September 2013 Message from the National President Dear Students, Welcome to the 2013 fall semester! To those of you who are new to The Chicago School, we are honored and privileged to have you among us. To those of you who are continuing your studies, welcome back. I hope you had a restful summer break and found time to rejuvenate and spend time with your loved ones. I know, I speak for all faculty and staff when I tell you how committed we are to helping you find ways to make the most of your potential and harness the energy needed to advance you in fulfilling your career, personal goals and aspirations. To all of you, I invite you to begin this academic year by taking the time to reflect upon TCSPP’s mission, values and philosophy. I also encourage you to constantly find ways to engage with our learning community, so as to further advance our impact in the community, and to commit to doing your part to contribute positively to a professional, collegial, and ethical environment. This year, we plan to focus our efforts on ensuring that you have the tools needed to be successful both inside and outside of the classroom. This fall, TCSPP is helping you take care of your health through a new partnership with Aetna Student Health Insurance. Also, you continue to have 24/7 access to Student Solutions, TCSPP’s confidential, around-the-clock counseling service. TCSPP's California Counseling Centers have been awarded $20,000 by the American Psychological Association's (APA) Education Doctorate for seed funding to pursue APA accreditation for its internship program at the Centers located in Westwood and Irvine, California. This is the second grant TCSPP has received from the APA over the past months. This academic year, under Dr. Daun Baker’s leadership, the California Counseling Centers funded two internship positions; now train over 40 of our own students; and provide mental health and behavioral services to nearly 1,000 client hours monthly.
Chicago Campus Students Score 100 Percent Pass Rate on NCE Exam One hundred percent of the 109 M.A. Counseling Psychology students at the Chicago Campus who chose to take the National Counselor Examination (NCE) for Licensure in April have passed. The NCE is a national standardized examination developed by the National Board of Certified Counselors to assess key areas of knowledge for prospective professional counselors. Read more.
Preparing Future Psychology Faculty Program Completes First Year Reaching across the three TCSPP campuses, the Preparing Future Psychology Faculty (PF2) Program, supported by the American Psychological Association, recently concluded its first year with 20 participants completing all the requirements of the program. The eight-month program was developed in response to the national need to increase the diversity of college and university faculty members in the fields of psychology and behavioral sciences. PF2 builds upon the national Preparing Future Faculty Initiative launched in 1993 by the Council of Graduate Schools and the Association of American Colleges and Universities. Led by Dr. Orlando Taylor, president of the Washington, D.C. Campus, and Dr. Cynthia Winston, a visiting scholar and an associate professor at Howard University, the program targeted primarily doctoral students from racial and ethnic minority groups. Details on next year's program will be announced to doctoral students in the coming months.

For the first time in TCSPP's history, a Master of Public Health Program will be offered in spring 2014 online and fall 2014 at the Los Angeles Campus. The 42credit degree consists of a core of 27 credits, six credits of field work and capstone, and nine credits of an emphasis area. According to Dr. Gino Natalicchio, vice president of Online Programs at TCSPP, there is an increasing need for scholarly and applied leadership in the fields of public health policy, leadership theory, statistics and research design aligned with national public health education competency standards. Meet Alumnus Captain Jeffrey Coady, Psy.D., ABPP, SAMHSA's Regional Administrator A 1999 Clinical Psy.D. graduate of the Chicago Campus, Captain Jeffrey A. Coady, Psy.D., ABPP, is a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services (SAMHSA) Regional Administrator, and is a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS). He has been employed with SAMHSA for 22 months, and the federal government for nine years. SAMHSA is the agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that leads public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. Captain Coady is responsible for providing national leadership in developing and implementing behavioral health programs and systems for underserved populations. "The Chicago School understands the importance of community. It is the partnerships and collaborations at the community level that will foster primary and behavioral health care integration; advance behavioral health as a public health issue; and promote a recovery-oriented system of care.� said Captain Coady. New National Center of Academic & Dissertation Excellence Provides Students with Support to Achieve Success As a result of listening to students to improve services, the new National Center of Academic & Dissertation Excellence (NCADE) will be available to students this fall. Under the direction of Associate Vice President Belinda McFeeters, Ph.D. the Center's mission is to support students with academic resources to enhance their coursework and scholarship and by providing assistance and guidance in the areas of Institutional Review Board support, methodology, grammar, and APA formatting and style. Prior to the creation of NCADE, writing and methodology support for dissertations was primarily provided by faculty members through classroom work and seminars led by dissertation chairs. Now, with the introduction of the NCADE, each doctoral student will be assigned a Dissertation Writing Expert (DWE) and will have access to a methodologist. This shift means that dissertation chairs have more time to mentor and support students with the academic content of dissertations and DWEs are able to assist students with the mechanics of writing, style and methodology.

Center for Latino/a Mental Health Organizes Annual Behavioral Health Conference and Celebrates Fifth Anniversary Adelante! Transforming Latino/a Behavioral Health is the theme of the Latino/a Behavioral Health Conference. scheduled for October 18 at the Cicero Community Center in Chicago. Presented by the Center for Latino/a Mental Health at the Chicago Campus, the purpose of the conference is to educate, raise awareness and prevent mental health issues afflicting the Latino/a population. This year's focus is on increasing cultural competency; the capacity for effective service delivery; and awareness of barriers to mental health services. Immediately following the conference, at the Chicago Campus, the Center will host a celebration of its fifth anniversary featuring an exhibition by artist Lizette Cruz, whose vibrant paintings (as seen above) reveal the rich culture and history of Puerto Rico.
The Chicago School at HACU In October, the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), is holding its annual conference October 26-28 in Chicago. The three-day event provides an opportunity for educators and students to discuss current issues affecting Latino higher education. Prior to the conference, TCSPP Chicago Campus President Dr. Patricia Arredondo, is the keynote speaker for the HACU 12th Annual Latino Higher Education Leadership Institute pre-conference luncheon. In addition, also representing TCSPP, National President Dr. NealonWoods and Dr. Finkelman, Professor and Chair, I-O Business Psychology, are serving on the Host and Planning Committee for the conference.
Graduate Research Forums Come to the Los Angeles Campus In November, TCSPP's Office of Career Services is presenting three Graduate Research Forums (GRF) at the Los Angeles Campus, including the Irvine and Westwood Branches. GRF has run successfully on the Chicago Campus for the past two years and emphasizes the interconnection of research and practice. Students will give poster-style presentations on various mental health topics that provide opportunities to share their ideas and receive feedback at different
stages of development, from formulating a research question to finalizing a conference presentation. Submissions are due on October 2.
Career Development Week (Formerly CareerFest) Helps Take Students to the Next Level Career Development Week (CDW), formerly known as CareerFest, is scheduled for October 5-13 across all three campuses. Using a new departmentcollaborative approach, the event will offer eight days of unique seminars, workshops and colloquiums designed to take students from pupils to preprofessionals. With more departments involved, new ideas, planning and partnerships have developed fresh new presentations and topics, such as Working in Crisis/Hostage Negotiation, From the Employer Perspective, and a Financial Savviness workshop. TCSPP National Service Month in October TCSPP will hold its annual National Service Month in October. The Service Month Committee has put together opportunities that include food banks, the Downtown Women’s Center, and a coastal preservation organization. Community service opportunities are available for faculty and staff at all campuses. TCSPP has a strong history of service, a history formally recognized through the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The goal of National Service Month is to further this commitment and promote engagement among the community. There are several sites from which to choose, and registration will close when volunteer capacity is reached. For more information contact Stephanie Swartz or Vivian Tran. In a related story, last month more than 40 students, faculty, staff and alumni came together for TRANSFORM 2013 last month. Organized by TCSPP's Office of Student Affairs, the annual volunteer event is a community service day of giving back to help transform communities throughout Southern California. Participants took on projects ranging from litter abatement in El Segundo to cooking and serving food at a shelter in Laguna Beach. TRANSFORM is organized every spring and fall terms just before new student orientation, and serves as an opportunity for students, faculty, staff and alumni to become better acquainted with each other.
Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Invites Dr. Orlando Taylor to Annual Conference D.C. Campus President Dr. Orlando Taylor will participate in the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's 43rd Annual Legislative Conference (ALC) in Washington, D.C. the last week of September, serving as a panelist for the policy session: The Bailout Part II: Rescuing Youth From Carnage and Chaos!, hosted by Congressman Bobby L. Rush (IL). The ALC brings together lawmakers, stakeholders and concerned citizens to examine critical issues impacting African Americans.
