MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

dear cso friends and family, The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is a cultural treasure and has been so for over 128 years. During the 2018/19 season, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association reaffirmed its commitment to its mission and profound impact as a cultural leader. Throughout the season, the quality of the musical performances exemplified the artistic excellence for which the Orchestra is known, while the efforts of the CSOA's leadership put the organization on a path toward its long-term sustainability. The five-year agreement reached on April 27, 2019, between the CSOA and the CSO musicians places us in a strong position to realize the goals outlined in the strategic plan created during fiscal year 2017. This will allow the organization to embrace the future optimistically, buoyed by the security of a sound, mission-based fiscal plan. The inspirational outpouring of support from the people of Chicago and fans around the globe was a testament to the CSOA's profound impact as a beacon for the power of classical music performance. Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti and the CSO captivated the public through their music-making as well as their commitment to sharing classical music with a diverse audience. A great example of this from this past season was the free community concert at Millennium Park with members of the Chicago Symphony and Civic Orchestra of Chicago performing side by side under Maestro Muti's baton. This marked the beginning of the centennial seasons of the Civic Orchestra and the CSO's concerts for young people. Maestro Muti and the CSO continued to enthrall listeners throughout the season, culminating in three epic concert performances of Verdi's Aida, bringing the season to a triumphant close. I would like to thank all those who support the Association, beginning with the world-class musicians of the CSO who enrich our lives with each performance. I would also like to thank the Trustees, who recognize and honor the exceptional artistry of the musicians and who remain steadfast in their support. Their commitment is echoed by all the CSOA's support groups, including Governing Members, Women's Board, League, Overture Council, Negaunee Music Institute Board, African American Network and Latino Alliance—all models through their leadership and gifts. The generosity of donors, foundations, corporations, sponsors and patrons is also essential to the life of the CSOA, as is the support of our numerous, committed volunteers. I also want to express my admiration and appreciation of our accomplished staff, led by President Jeff Alexander, for facilitating all that takes place at Symphony Center and beyond. The efforts of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association affirm that classical music is alive and well and will be for the foreseeable future. As you review this report, I urge you to notice the many ways in which the CSOA touches lives, offering inspiration through extraordinary musical performances.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

dear friends, The Chicago Symphony Orchestra demonstrated its impact as an international cultural icon during its 128th season. Under the artistic leadership of Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti, the Orchestra presented 25 weeks of subscription concerts that called attention to music representing historic events, modern masterworks and pillars of the symphonic canon. With the support of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association—the parent organization of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Chorus, Symphony Center Presents, Negaunee Music Institute, Civic Orchestra of Chicago and the Symphony Center complex—over 363 concerts and events were presented, enriching the lives of millions of people throughout Chicago and around the world. For the opening concerts at Orchestra Hall, Riccardo Muti selected Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 13 (Babi Yar) and Hindemith’s powerful Mathis der Maler Symphony—poignant choices that set the tone for a season that offered abundant opportunities for both reflection and inspiration. There were celebrations of the triumph of the human spirit through the transformative power of music throughout the season, but most visibly with A Time for Reflection—A Message of Peace. This series of fall programs commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Armistice that ended World War I, and included the world premiere of Bruno Mantovani’s Threnos as well as performances of Verdi’s Requiem the week leading up to Veterans Day. Other programmatic choices beautifully displayed the signature nuance and depth for which the CSO–Muti combination is so admired. These included performances of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade; American composer William Schuman’s Symphony No. 9; Respighi’s Pines of Rome; the world premiere of James Stephenson’s Bass Trombone Concerto performed by Orchestra member Charles Vernon; and concertos performed by CSO piccolo Jennifer Gunn and concertmaster Robert Chen. In addition to their aforementioned performances of Verdi’s Requiem and Babi Yar, the Chicago Symphony Chorus, led by Duain Wolfe in his 25th season as its director, was featured in moving performances of Mahler’s Third Symphony, Mozart’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah and the magnificent season finale, Verdi’s Aida. In addition to spectacular concerts at Symphony Center, the Orchestra expanded its reputation nationally and internationally on two tours. On January 15, 2019, Maestro Muti and the CSO embarked for Asia on the Orchestra’s 61st international tour, which included concerts in Taipei, Taiwan; Shanghai and Beijing, China; and Tokyo and Osaka, Japan. The five concerts in Tokyo included two special performances of Verdi’s Requiem. From February 25

to March 3, 2019, the Orchestra and Muti traveled to Florida to present four concerts in West Palm Beach, Miami, and Naples. Between concerts on both tours, members of the Orchestra performed in schools, community centers, and hospitals with the support of the Negaunee Music Institute. We are so pleased that the Orchestra was again able to serve as a cultural ambassador for the city of Chicago in this way. This season also included standout performances by artists with whom the CSO has had long and meaningful relationships. In late October, Bernhard Haitink, who was the Orchestra’s Principal Conductor from 2006-10 and who was soon to celebrate his ninetieth birthday, led memorable performances of Bruckner’s Sixth Symphony. Next, the Orchestra’s ninth music director, Daniel Barenboim, made his long-awaited return to the Orchestra Hall podium to conduct Smetana’s Má vlast—a work he had not previously performed in its entirety with the CSO. In June, Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma gave a fantastic performance of Bach’s Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello to some 22,000 people at Millennium Park as part of his international Bach Project. The Negaunee Music Institute at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra began celebrations for two very special centennials this season. In honor of the 100-year legacy of the CSO’s prestigious training orchestra for young professional musicians, the annual Concert for Chicago featured a side-by-side performance of CSO and Civic Orchestra of Chicago members on the Pritzker Pavilion stage in Millennium Park. The CSO also marked 100 years of its series of concerts for young people with expanded school and community partnerships as well as free concert tickets and bus transportation for 14, 565 CPS students. NMI touched the lives of more than 200,000 people of all ages and backgrounds through its many programs in service of its mission to share the musical resources of the CSO with the broader community. The Symphony Center Presents series attracted enthusiastic audiences with its range of concerts performed by exceptional soloists and ensembles. Marking its 25th season, the SCP Jazz series commissioned three new works as a symbol of its influence within the jazz community. SCP programs were also a critical part of the Armistice celebration with performances of “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band; two piano recitals featuring works composed in response to war; the Soweto Gospel Choir in Songs of the Free; and a world premiere of an SCP commission by contemporary ragtime pianist Reginald Robinson. In addition to Daniel Barenboim’s highly anticipated return to conduct the CSO, he also brought the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra to Chicago for a special concert. The SCP Chamber Music and Orchestras series welcomed outstanding artists—from Anne-Sophie Mutter to Evgeny Kissin—and ensembles— from the Czech Philharmonic to the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra—for remarkable performances. The SCP series greatly enhanced the musical opportunities for Chicago audiences with the excellence and diversity of its programming. The CSOA is profoundly grateful to the Members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and for the steadfastness and overwhelming support of our Trustees, Governing Members, donors, sponsors, volunteer associations and staff members. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is one of the world's greatest cultural treasures and will be for many years to come.

TREASURER’S REPORT

The Association’s financial results for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2019, reflect the continued pursuit of our mission—to enrich, inspire and transform lives through music, community engagement and education—locally, nationally and internationally. Doing so at the extraordinary level of artistry for which the Chicago Symphony Orchestra is world-renowned requires significant financial resources, which must be carefully and responsibly managed. This responsibility extends far beyond the year-to-year annual operating budgets, to the long-term financial health and sustainability of our beloved orchestra. The orchestra work stoppage that lasted for seven weeks of the season had a significant impact on our financial results for the year. The cancellation of 50 paid performances contributed to a $5 million decline in operating revenues versus last year. These revenue reductions were mostly offset by lower expenses and increased contributed support. Annual philanthropic support for the CSO increased 3% over last year to $25.3 million. The result is an operating deficit which increased by $200,000 to $1.1 million for the year ended June 30, 2019. We continue to work toward sustainable break-even operating results over the next several years in support of our long-term strategic plan. The Association’s balance sheet remains strong. Endowment and other investment assets increased to $385 million at year end. We continue to reduce our debt through scheduled repayments. Our net assets at June 30, 2019, stand at $267 million. With a difficult year now behind us, we look forward with renewed optimism to a more financially secure future for the CSO, beginning with an amazing 2019/20 season just getting underway. As always, we appreciate the support of our many loyal donors and patrons. Coupled with the incredible talent and commitment of our Orchestra members, together we can ensure that the Chicago Symphony Orchestra remains a world-class ensemble for generations to come.

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS A TIME FOR REFLECTION—A MESSAGE OF PEACE This season, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association presented A Time for Reflection—A Message of Peace, a series of programs and special events at Symphony Center and across Chicago that explored themes of peace and reflection and commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Armistice that ended World War I (November 11, 1918). The focal point was a set of CSO subscription concerts led by guest conductor Marin Alsop in October. The program included the world premiere of Threnos, a work by French composer Bruno Mantovani, commissioned by the Orchestra and the Pritzker Military Foundation, as well as works by composers who were active during World War I and World War II. Other programs in this series included two off-site vocal recitals at the Pritzker Military Museum & Library and Mayne Stage with singers from Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center performing World War I–era songs; a free Symphony Center Presents Special Concert of “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band; and a companion exhibit curated by the Rosenthal Archives of the CSO in collaboration with the Pritzker Military Museum & Library on display in the Rotunda at Symphony Center from October 2 through November 18. All of these programs were presented with generous leadership support from Colonel (IL) Jennifer N. Pritzker, IL ARNG (Retired), Founder and Chair, Pritzker Military Museum & Library, through the Pritzker Military Foundation.

In addition to these programs commemorating the Armistice, the CSOA continued this theme of reflection and peace with additional concerts throughout the 2018/19 season: •  Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 13 (Babi Yar), a work that pays tribute to the 100,000 victims of the World War II massacre at Babi Yar.

•  Nielsen’s The Inextinguishable Symphony, written during the early years of World War I.

General of Italy and the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago, the CSOA presented special events to inform audiences about this episode in Italy’s history, including a companion photo exhibit and preconcert conversation with U.S. Bureau Chief of La Repubblica Federico Rampini and Professor of History at Loyola University Anthony Cardoza. The performance and special events were attended by Italian Ambassador to the U.S. Armando Varricchio and recognized by Italian President Sergio Mattarella.

•  Mozart’s Requiem, part of a program that included the CSO’s first performance of American composer William Schuman’s Ninth Symphony (Le fosse Ardeatine), which was inspired by the composer’s visit to one of Italy’s most significant World War II memorial sites. In collaboration with the Consulate

In addition to these CSO Main series concerts, several Symphony Center Presents (SCP) concerts and related events also explored this theme of peace and reflection (please see pages 28–29 for more information on these programs).

•  Verdi’s Requiem, a series of performances that anticipated Veterans Day as well as the 100th anniversary of the World War I Armistice on November 11, 2018.

In addition to Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti’s ten weeks of subscription programs with the Orchestra, notable conductors returned to Orchestra Hall this season. In October, Bernard Haitink, former principal conductor of the CSO from 2006 to 2010, returned to Symphony Center for the first time since 2016 to lead the Orchestra in stellar performances of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 6 and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2 featuring Paul Lewis. These concerts with the CSO marked Haitink’s only concert engagement in the United States in the 2018/19 season, during which he celebrated his 90th birthday and announced that he would officially retire from conducting, after a career spanning 65 years, on September 6, 2019. The CSO was also pleased to welcome its ninth music director (1991–2006) Daniel Barenboim back to the Orchestra Hall podium for the first time in twelve years. He led the Orchestra in three outstanding performances of Smetana’s Má vlast, a work he neither performed nor recorded in its entirety with the CSO during his tenure as music director. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is grateful to Sage Foundation, Melissa Sage Fadim, for its generous support of these concerts. The CSO welcomed the debuts of a number of acclaimed guest conductors including Edward Gardner, Giancarlo Guerrero, Matthew Halls, Thomas Søndergård and Simone Young. Several guest artists made their CSO debuts this season including pianist Nicholas Angelich, tenor Piotr Beczała, pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk, baritone Joshua Hopkins, bass Mika Kares, contralto Sara Mingardo, bass Alexey Tikhomirov, sopranos Benedetta Torre and Vittoria Yeo and guitarist Pablo Sáinz Villegas. The newly established Grainger Fund for Excellence supported the appearances of a number of outstanding guest artists in the 2018/19 season including pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk, soprano Erin Wall, baritone Thomas Hampson, pianist Nicholas Angelich and mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato. In December, the CSO released its ninth recording with Riccardo Muti on its own CSO Resound label. Riccardo Muti Conducts Italian Masterworks features a selection of works by 19th century Italian composers Verdi, Puccini, Mascagni and Boito, whose works epitomize one of the most important periods of Italian opera. The works were recorded live in Orchestra Hall in June 2017 during the final concert of the CSO’s 126th season and feature the Chicago Symphony Chorus as well as bass Riccardo Zanellato and the Chicago Children's Choir. Since its release on December 10, 2018, this CSO Resound title has sold 2,412 CDs (467 of which were sold at The Symphony Store) as well as 511 full album digital downloads.

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

The CSO celebrated a historic collaboration in May when, for the first time, it was joined on stage by dancers from The Joffrey Ballet under the baton of Matthias Pintscher. This electrifying collaboration included a world premiere, commissioned ballet, Bliss! by Stephanie Martinez, set to Stravinsky’s Dumbarton Oaks Concerto, and the ballet Commedia by internationally acclaimed choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, set to Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association gratefully acknowledges its Patrons Circle—the Walter E. Heller Foundation, in honor of Alyce DeCosta, Allstate Insurance Company, Megan and Steve Shebik, William and Elisabeth Adams, John and Dora Aalbregtse and Joyce Chelberg—whose generous support made this collaboration possible.

bridge gaps between people, create community and inspire and transform lives. With the support of CSO Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti, this core belief has sparked a variety of programs both within and outside Symphony Center involving musicians from the CSO and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago as well as the programs of the CSO’s Negaunee Music Institute. Yo-Yo Ma leaves a profound mark on the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association as a performer, educator and humanitarian who has inspired and influenced millions. The positive impact of his creative leadership will be felt for decades to come.

Several of this season’s programs featured outstanding solo performances by some of the CSO’s own musicians. In November, CSO Concertmaster Robert Chen led his fellow Orchestra members in a delightful all-Mozart program featuring some of the composer’s most popular music. Chen and CSO Principal Flute Stefán Ragnar Höskuldsson were each featured in one of the composer’s concertos. In June, The Edward F. Schmidt Family Commissioning Fund supported the CSO commission and world premiere of James Stephenson’s Bass Trombone Concerto featuring Charles Vernon, a member of the world-famous Chicago Symphony Orchestra brass section. This program also included the CSO’s Jennifer Gunn performing piccolo concertos by Vivaldi and Ken Benshoof.

Maestro Muti closed the season with three highly anticipated performances of Verdi’s Aida with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and a cast of distinguished soloists, including Krassimira Stoyanova in the title role (replaced in one performance by Elaine Alvarez), Francesco Meli as Radamès, and Anita Rachvelishvili as Amneris. The three spectacular concert performances were greeted by a hugely enthusiastic audience. These concerts were made possible through the generous support of the Aida Patrons Circle: Zell Family Foundation, Margot and Josef Lakonishok, Theckla Family Fund, Randy L. and the late Melvin R. Berlin, Julie and Roger Baskes, Nancy and Sanfred Koltun, Marion A. Cameron, Daniel Fischel and Sylvia Neil, Sue and Melvin Gray, Pamela Kelley Hull and the late Roger B. Hull, Sandra and Earl Rusnak, Jr., Anonymous, Jared Kaplan and Maridee Quanbeck, Chet Gougis and Shelley Ochab and Ling Z. and Michael C. Markovitz.

On June 20, 2019, Yo-Yo Ma performed a free concert for more than 20,000 people at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park. As part of the worldwide tour of his Bach Project, Ma gave a performance of all six of Bach’s solo cello suites. This concert was generously sponsored by Judson and Joyce Green with major support provided by Randy L. and Melvin R. Berlin, Rosemarie and Dean L. Buntrock, The Negaunee Foundation, Sylvia Neil and Dan Fischel, The Theckla Fund, Helen Zell and an Anonymous Donor.

The occasion marked the conclusion of Ma’s role as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant, a position he has held since December 14, 2009. With the visionary and generous support of the Greens, this tailor-made position was created to deepen the Orchestra’s engagement with the Chicago community and to nurture the legacy of the CSO while supporting a new generation of musicians. Ma has served as a catalyst in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association’s continued commitment to the belief that music can

To celebrate the Chicago Symphony Chorus, the League of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association presented its annual Endowed Concert Reception, following the June 23 performance of Aida, through the generous support of its members and other CSOA donors. Jeff Alexander, president of the CSOA, honored Chorus Director Duain Wolfe for 25 years of stellar leadership of the Chicago Symphony Chorus. Alexander commended Wolfe for his more than 150 programs at both Orchestra Hall and at the Ravinia Festival.

SPOTLIGHT ON PHILANTHROPY: VOLUNTEER GROUPS The Chicago Symphony Orchestra was founded through the generosity of some of Chicago’s most successful civic leaders who believed the arts to be central to the life of the city. Today, philanthropy continues to play a critical role in the success of the Orchestra and its service to Chicago communities. We are grateful to the many individuals, philanthropic foundations and government agencies as well as corporate partners whose support make the work of the CSOA possible. During the 2018/19 season, a total of 10,247 donors contributed over $25 million in direct operational support to the CSOA. This included more than $4.1 million in corporate sponsorships, partnerships and in-kind support and almost $2.3 million in grants from philanthropic foundations and government agencies. Of the over 10,000 donors, 9,302 contributed to unrestricted support, 2,619 for the first time. In total, the CSOA raised $40.9 million in current and future contributed revenues, which includes gifts to the CSOA’s endowment and other investment funds.

GOVERNING MEMBERS

The CSOA’s oldest philanthropic society. The Governing Members welcomed 33 new members in the 2018/19 season, bringing total membership to 495. Throughout the season, members enjoyed ten Interactive Intermissions in Grainger Ballroom; two GM post-concert receptions featuring guest conductors and musicians, including CSO musicians and members of The Joffrey Ballet, as well as two GM Behind the Curtain events. In November 2018, the Governing Members Behind the Curtain event featured the music, food and wine of Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi. The evening was highlighted by special guests Ron Merlino of Music Vine Performing Arts & Wine Consulting, Chicago Symphony Chorus Director and Conductor Duain Wolfe and Chicago Symphony Chorus members Leah Dexter, Tasha Koontz, Douglas Peters and Aaron Short.

THE WOMEN’S BOARD

A group of dynamic women leaders producing fundraising events and activities to benefit the CSO. In addition to its very successful Symphony Ball event in September 2018, the Women’s Board also hosted several Prelude events throughout the season, in which the group discussed the works and composers of that evening’s concert.

THE LEAGUE

The CSOA’s largest volunteer group; raising funds, supporting education programs and promoting audience development. The League welcomed ten new members in the 2018/19 season, bringing its ranks to 250 strong. In addition to their Fall in Love with Music event, which exceeded its fundraising goal, and their Endowed Concert Reception, members also enjoyed three Area Salons featuring CSO and Civic Orchestra musicians. Mimi Duginger completed her fourth and final year as President of the League. We are grateful to her for her leadership.

OVERTURE COUNCIL

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

JAZZ SERIES This season marked the 25th anniversary of the Symphony Center Presents Jazz series. Established in 1994, the ten-concert series is known for presenting jazz’s most acclaimed and innovative artists. This season was no exception, with performances by Ahmad Jamal, Jon Faddis, Branford Marsalis, Joshua Redman and Nicholas Payton. In addition, several artists made their SCP Jazz series debuts: clarinetist and saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera, pianist Alfredo Rodríguez and jazz vocalists Will Downing, Nona Hendryx and Quiana Lynell. This anniversary season also featured three commissions. A February concert featured Israel-born clarinetist and saxophonist Anat Cohen and her Tentet in a co-commission of the SCP Jazz series and Carnegie Hall that showcased a concerto for solo clarinet and ensemble composed by Cohen’s longtime colleague Oded Lev-Ari. In May, MacArthur Fellow and pianist Jason Moran returned to Symphony Center for a Jazz series premiere performance of Two Wings: The Music of Black America in Migration. For this ambitious project, Moran and his wife, mezzo-soprano Alicia Hall Moran, wove together a broad spectrum of musical styles to tell Chicago’s story of the African-Americans who relocated from the South and how their journey shaped American culture. The program prominently featured young musicians from the Kenwood Academy Jazz Band and String Orchestra. The third commission of the season was part of the CSOA’s overall season theme of reflection and peace. SCP Jazz commissioned contemporary ragtime pianist and MacArthur Fellow Reginald Robinson to create a tribute to James Reese Europe, whose 369th Regiment “Hellfighters” first brought black American music to France during World War I. Along with performances, the Jazz series provides educational opportunities for Chicago-area students to attend performances and learn directly from jazz legends and innovators. This season guest artists including Reginald Robinson, Jason Moran and Jon Faddis visited Chicago high school jazz combos and led master clinics for collegiate jazz students, while others participated in pre- and post-concert conversations with students from the Jazz Institute of Chicago. The CSOA is grateful for continued sponsorship from Dan J. Epstein, Judy Guitelman and the Dan J. Epstein Family Foundation to make these engaging events possible.

Highlights included debuts by Beatrice Rana, performing Chopin, Ravel and Agosti’s virtuosic arrangement of Stravinsky’s The Firebird, and Behzod Abduraimov, who performed a program of well-known works by Prokofiev and Liszt. A program dedicated to works linked to World War I by composers including Scriabin, Szymanowski, Debussy, Bridge and Hindemith was performed by pianist Cedric Tiberghein as part of the CSOA’s overall season theme of peace and reflection. Austrian pianist Rudolf Buchbinder gave an unforgettable close to the 2018/19 Symphony Center Presents Piano season, with works by Haydn and Beethoven, plus Schubert’s final, majestic sonata. The CSOA is grateful to Life Trustee Tom Sheffield for generously sponsoring Buchbinder’s appearance this season.

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

SPECIAL CONCERTS Symphony Center Presents also featured special concerts throughout the season. In addition to leading the CSO in a series of concerts in November, former CSO Music Director Daniel Barenboim also led his West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, founded with Edward Said in 1999 to promote understanding between Arabs and Israelis, in Strauss’ Don Quixote and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5. This performance was made possible through generous sponsorship by CSOA Life Trustee Ling Z. and Michael C. Markovitz and past CSOA Board Chair Bill and Jan Jentes and the Jentes Family Foundation. Also in November, Grammy Award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir came to Symphony Center for a performance of songs that celebrated the centenary of Nelson Mandela’s birth as well as international gospel classics, including the choir’s world-renowned interpretation of Amazing Grace and an unforgettable version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. In February, we celebrated the Chinese New Year at Symphony Center’s fifth annual concert featuring the internationally renowned China National Peking Opera Company and the spectacular Hubei Chime Bells National Chinese Orchestra. With special appearances by Peking opera superstars Yu Kuizhi and Li Shengsu, the China National Peking Opera Company presented a dazzling combination of vocal artistry, costumes and acrobatics in three classic scenes. The Hubei Chime Bells National Chinese Orchestra opened the concert in a program of works that honor centuries-old musical traditions, performed on exact replicas of the ancient Imperial Bells of China. This performance was generously sponsored by Ling Z. and Michael C. Markovitz.

CSO AT THE MOVIES During the 2018/19 season, the popular CSO at the Movies series included performances of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and North by Northwest, led by Richard Kaufman, as well as special performances of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, led by Emil De Cou, music director of the Pacific Northwest Ballet, and featuring the Women of the Chicago Symphony Chorus. SEASON HIGHLIGHTS MUSICNOW During its 21st season, MusicNOW, the CSOA’s nationally recognized and critically acclaimed new music series, introduced New York-based artist Missy Mazzoli, the CSO’s recently appointed Mead Composer-in-Residence, who curated three performances at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance. Mazzoli, whose two-year appointment by Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti began July 1, 2018, and runs through June 30, 2020, outlined three goals for her first MusicNOW season: spotlight composers new to the series, focus on Chicago composers and promote the work of female composers. The 2018/19 MusicNOW season kicked off on October 22 with the U.S. premieres of Australian composer Kate Moore’s Synaesthesia Suite, composed for violin and an automated track of a synthesized violin and performed by CSO Associate Concermaster Stephanie Jeong; Canadian composer Nicole Lizée’s Isabella Blow at Somerset House, inspired by the British fashion magazine editor; Andrew Hamilton’s Music for Roger Casement, a tribute to the Irish revolutionary; and American composer Judd Greenstein’s Octet 1979, scored for string quartet with a recorded track of four vintage synthesizers manufactured in the year of the composer’s birth. In November, Mazzoli presented a concert with music by four rising-star composers with Chicago roots—Suzanne Farrin, Morgan Krauss, Drew Baker and Sky Macklay—as well as Icelandic composer Daniel Bjarnason, all exploring the sonic possibilities of traditional classical instruments. CSO viola Weijing Wang was featured in Farrin’s Uscirmi di braccia (“leave my arms”) as part of a collection of “songs without words” based on sonnets by Petrarch. Krauss’ destroy the middle featured frenetic punctuated sounds over soft, sustained tones for oboe, clarinet and piano. Baker’s Charon transported the listener on an ethereal journey like its mythological namesake. Macklay’s Many Many Cadences explored musical humor for string quartet. The concert concluded with Bjarnason’s three-movement Bow to String with CSO Cello Katinka Kleijn as soloist. The MusicNOW series finale, in May, offered elements of improvisation, open scoring and spontaneity by three brilliant composers, Julius Eastman, Meredith Monk and Jessie Montgomery. Receiving their world premiere at this concert were new arrangements of Julius Eastman’s Joy Boy, by Shelly Washington, and Gay Guerrilla, arranged by Jessie Montgomery, as well as Meredith Monk’s Passage and What Does It Mean?, arranged by Missy Mazzoli herself. Jessie Montgomery’s Break Away was also performed, which called on musicians to play with and “break away” from the score, making each performance unique. The CSOA is grateful for the generous support of MusicNOW sponsors: the Irving Harris Foundation, the Sally Mead Hands Foundation, the Julian Family Foundation, The Elizabeth Morse Charitable Trust, Cindy Sargent and the Zell Family Foundation.

CSO IN THE COMMUNITY

In accordance with its mission, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association presents concerts beyond its downtown home of Symphony Center to reach a wide range of communities across Chicagoland.

CONCERT FOR CHICAGO Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra celebrated the start of the season with the annual Concert for Chicago, a free concert in Millennium Park, the ninth time Muti has led community concerts since the start of his tenure in 2010 and the fifth time in Millennium Park. Musicians from the Civic Orchestra of Chicago joined the CSO for a side-by-side performance, with nearly 150 musicians on the stage. This was the first time musicians of both orchestras had appeared on stage together in one performance, drawing an estimated 10,000-plus audience. The concert launched the CSO’s 128th season as well as the centennial season of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, founded during the 1919/20 season by Frederick Stock, the CSO’s second music director. This concert was generously sponsored by the Kenneth C. Griffin Charitable Fund, with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago’s side-by-side performance sponsored by The Elizabeth F. Cheney Foundation, in celebration of the Civic Orchestra’s 2018/19 centennial season.

CSO AT WHEATON COLLEGE The CSO continued its commitment to audiences in Chicago’s western suburbs in 2018/19 with its third annual Wheaton College series performed at the Edman Memorial Chapel. Generously sponsored by the JCS Arts, Health and Education Fund of the DuPage Foundation, this three-concert series has regularly attracted new audiences, giving residents in the western suburbs the opportunity to experience one of the world’s greatest orchestras in an outstanding concert venue. Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård led the first concert in November, which paired Rachmaninov’s First Symphony and Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto featuring pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk in his CSO debut. In March, James Feddeck, winner of the prestigious Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award, returned to conduct the CSO in a program featuring pianist Nicholas Angelich. To conclude the season, Riccardo Muti conducted a program of dramatic and evocative works by Bizet, Respighi and Berlioz featuring mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato.

ALL-ACCESS CHAMBER MUSIC The CSO’s All-Access Chamber Music series featured CSO musicians in self-organized, small ensembles performing their favorite chamber music works. The series aims to present music across Chicago by welcoming audiences to Symphony Center as well as neighborhood venues. 2018/19 season concerts included performances at the Columbus Park Refectory and the Beverly Arts Center. All concerts are free and have been since the series began. The All-Access Chamber series is generously underwritten by an anonymous donor.

NEGAUNEE MUSIC INSTITUTE AT THE CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA The Negaunee Music Institute at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (Institute) serves as the education and community engagement department of the CSOA, reaching more than 200,000 people in Chicago and across the world each year. The Institute connects people and their communities to the extraordinary musical resources of the CSO. Programming demonstrates the commitment of the CSOA to educate young audiences, train young musicians and provide broad access to the Orchestra through events that are offered free of charge or at a low cost. Originally called the Institute for Learning, Access and Training when it was established in 2008, the department was renamed Negaunee Music Institute when the CSOA received a generous gift from the Negaunee Foundation in 2014 to endow its programs. The CSOA is grateful to Richard Colburn and the Negaunee Foundation, and to Judson and Joyce Green for their exceptional support of the Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant position held by Yo-Yo Ma from December 2009 to June 2019.

CIVIC ORCHESTRA OF CHICAGO 2018/19 marked the 100th season of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. Founded during the 1919/20 season by the CSO’s second music director, Frederick Stock, the Civic Orchestra has trained over 7,000 young musicians while presenting free concerts at Symphony Center and in communities throughout Chicagoland. To celebrate the centennial, the Civic opened its season with a side-by-side concert with the CSO in Millennium Park conducted by Riccardo Muti. Throughout the season a series of special concerts marked Civic’s historic milestone with banner programming including a performance of Mahler’s Sixth Symphony conducted by CSO Sir Georg Solti Conducting Apprentice Erina Yashima; Janáček's Sinfonietta, led by CSO guest conductor Edward Gardner and featuring a brass choir comprised of Civic alumni; the world premiere of a Civic co-commissioned concerto for percussion and orchestra by Chris Cerrone featuring Third Coast Percussion as soloists (an ensemble with two members who are Civic alumni) conducted by Ken-David Masur; and a season finale collaboration with the Ryan Opera Center at the Lyric Opera of Chicago featuring the full company of 12 singers under the direction of Michael Christie. The CSOA thanks The Elizabeth F. Cheney Foundation for its sponsorship of the 2018/19 Civic Centennial season and special opening concert.

On June 27, following a three-year search process, the CSOA announced the appointment of Ken-David Masur as Civic Orchestra Principal Conductor. Maestro Masur, who was recently appointed as music director of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, begins his post with Civic at the start of the 2019/20 season.

CIVIC ORCHESTRA (continued) The Civic Orchestra deepened its commitment to mentoring young musicians and serving communities across the city by presenting special projects including the fifth annual Bach Marathon, during which chamber ensembles performed J.S. Bach’s six Brandenburg Concertos at food pantries and Fourth Presbyterian Church; a day-long workshop of coachings and side-by-side rehearsal with young musicians from three community youth orchestras operated by The People’s Music School, Sistema Ravinia and the Chicago Metamorphosis Orchestra Project; and Civic chamber ensembles performed over 25 concerts in neighborhood venues such as the National Museum of Mexican Art, Indian Boundary Park and the Zhou B Art Center. Fifteen Civic musicians were appointed as fellows and received additional artistic and professional development that enhanced their membership in the full orchestra. Over the course of the season, these fellows participated in numerous workshops addressing topics such as grant writing, community engagement project design, interactive performance and collaborative composition. Read about the fellows’ myriad activities on the blog they co-author, civicfellows.org. Major funding for the Civic Orchestra and Fellows program is generously provided by The Julian Family Foundation.

CSO SIR GEORG SOLTI CONDUCTING APPRENTICE In September 2015, a jury headed by Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti unanimously chose Erina Yashima as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s third Sir Georg Solti Conducting Apprentice. For her apprenticeship, which began officially in February of 2016, Yashima spent at least ten weeks each season studying with and assisting Muti during his Chicago residencies in addition to conducting and providing artistic insight to the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. While initially a two-year position, in April 2018, Muti announced the extension of Yashima’s position for another season. In April 2019, the Philadelphia Orchestra announced Yashima’s appointment as assistant conductor. In this role, she will serve as cover conductor and provide assistance to its music director, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and guest conductors. Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association are grateful for her service and wish Erina Yashima well in her ongoing artistic endeavors.

NEGAUNEE MUSIC INSTITUTE INITIATIVE FOR A MORE PEACEFUL CHICAGO For the second consecutive season, the Initiative for a More Peaceful Chicago engaged people on Chicago's South Side who have been impacted by gun violence. In partnership with the support group Purpose Over Pain and during ten-day residencies in December and June, guest teaching artists Sara Lee and Rex Horn alongside the Civic Fellows worked with 18 parents who created original songs of tribute. These songs were performed live at St. Sabina Church in Chicago’s Auburn-Gresham neighborhood. Professional recordings, lyrics and photos for each tribute can be heard and seen on notesforpeace.org. On May 6, for the tenth time since becoming CSO Zell Music Director, Riccardo Muti visited a Chicago-area juvenile prison to share music with incarcerated youth. Accompanied by mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato and CSO musicians John Bruce Yeh and Cynthia Yeh, Maestro Muti introduced the youth to a wide range of operatic and instrumental music. The CSOA is grateful to Megan and Steve Shebik for their generous support of this initiative.

NEGAUNEE MUSIC INSTITUTE CSO SCHOOL AND FAMILY CONCERTS Like the Civic Orchestra, the CSO’s concert series for children celebrated its centennial season in 2018/19 with special programming for young audiences, pre-K through high school. On November 28 and 29, led by Edwin Outwater, the legacy of the CSO took center stage in a program that explored how the legendary orchestra has developed its sound over the last 128 seasons. On November 30 and 31, students grades K-5 and families with children were treated to Benjamin Britten’s iconic The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, which was brought to life by the comedic genius of actors from Chicago’s own The Second City. To conclude the series, guest conductor Thomas Wilkins led four performances of one of the CSO’s calling cards—Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition. As part of the celebration, a new Chicago Public Schools free ticket and transportation program was introduced for its matinee concerts for school groups. The CSO’s youngest audiences enjoyed performances of Once Upon a Symphony, including a remount of The Ugly Duckling and a new production, The Boy and the Violin. Developed in collaboration with Chicago Children’s Theatre, OUAS weaves together live music performed by members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, vivid storytelling, sets, costumes and images to create a unique and magical overture to classical music. CSO School and Family Concerts are made possible by the support of Allstate Insurance Company, an anonymous donor, John Hart and Carol Prins and Michael and Linda Simon.

CHICAGO YOUTH IN MUSIC FESTIVAL Each season the Institute presents the Chicago Youth in Music Festival, which celebrates and supports young musicians who are passionate about orchestras. The 2019 Festival brought together young musicians from ten partner organizations for inspirational experiences led by Civic musicians and guest artists. On February 8, students from five CPS high school orchestra programs convened on Orchestra Hall stage for a clinic led by Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras Associate Conductor Terrance Gray and the Civic Orchestra. The following week on February 16, over 75 young musicians representing three community youth orchestras (The People’s Music School, Sistema Ravinia and Chicago Metamorphosis Orchestra Project) convened for a day of coachings and side-by-side rehearsal with the Civic Orchestra, led by CYSO Music Director Allen Tinkham.

CRAIN-MALING FOUNDATION CSO YOUNG ARTISTS COMPETITION On February 23, four extraordinary soloists competed in the Crain-Mailing Foundation CSO Young Artists Competition, presented by the League of the CSOA, for a chance to perform with the CSO during a 2019/20 school concert. Each soloist performed a movement of a concerto with the Civic Orchestra led by Andrew Grams, and, following deliberation by an esteemed panel of judges, Rosie Wang, flute, was announced as the winner.

SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS During the 2018/19 season, the Institute engaged in partnerships with approximately 60 school and community organizations across greater Chicago, building an understanding about classical music, nurturing relationships with the Orchestra and responding to the unique needs of Chicago communities. Many of the Institute’s partnerships support music education in Chicago Public Schools, from elementary through high school. Through Connect partnerships, teachers from ten CPS schools participated in workshops during which they developed curricula inspired by repertoire from the March 2019 CSO school concert, “Flash Back, Flash Forward.” Students explored the history of Chicago and how composers use music to document the past, respond to the present and envision the future. Additionally, the Civic Fellows offered engaging in-school performances that included music by Dvořák, Gershwin and Price, and worked with students to create original musical compositions. In May 2019, all Connect partner schools gathered at Sullivan High School for culminating events that showcased students’ original artwork. The Institute also partnered with six CPS schools and supported their elementary and high school orchestra programs. Each school hosted CSO and Civic musicians for chamber music performances and ensemble sectionals, and students attended open rehearsals and concerts at Symphony Center. The most intensive activity occurred at Amundsen High School. Building on work that began during the 2017/18 season, Civic musicians led string sectionals for the school’s advanced orchestra and joined high school student “mentors” to offer coaching to new string students at neighboring Chappell Elementary School.
