CHICAGO SY MP HON Y ORC HESTR A AS S OC IATION 20 21/22 ANNUAL RE PORT
DEAR CSOA FRIENDS AND FAMILY, Triumphant returns, poignant moments of reunion and infinite occasions to rejoice in exceptional artistic offerings exemplified the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association’s 2021/22 Season. From the moment our doors opened to full-capacity audiences on Sept. 2 for a special performance by pianist Herbie Hancock, Symphony Center was once again filled with the synergy of thousands of music-lovers reunited with live music. Three weeks later, Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti returned to Chicago for the first time in nearly 19 months. Muti memorably greeted the audience at that first concert on Sept. 23. He recognized the powerful relationship between audiences and the Orchestra and our vital role in sustaining it. “Stay close to the Orchestra,” he said. “Tell your friends, your colleagues, to come to hear the Orchestra, not just to hear the music, but to receive through music beauty, harmony and, as Beethoven said, brotherhood.” The successes of the 2021/22 Season, presented in detail in this report, exhibit the commitment of the CSOA’s many supporters. I would like to first acknowledge the extraordinary musicians of the CSO who, under the artistic leadership of Riccardo Muti, inspired us throughout the season with their artistry. I would like to thank the Trustees for their advocacy and dedication to the present and future success of the organization. The work of the CSOA’s affiliate groups, including the Governing Members, Women’s Board, League, Overture Council, Negaunee Music Institute Board, African American Network and Latino Alliance, reinforced the Board’s efforts. I also thank the many individual donors, foundations, corporations and sponsors for their generosity as well as the many volunteers for their time and commitment. It truly is a great family of supporters that makes the breadth of the CSOA’s programming possible, and it was such a gift to be able to share our collective passion for the organization together in person week after week at Symphony Center once again this past season. As you will read on page 46, we saw exciting progress toward our overall goal for the SEMPRE ALWAYS Campaign for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Created to provide the secure footing needed to promote the CSO’s role as an internationally respected cultural icon and benchmark of what a preeminent orchestra should be, the SEMPRE ALWAYS Campaign received several significant gifts during the 2021/22 Season. I am grateful for the major contributions that were made and for what they symbolize for the overall success of the campaign. Reflecting on my first season as Board Chair, I wish to extend special thanks to CSOA President Jeff Alexander for his leadership and the tireless efforts of the staff. I would also like to acknowledge Board of Trustees Vice Chairs Chester Gougis, Steven Shebik and Helen Zell for their counsel and generous sharing of their talents and experience. In closing, I would like to thank you for once again making live music part of your life. The 2021/22 Season was filled with memorable performances that heightened our senses, lifted our spirits and enriched our lives — all made possible through your unyielding support.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
CHICAGO SY MP HON Y ORC HESTR A AS S OC IATION 20 21/22 ANNUAL RE PORT
DEAR FRIENDS OF THE CSOA, The 2021/22 Season was a homecoming for all members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association family as Symphony Center reopened its doors to capacity audiences and a full slate of concert offerings. Under the artistic leadership of Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti, the Orchestra presented 41 weeks of live performances. With the support of the CSOA — the parent organization of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Chorus, Symphony Center Presents, Negaunee Music Institute and Civic Orchestra of Chicago — over 240 concerts and events were realized, in addition to the continuation of virtually available performances recorded during the pandemic. In September 2021, Riccardo Muti returned to Chicago for the first time in 574 days. Emotion, warmth and energy permeated the first rehearsals and performances, setting the tone for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s 131st season. Over the course of his six residencies in 2021/22 and more than a dozen different programs, Muti and the Orchestra reminded Chicago audiences of the inspiring artistry that epitomizes their partnership. Muti opened the season with Beethoven’s Third Symphony, Eroica, which he dedicated to the heroism of artists everywhere and their perseverance through the pandemic. His first residency also included music by Brahms and Tchaikovsky in addition to works that received their first CSO performances. Muti returned to Chicago in January for three weeks of concerts in Orchestra Hall and two performances in community venues: Chodl Auditorium at Morton East High School in Cicero and Apostolic Church of God in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood. In Muti’s words, these events, like the Concert for Chicago at Millennium Park that concluded the season, were “an invitation for all Chicagoans to share in the joy, power and harmony of music.” Maestro Muti’s third residency included Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 with Mitsuko Uchida and Ninth Symphony — a highlight of the season that brought together the combined forces of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus to share the composer’s poignant message of brotherhood. Muti returned later in March to conduct Mahler’s Rückert-Lieder with mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča and Bruckner’s Symphony No. 2. The former was also a highlight of the April 2 Symphony Ball. In April and May, Muti conducted concerts featuring Principal Bass Alexander Hanna performing Bottesini’s Second Double Bass Concerto, world premieres by past and current Mead Composers-in-Residence and Beethoven’s Fourth and Sixth symphonies. Muti concluded the season with three concert performances of Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera, a tour de force finale of his exploration of Verdi’s operas throughout his tenure as music director. Muti and the CSO focused on championing works by contemporary and lesser-known composers during the 2021/22 Season. These included the two aforementioned world premieres of CSO commissions by former and current Mead Composers-in-Residence, Missy Mazzoli (Orpheus Undone) and Jessie Montgomery (Hymn for Everyone). In February, composer Philip Glass traveled to Chicago to see the Orchestra perform his Eleventh Symphony under Muti’s baton. Also of note were two additional world premieres of CSO commissions: Magnus Lindberg’s Serenades, conducted by Hannu Lintu, and

Gabriela Lena Frank’s Haillí-Serenata, conducted by Andrés Orozco-Estrada. Muti and the CSO also featured compositions by historically underrepresented Black composers such as Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges; Florence Price; and William Grant Still. This season, we were delighted that improved health and safety conditions allowed the Chicago Symphony Chorus on stage once again, singing Handel’s Messiah, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe and Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera. After the final performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, the Association bid a fond farewell to Duain Wolfe, conductor and director of the Chicago Symphony Chorus since 1994. Only the second director since its founding, Wolfe prepared the Chorus for over 150 programs during his 28-year tenure.
“ Thanks to the effort and dedication of the CSOA family through the worst of the pandemic and into the past year, the organization was able to once again carry out its mission ‘to enrich, inspire and transform lives through music, community engagement and education’ through a full season of live concerts and events.”
In 2021/22, the Association welcomed two new affiliated artists to the CSO: Artist-in-Residence Hilary Hahn and Mead Composer-in-Residence Jessie Montgomery. Hahn became the first CSO Artist-in-Residence, and in this role performed on both the CSO and SCP series and participated in multiple programs through the CSO’s Negaunee Music Institute. In her first year as Mead Composer-in-Residence, Jessie Montgomery curated the three concerts on the contemporary CSO MusicNOW series in addition to having her orchestral works performed by both the CSO and Civic Orchestra of Chicago.
The full complement of in-person programs facilitated by the CSO’s Negaunee Music Institute was another welcome return during the 2021/22 Season. This included Civic Orchestra of Chicago concerts, Once Upon a Symphony, Family Matinee and School Concerts, the Crain-Maling Foundation CSO Young Artists Competition, Notes for Peace concerts, lessons and recitals for the Percussion Scholarship Program, the weekend-long Chicago Youth in Music Festival, and the list goes on. As the result of the organization’s commitment to promoting diversity, equity and inclusion, the CSOA established the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Fellowship Program in 2021/22. Developed with support from Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti, the CSO Members’ Committee and Chicago Federation of Musicians, the program is designed to welcome to our stage musicians from populations that have traditionally been underrepresented in American symphony orchestras, including, but not limited to, those who identify as Black, Latino or Indigenous. The program builds upon the CSOA’s longstanding focus on the training and development of musicians that began more than 100 years ago with the establishment of the Civic Orchestra. Other programs of the CSOA or those in which we participate that support those interested in gaining entrance to top conservatories and post-secondary music schools are the Percussion Scholarship Program,

Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative and Sphinx Orchestral Partners Auditions. As a result of last spring’s audition process, we are pleased to have Venezuelan violinist Gabriela Lara with us this season as the first CSO Fellow. The Symphony Center Presents series welcomed enthusiastic audiences to a range of concerts with exceptional soloists and ensembles throughout the 2021/22 Season. After Herbie Hancock’s early September performance that reopened Orchestra Hall to full-capacity audiences, the SCP Jazz series presented eight more concerts, including a celebration of Wynton Marsalis’ 60th birthday, as well as a social equity-themed SCP program titled “Freedom, Justice and Hope,” featuring Bryan Stevenson, both with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Also of note were the debuts of two Chicago artists on the series: saxophonist Greg Ward and vibraphonist Thaddeus Tukes, a graduate of the Percussion Scholarship Program. The SCP series celebrated the centennial of the famed Argentine composer, Astor Piazzolla, with a performance by Quinteto Astor Piazzolla, and welcomed pianist Lang Lang for his first appearance at Symphony Center since 2008. The SCP Chamber Music series featured a sold-out trio recital with violinist Leonidas Kavakos, pianist Emanuel Ax and cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and a concert with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, joined by Mitsuko Uchida. The SCP Piano series included nine recitals by celebrated pianists — from the series debuts of Jan Lisiecki and George Li to the return of veteran performers Evgeny Kissin, Yefim Bronfman and Richard Goode, among others. To return to a full season of concerts was the realization of a long-awaited goal set during the spring of 2020. Thanks to the effort and dedication of the CSOA family through the worst of the pandemic and into the past year, the organization was able to once again carry out its mission “to enrich, inspire and transform lives through music, community engagement and education” through a full season of live concerts and events. The magnificent work of our music director and musicians; the support of our Trustees, Governing Members and volunteer associations; loyal patrons, donors and corporate sponsors, and dedicated staff made the 2021/22 Season both an incredible success and a remarkable achievement.

TREASURER’S REPORT
CH ICAGO SY MP HON Y ORC HESTR A AS S OC IATION 20 21/22 ANNUAL RE PORT
On behalf of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association, I am pleased to report on the financial performance for the year ended June 30, 2022. Following a shortened 2019/20 Season and a 2020/21 Season almost entirely void of in-person concert performances due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were thrilled to return to a full season of concert activity this fiscal year. As a result, operating revenue increased dramatically, from less than $1 million the prior year to $21.3 million in 2022. In addition to strong support from our donors and patrons, the Association was also the recipient of a $10 million federally funded Shuttered Venue Operators Grant. That support was crucial, and along with operating revenues, strong donor support and the regular draw from our endowment, enabled us to fully cover the organization’s operating expenses for the year. The net operating income for the year was $1.7 million. Our financial base also remains strong, with total net assets at June 30 of $330.4 million. We were the recipients of robust and generous giving from donors to our Endowment and Other Investment funds during the year, and we continue to reduce our long-term liabilities by paying down portions of our debt and making contributions to our employee pension plans. The balance of our Endowment, Other Investments and Beneficial Interests in Trusts remains in excess of $400 million. This financial foundation is crucial to supporting one of the world’s premier orchestras, symphonic choirs, training orchestras and all of our presentations and educational programs. As we continue to emerge from the grips of the pandemic and define a “new normal,” we look with gratitude on our donors, patrons and employees who continue to work collectively to ensure that the CSOA is positioned to continue to deliver on its mission. The Board, management, artists and staff of the CSOA look forward to seeing you back at Symphony Center for a thrilling 2022/23 Season of world-class music from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Chorus, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the Symphony Center Presents series and the Negaunee Music Institute.

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
CHICAGO SY MP HON Y ORC HESTR A AS S OC IATION 20 21/22 ANNUAL RE PORT
A long-awaited season On Sept. 2, 2021, Symphony Center welcomed full-capacity audiences for the first time since March 2020, following three weeks of concerts by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in May and June 2021 for limitedcapacity audiences. Legendary pianist and composer Herbie Hancock and his band opened the 2021/22 Season with a Symphony Center Presents Jazz concert that celebrated the 70th anniversary of Hancock’s Orchestra Hall debut. Three weeks later, Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti joined the CSO for their first concerts together since the beginning of the pandemic. Emotion, energy and an eagerness to perform live for Chicago audiences defined this long-awaited reunion in concerts that marked a homecoming for listeners as well.
“The Chicago Symphony is back in full force.” Chicago Sun-Times
“We are here to give you emotions, to give you the sound of beauty, of harmony — that sound that the world is forgetting. ... So, I am so happy to see all of you in this historic hall, in front of an orchestra that is more than 125 years old, that has given beauty and music and enrichment to many generations.” Riccardo Muti’s remarks to the audience, Sept. 23, 2021
“This performance was my first classical music performance in over two years, and it was so uplifting and exciting to experience gorgeous music in a live audience and celebrate incredible music and musicians again. Just what my soul needed.” Elena Martin, CSO patron

Safe and Sound To ensure the health of performing artists and staff, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association formed return-to-work committees comprised of members of the CSO, Chicago Symphony Chorus and administrative staff, who developed protocols in consultation with Dr. Emily Landon from University of Chicago Medicine. These protocols — which were regularly assessed and adjusted in response to the changing conditions of the pandemic — included various combinations of testing and mask requirements for CSO musicians; vaccine mandates for guest artists, substitute and guest musicians, new hires and members of the Chicago Symphony Chorus and Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and remote or hybrid work arrangements, vaccine or testing standards, and mask requirements for administrative staff. Safe and Sound protocols for audience members, first implemented when concerts resumed in May 2021, continued in 2021/22. At various times throughout the season, protocols included vaccination or negative test verification and/or mask requirements for patrons. These efforts were complemented by enhanced cleaning procedures, hand sanitizer stations and a high-quality air ventilation system at Symphony Center. Safe and Sound initiatives proved to be remarkably successful, enabling the CSOA to present a full season of live concerts with very few cancellations or rescheduled performances.

Riccardo Muti & the CSO During his first multi-week residency of the season, Riccardo Muti conducted Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony and works by 18th-century Guadeloupe-born composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges; and 20th-century African American composer Florence Price, whose First Symphony was premiered by the CSO in 1933. The CSO’s first performances of Price’s Third Symphony anchored a spring program that also included music by another groundbreaking African American composer, William Grant Still. Works by contemporary composers featured prominently in Muti’s concerts, including the CSO’s first performances of Philip Glass' Eleventh Symphony. Muti conducted the world premieres of two CSO commissions by former and current Mead Composers-in-Residence: Missy Mazzoli’s Orpheus Undone, a piece inspired by Greek mythology, and Jessie Montgomery’s Hymn for Everyone, a tribute to the composer’s mother and a reflection on the collective challenges of the pandemic. Muti also expanded his legacy of showcasing choral and operatic masterworks with the combined forces of the CSO, Chicago Symphony Chorus and internationally renowned soloists. Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, with its famous “Ode to Joy,” played to sold-out audiences in February, and the season closed with critically acclaimed performances of Un ballo in maschera, the fifth Verdi opera Muti has conducted during his tenure with the CSO.
“This musical thunderclap from the past was a triumph.” Chicago Sun-Times on Price’s Third Symphony
“A superlative Verdian, Muti has cradled the Italian master’s music close to the CSO since assuming his post in 2010. In doing so, he’s single-handedly inaugurated a golden era of opera at Orchestra Hall…” Chicago Tribune

New music
The CSO commissions of Mazzoli’s Orpheus Undone and Montgomery’s Hymn for Everyone and the CSO co-commission of Lindberg’s Serenades were made possible through the Helen Zell Commissioning Program. The CSO commission of Frank’s Haillí-Serenata was made possible through the generous support of the Edward F. Schmidt Family Commissioning Fund.
In addition to works by Glass, Mazzoli and Montgomery, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra performed music by other living composers throughout the season. Guest conductors Hannu Lintu and Andrés OrozcoEstrada led the world premieres of two CSO commissions, respectively: Serenades by renowned Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg and HaillíSerenata by Gabriela Lena Frank, named by the Washington Post as one of the 35 most significant female composers in history. Conductor Klaus Mäkelä opened his critically heralded CSO debut with Eleven Gates, a 2006 work by Anders Hillborg, a Swedish composer whose background in rock music influences his orchestral compositions. Karina Canellakis, also making her CSO debut, conducted Brio by Augusta Read Thomas, the CSO’s composer-in-residence from 1997 to 2006. During his two-week residency, Esa-Pekka Salonen led the CSO’s first performances of three 21st-century compositions: Bryce Dessner’s Violin Concerto, with Pekka Kuusisto as soloist; Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte, and Salonen’s own Gemini. Curated by CSO Mead Composer-in-Residence Jessie Montgomery, the CSO MusicNOW series is dedicated to the discovery and promotion of new works (p. 29). At these intimate concerts, composers introduce their own pieces, providing context to help audiences connect to the music.
Composer anniversaries & special collaborations In 1918, Sergei Prokofiev performed in Orchestra Hall as soloist in the U.S. premiere of his own First Piano Concerto, and he returned in 1921 to give the world premiere of his Third Piano Concerto, conducted by second CSO music director Frederick Stock. The CSO marked the centenary of the latter with performances of both pieces in October 2021: the First Piano Concerto featuring pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk and conductor James Conlon, and the Third Piano Concerto with Denis Matsuev as soloist and Manfred Honeck on the podium.
The Chevalier was generously sponsored by the Zell Family Foundation.
The CSO also celebrated the 100th anniversary of the birth of Astor Piazzolla, the composer who revolutionized the Argentine tango, with November performances of his Aconcagua Concerto for Bandoneón and Orchestra, featuring soloist Daniel Binelli and conductor Giancarlo Guerrero. In addition, Quinteto Astor Piazzolla — the Latin Grammy-winning quartet and standard-bearer for nuevo tango — appeared on the Symphony Center Presents series to mark the occasion. The music of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, took the spotlight in The Chevalier, a concert-theater work written and directed by Bill Barclay and presented by the CSOA in partnership with Music of the Baroque. Conductor Dame Jane Glover, the Music of the Baroque Orchestra, violinist Brendon Elliott and four actors told the remarkable story of the 18th-century Black composer, violinist, fencer and abolitionist.

CSO at the Movies CSO at the Movies, the popular series that pairs film screenings with the CSO’s live performances of their scores, returned to Orchestra Hall with three movies featuring the beloved music of John Williams: Home Alone, Jurassic Park and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. The classic film Casablanca, with its evocative score by Max Steiner, rounded out the series.
The CSO at the Movies series is generously sponsored by Megan and Steve Shebik.
Chicago Symphony Chorus The Chicago Symphony Chorus made a triumphant return with December performances of Handel’s Messiah, conducted by Nicholas McGegan. In addition to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera with Riccardo Muti (p. 19), the Chorus appeared in Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe under the baton of Esa-Pekka Salonen. In February, Duain Wolfe retired after 28 seasons as the Chorus’ director and conductor. Only the second director since its founding in the 1957/58 Season, Wolfe prepared the Chorus for more than 150 programs during his tenure. At the final performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Riccardo Muti and CSOA President Jeff Alexander presented him with the Theodore Thomas Medallion to honor his distinguished service.
The appearances of the Chicago Symphony Chorus were made possible by a generous gift from The Grainger Foundation, with additional support from Jim† and Kay Mabie. Performances of Un ballo in maschera were made possible through the generous support of the Zell Family Foundation and the Patrons Circle (full list on p. 60).
This season, the CSOA celebrated the centennial of Margaret Hillis, the founder and first director of the Chorus. In a new biography, Margaret Hillis: Unsung Pioneer, Cheryl Frazes Hill, the Chorus’ associate director, tells the story of Hillis’ trailblazing work as a conductor, airplane pilot, educator and activist.

In her first season as Mead Composer-in-Residence, Jessie Montgomery curated three eclectic programs of contemporary music for the CSO MusicNOW series. The first concert was performed in Orchestra Hall and the others at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance. “Homecoming” featured the work of composers with Chicago ties, including a CSO MusicNOW commission from Elijah Daniel Smith and works by Ted Hearne, Nathalie Joachim and Montgomery. “Night of Song” offered a celebration of art song today, with a CSO MusicNOW commission from Damien Geter and pieces by Dale Trumbore, Ayanna Woods and Shawn Okpebholo. Finally, “Concerto” showcased works for soloist and ensemble by composers Joan Tower, Alyssa Weinberg, James Moore and Montgomery. On the CSO Classical series, the Orchestra performed two works by Montgomery: Riccardo Muti conducted the world premiere of Hymn for Everyone (p. 19), and Manfred Honeck led the first CSO performances of her 2017 work Coincident Dances. Her music also was performed in CSO for Kids, Civic Orchestra of Chicago and Civic Fellows concerts, and she was the featured guest at a Salon Series event for donors. Montgomery participated in panel discussions preceding the CSO’s performances of Price’s Third Symphony and coached musicians from the Civic Orchestra and Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative, who performed preconcert chamber music throughout Symphony Center.

The entire CSOA family mourned the passing of Maestro Bernard Haitink, regarded as one of the greatest conductors of his era, upon his death on Oct. 21 at the age of 92. He had a long association with the CSO, making his debut in 1976 and returning for engagements in 1997 and early 2006. From the start of the 2006/07 Season through June 2010, Haitink served as the CSO's first-ever principal conductor, a role created to shepherd the Orchestra through the transition from Daniel Barenboim to Riccardo Muti.
Hilary Hahn
artist-in-residence
The inaugural CSO Artist-in-Residence Hilary Hahn began her tenure by performing with the Orchestra and conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada in Dvořák’s Violin Concerto, which was given its U.S. premiere by the CSO in 1891. She also appeared on the Symphony Center Presents Chamber Music series with cellist Seth Parker Woods and pianist Andreas Haefliger, and she was the featured guest at Fall in Love with Music, the annual fundraising event of the League of the CSOA. Hahn played an important role in the educational and community engagement programs of the CSO’s Negaunee Music Institute this season. She coached chamber groups and worked with a student composer at Northside College Preparatory High School and led a master class for three violinists from the Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative. Hahn also collaborated with parents and musicians from Notes for Peace (p. 38), recording and performing two songs of tribute for loved ones lost to gun violence.
His final concerts with the CSO in October 2018, just shy of his 90th birthday, were filled with the wonderful depth and beauty that he so often brought to his performances.
Major support for CSO MusicNOW is generously provided by the Zell Family Foundation, Cindy Sargent†, the Sally Mead Hands Foundation and the Julian Family Foundation.

Symphony Center Presents Several pianists made their Symphony Center Presents (SCP) Piano series debuts this season, including Jan Lisiecki and Denis Kozhukhin, who previously performed as soloists with the CSO, and George Li, the Tchaikovsky Competition’s 2015 silver medalist. The series also featured return appearances by Igor Levit, Richard Goode, Daniil Trifonov, Yuja Wang, Yefim Bronfman and Evgeny Kissin. Yuja Wang joined violinist Leonidas Kavakos for an SCP Chamber Music recital, and the trio of Kavakos, pianist Emanuel Ax and cellist Yo-Yo Ma — who gave a soldout performance in March 2020 — returned with an all-Beethoven program. In addition, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, comprising musicians from more than 20 countries, performed with artistic partner and pianist Mitsuko Uchida in a program of works by Mozart and Purcell. Additional SCP concerts included Quinteto Astor Piazzolla (p. 20), pianist Lang Lang and two perennial favorites: the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Brass and A Chanticleer Christmas. The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra presented an eclectic program of French, Italian and Spanish selections with saxophonist Branford Marsalis, renowned in the spheres of both jazz and classical music. After Herbie Hancock’s season-opening performance (p. 13), the SCP Jazz series continued with eight more concerts by today’s best jazz musicians. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis performed an SCP Jazz concert in celebration of Marsalis’ 60th birthday and another SCP concert titled “Freedom, Justice and Hope” featuring Bryan Stevenson, social justice activist and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative. As part of the ensemble’s residency, trumpeter Marcus Printup led master classes for musicians from DePaul University and the All-City Jazz Ensemble. Grammy Award-winning vocalists Dianne Reeves, Dee Dee Bridgewater with pianist Bill Charlap, and Cécile McLorin Salvant returned to the series, and the all-female sextet of superlative jazz musicians known as Artemis made its Symphony Center debut. Other debuts included two Chicago artists: saxophonist Greg Ward and vibraphonist Thaddeus Tukes, a graduate of the CSO's Percussion Scholarship Program.

CSO in the community In lieu of an international tour, Riccardo Muti and the CSO performed locally for three weeks in January, including free community concerts at Cicero’s Morton East High School and Apostolic Church of God. Audiences across Chicago enjoyed more free music through the CSO All-Access Chamber Music series, featuring performances by ensembles of CSO musicians at Symphony Center and three neighborhood venues: Kehrein Center for the Arts, Beverly Arts Center and South Shore Cultural Center. In addition, the CSO returned to the western suburbs for the CSO at Wheaton series (p. 23) and performed at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Closing the season in June, Muti led the CSO in works by Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky in the 2022 Concert for Chicago — their sixth performance together at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park — with a capacity audience of 12,000 in attendance.
Performances at Morton East High School and Apostolic Church of God were generously sponsored by an anonymous donor and received generous support from the Shebik Community Engagement Program Fund. Civic Orchestra of Chicago The Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the CSO’s prestigious training program for young professional musicians, presented seven full-orchestra concerts, including two at community venues. Led by Principal Conductor Ken-David Masur — the Robert Kohl and Clark Pellett Principal Conductor Chair — and guest conductors, Civic programs featured established masterpieces alongside works from historically marginalized voices. During the annual Bach Marathon, ensembles of Civic musicians performed Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos at elementary schools and retirement communities throughout Chicago, with a finale concert at Fourth Presbyterian Church. In addition to their regular activities with the Civic Orchestra, 13 Civic Fellows participated in educational workshops, partnerships with Chicago Public Schools, Notes for Peace songwriting sessions and independent projects.

Family Matinees & School Concerts The CSO welcomed families back to Orchestra Hall with an October program titled The Promise of a New Day, conducted by Thomas Wilkins. Next, school groups and family audiences enjoyed the beloved Peter and the Wolf, which marked the Symphony Center debut of conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya and the end of a decades-long collaboration with the members of Magic Circle Mime Company before their retirement. Edwin Outwater conducted the long-awaited Chicago premiere of Philharmonia Fantastique: The Making of the Orchestra, a CSO co-commission by former Mead Composer-in-Residence Mason Bates, originally scheduled to celebrate the centennial of the CSO’s concerts for children in 2020. The multimedia project, a collaboration among Bates, Oscar-winning sound designer Gary Rydstrom and animator Jim Capobianco, tells the tale of an animated sprite who takes a journey through the orchestra. Continuing an initiative started in the 2018/19 Season, free tickets and transportation to CSO School Concerts were provided to groups from Chicago Public Schools.
“The music was absolutely amazing and brilliant. And the whole orchestra and the mimes literally brought Peter and the Wolf to life… my kids truly loved it (as did I). It was incredible.” K. Rivera, CSO for Kids patron
Once Upon a Symphony Once Upon a Symphony, the Negaunee Music Institute’s concert series for 3- to 5-year-olds, partnered with Chicago Children’s Theatre to present Maybe Something Beautiful, based on the book by F. Isabel Campoy and Theresa Howell — a story that was featured in a CSO for Kids video during the 2020/21 Season. The concert experience included performances by members of the CSO, vivid animations of Rafael López’s original illustrations and bilingual narration by actor Jasmin Cardenas, who adapted the script. The Once Upon a Symphony season concluded with the ever-popular Jack and the Beanstalk, another production that used interactive storytelling to introduce children to classical music.

Sir Georg Solti Conducting Apprentice of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Colombian American conductor Lina González-Granados began her tenure as the fourth Sir Georg Solti Conducting Apprentice in February 2020 after winning the CSO’s international competition for the role. Following the pandemic hiatus, she resumed her role in the 2021/22 Season, attending CSO rehearsals and performances during each of Muti’s Chicago residencies. In April and June, González-Granados stepped in to conduct the CSO in two weeks of concerts when illness prevented Muti from appearing on the podium. Other duties included conducting the Civic Orchestra’s concert at Kenwood Academy High School and leading rehearsals and a performance by the 2022 Chicago Youth in Music Festival Orchestra.
Crain-Maling Foundation CSO Young Artists Competition On March 19, 15-year-old pianist Noah Kim was named the winner of the 2022 Crain-Maling Foundation CSO Young Artists Competition, presented by the League of the CSOA and the Negaunee Music Institute. All four finalists performed one movement of a piano concerto in Orchestra Hall, accompanied by the Civic Orchestra of Chicago with conductor Andrew Grams. Following his winning performance of the first movement of SaintSaëns’ Piano Concerto No. 2, Kim will appear as a soloist in a CSO for Kids concert during the 2022/23 Season.
Chicago Youth in Music Festival Founded in 2009, the Chicago Youth in Music Festival was reimagined in 2022 as a nationwide partnership with “pathways” programs, which offer intensive training and other resources to support talented young musicians from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in American orchestras. The 2022 Chicago Youth in Music Festival and National Pathways Summit, presented in partnership with the Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative and National Instrumentalist Mentoring and Advancement Network, brought together more than 100 students and institutional leaders from across the country for three days of musical learning, strategic conversations and collaboration. After a series of rehearsals with Lina González-Granados, the weekend culminated with 50 student musicians from 10 U.S. cities playing side by side with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Civic Orchestra of Chicago and Chicago Sinfonietta in an open rehearsal led by Riccardo Muti.

Notes for Peace Civic Fellows, members of the Irene Taylor Trust (ITT) and families from the support and advocacy group Purpose Over Pain came together for two concerts featuring songs written through Notes for Peace, an initiative that empowers parents who have lost children to gun violence to create original songs of tribute. In March, the first Notes for Peace concert at Symphony Center featured never-performed songs written throughout the pandemic. Then, members of ITT and Civic Fellows worked with new Purpose Over Pain families to produce new songs, all of which were performed at a poignant concert in April at Austin Town Hall. Explore the project and songs at notesforpeace.org.
Percussion Scholarship Program Founded in 1995, the Percussion Scholarship Program (PSP) offers intensive, weekly percussion instruction on full scholarship to Chicago youth in grades 3-12. Led by CSO Percussion Patricia Dash and Lyric Opera Orchestra Assistant Principal Percussion Douglas Waddell, the PSP provides instruments, lesson materials and weekly instruction to highly motivated young musicians. During the 2021/22 Season, students participated in two lessons per week, one on snare drum and the other on marimba, and performed in two recitals at Symphony Center as well as the Negaunee Music Institute Showcase in June.
Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative The Negaunee Music Institute is a co-founding organization and lead partner of the Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative (CMPI), which works to increase diversity within America’s professional musical landscape by supporting talented young musicians from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds. CSO and Civic Orchestra musicians provide guidance and musical instruction to CMPI Fellows, prepare seniors for college auditions and invite CMPI Fellows to attend select Civic workshops and rehearsals. This season, CMPI Fellows participated in the Chicago Youth in Music Festival (p. 37), master classes with CSO Artist-in-Residence Hilary Hahn, the Negaunee Music Institute Showcase and more.
School partnerships
CSO-Connect is generously sponsored by Polk Bros. Foundation and Lloyd A. Fry Foundation.
The Negaunee Music Institute continued to work closely with public, private and parochial schools to provide access to the extraordinary musical resources of the CSO for students in Chicago and beyond. Instrumental partners from Chicago Public Schools (CPS) hosted at least one performance by a chamber ensemble of CSO musicians and received an invitation to attend a CSO Open Rehearsal, with free transportation provided. Civic musicians worked with students at partner schools throughout the season, and CSO Artist-in-Residence Hilary Hahn visited Northside College Preparatory High School. Serving ten schools in 2021/22, the CSO-Connect arts integration program brought 40 CPS teachers together to develop curricular units tied to a yearly theme and orchestral repertoire featured in a CSO for Kids concert.

SEMPRE ALWAYS is a $175 million fundraising effort to provide the secure footing needed to promote the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s preeminent role as a cultural icon showcasing musical brilliance, leadership and innovation. With an inaugural commitment and challenge from Helen and Sam Zell, leading members of the CSOA family have made substantial gifts that will allow the CSOA to begin achieving goals of a long-term strategic plan that focus on enhancing the Orchestra’s world-class status, while boldly and openly addressing systemic fiscal challenges.
Bequests A vital element of the SEMPRE ALWAYS campaign is planned giving, particularly bequests made through an estate will or trust. Other legacy vehicles include a beneficiary designation from a retirement plan, donor advised fund or life insurance policy, and arrangements established through an annuity. All these advance planning tools help ensure that the CSOA can continue to share the transformative power of music with future generations.
