message from the chair

dear cso friends and family, The 125th anniversary season celebration reminded us that we are part of the living history of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The mission to attain the highest standard of artistic excellence, established at the first meeting for the incorporation of The Orchestral Association in 1890, has been the guiding principle of this organization for well over a century and has allowed it to become one of the world’s most respected cultural institutions. As we look back to recognize what was achieved during the CSO’s 125th season, we honor our past and look ahead to what our legacy will be as we approach the next milestone. I commend the work of Riccardo Muti, our outstanding Zell Music Director, whose leadership continues to elevate the artistic level of the Orchestra and inspire audiences worldwide. That inspiration starts with the amazing rapport he has with the members of the Orchestra and translates into their performances. To see this in rehearsal as well as in concert during my first year as Board Chair has deepened my appreciation for this special relationship. From the season’s opening weekend that included our first subscription concert, the sixth annual Concert for Chicago, and a particularly festive Symphony Ball, to the internationally acclaimed performances of Verdi’s Falstaff and a tour of Asia that featured sold-out performances night after night, Muti and the CSO touched hundreds of thousands of listeners during the 125th season. The impact of these musical performances speaks to the relevance of classical music in a modern world and signifies a bright future for the organization.

In an age where we are inundated with content at the push of a button, I think there is no greater luxury than being in the presence of music. The concert experience is intangible by its nature, yet the power of these performances stays with you long after the final bow. I have many meaningful memories from our last season and appreciate having this report to mark the accomplishments of a remarkable anniversary. As you review it, I hope you will share in the recent success of the CSOA.

Helen Zell Chair, Board of Trustees Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association

I would like to thank the many custodians of that future—the CSOA’s Trustees, Governing Members, Women’s Board, the League, and the Overture Council—who steadfastly support the organization and regularly contribute their talents to its success. I am also grateful to the donors, foundations, corporations, sponsors, and patrons who are dedicated to our mission and who are our constant advocates. And to the amazing staff, led by CSOA President Jeff Alexander, who work every day to facilitate all that takes place at Symphony Center and beyond, I extend my heartfelt thanks. All those who support the CSO share a special bond through our mutual appreciation of the unparalleled classical musical experience provided by this Orchestra and enthusiastically make it a priority in our lives. 3

president’s message

dear friends, The 125th anniversary season was an outstanding celebration of the artistic excellence that has long been the hallmark of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Over 400 concerts, community events, educational activities, and special gatherings, as well as a YouTube video with three million views, radio broadcasts, and recordings experienced by people around the world marked this historic year. Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti’s dedication to the symphonic and operatic repertoire performed at the highest artistic level has served as the cornerstone of the CSO’s artistic mission since his tenure began in 2010. Maestro Muti was a great proponent of honoring the anniversary through performances of works that received their world or U.S. premiere by the CSO—included in twenty-five concert programs over the course of the year. Another unmistakable highlight of the season was the presentation of Falstaff, for which The New York Times hailed Maestro Muti as “the King of Verdi” and described the Orchestra as, “a full symphonic ensemble [that] moved like a chamber group.” Maestro Muti also led a three-city U.S. tour in the fall, including the Orchestra’s debut in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and a fivecity and ten-performance tour of Asia in January, marking the eighth tour to the region since 1977 and the 59th international tour since 1892. In addition, the 2015/16 season saw the release of two CSO Resound recordings: Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique with its sequel, Lélio, ou le retour à la vie, narrated by actor Gérard Depardieu, and a digital release of Anthology of Fantastic Zoology by former Mead Composer-in-Residence Mason Bates.

4

We welcomed six new members to the Orchestra in 2015/16, including the Erika and Dietrich M. Gross principal flute chair Stefán Ragnar Höskuldsson, principal bassoon Keith Buncke, violinists Matous Michal and Simon Michal, and violists Sunghee Choi and Youming Chen. Samuel Adams and Elizabeth Ogonek began their three-year terms as Mead Composers-in-Residence by curating four dynamic programs for the MusicNOW series that featured several world premieres and novel uses of digital media. The Negaunee Music Institute arranged more than 125 performances at community sites across the city and internationally as part of the CSO’s 125th anniversary. These free concerts were a highly visible and meaningful way for the CSO family to bring diverse groups together through the common language of music. The Institute and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago continued to benefit from the guidance of Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma. The Symphony Center Presents series drew record-setting audience numbers through its wide-ranging programs performed by visiting soloists and ensembles. The SCP Jazz series repeatedly filled Symphony Center to capacity, while ten piano concerts reached an unprecedented level of ticket sales. In addition, our CSO Main series single ticket revenue surpassed six million dollars—a new record—and 90% of 2015/16 subsribers renewed for the 2016/17 season. Another important milestone was the growth in ticket-buying households from the Latino community by a factor of three, when compared to four years ago, thanks to the efforts of our volunteer Latino Alliance.

Finally, I would like to thank CSOA Board Chair Helen Zell, who has worked tirelessly in her first year as chair to ensure the next 125 years are as successful as the first. Her efforts to ensure the fiscal health of the CSOA, and her personal attention to the cultivation of new board members and donors is already bringing new strength to the organization. In closing, please enjoy this look back at a wonderful year of music making, celebration, and community engagement that helped to make the Chicago Symphony Orchestra the great musical treasure of our city and the world. Sincerely,

Jeff Alexander President Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association

All of our accomplishments are possible because of the inspired dedication, artistry, and skill of our music director, musicians, and staff members, and the support of our Trustees, thousands of loyal donors, sponsors, patrons, and volunteers who are committed to advancing the Orchestra’s mission. We are also grateful to our 2015/16 Global Sponsor, Bank of America, and our Grand Patrons, whose commitment to arts and culture helped make our 125th season one to remember.

in memoriam

Pierre Boulez (March 26, 1925–January 5, 2016) with the death of pierre boulez in January 2016, one of the boldest chapters in the life of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra came to a close. Boulez played a unique and unusually powerful role in Chicago. As the Orchestra’s official conductor emeritus, unofficial éminence grise, and above all, beloved member of the family, his work with our musicians and his presence in our city encompassed so much more than any conventional title could suggest. Boulez would have turned ninety-one on March 26, 2016. In recent years, he had often made it a point to spend his birthday with our orchestra. In 1999, he celebrated the day in Chicago in a most Boulezian way, leading the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in Schoenberg’s formidable Moses and Aron. We all put 2015 on our calendars, hoping to have him back in Chicago to participate in the many activities we had planned for his ninetieth birthday, but by then the man we knew as the very epitome of youthfulness—in the pace of his walk and the speed of his mind, his embrace of the latest in art and technology, his refusal to live in the past—was no longer well enough to make the trip. Boulez first appeared with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in February 1969, conducting music by Debussy, Bartók, Webern, and his teacher Olivier Messiaen. “Boulez firmly believes in the classics of our century,” the Chicago Tribune critic wrote of the concert. “He is also immensely qualified to spread the word, possessing a composer’s mind, a conductor’s savvy, and a poet’s soul.” At the time, Boulez was famous as a revolutionary composer, and by the time he began his annual residencies with the Orchestra in 1991, he was also recognized as one of the most revelatory conductors of our age. In Chicago, Boulez soon became our guide to the modern classics, a restorer of repertory staples, and our prophet of the new. Over the years, Boulez worked with the Civic Orchestra, gave a series of lectures at the Art Institute, appeared on the Orchestra’s new MusicNOW series, and brought the Ensemble Intercontemporain he founded to town—all in addition to his regular appearances with the CSO. In 1991, he began to make recordings with our orchestra—an all-Bartók coupling of the Cantata profana and The Wooden Prince won four Grammy® awards, including Best Classical Album. (Eight of his twenty-six Grammy awards are for discs with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.) He conducted the Orchestra on tour in Japan in 1995, at the Berlin Festtage in 1999, and Cologne in 2000, as well in Carnegie Hall on several occasions. The Chicago Symphony was one of just a

handful of orchestras he conducted on a regular basis, and his close relationship with the Orchestra, which grew and deepened over the years, became one of the high points in his career. This was an orchestra, he openly admitted, that he loved. Boulez made his name as a conductor devoted to the great pioneers of musical modernism—Stravinsky, Bartók, Debussy, Schoenberg—the same composers who were his starting point as a composer. Those figures, along with Ravel and Mahler—a more recent fascination—were the ones he explored in the greatest depth with the Chicago Symphony. But, although we tended to think of Boulez as a specialist, during his Chicago seasons he conducted music by more than thirty composers, including revelatory Mahler (symphonies 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, and 9), blockbuster Berlioz (Romeo and Juliet, complete, and the rarely heard Requiem), what many consider definitive readings of the big Stravinsky ballets, new classics (Berio’s Sinfonia and Ligeti’s Piano Concerto), and operatic landmarks of the twentieth century (Bluebeard’s Castle by Bartók—preserved in a Grammy Award-winning recording— and Moses and Aron). But he also led music by composers not normally linked with his name—Haydn, Schubert, Dukas, Roussel, Szymanowski, Scriabin—and in later years Chicago audiences saw Boulez’s interests move in unexpected directions: he led his first-ever performances of Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass and Bruckner’s Fifth Symphony here, both in 2000. And, of course, he introduced us to composers whose names were brand new to us. It was always our privilege to learn, to explore, and to listen, as he continued to spread the word. Boulez last appeared on the stage of Orchestra Hall to conduct our orchestra and chorus in December 2010. When his doctors would not let him travel all the way to Chicago, programs that he planned and pieces he wanted to revisit had to go on without him. In 2014, A Pierre Dream, a Beyond the Score portrait of Boulez, brought him fleetingly back to us on video—offering reminders of the very sound of his voice, the clarity of his ideas, his wicked humor, his astonishing vision even though his own eyes had begun to fail him. But it is the adventuresome music we chose to play and the unconventional programs we plan, and in the lessons he taught us—to believe in the music of our own time, to embrace what lies over the horizon—that his spirit will long live on in Chicago. csosoundsandstories.org/category/boulez-inmemoriam/ —Phillip Huscher   CSO Program Annotator and Scholar-in-Residence

The first, Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, included a special recording of its sequel Lélio, ou le retour à la vie, narrated by actor Gérard Depardieu. Anthology of Fantastic Zoology by Mason Bates, recorded in 2015 and conducted by Riccardo Muti, was released digitally in 2016 after the conclusion of Bates’ fiveyear tenure as Mead Composer-in-Residence (2010-2015). The week of its release, the album hit No. 1 on the Billboard Classical Albums chart and on iTunes. csosoundsandstories.org/masonbates-anthology-of-fantastic-zoology/

cso & scp special concerts Each season, special concerts at Symphony Center showcase world-renowned guest artists and diverse genres of music. These artists present—and complement—the classical music genre and engage audiences with diverse musical interests.

singer-songwriter lila downs, a multi-Grammy® Awardwinner, performs with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra led by guest conductor Donato Cabrera. In June 2016, Downs performed selections from her 2015 release, Balas y Chocolate (Bullets and Chocolate), as well as traditional selections. csosoundsandstories. org/lila-downs-finds-herself-at-home-in-virtually-any-genre/

A new holiday tradition also began in 2015/16, with the first Merry, Merry Chicago! performances. Guest conductor Stuart Chafetz led this joyous musical celebration designed for audiences of all ages featuring members of the CSO, guest artists The von Trapps, and Chicago’s own Midwest Young Artists: Voices Rising children’s vocal ensemble, directed by Stevi Marks.

During the 2015/16 anniversary season, special performances by pianists Evgeny Kissin and Lang Lang with the CSO were soldout highlights. In September 2015, The National Brass Ensemble, 26 of the finest brass players in America, presented some of the most famous brass repertoire as well as brass-only interpretations of classical favorites. Special guest conductor Riccardo Muti led the ensemble in brass arrangements of Verdi selections on the program.

The 2015/16 season marked the first year of a multi-year partnership with Wheaton College. Legendary Russian conductor Yuri Temirkanov led the CSO in a March 2016 concert featuring pianist Denis Matsuev and repertoire by Brahms and Rachmaninov. Since the CSO’s first concert appearance in Edman Memorial Chapel in 1960, the Orchestra has appeared at the venue more than 10 times, with the most recent appearance taking place in 2010. These 2015/16 concerts were a continuation of three successful years of CSO concerts in DuPage County. cso.org/wheaton

For the second consecutive year, guest artists from China helped Chicago celebrate the Chinese New Year. In a special program held on February 21, 2016, the China Broadcasting Chinese Orchestra (CBCO) led by Music Director Pang Kapang performed both traditional and contemporary music at Symphony Center. 22

Making Music with Riccardo Muti

yo-yo ma visits schurz high school during a day-long arts festival presented by the Civic Orchestra. Through collaborations with the music, dance, English/theater, and visual art departments, as well as the school’s yoga class, Ma and the Civic members infused the school with music as they collaborated on interdisciplinary projects. In the afternoon, students and Civic members showcased their work for an all-school assembly, which was attended by CPS Chief Education Officer Janice Jackson. Later that evening, the Civic Orchestra performed a free concert for the Schurz community in the high school’s historic auditorium. This concert marked the Civic debut of Sir Georg Solti Conducting Apprentice Erina Yashima.

muti leads the civic orchestra of chicago in one of two open rehearsals that occurred during the 2015/16 season. An important component of the Civic Orchestra’s annual activities, open rehearsals with Muti offer musicians a professional orchestral experience under one of the world’s preeminent conductors and music director of the CSO. In addition to these open rehearsals, Civic members also performed eight concerts under the baton of world-renowned guest conductors. The 2015/16 season featured Civic podium appearances by Semyon Bychkov, Sir Andrew Davis, Nicholas Kraemer, and Matthew Aucoin, former CSO Solti Conducting Apprentice.

Civic Orchestra of Chicago Scholarships Civic musicians receive an annual stipend to help offset some of their living expenses during orchestra training. As a special curricular enhancement, eight Civic members participated in the 2015/16 Civic Fellowship program, a rigorous artistic and professional development curriculum that supplements their membership in the full orchestra. Major funding for the Civic Fellowship program is generously provided by The Julian Family Foundation with additional funding from Prince Charitable Trusts. The following donors have underwritten Civic musicians.
