There’s a whole lot to love about Subaru. The spacious interiors. The capability. The Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive that’s standard on most models. Add to that the seven 2015 IIHS Top Safety Picks, and a Subaru is a vehicle you will always be able to depend on. Love. It’s what makes a Subaru, a Subaru.

hat’s old is new again! Many Chicagoarea parks have undergone dramatic renovations in the past year—and we’re not just talking about that shiny new ice ribbon in the heart of downtown. These four great parks bring a fresh look to playtime. And the best news is that they should be ready for full exploration this spring. Cortney Fries

his $60 million park-for-all-seasons embraces the warmer weather with roller skating in the Skating Ribbon. The 40-foot climbing structures in the center of the ribbon will be the city’s first rock climbing park. Both experienced and novice climbers can take hold with instruction and supervision from park staff. If you’ve wondered what those upside down trees are, wander the Alice in Wonderland-inspired Enchanted Forest. Play tea party or discover the Kaleidoscope mirror maze. The three-acre Play Garden is wonderfully whimsical. Even really big kids have been known to holler “this is awesome!” as they embark. The playground can accommodate up to 600 kids. Each section is labeled for age. Most equipment is geared toward ages 5-12. The Sea’s metal play ship is irresistible, with nets and ladders. The Slide Crater is a climbing and sliding bonanza with spiral, wide and rail slides. March along the tower suspension bridge or play tag on the Wave Lawn. Even the swings are unique—some are nests! The Lagoon, featuring three animal figures, and The Harbor, home to wood boats and a boardwalk, are the best options for kids 2-5. Without a doubt, this park honors the former first lady of Chicago’s legacy of helping children.

n April, the new 10,000-square-foot, award-winning playscape at Naper Settlement opens for the warm months. Kids 2-7 will love making a deal at the trading post, playing on the fort-themed structure and exploring Illinois’ natural history with hands-on activities. Climb and slide into new adventures. “Children and parents who participate in the playscape are embracing our vision of ‘Live History and Inspire Our Future,’” says Sally Pentecost, chair of the Naperville Heritage Society. Opportunities for physical, social and imaginative play abound within the 12-acre Naperville Settlement museum campus. Starting May 1, Naperville’s only splash pad will run on days when temperatures are over 70 degrees. The splash pad admission is included with museum entry. “We hope kids will develop a love of history that stays with them forever,” says Rena Tamayo-Calabrese, Naper Settlement president and CEO.

ave you ever heard of a velocipede? What about a dandy horse? Or a bone shaker? No matter what you call it, the modern bicycle has become one of the most well-loved forms of recreation and transportation.
Chicago has more designated bicycle lanes than ever before (and those ubiquitous Divvy bikes!), but it still presents a challenge to bike city streets with young children in tow. That’s something the folks at Kidical Mass hope to change. “We want to normalize families riding in the city,” says Rebecca Resman, volunteer ride organizer in the Roscoe Village neighborhood. Kidical Mass is a national movement started in 2008 to get more families excited
about bike riding and to celebrate a visit by Ted White. White created a documentary about biking culture called “Return of the Scorcher” where the term Critical Mass was first coined. Organizers in Kidical Mass seek to offer positive community building experiences through family bike rides in local neighborhoods. The first Chicago ride was held in 2010 in Logan Square and has grown to include seven more neighborhoods. Rides typically average

2-4 miles (about an hour long), while attendance can range from 30-125 people. Children are expected to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Kids on training wheels are OK, while younger riders are welcomed on trail-a-bikes, bike trailers and child seats attached to an adult bike. Rides begin at a school playground or park and end at a fun stop such a park or pool, ice cream shop or special event. Attendees ride as a group, navigating intersections together while one volunteer stays back as the “sweeper” to insure no one gets
left behind. “We want to help people explore their own neighborhoods and see how accessible these places are on bikes,” Resman says. Many neighborhoods do rides well into the fall, though most take what Resman calls a “wintermission,” with rides starting again in March or April after Chicago streets are clear of snow and ice. Resman says they hope to arrange a few city-wide events this year. Visit kidicalmasschicago.org or kidicalmass.org for ride dates and locations. Kathy Woods

nce kids become school age, the timeframe for family vacation becomes limited—mainly relegated to following the school calendar. Which is why at spring break, families shouldn’t waste precious time on long travel. Stay at the Grand Residences Riviera Cancun, made up of suites with full kitchens, living areas and plenty of accommodation options. A short walk down the beach is Puerto Morelos’ quaint town square with authentic Mexican food and outdoor shops. The highly acclaimed on-site restaurant El Faro means “lighthouse,” and is a tribute to the leaning lighthouse, a famous local landmark. This full-service resort also has a spa, free kids club and an on-site gourmet market for those wanting to cook in the suite. he Chicago Blackhawks are a hot ticket right now. And an expensive one. With an average ticket price of $79 this season, it costs you around $300 just for tickets for a family of four. Then add parking, food and souvenirs and you’re easily out more than $500. But for that kind of money, you not only can take the family to see a game, you also can get out of town for the night. Within a three-hour drive of Chicago, you’re still able to catch games this spring from three different hockey teams.

Check out myqcmallards.net for details and to see what fun promotional events may be happening (including ticket specials for kids and families for certain games).

f you’re not going to take in a Blackhawks game, this might be a close second because they’re the farm team of the big guys. Part of the American Hockey League, the IceHogs also regularly play another team you may be familiar with—the Chicago Wolves. Tickets can sometimes be tough to get since they play in a slightly smaller arena (only 5,700 seats), so make sure to order ahead of time. Seats are $8-$27 and increase $2 for same-day purchases. Everything you need to know about the team can be found at icehogs.com, including a great Hockey 101 page that explains the rules for those new to the game.
y far the closest option (playing their home games in Bensenville), the Steel are part of the United States Hockey League. The biggest difference between these guys and the others? All of the kids on this team (yes kids) are under 21, not paid, and are playing to be recruited to play at the college level. Former USHL players in the NHL include Patrick Sharp of the Blackhawks and Tom Gilbert of the Montreal Canadiens. Aside from watching up-and-coming talent, here is the best part: tickets are just $8, parking is free, and food and drinks are affordable. ven though we are surrounded by tall buildings and tons of people, kids still love to play with tractors. Maybe it’s because John Deere is in our blood in Illinois. So when cabin fever hits this spring, pack up the family, grab their toy tractors and take a John Deere-themed trip.
Start at Deere’s roots in Grand Detour, Ill. Located about 15 minutes off I-88, this is where Deere opened his shop caption, see pageblacksmith xx. and built his first plow. Today it’s home to the John Deere Historic Site. Open May-October, the site includes Deere’s house, some
beautiful grounds, and a working blacksmith shop. Kids 11 and under are free, adults $5. The next stop is just about an hour away in Moline. Here you will find two more John Deere attractions, both free: CONTINUED ON PAGE 21

Kids and adults are encouraged to climb on-board and touch everything. Plus, there is a special area for younger Deere fans to play and pretend, videos to watch, and a large John Deere store where you can buy anything with the classic logo on it. The newest John Deere attraction is also the farthest from Chicago, but if you are interested in history, this is your stop. The Tractor and Engine Museum in Waterloo, Iowa, opened just this past year and is filled with vintage tractors and engines. They also have several exhibits with young

Kids can hunt for eggs in the meadow—Meadow Room, that is—or do art projects, listen to live music and nosh on yummy snacks. Happily ever after, indeed! 2-4 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. April 4. $30.

Hip hop! Holiday traditions can be a bit overwhelming for kids with special needs. That’s why Simon Malls has developed Caring Bunny, a special photo session with the Easter Bunny in an environment designed for kids who have sensory, physical and other developmental needs. The Chicago French Market transforms into the hoppiest place of all, thanks to free rides on the Bunny Train, which takes families around the concourse of the Metramarket (watch for the Easter Bunny!). Starting at 1:30 p.m., the market’s 30 vendors take part in a large-scale egg hunt, so kids can keep an eye out while mom and dad shop

You can hunt for eggs with Cosley Zoo’s resident lapines at the annual Great Egg Scramble, which is divided up by age. After the 20-minute hunt, take some time to visit with the Easter Bunny and then meet some of the zoo’s residents, from box turtles to a miniature donkey and, yes, two rabbits, Petey and Cadbury. 9-11 a.m. March 28. Free with zoo admission. 1356 N. Gary Ave., Wheaton. cosleyzoo.org ● Look out below! At Odyssey Fun World, the Easter eggs aren’t delivered by the infamous
Bunny—they’re dropped from a visiting helicopter. The drops take place on the hour, and each kid 12 and under receives a ticket for one drop. After you’ve hunted to your heart’s content, enjoy inflatables, the Cow Train, face painting and balloon artists for a little extra festive flair. 11 a.m.-5 p.m. April 4. $5. 19111 Oak Park Ave., Tinley Park. ofwtinleypark.com Elizabeth Diffin

hicago has become almost as notorious for its cookies as for its winters. But it’s a bit tricky figuring out just which place to go when that sweet craving hits. But don’t fret! We rounded up two lucky kids to sample cookies so you could have this handy cookie chart. Danielle Braff Get a table

They’re 5 ounces, and the size of your head. You can taste the sugar, butter and chocolate chunks. Plus, they have gluten-free options.
Rice-crispy chocolate chip ($2.95). It’s a gigantic chocolate chip cookie with small ricecrispy treats popped on top.
This trendy, rustic Near North spot especially known for its brunch fare has a bakery. It’s popular with kids and hipsters alike.
The cookies are huge— they cover a salad plate. They’re slightly crunchy but soft and chewy too. They have gluten-free options.
The Chocolate Chunk cookie ($2.95) was one of the best. The chunks of chocolate were massive, and the cookie was deliciously crisp.
What makes this place unique is that they deliver, and they deliver late at night. They also ship if you’re outside of the delivery area.
They’re soft, and they taste just like you make them if you turned on your oven (these are great if you want to pretend that you baked).
The S’mores cookie ($2.75) is a hit with kids and adults who like their cookies sweet and gooey. It’s a fun twist on the summer classic.
Lincoln Park bakery and you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped back in time into an old-fashioned bakery where kids rule.
They’re big, sweet and made fresh daily. They taste like cookies a grandmother would serve you with a big glass of milk.
The Iced Sugar ($2.95), a sugar cookie smothered in cupcake frosting, was incredible. The best parts of a cupcake and cookie, together.
It’s a hip newcomer and the bakery is a haven for anyone who’s craving everything from a jumbo cookie to a scone or a cup of coffee.
They’re large, colorful, soft and buttery. The kids were drawn to the sprinkle cookies while adults dig the rich, chocolate-filled cookies.

WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE
I
t’s spring in Chicago—time to break out the swimming suits! It might not seem like the ideal season for wet-and-wild fun, but that doesn’t mean splishing and splashing is out of the question. These low-cost and local options—and did we mention indoor?—are just the ticket. My family of four checked them out to give you the inside scoop.
1
The Water Works
Schaumburg Park District 505 N. Springinsguth Road, Schaumburg (847) 490-2505 parkfun.org Youth: $7, $5 residents; Adults: $9, $7 residents Best for: Feeling like a kid again This giant indoor water park has features to keep kids and parents giddy all day. The water playground slides and rapid water channel were our 3- and 5-year-old’s favorites. The drop slide and diving board gave the hubs and I quite a rush. Water slides for those 48 inches and above are thrilling—one goes straight down! The grill is great for a quick snack, pizza or burger. 62 Spring 2015 • goingplaces

Upon entering, you can clearly see how this park district earned The National Gold Medal, the highest honor possible in parks and recreation. The water park features the best tot area I have seen, with seesaws and swings. Imagine not having to wrangle the baby in your arms the entire visit! There are two water slides for those over 48 inches. The tube slide bursts out the building and is even visible from the highway. My 5-year-old ChicagoParent.com

The air traffic control-themed water slide is a hit with the pre-K set. We also loved the large lap pool lane to practice swimming. Imagine five Chicago Bulls in bumper cars. Then throw in lacrosse-style rackets and a small ball and you’ve got WhirlyBall. WhirlyBall courts are about the size of basketball courts. Players use rackets to scoop, pass and hurl the ball at a big circle, instead of a hoop. It’s one exhilarating ride. Cars go about 4 mph, but it feels faster. Parents who’d rather sit on the sidelines can watch matches through windows. (Games last for just 10 minutes.) The cost is $15 for 30 minutes, and players must be at least 54 inches tall. “Everyone can play together, from
super athletes to o the person who likes casual social al games. At the youth non-profit CircEsteem, building a circus is all about building a compassionate and diverse community. Classes span ages 3-18 and teach anything from tumbling to juggling to trapeze work. But what the CircEsteem staff hope to teach more than anything is self-esteem, confidence and mutual respect. Programs offered include weekend classes, summer camps and guaranteed participation in the public annual Spring Circus (April 18-19 and 25-26). Scholarship slots are available for students with financial need.
The circus is for the brave at heart and the healthy in spirit, and Actors Gymnasium works to build both of these qualities with its wide array of classes, summer camps and workshops. Classes start at age 2 and focus on the fundamental skills, both physically and personally, needed for circus greatness. Check out their progress at the Spring Youth Circus, May 16-17 and 23-24.

ne of the perks of living in Chicago is enjoying the best of both worlds: the amenities of a world-class city as well as the pleasures of forest and fen, pond and prairie. Local forest preserve districts are home to thousands of acres of natural beauty. Besides their obvious curb appeal, many preserves offer unique educational programs and recreational opportunities. We polled forest preserve district administrators for not-to-be-missed forest preserves in five counties. Pack a picnic, dig out the fishing rods and camping gear, family adventures await! Take time for fun Terminal 2 is more than just the spot for Delta’s flights. It’s also the home to Kids on the Fly, a colorful playspace developed by the folks at Chicago Children’s Museum. Spend your pre-flight time exploring an airplane (great prep for your trip!), visiting the control tower and flying a helicopter. Best of all: it’s totally free, meaning you can buy more of those trashy tabloids.

Eat up From the food court in Terminal 1, kids can watch planes taking off and landing for built-in mealtime entertainment. Looking for some fave Chicago flavors? O’Hare is home to miniaturized locations of Eli’s Cheesecake, Garrett’s Popcorn and Nuts on Clark— plus lots and lots of Chicago-style hot dogs.

O’Hare International Airport is the busiest air travel hub in the nation, which can make family travel a bit challenging. But before you despair, check out these helpful hints for navigating the terminals and gates. Elizabeth Diffin

Plan ahead Before you leave the house, bone up on travel regulations from the TSA, including what to do with formula or kids’ medicines, who can wear shoes through security, and how to navigate security with kids who have special needs. And check flychicago.com/ohare for maps that point out family restrooms and helpful spots to breastfeed. ChicagoParent.com
