EDITOR’S NOTE SPONSORED
Jewels of winter In winter, when you walk in the woods, most of what you see is gray or brown. But sometimes you get a glimpse of green, sparkling on a log or against the snow. It’s like bright velvet, soft and plush: moss, the jewel of the winter woods. A clump of moss is made up of thousands of tiny plants. They have no roots, stems, or branches. All that holds them up is water. They’re like microscopic water balloons, just a fraction of an inch high. Cold doesn’t bother them as long as there is liquid water to plump them up. If it gets freezing cold and water turns to ice, the plants just deflate and wait for the cold spell to pass. With no roots to speak of, mosses can live on surfaces such as rock or tree bark (where they do the tree no harm). They also can live on moist sand or on packed-down soil too hard for roots. When they die and decay, mosses enrich the soil for the roots of other plants. As you walk on a winter day, look for mosses on the damp side of trees. Keep an eye out for flashes of green, and know that tiny plants are busy while the big trees sleep.
Happy shopping My three kids got together last month and hatched a plan to convince me and their dad that they don’t want or need presents for Christmas. Instead they want to travel to someplace warm and exotic. So my task this month is to find a place that fits our limited budget and doesn’t require passports. I also would TAMARA L. O’SHAUGHNESSY like it to be screenfree while giving us a chance to help others and learn something new. A tall order, I know. For families going the traditional route, though, this issue is always a must-read because of Senior Editor Elizabeth Diffin’s amazing gift guide. She sets out every fall to visit local, independent toy stores to find the best of the best toys for babies to teens, all under $50. Many years, she’s ahead of the national trends on the hot toys because she and the toy shop owners really know their stuff. I always use this guide for all the kids on my list, as well as the Angel Tree kids we adopt. The gifts never fail to bring the huge smiles. There is too much rush, rush, rush this time of year to just get the holiday shopping done. I’m so guilty of this. While we might love
Amazon and big box stores for the convenience and prices, there’s something still truly wonderful about slowing down a bit and finding a shop owner who cares enough to spend the time learning about your kids’ interests and wish lists in order to help you find just the right gift. Happy November.

uickly becoming a can’t-miss Chicago tradition, Illumination: Tree Lights at The Morton Arboretum returns for its fifth year with a one-of-a-kind lights wonderland. More than 50 acres and a mile-long paved path of majestic trees will glow, dance and light up the night. New this year are interactive wearable pendants that light up in sync with the event, plus the arboretum created timed-entry tickets to ease congestion. This is truly a light spectacle like nothing you’ve ever seen—Sue Wagner, the arboretum’s vice president of education and information, describes it as “something truly magical”—with lights dancing to music by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, trees responding to hugs and mesmerizing scene projections. With warm beverages and snacks available in three tents and warming areas along the Illumination trail, this is one light show that needs to be on your family’s to-do list. GET OUT OF TOWN
How to get wild in Yosemite without the crowds
Y
BY ANDREA GUTHMANN
osemite is one of the most beautiful places in America, if not the planet. I’d long dreamed of visiting North America’s tallest waterfall and the towering 3,000-foot El Capitan, breathtaking scenery immortalized by Ansel Adams photography. Unfortunately, Yosemite’s huge summer crowds often took my breath away as well. At times it felt more like an amusement park than a national park. Here are my tips on how to enjoy the wild beauty of Yosemite without throngs of people.
Tip #1: Arrive early in the day By 9:30 a.m. the parking lots in Yosemite Valley are already full. Make sure to arrive before 9 a.m., park your car for the day and ride the free visitor shuttle buses to avoid re-parking. To enjoy a peaceful hike, hit the most popular trails early. I recommend parking at Half Dome Village, walking to the kid-friendly nature center, then taking the Mist Trail up to Vernal
Falls and Nevada Falls. If you visit in the spring, when waterfalls are at their peak, you likely won’t make it all the way to the end of the trail, as steps become wet and too slippery even for adults, and definitely not appropriate for small children. But the rest of the hike is perfect for the whole family and not to be missed.
Tip #2: Go off the beaten path Ninety percent of visitors never see anything beyond Yosemite Valley. To beat the crowds, take some of the roads, or trails, less traveled. The easy Valley Loop trail,
starting from shuttle bus stop 6, is one good option. Merced Grove and Inspiration Point trails are two other good choices. Talk to park rangers for more suggestions.

WHERE HOLIDAY MAGIC BEGINS
Tip #3: Stay outside the park If you’re planning to spend your vacation sleeping under the stars, you won’t be alone. Many of the 5 million people who visited in 2016 had the same idea. As a result, Yosemite’s campgrounds can feel downright crowded. That goes for lodges within the park as well. Both campsites and lodging reservations need to be booked months in advance. A good alternative is to stay just outside the park. Rush Creek Lodge, just 1/2 mile from the Highway 120 west entrance, and Tenaya Lodge, near Yosemite’s south gate, both have large landscaped pool areas and a long list of kidfriendly activities. Rush Creek has board games, ping pong
and free nightly s’mores around a campfire. Surrounded by the Sierra National Forest, Tenaya Lodge offers free outdoor movies, Western-themed dinners with live music, archery and horseback riding. rushcreeklodge.com, tenayalodge. com
Tip #4: Go in the off-season To avoid warm weather crowds, consider visiting in spring, fall and even winter. Places like Tenaya Lodge offer a postcard-perfect setting for Christmas or New Year’s family vacations and the snowcovered mountains can look absolutely magical.
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 10 | 6PM AT DEER PARK TOWN CENTER Count down with Santa as he turns on the holiday lights and enjoy a fireworks show with a finale honoring veterans. Santa will visit with children for photos until 8:30PM.
Tip #5: Visit the wilderness outside Yosemite Nearby Sierra National Forest is less popular, but no less spectacular. Bordering Yosemite to the west, Sierra’s Nelder Grove has giant sequoias and small crowds. Wantt to camp with your kids? Book a campsite here, where you likely won’t have other people or tents nearby. You’ll also find trees that dwarf anything imaginable. Try wrapping your arms around the Bull Buck Tree, 100 feet in circumference and 246 feet tall. Watching my teenage son play king of the mountain on the massive stump left behind from a logged sequoia filled me with awe as well as a bit of sorrow.
SANTA’S ARRIVAL & FIREWORKS
The Barrington VFW Post 7706 will lead Santa’s arrival and fireworks begin shortly after 6PM. Visit ShopDeerParkTownCenter.com for details. Like much of our trip, seeing the visible stumps of sequoias thousands of years old provided the kind of “teachable moment” parents all hope for on a family vacation. No need to get on my bully pulpit about conservation. This was a lesson in old growth forests and environmentalism far better than what you’d find in a classroom.

INSIDE VOICE
What we’re thankful for this season ‘Arnie the Doughnut’
It’s practically mandatory to list the things for which you’re grateful during November. Arts-wise, we could use a longer notepad for everything that fills us up with thanks, but we’ll settle KEELY FLYNN for highlighting the stellar events that embody everything great about the season; among them, making (and shaking to) a joyful noise, indulging in decadent treats and honoring our heritage. Just pace yourself, OK? The season is— thankfully—long enough to squeeze in every last bit of fun.
Bomba Dance Party For those times when only a fierce dance party will stomp away the seasonal madness, the good folks at Old Town School of Folk Music have just the ticket; their Friday night Global Dance Party series offers up a dance class followed by two hours of music from live bands or DJs in the Myron R. Szold Music & Dance Hall. Nov. 17’s evening is a Bomba Dance Party featuring La Escuelita Bombera de Corazón, with AfroBoricua star Ivelisse Díaz. The lead singer of Buya, Díaz helms the celebration—and technique—of dancing to Bomba, Puerto Rico’s oldest music style. This is the best way to stave off holiday pounds yet. Old Town School of Folk Music, 4544 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago; oldtownschool.org
Based on the popular children’s book and series by Laurie Keller, ‘Arnie’ follows the charming path of a chocolate frosted, rainbow-sprinkled doughnut named Arnie and his new owner Mr. Bing, the guy who gets the surprise of his life (and a pal for the ages) when he buys what he believes will be a simple snack. Lifeline Theatre’s KidSeries’ newest—and sweetest—tale champions the idea that friends can come from the most surprising of places and that common ground is easier to find than you’d think. (Hold on to that one around the ol’ Thanksgiving turkey, perhaps?) Runs through Nov. 26; Lifeline Theatre, 6912 N. Glenwood Ave., Chicago; lifelinetheatre. com
‘Making Memories: Quilts as Souvenirs’ There’s no better time of year for waxing ng poetic about family traditions, and the Artt Institute’s latest gallery of textile greatness ss is a fantastic way to get the conversation started about the whos, whens and whys of what we all bring to the table—both literally and metaphorically. ‘Making Memories: Quilts as Souvenirs’ showcases 29 stunning works crafted between 1840 to 2001, and hail from America, Mexico, Ireland and England. nd. The images depicted are the truest measure off what took h each h artisan i k away as the most important souvenir of their family and culture. What would make it on to your quilt? FAILING WITH GUSTO
The cult of parenthood
Perhaps it was the basest of all human MARIANNE emotions. I wanted WALSH to check out the trainwreck. Maybe gather some gossip on John Travolta and Tom Cruise along the way. Weren’t space aliens involved? Ten hours of binge-watching later, I gained a different perspective. Listening to the tragic trajectory of people sacrificing savings, belief systems and families for something “more,” I was overcome with déjà vu. It hit me. Scientology is a lot like the cult of parenthood. It starts out innocently enough. You are a parent! You are part of this fabulous club where everyone is BFFs and eager to share diaper coupons! The world is exploding with possibility, much like the volcanic cover of Dianetics. Slowly, things change. You’re presented with the ladder to childhood success. What? You never signed your kid up for T-ball? Music lessons need to start before age 4. You bought that Irish dance costume used? What in the name of Xenu is going on here? More time passes and you find yourself mortgaging the house for travel teams, private coaches and boozy tournaments all in an effort to move up that ridiculous ladder. Not that I’m opposed to the boozy tournament part. You barely see your friends
and family. You start sounding insane when discussing your 9-year-old’s hockey “career.” Anyone who isn’t equally focused on their kid’s development ent is considered an outsider der and obviously “suppressive.” sive.” Leah Remini delivered ivered a wake-up call. Although ough my kids revel in a wide de variety of activities, theyy didn’t need to be their very best all the time. e. It was fine to phone itt in now and then. Skip p the ladder. Take th the he escalator. Save ve your tired feet eet to fight another otheer day. With a renew renewed wed focus on reducing the intensity ensity of our lives, I registered my kids for the inaugural season of a local Chicago Park District hockey program. It was a less intense program than what we’d done previously. My middle son threw himself on the ground in protest: “I cannot be a HORNED FROG!!!” Too bad, kid. Now practice your ribbits. Due to the massive savings, all three could play fall hockey. I was OK knowing two of them would struggle. They were thrilled for the opportunity nonetheless. Danny reminds me of a steam engine, but definitely up for the challenge. Jack is slowly finding
ways to be supportive toward teammates just starting out. It’s not his nature to be patient, but he’s giving it his all. And Joey remains a maniacal drunken giraffe on skates, improving ever so slightly, but smiling up at the stands when he does. I am relieved my kids aren’t playing AAA Hockey and I defer to others to pursue becoming a prince. For now, it’s good to be a frog. Marianne Walsh is a Chicago mom of three boys. Want more? Go to ChicagoParent.com and webandofmothers.blogspot.com.
Life in Chi
I do not watch much television, stubbornly retiring my remote after “Breaking Bad.” The pinnacle of programming had obviously been achieved, so why mess around with crap like “Fuller House”? Still, I found myself inexplicably curious about the A&E series, “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath.” h.”

YOU
Don’t neglect YOU Moms in the midst of holiday shopping, I am officially giving you permission to #treatyoself (Thanks, Parks & Recreation!). During the month of November, I want you to pause and grab a little something for you. I know it may not be in the official budget, which is why I have rounded up four amazing treats for CHERYL LEAHY under $25. Bonus: All of them are created by mompreneurs in the Chicagoland area.
Ear treats I feel naked without earrings. This is why I always keep a pair of simple gold hoops in my car to pop on in case I forget to accessorize before leaving the house. This pair of on-trend ear threaders made by metalsmith Allison Mooney will become your go-to. Allison juggles mixing metal with being the mom of two little ones, and fully understands the desire to wear something unique that makes you feel fabulous. These threaders are available in various geometric shapes and metals for $20. See all of her modern, simple designs at allison mooneydesigns.com.
Finger treats
Tummy treats When I attend a holiday party, I am m so busy filling plates for my little oness that I barely manage an appetizer before fore it is time to jet, much less hit up the dessert table. When I do indulge in a sweet treat, I want to make k sure it is worth it. I discovered Chocolate Twist, a confectionery line of mouthwatering delights created by Kate Coffey, a mom of two in Riverside. My pick? The Saigon Cinnamon Peanut Butter Cup. This 4-inch creation is big enough to share, but don’t you dare! Serving suggestion: Pair with your favorite vino and hide in the storage room to eat it like I do. Order up at chocolate-twist.com.
Who has the time or funds to get a weekly manicure? I buy my own polish and treat myself to a mini mani after the kids g go to bed. If you want a high-quality polish that is nonnon-toxic, affordable and luxurious, JoShik is pick. Created by Kenya native and current your pic Chicago mom JoJo Shiku, this line of nail Chica polish is safe for expecting moms as well pol as children. She created the formula after a long search for the perfect non-toxic polish. p Grab a bottle for $12 at jjoshikpolish.com.
Lip treats Michelle Bucaro often talked with Chicago moms about how i h ffellow ll h they all wanted to look and feel their best. So she set out to create natural beauty products using antioxidants derived from wine’s BFF, grapes. At $8 each, the lip shimmers are an affordable luxury that will brighten your day and keep your lips looking lovely for years to come. Nab a few at lookdevine.com.

VIVA DADDY
This month is an island
October has become an orange and black gauntlet of costume assemblage, candy-grubbing and corn mazes. December was lost decades ago to retail donnybrooks, sloppy MATT BORESI office parties and Paul McCartney’s synthesizer. Luckily there is still one respectable month in the last quarter of the year for parents to enjoy. Sanity: thy name is November. The 11th month of the year is the final stretch of acceptable weather before several months of Chicago winter. It is a month relatively unsullied by holidays, save for solemn recognition of Veterans (Nov. 11) and Pilgrims (Nov. 23). Oh, and there’s All Saints Day (Nov. 1), which I guess celebrates forgotILLUSTRATION BY STEPHEN SCHUDLICH ten ’90s girl groups and All Souls Day (Nov. 2) which, in the 19th century, featured the tradition of “souling,” which is like caroling but the people you visit give you cakes! My family and I have worked up a rendition of “Ain’t Nothin’ Like the Real Thing” just for the occasion which we think is very soulful and deserving of our neighbors’ finest baked goods. Regardless of which holidays you celebrate, November is a stretch when your kids can chill out and your wallet can cool off. Following the sugar highs of Halloween and ahead of the onslaught of peppermint bark, you may wish to spend some quality time with your offspring. My daughter Viva and I will take advantage of it being National Novel Writing Month and join thousands of others in writing truly terrible long-form fiction. It’ll give us a chance to bond, and with the two of us working in tandem, we can probably churn out an entire ansty post-apocalyptic YA series. Don’t like what we wrote? Set the pages on fire on Guy Fawkes Night (Nov. 5)! Between watching football games and having culturally loaded conversations about the relative merits of pumpkin pie versus sweet potato pie, Viva and I will get up to our elbows in turkey stuffing. If we don’t get salmonella in the process, I’m sure we’ll make some memories to carry us through until spring. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we have to find a “souling” bag large enough to hold several cakes. Viva November. Viva Viva. Viva Daddy. Viva is 5 years old. Daddy is about 8x that age. They live happily with Mommy in Chicago.

VOICE: KELLY K. JAMES
Leaving Haley Mom trying not to focus on the what ifs
“B
ut you’re not going to leave her there.” Such was the reaction of several of my friends when they found out I was planning a trip out West to take my 7-year-old daughter to see her biological mom (who we call her “first mom”), two younger siblings, grandparents and six uncles and aunts ranging from ages 4 to 16. We have an open adoption, but we hadn’t seen her first mom for more than three years. “Actually I am,” I said. “That’s the idea—to give her some uninterrupted time with her first family.” One brave soul ventured, “Are you sure that’s a good idea?” Her unstated fear? That Chaleigh, Haley’s first mom, might seek to overturn her adoption decision of more than seven years ago and abscond with her to … I’m not sure where. Parts unknown, I suppose. “Well, Haley is her daughter,” I pointed out. Because she is. I’d planned for this trip for months, setting aside money to buy the expensive tickets. I’d talked my 12-yearold son into coming along with a promise of a roadtrip to Portland to visit one of my closest friends—and that we’d visit Powell’s, the world’s biggest bookstore, among other things. But still. When I drove off after leaving Haley in the company of her first family, all of whom were thrilled to see her (except her youngest uncle, who chomped on her arm after a misunderstanding), I did question my plan. “This is really hard,” I said to Ryan, who’s used to me working things out verbally, regardless of who’s around. “I can’t believe I am driving
off and leaving my daughter behind.” Except. Except that I didn’t conceive my children. I didn’t create them. I didn’t carry them. I didn’t pass along any genes, or any family traits, or any talents hidden among the strains of DNA. And obviously I didn’t give birth to them. I only became a mom after my daughter already had a mom. Her first mom. Her mom’s choice—to place her for adoption with me and my then-husband—meant that now Chaleigh and I were both her moms. That doesn’t mean an open adoption always feels safe. What if eventually Haley “picks” Chaleigh over me? What if she decides at 11, or 14, or 17, that she’s had enough of me and she wants to live with her “real” (that sound is my heart breaking) mom now? What if, what if she just likes her better than me? Those are the thoughts that scare me. Chaleigh’s younger, slimmer, prettier than me. Way more hip, too. She’s got cool tattoos and a killer fashion sense, while I’ve got hot flashes and midlife sandwich generation worries. And I’m
Haley with her first mom, Chaleigh, sister, Naomi, and brother, Edmund.
sometimes crabby, sometimes impatient and not at all the perfect mom I knew I’d be—you know, before I had children. Then again, families don’t come with guarantees. A good friend has chosen to sustain only the barest of relationships with her mom after a traumatic, chaotic childhood. Another has had her younger sister break contact with her for more than a decade—for reasons my friend can’t understand. My own father abandoned my siblings and me for more than six years without even a phone call, then wanted to come back into our lives without even a sorry. So I try not to live in fear. I focus on being the best mom I can be (which is not a perfect one by any means) and make it easy for my kids to know—and love—their
first families. I don’t believe that it takes “blood” to be a family. Yet I understand that Haley’s first family—her mom, her siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles and great-grandparents—love her because of blood. Because she is my daughter but she is also their daughter—and sister, and granddaughter, and niece and great-granddaughter. In having a chance to know her, they also get to love more than her genetic birthright. They get to love her for her energy; her love for dogs and babies; her frequent dance fits; her giggle; her spontaneous kisses and hugs; her essential Haley-ness. So, yes, I left her there. But I came back for her. My hope is that in doing both, she will want to do the same with me.

CRAFT
LEGO face jars
Create your own mini figure face
L
BY MEGAN MURRAY ELSENER ego fans come in a variety of ages, es, and this craft will please all of them. Put those baby food jars to o good ood use at your next party or playdate to create original Lego face jars. Use them to hold crayons, hair ties or other little knick-knacks and they’ll always bring a smile to your face.
Materials: u Glass baby jars u Yellow acrylic paint u Black Sharpie u White oil-based Sharpie (optional) u Paintbrush
Directions: Remove the lid and label from the glass baby food jar. Clean thoroughly and dry. Pour 1-2 Tablespoons of the acrylic paint into the clean baby jar. If the paint is thin enough, put on the cover and shake the jar until the paint evenly coats the entire inside of the jar. You can pour out excess paint. If the paint is thicker, you may need to use a paintbrush to help spread the paint around to all of the inner surfaces. Allow to dry and touch up if needed with a paintbrush. Using a Sharpie and your imagination, create Lego faces on the exterior of the glass jar. Add glasses, eyebrows, beards or eye patches. For added details like teeth or eyes, use a white sharpie over the black. Megan Murray Elsener is a freelance writer, Chicago Parent contributor and mother of three.

want that!”
Can you even count how many times you’ve heard that from your kids? Whether it’s at a quick trip to Target or while out grocery shopping, kids often whine and beg for things without
understanding the cost or trade-offs required. Ron Lieber, author of The Opposite of Spoiled and the New York Times personal finance columnist, says it may sound basic, but parents need to talk to their children about money.
“There is an epidemic of silence around money that persists within many families,” says Lieber. pe “Many people who live paycheck-to-paycheck include their kids in daily money conversations out of necessity. th But far too many parents avoid the topic altogether B when there is enough money for every basic w need, plus most of the sneakers and costumes n and lessons that their children want.” Talking about money with the kids gives them the tools they need as they become adults. But ultimately, says Lieber, every money conversation is actually about values. Lisa Magnuson, an Oak Park mom of a 6- and a 9-year-old, finds ways to talk to her kids about money that make them more mindful about it. “I try to make it about more than money and create an opportunity to talk about ‘value,’ whether it’s the value of your time, valuing the things you’ve worked hard for or valuing hard work itself,” Magnuson says. “I want them to have an appreciation for money and make it more than just transactional.”
Breaking spoiled According to Lieber’s studies, spoiled children have four primary things in common: u They have few chores or responsibilities u There aren’t many rules that govern their behavior or schedule u Parents lavish them with time u They have a lot of material possessions If the idea of openly discussing money is new for your family, Lieber suggests that a good place to start is with allowance. “Money is a teaching tool, the same way books and musical instruments can be. But we need practice to get better,” Lieber says. “An allowance helps kids learn to save and spend money, a skill they don’t get to practice in very many other ways as they grow up.” Lieber suggests having three plastic containers that divide 36 November 2017 ChicagoParent.com

allowance into GIVE, SAVE and SPEND jars. This acts as your child’s first budget. “Splitting the money introduces them to the idea that some money is for spending soon, some we give to people who may need it more than we do and some is to keep for when we need or want something later,” says Lieber. Magnuson has successfully started using tthe give/save/spend jars with her 9-yearold daughter. o “It teaches her right away that not all money is for spending on ourselves,” m Magnuson says. “She uses her own money M tto buy gifts for people and is learning g finding eearly about saving. She has as started rted findi creative ways to earn money watering ney ey by waterin for neighbors or bringing in their mail aand she immediately puts what into at she earns int her save jar as a default.” As kids make spending mistakes, parents takes, paren should use these opportunities nities to talk alk about abo wants and needs while creating eating deeper er conversations about values. s. summer,” Foltz says. “Then we looked at websites to get a sense of what things cost at different stores and figured out how much she would need for the necessities. Then I gave her all the cash at once and told her it was her responsibility how to spend it. She quickly learned the tax on Michigan Avenue wasn’t worth it and how to get everything she needed.”
No getting around it Lieber reminds parents there is no way to shield your kids from money issues. “Even young kids notice that some kids have bigger houses or more toys than others. As they get older, their power of observation gets more Lisa Magnuson and her family sophisticated to labels on clothing, cars we drive and vacation destinahow not talking about it openly can cause tions,” he says. big issues. Pre-feast family fun run There are a lot of turkey trots and fun runs that allow you to feel the burn before you binge on turkey and pie (see page 70). Check out the Turkey Trot 5K in Chicago’s Lincoln Park, which also features the Plymouth Rock Ramble, a race for the tiniest turkeys 2-12. Kids are divided into age groups. Those between ages 2-4 will run 50 yards, kids 5-6 will run a quarter mile and kids 7-12 will run a half mile. If you have kids looking to
log more mileage, the Naperville Noon Lions Turkey Trot 5K has age groups for kids ages 10-14 and for those 9 and under. They also allow running strollers and walkers on the course that begins and ends at Naperville Central High School. If you’re looking to cut down on time in the kitchen, a pancake breakfast in the cafeteria is provided to participants at the end of the race. turkeytrot chicago.com; napervilleturkey trot.com

Get cookin’ Thanksgiving is the perfect occasion to get kids cooking and involved in preparing the family feast. The folks at The Kids’ Table, a cooking school in Chicago that offers classes for kids and families, are expressing their gratitude for friends with Friendsgivingthemed celebrations for toddlers to teens. Recipes might include dishes like Thanksgiving Burgers, Corn Potato Chowder, Root Veggie Mash, Rustic Apple Pie and Pumpkin Whoopie Pies. And since they are vegetarians, all the classes and celebrations
will be turkey friendly! “Getting kids involved in the kitchen gives them ownership over the meal and can transform cooking from a chore to a fun family activity. Cooking and sharing a meal together is a wonderful way to practice giving and gratitude—perfect for the Thanksgiving holiday but also any time of the year,” says Elena Marre, founder of The Kids’ Table. kids-table.com Shannan Younger is a mom of one, Chicago Parent blogger and freelance writer living in Naperville.

H
elping children become both good students and good people is more important than ever. Schools in the Lake Michigan Association of Independent Schools know that character counts and they’re working to develop it in their students in meaningful ways. Schools see kids’ character as an integral part of educating the whole child. “Who our kids become is more important than what anyone becomes,” says Noah S. Hartman, head of school at Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School in Chicago. “Students can have all the intellectual knowledge in the world, but without the foundation of a strong character, it may not be put to the best use.”
Practicing grace and courtesy is an integral part of Montessori education and at Near North Montessori School in Chicago, Head of School Audrey Perrott says they take it a step further with their core values serving as a “wonderful moral compass.”
She stresses that developing kids’ character is good for the classroom, the school community and the world at large, and that students need to understand why. “It is important to not just teach respect and courtesy for the sake of being polite, but to explain there’s a reason why

we need to do this. When it comes to character, students need to understand that their actions have an impact on someone else,” she says. Independent schools work to instill in students the knowledge that they each have unique gifts and talents —-and they need to put them to good use. Service to others is often an important component of character development and teaching kids to give back also means empowering them to use those gifts to make a difference. “What can I do to help?” was a question that all schools encouraged their students both to ask and to answer with action. Students are taking the message to heart, with many schools sharing how students initiated fundraisers to help those impacted by recent

Christine Schmidt, principal at Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest, notes that while many schools have a service program, Woodlands’ approach to service requires students to delve deeper. “It’s not just understanding social injustice. It’s about and seeing the larger world and asking what their role is and how they can make a difference. Our girls work to both understand the root cause of issues and act for change.” She cites the number of alums who go on to jobs with a focus on social justice and service as one indicator that students are internalizing that message. Elgin Academy also encourages students to work towards understanding as a means of developing character. “We want students to leave here being productive, conscientious, mindful people who contribute positively to the world. It’s through conversations and relationships that they develop sensitivity and respect of different points of view,” says Lynn Martin, director of strategic marking and communications at Elgin Academy. There are many benefits to developing kids’ character. Hartman says research points to an increase not only the likelihood of responsible behaviors but also improve-
ment in student engagement and motivation. “We don’t want there to be a disconnect between academic learning and character education. There are ways to do both,” Hartman says. “Developing kids’ character is the right thing to do, first and foremost. But there are also academic benefits that are the icing on the cake.”. Schools also recognize that character development can take place anywhere and “extracurriculars provide an excellent venue in which to develop character traits,” says Carolyn Manley, school counselor at Science & Arts Academy in Des Plaines. She says that even individual sports like cross country take on a team component and that “learning to work as a team, collaborating with others and creating relationships are just a few of the social-emotional skills that can be developed and enhanced by a teacher/advisor/coach who takes the time to maximize the extracurricular experience.” At a recent cross country meet, the school’s team waited to support another school’s runner that was still on the course. The focus on character resulted in what Manley describes as “a wonderful moment of kindness, compassion, and true teamwork.”

hether they are using innovative smartphone apps or teaching kids face-to-face mediation techniques, schools around the Chicagoland area are finding creative ways to help students. At The Gardner School, which serves six weeks old through prekindergarten in multiple locations, parents and teachers communicate through the Precioustatus App, which allows teachers to document a child’s day. “It’s not just for parents to learn the things they need to know, but it’s also a way to know what delighted and inspired their child,” says Joy Haynes, marketing manager for The Gardner School. At Bennett Day School, students and teachers work together to create a digital portfolio that goes beyond a traditional report to create a holistic look at the student’s
academic progress. “It’s a visual depiction of what they’ve accomplished and learned and to track their growth and development over their time in our school,” says Martin Moran, the lead designer and director of the upper school at Bennett Day School. to identify students’ major developmental milestones. As the students age, they work with teachers to decide what to include. Karen Carney, head of school for Chicago Friends School, says the school focuses on a whole school, multiage community that learns and works together. “Collaboration across grade level is important for students in many ways,” Carney says. “It allows our younger students to have helpers and role models about how to be a member of the community. It allows our older students to take on different roles: teacher, coach, co-learner and role model.” Multi-age learning environments have been shown to reduce competition and build

Schools help students succeed in and out of the classroom By CARRIE RODOVICH

cross the Chicagoland area, schools are doing whatever they can to help students succeed inside and outside of the classroom, from teaching life skills to helping them develop empathy for others. Guidepost Montessori, in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood, operates under the philosophy that helping students maximize personality traits such as persistence and the ability to manage emotions is a recipe for success. “The contention is that a lot of the things that make you successful in life are personality traits … that are learned at a very young age,” says Matt Bateman, Guidepost’s director of content. Guidepost, which opened this fall, serves kids 2-6. “We do a lot in our schools to maximize and optimize” those personality traits. At Chicago Grammar School, the curriculum focuses on life-based skills necessary at any age, says Rachael Marra, a history and literature teacher at the school. The school focuses on teaching students to always be asking ‘why’ and being able to place things in context. They also are challenged to find solutions for realworld problems. For example, students were challenged to

“We’re throwing problems at them and encouraging them to try ideas. Some are completely unfeasible, some are really impressive,” she says.
Another vital skill is not being afraid to fail, Marra says. “The idea is that different ideas and different results are celebrated,” she says. “Creativity and trial and error are a part of life.” At German International School Chicago, Director Petra Obritzberger believes student success starts with the atmosphere surrounding them. And her focus is on starting the day and filling students up with positive messages that they then take out into the community to continue to spread, whether through sharing their culture or doing community service projects. “They go out and do something for the larger world and think of things globally,” she says. Sharing with the community and working together with families and neighbors to become good members of society are key messages at the school, no matter how old the student. Obritzberger also says the school believes in celebrating culture and bringing families together; of the 110 students, there are 26 nationalities, leading to an open-minded school community that embraces differences, a message she knows will stick with students long after they leave school walls.

Thanks to the musical brilliance of Lin-Manuel Miranda and the marketing genius of Disney, there’s a good chance your offspring might never stop singing “How Far I’ll Go.” Good news, then, that kids 6-9 can get in touch with their inner Moana at Luau at the Beach, an afternoon of Hawaiian delights that includes making leis, building and sailing warrior boats, and learning to hula. Then wrap it all up by making flame-free paper bag campfires and enjoying a tropical treat while watching a movie. (We have a feeling that darn song isn’t going anywhere any time soon.) $20. 1-4 p.m. Nov. 10. Rosewood Beach Interpretive Center, 883 Sheridan Road, Highland Park. (847) 433-6901, pdhp.org.

Nowadays, preparing for winter basically entails buying new coats for the kiddos and putting snow tires on the minivan. But back in the 1800s, farm families had a whole range of tasks for preparing for Old Man Winter, like smoking hams, making sausages and doing other, mostly pork-related, jobs. At Hog House to Smokehouse, get an up-close look at the lives of farm families in the 19th century, enjoying demos, crafts, wagon rides and food—then return to the luxury and comfort of your 21st-century existence (pre-packaged bacon included). $3 person, $12 family. urkey and pumpkin pie are pretty much a given, plus football on the TV and maybe a chance to say whatt you’re thankful for. But Thanksgiving is increasingly becoming a day for running. In fact, it’s the most popular day of the year to run a race— probably because of the high calorie count that comes with the afternoon’s feast. If you’ree in the market for a Turkeyy Trot to call your family’s own, Chicago has a full cornucopia opia of options. Edison Park Turkey Trot. This 5K run, on the north side of Chicago, has been gobbling along for more than 20 years. Maybe that’s because it offers fun for the whole family, thanks to a Gobble Gallop just for kids 3-10. Proceeds from the event benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association, so you can feel good knowing you’re getting your exercise for a cause that’s even bigger than your waistline. $20, $12 Gobble Gallop. 8:30 a.m. Nov. 23. Edison Park Field House, 6755 N. Northwest Hwy., Chicago. epturkeytrot. com. North Shore Turkey Trot. Get a jump on your Thanksgiving dessert at this Highland Park race, which includes a mini apple pie for everyone who crosses
tthe finish line. The rrace comes in 5K aand 10K distances, both traversing the bo beautiful fall foliage bea of the North Shore. And this is a true all-ages race, so feel free to bring your out-of-town relatives for a family bonding experience. $49 5K; $59 10K. 7:30 a.m. Nov. 23. Park Avenue and St. Johns, Highland Park. northshoreturkeytrot.com. Glen Ellyn Turkey Trot. Now this is a race fit for Miss Cleo (you’ve been looking for one of those, haven’t you?). The Turkey Trot Predicto Race outlaws all timepieces on the 5-mile route, challenging participants to guess what their finishing time will be. The race is free, but non-perishable food donations go to the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry. And costumes are welcome, so you can be as much of a turkey as you want to be. 8 a.m. Nov. 23. Lake Ellyn Park, 645 Lenox Road, Glen Ellyn. gepark.org. Grant Park Turkey Trot. Not the type to go for a run before chowing down on a holiday feast? This race, in and around
beautiful Grant Park, is pretty much made for you. Taking place the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the 5K run includes a free Kids Dash for ages 8 and under, plus an ooey, gooey cinnamon roll and hot cider (or a beer) for finishers—just in case you haven’t eaten enough in the past week. $50. 8:30 a.m. Nov. 25. Calling all upstanders
W
hat do we do when they’re gone?” That’s a question that’s been asked frequently at the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center; 72 years after the end of World War II, many Holocaust survivors are now passing away. And since encounters with survivors tend to be the most meaningful part of any visit to the museum, staff decided to find a way to preserve that legacy after these unique individuals are gone. That’s where the Take a Stand Center was born. The result of more than three years of work, the center is designed for ages 11 and up. Its centerpiece is the Abe & Ida Cooper Survivor Stories Experience, a chance for visitors to hear from real Holocaust survivors with the help of 3-D holographic technology. Thirteen Holocaust survivors—including seven from the Chicago area—worked with a team of filmmakers at the University of Southern California to record their memories. Interviewers catalogued the thousands of most-asked questions for Holocaust survivors, creating a truly interactive experience that is the

first of its kind in the world. The docent-facilitated experience allows visitors to ask questions—everything from “Do you have any pets?” to the more topical “What was it like in a concentration camp?”—and the survivor to respond in real time. If the question is too offthe-wall, the survivor will redirect the conversation, but Kelley Szany, director of education for the museum, says it doesn’t happen very often. The Survivor Stories Experience is a
free, timed-ticket session, but you won’t have to twiddle your thumbs while you wait. The rest of the Take a Stand Center is equally inspiring and well-conceptualized. The Goodman Upstander Gallery features 40 individuals, called “upstanders,” who have fought against injustice and stood up for worthy causes, from Malala Yousafzai to Chicago’s own Jane Addams. Kids can also learn about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in 1948, and how the struggle for these same human rights continues today. Then in the Take a Stand Lab, visitors can follow in the upstanders’ footsteps, choosing how they can stand up for what’s right, seeing success stories of others who chose that action (including kids from the Chicago area!), and making a pledge of how they will take action themselves. In addition, the Act of Art Gallery highlights art as a form of social action and activism, using the artists’ own words to discuss this important topic. It all works together to address the question of what will happen when not only Holocaust survivors, but all the rest of us, are gone. And with these upstanders on the case, it’s nice to know that the future is in good hands. Elizabeth Diffin

Toys and games and fun, fun, fun
I
f your kids need any help filling out their holiday wish lists (yeah, right…), ChiTAG is here to help. Otherwise known as the Chicago Toy & Game Fair, the two-day event is ground zero for all the coolest toys and games of the season—including some that haven’t even hit store shelves yet. ChiTAG is fully interactive—no “do not touch” signs here!—and lets kids engage with fun products, as well as the men and women who have invented some playtime faves like Roominate, JUKEM and Bop It! The fair also features some special events, such as the Young Inventors Challenge for kids who might have a
million-dollar idea that would change the whole toy and game scene. Or, if The Force is with your littles, you’ll want to attend the Star Wars Luncheon, an out-ofthis-world buffet that includes photo ops with beloved characters. (It will be good prep for when The Last Jedi comes out.) If you need to take a break from all that playing, there’s entertainment like magic shows, bubbles and performances from the always-popular Jesse White Tumblers. And while the scenes usually staged in your family’s playroom might not conjure up images of white doves and linked hands, the theme of this year’s ChiTAG is “Play for Peace.” It includes a large-scale,
