories and nutrients. This may affect their athletic performance and cause them to be hungrier later, resulting in poor food
choices and even overeating. Lunch is the mid-day nutritional boost kids need to either prepare for competition recuperate from morning or recupe recupera events. L Lunch should provide an array pro ov of food groups, o ssuch as protein ffoods, dairy, grains, fruit and gr g vegetables. veg get Naturally, Natu ura fluids are also very im iimportant all day dehydration being llong, with hd h one of the big culprits in poor athletic performance. Travel soccer presents its own set of challenges. “The best tip I can give is to be prepared with food on hand. Having a variety of different healthy snacks packed up and ready to travel is ideal because it allows athletes the ability to avoid the concession stand where we know most of the choices there may be unhealthy,” Castle says. “Bring a cooler of fruit, veggies and hummus or other dip, yogurt, granola, cheese, crackers, nut

Talk back
i thhrew up....
had bombarded the poor guy with random thoughts on life and its most pressing questions, including: “Do you think it would be better to play dead when a bear attacks you, or do you think it would be safer to run away?” I learned from the man’s wife that he had enjoyed his time with Joey, despite a lapse in grizzly bear knowledge. Joey is not the kid you want next to you while playing hide-’n’seek or robbing a bank. He works valiantly to keep it together during school, often writing himself reminders to stay quiet. Yet as the proud recipient of Mount St. Joey after seven hours of him holding it all in, I find the explosive verbal barrage overwhelming:
“You know how cousin Gracie got a confirmation name? I want mine to be BOB. Have you seen my red sweater from kindergarten? I was keeping that for memories.” “Remember, Mom, how I threw up in school and on my book and on Mrs. Stankus’ shoes and down the hallway and she called it ‘the Oregon Trail’? It was SPECTACULAR. I wonder who cleaned my math book. Did you ever return that shirt they gave me, Mom? Can I have some cake?” “When you die, Mommy, can you visit me? But don’t be a scary ghost or anything like that. Now that I think about it, you don’t really have to visit me. You can just stay in my heart. I miss Sue.” For someone like me who prefers things “quiet and clean,” Joey has tested the very limits of my patience. The kid also makes me laugh every day. There will eventually come a time when Joey is not with me. He will grow up, move out and hopefully share his enthusiasm and love of everything with the world. Those moms who once told me to worry only when things were silent were wrong. My house will ultimately fall quiet, and the unique and precious gift of Joey will be made all the more obvious. Being his mom, to use his favorite word, has been truly spectacular. Now who’s got cake?

mom, how
He never shuts up. And my house is never, ever quiet. Recently, Joey stood in front of a Cheesie’s food truck, debating his selections. An extremely patient employee encouraged him to take his time. Joey hemmed and hawed before revealing: “I hate cheese.” Undeterred, the young man attempted to steer his young patron towards several non-cheese options. Joey continued to waffle. Finally, the employee took a fresh approach and asked him what he loved most in the world. Without missing a beat, Joey replied: “TALKING.” During a hockey game for his brother, Joey abandoned his usual post as the leader of the younger siblings to corner one of the quiet dads. For nearly an hour, I nervously watched them out of the corner of my eye. I waited for the man to either signal for help or simply walk away. He never did. I later discovered that Joey

“My mom likes things quiet and clean,” my son Joey once announced to a good friend of mine. “True, but how do YOU like things?” questioned a clearly amused Shannon. “I like things LOUD AND MESSY.” Seasoned moms advise that when a house suddenly falls quiet, it is time to worry. The kids are likely planning a coup or plotting some nefarious deed. Based on this hypothesis, I will never experience a moment’s angst with my youngest son.

An I Want My Epidural Back excerpt
S#@! I do that I know I shouldn’t do
Y
eah, I’m THAT mom. Sometimes I do shit because it’s easier or cheaper or just because it’s more fun. Am I worried about the well-being of my kiddos? Sure. Sometimes. But I’m also worried about my own well-being. And if I listened to every overachieving Martha Stewart-y a-hole who looks down her nose at me, I’d probably slit my wrists, and that wouldn’t be healthy at all. So here goes. A bunch of shit I do that I know I shouldn’t do but I do anyways because life is too short to worry so much.
1
I take my kids to McDonald’s. GASP!!! A lot. And damn, does that shit taste good. I mean yeah, I know it’s mostly chemicals, but somewhere in there’s a real potato, right? It’s not like the scientists are standing in a lab putting a bunch of chemicals together and suddenly they’re like, “KABLOOEY, there’s a French fry!”
2
I let the TV babysit them. I mean every month I get the cable bill and I’m like, holy crap, you want how much?!!! And then I’m like, ohhh, I guess that’s not so bad. I just got a full-time nanny for $120 a month!
3
I don’t buy organic shit. Helllllo, do you know what organic shit does? It goes bad in like negative three seconds. And here’s another reason I don’t buy organic. It costs like a million dollars. I mean, I’m standing in the store going, hmmmm, which strawberries should I buy? The ones that are $2.99 and are plump and red and juicy? Or the ones that are $5.99 and look like dried cranberries?
4
I let my kids wear whatever the hell they want as long as they aren’t going to freeze to death or be mistaken for a hooker.
I don’t buy organic s#@!. Helllllo, do you know what organic s#@! does?
5
I let my kids eat dirt. And suck on banisters. And eat crusty old Cheerios off the floor in the car. I mean it’s not like I say, “Go eat dirt,” but I don’t react as quickly as I should. Like last week Holden was licking the elevator buttons and I didn’t react for at least 10 floors. In my defense, a really cute UPS guy got on, so I was a little distracted. You should have seen his package.
6
Speaking of dirt, here are my two favorite cleaning products: saliva and 409. First I use saliva, and if it doesn’t do the job, I get off my lazy ass and go get the 409. So pretty much every surface in my house is either crawling with my mouth bacteria or will make your genes mutate. Want to come over for dinner?

If I suddenly realize that my kiddo forgot to change his underwear that morning, I tell him to change it. Unless he already has his shoes on. Then I say we’ll just change it as soon as he gets home from school, only I usually forget after school and finally remember right before he goes to bed and why would he put on a clean pair of underwear just to go to bed? No wonder his ass smells like ass.
8
And speaking of asses that smell like asses, I don’t bathe my kiddos every night. I mean, hell if I’m letting my kids sit back and take a luxurious bubble bath when I’m lucky to squeeze in a shower two mornings a week. And if anyone needs a shower, it’s the person whose arms were licked up and down even though she kept yelling, “Lick Mommy is NOT a funny game!”
9
I dream about my kids becoming nerds. That’s right. I see all these moms clambering to get their kids into the popular clique and I’m like, are you crazy??? Do you know what popular kids do? BJ rings and coke. Do you know what nerdy kids do? Study and stay home with their parents on Saturday nights. I mean no, I don’t want them to be so nerdy that they get held up by their underpants and get thrown into lockers and shit, but a little nerdy would be awesome. Of course, this may be unlikely considering how cool their parents are. Bwhahahahahaha.
10
I don’t finish shit.

VOICE: LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER CAST
Why I should have listened to my mother!
O
n May 1, some really great storytellers will take the stage for the annual Listen To Your Mother show at the Athenaeum Theatre. So we thought we’d ask the cast members about listening to their own moms.
“Mom was right when she told me I’d regret quitting piano lessons as a child. Ugh, even after all these years, moms remain annoyingly right about most things.” Pete Aiello “I am so glad that I listened to my mother when she taught me to be kind to everyone and have an open mind.” Tracey Becker “I wish I had listened to my mother when she reminded me to say ‘please.’ To this day, whenever I ask someone for something and forget to say ‘please,’ I hear her voice in my head, ‘Say “please,”’ and then I say please.” Kathy Benson “When you feel like you’re on the verge of an epic meltdown, eat a sandwich. Drink a glass of water. And, if possible, take a nap. Not from my mother, but a mother and blogger I really admire, Anne from Modern Mrs. Darcy.” Andrea Burkly “I wish I would have listened to my mother when she told me to not listen to my father. He told me to become a lawyer. My mother told me to become a therapist. After a few years of the law (and of therapy), I realized that she was right.” Francie Arenson Dickman
“I wish I had listened to my mother when... wait, I’m STILL listening to my mom’s advice about love and life! The woman knows!” Megan Drozd “The best advice my mom ever gave is to my future self. When I was a newborn, her mother said, ‘I will not give you advice on how to raise your kids. I already had my turn.’ My mom said the same to me.” Bonnie Kenaz-Mara “I should have listened when my mother said ‘Because I said so.’ As a parent, I now realize that the phrase is the ultimate parenting mic drop.” Mollie Ottenhoff “When she told me to stop bragging about what a great sleeper my first kid was. When I had my second child, she really liked watching that foot go in my mouth.” Rachel Pokay
“I wish I listened to my mother when she would tell my sister and me to be quiet in the car. I have wonderful memories of long road trips with my parents, but now cannot stand the constant chatter from the backseat while I’m driving, especially during stressful moments when I need a quiet moment to focus.” Beth Prystowsky “I wish I had listened to my mother when she said life is too short to be unhappy. So smell the flowers, see the movie, eat the cake and dance like no one is watching. Create memories you will be happy to reminisce over but not necessarily repeat.(And what I heard was “Drink all the coffee, wine, vodka and tequila your body can handle ‘cause NONE of us are getting out of here alive!”)” Sidney C. Reid

Twenty-four years later, I am, in fact, all wrinkly…” Nina Vallone “When she tried to reinforce my orthodontist’s order to wear my retainer nightly by telling me that if I didn’t, my teeth wouldn’t stay put. My two slightly crooked teeth on the bottom wish I had followed her advice.” Melisa Wells

Viva’s favorite cartoon, “Doc McStuffins,” just gave the eponymous character a new baby sister. For families expecting a new arrival, “new baby episodes” are a great learning tool for acclimating preschoolers to impending siblings. For those standing pat at one child (whether for reasons of secondary infertility or personal choice), these episodes spark tough questions. Just as there are emotional and practical benefits to having multiple children, there are benefits to having only one. MATT ROCCO These benefits, however, are abstract. “Babies are cute and I want one in the house” is concrete. Hearing the counterarguments come out of your mouth can be embarrassing: “You know how you don’t all the hitting? The biting? like it when Mommy and The crying? Mom vs.Mom
Six moms’ views on why stay at home and working moms need to stop the ‘Mommy Wars’
I
BY MEGAN MURRAY ELSENER t was once the battle of the sexes. Enter motherhood and it’s the battle of the moms—working moms and non-working mothers passing schoolyard judgment and criticism about how they raise their children and run their lives.
We’ve all heard the subtle judgments like, “It seems like the baby spends more time with the nanny than her own mother,” “That mom has never left her baby for even a minute to use the bathroom alone,” or “She’s juggling so many balls, they are all about to drop.” No matter the choices each
Stay-at-home mom of two
Working mom of two
Amy Hodgman, Evanston, mom of a 4-year-old and 22-month-old I don’t even feel like it was a decision, I just knew I was going to stay home. I have so many friends that work full-time, part-time or that stay at home, and it would be ridiculous of me to judge anyone else. Staying home is hard. Being a working mom is hard. I have felt a little judged when I’ve sensed shock from a working mom I know that I am not losing my mind with no professional part of my life. Or I sometimes feel judged when I don’t have anything professional to contribute to a conversation, just anecdotes about my children. The positives of my situation are I get to see all of their stages up close and personal. I get to witness all of their firsts, rock them to sleep and snuggle them when they are sick. I do feel like I am lacking in personal time, and I have trouble putting myself first. I’m not sure if working would make that feel different or not. I miss adult time with no kids present, but don’t we all? Everyone’s decisions have so many layers, I don’t think it’s our job to judge anyone on what works for them.
Kristen McChristian, Schaumburg, Spanish teacher, mom of a 7-year-old and a 10-year-old For me, it was an easy decision to be a working mom. Our two incomes allow us more freedom to do the activities and vacations we want, while giving me a chance to save for the kids’ college and for my own retirement. Most of the moms I know all realize that none of us has life all figured out or has a smooth motherhood experience. We all know we are just staying above water, so to speak. I think “Mommy Wars” exist because it’s human nature and because of our culture these days. Social media creates an ideal that is unachievable for many moms and that causes some moms to look at other
mother makes when it comes to working, being home or doing a mix of both, somehow it’s often other mothers who are the biggest critics. Here are six mothers’ takes on the “Mommy Wars,” how they made their choices and how they are actively trying to skip the judgment of others.
moms and make comparisons. I think all one can do is not worry what others think as long as we feel good about what we’re doing as mothers.

Working mom of two Kelly Widuch, La Grange Park, senior account executive, mom of a 3-year-old and 1-year-old I work because it’s what’s best for my family and myself. My most important job will always be being mom, but I am lucky to have a second job that supports that. Whether you are a stay-at-home mom or a working mom, I believe we are all trying to do what is best for our families and figure out what works. So I try not to judge
Stay-at-home mom of two Melissa Hanses, Elmwood Park, mom of a 2-year-old and a 1-year-old We decided I would stay home because it is what we wanted and it worked out, so we are blessed. I had worked and made all of my own money since I was 12, so now that I’m working harder than ever before and not getting a “paycheck,” that was a very big adjustment for me. I think the worst mom judging that has happened is over stay-at-home moms and their wardrobe. Listen, if you are a stay-at-home mom and you have the time and energy to get dolled up every day, great, do what makes you feel good. But don’t make other moms feel like a slob for wearing yoga pants and a ponytail to play with their kids! I feel like we live in a “keeping up with the Joneses” society. It’s very sad and if everyone could just learn to be happy with themselves and their situations, I feel a lot of it would go away. In my opinion, most of it stems from jealousy or envy. If you are truly happy with yourself and your decisions, there is no reason to judge or “be at war” with anyone else.
“... Being a good mom— one that works or stays at home—isn’t easy, so most of all, we need to have each other’s backs.” Elizabeth Hess, Oak Park, lawyer, mom of a 1-year-old people’s choices that are different from my own. For a long time I fixated on how to find my own work/life balance. But I have come to the realization that this may not exist, at least not for me. There are days I feel like I can’t do anything right, that I am not giving 100 percent at work or at home. I somehow have learned to cut myself a break and just do the best I can. Women need to support other women and remember how hard this motherhood thing is. What works for me may not work for you. At the end of the day, I think we all do it for the same reason, for the love and well-being of our families, and that’s something to support in my book.
Working mom of two Kerri Joy, Oak Park, sales training & development director, mom of a 2-year-old and a 7-month-old I wish it was a choice to work full-time, but it’s more like a necessity. The positives are I have the ability to utilize my degree and I have time that is “my time.” I think people are always going to judge others. It’s that concept of the “grass is always greener.” No one wants to admit that they are unhappy, so we live in a world where everyone acts like the way they live is the best, instead of being honest and admitting the challenges
they face. Although our society is so modern in so many ways, the idea of motherhood isn’t. The expectation is still to be the “Stepford wife.” If you stay at home, then your house should be clean, you should cook and be the perfect wife. And if you work you should be able to juggle it all: work, come home and cook and never be tired. So “Mommy Wars” exist as a way for people to validate their decisions. Make time for you
W
hen Andrew Desjardins became a member of the Chicago Blackhawks last year, he and his wife, Mandy, were new parents in a city where they knew no one. But Mandy embraced Chicago and the transition to motherhood with Ames, now 1. “When you get through that first six weeks, you realize this is your new life. At first, you are really thrown off, you’re not sure what to expect, then you really start embracing it and start appreciating all the little moments.” Her biggest lesson: Moms need to find time for themselves as well as couple time. “When you give yourself those breaks, you really appreciate the moments when you are back with your baby,” she says. Asked how she would feel about Ames becoming a hockey player like dad, she laughs. “I think being a hockey mom and a hockey wife would be two different things. I’m used to my husband getting knocked around; I think it would be different when it’s your son. ...I’ll just go with the flow and take it as it comes, I guess.”
Don’t compare babies
L
auren Hubert Smoke, best known as kids’ entertainer Miss Lauren, has a ton of experience with babies, so she was surprised to find herself secondguessing everything when Nico was born. “As soon as I got home from the hospital, I started worrying. I know that moms worry. I was terrified of something happening to him. I can’t ever watch Grey’s Anatomy ever again,” says Smoke, who also battled breast cancer while pregnant with Nico. Smoke says she loves everything about being a mom, especially the smiling, laughing and watching him learn new things. Her biggest lesson: “The one thing I’m struggling with still, I found it really hard not to compare my baby to other people’s babies. ... Every baby’s different and as far as milestones go, don’t compare them. They do things on their own time.” About motherhood: “It’s not what I expected, it’s better. Every day gets better and better.” 40 May 2016 ChicagoParent.com m

Trust your own instincts
H
aving confidence as a parent doesn’t always just happen the exact moment your baby makes an appearance. Alexzandra Higgins, the creator of MommyCon, understands that from her own parenting, as well as the thousands of other moms she’s met along the way. But one thing she did learn was that holding her babies made both her and babies the happiest. So she invested in a good carrier. “From that moment, I just felt confident as a parent and that if I just held them close, everything was going to be OK.” Higgins created MommyCon, a nationwide effort with a focus on natural parenting, to bring parents together to support and help each other build their confidence. Her biggest lesson: “Follow your instincts. Wear those babies, just feel love and support and that will get you through it. It just goes by so quickly. ... Savor those first few months and nurture yourself while nurturing your baby.”

Clevon Newell, 12th grade PART THREE IN A THREE-PART SERIES ABOUT OUR CHILDREN AND CHICAGO GUN VIOLENCE
EVERYONE NEEDS TO CARE What you can do to help Chicago’s gun problems
I
BY EMILY ADAMS t’s almost too repetitive to say that Chicago has a gun problem. Too obvious to say something needs to change as the numbers climb with 141 murders and 800 shooting victims in just the first three month of this year.
There is no single answer to Chicago’s gun problem. One issue didn’t cause this problem and one solution will not fix it. But all of us have something to lose
in this fight. If you are sick and tired of reading, talking, watching, posting and tweeting about gun violence in our city and want to really do something about it, you can.
Change your perception He must’ve been into drugs. She shouldn’t have been out that late. He was definitely in a gang. Oh, it was on the South side? No wonder. The stereotypes ingrained in Chicago culture about victims of gun violence have to stop before real change can be made. So here’s the truth: According to non-profit Chicago Survivors, more than two-thirds of the
city’s victims are under age 30 and onethird have no arrest record. In almost one-third of cases, no motive is ever determined. Ninety percent of the victims are male and 95 percent are non-white. According to Brad Stolbach of Healing Hurt People Chicago, most victims live in poverty-stricken communities and have been immersed in danger-prone environments throughout childhood. However, these generalizations do not apply to every victim, nor do they necessarily determine the circumstances surrounding the shootings. “There’s a lot of time and attention spent on the sensationalism,” says Chicago Survivors founder Joy McCormack. “No one really asks the right question, which is ‘how do we live

in a culture where a 9-year-old can be executed?’ We have to be willing to get past the way we think about these stigmas and realize that it’s everyone’s problem.” In fact, Stolbach says that research shows the way we think about victims and victims’ communities is one of the reasons the problem continues to grow. “A lot of the violence is related to a sense of hopelessness that many young people have. ... So, we need to collectively say that it’s unacceptable that a large part of our community is living with minimal resources, minimal opportunity and a sense of not having a future, and we need to think about how our resources are being used and use them differently,” he says.
Talk to your kids Dion McGill, education program manager at the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence, says we can’t underestimate how aware children are of the gun violence in their city. “They know it’s happening, so they need to know why,” he says.
Get involved
Kayla Woodman, 10th grade One of the ways McGill says we can combat future gun violence is by engaging the future generation in the conversation. “Kids have the power to spark community and engagement in that community,” he says. “By acknowledging society’s problem, you can let kids know that using a gun to solve a problem is not OK and communicate the effects gun violence can have on their lives.” McGill notes that talking about gun violence is another avenue to discuss the consequences of actions. “I always say, ‘You can always apologize for your actions unless you use a gun,’” McGill says about his student education program.

Laughter for littles
W
e live in the Second City, but it definitely ranks first when it comes to hilarious improv comedy. And as a result, there are lots of spots where your mini Melissa McCarthys can watch the masters at work—and even contribute some of their innate improv skills. Comedy After all, is there Sportz anyone who’s better at coming up with an elaborate scenario than a kid who’s been caught misbehaving? u Those “yes ands” can start early, thanks to Pigpen storytime, geared at kids 6 months-3 years. The interactive, musical experience takes place every
Thursday at 10 a.m. Best of all, it’s free (and there’s free coffee!). For older kids 3-12, there’s the original Hogwash: An Improvised Tall Tale at 10:30 a.m. on Saturdays, which lets kids direct the story. They do everything from creating the backdrops to choosing the costumes, so if you have a more behind-thescenes type of kid, it will still be good fun. $10 kids, free adults. Bughouse Theater, 1910 W. Irving Park, Chicago. hogwashkids.com. u Athletics aren’t the only area where things can get a little competitive; getting big laughs is a little cutthroat at ComedySportz, the longest running short-form improv show in
Pigpen Chicago. The interactive show lets the audience drive the action with the Applause-o-meter, but the creative games are sure to lead to immeasurable laughter. ComedySportz alumni include actors, writers and even the woman behind “Pitch Perfect,” so you know it will be a high-quality show. 8 p.m. Thursdays-Fridays; 6, 8 and 10 p.m. Saturdays. CSz Theater Chicago, 929 W. Belmont Ave., Chicago. (773) 549-8080, cszchicago.com. u For kids whose imaginations have been known to get the best
of them, Storytown is a great fit. The weekly shows invite the audience of kids 3-10 to choose the setting and then help create it. Miniature musicians will enjoy the live, improvised soundtrack and original songs popping up throughout the action. And parents will love watching their kids see a brand-new story come to life (and enjoy a few laughs). $10. 10:30 a.m. Saturdays. Stage 773, 1225 W. Belmont Ave., Chicago. WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS
Kids are doin’ it for themselves
I
f you ever feel like your life is just one big #PinterestFail, you definitely should stop by the Chicago Northside Mini Maker Faire this month. Where else could you walk a robotic spider, blow monster-sized bubbles, build a working circuit or ride around in a cupcake car fit for a king? The free fair, now in its sixth year, is a celebration of the do-it-yourself spirit, bringing together educators and makers from all walks of life, whether they’re professional scientists or run-of-the-mill tinkerers. This year’s makers include well-known names like the Chicago Children’s Museum, the Chicago Public Library, FIRST Robotics and Schurz Food Sciences Program, plus local makerspaces, farmers, beekeepers, artists, scientists and engineers. They all bring the type of independent, hands-on activities that kids go crazy for (is there anything kids say more than “I can do it myself”?).
And while your kids are having the time of their lives building and soldering and catapulting, moms and dads can know that their mini makers are also learning some important STEAM skills that just might help them do their homework all by themselves. After all, it’s a DIY world, and we’re just living in it. Elizabeth Diffin

At Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago our mission is simple: deliver world-class care to children who need it most – whether their families can afford it or not. For 90 years we’ve specialized in helping children affected by orthopaedic conditions, cleft lip and palate, spinal cord injury, and rehabilitation needs. And while expertise, dedication and generosity make it all possible, we believe our hospital is fueled by love. That love is what helped the Shriners network of 22 locations treat over 127,000 children last year alone, helping them at every step as they made the journey from patients back to kids.
