a note from the chair and the president

DEAR FRIENDS, The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association has been making valiant efforts to show that music is alive and well despite the cancellation of concerts since March 12. This publication is one of those endeavors. In lieu of the printed program book you would receive at any of our performances, this e-book was designed to be enjoyed in the safety of your home and to offer a glimpse into the current activities of the CSOA and its musicians. As you will discover in the following pages, there are many ways you can listen to the Orchestra online at cso.org and via broadcast through our wonderful partner, WFMT radio, and enjoy a series of videos created by Members of the Orchestra. This e-book also includes a special message from Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti and a continuation of the series, A Perfect 10, in honor of his tenth season as music director. You will also get a behind-the-scenes look at the Civic Orchestra of Chicago’s 100th Anniversary Concert, which shifted from Orchestra Hall to a virtual performance of Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony and new works commissioned especially for the occasion. In addition, this e-book provides us with the opportunity to recognize our steadfast and growing list of supporters. The generosity of the extended CSOA family is truly inspiring. This spring, we are especially grateful to the many individuals who have contributed to Music Ahead, a challenge grant that matches gifts to the CSOA through June 30. These contributions include gifts from generous patrons who have converted tickets to canceled concerts into donations to the CSOA. Your support plays a vital role in ensuring a strong future for our concerts, educational programs, and community initiatives. In the wake of this global pandemic, we appreciate that music is a balm for the soul now more than ever. We will continue to find new ways to connect and share music until the time when we can have the pleasure of returning to Symphony Center. Until then, we hope that you and your loved ones remain healthy and safe and can use the music and messages of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as a source of inspiration and healing.

a note from riccardo muti zell music director

To the wonderful audience of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, my thoughts continue to be with you at this time when we are all missing the spiritual food of Culture and Music in particular. Through personal experience, I know that music has the ability to bring people together—certainly emotionally and spiritually, if not physically, at this particular time. Although the world is in crisis, we can take comfort in the power of music to help us communicate across borders and express the depths of our humanity. I was pleased to receive news that members of the Orchestra are making music together online from the safety of their individual homes. I understand their desire to play together, even at a distance, because we musicians want to feel that same sense of camaraderie and to share the love that we put into our music making. This speaks to the Greek origin of the word symphony, symphonos—essentially to bring or to play together. This period of darkness shall pass. Until then, I very much look forward to reuniting with you and the Orchestra in person. We will make music again in Chicago and abroad, because a world without music is unimaginable.

U

nexpected is the one word that describes what so many of us have experienced over the last few weeks. As we face the silent and serious threat of COVID-19 in our communities, music remains a source of refuge, enrichment, and joy. Within days of the first cancellations of concerts at Symphony Center in March, special musical messages of support and encouragement appeared on the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s social media channels—all with a hashtag underlining an important truth at a difficult time: # m u s i c c o n n e c t s u s . These musical connections have crossed borders, generations, and points of view to bring us closer virtually while we cannot be together in the concert hall. Soon after the stay-at-home order was issued in Chicago, Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti sent a message to the city and CSO audiences saying, 8 CSO.ORG

My thoughts are with you, who, as all of us in Italy and most of Europe, are living through this time without the spiritual food of Culture in general and of Music in particular. I am certain that we will get through this difficult time, and my wish is that all the citizens of Chicago and our audiences remain optimistic. My thoughts and those of my fellow Italians are with you, remembering that we are all brothers and sisters. Muti has also gone on to inspire and curate programs for a new CSO radio broadcast series From the CSO Archives: Maestro’s Choice— For All Music Lovers in These Difficult Times. Airing each Tuesday evening on WFMT, the series connects listeners with full-length CSO concert performances.

ue Bridge, who serves as president of the League of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association (CSOA), a 200-plus group of men and women whose volunteer service supports programs such as free CSO open rehearsals for senior and community groups, immediately recognized the importance of retaining connections through a shared love of music. “In this exceptional and challenging time, we found ourselves connected through a palpable feeling of loss,” noted Bridge. “Together, we missed the exquisite music of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra that brings such beauty into our lives, and the lives of so many in our community.” Bridge and some of her fellow League members immediately began making personal calls to the full membership of the League of the CSOA. “What we came to understand in those conversations was that this common experience has strengthened a bond among our members as we reached out to one another to share that loss,” said Bridge. “We miss the music that connects us, but we assure each other that we will once again join together in Orchestra Hall to savor every note.”

s the weeks of isolation have continued, personal video messages from musicians of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra have

become a welcome source of respite and comfort. Assistant Principal Cello Kenneth Olsen has participated in three videos, performing Johan Halvorsen’s intensely virtuosic Passacaglia on a Theme by Handel with Assistant Concertmaster Yuan-Qing Yu and an excerpt from J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto no. 3 with his fellow CSO strings. However, the third video message—a performance of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” arranged by Brooklyn Duo with pianist Craig Terry from the Ryan Opera Center at Lyric Opera of Chicago—resonated deeply with online audiences, generating millions of views and more than 5,000 comments of appreciation, gratitude, and joy, including Diane on Facebook, who said, This beautiful, inspired performance exemplifies the power of music to convey love, compassion, strength, and hope. Thank you, Kenneth Olsen and Craig Terry, for sharing your precious gift. We love the CSO and all of its wonderfully talented and dedicated musicians. To date, more than twenty CSO musicians from across the sections of the Orchestra—strings, winds, brass, and percussion—have participated in video performances of works by J.S. and C.P.E. Bach, Beethoven, Gershwin, Mozart, Prokofiev, MAY–JUNE 2020  9

Ravel, Sibelius, Weissenborn, and more. These musical messages have created connections with more than 20,000 new fans on Facebook and thousands of new followers on Instagram in only a matter of weeks. One event in particular that brought the CSO’s Facebook audience together virtually on Easter Sunday, April 12, was a Facebook Premiere presentation of the 2014 performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with Maestro Muti leading the CSO and Chorus and distinguished soloists. During the eighty-minute performance, nearly 3,000 viewers tuned in, some from at least fourteen other countries, including Italy, Romania, and Colombia. The more than 1,400 comments during the live event ranged from gratitude to sheer delight as the performance reached its “Ode to Joy” finale. Manuel Alva called the experience “A gift for the soul!,” and Ely Montero Leyva said “My heart is smiling.” Danielle Findley Reno added, “Me and my nine-year-olds are watching symphony for the first time! It’s absolutely beautiful! Thank you CSO!”

No. 5: Community Engagement

Riccardo Muti has been a lifelong and passionate champion of music’s ability to transcend cultural divides, enact social change, and transform people’s lives. While making plans to assume the post of music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra beginning with the 2010–11 season, Muti formally announced his intention to expand the Orchestra’s presence well beyond Orchestra Hall. “While making great music is at the heart of what we do,” said Muti, “preserving the legacy of symphonic music and providing opportunities for all to have access to the art form are of equal importance.” Over the past ten seasons, Muti has developed programs with the Negaunee Music Institute, the expansive education and community engagement wing of the CSOA. Under his visionary leadership, the institute has deepened the Orchestra’s engagement with communities across the city and abroad while nurturing a new generation of musicians and patrons. In Muti’s words, “In a challenging world, culture is one of the few things we have in our hands to save it.” The CSO’s music director position is endowed in perpetuity by a generous gift from the Zell Family Foundation. concerts for chicago and communit y concerts Riccardo Muti initiated the tradition of beginning the season with a large-scale free concert during his first season as music director. The first Concert for Chicago, on September 19, 2010, introduced Maestro Muti to the city with great fanfare— declared as “Riccardo Muti Day in Chicago” by then Mayor Richard M. Daley, the same day that the Chicago City Council passed a resolution launching Festa Muti, a monthlong festival celebrating his first residency as music director. Riccardo Muti and the CSO share a core belief that music has the power to transform lives and bring people closer together; it is a language that unites us. The tradition of community concerts demonstrates an ongoing commitment to and appreciation for the city of Chicago. Venues have ranged from Millennium Park in the heart of downtown to throughout the greater Chicago area.

On September 19, 2010, Riccardo Muti officially began his tenure as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s tenth music director leading a free concert in Millennium Park’s Pritzker Pavilion before a crowd of more than 25,000 people, starting an annual tradition for the people of Chicago.

The 2011–12 season began with a free community concert at the Apostolic Church of God in the Woodlawn neighborhood of Chicago. A highly attentive crowd of almost 6,000 people—ranging in age from toddler to senior citizen—enjoyed works by Verdi, Ibert, and Tchaikovsky. Muti and the CSO returned to Apostolic Church of God on October 13, 2016, when Muti opened the concert with an invitation to sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” often referred to as the Black National Anthem, performed with the CSO, Chatham Choral Ensemble, and guest vocalists.

“ Let us be a family. . . . We feel your presence here tonight.” —Riccardo Muti On September 18, 2013, Riccardo Muti conducted the CSO; soloists; and a choir made up of members of the Chicago Symphony Chorus, Morton East Choir, and other groups representative of the city and suburbs in selections from Verdi’s La forza del destino and Nabucco, in addition to Brahms’s Second Symphony, at Morton East High School in Cicero.

Lane Tech College Prep High School on Chicago’s North Side shares in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s legacy, as many of its alumni have gone on to become members of the Orchestra. Riccardo Muti conducted community concerts there on November 15, 2017, and September 24, 2019.

engaging incarcer ated youth through music Each season since 2010, Muti has visited a Chicago-area juvenile justice facility to present an interactive recital for incarcerated youth. Maestro Muti’s prison visits have inspired a portfolio of musical projects for the Negaunee Music Institute in partnership with specialists in the field. Since launching these special performances, Muti has visited the Illinois Youth Center in Warrenville, a facility that houses teenage females; the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center on Chicago’s West Side, a facility that holds pre-adjudicated teenage males and females; and the Illinois Youth Center in Chicago, a facility for teenage males. For each visit, Maestro Muti brings with him special guests, including CSO musicians and soloists.

Riccardo Muti and Chicago Symphony Chorus members Elizabeth Gray (seen here) and Sarah Ponder performed opera arias for young women incarcerated at the Illinois Youth Center (IYC) in Warrenville on September 27, 2010. Maestro Muti has returned there many times, and in September 2015, an Evanston-based Juvenile Justice Initiative honored him for his time, efforts, and commitment to young inmates.

Pictured here are CSO Trumpets Mark Ridenour and Tage Larsen, CSO Horn David Griffin, CSO Trombone Michael Mulcahy, and CSO Principal Tuba Gene Pokorny at the Illinois Youth Center–Chicago on September 28, 2014. After the brass quintet finished, Muti and the musicians fielded questions from the audience, which sparked an impromptu rap performance by four of the youth. The evening concluded with a reception that provided time to speak one-on-one with the performers.

After the September 25, 2016, Illinois Youth Center-Chicago recital, bass-baritone Eric Owens, who appeared with Muti, mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, and CSO musicians, told WFMT-FM: “I always carry experiences like this with me. There’s nothing like music to spread love. Music can fill us with hope and vision. I am always happy to be a part of Maestro Muti’s mission to bring music to where the people are.”

“Every time I’ve brought music to the juvenile detention centers or to churches in communities that don’t come to the concert hall, I’ve seen that people receive music with great attention, with great enthusiasm, and with great participation. . . . Sometimes this crowd of people . . . responds to your performance with much more intensity and understanding than the so-called sophisticated audience.” Here Muti shakes the hand of CSO Principal Bass Alexander Hanna on September 24, 2017, performance at the Warrenville Youth Center.

Joined by CSO Piccolo/Flute Jennifer Gunn, Bass Trombone Charles Vernon, and Principal Tuba Gene Pokorny, Maestro Muti presented an informal recital for young men and women at a juvenile justice center on the islet of Nisida, Italy, on January 19, 2020. During his CSO tenure, Muti has made it his mission to bring music to correctional facilities. The program was presented by the Negaunee Music Institute, assisted by the administrative staff of the Teatro di San Carlo. While on tour, musicians of the CSO pair performances in the great concert halls of the world with activities that bring chamber music and master classes into school, hospital, university, and social-service organization settings with the support of the Negaunee Music Institute.

open rehearsals Riccardo Muti has developed a robust program of open rehearsals with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Several times each season, the CSO welcomes guests free of charge to observe the rehearsal process. This is a unique opportunity for students, seniors, and veterans to get a behind-thescenes view of the musicians at work as they prepare for their concerts. With Muti’s encouragement, the number of free CSO open rehearsals has increased with the addition of a series of community open rehearsals, coordinated by the League of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In addition to open rehearsals with the CSO in Chicago and on tour, Muti often conducts rehearsals with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and other youth orchestras. He is passionate about teaching young musicians, having founded the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra in 2004 and the Riccardo Muti Italian Opera Academy in 2015. “ I want to see the moment in the future . . . when [orchestras] do what I’m doing already in rehearsals, which is speaking to both the musicians and the public. That way, the public becomes an essential part of the process.” — Riccardo Muti, The Chicago Maroon

In its second season, the Chicago Symphony Chorus first performed Beethoven’s music—the Ninth Symphony—on October 23 and 24, 1958, under the baton of music director Fritz Reiner. Since then, the ensemble, under the direction of Margaret Hillis and Duain Wolfe, has performed all of Beethoven’s major choral works with the Orchestra, including Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage, Christ on the Mount of Olives, Choral Fantasy, Elegy, Fidelio (shown here in fully staged performances in May 1998), Mass in C major, and the Missa solemnis.

The Chorus has been featured on three recordings of the Ninth Symphony under the batons of Fritz Reiner (1961) and Sir Georg Solti (1972 and 1986), two of the Missa solemnis with Solti (1977) and Daniel Barenboim (1993), and Fidelio under Solti (1979).

With the Berlin Staatskapelle under Barenboim, the Chorus performed the Ninth Symphony in Carnegie Hall on December 17, 2000. Most recently, the ensemble performed in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in Orchestra Hall under music director Riccardo Muti on September 18, 20, 21, and 23, 2014, and at the Ravinia Festival under artistic curator Marin Alsop on July 14, 2018.

ust like that, there were no concerts—no rehearsals, tuxedos, or tuning led by the concertmaster. There were neither program books to hand out nor audience members to peruse the glossy pages. All that remained in Orchestra Hall was the ghost light shining onstage for safety and honoring all past performers in the sacred space. All of this, of course, was caused by the response to the global COVID-19 pandemic and a desire to protect the health and wellbeing of the population. As a precaution, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker announced a ban on all large gatherings beginning March 12. At the time, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s training ensemble, was ready to celebrate its 100th anniversary on March 29, the exact day of its first performance in 1920. would have featured works by CSO Mead Composer-in-Residence Missy Mazzoli as well as Schumann’s Konzertstück for Four Horns, performed by CSO Horns Daniel Gingrich, James Smelser, David Griffin, and Oto Carrillo—all of whom are Civic alumni. The program also would have included Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, which was on the Civic’s inaugural program in 1920. So, without a stage or audience, what is an orchestra to do? A plan was enacted to produce a virtual concert, to debut on social media, on March 29. “We knew we would regret it if we let this date pass without any music to celebrate,” said Jonathan McCormick, director of the CSO’s Negaunee Music Institute, which oversees the Civic Orchestra in addition to all CSO community and education initiatives. “Since we couldn’t be together in Orchestra Hall, we quickly made plans to celebrate the milestone online.” Those plans included a large-scale virtual performance of an excerpt from the final movement of Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony as well as the commissioning of seven world premieres to mark the uniqueness of the situation. The virtual concert also featured introductions from Masur and the CSO horns. “With so many moving parts,” McCormick added, “we had to act quickly. o start, the institute enlisted the help of YouTube artist and influencer Christopher Bill. Best known as the most-subscribed brass musician on YouTube, Bill is a trombonist, arranger, and marketing consultant based outside New York City. His YouTube channel, The Classical Trombone, has amassed

over 45 million views and a following of over 250,000 subscribers. Civic musicians, from their homes, recorded audio and video tracks of the excerpt. The sixty-five musicians created files, which were electronically sent to Bill. “A lot of the work isn’t very exciting,” said Bill from his New York studio. “For example, the first thing I do is convert all the audio and video files to the same format. I make sure they are all labeled the same way, so that when I get into weaving everything together, I’m not searching for each file every time.” After all the files are labeled and organized, Bill prepares the audio tracks before even looking at the video element. “I try to re-create what the orchestra would be doing. I look at a score and find who has the melody and follow them throughout the piece. Then I match articulations and listen for intonation. I use all of this as a guide before audio mixing and tweaking.” Once the audio was finished, with guidance and consultation from CSOA staff, Bill began to piece together the visual component of the concert. “What are the transitions? What’s the pacing? I storyboard the entire thing on a giant dry-erase board in my studio.” To capture the quintessential sound, Bill and the musicians used the 1989 CSO recording of Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, led by its then music director Sir Georg Solti, as inspiration for tempos, character, and the overall sound concept. “When I think about those great orchestras onstage, each individual member doesn’t have a microphone on them. But I essentially do have a mic on each player, so I adjust the audio to re-create that full orchestral sound,” said Bill. Even with some of the nation’s finest young musicians submitting high-quality recordings, it still will

never sound like a live orchestra. But, according to Bill, that’s part of the beauty of a virtual concert. “We decided to leave the sound pretty raw. That is, we didn’t add a lot of reverb [reverberation, or an echo-like effect] or try to make it sound too much like everyone was in a concert hall.” Rather, he aimed to capture the uniqueness of the situation, with “the sound reflecting the musicians, isolated in their living rooms but together in spirit.”

I

n addition to the Tchaikovsky, seven new pieces were commissioned in response to the challenges facing our global community. Taking musical inspiration from the Civic musicians’ individual recordings of Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, the new works were composed by Josh Fink, Nathalie Joachim, Liza Sobel, Ted Moore, Peter S. Shin, Marta Tiesenga, and LJ White. “Jonathan McCormick called and asked if I could compose a piece for the Civic anniversary concert in one week,” said Chicago-based composer Nathalie Joachim. “I laughed and said, ‘No!’ But then we started talking about the existing sound bank of Tchaikovsky recordings as well as the importance of the event—both the anniversary and the newly found world of shelter-at-home. It was exactly the kind of project I wanted to work on, considering my love of electronic music.” Joachim—a Grammy Award–nominated flutist, composer, and vocalist—described the inspiration for her piece, Glitch Oasis, as needing to be reflective of this time. “The moment is interesting to me, since my schedule is normally so exhausting, and now it’s a strange gift to be able to sit still and enjoy time. There’s something beautiful about being still, and I wanted my piece to reflect that.” Right now, so many people are switching into the digital space, and Joachim believes there’s much to be

gained from people’s learning curve in this new medium. “It’s a challenging thing; it can be a painful transition. It’s important to have time to parse this new digital landscape. That’s where the title Glitch Oasis comes from—embracing, honoring, and even enjoying all the technical glitches as they happen in an oasis of this newly found time and space.” The finished piece reflects Joachim’s compositional goal. Her piece sounded digital, but it was all pulled from the Civic musicians’ acoustic classical tracks. Since Tchaikovsky’s Fifth is so well known, she decided to “stay away from the recognizable melody, which led to the inner voices of the work—viola and bassoon excerpts— for example.” While discussing the future of music postquarantine, Joachim championed an important message: “Artists are always at the forefront of bringing society back from troubling times. A lot of important art is being created right now, and I was honored to be a part of that very mission.”

T

he Negaunee Music Institute sees the Civic Orchestra 100th Anniversary Virtual Concert as a case study for what ensembles can do in this new frontier of extended isolation. “There are things you can do in this video format that you cannot do with a live performance,” said Bill. “You can bring together players from all over the world to take part in something creative. Because, as a listener, you know this video means something to these musicians.” This is an opportunity for a bigger discussion about education and access. Joachim believes that “these types of online performances can make our field more adept at reaching audiences in uncommon spaces. We will think creatively and consider all kinds of communities. How can we get our music to these communities? How can our art help carry us forward?

“Many people spend all day looking at a screen—now more than ever—and going to a concert used to be a respite from those devices,” said Joachim about the current virtual landscape of classical music. “Now we are being asked to enjoy music, friends, and family through a screen as well. But it’s actually been rewarding to see how people have handled this transition. And it’s across all genres of people.” Since the Civic Orchestra 100th Anniversary Virtual Concert premiered on Facebook and YouTube on March 29, it has reached over 100,000 people. The video has received floods of accolades and gratitude coming from the thousands of people who reacted to the social media posts. This included a review in the Chicago Tribune by Howard Reich, who wrote that “to see these young artists—each in his or her own home, most wearing Civic Orchestra of Chicago shirts—was to appreciate anew what the music means to these individuals. . . . The music making proved passionate, technically assured, and surprisingly nuanced.” It’s unclear when live music will resume in concert halls. But the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Civic Orchestra are carving new paths in the digital landscape, including performance videos for audiences, practice tips for students, and remote-learning resources for teachers and parents.

“Now is the opportunity for us to be creative and use our art as a catalyst into the digital landscape,” said McCormick. “I am grateful to all of our supporters and musicians for handling this challenge with grace and excellence.” To see the video and learn more about the Negaunee Music Institute’s digital content, visit c s o.o r g/ wat c h .
