The 2020/21 season features music both familiar and new, using melody and rhythm to bring a diverse array of animals, plants and landscapes to life, while also inspiring us to be caretakers of our environment. Come make musical memories that will last a lifetime.

Once Upon a Symphony

AGES 3-5

Saturdays at 10:00 or 11:45 Buntrock Hall, Symphony Center Combining vibrant music played by CSO musicians, storytelling and enchanting visuals for a playful concert experience.

CSO Family Matinees AGES 5-12

3 Saturdays at 11:00 (A) or 12:45 (B) Orchestra Hall, Symphony Center Featuring fun, kid-friendly programs of beloved classical music performed by musicians of the CSO. Produced and presented in collaboration with Chicago Children’s Theatre.

ONCE UPON A SYMPHONY

Goldilocks Three Bears

and the

young Goldilocks stumbles NOV 7 When upon a quaint cottage and goes to explore, little does DEC 12 inside she know it belongs to three and they’re on their JAN 16 bears, way home! Through this story,

children will experience the wide and wonderful world of the forest through Goldilocks’ eyes and playfully explore some of the boundaries and responsibilities that come with growing older.

Produced and presented in collaboration with Chicago Children’s Theatre.

ONCE UPON A SYMPHONY APR 17 MAY 8 MAY 22

The largest animal in the forest, the mighty King Elephant, leads his elephant family to the lake to drink. But when the elephants wade into the lake, they get stuck in the mud and are soon roped by hunters! Who will come to their rescue? Originally from a collection of Indian fables passed down through centuries, this story teaches us that we will find friends—and courage—in unexpected places.

CSO FAMILY MATINEE out of the forest NOV 21 Step and into the meadow

with Peter, the young hero of Prokofiev’s beloved musical tale. This children’s favorite tells the story of a young boy who risks his own safety to protect his dear friends: a duck and a bird. This program, which features the amazing Magic Circle Mime Company, proves that you don’t need to be grown up to discover courage inside yourself!

Discover how members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra can conjure a zoo full of characters in this exciting concert featuring Saint-Saëns’ popular The Carnival of the Animals.

CSO FAMILY MATINEE have MAY 1 Composers long been inspired by

the beauty and power of water. In this program featuring music by Smetana and Britten, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra demonstrates how composers choose to portray a trickling stream, a thundering storm or a crashing wave. This concert will explore the importance of water in the lives of all the world’s creatures.

Come and grow with the CSO! Explore these age-appropriate options to introduce the children in your life to the magic of orchestral music.

Once Upon a Symphony Ages 3–5 Designed for children ages 3–5, Once Upon a Symphony programs feature CSO musicians and introduce young children to the amazing world of classical music. Once Upon a Symphony weaves together live music performed by members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, vivid storytelling, sets, costumes and images to create a unique and magical overture to live musical performances.

Family Matinees Ages 5–12 The CSO Family Matinee series is a great next step for Once Upon a Symphony graduates. These fun and engaging concerts introduce children to the full symphony orchestra and often feature guest artists, dancers or multimedia to complement the music.

Teen Arts Pass (TAP) Ages 13–19 With a free TAP membership, teens can access $5 tickets for select Chicago Symphony Orchestra concerts. Visit cso.org/students for more information.
