MoodSwing, the 1994 album by Joshua Redman’s first permanent quartet, was an astonishing collection by four precociously talented musicians who would rapidly establish themselves as creative beacons. After years of individual triumphs, saxophonist Redman, pianist Brad Mehldau, bassist Christian McBride and drummer Brian Blade join forces again.

Thaddeus Tukes      Quintet Chicago-born NEA Jazz Master Jack DeJohnette has brought out a myriad of melodic colors on the drum set for more than 50 years. His music continues to turn traditions inside out with “spellbinding and haunting results” (Pitchfork) as he performs with his scintillating trio of saxophonist Ravi Coltrane and bassist Matthew Garrison.  Chicago native and Northwestern graduate Thaddeus Tukes is a vibraphonist celebrated for his “fluid technique and pervasive elegance” (Chicago Tribune). His quintet, in its Symphony Center debut, opens the evening. CSO.ORG   5

The B rubeck Brothers Quartet Celebrates Dave Brubeck’s Centennial

with special guests  CATHERINE RUSSELL, JOEY DEFRANCESCO AND CHICO FREEMAN Both veteran jazz performers, Chris and Dan Brubeck come together for a milestone celebration of their father, the legendary pianist Dave Brubeck, whose 1959 Take Five was the first jazz single to sell a million copies. The brothers lead their quartet and special guests in engaging interpretations of Brubeck’s greatest works.

continues to explore genre-defying territory with musical virtuosity. Joining as a special guest is the equally visionary guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, celebrated for his “muscular phrasemaking, virtuosic solo flights and a sophisticated yet accessible sense of harmony” (Chicago Tribune).

 Saxophonist Greg Ward, one of Chicago’s leading jazz voices, and his group Rogue Parade open the program with their signature blend of beat-driven improvisation and rock energy.

Bobby McFerrin Ten-time Grammy winner and 2020 NEA Jazz Master Bobby McFerrin redefined the role of the human voice in his a cappella hit “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” and went on to revolutionize jazz, pop, classical and world music in solo performances and collaborations with everyone from Yo-Yo Ma to the Muppets. Spend a spirited evening with this legendary performer, beloved for his boundless, spontaneous energy.

Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis

Voices of Freedom The legendary Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis returns to its selfproclaimed second home at Symphony Center to perform new arrangements of essential works by some of the most powerful female singers and songwriters of the 20th century. Special guests Melanie Charles, Shenel Johns and Ashley Pezzotti will lend their unique voices to songs written and made famous by Betty Carter, Billie Holiday, Abbey Lincoln and Nina Simone.

Cécile McLorin Salvant has been described as a once-in-a-generation vocalist by Wynton Marsalis, and is hailed for her “perfect intonation, elastic rhythm and an operatic range” (The New Yorker). NEA Jazz Master Maria Schneider creates music that critics have described as “evocative, majestic, magical, heart-stoppingly gorgeous and beyond categorization.” With her 18-member collective, she takes on today’s challenging times through her bold new work, Data Lords, which explores life simultaneously being lived through the computer and in the natural world.

Pianist Danilo Pérez has been lauded for more than 20 years as one of music’s most creative forces, blending the sounds of his native Panama with world influences. Pérez leads his his international ensemble Global Messengers—presenting an uplifting new work, Fronteras (Borders), which explores how an uncertain social landscape causes division—and his Children of the Light trio, featuring the equally talented bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade of the Wayne Shorter Quartet, for an evening of stunning, rhythmically charged performances that brings the 2020/21 Symphony Center Presents Jazz series to a close.
