2020/21 GROUP SERVICES GUIDE

“ I have been bringing my students to hear the CSO every year for 29 years. The inspiration, motivation and goal setting that follows each of these concerts is priceless. Students understand that what they are hearing and seeing is world-class, yet at the same time they are experiencing real people doing the same thing they are. I grew up three hours away in Wisconsin, and I remember the same feeling when we traveled to hear the CSO. It’s life-changing.” Ray Ostwald, Orchestra Director, York High School, Elmhurst, IL

“ Rogers Travel is thrilled to introduce over 2,000 students a year to the #1 orchestra in the world.” Tammy Rogers, Vice President, Bob Rogers Travel

“ The CSO inspires students and educators alike with its powerful performances. After attending one, it becomes clear to the students that there is a whole new level of artistry they can aspire to.” Brad Pfeil, Orchestra Director, Neuqua Valley High School & Crone Middle School, Naperville, IL

questions? What is the minimum group size? Groups of 10 or more have access to our Group Services team. For groups of 20 or more, exclusive offers are available for most concerts. When is my payment due? After seats have been assigned for your group, we request a 15% nonrefundable deposit. The remaining balance of your order is due 60 days prior to the concert date. Can I change my order? Yes! Group orders can be adjusted until the time of final payment. After paying the deposit, you’ll need to purchase at least 80% of the original ticket quantity. What about handling fees? We waive all per ticket fees for groups (which typically start at $7 per ticket). You’ll only be charged a $15 order fee. How far in advance can I make a request? If you can select a date, we can take a request. Even if the concert season has yet to be announced, we’ll take a request based on the date you’d like to come. Ordering in advance is the key to securing good seats! Will my group be assigned seats when I make a request? For orders made before the season begins, seating will be confirmed in August. Once the season begins, seating requests are processed in the order in which they are received and exact seating can be quoted right over the phone. Can my group sit together? We make every possible effort to seat all group members together, based on availability. Are there any age restrictions for the concerts? Most Symphony Center concerts are recommended for children at least 8 years of age. CSO Family Matinee concerts are designed for children ages 5 and up. Once Upon a Symphony concerts are for children ages 3–5. How do I get my tickets? We can mail your tickets or send them instantly via email. Where is Symphony Center? Symphony Center is located at 220 South Michigan Avenue, across the street from the Art Institute of Chicago. We’re close to incredible hotels, first-rate restaurants and world-famous shopping on the Magnificent Mile. We are happy to provide recommendations. What time should my group arrive? We suggest arriving 30 minutes prior to the start of the concert. Group members should have their tickets in hand. Is there motor coach parking? The closest legal motor coach parking location is at 420 South Franklin Street. Motor coach parking is also available at 1200 South Canal Street, 631 West Kinzie Street and at the Museum Campus. Is photography allowed at Symphony Center? Patrons are welcome to use their smartphones to take photos of their visit to Symphony Center and are encouraged to share them and tag the CSO on social media. However, photography and video recording is prohibited during the performance. 4

anything but ordinary The 2020/21 season not only features beloved masterworks but also new and exceptional events, allowing your group to experience the limitless versatility of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

An American Salute Copland’s Suite from Appalachian Spring, written during World War II, celebrates the rich diversity of American music. The program also features Copland’s Clarinet Concerto, written for Benny Goodman, and a world premiere by Gabriela Lena Frank. Frank’s compositions celebrate her cosmopolitan ancestry—Lithuanian, Peruvian and Chinese—in a mix of styles that is, in her words, “deeply American.” NOV 5–8

Her Story: Celebrating the Centenary of Women’s Right to Vote The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified in August 1920, granting women the right to vote. Her Story, a new commission by Pulitzer Prize winner Julia Wolfe, known for her energetic, vivid and powerful compositions on historical themes, celebrates the centenary of this watershed event. Marin Alsop and the all-female vocal ensemble Lorelei perform this new work, featuring costumes, in a dramatic presentation that honors the landmark achievement of women’s suffrage. FEB 26 & 27

Four Preludes on Playthings of the Wind The Orchestra Hall stage will be transformed into a theatrical space with lighting, costumes and movement for Michael Tilson Thomas’ Four Preludes on Playthings of the Wind, scored for soprano, two backup singers, bar band and chamber orchestra. This song cycle fuses together the poetry of Illinois native Carl Sandburg with multiple musical styles, including jazz, rock and soul, and influences of Gershwin, Bernstein and Stravinsky. DEC 10–12

MusicNOW The Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s internationally recognized and critically acclaimed new-music series is an immersive journey through groundbreaking repertoire. Each program is performed by CSO musicians and guest artists and features a postconcert party with free pizza and beverages. All concerts are performed at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance, 205 East Randolph Street. OCT 12, NOV 16, APR 12, MAY 17

In the Fiddler’s House Beloved violinist Itzhak Perlman joins members of the Brave Old World and Klezmer Conservatory Band to revisit Perlman’s iconic project In the Fiddler’s House, a charming journey through traditional klezmer music, in celebration of its 25th anniversary. “With klezmer, Perlman appears to be perfectly at home... the look of sheer delight that continually illuminates his face underscores the sense of discovery that touches almost every note he plays” (Los Angeles Times).
