Black Dog Gelato

Locations in Ukrainian Village and Roscoe Village blackdogchicago.com Chicago is crazy about its gelato, and rightly so, because the city has so many great options. Black Dog Gelato has been rising on the trendy ladder for a while now and after four years in business, their inspired and seasonally refreshing favorites never cease to amaze. caramel varieties, but what about pickier eaters? Manager of the Ukrainian Village location, Adam Haap, says you’d be shocked how many weird and wacky flavors kids are dying to try. Currently, they’re really into flavors like cinnamon and brown sugar, raspberry apple cider sorbet, Nutella with pretzel and Oreo mint. Black Dog offers kid-sized scoops, and a delicious, tangy assortment of sorbets for the lactose intolerant crowd. Price range: $2.50-$5.25 For kids with allergies: Because of the ever-changing, unique flavors, make sure to ask if a product is made with

Margie’s Candies

Locations in Bucktown and Lakeview margiesfinecandies.com Yummy ice creamy heaven is a given here. The original location in Bucktown has been around since 1921, and its fans have included the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. And although the space is too tight for strollers, kids are more than welcome at this step back into the ‘60s ice cream parlor scene. Yahaira Rodriguez, who has been a waitress at Margie’s for six years, says the turtle sundae is the perfect Margie’s choice, but the marshmallow sundae is usually the top pick for the kids. Even if you’re not in it for the handmade, crafted-daily, milky ice cream, a visit for the atmosphere and the history alone is worth the trip. Price range: $2.75-$6.95 For kids with allergies: Be cautious here, with peanut allergies in particular. Make sure to notify any staff of any allergies.

Special this summer: The strawberry ice cream is a perfect accompaniment to the steamy summer months.

Forever Yogurt

Various locations in Chicago and suburbs foreveryogurt.com Forever Yogurt will always call Chicago home, says Less Ross, partner of Forever Yogurt. And Chicago has a lot to owe Forever Yogurt, too, because Ross says it was really the first company to introduce the froyo phenomenon to the Midwest. Froyo is made of all natural flavoring and local and artisan dairy products. Flavors span every palate, from honey green tea to Dutch chocolate to CO N T I N U E D O N PAG E

pomegranate raspberry. Kids love the swirl spouts, where their favorite flavors are combined for taste bud nirvana. Kids will also enjoy the toppings bar, which includes more toppings than anyone would ever need. The shops switch out their flavors so there’s always something new, but staples such as chocolate, vanilla, Euro tart and some type of Italian ice sorbet always remain. Price range: Prices depend on the weight of your cup. For kids with allergies: Every flavor of Forever Yogurt is clearly labeled for food allergy and lactose intolerant warnings. Special this summer: Forever Yogurt will introduce the Fronado, which will resemble a Dairy Queen blizzard.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams

Locations in Southport and Wicker Park jenis.com The first thing you’ll notice is the heavenly scent of freshly baked waffle cones. Although Jeni’s is known for its artisan-style, foreverchanging flavors inspired by anything from the season to classic paintings, the shop does a great job of also hitting those flavors closer to home. Kids will swoon over flavors such as the Ndali Estate vanilla bean, the milkiest chocolate in the world and the wildberry lavender, while parents will jump between flavors like whiskey and pecans and the buckeye state. One of the best things about Jeni’s, according to brand ambassador Madison

Palmer, is the way the ingredients are so carefully handMargie’s Candies picked by Jeni and her team. Jeni’s ice cream uses grassgrazed Midwestern milk, local produce and fair-trade certified Ugandan vanilla bean and Dutch cocoa. Price range: $4-$8 For kids with allergies: Upon request, staff will use a new bucket and scoop. For the lactose intolerant crowd, try the sorbet. Special this summer: A summer favorite is always black raspberry and sweet corn. Jeni’s plans to introduce a new line of fruity froyo flavors all based on the work of painter Henri Matisse.

hanks to the enviable climate of California, we can pretty much count on having beautiful, ruby red strawberries at our fingertips any time of the year. But there’s no sweeter pleasure than biting into a freshly picked strawberry, warm from the sun. And while we may be a ways from the sun-drenched West Coast, the Midwest still offers a fair number of family-friendly spots where you can pick your own strawberries. But these five races are so much fun, you’ll barely realize you’re breaking a sweat—and they’re perfect for all types of families. After all, the family that runs together, stays together, right? Or at least avoids hypertension. Elizabeth Diffin

For the feminists Go ahead—run like a girl! Girls on the Run empowers girls in grades 3-8 through the sport of running, and this annual 5K run celebrates all they’ve accomplished—alongside their parents, coaches and friends. We love that Lincoln Park Zoo doesn’t charge an admission fee, and this race helps keep it that way. Printers Row Lit Fest is a festival that was always on my calendar pre-kids—but I love it now because it continues to be a welcoming place post-children. It brings books outdoors, adds music, speakers and fun activities for children, including story times, singing and characters straight from their favorite books! What’s not to love? Danielle Braff

During the African Fest, Washington Park is transformed into an African marketplace. Intricately carved drums, gorgeous dresses, brightly colored Kente cloth, books and jewelry are for sale. Not a shopper? Head to the entertainment stages to see African dance at its finest, drumming and performers like India. Arie and Chicago’s own Chaka Khan. Food vendors are plentiful, too—the grilled marinated chicken skewers still have my mouth watering. Lolita M. Cusic

With tons of great food, music, vendors and rides, the Taste of Westmont is one of my favorite festivals. There is no shortage of things to see, do or eat at this celebration that runs the length of downtown Westmont. The music line-up honors the Godfather of Blues, Muddy Waters. FROM RIBBITS TO ROBOTS

(and a trip to the moon)

S

chool is out, so chances are yourr kids are losing knowledge as wee speak. But you can fight back against summer brain drain, thanks nks to great new exhibits at some of our favorite rite local museums. Here are three that are sure re to be hits with your summertime scholars (shhh, it’s our little secret). ■ Slippery and wet aren’t just words for your kids when they’ve been in the pool for too long. They’re also great descriptions of the frogs and fellow cold-blooded friends that are part of Shedd Aquarium’s Amphibians exhibit. The exhibit features more than 40 amphibians, including poison dart frogs, a 50-pound Japanese giant salamander and Caecilians (amphibians that bear a striking resemblance to oversized earthworms). The exhibit is designed for families, with animals that are on kids’ eye level and habitats that groups can cluster around. Along the way, you’ll also learn about how to help at-risk amphibians, and maybe even spy a few amphibians of your own this summer. ■ We’ve come a long way from Rosie the Robot! That’s more than obvious when you visit Robot Revolution, the

Museum of Science & Industry’s newest temporary exhibit (through Jan. 3, 2016). Kids will be enthralled by the 40 robots that can do everything from playing soccer to traversing rugged terrain. There’s even a baby seal robot to pet! The exhibit is designed to get young people thinking about contemporary robotics—and considering how to get in on the future of the science. Plus, there’s a fun Build-a-Bot element that lets kids (and grownups) design their own personal robot. Whether or not she’ll do the laundry is

entirely up to you. ■ If you’re lucky, your summer vacation might involve a long plane ride to somewhere exotic—but no matter what, it won’t hold a candle to a trip to the moon. Check out Adler Planetarium’s new permanent exhibit, Mission Moon, an in-depth look at America’s quest for the moon and one man, Jim Lovell, who was there every step of the way. Kids can shoot off stomp rockets, play Mission Control, drive on the moon, pose in Neil

M

y boys grew up listening to djembes, so I wasn’t surprised when they wanted to be drummers, too.

They’ve performed at school, at church, in the Bud Billiken Parade and even at Soldier Field. This summer, they may add the lakefront to that list. On warm summer afternoons, drummers from all over the city and suburbs gather at 63rd Street Beach for the drum circle. They come with their djembes, their dunduns (pronounced doon-doons) and their shekeres, ready to play into the night. This isn’t a formal concert. There are no programs. No official start or end time. No designated day, though weekends are a good bet. The drum circle at 63rd Street Beach is strictly informal, which is part of its appeal. It’s all about unity, music, rhythm and fun. People bring their flutes, saxophones and trumpets, too. “I go out there every year,” says Babu Atiba, who plays the djembe and teaches it as well. “You’re walking along the lakefront and you hear these sounds from the distance. MORE THAN A WALK IN THE PARK

S

Chicago Park District

Lucky for you, the Chicago Park District already did. Night Out in the Parks is a trove of free or nominal cost family events happening in neighborhood parks all across the city. Your job? Pack sandwiches, grab a blanket and go! Here’s what you can expect. Kathy Woods

Chicago Shakespeare in the Parks Calling all groundlings! Theater, the featured production is usually one of the Bard’s lighter, more humorous works that will grab the attention of the youngest theater-goer with its colorful costumes and lively stage antics. Plus your kids will love the free cardboard Shakespeare fans.

Midnight Circus in the Parks There’s something magical about the circus. That’s why kids hang upside down from monkey bars pretending to be trapeze artists and use hula hoops for training backyard lions. At Midnight Circus (named for the hour of a brand new day when anything can happen) you won’t see any lions, but you will see acrobats, aerialists, clowns and contortionists. The kids will love watching Samantha and Max, children of founders Jeff and Julie Jenkins, perform with the troupe. Be forewarned: if your daughter doesn’t already own a tutu, she will ask for one.

Midnight Circus

ummer’s here and the kids are having a blast at soccer camp and swimming lessons because you spent hours of careful planning and lots of hard-earned cash to get them there. Wouldn’t it be nice to relax and let somebody else dream up ideas for your weekend calendar?

Music in the Parks You’ve had a long day at work and it’s hot outside. It’s also the perfect time to throw together a “snacky” supper (cheese cubes, baby carrots, popcorn, apples—finger foods you can grab easily) and head to the park for a concert. Go early and let the kids run around; then relax to the cool, sweet notes of choral a cappella or be energized by the lively rhythms of a world music percussion concert.

Movies in the Parks It used to feel special to watch a movie, but since laptops, iPods and tablets have made them so ubiquitous, they’ve lost some of their attraction as a unique family activity. That being said, movies in the parks are a lot of fun. There’s something about sitting under the stars with a crowd of friendly people munchCHicago Park District ing picnic fare, watching Bill Murray and his buddies fight paranormal invaders in New York City. S’MORE PLEASE!

S

’mores have long been an essential part of summer. The name of this tasty treat is a contraction of the phrase “some more” for obvious reasons: it’s very hard to have just one!

Most commonly made by a campfire (but a microwave, oven or grill work in a pinch), s’mores are simply a roasted marshmallow and piece of chocolate sandwiched between two graham crackers. The warmth of the marshmallow melts the chocolate, making the whole thing gooey, messy and delicious. A recipe for s’mores first appeared in a 1927 book, Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts, by Loretta Scott Crew. The s’more is so beloved that it even

has its own day: Aug. 10 is officially National S’mores Day. It is always a treat to indulge in a traditional s’more but there are also plenty of local variations on this time-honored summer tradition. From cookies to cupcakes to pizza and beyond, the basic s’mores concept can be enjoyed in a number of delicious formats.

The whole thing is dipped in bittersweet chocolate and finished with smoked sea salt. CO N T I N U E D O N PAG E 5 6

lirty Cupcakes (flirtycupcakes.com), with locations in University Village and Lincoln Square—and a van that travels around—offers two fun twists on the traditional s’more. The S’moreWich Cookie contains two handmade shortbread graham cracker cookies dipped in chocolate, with marshmallow Italian buttercream in between the cookies. Toasted mini mallows coat the sides. The S’more Me Over Cupcake pairs a graham cracker crust with a marshmallow cream center layered with dark chocolate and topped with a toasted marshmallow meringue with dark chocolate drizzled over the top.

Which HAWAIIAN ISLAND is right for your family?

T

here’s nothing like saying “Aloha!” to a new experience together as a family—and traveling to Hawaii is an experience nobody will ever forget.

But it is an expensive endeavor. Roundtrip tickets often top $1,000 and deciding where to visit in Hawaii is not easy. Given there isn’t a comprehensive ferry system connecting the six main islands and inter-island flights will significantly add to your trip tab (starting

at $85 one way), choosing the island of your dreams is the first step in planning the ultimate tropical getaway. What type of family you are mayy very well determine the ideal island for your clan, so here are some recommendations based on your “family personality.” Whether you’re adventurous, beach bums, amateur scientists or hungry for a slice of history, there is the perfect island waiting just for you.

Linda Marsicano

HISTORIANS: Want to have the e hustle and bustle of a metropolis while witnessing a place of historical significance in our nation’s history? Then Oahu, home to Honolulu, Waikiki and Pearl Harbor is just the place. Honolulu and Waikiki satisfy the fast pace city families are accustomed to, while the island’s role in World War II is a wonderful learning experience for older children. Often called “The Gathering Place,” Oahu is a spot any family would be fortunate to o spend their time. Where to stay: Who knew it was possible pos oss o s to mix a Hawaiian vacation with a Disney-themed trip (minus a cruise)? With the debut of Disney’s Aulani Resort in 2011, now you can kill two birds (err mice?) with one stone while lounging seaside. 58 Summer 2015 • goingplaces

BEACH LOVERS: Sure, every Hawaiian Island has amazing beaches, but Maui has 30 miles of them—each rivaling the last in terms of waves, surf and beauty. What’s more is that every day is a perfect beach day—you might just have to drive a bit. If it’s rainy in your spot, head south to tony Waimea and you’re practically guaranteed sun. Most tourists prefer South Maui, which is where Waimea is, or West Maui, with the enchanting Kaanapali Beach and its resorts connected by a delightful beachfront path. Where to Stay: In Waimea, the newly renovated Fairm Fairmont Kea Lani (meaning white heaven) is comprised of one-bedroom suites, giving parents privacy while kids dig tthe cool water slide. In Kaanapali, the Westin Kaanapali Ocean Re Resort Villas combine full condos w with resort amenities, and the Hyatt Regency with its opulent H grounds, g tropical birds and Tour of the t Stars program (stargazing with telescopes) te are the perfect choice. The Th newly opened Montage Kapalua Kap Bay is a boutique property featur featuring luxury condos in upper Western Maui offering a peaceful setting yet only a short drive to the lively town of Lahaina. DAY TRIPPERS: Molokai and Lanai are certainly worth visiting, but with their limited (and expensive) accommodations, they are best saved as a day trip. Luckily, a short ferr y trip from Maui to both islands make spending the day at either island easy and enjoyable.

T R AV E L

GEOLOGY FANATICS: The Big Island is, as one might imagine, the biggest island in Hawaii. But many people don’t realize that its size is so comparatively immense that it’s larger than all of the other islands combined. One of the many highlights of this destination is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, home of Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes on Earth. Where to Stay: Widely considered among the most family-friendly resorts is the 62-acre Hilton Waikoloa Village with its expansive pools and private ocean-fed snorkeling lagoon.

OUTDOOR ENTHUSIASTS: Kauai, one of the most beautiful islands anywhere, is often called the Garden Isle due to its lush landscape. This island is graced with aweinspiring views that can be seen by helicopter or on various hikes. Waimea Canyon, dubbed the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” offers trails for novices and seasoned hikers alike. Where to Stay: The most kid-friendly property is the gorgeous Grand Hyatt in the town of Poipu—it woos guests the moment they step into the open-air lobby. A pool complex with a slide and salt-water lagoon is the perfect place to cool off. The luxurious yet kid-friendly St. Regis Princeville on the famed North Shore will make kids feel like royalty. The Kauai Marriott is an upscale oceanside retreat that won’t break the bank. ChicagoParent.com

SESAME PLACE

I

f you grew up watching TV in the ‘70s or ‘80s, chances are that Big Bird, Oscar and the whole Sesame Street gang were a significant part of your childhood. But unlike The Jetsons, Sesame Street isn’t simply a relic of the past—today’s kids are just as likely (if not more) to know Elmo as theyy are Doc McStuffins.

Elizabeth Diffin Elizabeth Diffin

Perhaps it’s that longevity that contributes to the popularity of Sesame Place, an amusement park in Langhorne, Pa., that’s devoted to everything Sesame Street. Just like the show, Sesame Place is best enjoyed by kids 7 and under. The park, itself created in the early 1980s, is a popular destination for families, thanks to its proximity to Philadelphia (30 minutes north). Having grown up in that area, I had memories of visiting Sesame Place as a child, but taking my nephews there made me realize how much things have changed. For instance, back in 1989, Prairie Dawn was the only girl on Sesame Street, and now you can take pictures with Abby Cadabby and Zoe in the Sesame Street Neighborhood (don’t worry, classic characters still make the rounds, too). 62 Summer 2015 • goingplaces

GP0515_62.indd 1

All of the expected amusement park rides make an appearance, but with a Sesame Street twist. So you can ride the Monster Mix-Up or Honker Dinger Derby, rather than the teacups or the scrambler. Strangely, my nephews seemed to gravitate toward the lowest-tech rides, like Snuffy’s Slides (pretty much your basic tube slides) and the Monster Clubhouse (a three-story net climb), both of which have been there since the park’s inception. If you prefer waterpark fun, there are nine water attractions. Or, take a break at one of the fun musical shows— we liked “Elmo Rocks” and mystery-themed “Elmo the Musical,” both starring favorite characters. Much like its counterpart in Orlando, Sesame Place takes a lot of pride in

The one can’t-miss is Sesame Place’s daily parade, an extravaganza celebrating all the characters and places you love, from the Honkers to Hooper’s Store (and Big Bird, of course). Arrive early to get a seat on the curb, or you’ll have a hard time getting your little ones to cooperate. Like at any amusement park, ChicagoParent.com

T R AV E L there are challenges, from bad weather to long lines. If you have a smartphone, download the free app to help you plan your day. And if it rains for at least an hour, there’s a Sunny Day Guarantee that lets you return when the sun is shining again. As for food, it’s expensive, and outside food is not permitted. I’d recommend bringing lunch and eating in one of the picnic areas, taking advantage of the hand stamps that allow for re-admittance to the park. If you’re not sure if your kiddos are quite ready for the full Magic Kingdom experience—or if they’re just really enthusiastic Elmo devotees— Sesame Place is a great place to start. It’s got all the flash of a big amusement park, but on a level that’s more manageable for parents of young kids. And that’s pretty much a guarantee that there are sunny days ahead, indeed.

verybody loves improv: the zaniness, the scenes created on the spot from audience suggestions, and the potential for the funniest (and most unexpected) moments to happen in real time. But did you know that Chicago—with its renowned troupes and stages—is where the rules of modern improvisational comedy were formed? So really, there’s no better place to introduce your offspring to the magic of this hilarious art form. Thinking that improv is strictly a kids-free endeavor? Thankfully, you get to think again. CLOSE to HOME

So regardless of personal preference, you owe it to yourself, and your kids, to try camping this summer. And here is the fun part—you don’t have to travel far to do it. Within 90 minutes of downtown, there are plenty of options for you and your family to spend the night around the fire sleeping among the stars.

iven a choice between a comfy bed or sleeping on the ground, I would usually pick the bed. The idea of sleeping outdoors on purpose isn’t at the top of my list of fun things to do. But in order to truly experience nature, you have to do more than just take a hike through the local woods. Spending the night outdoors allows you to hear the sounds, see the stars and introduce your kids to a side of Mother Nature they usually only see out of their bedroom windows.

Stop by the new Hamill Family Animal Encounters (opening in July), which allows visitors to touch wallabies and emus or help feed some of the 900 parakeets in residence. You’ll also be able to see llamas, reindeer, alpacas and red pandas in their outdoor habitats and interact with a menagerie of “animal ambassadors” who stop by. Or maybe you’re looking for

something a bit more theatrical. Birds from around the world show off their swooping and soaring at the Festival of Flight, a 30-minute interactive show that may have you ducking in your seat. The free show takes place three times a day from May 23-Sept. 7 and features hawks, parrots and a hadaba ibis. new. Eight Japanese macaques (better known as snow monkeys) moved into the zoo over the winter and are starting to make their new habitat— and new city—home. At the Regenstein Macaque Forest, you can watch them interact with each other, explore the treetops and their personal hot spring or experiment with some of the fancy new tech Lincoln Park’s scientists have rigged up. At the very least, kids are sure to get a kick out of their red faces— and even redder behinds. Looking to add a little culture to your zoo visit? Check out the brand new sculpture show, which will run May-October. Each sculpture fits the theme of “Nature in Motion” with an emphasis on size—each sculpture will be 10-12 feet tall. Sounds like they’re custom-made for photo ops with your little monkeys in motion! Adults and older teens (16 and up) can also take part in one of five guided sculpture strolls through the zoo.
