he U.S. Department of Education’s National Education Technology Plan calls on educators to make sure students get transformational learning experiences enabled by technology. In the Chicago area, private schools are leading the way when it comes to mindfully using technology in the classroom. “In order for our students to thrive and succeed, it is essential for them to acquire the education and 21st century Special Advertising Supplement

skills needed to prepare them for our rapidly changing world,” says Christine Huzenis, principal of Northside Catholic Academy in Chicago. Its technology curriculum begins in kindergarten with an introduction to coding and by middle school, students participate in projects using 3 D printers, a laser engraver and drone technology. At the Science & Arts Academy in Des Plaines, all students participate in an “Explore and Create” class, which incorporates technology with science, engineering, art and math.
TECHNOLOGY IS NOT LIMITED TO SCIENCE CLASS Technology is often closely associated with science, but schools are now incorporating it into all subject areas. For example, in the upper grades, students at the Chicago Waldorf School use technology to write blogs and design newsletters in their English and Humanities course work. They also use tablets and design software in digital arts class as well as in their robotics and continued on page 8 MAKING THE GRADE 2018 7

computer science classes. “Besides merely providing a technical education, the program explores deeper questions concerning the nature of computer versus human intelligence,” says faculty member John Trevillion. “Technology is a valuable tool across all disciplines,” says Travis Munson, art teacher at Science & Arts Academy. One example is a drama class in which students write, direct and edit their own black and white silent film. “Digital editing allows students to reflect on their performance and make changes along the way,” he says. Northside Catholic Academy also “integrates technology across the curriculum,” says technology teacher Cathy Love, who notes that the school’s STEAM philosophy has broad application and helps create a “robust” educational experience. USING TECH TO HELP KIDS SUCCEED Science & Arts Academy also uses technology to differentiate lessons in reading as well as math. Students also can use technology, such as making a video, to demonstrate mastery of a topic. Movies using green screen technology are popular at Northside Catholic Academy, and PowerPoint presentations are used to show learning. They also use technology in its executive function program to help kids develop skills crucial to success in any class. “Through the use of online curricular resources, technology helps students take ownership of
their learning. For example, middle school students utilize a homework planning app to assist with student organization and time management,” explains Julie Lettner, director of educational technology at Science & Arts Academy. TECH TIME DOES NOT HAVE TO MEAN SCREEN TIME Learning about technology does not necessarily mean putting kids in front of computers. The Chicago Waldorf School discourages early exposure to screens and the use of smart phones before high school. “The school strives to create a healthy pathway into the world of digital citizenship and technology,” Trevillion says. “Students learn to use simple technologies in their elementary school years and do not have screens in the classroom,” Trevillion says. That is because “students first understand how technology works before incorporating it into a classroom environment.” He says that digital technologies are introduced starting in middle school, which provides a foundation for full immersion in computer science in high school. At Northside Catholic Academy, “our technology curriculum does not revolve solely around screen time,” Love explains. Students also learn about simple technologies and through hands-on activities such as creating marble roller coasters. KEEPING KIDS SAFE AND TEACHING DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP All three schools take steps to partner with parents to keep kids safe online and to educate both students and parents about best practices Special Advertising Supplement

when it comes to using the Internet as a family. “Internet safety is a key part of our curriculum and parents play an important role in helping us implement a safe learning environment,” Love says. Lettner agrees, noting that “to maximize the benefits of technology, it must be used in partnership by the parents, teachers and students.” The relationship between technology and healthy human development is a topic of teacher parent evenings and workshops at Chicago Waldorf School, where digital citizenship is an important topic for all. Parents looking to supplement and expand their children’s exposure to technology can also consider avenues outside of school such as Codeverse. Codeverse is an immersive coding studio where kids ages 6 to 12 can program drones, robots, 3 D printers and lasers. Its KidScript programming language “enables untethered creativity,” says Katy Lynch, co founder.

Avery Coonley School Fourth-grade math and science teacher What inspires you every day?: The children! After more than 30 years of teaching, I still look forward to each day with the kids. Describe two things you have done to make a difference for students: The best way to inspire kids is to make learning meaningful. My river study is a favorite unit: the students learn about the human impact on the watershed in which they live and become real scientists. Another favorite is an architecture unit: the students plan an educational
challenges in the classroom. Your favorite accomplishment: Shifting the mindset from thinking of math as just another subject that they learn about to thinking of themselves as accomplished mathematicians who find solutions. What do you hope your students say about you: In math class, we laughed a lot, made numerous mistakes, and learned a lot. Most importantly, we were treated with kindness and dignity. Best advice/tip for parents to help kids succeed: Steer the focus towards understanding the relationship between effort, tenacity and outcome and reduce the emphasis solely on letter grades. pavilion on one aspect of the Wild West, which includes writing, research, math, social studies and science. Your favorite accomplishment: Winning the second highest teaching award from the State Board of Education, unusual for a private school teacher. What do you hope your students say about you? She’s not easy, but she makes learning fun. Best advice/ tip for parents to help kids succeed: Perfectionism is not the goal. Let your child make mistakes, so they can learn to succeed. My classroom motto is Einstein’s quote, “If you have never made a mistake, you have never tried anything new.” Special Advertising Supplement

How schools use personalized learning to ensure all students succeed By Shannan Younger
E
very parent knows their child is unique, with strengths and challenges different from everyone else. Educators also know one size does not fit all when it comes to learning in the classroom. That’s why more Chicago area schools are embracing a personalized learning approach to provide every student with the very best possible educational experience. “We talk a lot about how children’s development is unique and looks different. Our goal is to understand the children — where they are in all areas and where their curiosities and their academic superpowers are and then foster those areas,” explains Carly Andrews, head of school at Baker Demonstration School in Wilmette, which serves students in grades K 8. TEACHER STUDENT CONNECTION The teacher student connection is essential to personalized learning because teachers really need to know 12 MAKING THE GRADE 2018
MTG2018.indd 12
and understand their students. “It’s almost a scientific art of understanding a child as they play on the playground, engage with classmates and handle conflict. We can use what we learn from nonjudgmental observations to help each student move forward,” Andrews says. St. Benedict Preparatory School in Chicago, which serves grades K 12, uses small classes, with no more than 21 students in a classroom, to ensure teachers know their students well. The use of small group and flexible level instruction based on student need and achievement facilitates personalized learning, Head of School Rachel Gemo says. At Fusion Academy Lincoln Park, which serves students in grades 6 12, the “school is built around the idea that personalized learning makes a huge difference for students,” Head of School Christian Kang says. They offer one to one classrooms for all subjects, meaning there is one teacher and one student per classroom. Kang says
that unique approach is “a great way to accommodate the different ways students learn.” Each teacher really understanding how to best reach each student is an essential part of a powerful learning experience, Kang says. When it is just a student and teacher, Kang says students who were not confident in a subject or reluctant to raise their hand in class have an opportunity to “actually learn content in a way that makes sense to them” with a teacher who knows what that way is. PARENT TEACHER PARTNERSHIP In addition to teachers connecting with students, St. Benedict uses “a ‘team mentality’ of families, teachers, administrators and inclusion facilitators working together to find the best ways to reach each child,” Gemo says. Parents play an especially important role on that team. “We believe that parents are the primary educators of their children and their partnership with our teachers gives us important Special Advertising Supplement

insights into each child’s interests and challenges,” she says. Andrews agrees, noting that “the parent teacher partnership makes all the difference in the wellbeing and growth of the child.” LEVERAGING A CHILD’S INTERESTS A personalized learning approach allows teachers to capitalize on student’s interests and use them as springboards for success in all subjects. For example, Andrews says that if a student is a reluctant reader with a great ability to design model trains, a teacher can use that love of trains to hook them on reading. Kang says that if a student has a deep interest in a particular area, “they can investigate and cultivate deeper learning.” Schools also use electives to deepen student learning based on existing interests. Fusion, for instance, offers a wide range of electives as well as art and music programs that encourage students to create. At St. Benedict, robotics and science inquiry are offered students who want more science while students with talents in the fine arts and
performing arts can opt to take electives in these areas to go deeper into their learning. TECHNOLOGY Technology is another way schools are personalizing learning. At Akiba-Schechter Jewish Day School, Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School, Chicago Jewish Day School and Solomon Schechter Day School in Northbrook, critical thinking and creativity are encouraged, with Jewish teachings to reinforce the lessons, says Traci Stratford, program manager and reform day school advocate at Prizmah: Center for Jewish Day Schools. “Jewish day schools educate the whole child. It’s not just about the test scores and it’s not just about the grades — our day schools have fantastic test scores, superior grades and our students go on to top notch high schools and universities. Equally as important is that we are creating really wonderful people.” Technology and innovation play a huge role. Akiba Schechter, for instance, offers a full research and design lab. At Chicago Jewish Day
CHICAGO’S BEST
PREP SECRET
School, coding and virtual reality are big pieces of the curriculum, while Solomon Schechter has an innovation studio and Bernard Zell offers a dedicated space for exploration, she says. “… The (Jewish day) schools in Chicago are really leading the way in some of this 21st century thinking,” she says. St. Benedict is moving to a one to one laptop. Gemo says faculty use technology to help students practice concepts and skills at the individual level. Students also use technology to keep a reflective portfolio of goals, growth and learning experiences throughout the year. Students at Baker also use e portfolios, which Andrews says encourages students to reflect on their work and their goals. That knowledge enables them to self advocate, which the school strongly encourages. At the end of the school day, personalized learning is about meeting students where they are at. “One of our core principles is that we see, respond and understand each child as an individual,” Andrews says.

Alphonsus Academy & Center for the Arts Seventh- and eighth-grade math teacher, Upper Middle School Team Leader What inspires you every day?: Obviously the kids! As a middle school teacher, you get a front row seat to a lot of milestones. They are becoming more aware of how they learn and who they are as people. Math oftentimes has a bad stigma for students (and parents!), but changing those opinions and watching students build confidence in math every day is rewarding. Describe two things you have done to make a difference for students: Our Upper Middle School team really tries to make an effort to get to know the students outside of the classroom. We try to attend student sporting events to cheer them on. They see that you care and that connection always helps to build trust and goes a long way getting high effort with kids in the classroom. Another thing we do in class is talking about our errors or mistakes and what we learned about them. It helps students to see that
it is more about the process than just the answer, and it also helps them see that many students are making errors, some the same as them and that it is OK to make mistakes and talk about them, just as long as you are learning from them. I think math is social and problem solving is better when we do it together. Your favorite accomplishment: Graduating our first double class of eighth graders in 2016. When I first began teaching at AACA 10 years ago, we had three teachers in middle school with 23 students in sixth eighth grade and only four graduating eighth graders. I work with a great team that tries to give students every opportunity to succeed. I am really proud of the middle school program we have built together. What do you hope your students say about you?: I hope they say I help make math more digestible and fun to learn, and that they trust me and can approach me if they need help or advice. Best advice/tip for parents to help kids succeed: Your kids are capable of more on their own than you think!

How to pick the perfect school for your family Good questions to ask during your school search

hether you’re looking for the perfect preschool or a rigorous academic program for your high schooler, choosing the right school can be a daunting experience. Sometimes it’s hard to know what questions to ask: Even if a school looks great on paper, it still might not be the right “fit” for your child. Chicagoland educational experts say that fit and feel are just as important as class offerings and student teacher ratios. Cortney Stark Cope, director of admissions for Chicago Jewish Day School, says you know that accredited 16 MAKING THE GRADE 2018
MTG2018.indd 16
private schools are going to provide a sound education for your child, so it’s important to look beyond that. “The biggest thing really is finding the right fit,” she says. “You might hear what your friends are doing and where their children are going, but the school really needs to feel right for you and your child.” She suggests visiting several schools during the day to observe the teachers in the classrooms and talk to as many people as possible. “The most important question you should ask is, ‘How are you going to meet my child’s unique needs?’ Each child has a unique combination
of strengths and challenges to work through. A good school with good teachers will take the needs of each individual and individualize their learning,” she says. Parents also should ask questions that apply to their child’s specific needs, says Amanda Davey, director of enrollment management for Quest Academy in Palatine. “Parents should ask questions such as, ‘I have discovered that my child learns best in a classroom with hands on exploration instead of a teacher at the front of the room dictating the approach. What’s your school’s classroom learning environment?’” she says. “Or, ‘My child has had trouble making meaningful Special Advertising Supplement
12/9/17 1:42 PM
friendships. How does your school support the social emotional needs of the individual child?’” Holly Scholz, executive director at Prairieland Montessori in Chicago, says observing student teacher interactions is something that you should focus on even at the preschool level. She suggests being cautious of schools where teachers are constantly interrupting students to correct them or talking loudly across the classroom. Parent should ask whether the classroom is teacher led or child focused, and whether students can work at their own pace or if they must follow a schedule, and whether they are required to participate in group work or whether they can work independently if they choose. “Building a trusting, respectful, caring relationship between the children and the adults is the foundation of a quality early childhood program,” Scholz says. “Parents (should) observe how the teachers talk and interact with the children. Are they gently guiding the children to problem solve daily challenges and modeling social
PHOTO behavior?” COURTESY OF QUEST It is also important ACADEMY to ask questions about how parents can get involved, as well as how they deal with behavior challenges, Davey says. It’s also a good idea to ask what happens with students after they graduate. “Parents with 3 and 4 year olds are worried about high school, and I get that,” says Stark Cope. “But you don’t need to focus completely at that age about your preschooler getting into high school.” It is OK, however, to ask about outcomes. “How are kids followed once they leave? What feedback does the school have with high schools? How many students get into their first choice high school,” she says.
“You don’t need to ask, ‘Will my child get into Harvard?’ Instead, ask ‘How do I know my child is getting the education they need to succeed?’”

The Cove School Seventh- and eighth-grade teacher for kids with learning disabilities in a self-contained classroom What inspires you every day?: My inspiration definitely comes from my students! Each day they inspire me to do my best, and they motivate me to make learning active and fun. Two things you have done to make a difference for students: I make a difference for my students by connecting with each of them on a personal level each day. I also make my classroom a community. Your favorite accomplishment: One of my students asked me if there were other Cove Schools in the U.S. I told him ours was the only one. He said, “I want every child with a learning disability to have a
school like Cove School. What do you hope your students say about you? I hope my students say I am

They also saw Owen’s initiative and giving spirit as evidence that their efforts to teach students kindness and compassion were 20 MAKING THE GRADE 2018

successful. Top Chicago private schools are not only encouraging students, they are making kindness part of the curriculum. Children all around Chicagoland are taking steps to be kind to others. With support and encouragement from the faculty, kids are finding ways to be kind in their schools, their communities and around the world. KINDNESS IN THE CLASSROOM “It is easy to be kind when people have been kind to you,” says Anne Byrne, counselor at St. Clement School in Chicago. She says that the faculty
and staff at St. Clement show respect and kindness to their students with the knowledge that children model the behavior they see. They also set the expectation that students will treat each other and the staff with kindness and respect. That same modeling also takes place at North Shore Country Day School between co head teachers Anya Leist and Cristy Athas. We are specific about how we model kindness and we are purposeful in our use of language. We point out explicitly when we see acts of kindness from each other and around Special Advertising Supplement

our classroom,” says Leist. Both schools use the Responsive Classroom approach to teaching that focuses on the link between academic learning and social emotional learning. One element is a positive community, which includes promoting acts of kindness. “That’s the more formal curricular way we integrate kindness into our classroom,” says Anya Leist, co head teacher at North Shore Country Day. More informal ways include creating a recipe for friendship that includes key ingredients of generosity, helpfulness, respectfulness and a dash of sportsmanship. The educators agree that behaviors such as holding a door, using encouraging words, speaking with a kind voice and helping classmates may be small, but make they make a huge difference in the
classroom environment. KINDNESS IN THE COMMUNITY Beyond the classroom, students are making a difference around Chicago and working to support many local causes. At St. Clement, teachers and staff stress the importance of the meaning behind the actions. “We really stress making a connection, rather than just doing a project to say we did it,” Byrne says. “We want our students to act with empathy and concern, and that’s the foundation of kindness.” Once a month, St. Clement students can pay a dollar to wear something other than a uniform to school. The money is donated to a charity selected by a different class each month, and they make a connection with the charity when delivering the check. “It’s one thing to bring in a
dollar, but what really matters is having students make the connection of where it is going and the good it is doing,” Byrne says. At Grace Lutheran, a graduate who had ALS died over the summer. His mother works at the school, so students donated a portion of their walkathon proceeds to making sunshine baskets for ALS patients and their caregivers. KINDNESS IN THE WORLD “Helping others is a real culture within our community. That is what we are called to do, and we find lots of different ways to do it,” says Koehne. That means helping students look beyond their immediate community and seeing the needs of the larger world, just as Owen did. Students at all the schools were moved to take action to help those impacted by the
devastating hurricanes last fall. “We talked with our students about how they could make a difference and help others,” Athas says. Soon, a hurricane relief drive was under way, with the kids realizing they can make a positive impact even thousands of miles away. Similar efforts also took place at St. Clement and Grace Lutheran, and both schools see doing good works as part of their faith based educational mission. The hope is that kind students grow up to be kind adults who know they have the power to make a difference in the world. “The goal is not just to do one act of kindness but to have students learn that they gain satisfaction and willingness to help others,” Koehne says.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS INKA KIRCHENBUECHLER
German International School Chicago Math and science grades 3-7, head of the Science and Math Department What inspires you every day?: Seeing the world through the eyes of children. Describe two things you have done to make a difference for students: I enriched our math curriculum with a more concept based approach with a focus on “mathematics talk.” Once a week, our students sit in a circle and reflect about what they have learned/ accomplished during the week in math, what they liked and where they struggled. In addition, I arranged to get a different kind of math book for the elementary
school that promotes highly differentiated teaching and individualized learning. The students and teachers love the books! Your favorite accomplishment: All of my students like math this year! What do you hope your students say about you?: Frau Kirchenbuechler’s lessons are interesting and fun and she explains well. Best advice/tip for parents to help kids succeed: Learning about math concepts takes place at all ages. Even tiny things in early age — such as sorting Legos by color or size — are indeed math already and should be encouraged by parents. Most importantly, never overwhelm your child and give him/her time to discover concepts, instead of just memorizing and repeating strategies.

Eight easy, unexpected things parents can do at home to help their kids succeed at school By Carrie Rodovich
W
hether it’s hiring a tutor or reading at home for at least 20 minutes a day, parents are always willing to go the extra mile to help their kids succeed in school. But in addition to the obvious things parents already do to help, there are other easy things parents can do at home to help them get ahead at school.
1
PLAY GAMES TOGETHER “Playing games with your kids is a great way to connect after a long day at work and school,” says Jennifer Kelly, executive director of Metropolitan 24 MAKING THE GRADE 2018
MTG2018.indd 24
Schoolhouse in Chicago. “It also reinforces important social skills such as taking turns, following directions and sportsmanship.” HIGHS AND LOWS OF 2 SHARE THE DAY
“How many times do we ask our kids how their day was and their response is ‘good’?” Kelly says. “Taking a couple minutes out of your evening to share the highs and lows of your day is a great way to start a conversation about your child’s day and let them know about yours, too. This also serves as a key moment to praise, set goals and problem solve with your child.”
TOGETHER 3 EAT“NoDINNER matter what time you sit
down or how much your child eats, eat dinner together as a whole family,” says Laura Mraz, owner and CEO of Eyas Landing and Blue Bird Day School, both in Chicago. “Think of dinner as a time to socialize and connect with your family, rather than the time to ensure that they are eating all their food groups.” LISTS 4 MAKE “Involving your child in making
household lists supports critical executive function skills,” Kelly says. “Ask your child to help make a grocery list, a chore list or a to do list for an Special Advertising Supplement

upcoming event. This will not only help set up a foundation for independence, but also encourage your child to share in household responsibilities.” INCORPORATE 5 LEARNING INTO EVERYDAY ACTIVITIES For younger kids, this might mean going on a shape hunt or using everyday items to create patterns and sorting opportunities, says Lynne Lightbody, reading specialist for Immaculate Conception Grade School in Elmhurst. For middle schoolers, that might mean discussing geometry while looking at architecture or letting them help you balance your checkbook. “We work closely with our parents to encourage the desire to learn new things within their children,” she continued on page 26

says. “Encourage your child to further explore topics in which they are interested. Point your (middle school) children towards adults who may professionally be tied to their areas of interest.” LET THEM HELP WITH 6 FOOD PREP
“Take a piece of the Montessori (philosophy) home with you by incorporating your child’s innate desire to help into your family’s meal preparation,” says Austyn Brickler, head of school for Guidepost Montessori in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood. “One of the core elements of the Montessori curriculum for young children involves activities which we refer to as ‘practical life works.’ These activities are designed to allow the child to take ownership of himself and practice elements of self care.”
TOGETHER 7 EXERCISE “There is nothing like
a long walk along the lake or sprints in the park, whether with a toddler or a teen, to improve the mood of the entire family. Active families are happy families,” Mraz says. “Research in the field of child development suggests that children learn best when they are able to use their whole brain and body to acquire new skills,” Mraz says. “We are telling our kids that we believe in self care, whole body learning and preparing their bodies to fully access new learning opportunities at school.” CHOOSE YOUR 8 BATTLES
“I often tell parents to let go of power struggles when they are unnecessary and to choose the best times to teach valuable lessons,” Mraz says. “If your child is hungry or not feeling well, ease up on some — but not all — of your expectations.” Special Advertising Supplement

Do you love your school? In Catholic schools, we do a great job teaching things like reading, writing, science, and math. But we also spend our time educating the whole child in mind, heart and spirit. Our schools are caring communities where children get one-on-one attention and a strong sense of right and wrong. We provide many things that other schools don’t or can’t. We invite you to take some time and visit some of our schools to see what we believe is important. We believe it’s about finding a school filled with quality faculty who bring a commitment to academic excellence, an atmosphere that ignites a love of learning and a community that is welcoming and supportive.
